President AkufoAddo Launches 2019 PANAFEST and Year of Return in Cape Coast, Ghana From:Prof. Michael Baffoe & Jonathan Annobil, Cape Coast President Nana AddoDankwaAkufoAddo on Saturday July 27th, 2019 launched the 2019 edition of the Pan-African Festival (PANAFEST) and the Emancipation celebrations at a colourful ceremony at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

This year’s celebration, also coincided with the declaration of the “Year of Return”. The events and the year-long celebrations are under the Theme: “Beyond 400 Years: Reaching Across Continents into the Future”.

The PANAFEST, launched since 1992, is a special celebration dedicated to Africans and people of African descent. It is rooted in the ideals of Pan-Africanism and the development of the

African continent. The focus is to promote understanding, peace and unity among all African peoples, peoples of African descent and Africans in the diaspora. The EMANCIPATION ceremonies commemorates the significant day of August 1st, 1834 when the slave trade and slavery were formally abolished in most parts of the then British Empire.

The launch of the events in Cape Coast were marked with great pomp and pageantry.

The Ghanaian Presbyterian Church of Toronto has marked its 25 years anniversary with a commitment to continue to live up to its mandate as a true Bible-believing and practicing church. According to the church, it would continue to uphold the Centrality of the Word of God and through the enablement of the Holy Spirit, pursue a holistic ministry, so as to bring all of creation to glorify God. The Ghanaian Presbyterian Church in Toronto was started by a small group of visionary men and women in a basement apartment but today, it has a

More Presidential & Government Promises on Critical Diasporan Issues and Concerns: Any Road Map for actual Implementation?

In our last Month’s Editorial piece, we raised concerns over the promise made by President Nana AkufoAddo to Ghanaian Diasporans, at the Second NPP-government supported Homecoming Summit in July 2017 on the elusive implementation of the Representation of the People Amendment Act (ROPAA). This Legislation, passed in February 2006, is supposed to give Ghanaians living abroad the right to vote in Presidential elections in the Land of Our Birth. We raised concerns on the irony that it was an NPP government that passed the Legislation which has sat on the shelves for thirteen years without implementation. We also raised further concerns that it is another NPP government that promised in 2017 to implement this Legislation within its four-year mandate ending in December 2020.

In that Editorial piece, we stressed on the massive and meaningful contributions that Ghanaians living abroad have made to the development of the “Land of Our Birth” which cannot be over-emphasized.

The signs are everywhere. It doesnot take a rocket scientist to unearth the meaningful contributions Ghanaian Diasporans have made to develop, sustain, stabilize their original homeland, and in the process continue to project her image abroad. This point has been underscored over and over again by successive NPP governments.

PresidentKufour underscored this in his Welcome address to the 2001 Homecoming Summit. President AkufoAddo did the same at second Homecoming Summit in 2017, recognizing the positive and massive contributions that Ghanaians living abroad continue to make to the Ghanaian economy and to the country’s development.

Two years have passed since President AkufoAddo made the promise, “on his honour” to ensurethat Ghanaian Diasporans vote in the next elections in 2020 during his tenure. Nothing has happened on that front. The only moves have been some meaningless “consultation with stakeholders’ by the Electoral Commission in Ghana on this issue. The discussions, ironically and sadly, have not included Ghanaian Diasporans who gathered in Accra from July 3rd to July 6th, 2019, for another, and third Homecoming Summit of Ghanaians in the Diaspora.

As expected, President AkufoAddo was on hand to show his support for the event, along with his top officials, again as usual, at the opening ceremonies to make more promises on this issue. This time around, he added what some of the Diasporans gathered at the Summit suspect is an escape hatch if he and his government do not implement his promise to get Ghanaians in Diaspora to vote in the next elections. He enumerated some “problems” that are “likely” to rise in the course of the registrations of Ghanaians in the Diaspora. He expressed the worry about the registration of Ghanaians living in neighboring countries who may be “infiltrated by other nationals”, fearing that that possibility may compromise the integrity of the process. Smart move?

Well, the President went on to make yet another promise: that his government will soon introduce Legislation to Parliament which should allowGhanaian dual citizens to hold positions in the public service and in government. This move will necessitate an amendment to some provisions in the 1992 Constitutions which bars Ghanaian dual citizens from holding public office in Ghana. Ha! Another major Promise!!! Does the President and his government have any plans for implementing yet another major promise to Ghanaian Diasporans when all previous ones have yet to see the light of day?

This second major “promise” is easy to fulfil if the President and his government have the political will and good intentions since they can easily pass the intended Legislation in Parliament with their numerical superiority. We “wait to see” what will become of these two major promises and Presidential initiatives: Implementation of ROPPA and Legislation to enable Ghanaians in the Diaspora to hold public office in Ghana.

The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Patricia Pelosi has ended a fourday historic visit to Ghana with an address to the Parliament of Ghana on Wednesday July 31st, 2019. She was in the country with representatives of the US Congressional Black Caucus who were in Ghana as part of the Diasporan Year of Return visits to Ghana.

Speaker Pelosi said that she expects Ghana, the first African country south of the Sahara with “Freedom and Justice” as her motto, to lead the global crusade of ensuring justice for all manner of persons and in all spheres of life. She traced the beginnings of the socio-economic and cultural relations between Ghana and the United States pointing out that Ghana played a pivotal role in America’s civil rights movement, standing as the spiritual symbol and a source of great hope and inspiration in the fight against discrimination and segregation.

Speaker NancyPerosi underscored the fact that the United States remains committed to the economic progress of Ghana citing the Millennium Challenge partnership and in the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).“ Our friendship endures because of our security cooperation designed to keep

the world safe. It endures because of our history, as we mark the “Year of Return” and it will endure because of our future”, she said to applause by the MPs and from the public gallery.

Speaker Perosi and the Congressional Black Caucus delegation accompanying her had early on Tuesday July 30th, 2019 visited the Cape Coast and Elmina Castles where they were greatly impacted by their experiences.

These were the places from where the ancestors of African Americans were first kept and then shipped into slavery in the United States some 400 years ago.

Alluding to these emotional experiences in her address to Parliament, Speaker Perosi said, “At Elmina Castle, we saw the dungeons in which thousands were entrapped,and at the Cape Coast Castle, we stood before the “Door of No Return” where countless millions caught their last glimpse of Africa before being shipped to a life of enslavement”, she said with a trembling voice and a lot of heavy emotions.

The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye thanked Speaker Pelosi and her delegation for their historic visit and for forging greater relationship between the Parliament of Ghana and the United States Congress.

Mr. Akufo-Addo indicated that he is of the firm view that such a collaboration “will be a healthier and more productive relationship that will be developed between the two countries”.

The President having noted that the democratic congresswoman at the Centre of controversy in the United States with President Trump over his “go back” suggestion, Representative IIhan Omar, of Minnesota, was part of the Speakers delegation, said he has been following with keen interest the controversy involving the congresswoman.

Petition to fine Amber Alert complainers who call 911 reaches nearly 100K

Complaints common after alerts

The petition picked up steam on Thursday after an Amber Alert was sent out in the middle of the night to help locate a twoyear-old girl who had allegedly been abducted by her father. Police eventually found the girl and arrested her father along with three others.

Despite the alert helping to safely locate the child, the complaints still poured in, according to a Brantford police news release.

“The Brantford Police Service has been inundated by numerous phone calls to our Communications Section, 9-1-1, and to our public email account. One person has called and complained 11 times; this is being investigated,” the force said in a statement Thursday. “[We] would like to remind the public that contacting the police service to complain takes resources away from legitimate police investigations. The alert was for 11-year-old Riya Rajkumar, who was found dead a few hours later. The alert helped police find her dad, who had allegedly abducted and killed her.

The girl’s father Roopesh Rajkumar was charged in her death, but later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In the petition, Monacelli wrote that the girl’s death impacted her deeply.

Many complainants also said the alerts were unnecessary because they couldn’t do anything to help or were located too far from where the child was last seen.

“These people went on living their lives which were disrupted for all of two minutes, while the little girl was no more.”

Monacelli said she started the petition because the 911 line is meant for emergencies — other police matters should be directed to a station’s number.

She said it’s why she proposed fining people tying up the emergency line to complain — keeping dispatchers from helping people in urgent situations.

