the Montreal Black community Businesses is inline with Trudeau’s vision in supporting Black Businesses to make sure that they survive. During Trudeau’s visit Nana and his staff welcomed the Prime Minister to the Store with introduction to his Wife and the Staff members. He then showed him around with most of the products on display. Nana took him to his office and showed the PM some African Wall paintings which were very impressive to Tredeau. The entire visit lasted about an hour. At the end of it all, Nana emotionally pleaded with Tredeau’s Government to help the Ghanaian Community in Canada to create more programs to support the Youth and Women. In his response to the request the Prime Minister told Nana to call his office. 2022

Articles appearing in various columns of the Ghanaian News are intended to generate civil and informed public discussions. You do not have to agree with opinions expressed by the writers. That should encourage you to write to express your own views. This is the way we generate lively and civil discussions in the community. Rejoinders are not forums for personal insults and we want readers to adhere to these principles.
We all know of the economic, political and social successes of many migrant communities in Canada. We also know that the key to their economic, political and social successes has been due to only one major act of their community members: patronage of the businesses in their various communities. There’s a common saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.” The power of the community has paved the way for many of our community business owners. When you choose to support community-owned businesses, you’re supporting community pride and unity. While that may be intimidating to some, it would mean the world to many families and communities. Ghanaian entrepreneurship is a tool for survival in a world that does not want to see us win. When we win against all odds, our young children grow up seeing successful entrepreneurs and the world a better place. We do not need to stretch this point very far. We can see these realities of the success of other communities around us. We can take tours of those businesses and establishments and we will come away with only one major reality: the active patronage of these businesses by their community members. Charity, they say, begins at home. “Home” in this context means ‘our own communities’ right here in Canada. When businesses in our communities flourish, the benefits transcend to the larger communities as well. The economic success will enable the businesses support initiatives in our communities from support for youth education, recreation, services and by extension creating a positive image for our community.

The Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa, and Madagascar (SECAM) (www. SECAM.org), the association of Catholic Bishops of Africa, Madagascar, and the Islands, has elected His Eminence Richard Kuuia Baawobr of Ghana as its new President. His Eminence Richard Kuuia Baawobr is now the highest-ranking member of the Roman Catholic Church in Africa. The election took place in Accra, Ghana, during the 19th Plenary Assembly of SECAM, whereby 130 participants, including cardinals and bishops representing over 600 catholic bishops of Africa came from all corners of the continent. The new President succeeds His Eminence Philippe Cardinal Ouédraogo from Burkina Faso. Another Cardinal, His Eminence Fridolin Besungu Ambongo of the Archdiocese of Kinshasha, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was elected First Vice-President, while Most Rev. Lucio Andrice Muandula of the Diocese of Xai Xai, in Mozambique, was elected Second Vice President. The new President of SECAM, His Eminence Richard Kuuia Baawobr, was created a Cardinal on May 29, 2022 by Pope Francis and will be officially installed Cardinal on August 27, 2022. This is the first time since the establishment of SECAM, 53 years ago that a Ghanaian has been elected the President of SECAM. The SECAM, established in 1969 in Kampala, Uganda during the visit of St. Pope Paul VI, was born out of the desire of African Catholic Bishops present at the Second Vatican Council to speak with one voice on matters pertaining to the Church in Africa. Distributed by APO Group on behalf of Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM).

The economic successes will also lead to social and political recognition from the larger Canadian community. Again we can see evidence of these around us from other communities: their economic and business successes mean that the larger society takes them seriously. This has enabled them to make inroads into the bigger political arena enabling them to be part of the vital decision-making process of the country that eventually affect all of us. We therefore entreat our community members to take cues from the above and actively and strongly patronize the businesses in our community. It is very important. It is vital and it is the major key to our communities’ success, revival, recognition and future strength
The 5 day Expo is an avenue for Black communities to come together to learn about the impact that African Canadian Businesses are having in Business and Society after the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Justin Trudeau’s vision in supporting Black Businesses was demonstrated when recently visited some of the Black Community Businesses in Montreal to make sure that they survive. See story and pictures on that visit in this issue of the Ghanaian News. While we encourage our community businesses to strive for higher heights, the Ghanaian News wish to use this opportunity and this column to strongly advise and appeal to our community members to consciously and strongly patronize the businesses in our various Ghanaian community Businesses here in Canada.

FREEDOM IS EMANCIPATION DAY AND MORE
Following the extraordinary efforts of Rosemary Sadlier, on March 24, 2021, the House of Commons officially designated August 1 as Emancipation Day across Canada. “ – CABR unit
Imagine being identified as the driving force, the initiator of August 1st as Emancipation Day by the Confronting Anti-Black Racism Unit of the City of Toronto and knowing that the Black Liberation Flag raising ceremony held at North York Civic Centre is in part honouring my efforts!!! “
Historically, freedom, and ways to celebrate freedom, included sporting events and it is our intention to pivot to something a bit more tangible and connected to our current resources as an ad hoc team. We celebrate Emancipation Day because it confirms that on the lands we now call Canada there once was slavery, slavery that included Indigenous peoples and Africans. We celebrate because slavery, chattel slavery, the loss of ownership of oneself from birth to death, in this country, is over but we also celebrate the resilience of the people who went before us, the people who were enslaved and were given their freedom - with little else and still managed to eke out an existence to this very day. We celebrate the perseverance of people who despite the obstacles they faced due to the colour of their skin, found a way to build build character, build churches, communities and help develop this country.
We are still in a need of working on, establishing the freedom, that our ancestors on these very lands then it was for freedom from unpaid work from dawn to dusk and freedom to own their own families and themselves but what is freedom for us now we need the freedom that removes us from micro aggressions the freedom for the opportunities to secure the types of training or employment that we wish through to finding freedom to have our story, our history included as part of the curriculum and the national narrative, freedom to be fully represented at the front of the house and in the board rooms of the countless levels of government corporations and industry. It’s the freedom to join with others or to act on your own to find a way to make things better so that the next generation will have to again will be able to experience the freedoms we enjoy and maybe even additional ones We are still in the UN International Decade for People of African Descent and according to the UN: “There are around 200 million people identifying themselves as being of African descent live in the Americas. Many millions more live in other parts of the world, outside of the African continent. Whether as descendants of the victims of the transatlantic slave trade or as more recent migrants, they constitute some of the poorest and most marginalized groups. Studies and findings by international and national bodies demonstrate that people of African descent still have limited access to quality education, health services, housing and social security. In many cases, their situation remains largely invisible, and insufficient recognition and respect has been given to the efforts of people of African descent to seek redress for their present condition. They all too often experience discrimination in their access to justice, and face alarmingly high rates of police violence, together with racial profiling.”
others in planning and celebrating with our generous partner at York Lions/York University for actual in-person 2022 event!
Day is a time to give consideration both to Canada’s role in slavery and to the impact of freedom then and now, as well as those barriers that still have to be challenged.
SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER
By Rosemary Sadlier OOnt August 1st Emancipation Day marks the date that the historic 1833 passage of the British Imperial Act went into effect in Canada - August 1st, 1834. On the lands we now call Canada, first Indigenous peoples and then Africans were enslaved. This Act ensured the end of the enslavement of Africans not only in Canada, but in British controlled regions around the globe. It was the first global freedom legislation and it sparked other global nations to effect their own freedom laws. For Africans in the West, this Act also was met with spontaneous outbursts of prayer and thanksgiving, of song and dance, of heartfelt relief from the years of forced work as slaves and statutory inequality. It created the conditions for the first freedom movement of the Americasthe Underground Railroad since now, the entire country of Canada (controlled by Britain at the time) granted freedom to any enslaved person reaching Canadian soil. Thousands of enslaved African Americans secretly and quickly made their way here. They stayed and others followed - strong, resilient and determined to build family, life, and community. They reframed Emancipationfreedom.
While many members of the African Canadian community are excelling in their chosen fields, until we are all managing, free to have our basic needs met and even to have our dreams realized, we have a duty to keep seeking the changes that will support an even better ‘freedom’ for the coming generations. What will you do to make it so?

