PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY AND SAFETY There is much to be excited about in the work of the school this year and the support of students, parents, other partners and our dynamic and commi9ed teaching staff.

!

It is all built on high quality rela?onships where everyone takes personal responsibility for their own behaviour. The school has very strong a n d c o n s i s t e n t p l a Ao r m s fo r behaviour, making choices and "staying above the line". We value kindness. We value safety -­‐ in person and in cyber space. We value working together to solve problems.

!

Our students have their greatest success when parents and the community work closely with the school and when there is trust established. This has been a strength of the school for over 15 years.

!

I would just like to remind parents that we always try to help and always try to answer ques?ons and concerns.

!

This is much easier to do when parents treat our staff with kindness and respect. Sadly, this year I have had to ask two parents to only contact the school via the principal because those parents

behaved in an abusive or threatening manner.

!

Although there have been only two instances they can be very frightening for staff and students and we need our parents to be role models (with us) of the kinds of behaviour used by successful adults. Helping parents to work with the school to support their children is a shared journey that starts at enrolment and finishes (for most parents) when their children graduate as young adults in Year 12.

!

This term, I want to thank that special group of parents who are suppor?ng us to work with their sons and d a u g hte rs w h o h ave co m p l ex p e rs o n a l , s o c i a l a n d l e a r n i n g circumstances. I am impressed by the quality of support those parents and carers give the school in making sure their children experience success.

!

EXCELLENCE AND SUCCESS At the start of this year I announced that we would focus 2014 on the PERSIST value of Excellence which we define as doing a personal best.

!

In this Missing Link the efforts of students to achieve personal bests shine out of the pages -­‐ in academic studies, the arts, school service and sport. It has been a year when we have been able to “feel” the tone of

(con8nued) of the school liZing and all our data con?nues to show evidence of improvement.

!

We have had a lot of visitors in the school this year and they have commented on how impressive our students are. They some?mes seem surprised -­‐ almost as if they don't expect students from a public high school in western Sydney to be so successful.

!

Most of the ?me I find their s u r p r i s e a m u s i n g a n d j u st occasionally I am disappointed that our community con?nues to be portrayed unfairly. In my opinion this school has done much to change a\tudes in the wider Australian community because of the work we are doing in curriculum, in literacy, in p e r s o n a l i s e d l e a r n i n g a n d l e a d e r s h i p i n p r o fe s s i o n a l learning.

INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY As I have said before, this school has become among the best known schools in the country for the work we are doing.

!

Success is not an accident. I like to use the following formula: Innova?on (crea?vity) + effort (persistence) = change.

We are being recognised for our innova?ve work and we are thinking crea?vely as we design our new school plan. There will be more informa?on on the plan coming out next term and we think we have iden?fied the three strategic direc?ons that will be our focus for 2015 -­‐ 17: + Capability driven curriculum + Personalised Learning + Innova?ve Prac?ce

We plan to build on the work we have already done to deliver our overall purpose of increasing the ex p e c ta? o n s , ca p a c i t y a n d achievement of the school community. We are ready to make

some important changes to the ways we work and learn.

LEADERSHIP AND TEAM WORK This year I have seen lots of evidence of successful change and I want to thank a group of leaders who understand how to create change and are making change happen: * Kate Short and the Na?onal Partnership team who have created a high quality approach to teaching and learning in reading and now are working to do the same in wri?ng. The shiZ in student effort and achievement is no?ceable. * Year 8 who started high school with many challenges and who are now models of resilient learning -­‐ their individual and team efforts to improve and their determina?on to succeed has been no?ceable. We have much to learn from them. * The Professional Prac?ce Mentors who are quietly leading a "revolu?on" in the way the teachers put professional learning into their daily prac?ce. In October Peter Langfield and I have been invited to present at a na?onal conference on the school's work in classroom observa?on. We have been fortunate to be doing this work in p a r t n e r s h i p w i t h D r. To ny Loughland from Sydney University and to have Masters degree students from the university working in the school. * Kylie Munzenberger, Sarah Andrews and the year advisers who have redesigned the way they work with students in universal, targeted and individual programs. Recently the execu?ve h a s h a d p r e s e n t a ? o n s o n "everything we know about Year 9 and Year 11". Next term we will focus on Year 10 and Year 8. The results of their work can be seen in the growing engagement, confidence and well being of each year group.