In May, an Amber Alert for a missing boy in Greater Sudbury, Ont. also spurred a series of complaints to police, leading authorities to issue a statement reminding the public that 911 is for emergencies only.

“People have to understand that when they dial 911, they are taking time and personnel away from actual emergencies and that these actions could COST LIVES!” Monacelli wrote in the petition, which was launched two weeks ago.

But the woman who spotted the missing boy and his mother, who had abducted him in May, disagrees with complainers.

People who had signed the petition seem to agree.

“If it was your child you would want the world to stop,” one petitioner commented. “I cannot believe people are so self-involved.”

It sounds like province may take action.

“When a child is missing, we all have a role to play as members of our community. Many children have been located as a direct result of Amber Alerts – but it only works if everyone receives these alerts. The bottom line is simple: a missing child is an emergency,” Ontario Solicitor General Sylvia Jones said on Monday.

“We are considering all options to ensure people are not wasting critical emergency resources.”

Monacelli, who is the mom of a 3-yearold, told the Canadian Press: “If people can be really that selfish to call to complain about a service that saves children’s lives, and also to occupy the 911 line for this kind of thing, then they do deserve to be fined.”

“If anything like that were ever to happen to my son, knock on wood, I want the whole world to move and do whatever they can to find him.”

People who do want to make serious complaints or suggest improvements to the emergency alert system should contact the CRTC, not police.

Bank of Canada keeps key interest rate target on hold at 1.75 per cent The Bank of Canada is leaving its key interest rate unchanged in an announcement that balances domestic economic improvements with an expanding global slowdown caused by trade conflicts.

Quebec To Invest $70 Million Towards Helping Immigrants Learn French Classes are free and immigrants get paid to take them

By Giuseppe Valiante MONTREAL — Quebec announced tens of millions of new dollars Friday aimed at getting more newcomers to learn French.

One of the Coalition Avenir Quebec’s main pitches to get elected last fall was to temporarily reduce immigration and ensure the newcomers who are accepted can integrate by learning the province’s only official language.

Not only are French classes free for immigrants in Quebec, but the state pays them to take the courses. It also subsidizes daycare costs for immigrant parents who study French.

Immigration Minister Simon JolinBarrette told reporters Friday he’s sweetening the pot to gently push more newcomers to register for courses.

His department will spend an extra $70 million a year, he said, to create 300 new classes, hire 80 more teachers, and increase the weekly stipend for people who take full-time courses from $141 to $185.

Immigrants who take part-time French will now receive $15 a day, up from nothing.

“Your government is showing beyond any doubt its determination and its desire to reform the immigration system,” Jolin-Barrette said during a news conference. “The government of Quebec is very serious in its approach ... the knowledge of French by immigrants ensures the success of all of society.”

Bill 9 Absent in the minister’s announcement was the other, less generous component of the government’s immigration strategy. The Coalition also ran last fall on a promise to refuse residency certificates to those who fail a Frenchlanguage test within three years of arriving.

Obtaining that document, known as the Certificat de selection du Quebec, is essential to receiving permanent residency status by the federal government.

Quebec adopted Bill 9 before the summer recess, creating a legal framework allowing the province to be more restrictive regarding who gets to come to Quebec and who gets to stay. Bill 9 didn’t include specific regulations about the promised French-language tests and the government has yet to announce them.

Subsidized classes Jolin-Barrette said state-subsidized French classes will now be accessible to all immigrants, regardless of how long they have been in the province.

Before Friday’s announcement, newcomers weren’t eligible for free classes after five years.

The classes will now be offered to temporary foreign workers and foreign students — as well as their spouses. Daycare subsidies for parttime French students will increase from $7 to $9 per day, per child. The money given to parents taking fulltime courses remains the same, at $25 per day per child.

Jolin-Barrette estimated about 4,500 more immigrants a year will take advantage of the free classes.

Anait Aleksanian, executive director of an immigrant resource centre in Montreal offering French-language classes, said she is “rejoicing” at Friday’s news.

“They have put in place all the conditions for immigrants to learn French,” she said in an interview.

Kitchener RCMP say men, women charged with total of 40 offences following drug raids in southern Ontario Two Sunwing employees accused of importing cocaine through Toronto’s Pearson airport are among 11 people facing dozens of drugtrafficking charges after an undercover operation led by Kitchener RCMP and involving law enforcement in other parts of southern Ontario.

The investigation involved undercover officers from the RCMP’s Kitchener office purchasing approximately nine kilograms of fentanyl as well as several kilograms of other drugs over the course of several transactions.

“These drugs could have been diluted significantly, meaning a much higher drug volume would have been distributed to the streets,” police said in a release.

In a statement emailed to CBC News on Friday, Sunwing said the company “offered our full co-operation to the RCMP to ensure that this matter was brought to a successful conclusion.”

FOCUS Meaningful Community Involvement in the School Experience

By Joe Kingsley Eyiah, OCT, Brookview Middle School, Toronto-Canada It is sad to note that an unprecedented number of young immigrants including Ghanaians who should be in school are languishing in jail in Canada, especially in the city of Toronto where we have a large immigrant population. I should think the story is no different around the globe wherever Ghanaians find themselves in large numbers. How unfortunate!

Some Ghanaian youth both in Ghana and elsewhere have dropped out of school and have adopted street life full of crimes such as doing drugs, shoplifting, fraud, prostitution and in some extreme cases armed robbery. Reasons for their ‘un-Ghanaian cultural way of life’ are mostly attributed to acculturalization, dysfunctional families and apathy on the part of the community.

The school experience to such Ghanaian youth-atrisk is a non-starter! This frightening trend of event paints a gloomy picture for our community in and around the world, especially in TorontoCanada where the Ghanaian population is growing astronomically.

We need to act NOW as a concerned community or risk losing some future leaders of our community to waywardness.

As a teacher and social commentator, I personally see meaningful community involvement as an important part of the school experience. I therefore discuss briefly in this discourse how our community in Toronto and elsewhere can actively get involved with the school experience in order to save our youth from dropping out of school any further.

Bob Glossop has described this situation as ‘socially toxic environment.’ It is adversely affecting student achievement!

Good News: I am personally encouraged by the efforts of the new Executives of the Ghanaian Canadian Association of Ontario (GCAO) based in Toronto in planning programs to cater for the young population of the community. Notable among such programs is the GCAO Homework and Mentoring Club run every Sunday in Toronto.

This year, the GCAO partnered with the Modern Batik Couture to win grants from the Toronto Arts Council to organize workshop for Ghanaian youth in the Toronto Metropolitan Area this July. Such efforts are geared towards improving the school experience

Councils Ontario:

On April 12,1995, the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training (OMET) issued its Policy/program Memorandum No.122 requiring all school boards in the province to have in place policies regarding the formation of school councils by June 1996. Theoretically, the essential function of school councils is to give voice to parents and members of the community by removing some of the major aspect of the administration for an individual school from the purview of a central board of education.

The Ontario initiative was the result of the recommendation of the Ontario Royal Commission on Learning (1995) and the Ontario Parent Council (1995) that school councils be established to enable parents and students to assume a more responsible and active role in education programs and services within their local community (OMET, 1995,p.l).

Perhaps, the school council’s participatory role in academic development of the school was limited or even eliminated from its mandate by the OMET precluding the council from having specific influence in the policy area of curriculum.

This notwithstanding, the councils have tremendous advisory role to the play in the life of the school.

I liken the school councils in OntarioCanada to Parent/Teacher Associations(PTAs) in Ghana and elsewhere.

And ask the following questions: How do we as parents take opportunity in the School Council to get involve with the education of our

children? Is there any public willingness, especially among the Ghanaian community, to serve on these councils/ PTAs? Are parents motivated enough to sit on school councils/ PTAs? Let’s try to explore some answers to these questions in the following paragraphs.

Willingness to Serve: Research has indicated that there is no sufficient motivation for parents who are, for the most part, motivated solely by their narrow concern with educational opportunities for their children to get involve with the school councils (see Golench, 1997).

Though the government?s initiative, to me, provides activity and empowerment, many parents have seen school councils as nonstarter. Such parents find themselves either too busy with daily

life or have no interest to volunteer on the school councils. There should be therefore appropriate motivation for enthusiastic voluntary participation from parents.