I am the proponent of many formal commemorations of people, places and events. Previously, I held the role of President of the Ontario Black History Society (OBHS), the sole Provincial Heritage Organization in Canada, for over 22 years. In this capacity, I initiated the formal celebrations of February as Black History Month at all levels of government, and initiated the first (1994) of many commemorations of August 1st as Emancipation Day. Subsequent to my involvement with the OBHS, I chaired the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) for 4 years where I initiated the first advocacy of this organization, with RCS Canada, in 42 years with a Parliamentary Petition towards commemorating Emancipation Day. I secured national support for Emancipation Day during, apart and subsequent to my connection to these organizations, through community engagement, international outreach and partnership as well as educational initiatives and advocacy. I had never been to an Emancipation Day event before I began my journey of initiating formal commemoration for it. From a modest event at Metro Hall with an Emancipation Day cake, through to celebrations at the Legislative Assembly/ Queen’s Park, the event and awareness of the importance grew. This allowed for mutual exchanges of speakers on Emancipation from the Caribbean (ie. UWI), Washington, D.C. (i.e. DC Emancipation) and the U.S. in general (eg. Juneteenth). All Consulates were involved with the Ontario celebrations I coordinated, which featured all political parties, and, with the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario His Hon. David Onley, facilitated joint celebrations of Emancipation Day and Simcoe Day at Fort York National Historic Site reaching upwards of 2000 people. Star of film and stage, Ngozi Paul had invited me over several years to participate in Emancipation Arts for August 1st poetry and spoken word events. Then she created FreeUp! a nationally televised production during which she had the Rosemary Sadlier Freedom Award given out. The first year, it was presented to Jully Black, the second, to dbi young and this year, I had the double honour of being able to present, in-person, to Joe Sealy. Imagine giving out a national award in my own name! On CBC and streamed on CBC Gem!
While I am not Opal Lee, the grandmother of Juneteenth in the U.S., I do have a long and continuous role in initiating, following through, advocating, creating events, having flag raisings, launching petitions and meeting with a variety of elected officials during the 27 years I worked on this. I was responsible for all formal commemorations of Emancipation Day through to the most recent passage of M-36 introduced by MP Majid Jowhari, creating August 1st as Emancipation Day across Canadanow 13 years after securing unanimous approval in the Province of Ontario (2008), it has received similar unanimous support nationally! In 2020, I held the first international commemoration of Emancipation Day online due to covid-19, with representatives from Nigeria, Ghana, Britain, the Caribbean and across Canada. I was delighted recently, to work with York University, and other community partners, on the 2021 commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of Black History Month and work with this dynamic group to commemorate the first national August 1st as Emancipation Day. To engage youth and families, a sports event which will featured team sports in basketball was part of how I joined with

The study, published in Science Advances on Wednesday, is aimed at helping local governments carry out targeted efforts to limit global warming by pinpointing specific sites of major concern. When organic waste like food, wood or paper decomposes, it emits methane into the air. Landfills are the third-largest source of methane emissions globally, after oil and gas systems and agriculture. Although methane only accounts for about 11% of greenhouse gas emissions and lasts about a dozen years in the air, it traps 80 times more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide does. Scientists estimate that at least 25% of today’s warming is driven by methane from human actions.
“This is the first time that highresolution satellite images have been used to observe landfills and calculate their methane emissions,” said Joannes Maasakkers, lead author of the study and atmospheric scientist at the Netherlands Institute for Space Research. “We found that these landfills, which are relatively small compared to city sizes, are responsible for a large fraction of total emissions from a given area,” he said.
Satellite data to detect emissions is still a relatively new field, but it’s being used more and more to observe gases across the world. It means more independent organizations are tracking greenhouse gases and identifying big emitters, whereas previously local government figures were the only source available.
“It is a quickly developing field and we expect more interesting data to come out soon,” said Maasakkers. The Associated Press
Landfills are releasing far more planet-warming methane into the atmosphere from the decomposition of waste than previously thought, a study Scientistssuggests.usedsatellite data from four major cities worldwide - Delhi and Mumbai in India, Lahore in Pakistan and Buenos Aires in Argentina - and found that emissions from landfills in 2018 and 2019 were 1.4 to 2.6 times higher than earlier estimates.
“This new work shows just how important it is to manage landfills better, especially in countries like India where landfills are often on fire, emitting a wide range of damaging pollutants,” said Euan Nesbit, an Earth scientist at Royal Holloway, University of London, who wasn’t part of the study.
Earlier this year, smoke hung over New Delhi for days after a massive landfill caught fire as the country was sweltering in an extreme heat wave with temperatures surpassing 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit). At least two other landfill fires have been reported in India this year. Nesbit added that the newer satellite technology, combined with onthe-ground measurements, makes it easier for researchers to identify “who is polluting the world.” China, India and Russia are the world’s biggest methane polluters, a recent analysis by the International Energy Agency found. At last year’s United Nations climate conference, 104 countries signed a pledge to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030 compared with 2020 levels. Both India and China are not Thesignatories.authors plan to carry out more research into landfill sites across the world in future studies.

Satellite data finds landfills are methane ‘super emitters’