* Our Science faculty, led by Aaron Prestridge, who have pioneered project based learning in Science and using it to develop higher order skills in students. * Conny Ma\more who is leading a major change project sponsored

by Social Ventures Australia (see below). Conny's energy for this work and her capacity to deliver new approaches to personalised l e a r n i n g i s a l r e a d y b e i n g recognised in and outside the school community. * Our current School Captains -­‐ Breayla Harding and Tyrrell M c C a r t h y -­‐ w h o s e m a t u r e , d e d i c a t e d a n d a r ? c u l a t e leadership of the school has been noted throughout the year. Their leadership is at the heart of how students see themselves in this school. * Peter Langfield, Noelene Callaghan, Sarah Andrews, Frank Movia, Dilesh Kumar and Aun Burki who have designed the school's BYOD program for 2015.

When parents came to the enrolment night for Year 7 for 2015 there was real excitement about the new ways we will be learning and, before the end of Term 3 all students will have informa?on on the program and will be invited to "opt in". * And last, but certainly not least C h e r y l H a r v e y a n d o u r administra?ve staff who, working w i t h o u r H e a d T e a c h e r Administra?on Kaliopi Loucos, have quietly introduced the LMBR (learning management business review) soZware and systems into the school. As principal I have been shocked at the poor design of this soZware but remain op?mis?c that if it can work, our team will make it work well for our school.

P A R T I C I P A T I O N A N D ENTHUSIASM I also need to make some thanks to: * Year 12 teachers and Year 12 students for their dedica?on and

The gradua?ng class of 2014 is our largest to go through the school and they will leave a considerable legacy. * Our curriculum Head Teachers who are leading major work in new programming, assessment a n d " c a p a b i l i t y " d r i v e n curriculum. * Our sports coaches and the parents who support our massive sport program. In par?cular I wish to congratulate Joel Treharne, our volleyball coach and the two v o l l e y b a l l t e a m s o n t h e i r outstanding wins at CHS this year (see below). * Our deba?ng coach Brianna Dolling whose teams are working hard to succeed. * Our Robo?cs team and their coach Linda Graham. * Our Year 7 students who have just completed the We are Readers program and whose results show a "big jump" from NAPLAN to now. * John Meng and the LOTE team for a wonderful launch of the Confucius Classroom and the celebra?on of Chinese culture in our school. * Our lead facul?es who have trialled new teaching and learning tools and then shared them with others. I wish to say a par?cular thanks to the Visual Arts teachers for their work in developing higher order thinking and graphic organising ac?vi?es. * Our P&C for their enthusias?c support of BYOD and the dona?on of two sample BYOD computers as prizes for Year 6 parents who came to the enrolment night. * Our partners who support the s c h o o l fi n a n c i a l l y a n d strategically including the L e a r n i n g N e i g h b o u r h o o d s c h o o l s , S o c i a l Ve n t u r e s A u s t r a l i a , H a n b a n , t h e A u s t r a l i a n i n d i g e n o u s Mentoring Experience and AFL Indigenous Academies. Personalised Digital PorAolio 4 . 2 I C Pa re n t E n ga g e m e n t Modules Our partnership with Social Ventures Australia (SVA) con?nues to grow. The project leadership team travelled to Melbourne to p a r ? c i p a t e i n a T h o u g h t L e a d e rs h i p G at h e r i n g . T h i s brought together all of the Bright Spot Schools involved in the p r o j e c t a n d p r o v i d e d a n opportunity for us to reflect on our exis?ng partnerships and u n d e r s t a n d t h e r o l e o f philanthropy in schools. It also allowed us to share the great w o r k b e i n g u n d e r ta ke n t o improve outcomes for students.

All 4 of our major projects are beginning to take shape. This term we have focused on the Work Ready, Uni Ready project with new systems in place for subject selec?ons to provide students with a comprehensive overview of each subject, enabling them to make an informed choice which fits in with their career plan. We are also conduc?ng audits of the careers program and the VET program to ensure we are delivering work readiness skills to students.

The Personalised Digital PorAolio Project is well under way as we con?nue to research and review exis?ng porAolios and design a Rooty Hill High School capabili?es porAolio. The porAolios will showcase the work of students and provide an opportunity for them to demonstrate their achievement of the ACARA General Capabili?es in literacy, n u m e ra c y, i nfo r m a? o n a n d communica?ons, technology, cri?cal and crea?ve thinking, personal and social capability, e t h i c a l u n d e r s t a n d i n g a n d intercultural understanding.

The 21C Parent Engagement Module Project is inves?ga?ng innova?ve ways of engaging more parents in the life of the school and providing useful tools and resources to support their children through high school.

We look forward to strengthening our partnership with SVA as we move in to the second phase of each project.

JUNIOR SCHOOL

LEAPS The LEAPS program for Year 9 con?nued in Term 3. The 20 students involved have been forging even more benefits from their mentoring sessions. The topics for the mentoring sessions have focused on goal se\ng and diligence enabling students to set personal and academic goals with their mentors.