The public willingness must be whipped up and sustained among parents through encouraging parents? involvement in school programs. The potential for assistance and knowledge that lies in the community beyond the school?s parents is a significant untapped resource.

School Councils should not be seen as or make to look elitist.

In Ghana, most PTAs are unfortunately dominated by few parents who remain as chairpersons and condone with headteachers/ headmasters/principals to treat the associations as their own bonafide properties.

I would therefore encourage parents (especially Ghanaians) to take opportunity of school councils and teacher/parent conferences to influence the school life for their children and the community at large. Those who can should volunteer to serve as community representatives on these councils.

The numerous local Ghanaian Churches and Cultural Associations as well as Umbrella Organizations of Ghanaian Organizations in Diaspora (in and around the world, especially in Toronto) must vigorously seek avenues to encourage their memberships to get involved with school experience wherever they are!

AFCON 2019: Outrageous, unconvincing expenditure!

By Edmund Agbeko, Toronto Just as colleague Journalist & Sports Enthusiast Jerome Otchere pens his thoughts, if the Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon Isaac Asiamah sought to impress us with his presentation of the AFCON 2019 budget and particularly how much was spent out of the budgeted amount, then he failed. He failed not because I have any evidence of malfeasance against him, but simply because his presentation left too many questions unanswered.

Before the tournament, some media reports claimed that between US$8million and US$15million was budgeted for the competition but the Minister said during his presentation at Parliament on July 24 that, US$6.3 million was budgeted but US$4,564,532 was spent. To be fair, the clarity there should be commended as it offers a measure of transparency but then, it is hard to swallow the entire expenditure as it painfully chokes at the throat.

I cannot take the Minister’s presentation without questions. A breakdown by Hon. Asiamah shows that US$965,405 was paid to the players as winning bonuses. The technical team had US$347,027 with additional technical staff taking home

It is problematic too. I have found no correct justification for the grossly, reckless expenditure on the team in recent years. Senior colleague, Michael Oti Adjei, captured it succinctly when he wrote that: “After Brazil 2014, we had a fine opportunity to de-emphasize a bonus culture that has never helped us. Then someone had an Einstein kind of

It is hard to understand but the point is that we have had leaders who either do not care or are ignorant and insensitive. If we had leaders who cared and were sensitive to the plight of the ordinary Ghanaian, leaders who had priorities, leaders who knew the true state of football and sports in Ghana; there will be no way they would carelessly pump millions of US dollars into the Black Stars and also have the moral courage to defend it.

The AFCON 2019 expenditure failed to convince me, that, our leaders know what they are doing with the Black Stars and our football in general. It was another cruel dissipation of taxpayers money. And I dare predict, that, any breakdown of those fat figures given to us by Hon. Asiamah will only confirm our failure to learn as a country.

In any case, why are we behaving as if the world would come to an end if we don’t win the AFCON. As I stated in my previous articles, I believe what we need now is a systematic development of Ghana football from the grassroots to the top over a period of time. If we get the foundation right,

the required results will follow naturally. For now, we don’t even have many players who are playing at the top level in Europe, yet we want to win the AFCON. If Ghanaians will be sincere to themselves, they will readily admit that the quality of our players cannot be compared with the Algerians who won the tournament, for instance.

If I may ask, which of our players can match up to the quality of the former African best player, Riyad Mahrez, who was the talisman of the Desert Warriors throughout the tournament?

If Ghana can’t boast of any such inspirational player who can carry the team on his shoulders when it matters most, how do we expect to win the AFCON? And most importantly, Mahrez enjoyed the support of a committed bunch of players whose motivation was to die for their country other than money. After winning the trophy, they now have every right to enjoy the megabucks associated with such achievements.

Once the huge demands made by the Stars players were met by the President of the land, it is only appropriate for them to take a chunk of the blame for failing to fulfil their part of the bargain. Simple - the senior national team is not a place for players to learn the rudiments

This is, however, not to say that the Stars coach was perfect during the tournament. No human being under the sun is.

I thought some of his substitutions came a bit late. I also noticed that he could have started an out-and-out striker like Asamoah Gyan as the arrowhead, with Jordan Ayew as the supporting striker. This is just a layman’s opinion though.

Again, I thought the timing of the coach’s decision to change his captain at the eleventh hour was wrong and accordingly reacted to it publicly, knowing the effect it could have on the team. At the end of the day, the chicken came home to roost. Take it or leave it, that appointment took something out of the team’s campaign.

Having suffered the same fate before in 1992, I expected Coach Appiah to know better since that unpopular decision to replace Kwasi Appiah with Abedi Pele days to the Senegal ‘92 AFCON haunted the Black Stars for over a decade before Stephen Appiah’s generation finally broke the jinx with the Germany 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification for the first time.

Akufo-Addo that money could win the AFCON for Ghana should be made to carry the can, as well as the Black Stars Management Committee who failed to manage the players effectively off the pitch.

As I conclude, let me state that I’m not surprised the least surprised about the fallout of the AFCON expenditure which was presented to Parliament by the Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah. Mark my words: nothing positive will come out of the raging AFCON budget brouhaha since this is not the first time this is happening in this country in recent times.

It happens in every major tournament. Politicians are all the same! As I keep saying, we should start thinking about investing those huge sums into developing young talents for the future and stop the wild goose chase for an AFCON title which does not seem to be in sight. The way forward to end this extravagant spending on the Black Stars is to pursue a comprehensive youth development plan.

Let’s use the huge sums of money we are spending on the senior national team to build infrastructure and groom young talents right from the basic schools.

Thankfully, God has blessed us with immense football talents nationwide to tap from to better out lot.

He’s simply an artistic individual who’s creative, intuitive, adventurous, ambitious, sensitive, articulate, and expressive. He’s ability to use his vision and direction to guide the actors in bringing the script idea to life was visionary. As the creative brain behind the movie production, he read through scripts, held auditions, and helped select cast members for the movie.

For starters, many thanks for agreeing to have this interview with me. Aside being a true bookworm, can you in a quick line tell our readers who Abba Hammond is?

You had to shoot a couple of scenes of the movie in Ghana… how was the whole experience?

Nostalgic! Ghana is so beautiful with unique landscapes, tropical beaches that rival some of the world’s best, ancient history, geographical wonders and with good people with a good sense of humour. Prior to the visit, the last time that I had been in Ghana was when I was at age 15/16; almost 10 years ago! The country has been touched by cultures from around the world, and it was truly a wholesome experience! Honestly, it felt amazing to go back.

Thank you also for giving me the opportunity to reach out to your audience. Abba Hammond is a friendly, bubbly, open minded, science-loving, cupcake connoisseur and a gym freak I guess. [Laughs]

During shooting of ‘Bride From Africa’, did you have one wonderful or humorous memory from the set that you can share with our readers?

What lured you to be part of ‘Bride From Africa’?

Well well well, it was my mother who actually introduced me to the director and that was the beginning of the love story. As you might not be aware, Lucy Crentsil, who is my mum in real life, is also my mum character-wise in the movie too.

Honestly, what thrilled me to be a part of the cast was the background story on the reasons Director Avenger Danquah wrote the script. Love transcending all things was essentially something I could relate to in many ways. Being Canadian-born but raised by African parents who have strong admiration for African traditions and cultures, it was a mêlée of western civilisation and African traditions. Every culture has its own unique stamp of identity which is characterized by traditions, values and norms that make it distinctive.

Of course! I remember when shooting a living room scene, character Mama Ogechi [ Lucy Crentsil ] told character Uncle Kweku [Michael Appiah-Kubi] that she will ‘bite him’. And when the director called for a break during the shooting of that scene, we were all crying of laughter because it was hilariously an extreme brilliance of natural acting; honestly, we did not see that coming!

Genuinely, characters Mama Ogechi, Uncle Kweku and Otibo [ just to mention a few ] will have everyone entertained!

What sort of acting roles will you be seeking in the future? Will you be more into action, adventure, comedy, crime, drama, fantasy et al or you have selected genres you have special interest in.

I believe that, for every role that I play, I should be able to do my best to have the right message sent across to the viewers. I am open to experiencing all types of genres but I guess I will be looking forward to more romance and action movies.