10 The Ghanaian News July 2022 FOCUS
AS PARENTS: Perhaps most parents become very happy when it is September! That the time they ‘ship’ their children (with all the headaches they give to them at home) back to school and for that matter to teachers after the long school break. This assumption notwithstanding, parents still have a lot to do for their children and those who teach their kids if we want a successful school year for our children. Parents have the responsibility (I call it-obligation) to ensure that their children are well fed, appropriately clothed and ready with all their school supplies needed before they leave home for school. Opportunities are there for parents to know their child’s teacher before they are summoned to the school on their child’s misconduct or poor academic academic performance sooner or later. There is much to gain and nothing to lose if we team up with those who teach our children from the beginning of the school year to ensure that our kids succeed at school. It is also profitable to supervise or monitor our children’s homework from school each night right at the beginning of the school year. Such early parental supervision of the child’s school work at home would leave no room for laziness on the part of our kids when it comes to school work. The early bird catches the worms! Many, if not all schools, send information and special permission forms with students home at the beginning of the school year. Parents must ensure that that such letters and permission forms are carefully read, understood and those needed to be signed and returned to the school are duly complied with.
The online survey was completed by 1,764 Canadians between July 8 and 10. It cannot be assigned a margin of error because online polls are not considered truly random samples. For Canadians whose primary language is French, 91 per cent reported a strong sense of attachment to their language, in comparison to 67 per cent who reported the same sentiment for Canada. In Quebec, more people reported a strong sense of attachment to their primary language than to the province. Only 37 per cent of Canadians reported a strong sense of attachment to a religious group.
AS STUDENTS: There is a Ghanaian adage that says: ‘no one drinks medicine for a sick person’. Students must know and understand that they go to school to learn! Though teachers are there to help them learn, much of how they succeed as learners depends on them as students. The long vacation often causes students to forget most of what they have learned the previous school year and since the early days of the new academic year are used to revise stuff learned at the previous grade level students ought to take such days seriously. There should not be playing of truancy! Punctuality, timely completion of homework and positive attitude towards studies are obvious hallmarks of success at school and all students ought to chalk them. Let’s have fruitful and successful school year as we go back to school in September!!
A new survey finds more Canadians report a strong attachment to their primary language than to other markers of identity, including the country they call home. The survey, which was conducted by Leger for the Association for Canadian Studies, found 88 per cent of respondents reported a strong sense of attachment to their primary language, whereas 85 per cent reported the same for Canada. The greater importance of language was especially notable among francophones and Indigenous ReportsPeoples. of strong attachment to primary language exceeded all other markers of identity, including geography, ethnic group, racialized identity and religious affiliation. Of the markers of identity considered in the survey, Canadians were the least likely to report a strong sense of attachment to a religious group.
Jedwab said the census release will be especially important to Quebec, where there’s a close monitoring of the state of the French language in comparison to other languages.
News 416-916-3700
The findings come ahead of Statistics Canada’s latest census release on languages in the country, which is set to be published on Wednesday.
Association for Canadian Studies president Jack Jedwab said the survey’s findings highlight the important role language plays in people’s identities. “I think many Canadians may be surprised by it, who may not think intuitively that language is as important as other expressions of identity that get attention,” he said.
Jedwab said people should be mindful of not downplaying the importance of language given how significant language can be to a community. He said language has a dual function of facilitating communication and being an expression of culture. “There can be a tendency for people to diminish the importance of other languages,” he said. “We’ve not paid historically sufficient attention to Indigenous languages, which we’re now seeing our federal government invest considerably in, trying to help sustain and revive Indigenous languages,” he added.
Call Us First The
The Leger survey also found more than half of francophone Quebecers
Next month we (students and teachers in Ontario) go back to school after the long break. The last school year saw after long online classes for schools some difficult but manageable in-person learning at schools even ending up with in-person graduation ceremonies at most schools. This year ads and sales targeting students going back to school this September have not been ‘crazy’ as they use to be some years ago. All the same students and teachers are going back to school. What do we do as parents, teachers and students as schools re-open in September? We need to plan ahead, give ourselves deadlines with the goals we set, get started and review our performances/ goals for successes and, look critically into our failures making amends where necessary from time to time.
Going Back to School Soon! What do we do?
AS TEACHERS: Teaching is a profession and those who enter it must demonstrate professionalism in their duties. It is the duty of every teacher to prepare for the school year. It is therefore incumbent upon every teacher to go through the curriculum they would be using to teach during the school year and plan the syllabus for the year or at least for the term before students return to school. The decision by the government to seek for a balance of payment support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has generated intense debate among politicians, policy analysts and the general Thepublic.engagement with the IMF was inevitable because since January this year, both Fitch ratings and Moody’s downgraded Ghana’s bonds to barely above the threshold for investment grade. This has made it difficult for investors in the country’s cedi denominated domestic debt securities shy away while at the same time, making any new Eurobond issuance impossible due to the prohibitively high coupon rates that investors would demand. Indeed, it is instructive that the securing of a syndicated international bank loan of $2 billion was delayed due to pricing issues. Consequently, Ghana has been forced to draw down its gross international reserves at an inordinate rate and the country’s net international reserves, after accounting for imminent capital account payment obligations are becoming precariously low. Consequently, the cedi has been in a tailspin so far this year, falling by some 37 per cent already since the beginning of the year. The current official rate of GH¢9.95 to US$1 is dwarfed by the current black market of nearly GH¢10 to a dollar and that is where many enterprises are now forced to source their forex from. Actually, the ongoing forex shortages point to a structural problem with Ghana’s economic management that the IMF needs to address with urgency.
The hard fact is that, the forex aspect of Ghana’s economy has been kept afloat by both rising levels of outstanding foreign debtwhich rose by $3.8 billion from $24.6 billion to US$28.4 billion over the 12-month period alone, up to end of May this year – and by rising inflows of forex from foreign investment into the domestic debt. Effectively, servicing these rising debts has only been made possible by even bigger net inflows in a manner akin to a pyramid scheme. Now that Ghana is unable to do yet another Eurobond issue and the net forex inflows from foreign investment into the domestic debt have reversed into net outflows, a forex shortage has become Therefore, inevitable. the immediate task for the IMF should be to reverse those outflows by providing Ghana with “policy credibility”. This involves providing confidence to the international investment community that it can and will, working with government itself, ensure Ghana’s debt sustainability over the short, medium and long Thisterms.should be accompanied by balance of payment support to significantly restore Ghana’s gross – and net – international reserves. These actions should serve to solve Ghana’s current forex shortages challenge and improve its balance of payment position in line with the Fund’s central mandate. Beyond these immediate tasks are the design and the implementation of a medium-term programme that will solve the longer term structural problems facing Ghana’s economy and the policies through which it is Thismanaged.iswhere the fears of civil society leaders are strongest, since IMF programmes are basically demand-management driven, thus requiring belt tightening by the Ghana’spopulace. negotiating team should leverage the greater flexibility the Fund now allows compared with times gone by to ensure the continuation of social protection interventions for the most vulnerable segments of the populace. Such interventions were retained during the immediate past IMF programme – the Extended Credit Facility programme which ran from 2015 to 2019 – and should be retained in the new programme Ghana is about to enter.
The Ontario Medical Association says 22 million patient services were delayed over the course of the pandemic, 10 million of which were surgeries and cancer screening
Temporary emergency room closures and increased wait times have become increasingly common in Ontario as the province’s healthcare system grapples with staffing Premiershortages.
However, Ghana must accept the fact that not all socio-economic interventions are affordable and useful. For instance, free Senior High School should only be provided to households that clearly cannot afford to pay. Households that can afford to pay should be made to do so. This requires strong political will since the free SHS was a fundamental election promise of the incumbent administration but the IMF would be willing to play the Furthermore, villain. government should be willing to distinguish between economically productive and unproductive capital expenditure, putting politics and purely social considerations aside, until the country’s economic challenges are Forresolved.instance, government should accept the IMF’s obvious desire to stop public expenditure on the National Cathedral for now. Beyond the immediate, a longer term policy must focus on ensuring that Ghana does not return to its current predicament through structural shortcomings although there are no ways to ensure that sheer inept or financially malfeasant governance will not generate such unwanted situations in the future. Trade surplus concerns will require deliberate efforts to improve Ghana’s trade surplus even further. The fastest way to do this is to reduce the import bill through import substitution; here it is instructive that Ghana’s current trade surpluses, after decades of continuous trade deficits, are primarily the result of substituting imported diesel with locally generated gas for energy Furthergeneration.import substitution should be encouraged through fiscal incentives. Taxes foregone would be recouped by other taxes from increased local economic activity and new jobs created. Over the longer term, the country needs to increase its exports, both traditional and non-traditional. The biggest opportunities here remain in increased oil and solid mineral (especially gold) exports, through the early development of the new fields and mines already planned. After all, these are what persuaded international bond investors to buy Ghana’s Eurobonds in the first place, over the past nine years. Indeed, this is why some analysts assert that this time around, the IMF programme needs to go beyond the correction of Ghana’s short-term balance of payments position. The economy’s entire external sector needs to be restructured.