Turia Pi] Ye a r 9 s t u d e n t s h a d t h e opportunity to experience a mo?va?onal talk by Turia Pi9.

Students and teachers alike were completely enthralled by her story and the lessons of resilience and persistence she shared.

Turia PiF. It’s the name that was on everyone’s lips even before she stepped foot into Rooty Hill High School. ANer her visit, I was leN astounded at how resilient she really was. Turia influenced me in a way that altered my perspecPve on how to cope with tough situaPons. Being a teenager is a Pme when most students are busy either fi?ng in or standing out.

Our experiences now, determine the type of people we want to be for the rest of our life. Turia’s visit to this personally inspired me to be a stronger person and to appreciate all the things I would normally take for granted. Turia taught me that the definiPon of beauPful is not created through the beliefs of society, but rather one you create yourself. Turia taught me all of this, and to me,

she is the definiPon of resilience.

She will forever be one of the people who have helped shape who I want to be for the rest of life.

Rachelle Ra8vo Year 10 IN LEAGUE IN HARMONY A six week program "In League In Harmony" was run for NRL and other spor?ng fans. The program involves external NRL trainers visi?ng the school and educa?ng a small group of students on diversity and tolerance in a classroom se\ng as well as football and teamwork skills outside on the oval.

Tell Them From Me Survey All students in the junior school have been analysing the data from the Tell Them from Me Survey and comple?ng reflec?ons on the programs they have been offered as well as their commitment to upholding the Rooty Hill High School PERSIST values. More news on this next term.

reading comprehension strategy ac?vi?es that were focused around the novel Wonder by R.J Palacio. As a year group, the confidence and a\tude towards reading has increased. It is this focus and determina?on that has enabled Year 7 to have such a successful start to high school. The school was very pleased that when the last test was done in August there had been a big jump from NAPLAN in May. NAPLAN r e s u l t s w e n t h o m e o n 1 0 September. The TORCH results (August) are available from the school.

BEING UNIQUE Y e a r 8 a n d 9 s t u d e n t s p a r t i c i p ate d i n a n a l l d ay workshop titled Being Unique.

This all day event is a series of s e l f-­‐ e ste e m wo r ks h o ps . A l l students were be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities that promote self-­‐esteem, resiliency and team work. The workshops included hip hop dancing, song writing/ recording session, boxing/fitness, and team building games.

Onwards & Upwards Year 7 par?cipated in the Onwards and Upwards program this term.

S t u d e n t s w e r e g i v e n t h e opportunity to think about higher educa?on and what career they may like to pursue in the future.

Literacy Year 7 students were chosen to pilot a targeted intensive literacy program We Are Readers. For 4 weeks, students completed

Revolu8on red campaign All junior students were involved i n r a i s i n g a w a r e n e s s a n d fundraising for the RevoluPon Red Campaign -­‐ The Roar Effect. The Revolu?on Red Campaign aims to ‘paint our communi?es red’ with a message of HOPE, to raise awareness and vital funds for Kids Helpline. Well done to all students involved!

SENIOR SCHOOL

Year 10 Year 10 have been motoring through the term working hard a n d p r e p a r i n g f o r t h e i r examina?on week. With the Senior Study, Homework Centre a n d S e n i o r S t u d y S e s s i o n s increasing in numbers it is excellent to see the ex tra effort year 10 are pu\ng in for a piece of success.

Study Skills Workshop All Year 11 students were involved in a Study Skills Workshop earlier this term. Students were given helpful hints on preparing study areas, organising study notes and implemen?ng strategies to aid in revising content. Year 11 students have received copies of study booklets, which further explain these concepts.

Senior Leadership Elec8ons A huge congratula?ons to all Year 11 students who took part in the Senior Leadership program earlier this term. Changes to the Senior Leadership elec?on process saw students a9end an informa?on session, par?cipate in SLEP training, a9end a panel interview and give a speech to over 400 students and staff.

On September 19 we farewell Year 12 at their Gradua?on Ceremony.

Year 12 then complete their H i g h e r S c h o o l C e r ? fi c a t e Examina?ons star?ng October 13.

They finish up on November 19 at their Year 12 Formal held at the Novotel Sydney, Norwest.

LEARNING SUPPORT Power in the Palms of Parents A chilly Rooty Hill evening marked the warmest of occasions on the evening of the 12th August 2014, where the second PACTS (Parents As Career Transi?on Support) took place in the library. Following a successful workshop last term, Mrs. Camillos (Careers Adviser) and Mrs. Marchich (Senior Support) treated the parents to another produc?ve workshop about how parents can encourage their children to follow their passions and pursue their dreams.