Tell me about the difficulty with your character; ‘Princess Araba’ and how do you define your acting style?

If you weren’t acting, what would you be doing? Fitness helps me think better, feel better, and move better…. probably playing Professional Soccer! [Laughs]

Through no fault of her own, Princess Araba was a victim of the influence of western culture on African culture. Personally, I do identify myself as an alpha female; very independent, strong willed and a fighter. My acting prowess can be likened to that of German-born American actress and teacher, Uta Thyra Hagen.

For me, good actors are those who can express their emotions through their eyes and most importantly, making their audiences believe in their character.

What are your short and long term goals and where do you see yourself in five years?

‘Bride From Africa’ is your debut movie but in which areas would you like to improve as an actress…

Acting is a skill and like most skills, it’s helped by natural talent, but that’s not enough. I have to develop my acting skills and become the confident, captivating actor that I always dream off. Improving one’s ability as an actor is a long process that essentially happens over the course of your life. To be a good actor, you should always be taking measures to bettering your skill and craft. Luckily, there are many ways in which an actor can improve and grow; by taking classes, studying, auditioning and performing relentlessly. For example, voice training because, you will want your voice to be flexible enough to

I believe setting goals are the first steps in turning the invisible into the visible as education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. My personal goals are to be happy, healthy and to be surrounded by loved ones. At the moment, graduating from University and preparing for my Masters are my immediate goals but with future projections, I want to see myself staring in 3 or more movies.

Do you follow the African movie industry and if you do, any interest in getting involved with Nollywood or Ghallywood or you looking more into high profile Hollywood movies?

Of course I do follow [African movies] because movies from Africa are the way a lot of the black diaspora understand their history - African movies are simply Africans telling their stories. I would love to break into the Ghallywood industry and as one of Ghanaian heritage; it will also be a huge dream just as it would to be in Hollywood movies.

Your views on Feminism and Pay equality… Gender equality is not a ‘women’s issue’ – it’s good for men too because there are plenty of proud male feminists, but to make equality a reality we need to draw more into the conversation.

Personally, I am for equal rights, and equal pay, equality for the sexes.

Who is your role model in the acting industry and in your own words, what are the tips to become a successful actor?

I love Uta Thyra Hagen , Angela Bassett, Kerry Washington, Gabriel Union, Meghan Good, Oprah Winfrey, Angelina Jolie, there are quite a few too. Almost all of the famous celebrities and actors you know today by name made it to the top by sheer hard work and of course, a lot of career planning too. It is very important to approach you acting career in a planned manner.

Are you looking forward to any upcoming movies? What film do you want to watch these days?

I am looking forward to watching The Lion King! It was one of my favourite Disney Movies growing up.

Abba, thanks again for the interviewing opportunities but finally, what is one message you would give to your fans….

Firstly, I do want to say thank you so much for supporting the movie because no act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. I’m very thankful to all my fans for their constant love and support. I am what I am because of their unconditional love. Feds criticize Ontario for eliminating out-of-country health insurance Eliminating out-ofcountry health insurance could jeopardize access to necessary medical care and become a hardship for some travellers, the federal health minister warned Wednesday in a letter to her Ontario counterpart.

Ginette Petitpas Taylor said the move announced by Premier Doug Ford’s Progressive C o n s e r v a t i v e government will hurt people who travel regularly to the United States.

“If all publicly financed reimbursement of outof-country physician and hospital services is eliminated, private health insurance premiums for

travellers will inevitably rise for all Ontario residents,” Petitpas Taylor said in her letter to Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott. “Even modest increases could pose a hardship for some individuals.”

The program currently covers out-of-country inpatient services up to $400 per day for a higher level of care, such as intensive care, as well up to $50 per day for emergency outpatient and doctor services.

In May, Elliott announced the decision to scrap the program following a sixday public consultation, saying it is very costly and does not provide value to taxpayers.

The change is expected to come into effect Oct. 1.

A spokesman for Elliott confirmed Wednesday that the government intends to wind down the program and strongly

encourage people to purchase travel health insurance.

“The program’s coverage is very limited with only five cents of every dollar claimed,” Travis Kann said in a statement. “With this limited coverage and low reimbursement rate, OHIP-eligible Ontarians who do not purchase private travel health insurance can be left with catastrophically large bills to pay.”

Elliott has said the province spends $2.8 million to administer approximately $9 million in claim payments through the program every year.

resolution of conflicts and disputes across the African continent. The MSU is located within the Crisis Management and Post Conflict Reconstruction and Development (CMPCRD) Division of the Peace and Security Department (PSD).

Taylor stressed that if Ontario moves ahead with its plan it will be the first jurisdiction in the country to provide no coverage for emergency hospital and physician services received out of country.

The minister said this would be “inconsistent” with the Canada Health Act, which stipulates that all Canadians are entitled to continuing coverage of their provincial health plans when they are temporarily absent from home.

“Ontario’s approach will mean that Ontario residents will have to cover the costs of care out of pocket, should they require medical attention while travelling,” she said.

Opposition politicians have said ending the program will hurt frequent travellers. In April, NDP health critic France Gelinas wrote Petitpas Taylor and asked her to intervene and stop Ontario from eliminating the coverage.

“I am urging you to follow through on the prime minister’s commitment ... where he affirmed the federal government’s responsibility to ensure provinces follow the requirements of the Canada Health Act,” she said.

The Canadian Snowbird Association has urged the government not to make the move and said it would not only impact seniors who travel south during the winter months, but also cross-border shoppers and anyone planning a family vacation.

In her 2018 report, auditor general Bonnie Lysyk said the Ministry of Health processed an average of 88,000 out-ofcountry claims per year over a five year period and paid an average of $127 per claim.

Lysyk also noted the high administrative costs of the program, but said they arise because staff must check varying physician services fee rates and process claims manually. She recommended that the government seek ways to reduce administrative costs by adopting a single reimbursement rate for all health services obtained out-of-country.

She also recommended the government bolster efforts to inform Ontarians of the limit on reimbursement rates under the program and on the need to purchase private health insurance before travelling.

Appealing against Non-fulfilment of Residency Obligation for Permanent Residents

Not all cases of loss of permanent residence are appealable to the Immigration Appeal Division (IAD) of the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB). Specifically, section 64 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) forbids appeals to the IAD if the foreign national or permanent resident has been found to be inadmissible on grounds of security, violating human or international rights, serious criminality or organized criminality.

Decisions based on a finding of inadmissibility on the ground of misrepresentation may also not be appealable unless the foreign national in question is the sponsor’s spouse, common-law partner or child. Permanent residents of Canada are however, generally, not denied appeal rights in matters related to non-fulfilment of residency obligations.

Permanent residents may appeal to the IAD against a decision made outside Canada on the residency obligation

in Canada.

under section 28 of the Act pursuant to section 63 of the Act. They have to act within a permissible time frame. If a permanent resident does not submit an appeal to the IAD within the time period allowed for the filing of such an appeal, then the decision made outside Canada will become a final determination in accordance with subsection 46(1)(b) of the Immigration Act. Section 28 of the Immigration Act requires a permanent resident to comply with a residency obligation with respect to every five-year period. Basically, permanent residents are required to demonstrate that at least a total of 730 days in the fiveyear period have been “spent”

The Immigration Act most flexibly spells out four principal ways that permanent residents can meet the residency obligation of 730 days within the five-year period. It is a requirement that the permanent resident must be physically present in Canada; must be accompanying abroad a spouse or common-law partner who is a Canadian citizen; must be employed abroad, on a full-time basis, by a prescribed Canadian business or in the public service of Canada or of a province; or must be accompanying abroad a Canadian permanent resident spouse, common-law partner or parent who is also outside Canada and who is employed on a full-time basis, by a prescribed Canadian business or in the service of Canada or of a province.

Officers first assess the cumulative number of days the permanent resident has been physically present in Canada to determine if the person has acquired 730 days physical

presence in the preceding fiveyear period. If the cumulative number of days physically present is less than 730, then the officers will look at the issues of accompanying a family member, and /or the nature of employment of the permanent resident, outside Canada, if applicable.

The onus rests with the permanent resident to provide information and evidence to satisfy an officer that the residency obligation has been, or will be, met. For example, if a permanent resident has been a permanent resident for less than five years, it is sufficient for the permanent resident to demonstrate at examination that he or she will be able to meet the residency obligation in respect of the five-year period at the end of the fiveyear period.