KFC Africa Partners with Serge Ibaka to Empower Youth through Basketball
The first of these basketball courts was recently built and donated in Kenya, as a result of a partnership between KFC and the Jonathan Jackson Foundation (JJF). This was initiated under the Bakee Mtaani (‘basketball in the hood’) initiative, at the Humama Public Grounds in Kayole Community, and also sees youth within the community benefitting from basketball equipment and coaching programmes at the new court. In addition to this, a significantly positive spin-off was that the construction of the court resulted in jobs for more than 50 skilled and unskilled youths. With regards to the courts initiative specifically, this is just the beginning – ambitious plans are underway for another 11 courts in Kenya in coming months, as well as additional projects in other markets including Botswana, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal and Tanzania.
“We are also extremely excited about our epic collab with Serge Ibaka – an African basketball legend – to further highlight the strength and potential of the game. It goes without saying that Serge is a true inspiration to our youth, and by joining forces, we accelerate growth and development for the stars of the future.”
Born in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, Serge is a three-time NBA All-Defensive First Team selection and has twice led the league in blocks. In 2019, he won his first NBA championship as a key member of the Toronto Raptors.
Adding his perspective, Serge Ibaka says, “The talent that Africa is producing is just amazing and my goal is to inspire them and to contribute to ensure that the next generation is given every opportunity to shine in the game I love. I am very proud to be able to partner with KFC Africa to give more back to my home continent. Having basketball courts in their local communities, close to young players, is a huge advantage in helping them to develop their basketball and life skills.”

KFC Africa believes in fuelling the passion-points of the young, and young at heart, by connecting at the touch-points that mean something across its markets. “With Serge being such an icon in the game, it made perfect sense for us to take up the opportunity to partner with him to bring our brand’s support of basketball to life. Additionally, it is through initiatives like this that KFC Africa aims to see more young players from Africa level up both on and off the court, whilst creating a lasting legacy for generations to come,”

In the oil sector, a number of positive developments aimed at boosting production have already been recorded and many more are set to follow. Tullow Oil, for example, launched a $350 million investment program to increase output in the Jubilee offshore oilfield while Eni and Kosmos Energy, in partnership with GNPC, increased exploration spending in the west African market. With the demand for African oil and gas expanding both at domestic level – as Africa seeks to lift over 600 million people out energy poverty while providing access to clean cooking to over 900 million people –and at international level – as markets such as Europe seek to diversify energy supply away from Russia -, Hon. Blay is well positioned to shape discussions around the future of African energy. With the NOC prioritizing maximizing foreign direct investments to boost upstream, midstream and downstream activities to optimize the exploitation of domestic hydrocarbon resources in a bid to reduce the west African country’s dependence on crude oil imports whilst ensuring that Ghana achieves its 100% universal electricity access target by 2030, AEW 2022 presents the best platform for Hon. Blay to highlight investment opportunities across the country’s entire oil and gas value chain.

The United States has an abiding interest in ensuring the region remains open and accessible to all and that governments and publics are able to make their own political choices, consistent with international obligations. Open societies are generally more inclined to work in common cause with the United States, attract greater U.S. trade and investment, pursue policies to improve conditions for their citizens, and counter harmful activities by the People’s Republic of China, Russia, and other actors. We will foster openness and open societies, including
Building on the Biden-Harris Administration’s actions and commitments to deepen our engagement and partnerships in Africa during the past year, the strategy articulates our new vision for a 21st Century U.S.-African Partnership. It recognizes the tremendous, positive opportunities that exist to advance shared interests alongside our African partners. At the same time, we acknowledge that Africa’s potential will continue to be challenged as long as deadly conflicts divide societies, corruption impedes economic progress, food insecurity heightens the risk of famine and malnutrition, and repression stifles human rights and democratic expression. As President Biden noted in his address to the African Union last year, “none of this is going to be easy but the United States stands ready now to be your partner, in solidarity, support, and mutual respect.”
Ukraine has also accused Russia of exporting stolen Ukrainian wheat, claiming it is Russian, and of planting mines in Ukrainian fields so farmers cannot plant or harvest their crops.

Building on the Biden-Harris Administration’s actions and commitments to deepen our engagement and partnerships in Africa during the past year, the strategy articulates our new vision for a 21st Century U.S.-African Partnership Sub-Saharan Africa plays a critical role in advancing global priorities to the benefit of Africans and Americans. It has one of the world’s fastest growing populations, largest free trade areas, most diverse ecosystems, and one of the largest regional voting groups in the United Nations (UN). It is impossible to meet today’s defining challenges without African contributions and leadership. The region will factor prominently in efforts to: end the COVID-19 pandemic; tackle the climate crisis; reverse the global tide of democratic backsliding; address global food insecurity; promote gender equity and equality; strengthen an open and stable international system; shape the rules of the world on vital issues like trade, cyber, and emerging technologies; and confront the threat of terrorism, conflict, and transnational crime.
The new U.S. Strategy Toward SubSaharan Africa represents a reframing of Africa’s importance to U.S. national security interests. We will pursue four main objectives in sub-Saharan Africa:
The world food crisis, made worse by the war in Ukraine, is leading to a rise in underage girls being forced into marriage, Canadian aid agencies warn. The country’s crops have been hit by severe flooding this year and it relies on Ukraine for much of its wheat. Tanjina Mirza, chief programs officer at Plan International Canada, said fewer girls are now being forced into marriage with investment in education in Bangladesh but this trend is under threat due to poverty, food shortages and the impact of climate change. She said Plan employees on the ground are reporting more girls being pulled out of school to be married in areas with acute food shortages. School meal programs, including those giving students rations to take home to encourage them to stay in school, are being shut down because of shortages, Mirza said in an interview. She said Plan is increasing provision of food, including through school meal programs, to try to keep children in school. Mirza said hunger is affecting 345 million people, with Ethiopia, South Sudan, Haiti, Burkina Faso and Niger among the most “food insecure” Shecountries.said50 million people could face famine across 45 countries this year, and “girls’ needs” — particularly adolescent girls — are often ignored when hunger grips a society. “We are in the grip of a devastating hunger situation that’s currently affecting millions of children globally,” she said. “Food insecurity exposes girls to dangers such as abuse, child labour and child marriage that lessens the financial burden on families: having one less mouth to feed and one less child to send to school is, in many cases, a matter of survival.” She said “parents facing dire circumstances” are arranging marriages for their teenage daughters, but this is perpetuating “the cycle of poverty and hunger.”

