President AkufoAddo Updates the Nation on fight on Corona Virus From: Prof. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB
President Nana Addo Dankwa on Sunday April 5, 2020 provided the nation with a comprehensive update on the government’s initiatives and measures taken to combat the spread of the Corona virus in the country. In a powerful moving speech to the nation monitored by The Ghanaian News, President AkufoAddo announced that Ghana has recorded a total of 214 cases of COVID-19, with five (5) deaths as at Saturday April 4, 2020. He provided details of the measures taken so far in the fight against the Covid-19 virus and the results so far achieved. President Nana Akufo-Addo The President highly commended the heroic roles that health care professionals have played in the fight against the Corona virus. In appreciation of their efforts, the President announced series of incentive packages for the health care workers. These include the following: • All health workers in the country are to enjoy tax holiday for three months, (April, May and June) as part of government incentive for their sacrifices in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic. • Additionally, frontline health workers will receive a 50% allowance on their
March to June basic salary. • They are also to enjoy free rides to and from work on Ayalolo buses. President Akufo-Addo noted that, Ghana is “about to enter a critical phase of our fight in the coming weeks, as the Ghana Health Service is due to receive the results of some 15,384 out of 19,276 persons who have been reached through contact tracing and tested. “It is the results of these tests that will determine our future course of action. Government’s policy and measures will continue to be driven by the science in this matter”, he said. See summary of the President’s Speech on page 16
FRONT PAGE EDITORIAL Coping with the impact of the Corona virus pandemic in Our Communities The past few weeks have been nerve-wrecking for everyone around the world as a result of the raging impact of the relatively unknown virus called “Corona” or by its scientific “guy name” of COVID-19 that has created a world-wide health pandemic. The scary thing about the raging pandemic is that, little or almost nothing, is known by the health and scientific community about its actual causes or how it can effectively be stopped by way of cure for persons who have been infested by it. All the measures that have been proposed and tried by health care professionals are all in the realm of “try and error”. Around the world, over a million people have been infested by the virus as at the end of March 2020, and over 60,000 have lost their lives to this virus with the highest numbers recorded in Italy, Spain, the United States and China. And the numbers keep growing. The hottest epicenter of the raging virus is now the United States, our next-door neighbor, where close to 400,000 people are infested and over 13,000 people have perished as at the end of the first week of April, 2020. There seems to be no end in sight for this raging pandemic, or how to treat persons who are suffering from it. A number of measures that have been announced by governments around the world have been similar: lockdowns of whole cities, towns, communities and borders, all aimed at combatting the spread of the virus. Mandatory and self-quarantine orders have been invoked on communities. These measures, along with the closure of work places, businesses and schools have had untold hardships and severe inconveniences on people. Many people have lost their jobs as a result of these governmentimposed measures. Like other citizens, members of Ghanaian communities in North America have been severely impacted by the raging pandemic, and the attendant government-imposed measures, including community lockdowns. Across the border in the United States, we are saddened to learn of the death of at least ten people of Ghanaian origin in the City of New York alone to the virus as at Friday April 3rd, 2020. Although no such tragic news have been reported cont’d on pg. 6