In a dynamic world, students are r e g u l a r l y b o m b a r d e d w i t h informa?on regarding their future op?ons and oZen turn to their parents for advice. With this in mind, the choices made within a family carry the capacity to echo fo r ge n e ra? o n s , a n d m o re importantly, ensure students choose the career path that best fulfils their passion, best fulfils their ambi?on and fulfils their adult responsibili?es.

T a c k l i n g p r o c r a s ? n a ? o n , encouraging posi?ve life skills and i n f o r m i n g c h i l d r e n o f t h e opportuni?es available to them are just few of the many topics c o v e r e d i n t h e o n g o i n g workshops, with Mrs. Camillos stressing “We can’t bully these children into doing what we want them to do; they need to be encouraged to make the right choices themselves. We, as adults, are obliged to inform them as best we can.” Helping students move towards independence and responsibility is a task shared by the workshop’s co-­‐presenter, Mrs. Marchich, who regularly deals

with senior students struggling to make important life choices such as whether or not to remain enrolled at school, or move on into the next chapter of their lives.

Parents are encouraged to contact the school if they wish to be involved in future workshops.

With the con?nued assistance of staff and parents at Rooty Hill, we plan to con?nue to transi?on students from school to success.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL

The Children’s Book Council Book of The Year Each year the Children’s Book Council shortlists books in 5 categories and announces the winners in August. Any books shortlisted by the CBCA (as well as the winners) are worth a look if you are interested in children's literature.

During term 3 the SRC team has been busy raising awareness and fundraising for the 40 Hour Famine.

AZer six SRC students a9ended the Global Leaders Conven?on earlier this year, the SRC learnt about the key issues contribu?ng to global hunger and were inspired to contribute to the 40 Hour Famine event. Bringing the inspira?on back to Rooty Hill involved organising a successful muZi day for the whole school with a gold coin dona?on from every par?cipa?ng student.

For parents and carers the list provides a good star?ng point when you are unsure of a good reading sugges?on. The winners were: Older Readers: Wildlife by Fiona Wood and Younger Readers: City of Orphans by Catherine Jinks

Each year the NSW Premier issues a challenge to students in Years 7-­‐9: Are you able to read 20 books over the course of the year star?ng now and going un?l September, 2015? Whilst this can ini?ally seem daun?ng I have found our students are quite resilient and can easily manage provided they start now.

The SRC encouraged more than 40 students to sign up for the 40 Hour Famine event and give up food or something meaningful to them for 40 hours. Well done to the students who par?cipated and contributed to the 40 Hour Famine in their own way. A huge men?on to the SRC students who successfully raised more than $2,600 for this worthwhile event.

A great achievement!

COMPUTING/ TECHNOLOGY

2014 Robocup Soccer Challenge On the 28 and 29 of August, a group of Year 7 and Year 8 students represented Rooty Hill High School at the State Junior Robocup Soccer Challenge.

The compe??on was held at University of New South Wales and a9racted students from all sectors and different types of schools.

Francesco Demasi, Lara Ferri, Helen Liang and Kiarna Terry (Team Banana) worked alongside Andrew Lim, Lucas Shipley, Andrew Vu and Liam Walker (Team Revolu?on) over the past year to build and construct Lego robots capable of compe?ng in a game of soccer against other teams. Students were required to p l a n , d e s i g n a n d t e s t t h e construc?on and programming of their robots in order to complete the round robin and elimina?on challenges carried out over the two days.

All students rose to the many challenges they encountered over

the two days, demonstra?ng outstanding problem solving and team work skills. Both teams finished in the middle of the compe??on.

T h i s i s a n o u t s t a n d i n g achievement for both teams given that they compete against older and more experienced teams from other schools. All students are to be congratulated for their hard work over the year.

T h i s n a? o n a l p ro g ra m m i n g compe??on aims to challenge students and test problem solving skills, understanding of logic along and the ability to solve problems using programming language. The skills required to complete these p ro g ra m m i n g c h a l l e n ge s i s significantly high and our students have demonstrated all of the PERSIST values in order to work their way through the extremely difficult problems.

NCSS Programming Challenge Francesco Demasi, Andrew Lim, Imico Pablico and Ky Staal, all from Year 8, have spent Term 3 developing programming skills and have been using their skills to write computer codes using Python programming language.

They have also tested their p r o g r a m m i n g s k i l l s a n d knowledge by compe?ng in The University of Sydney, Na?onal Computer Science School (NCSS) Programming Challenge.