Back on July 8, Brampton City Council unanimously passed a motion to rename Dixie 407 Sports Park as Emancipation Park. “As the first Black woman elected to city council in the history of Brampton, I was proud to move the motion to create a recognition of Emancipation in October of 2019. The recent events that have elevated our understanding of anti-Black racism could not have been foreseen when I brought this initiative forward,” Coun. Charmaine Williams said in an Aug. 1 news release. “However, I am so proud to say that Brampton is home to Emancipation Park. To the best of my knowledge it is the first Emancipation Park anywhere in Canada. I look forward to seeing more initiatives that increase our historical understanding of the roots of anti Black racism as we work to tear down the barriers that hold back human Bramptonpotential.”City Council has also proclaimed Aug. 1 as Emancipation Day, and August as Emancipation Month in that city. Several online events will be held throughout the month to celebrate Brampton’s diversity and honour this important observance.

Themembership.legal requirements aside, a marriage must be genuine in order to warrant immigration sponsorship consideration. Several factors such as multiplicity of marriages and common-law relationships, duration of previous marriages, period of courtship, degree of interdependence, amount of time spent together, level of knowledge of each other’s relationship histories, knowledge of and contact with extended families of the parties, financial support and communication all combine to determine genuineness of a marital relationship for immigration and sponsorship purposes.

WHAT IMMIGRATION
One should not underestimate the investigative capabilities of the Immigration. The Immigration authorities store past information for future use and reference. For that matter, applicants must draw their counsel’s attention to past and present information they might have provided the Immigration that could be relevant to their cases. Applicants should be truthful and consistent with the information they give to their counsel and to the Immigration. The effectiveness of a counsel could be severely limited by non-disclosure of facts, inadequate cooperation, untruthful disclosure and inconsistency Marriages of convenience appear to be on the ascent and it is becoming a matter of great concern to immigration officials. Immigration authorities have accordingly raised the level of assessment, investigations and procedures of spousal sponsorships. Canada Immigration has the resources to do their work and it would be a sad mistake for one to underestimate or overlook their investigative powers. Prospective sponsors should seek the advice or assistance of a competent professional whenever necessary to avoid unnecessary frustration, delays and costly appeals in your sponsorships.

Brampton’s Dixie 407 Sports Park has a new name, one that honours the abolition of slavery. Located south of Highway 407 at Dixie Road, the 100-acre green space, which has both minor and major soccer pitches as well as cricket grounds, is now known as Emancipation Park.

Section 117(9)(a) of the Immigration Regulations excludes spouses under the age of 18 years from family class
Some cases of sponsorship refusals are based – directly or indirectly - on issues related to the previous marriages. In situations where partners separated as soon as the sponsored relative obtained permanent residency, there is the suspicion of marriage of convenience. Also, cases of multiple marriages are sometimes singled out for special treatments. Incidents of multiple marriages within “unreasonably” short period of time are causes for concern.

This topic is being revisited in view of its importance and problems spouses run into in the course of sponsoring their spouses to Canada. Unlike parent-child relationship, marriages and adoptions are principally non-biological. The origin and continued existence of relationships like marriages and adoption are proved by documentation and by some other means other than biological. One should not expect authorities, including Canada Immigration, to summarily presume that relationships like marriages and adoptions are legally valid and genuine. Thus, in the eyes of the Immigration, a legally valid adoption or marriage is not necessarily a genuine relationship and vice versa. The onus of proving the legal validity and genuineness of such relationships is on the applicants. Canada Immigration would recognize marriage for immigration purposes only when the marriage in question is valid under the laws of the jurisdiction where the marriage took place and under Canadian law. Customary marriages may pose some problems but if the marriage is done in accordance with the laws of the jurisdiction where the marriage took place, Canada Immigration may not have serious concerns. Proxy marriages – be it civil or customary –are currently unacceptable in Canada for Immigration purposes. Section 5(c) of the Immigration Regulations have been amended to read “both parties are to be physically present at the time of the marriage ceremony” while section 117(9) states that if one of the parties was not present, then the foreign national is not considered a member of the family class. Generally, Canadian laws would require a married couple to have a marriage certificate by following the necessary legal procedure. The laws require previously married applicants to be legally divorced before they marry again. Canada Immigration would generally recognize a foreign divorce for two partners who are ordinarily resident in Canada for immigration sponsorship purposes when the divorce is issued from a non-domiciliary court where the decree is recognized by the law of domicile of the parties provided either of the spouses was ordinarily resident in the foreign jurisdiction for one year immediately preceding the application for the divorce. The Canadian laws require two people who contract marriage not to be related by whole-blood, half-blood or by adoption. Also, to be recognized for immigration purposes, foreign national spouses must be 18 years of age.

Ghana’s banking sector recorded GH¢4.4 billion in profit before tax in first-half of 2022, data from the Bank of Ghana has revealed. This represented 21.6 percent growth, compared with 32.1 percent in the previous year. According to the Bank of Ghana , growth in net interest income was slower than the previous. However, net fees and commissions shot up significantly, over the previous year. Net interest income grew at 12.4 percent, compared with 19.4 percent a year ago. Net fees and commissions, however, grew by 29.2 percent, compared to 19.6 percent in the previous year, reflecting a rebound in trade finance-related business. These developments, the Central Bank, said culminated in a 23.0 percent growth in operating income, compared with a growth of 15.7 percent in the corresponding year.
after drought affected cocoa pods and activities of illegal small-scale mining which are reported to have damaged cocoa plantations in key areas. According to preliminary data, Ghana, which is the second largest producer of cocoa, will harvest an estimated 685,000 tonnes of beans in the season through September. This however represents a decline of about 1.05 million tonnes from the previous year according to persons familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified by Bloomberg. The Ghana Cocobod has earlier projected a crop yield of 950,000 tonnes for the 2022 season but the forecast was impacted by long spells of drought at the start of the planting season.

The International Monetary Fund has revised the growth rate of the global economy to 3.2 percent in 2022, 0.4 percentage point lower than in the April 2022 World Economic Outlook. This is also far lower than the 6.1 percent Gross Domestic Product (GDP) recorded in 2021. Already, Ghana has revised its growth rate to 3.6 percent, from the earlier 5.8 percent. The Fund’s July 2022 Economic Outlook report attributed the slowdown in the growth rate to tightening global financial conditions associated with expectations of steeper interest rate hikes by major central banks to ease inflation pressure, and spillovers from the war in Ukraine. Global inflation has also been revised up due to food and energy prices as well as lingering supply-demand imbalances, and is anticipated to reach 6.6 percent in advanced economies and 9.5 percent in emerging markets and developing economies this year, upward revisions of 0.9 and 0.8 percentage points, respectively.

Chief Executive of DTI, Ms. Constance Elizabeth Swaniker said that the action is going to bridge the gap between academia and the world of work. She emphasized on the need for industry professionals to work closely with the universities to train industry-ready students. “Industry will tell you that this is not a training ground, it is the role of the university to train and ensure that our students transition well into the world of work. *Bora Balanced Unit Trust*

Ezra Marfo was born in June of 2020 in a small Albertan town. In 2021, Ezra was diagnosed with a rare form of Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). He has been on admission at both the Stollery in Edmonton and the Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary for more than a year. The difficult-to-treat cancer requires a stem cell transplant as part of the treatment. Unfortunately, with very few Black Africans on the donor list, no complete match has been found for him. His dad was found to be only a partial match and became a donor in September of 2021. After uncountable rounds of chemo, radiation and other treatments, Ezra has relapsed and urgently requires another stem cell transplant for the chance to survive. His condition is getting worse by the day and your help is needed to save him. Ezra's favorite song is Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and he loves to play with toy cars. Can Ezra count on you? Unfortunately, less than 1% of the Canadian Blood Services’ Stem Cell Registry is made up of people of African descent making it hard for patients like Ezra to find a match.