If, after considering the foregoing in its totality, the combined total number of days the permanent resident is deemed to have spent in Canada within the preceding five-year period is still less

than 730, the residency obligation may still be met if there are humanitarian and compassionate considerations that might warrant retention of the permanent resident status.

One should however not count so much on humanitarian and compassionate considerations which are principally subjective.

The issues involved in the determination of residency obligation could be very confusing in a situation where the number of days of physical presence in Canada within the five-year period under examination is under 730.

Budget Review: Luxury Vehicle Levy gone Government says it has withdrawn the controversial Luxury Vehicle Tax levy which was met with a lot of resistance when it was first introduced.

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori- Atta, who made this announcement in the 2019 Mid-Year Budget Review on Monday said the Akufo-Addo led government had taken note of the concerns raised by many following the introduction of the tax.

“We have noted suggestions from the general public on the implementation of this tax and Mr. Speaker, as a listening Government, we are proposing to the House, the withdrawal of the levy,” he said.

According to the minister, his ministry will nonetheless continue to improve and expand the tax net through other innovative sources of raising domestic revenue.

The minister said, “We will continue to improve compliance, expand the tax net and explore other innovative sources of raising revenue.”

The luxury vehicle tax was introduced in July last year to levy vehicles with engine capacities of more than CC2.9 in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in order to control emissions and reduce

the

impact

on

climate

change.

Under the said levy, vehicles with engine capacities from 3.0 to 3.5 litres were to pay an annual tax of GHC 1,000. Those with engine capacities between 3.6 to 4.0 litres were to pay GHC 1,500 annually while those with 4.1 litres and beyond were required to pay an annual tax of GHC 2000.

Almost a year after its implementation, the levy has been met with opposition from several stakeholders.

The Minister said, the decision to withdraw the tax was influenced by feedback the government received on the implementation of the law from some stakeholders. theghanareport.

How do you stop comparing yourself to others – you must compare yourself only to the previous you!

Comparing ourselves to others is very common so much so that it’s become ‘normal’, but not everything ‘normal’ or common is profitable. This digital age has made it the norm to automatically and constantly be in observation of other peoples’ lives – forgetting that those people show us the best part of their lives, or the part of their lives that they want us to see and know.

A study found that Facebook use(https:// w w w. n c b i . n l m . n i h . gov/pmc/articles/ PMC4183915/) was associated with lower self-esteem, poorer mental health, and greater body shame.

In fact, people who quit Facebook and/ or Instagram, instantly experienced a boost in life satisfaction and positivity.

If you feel like your life isn’t measuring up to your peers because you are probably comparing yourself to them, keep reading! I’m going to show how to stop comparing yourself to others.

Although it may be okay to compare yourself to others at some point in your life, when it starts to feel like you are farther behind due to the comparison you’re doing, and you’re focusing on other people’s lives at the expense on yours then you’re digging yourself into trouble. You must stop immediately. If you need help, then get it right away.

There is however a trick or twist to this, and that is learning how to use comparison as a tool for growth and motivation.

Comparing yourself to people whom you admire and aspire to become is a good thing.

I believe it is natural human tendency to compare ourselves

with others. Related to comparison is to compete or to cooperate with one another as human beings. Rather than being hardwired to compete or cooperate, we have evolved to do both. The goal is to learn how to strike the right balance between these two forces so that you can get more of whatever it is that you want in life.

If you want to stop comparing yourself to others, the first thing you need to do is figure out the root cause of this behavior.

Oftentimes, this comes from an overvaluing of the human need for significance.

We all have the need to be significant in life – it’s a human need, as Tony Robbins has taught.

However, if the only way that you evaluate your worth is by way of social comparison, you are setting yourself up for a lifetime of dissatisfaction.

There will always be someone who is farther ahead than you; who is more beautiful than you; who is more successful than you; who is more slender or skinnier than you; whose husnband or wife is more intelligent or cooler than yours; whose children are smarter, and in your own judgment better than yours.

There’s simply always someone out there who is simply ahead of you in some form, way, or shape. In turn, this will cause you to feel like you are falling behind.

With this mindset, you won’t be able to move forward with life. You will always feel stuck in one place. I think we can all agree that this doesn’t feel good.

We are sold, and buy into the idea, that we aren’t enough. However, you must know and believe that you are more than enough – no matter how or what or who you are in any given moment. Yes, strive to be better because growth and advancement is a human need because if you stop growing and

advancing then you’re a living dead person. But of course, don’t compare or be in competition with others. In effect, we are programmed to be dissatisfied with who we are. Research(https:// w w w. h u f f p o s t . c o m / entry/comparingyourself_b_4441288) has found that comparing breeds feelings of envy, low-self confidence, and depression.

The second best way to stop comparing yourself to others is to start giving more weight to other human needs. Focus on

needs that have a bigger positive impact than negative. For example, there is no downside to focusing on the need for growth, contribution or love. In fact, by being a giver, people will make you significant without having to ask for it.

Lastly, you could always do a digital detox. I would argue that this is only a band aid solution to a bigger problem.

However, it will give you the space to start focusing on yourself and boosting your own self-esteem and developing yourself

in other ways instead of obsessing about the lives of others. When I stopped comparing myself to others I didn’t care whether or not I was wearing makeup before I step out. I care that I am decently and dressed very well and I step out in confidence in my own skin – know who I am and whose I am. I don’t care what brand name shoes I have on or what brand name jacket or coat I am wearing. I care that I have the right size jacket or coat and it serves the purpose for which I have it on – to cover me up and keep

me warm or enhance my formal appearance, and that is what matters.

When you come to this point in your life, you literally set yourself FREE! When you stop comparing yourself to others, you start focusing on what is working well in your life. In the words of Lecrae, “Stop comparing yourself to others. You have your own race to run. Finish well.” You are more than enough and you are doing the best that you can with what you have.

This summer workshop for the youth dubbed ‘Modern Batik Couture’ is organized under the auspices of the Ghanaian Canadian Association of Ontario (GCAO) and funded by the Toronto Arts Council.

The workshop which began on July 3, 2019 is being facilitated by the renowned Batik artist, David Kibuuka from Uganda, and Lorena who is a versatile

fashion designer based in Toronto.

All the thirteen registered participants ranging from the ages of ten to eighteen years have designed marvellous works which would be exhibited at the forthcoming GhanaFest to be held in Toronto this August.

The overwhelming interest that the products of this workshop have generated among some Ghanaian parents in the community has encouraged the organizers to begin planning another Batik Couture workshop for more youth in the Toronto Ghanaian community during next year.

It was homecoming of sorts for Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawimia as he arrived at the Bear Creek Park in Surrey, a suburb of Vancouver for this year’s GhanaFest July 20. A graduate of Simon Fraser University, Dr. Bawumia was met by an enthusiastic crowd of nearly 2,000, among them many old friends.

In a speech, Dr. Bawumia stressed the government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo placed a high premium on the contribution of the Ghanaian Diaspora to the development of Ghana. In this regard, a Secretariat of Diaspora Affairs is housed at the Jubilee House, the seat of government.

The vice president outlined a number of achievements chalked by the government, prominent among which are the introduction ofa free Senior High School (SHS) education programme, the bringing down inflation to single digit, digitization several sectors of the economy, and the introduction of medical drones . Dr. Bawumia touted the medical drone technology as a significant achievement, making Ghana the leader in the world.

Ghana’s Chief Justice view on “mass production” of Lawyers in Ghana is Worrisome By: Prof. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB

On Tuesday July 23, 2019, the Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, Justice Sophia Akuffo, dropped a bombshell which most media houses in Ghana carried with bold headlines, top among them was “I will not allow mass production of lawyers in Ghana”.

Addressing the Bench, Bar and Faculty Conference at the Labadi Beach Hotel on the theme “the Changing Landscape in the Law – the Judge, the Lawyer and the Academic”, the Chief Justice said any attempt to allow the production of lawyers without efficient control, checks and balances will be rejected irrespective of who is advocating for it.

She said that as long as she supervises legal education in Ghana and the Judicial System, she will not allow the mass production of lawyers in the country.