Open Night Parents, teachers, students and local community members were treated to a showcase of Year 12 crea?ve and performing arts works on Thursday, 28 August.

‘High School Not so Musical’ opened the second half and was a humorous take on stereotypes and leaving school. The final Drama item was the hilarious ‘Tough T*\es’ which shed light on c u r re nt A u st ra l i a n p o l i ? ca l personali?es.

The outstanding Visual Arts HSC works were on display in the Professional Learning Centre and featured a rich variety of artworks ranging from realist drawing: ‘Pamilya’ by Chino Lazaro and ‘Jasmine’ by Brooke Coppin; collage: ‘Detritus’ by Joshua Goss and ‘Rhythm of the Heart’ by Ashley Plain; photography: ‘What’s in Fashion’ by Ashlea Ross, ‘Dysphoria’ by Yrhen Bascara; pain?ng: ‘Free soul’ by Kyle Wilson, ‘ICHOR’ by Donabelle De Los Santos, ‘Formica?on’ by Kayla Heaney; through to intricate cultural sculpture: ‘Immigra?on f r o m t h e P a s t ’ b y S t e l l a Motuapuaka.

An exci?ng inclusion in this year’s concert was the HSC Drama group performances and the concert opened with the first of these: ‘Decisions’-­‐ a serious work reflec?ng on the consequences of

Setaleki Mafi led the band for the final two numbers: ‘Master B l a s t e r ’ a n d t h e j o y o u s ‘September ’ which had the audience dancing in the isles.

The large audience of family members and friends showed their apprecia?on for the hard work and crea?vity demonstrated in all the student performances.

DRAMA

The English faculty has been working with Year 7 classes on a study of cultural myths and legends; reading stories from Aboriginal cultures, Asia and the south Pacific. Students are in the process of wri?ng their own myths, which will be intriguing to read.

Break a leg! That’s what every director tells their cast before they go on stage, but they don’t expect them to take it literally. It seems like the characters in this year’s musical didn’t get the memo.

Year 8 started the term looking closely at a novel, but having wri9en an essay [for many it was their first] about their reading, they have now moved on to an examina?on of appropria?on -­‐ where composers take an exis?ng text and use it to communicate a new message for a new audience by changing it. Some exci?ng scripts are expected from this work.

Year 9 have recently completed an examina?on of the very popular idea of dystopic worlds. They have read, discussed and wri9en about dystopian futures, so we look forward to reading their stories.

Year 10 are busily preparing for their exams, where we are asking them to write a story and an essay in two hours -­‐ some of them will find this challenging, but it is all about preparing them for Years 11 and 12.

Year 11 are working through their exams at this ?me, but we an?cipate great things from them in 2015.

Meanwhile, we are “gearing up” for Year 12 gradua?on, with lots of revision happening in class. We certainly wish all students well, in the countdown to their HSC. It has been a pleasure working with them.

The Year 7 & 8 teams matched up against Colo, with our A team gaining a solid win and the B team just missing out. We wish them luck as they complete their final zone debates towards the end of Term 3.

The school was very excited by the performance this year of A h m a d A l d a h e s h , K e a n n a B a l d w i n -­‐ H a r t m a n n , D a n i e l Edmonds and Rachelle Ra8vo (the Year 10 team) who have performed be9er than any previous teams from RHHS in the Premier's Deba?ng Challenge.

They were undefeated in their zone, took out Girraween in the Interzone and Blacktown Boys in the Quarter finals. Unfortunately, in a very close debate, they were knocked out in the Semi-­‐Finals by Penrith. However, they are already discussing tac?cs and training for next year!

Broken is the ?tle of this year’s musical, and as the ?tle suggests, it deals with all things broken. We are taken on a journey into the life of a football player whose broken leg is a catalyst for change; change that not only impacts him, but those around him. The beauty in this musical is the op?mism it reinforces, reminding us that all things broken have the poten?al to mend.

The 2014 school musical is an original piece composed by students and staff at Rooty Hill High School. With singing, dancing and slaps?ck comedy, the musical is sure to wow every crowd.

The produc?on will hit the stage in Term 4, Week 10. Tickets will go on sale at the beginning of next term.

NAIDOC 2014 NAIDOC Week was celebrated in Week 1 of this term with facul?es p ro m o ? n g t h e m e a n i n g o f N A I D O C a n d o u r o ffi c i a l assemblies were held on Friday 18 July. The theme was around Serving Country -­‐Centenary and B e y o n d t o h o n o u r t h e achievements of Aboriginal men a n d w o m e n w h o h a v e contributed to Australia's war ?me History.