The Late Elizabeth D. Mensah formation and journey. The Leadership and members of the congregation could not hide their excitement about the feast they have achieved together as a community of faith. In his sermon, the Rev. Nyarko preached on the theme, “Under Compulsion to Preach the Gospel” referencing from I Corinthians 9:16-17 And Ezekiel 3:17-21. He said, Paul was dealing with the call to preach. The compulsion is in the call. That’s what drives all God-called individuals that have been called by God. “Woe is me if I preach not the gospel!” This same call gripped the soul of Jonah. Once he had thought he could flee his call. But his stay in the whale’s belly, in what he himself called, “the belly of hell” had left its indelible mark upon him. He concluded by saying, “Please I don’t want to be held accountable for your blood. Don’t be the reason I will perish. As your minister, I will preach because I am under compulsion to do that. It is true that some men are in the ministry, but they are not following Christ and they are not even Christians. Let’s be proud of our calling as Christians than our church name… cont’d from pg. 18

Bringing the Gospel to our Community By Rev. Isaac De-Graft Takyi
This month we want to consider the question of “How to Live in the Holy Spirit.” The emphasis will be on the “Baptism in the Holy Spirit.” It is essential to know that God the Holy Spirit lives in every Christian. However, the Bible also teaches that we can be filled with the Holy Spirit and receive an extra amount of power for service. We shall utilize a question-and-answer method. Kindly make time to read the scriptural references for clarity and understanding. What does the Bible say on the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
5. What are the conditions to receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit?(a) Turning from our sin—Repentance. (b) An openness to receive.
THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE OLD TESTAMENT In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit would come upon certain people to empower them for service. However, the Holy Spirit did not come upon all people and permanently stay with them as in the New Covenant. Moses received the Law from God and was empowered by the Holy Spirit. At one point, God decided to empower some elders as well so that Moses would have others to share the burden of leading the people. (Numbers 11:2429, Numbers 24:2)
3. What happened to the disciples when they were filled with the Holy Spirit? They began to speak in other tongues (Acts 2:14-21)
10. Does God show favoritism? No—The Holy Spirit isfor all
4. What was Moses’ reaction to the Holy Spirit coming upon the elders and in answer to Joshua’s request? He knew what was happening and wished all people would experience what they were experiencing. That all of us God’s people will be prophets. The prophethood of all believers THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE NEW TESTAMENTActs1:4-8
4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” 6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
11. How did the Jewish believers know that the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured upon the Gentiles? Heard them speaking in tongues and exalting and praising God Note Speaking in tongues is the Biblical pattern for those who are baptized in the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not tongues. Speaking in tongues is the initial physical signof being baptized in the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God. The Holy Spirit is a Person. This experience will provide you with a new power for Christian service. While there is only one baptism in the Holy Spirit, there are many fillings. (Ephesians 5:18-20)
Conclusion We should unceasingly seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit. We can simply go to God in prayer and ask Him to fill us with His Spirit as we surrender our lives to Him. God wants the best for each of His children and desires for us to be empowered by the Holy Spirit for service. God also desires that the fruit of the Spirit be evident in our lives. CHRISTIAN IN 2022: LIVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT (THE BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT)
24 So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the tent. 25 Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took some of the power of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied—but did not do so again.26 However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders but did not go out to the tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them, and they prophesied in the camp. 27 A young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”
1. What new baptism did Jesus refer to in Acts 1:5? Baptism in the Spirit
“All experiences convince me, not only that God is ever present: but also, that it is by contact with the Spirit of God that the spirit of man reaches its highest and its best” Right Honorable Lord Denning.
28 Joshua’ son of Nun, who had been Moses’ aide since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!”29 But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them! “—Numbers 11:24-29 (NIV) 1. What happened to the elders when the Holy Spirit came upon them? They prophesied 2. What does it mean to prophesy? 3. What do you think was Joshua’s concern?
8. How do we know that there was a visible sign of the Holy Spirit coming upon the Samaritans? Simon wanted to buy the ability so that when he laid hands on people, they would receive.
12. What are we commanded to be filled with?Filled with God’s Spirit
2. What do we receive when the Holy Spirit comes on us? Power to be His witnesses—to tell others about Him and His love (Acts 2:1-13)
7. Why did Peter and John pray for the new believers in Samaria? That they might receive the Holy Spirit. (Acts 8:14-25)
7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
4. Who does God promise to pour out His Spirit on in the last days? All people—it can be for every believer (Acts 2:37-39)
The Ghanaian News July 2022 45 FOOD FOR LIFE
6. Was the promise of the Holy Spirit only for that generation? No—for all generations to come (Acts 2:38-41)
9. Why did Peter say that Simon could have no part in the act of laying on of hands? His heart and attitude were not right (Acts 10:34-46)
13. When a person is drunk, they are said to be under the influence or control of alcohol. In contrast, what is the result of being filled with the Holy Spirit?Under God’s control and influence with a heart of gratitude (Galatians 5:16-25)

14. The fruit of the Spirit is the best evidence that we are walking in the Spirit. List the 9 fruits of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5:22- 23. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

“I would like to state, Mr. President, that the narrative that the Russians have used in dealing with the situation and suggests that sanctions the US has on Russia is the cause of food insecurity crisis and that could be far from the truth. We have no sanctions on Russian agricultural products, no sanctions on fertilizers, no sanctions on their wheat, and we have indicated that we are prepared to work with them and we support the Secretary General’s efforts to finding a way to get Ukrainian wheat and Ukrainian fertilizer and Russia fertilizer to the market initiative, that’s the Secretary General-led”
The United States’ Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda ThomasGreenfield, has lauded Ghana’s President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for his exemplary contribution to the peace and security in the West African Region, as well as Ghana’s role on the UN Security Council. In a meeting with President Akufo-Addo at Jubilee House, on Saturday, 6th August 2022, the US Ambassador to the United Nations expressed the gratitude of the United States of America to President Akufo-Addo for his sterling efforts in peace building. “I have come to express our gratitude to Ghana for your leadership here in the Region, but also for your leadership in the Security Council and the close collaboration that we have been able to forge with your permanent representative in the peace and security challenges that we face every day in the Security SheCouncil”also praised Ghana’s solid relationship with the United States over the years, stating that “Ghana has been a stalwart and steadfast partner to the United States, and we are very much appreciated the opportunity to work with you.” She also expressed the support of the US to President Akufo-Addo in tackling security related issues in West Africa as Chairman of “WeECOWAS.alsowant to express to you our strong support for your efforts in dealing with the situation here in the region as President of ECOWAS, the very tough, sometimes decisions that you have had to make to deal with situations in the region, particularly as it relates to Mali” On the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Linda Thomas-Greenfield had this to “Mrsay.President, on Ukraine, as you know and you’ve heard, the President, as well as the Secretary of State and myself are deeply concerned by the growing crisis caused by the war in Ukraine. We believe it’s a war of choice that was made by (President) Putin, his disproportionate actions in terms of attacks on civilian infrastructure and this war has had a very significant impact on the continent of Africa, including Ghana,” she said Touching on the food crisis on the continent in general and Ghana in particular, the US envoy said that “I had an opportunity to talk with farmers in Tamale today, and hear from them some of the challenges they’re facing in the agricultural sector. They are not able to access fertilizer and, of course, the high price of petrol has had a huge impact on them, and they are planting about 40% of what they planted in the past. We have responded to this crisis throughout the continent of Africa. We have had to continue to work with you to address the rising food insecurity challenge”
She also dismissed the narrative being pushed by Russia that the food crisis across the world is as a result of sanctions the US has placed on the European giant.