According to her, the mass production of lawyers poses a great danger to the people of the country who would require the services of a good lawyer in their life time.

The Chief Justice opined that “those of us who have been too long on the General Legal Council, those of us who spent too long on the disciplinary committee, we have course to worry because the kind of misconduct are such that there is no way anybody envisaged these categories of misconduct when the legal profession act was been enacted in the 1960”.

She continued that, “those of you lawyers and those of your lecturers who are busy advocating free scale, mass admissions into the professional law course, and mass production of lawyers, to be careful what you wish for. So long as I have anything to do with it, it won’t happen. Just like you can’t mass produce doctors and surgeons, Ghanaians must not have mass-produced lawyers imposed on them.”

Reaction to this iron-clad declaration by the Chief Legal brain in Ghana was swift from many experts and many other sources. A few examples:

The director of Policy Research at the Center Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Dr. Kojo Asante, pointed out that producing more lawyers in the country will not reduce the quality of legal education in the country.According to him, the system must not be tampered with in a way to compulsorily limit the number of people trained and graduated as lawyers.

Dr. Asare said although there is a genuine concern to ensure that quality is not sacrificed for a so-called mass admission policy, there must not be deliberate actions to curtail the number of people seeking to be trained as lawyers.

“The logic for me doesn’t fit. Let us go through the regime, but putting a cap is not the way to assess quality. She is one important voice but we still have to make the case. If more of us understand and appreciate that we need to change the system then I think at the end, that is what we should do,” he said.

KwakuAsareadmonished the Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo to focus on the efficiency of the courts in Ghana and allow the universities to deliver law education to students.

According to him the universities are the best bet in training lawyers and delivering legal education.

Prof. Asare said that if the bar examination is diagnostic enough, it will ensure that only quality students are admitted into law schools.

“I will suggest that the Chief Justice should focus on enhancing the efficiency of the court and allow the universities to use their

comparative advantage in delivering legal education and training lawyers then we can agree on some form of bar examination that will be administered to all law graduates and those who pass. If the bar examination is diagnostic enough it will pick up the high-quality lawyers ”, he said.

The Chairman of the UK/Ireland Chapter of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), AlhajiAlhassanMbalbaalso took issue with the Chief Justice’s remarks. He indicated that the comments by the Chief Justice does not promote a fair, just and equal society.He argued, that public discourse on legal education “is not about mass production of lawyers but making legal education accessible to qualified applicants without unfair barriers and restrictions”. He stressed, that the Chief Justice must rather concentrate on liberalising professional legal training like it is done in other jurisdictions, especially in the United Kingdom by “breaking the monopoly enjoyed by the Ghana Law School over legal education in Ghana”.

He suggested that more universities be licensed to run professional legal education while the Ghana School of Law opens more campuses in the country, especially in the Northern part of the country.

The NDC Chairman, ended by describing as unfortunate, the comments by the Chief Justice and called for legal education to be made more fairer and accessible so that the country can boost of “more of Martin Amidus’, Dominic Ayines’, AkufoAddos’, Ace Ankomahs’, Betty MouldIddrisus’ and Atugubas”.

Ironically and fortunately for my friend, this Chair of that ill-fated interview died in a car crash on the Accra-Akosombo road two days after that interview. The Law faculty called him back and offered him admission. Today, he is one of the top lawyers in Ghana and has been a Minister before in one of Ghana’s recent governments. He also sarcastically jokes sometimes that if God had not killed that guy who chaired his law admission interview, he would not have had the opportunity to study law and become a lawyer.

Fake honey continues to pour into Canada and local beekeepers are feeling the sting

Fake honey cut with corn syrup, rice, beet and other sugars is pouring into Canada and making its way onto grocery store shelves, local producers warn.

The producers, who pride themselves on turning out the real thing, have been abuzz about the food fraud for years.

They say they are feeling the sting and consumers should be aware.

Since June 2018, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has been homing in on fake honey, using what it calls “targeted surveillance.”

The federal agency collected 240 samples across Canada from honey importers, brokers, distributors, blenders, processing facilities and grocery aisles.

While all of the domestic samples proved to be authentic, more than a fifth of imported honey from a number of countries, including Greece, China, India, Pakistan and Vietnam, all failed tests at the CFIA lab in Ottawa.

“Twenty-two per cent [of the samples], were found to contain foreign sugars such as corn syrup, rice syrup and cane sugar syrup,” Jodi White, a national manager in CFIA’s consumer protection and market fairness division, told CBC Toronto.

The CFIA has been testing for adulterated honey for more than two decades, but this year’s inspection targeted some suppliers that had been flagged in other jurisdictions for issues such as unusual trading patterns.

“It’s based on targeted sampling,” White said. “It’s not necessarily indicative of the overall market.”

The inspection has stopped 12,800 kilograms of adulterated honey, valued at around $77,000, from entering the Canadian market.

Beekeepers can’t compete Chris Hiemstra, a thirdgeneration beekeeperis one of many honey producers who say they’re feeling the sting from cheaper, adulterated

imports.

He said he knew he had to expand the family business if he wanted to keep his honey farm in Aylmer, Ont. “We’re trying to support the family and selling honey wholesale by the barrel on the world market was really difficult and unsustainable,” he said. “It was for survival.”

Hiemstra has spent the last 20 years building his farm, Clovermead, into a larger, agri-tourism adventure farm where locals and visitors pay to tour the property.

Patrons take wagon rides, visit farm animals and learn about, taste and buy honey produced by the farm’s 24 million bees.

The business is doing well thanks to the tourism, as well as revenue from honey sales online, but Hiemstra said he worries about his fellow honey wholesalers across the country trying to make ends meet.

“They’re big producers and they need a fair price for

their honey. Otherwise, they cannot pay their employees and support their families.

Those are the people that are impacted,” he said.

“Someone can sell sugar for 20 cents a pound and say it’s honey against someone that needs $2 a pound to make a living. That [price] gap is huge and there’s no way you can compete against that.”

Looking for real honey? Look local (and for bee stings) Honey tends to change hands a lot on its way to store shelves, and it can be hard to know at what point the product gets diluted.

“It is a very complex supply chain and this is something we’re looking at,” White explained to CBC News, speaking inside the CFIA lab. “[We’re looking at] where the vulnerabilities are in the supply chain and where is adulteration or other misrepresentation being introduced.”

Hiemstra said you can be sure it’s not the beekeeper.

“At the beginning, the beekeeper works with bees, spinning the honey out of the frames, putting it into either jars or into a barrel,” he explained to CBC News in Clovermead’s honey shop.

“Someone after that is taking it and putting it in big vats and blending it and mixing it.

That’s not the beekeeper, it’s something further down the line,” he said, suggesting some unprofessional “professional” food handlers are to blame.

Hiemstra has some advice for consumers who want to be sure they’re getting the real stuff.

First, “when it’s really cheap, you’re probably getting what you’re paying for,” he said.

“I would say they should try to find somebody that’s got their name on a bottle.”

As for vetting beekeepers like him?

“Look at them. See if they’ve got dirt on their hands and they’ve got swollen cheeks from bee stings.” CBCNews

Dr. Bawumia touted the medical drone technology as a significant achievement, making Ghana the leader in the world.

Nutrition and Healthy Eating In this issue we will review two important nutritional issues.

1. Is multigrain the same thing as whole grain? Which is the healthier choice?

Multigrain and whole grain are not interchangeable terms.

Whole grain means that all parts of the grain kernel — the bran, germ and endosperm — are used. In contrast, multigrain means that a food contains more than one type of grain, although none of them may necessarily be whole grains. The same goes for other variations, such as “seven-grain.”

Whole-grain foods are a healthy choice because they contain nutrients, fiber and other healthy plant compounds found naturally in the grain.

Look for products that list the first ingredient as “whole wheat,” “whole oats” or a similar whole grain. While “whole grains” may signify one of many types of healthy grains, “whole wheat” labels

the specific grain used. Either term may identify a food that’s a good source of fiber, several B vitamins and minerals.

Healthy adults should eat at least three 1-ounce (28-gram) equivalents of whole grains a day as part of a balanced diet 2.

Ontario prepares for ‘very difficult’ flu season, health minister says

TORONTO - This year’s flu season will likely be a bad one, Ontario’s health minister said Monday, and the province is stocking up on extra highstrength vaccines in preparation.