We were thrilled to welcome Uncle Wes Marne -­‐ a Biduginbul Elder who has a long history of working with the school and the D a r u g C o m m u n i t y . This was a student led project to raise awareness of what 'NAIDOC' means to students to promote r e c o n c i l i a ? o n . T h e m e d i a produc?on was facili?ed by Mrs Angie Reyes and Digital Media students: Ryan Revilla and Tristan Filio.

Our partners in Aboriginal Educa?on, The AFL Indigenous Academy and the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience supported us. The Academy students also made a video for Reconcilia?on that was featured at the assembly. Year 10 Vietnam Veterans Visit Over the last decade, Rooty Hill High School has been privileged to hear Vin and Nancy Cosgrove address Year 10 about their experiences as Vietnam War Veterans. This year, students were again cap?vated by Vin’s first-­‐hand accounts of life as a soldier-­‐ the horrors, the mateship and the las?ng impact of his military service. Nancy also shared her perspec?ve of the Vietnam War and provided students with the opportunity to wear military regalia.

With hands-­‐on experience of a variety of historical artefacts, students were able to empathise with the reality, and tragedy, of war. Year 10 were an a9en?ve a u d i e n c e a n d a r e t o b e congratulated on the welcome they gave both Vin and Nancy.

Australian Mathema8cs Compe88on T h i s y e a r ’ s A u s t r a l i a n MathemaPcs CompePPon (AMC) was held on 7th August. During the compe??on, 43 Rooty Hill High School students a9empted a collec?on of pure maths and prac?cal problems. The maths f a c u l t y a p p r e c i a t e s t h e i r par?cipa?on and effort, and looks forward to seeing excellent compe??on results, which will be released in September 2014.

Maths in Surveying 13 Year 10 students had a Trig-­‐in-­‐ acPon day at Bicentennial Park on August 15. They took part in an e xc u rs i o n c a l l e d M a t h s i n Surveying, ge\ng a deep insight into how Trigonometry is applied in real life applica?ons such as land surveying. Students had an o p p o r t u n i t y t o w o r k w i t h experienced land surveyors, using t r i p o d s , r a n g e fi n d e r s a n d theodolites to accurately measure the size of land.

Design a Theme Park In Term 3 all Year 7 students were given a task to design a theme park of their own. Under the teachers’ guidance, students were required to carefully plan for the park, from high-­‐tech thrill rides to oasis of relaxa?on and apply their mathema?cal knowledge and skills when designing. Students presented their “mul?-­‐million dollar design” to their teachers and classmates in Week 9. How exci?ng!

Chromebook Enhanced Maths Learning Students have really enjoyed having Chromebooks in the Mathema?cs classrooms as one of their learning tools this term.

Included in many inves?ga?ve tasks, Chromebooks helped inspire student curiosity, increase learning mo?va?on and boost produc?vity. The maths faculty will be maintaining a class set of 30 Chromebooks in Term 4 for students to access maths learning apps, maths games and web base class work/homework system, Mymathonline.

Special Men8on The Mathema?cs faculty is so p r o u d o f J a s o n M a w h o has achieved a grade of High Dis?nc?on in the 2014 Australia Mathema?cs Compe??on. This has placed Jason in the top 2% of all the Year 9 and Year 10 par?cipants from NSW schools.

Students were lucky enough to have the opportunity to have the Sydney Chinese Dance Company come and celebrate this day with us. Students had a fantas?c day filled with excitement as they watched performances such as the Chinese Lion Dance and a Chinese fashion show. This day offered a fantas?c opportunity for students to learn more about C h i n e s e a r t s a n d c u l t u r e .

SALSA Students As LifeStyle Ac5vists (SALSA) is a student run program where Year 10 students deliver Health lessons to Year 8 students.

This program has run at Rooty Hill High School for the past 9 years and we have seen sta?s?cal evidence jus?fying the success of the program.

Pandas will enter the Gala Day as the top seeds where each team will play for the opportunity to take home the coveted ?tle of SEPEP champions.

All PDHPE teachers look forward to seeing the improvements in fitness level and engagement level as a result of implemen?ng the AMPED strategies. Students will wear the accelerometers for another week during term 4.

SALSA ran successfully again this year at RHHS as a result of the outstanding Year 10 leaders. Their e n t h u s i a s ? c a p p r o a c h a n d willingness to display ini?a?ve ensured the year 8 students learnt in a fun, engaging environment.

These Year 10 leaders will also have the opportunity to liaise with the school canteen to implement Healthy Ea?ng strategies.

SEPEP The Rooty Hill High School Sport Educa5on in Physical Educa5on Program (SEPEP) is a soZball compe??on run by students for students, highligh?ng leadership, teamwork and responsibility.