But keeping eyes forward at the same time can be a good idea. McLaughlin says if you’re nearing the five-year mark, it’s worth it to assess where you are, and look at what else may be out
These salary incentives are among the reasons many people in countries including the US and UK – especially young workers – are currently changing jobs instead of sticking with a single employer.
Beyond the opinions of hiring managers, staying put too long can also have adverse effects on workers, particularly regarding salary. For many employees, there are plenty of opportunities to gain bumps in pay while staying within a single organisation, as long as there’s a culture of upward mobility – people don’t necessarily have to change employers to see their pay progress at least somewhat. Yet staying in a job too long can potentially hurt earning potential, even if it doesn’t hamper jobtitle Regulargrowth.promotion within the same organisation can mean employees climb the job title ladder just as rapidly as someone who jumps from job to job, says McLaughlin. Yet even if they receive regular raises, staying put can mean less money. A 2022 US survey conducted by the payroll company ADP show people who switched jobs saw, on average, close to 2% more annual wage growth than their former colleagues who stuck around.
Daniela Roessler and her colleagues trained cameras on baby jumping spiders at night to find out. The footage showed patterns that looked a lot like sleep cycles: The spiders’ legs twitched and parts of their eyes flickered.
For instance, lots of movement within a single company can mitigate some of the negatives associated with staying put. “If you’re somewhere 15 years, but you’ve moved up levels every couple of years, that’s like changing jobs,” says McLaughlin. That makes a lot of time spent at the same company much more palatable, because it implies you’ve gotten lots of varied experience over those years, he says. On the other hand, he adds, “if you’ve been somewhere 15-plus years, and you’ve had one job title, that can be a worry, unless you’re at the very top of your game with nowhere else to climb”. If you’ve been somewhere 15-plus years, and you’ve had one job title, that can be a worry, unless you’re at the very top of your game with nowhere else to climb – Jamie McLaughlin A worker’s industry can make a difference, too. Some career paths do call for staying put for a decade or more to accrue necessary tenure for a new job title. “If you’re an accountant or a lawyer,” says McLaughlin, “I don’t think there’s as much negative connotation if you’ve been somewhere 10 or 15 years, moved up and made partner. In those professions, that’s pretty much the route you take.”
Do spiders sleep? Study suggests they may snooze like humans
want to make sure your role has evolved with your life; that’s really the benchmark,” he says. “And every five years or so you should be opening the door, just to see what your options might be. Just because you’re having conversations with people doesn’t mean you’re unhappy or you’re changing jobs. You’re just doing due diligence on your career.” BBC
It’s a question that keeps some scientists awake at night: Do spiders sleep?
Other animals, including some birds and mammals, have been shown to experience REM sleep. But creatures like the jumping spider haven’t gotten as much attention so it wasn’t known if they got the same kind of sleep, said Roessler, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Konstanz in Germany.
“If you found somewhere you love,” says McLaughlin, “and you’re comfortable there, you feel you’re looked after there, and you’re paid well and respected, you don’t need to move just for the sake of it.”
Tenure at a job is vital for appealing to future employers – that’s the prevailing narrative in the workforce, even though many workers frequently change jobs and have for years. Still, some employees worry about leaving a job before they’ve put in at least a year or even more, in fear that recruiters will admonish them for not sticking with a role, or even judge them as someone who can’t hold down a position. In ways, it makes sense that the stalwart ‘company man’ – someone who knuckles down at a single organisation for years, if not their entire career –remains on a pedestal. After all, they’re revered for staying power and focus, loyalty and commitment. These are all desirable qualities in a potential hire. But some experts say there actually can be such a thing as too much staying power. “There are a lot of positive connotations about longevity in a role, but there is a fair degree of negativity as well,” says Jamie McLaughlin, CEO of New York-based recruiting company Monday AlthoughTalent.there’s plenty to be said for having extended experience – and lots of benefits that can come from digging in your heels with one employer –spending too long in one role may work against people in some cases. Some recruiters feel there’s a ‘tipping point’ at which loyalty can potentially signal complacency. And even for those not applying for jobs, there may be other reasons to start looking around after a while. The tipping point There is plenty of truth to the idea that a long stay at a company is generally looked upon favourably. It’s an indication of expertise, says McLaughlin – a safe bet that someone who’s been successful in a position for a long time really knows their stuff –and of company loyalty. It also shows workers have figured out what they want out of a role, he adds. For some employers, however, there is a point at which staying in one place can start to reflect poorly on a worker. “Eight, nine, 10 years, that’s fantastic,” he says. “But 15, 17, 19 years... there’s a big difference there. I think there is a window where the balance kind of tips a little bit.” For instance, being in one position for that long can signal that professional development has stalled, or that workers have a smaller network. “If you’ve only been in one industry, in one business, it can make you a little bit one-dimensional,” says McLaughlin. “From a hiring manager’s perspective, I’d question how diverse is their learning and development style? Are they willing to take risks or are they risk averse? Are they dynamic enough? You might look at that and go, how motivated is this person? Why haven’t they wanted to move?”
That stands in stark contrast to, say, creative professions, where he argues moving around is often the best way to further skills and open career options. “When you move from one agency or team to another, your network changes, your client base changes, your boss changes, your learning and development changes. You’re exposed to new challenges, new people, new Plus, ideas.” says Kropf, the world is constantly changing – and employees must keep up with new technology to stay competitive. Workers whose jobs evolve and offer them new skills don’t can get left behind. The compensation factor
The researchers described this pattern as a “REM sleep-like state.” In humans, REM, or rapid eye movement, is an active phase of sleep when parts of the brain light up with activity and is closely linked with dreaming.
The research showed the spiders’ overnight movements looked a lot like REM in other species, she said - like dogs or cats twitching in their sleep. And they happened in regular cycles, similar to sleep patterns in humans.
Claudia B Kropf, vice president of human resources at the USbased National Automobile Dealers Association, and founder of HR consultancy Monday’s Row, agrees lengthy tenure can make hiring managers wonder if a worker lacks ambition. She believes “the biggest drawback of remaining in a position too long, is getting comfortable with the status quo”, which could make a prospective employer worry someone might be too entrenched in one company’s culture to quicky adapt to “Someone’sanother. been somewhere 15, 20 years, and you have to wonder, are they institutionalised?” says McLaughlin. “Are they just part of the furniture? How adaptable can they really be?” These questions, combined with existing biases about the inadaptability of older workers, has the potential to be Ofdamaging.course, notes Kropf, these judgements are entirely subjective – there’s no universal answer to how all hiring managers will judge longtenured employees. “One person may see loyalty in 15-plus years of service,” she says, “whereas another may see apathy.” It may be up to the applicant, then, to paint that long tenure as a strength, rather than a weakness. Exceptions to the rule Although there may be red flags around longevity, there are also nuances buried within the number of years on a CV.
Many species similar to spiders actually don’t have movable eyes, which makes it hard to compare their sleep cycles, explained study co-author Paul Shamble, an evolutionary biologist at Harvard University. But these jumping spiders are predators that move their retinas around to change their gaze while they hunt, Shamble said. Plus, the young spiders have a see-through outer layer that gives a clear window into their bodies. “Sometimes as a biologist, you just get really, really lucky,” Shamble said. The researchers still have to figure out if the spiders are technically sleeping while they’re in these resting states, Roessler said. That includes testing whether they respond more slowly - or not at all - to triggers that would normally set them off. Critters like the jumping spider are very far from humans on the evolutionary tree. Jerry Siegel, a sleep researcher who was not involved with the study, said he’s doubtful that the spiders can really experience REM sleep. “There may be animals that have activity in quiet states,” said Siegel, of the UCLA Center for Sleep Research. “But are they REM sleep? It’s hard to imagine that they could be the same Butthing.”Barrett Klein, an entomologist at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse who was also not involved with the study, said it was exciting to find REMlike signs in such a distant relative. Many questions remain about how widespread REM sleep is and what purpose it might serve for species, he REMsaid. sleep is “still very much a black box,” Klein said. The Associated Press
“Youthere.
Some workers stay put at a single company for several years – even decades. Is this a signal of loyalty or laziness?
Can you stay in a job for too long?
50 The Ghanaian News July 2022
This is especially the case amid the current tight labour market, as employers are offer big incentives to bring talent into their organisations. A 2022 survey of more than 2,600 workers in the US by research organisation The Conference Board showed 20% of people who changed jobs during the pandemic saw a 10% to 20% pay increase, and nearly a third of those surveyed got an even bigger bump – over 30% more than they previously made. The pattern is similar in the UK, where job switchers also reaped wage benefits
Their findings were published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Roessler and her team dug into the sleep question after she discovered the spiders hanging at night from threads of silk in their lab containers. She had recently scooped up some jumping spiders to study, a common species with a furry brown body and four pairs of big eyes. “It was just the most unusual thing I’ve ever seen,” Roessler said of the suspended spiders.
To stay or to go? Even with all this in mind, however, workers shouldn’t necessarily go running from their long-standing jobs. While there are valid considerations as to whether sticking it out in a position is the best idea, it’s also important that employees are happy.
Most people who are diagnosed with high blood pressure will eventually require medication to control it in order to avoid complications such as heart attack or stroke. However not everybody needs a drug prescription right away and many people can lower their blood pressure by making some lifestyle changes. In this article we will discuss 10 lifestyle changes, that can lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of heartLifestyledisease.plays an important role in treating your high blood pressure. If you successfully control your blood pressure with a healthy lifestyle, you may avoid, delay or reduce the need for medication. Here are 10 lifestyle changes you can make to lower your blood pressure and keep it down.
8. Reduce your stress Stress or anxiety can temporarily increase blood pressure. Take some time to think about what causes you to feel stressed, such as work, family, finances or illness. Once you know what’s causing your stress, consider how you can eliminate or reduce stress. If you can’t eliminate all of your stressors, you can at least cope with them in a healthier way. Take breaks for deep-breathing exercises. Get a massage or take up yoga or meditation. If self-help doesn’t work, seek out a professional for counseling.
If you drink more than moderate amounts of it, alcohol can actually raise blood pressure by several points. It can also reduce the effectiveness of high blood pressure medications. Consider tapering off. If you’re a heavy drinker, suddenly eliminating all alcohol can actually trigger severe high blood pressure for several days. So when you stop drinking, do it with the supervision of your doctor or taper off slowly, over one to two weeks.
The role caffeine plays in blood pressure is still debatable. Drinking caffeinated beverages can temporarily cause a spike in your blood pressure, but it’s unclear whether the effect is temporary or long lasting. To see if caffeine raises your blood pressure, check your pressure within 30 minutes of drinking a cup of coffee or another caffeinated beverage you regularly drink. If your blood pressure increases by five to 10 points, you may be sensitive to the blood pressure raising effects of Regardlesscaffeine.ofyour sensitivity to caffeine’s effects, doctors recommend you drink no more than 200 milligrams a day — about the amount in two cups of coffee.