“We expect that it’s going to be a very difficult year,” Christine Elliott said after an unrelated announcement.

“Based on what’s happening in Australia we sort of take a look at what’s likely to happen in Ontario.”

Australian health authorities are reporting an early flu season unusually high activity for this time of year. Though the overall severity is reported as low, hospitalizations are three times what is normal for this time, and there have been more than 200 deaths so far, according to that country’s department of health.

Ontario has already ordered 300,000 more doses of high-dose flu vaccines than last year, bringing the total order to 1.2 million doses, said a spokesman for Elliott.

That vaccine has four times the amount of antigens than the regular flu shot and is given to more vulnerable people, such as seniors. It can be provided in hospitals, long-term care homes and by primary care providers.

Elliott said it was proven particularly effective last year, and that the government will also be rolling out an advertising campaign, encouraging people to get the flu shot.

“It’s really important to prevent it in the first place, but we also need to be prepared to deal with it when it does strike Ontario, both in terms of hospital care, home care and community care,” she said.

“We will be advertising to people that we want them to get out and get the flu shot and deal with some of the myths out there about getting the flu vaccine because ... the anti-vaxer theory is out there as well as far as the flu vaccine is concerned, too.”

Elliott did not yet have a specific date when the flu shot will be available, but she said it will be well in advance of flu season.

Researchers reported early this year that the previous flu season’s vaccine appeared to be highly effective.

The analysis by researchers with the Canadian Sentinel Practitioner Surveillance Network and published online in the journal Euro Surveillance, shows it was 72 per cent effective in preventing infection with the H1N1 respiratory virus overall across all age groups.

Spending 2 Hours In Nature Every Week Significantly Boosts Health: Study It doesn’t matter if the time is spent all at once or in shorter visits, researchers say

By Sima Shakeri Modern life is busy, so it can be hard to take some time out to be with nature. But it may be worth the effort as a new study suggests slotting sometime in the great outdoors could be pretty good for you.

The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports in mid-June, says spending two hours in nature every week can likely significantly boost health.

People that spent at least 120 minutes per week in nature reported higher psychological well-being and better physical health than those who didn’t visit nature at all, or those who went for less than two hours a week. It didn’t seem to matter if the 120 minutes were spent in nature all at once or spread out throughout the week in shorter bursts. Spending more than two hours didn’t seem to bring about any particular benefits, researchers noted.

Other studies have also found a connection between time spent in nature and health, including a 2017 study that suggested time spent in green spaces can help with depression and anxiety, as well as health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure. But, this is the first time an amount of time to spend outdoors has been quantified.

“It’s well known that getting outdoors in nature can be good for people’s health and wellbeing but until now we’ve not been able to say how much is enough. The majority of nature visits in this research took place within just two miles of home so even visiting local urban green spaces seems to be a good thing,” Dr. Mathew

White, who led the study at the University of Exeter, said in a news release.

“Two hours a week is hopefully a realistic target for many people, especially given that it can be spread over an entire week to get the benefit,” he said.

The research is based on government interviews with 20,000 people in England about what they spent the last week doing. Results applied to all genders, ages, ethnic groups, occupations, socioeconomic levels and people with chronic illnesses and disabilities. The study controlled for the amount of green space individuals had in their own neighbourhoods, whether they had pets, and other individual factors.

It didn’t seem to matter if participants spent their time exercising or merely resting on a bench, as long as they were outdoors, benefits were seen.

White told the Guardian that researchers weren’t sure why the nature time helped people, but he theorized it was due to a sense of tranquility that people gained when they spent time

outdoors.

“Most people are under multiple pressures at any given time. So you go away in a natural setting, it is quiet, it is relaxing and it gives you time to start to process things.”

Among respondents who spent little or no time outdoors, a quarter said they were in poor health and nearly half said they weren’t satisfied with their lives. In the group that spent 120 minutes or more in nature every week, only oneseventh said they were in poor health, and only a third weren’t satisfied with their lives.

“There are many reasons why spending time in nature may be good for health and well-being, including getting perspective on life circumstances, reducing stress, and enjoying quality time with friends and family,” co-author Terry Hartig, of Sweden’s Uppsala University, said in the news release.

“The current findings offer valuable support to health practitioners in making recommendations about spending time in nature to promote basic health and wellbeing, similar to guidelines for weekly physical.” Huffpost

President AkufoAddo Launches 2019 PANAFEST and Year of Return in Cape Coast, Ghana

In his address launching the event, President AkufoAddo admonished Africans and people of African descent to resolve never again to allow African peoples to undergo such dehumanizing episode like the slave trade in their lives. He described the slave trade as a “barbaric episode” which must never be allowed to occur again in any form. The president pointed out that this year’s historic celebrations must also provide the opportunity for Ghanaians and their “kith and kin abroad and especially in the Americas to strengthen the bonds between them”. He said that we have “the opportunity to restate clearly that the destiny of all Black people is bound up with the destiny of African people”.

In attendance were a large number of people of African descent from the United States, Canada and Europe. There was a strong delegation from Canada led by the Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine, former Canadian Minister of Multiculturalism and the Status of Women, and the first Fairness Commissioner of Ontario. The Canadian contingent included dancers, drummers, and singers organized by Dance Immersion Canada.

The President admonished the Diasporans and Returnees to take advantage of their visit and the celebrations discover the traditions, culture and flavours of Ghana through “our music, art, culture and cuisine”. “Our country”, he said, “is steeped in a history that we are proud of. Visit our national treasures, and learn about the history ofour people, who are also your people”, he said to thunderous applause.

Ghanaian Presbyterian Church, Toronto organizes celebratory service to climax Silver Jubilee

By Joe Kingsley Eyiah A celebratory worship/awards service was held by the Ghanaian Presbyterian Church on Sunday, July 28, 2019 in Toronto as a climax of their month-long celebration of the 25th Anniversary this year.

Members of the church cladded in their anniversary cloth designed by one of their youth, Jessica Amoasi-Danquah, praised God and danced to melodious tunes rendered by the ace gospel singer of the day, Diana Hamliton who travelled from Ghana to celebrate with the church.

The speaker for the day, the immediate past Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, The Rev. Daniel W. Cho. He dwelt on the ‘Church as a community which ought to demonstrate LOVE OF CHRIST for all kinds of people!’ Rev. Cho praised the Ghanaian Presbyterian Church for its community spirit and records of its service to mankind within the Toronto Metropolitan Area.

Special recognitions were made of the the four Pastors of the Church namely Mr. George Asiedu Pimpong, Rev. Stephen Asotara Alando, Rev. Tetteh Suomi Akunnor, Rev. Enoch Adjei Pobee and Rev. Frank Oguase Adu. Rev. Pobee and Rev. Adu were able to make it from Ghana to Toronto to grace the occasion.

Other church members recognized during the function were founding group including Theophilus Awuku, Wofa Yaw Nyarko, William Ofori Asiamah, Grace Otema Dankyi, William Ankomah, Charlse Agyei Amoamah, Edward Dankyi and George Baiden.

MP Judy Sgro, a veteran Canadian politician, and Constable Obeng (RCMP) were also honoured for their

support to the church over the years.

The outgoing Resident Pastor, Rev. Dr. Raymond Baah Abekah was praised for his leadership of the Church for the past 5 years.

The Executives of the Ghanaian Canadian Association of Ontario (GCAO) used the occasion to present Rev. Dr. Abeka with a citation which describes him as an ‘affable Pastor with a great community spirit!’

Bringing the Gospel to our Community by Rev. Isaac DeGraft Takyi SEEK GOD THROUGH PERSONAL PRAYER “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need” Matthew 6:33 (NLT) “But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul”. Deuteronomy 4:29 (NIV) Prayer must Come Before any other thing for the believer.

Prayer must be a priority to the Christ follower. It must come above all else.

ButPrayer must be planned, must be patterned, strategic and intentionally executed.

The Bible and church history reveal different models or patterns of prayer that Christians over the years have used to deepen their intimacy with God. Every believer can pray, every believer must know how to pray, all Christians ought to pray always and every Christian, like Christ, must have a unique pattern for prayer.

Remember, prayer is talking to God, listening to God, God talking to you and both of you loving on each other.