Students have been placed into teams, assigned a coach and captain and developed a war cry.

The teamwork that has developed over the term has been fantas?c, resul?ng in a large increase in the students’ skills and game sense.

This year 8 group has ensured that this year has been one of the m o s t s u c c e s s f u l S E P E P compe??ons run. The Penguins, Suns, Panthers, Rhinos and

test, year 8 students recorded a reading of Moderate to Vigorous Physical Ac?vity (MVPA) that was on average 30% higher than the pre-­‐test.

Premiers Spor8ng Challenge Year 8 students par?cipated in the Premier Spor?ng Challenge, recording their physical ac?vity over 10 weeks. The aim of the challenge is to analyse and improve the amount of planned and incidental physical ac?vity we par?cipate in. Students were encouraging each other to beat their previous weeks and also helping each other become more ac?ve in PE lessons and in the playground to increase their physical ac?vity.

Overall it has been a successful program and one most students have definitely benefited from.

AMPED A l l P D H P E t e a c h e r s h a v e par?cipated in professional development aimed at increasing Adolescent Physical Ac?vity. The primary goal of the program is to encourage students to develop the willingness and ability to be more physically ac?ve outside of school.

All Year 8 students wore an accelerometer for a week during term 1 to get base line data for the survey. During a recent post-­‐

Turia Pi] As part of Year 9 and Year 10’s studies Turia Pi9 was asked to speak to the year groups. Turia Pi9 suffered burns to over 90% of her body whilst running an ultra-­‐ marathon in Western Australia.

Her story of resiliency, inner strength and personal triumph was awe inspiring for everybody in a9endance. She spoke of the importance of dreaming, goal se\ng and never giving up and how the students could apply her messages to their everyday lives.

It truly was a great privilege to a9end.

This term Years 7 and 9 were extremely busy working on their projects for Science, both of which involved the construc?on of a model.

Year 7 researched, designed and constructed solar ovens that could be used to decontaminate dirty water in order to make it safe to drink. It was great fun and top ?er learning when year 7 took over the oval for their project base learning day.

Science and Maths Day A group of 37 students from Year

Physics Fun Day Year 11 Physics students a9ended a Physics is Fun day at Luna Park this term where they were able to consolidate their understanding o f g rav i t y, i n e r ? a , e n e rg y conversions, circular mo?on, momentum and forces.

9 and 10 a9ended a Science and Maths day at the University of Western Sydney. During the day students were amazed with fantas?c experiments using substances such as liquid nitrogen and helium, and they were shown how the wonders of Science fit into everyday life. Students d i s c o v e r e d h o w m u c h f u n studying science would be if they chose to do science subjects for their HSC.

The Metals and Engineering class are working on a project involving student-­‐sea?ng solu?ons. These have been designed, constructed and erected by the students around the schools grounds.

Mr Lockard's Year 11 Industrial Timber class have been on an industry visit to Harper Timber.

The class has now completed their course projects, where students have had the opportunity to d e ve l o p a n d d i s p l ay s o m e outstanding woodworking skills.

SPORTS As the sports coordinator over the past 3 years I have had the pleasure of enjoying a range of success. We are a school that takes great pride in our spor?ng achievement, yet I have not seen the amount and quality of success that has been achieved in the first 3 terms of this year.

The school’s greatest achievement is how broad and extensive our successes have been. We have seen success in Football, AFL, Rugby League, Volleyball, Basketball as well as all the carnivals. We have had students represent at school, Zone, Sydney West, NSW and even Australian level. Last year we had an amazing total of over 300 students represent Rooty Hill High School and this year we are expec?ng to be9er that yet again.

I would also like to congratulate the teaching staff who have assisted in liZing the profile of sport at Rooty Hill High School. Teachers running during and aZer school training sessions, undertaking coaching courses and taking a vested interest in the success of their students is a vital cog to the spor?ng success of this school. Those teachers are Mr Treharne, Mr Wrigley, Mr Diaz, Ms Cain, Ms Andrews, Mr Fowler, Mr Mondinos, Mr Harper, Mr Hay, Ms Halaunga, Ms Haigh, Mr Kumar and Ms Coleman.

Sports Coordinator -­‐ Joel Baines CHS CHAMPIONS AZer progressing through the Sydney West volleyball knockout compe??on undefeated, both the opens boys and girls teams were excited about compe?ng in the NSW CHS Volleyball final series. The compe??on, held at Minto Indoor Sports Stadium on the last two days of term 2 involved the top 32 public school teams in the state. For both Rooty Hill HS teams to qualify is an impressive achievement in itself.