2. Exercise regularly Regular physical activity — at least 30 to 60 minutes most days of the week — can lower your blood pressure by 4 to 9 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). And it doesn’t take long to see a difference. If you haven’t been active, increasing your exercise level can lower your blood pressure within just a few Ifweeks.you have prehypertension (systolic pressure between 120 and 139 or diastolic pressure between 80 and 89), exercise can help you avoid developing fullblown hypertension. 4. Reduce sodium in your diet
Don’t add salt. Just 1 level teaspoon of salt has 2,300 mg of sodium. Use herbs or spices, rather than salt, to add more flavor to your foods. Ease into it. If you don’t feel like you can drastically reduce the sodium in your diet suddenly, cut back gradually. Your palate will adjust over time.
Read food labels. If possible, choose low-sodium alternatives of the foods and beverages you normally buy. Eat fewer processed foods. Potato chips, frozen dinners, bacon and processed lunch meats are high in sodium.
Asian men are at risk if their waist measurement is greater than 36 inches (90 cm). Asian women are at risk if their waist measurement is greater than 32 inches (80 cm).
Even a small reduction in the sodium in your diet can reduce blood pressure by 2 to 8 mm Hg. Most healthy adults need only between 1,500 and 2,400 milligrams (mg) of sodium a day. But if you have high blood pressure, aim for less than 1,500 mg of sodium a day.
5. Limit the amount of alcohol you drink Alcohol can be both good and bad for your health. In small amounts, it can potentially lower your blood pressure by 2 to 4 mm Hg. But that protective effect is lost if you drink too much alcohol — generally more than one drink a day for women and more than two a day for men. Also, if you don’t normally drink alcohol, you shouldn’t start drinking as a way to lower your blood pressure. There’s more potential harm than benefit to drinking alcohol.

6. Avoid tobacco products and secondhand Onsmoketop of all the other dangers of smoking, the nicotine in tobacco products can raise your blood pressure by 10 mm Hg or more for up to an hour after you smoke. Smoking throughout the day means your blood pressure may remain constantly high. You should also avoid secondhand smoke. This eating plan is known as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet. It isn’t easy to change your eating habits, but with these tips, you can adopt a healthy diet: Be a smart shopper. Make a shopping list before heading to the supermarket to avoid picking up junk food. Read food labels when you shop, and stick to your healthy-eating plan when you’re dining out, too. Cut yourself some slack. Although the DASH diet is a lifelong eating guide, it doesn’t mean you have to cut out all of the foods you love. It’s OK to treat yourself occasionally to foods you wouldn’t find on a DASH diet menu, like a candy bar or mashed potatoes with gravy.
Women are at risk if their waist measurement is greater than 35 inches (88 cm).

Get support from family and friends
Supportive family and friends can help improve your health. They may encourage you to take care of yourself, drive you to the doctor’s office or embark on an exercise program with you to keep your blood pressure low. Talk to your family and friends about the dangers of high blood pressure.
If you find you need support beyond your family and friends, consider joining a support group. This may put you in touch with people who can give you an emotional or morale boost and who can offer practical tips to cope with your condition.