We were only just ge\ng started. The aim for the compe??on was for both teams to win their respec?ve compe??ons. But there was no way our opponents were going to hand it to us on a pla9er. Both teams progressed through to the final aZer having 3 wins each. This set the stage for two epic finals. The boys were to play Sydney Boys High School. A school we have never beaten in an opens volleyball match. The girls were up against Prairiewood High school. A team that we have had previous success against , but a team that has showed significant improvement and not one to be taken lightly.

The boys jumped out of the blocks and won the first 2 sets convincingly. We knew the opposi?on would fight back and that they did. Sydney Boys HS completely shut out our a9ack and smashed us in the next 2 sets. The girls got off to a nervous start and lost the 1st set. We took the 2nd and 3rd. Prairiewood fought back to take the 4th. It was anyone’s game. AZer two exhaus?ng days of volleyball, with mental and physical fa?gue well truly set

(con8nued) in, it was all about guts and determina?on.

The boys could have easily dropped their heads up aZer giving up a significant lead. Even the girls, who overcame a shaky start to gain the upper hand only to lose valuable momentum leading into the final stages of the match.

The Rooty Hill High School PERSIST values were well and truly on display as both of our teams strove to win the gold medal. The boys won their match and a raucous celebra?on followed. The celebra?on was quickly halted as the boys realised the girls were s?ll figh?ng it out on the other court. 3 minutes later, the celebra?on was repeated as Rooty Hill took the double.

It was the first ?me since 1991 that a Sydney West boys team has won this compe??on.

It is the first ?me that one school has won both the boys and girls compe??on in the same year. This was an extraordinary feat and one that will not be forgo9en. Well done to Jodeci Tukuitonga who was awarded boys final MVP and a special men?on must go to both team captains Lucky Sanita and Mark Torzar who led their teams commendably.

The following students won gold medals at the NSW CHS Volleyball finals series. AUSTRALIAN REPRESENTATIVE Felipe Zapata Castro (image on the right) represented N SW C H S at t h e A u st ra l i a n Fo o t b a l l S c h o o l s Championships. Felipe was an integral part of the NSW CHS team winning the Final. His performance was so impressive that he was named Player of the Tournament and chosen to represent Australia when they tour the United Kingdom and Ireland in January 2015. An outstanding achievement!

Natalie O’Connor won the 100m and 200m at the Sydney West Athle?cs Compe??on. She went on to come second overall in the 100m at the CHS Carnival. Mirae Hemi qualified for the CHS Athle?cs Compe??on aZer finishing second in the Shot-­‐put event. Dylan Curmi qualified to compete at the CHS Cross Country Carnival aZer finishing 6th at the Sydney West Cross Country Carnival. Jarred Wright finished in the top 10 in 6 out of the 7 events he entered in the NSW State Swimming Titles. This included Gold in the 200m and 400m Individual Medley. Madeline Romero and Corey Wade represented Sydney West at the NSW CHS Trampolining compe??on in Gosford on the 25th and 26th of August. Unfortunately Madeline was injured during the event however Corey returned with a swag full of medals.

AFL Rooty Hill High School entered an Opens Boys and Under 16s Boys AFL teams in the Greater Western Sydney Giants Cup this year. Both teams demonstrated exci?ng skills and compe??ve spirit with the Under 16s team progressing to the Regional Finals of the compe??on. At the Regional Finals the Under 16s team came up against Hurlstone Agricultural High School, Hennessy Catholic College and WesAields Sports High School. The boys produced dominant displays in the group matches winning 44-­‐0 against Hurlstone and 51-­‐20 against Hennessy. This resulted in mee?ng WesAields Sports High School in the Regional Final.

Once again the team displayed a range of exci?ng skills, excep?onal teamwork and figh?ng spirit, building on their momentum in the group matches to win the final 35-­‐8. The Under 16s team now progress to the State Finals of the GWS Giants Cup compe??on, a first for Rooty Hill High School. Congratula?ons to all students involved for their strong efforts! League Rooty Hill High School had two teams represen?ng the Penrith region at the NSW All Schools Cup. The Under 13s and Under 14s both qualified aZer successful Panther Trophy Compe??ons. The Under 13s lost to the eventual winners in the pool stage but went on to have 1 win and 1 draw in their other matches. The Under 14s were able to progress through the Pool Stage where they unfortunately lost an extremely close semi-­‐final 6-­‐4. It was an outstanding achievement by both.

Wanderers Cup Year 8 Boys and Year 7/8 girls’ team competed at the Blacktown region Western Sydney Wanderers cup. Both teams went through the day undefeated displaying great skill and more importantly outstanding teamwork.