Dear believers, God wants to dwell among His people.

God delights in inhabiting

the praise of His people.

God wants His people to experience His presence, encounter Him at a personal level, enjoy and operate in the anointing He gives. This encounter does not and will not just happen. There are divine patterns to follow.

God, for example, gave Moses a pattern. God told Moses to build the Tabernacle according to the pattern shown him. We shall consider the Tabernacle model of prayer in the future.

Out of the varied models’ people have used we will consider a few that we can practice in aiding us in our quest for more of God. Do you desire to be used by God? Do you want to know how to pray? Is prayer and praying a difficult discipline

for you to follow? How can we measure up to Jesus’ expectation for us to pray for at least one hour? Jesus asked His disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane “So could you not watch with me one hour?

Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” Matthew 26:40, 41 ESV. Our first model is the ACTS-L prayer model.

With this prayer model, if you allocate 12 minutes to each part,you can pray for an hour easily.

ACTS-L Prayer (12 minutes each) The “ACTS-L” prayer model is a simple prayer that we can implement in our daily walk with God. I can attest to the fact that this has helped me develop my personal prayer life since age 13, when I gave my life to Christ as my personal Lord, Saviour, Baptizer and soon coming King. The only way to pray is to pray. The best way to best pray is to pray. Arise and Pray: Start with: A—Adoration (2 Chronicles 20:21-22). Almighty Father, etc. Spend time here to worship God in truth, in songs, and in the spirit.

Continue with: C—Confession (1 John 1: 9, Psalm 103:1-5). Confess, from the bottom of our heart, the sinner lifestyle you will shed and in exchange pick up a new robe of righteousness.

Be open, honest and truthful before your God. Do Not Neglect Gratitude: T—Thanksgiving (Ephesians 5:20). Give thanks to the Almighty Father for everything and anything He has done. Think about His goodness, kindness, mercy and grace. Thank God! Consider Others too: S—Supplication (Philippians 4:6). Ask God for ideas, gifts, fruits of the Spirit, needs’, and others’ needs, that can only come from Him. Think about your family, friends, church, country, missionaries and the lost. Pray for others!

God loves to speak too: L—Listen to God Take time to be attentive and patient for the Lord to speak to you. It will be great to write what God tells you down and go out there and live it out.

Be inspired by the following scriptures to pray 1 Peter 1:3:

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”

Ephesians 1:16-17: “I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him.”

Romans 15:30-32: “I appeal to you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf, that I may be delivered from the unbelievers in Judea, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, so that by God’s will I may come to you with joy and be refreshed in your company.”

Romans 12:12: “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.”

Colossians 4:2: “Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.”

Trading our way into prosperity By: Dr. Charles Mensah, Economist and Policy Analyst, Scarborough, ON. Canada

An ancient African proverb which says “When you take out a single broomstick, it can be easily broken; but when you put them together, they cannot be broken” is perhaps been realized in this new African trade deal. A “Dark Continent” as it was once called, is now home to the world’s fastest growing economies and emerging markets. With the strides made in industrialization and improvement in service delivery across the continent, Mother Africa is now in the news again with its phenomenal trade agreement among member states which will be the world’s largest free trade deal since the formation of World Trade Organization.

Fifty-four out of fiftyfive African nations have signed the agreement which covers a market of more than 1.2 billion people with a growing middle class and a combined GDP of more than $ 3.4 trillion.

Projected as the youngest population in the world coupled with its rich and abundant resources, a strong deal that enhances intra-trade could be all it needs to transform the continent.

Recent statistics released by the Africa Growth Initiative at Brookings in its annual Foresight Publication indicated that, whiles intra-regional trade in Asia stood at 59% and 69% in Europe, trade within African countries was 17% in 2017.However, estimates from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) points out that AfCFTA has the potential of boosting intratrade in Africa by 52.3% by eliminating import duties, and to double this trade if non-tariff barriers are removed.

After the news of AfCFTA entering in force reached its threshold hit the media in May this year, Africans, ‘diasporians’ and the world have been asking what this deal entails and how they can strategically position themselves to foster growth.

In the early 1960s after the colonial era, independent countries in Africa decided to come together in the spirit of corporation to form the Organization of African Unity (OAU).

One of its mandate was to foster trade among member countries. As a result, in Lagos, Nigeria, an Action Plan was adopted in 1980 that was aimed at minimising the dependency from the Western countries by championing intraregional trade blocs within Africa.

This

created grounds for regional blocs like Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), Southern African Development Community (SADC), and many more to thrive and integrate.

As globalization set it and regional markets became strongly interlinked, Africa Union (AU) member formally called OAU met in Addis Ababa in 2012 to set 2017 as a year where there will be free trade among member countries in Africa. Though the 2017 target was not met, the agreement establishing AfCFTA took effect on May 30,2019 for the 24-member countries that had submitted their instrument of ratification.

AfCFTA is aimed at establishing a single market for goods and services that is facilitated by the free movement of persons in order to deepen economic integration of the African continent.

This ground-breaking deal hinges on seven priority action clusters; trade policy, trade facilitation, productive capacity, trade related infrastructure, trade finance, trade information and factor market integration. As a result, there will the need for countries to start implementing trade policies that will make them more open and enhance industrialization.

Because the border points and the harbours are essential in intra-trade facilitation, governments who want to benefit from AfCFTA must put in place measures and policies that will eliminate red tapes, slash tariffs and remove non-tariff barriers.

Though this deal deserves commendation, there is still a lot to be done.

The second phase of the agreement which looks at the intellectual property rights, investments, and competition policy has been set in motion.

However, there are still some outstanding issues in the first phase that are still being addressed.

Some of the outstanding issues according to the Brooking Africa Growth Initiative policy brief published in May 2019 include; the implications of a non-traditional most favoured nation clause, schedules of service commitment, and rules of origin. Presently, it is unclear which products are subject to tariff cuts, which service sectors will be liberalized, and rules regarding the type of value addition that must occur within member States in order for a product to benefit from AfCFTA. Whiles recent data from

the World Tourism Organization shows an 8.6% growth in international visits to Africa compared with a global average of 7%, intra-African tourism has always remained low.

According to the 2017 Africa Visa Openness Index, Africans on average need visas to enter 55% of countries on their own continent. This restriction denies member countries from benefiting from the multi-billion tourism sector. Poor roads, high cost of transportation, and poor infrastructure in the hospitality industry also account for the low patronage of tourism among African countries.

As the full fruition of this deal will bring about free movement of African citizens within the continent, governments must address these issues for them to benefit fully from the tourism sector.

A comprehensive study

by ECA indicated that when Africans traded among themselves, they engaged more with the exchange of manufactured and processed goods.

Therefore, a successful AfCFTA deal show propel diversification of exports and accelerate product sophistication among member countries.

This will help them from over relying on rents from extractive industries.

The agricultural industry will also benefit immensely from this trade deal. For example, in 2015, African countries spent about $63 billion in food imports which were largely from other continents. As projected by the ECA, the AfCFTA deal can lead to a 2030% trade increase in agricultural products among member countries by 2040. With vast arable lands and some rapid industrializing farm systems, countries can benefit fully from this trade deal as they will have easy access to other markets to avoid postharvest losses.

It is important to note however that there is no trade deal that does not produce winners and losers. Therefore, if African countries want to benefit extensively from this deal, it is essential to take a critical look at the various continental trade deals in Europe, Middle East, Asia and North America, to understand their flaws and strengths and how they can learn from it. Also, the regional blocs existing within the continent should be a great resource as it provides abundant knowledge of trade activities characterised by each geographical area and culture.

Movie Review: Bride from Africa Love Transcends all barriers

By Vernon Ayiku, Toronto Bride from Africa, is an independent African film by director Avenger Danquah.

If you were at the red carpet premiere at Albion Cinemas, located at 1530 Albion Rd, on June 30th before even seeing the film a few things were clear.

First, as a director, Avenger showed a clear passion for African cinema. While foreign film premiers and especially African films can largely fly under the radar in the city, Avenger spared no expense while presenting Bride from Africa to the public for the first time. Using Albion Cinemas, famous for their Bollywood showings, the luxurious structurer of the theatre combined with the fermented Indian culture is the perfect location for a film debuting outside the realms of Hollywood and mainstream media, but still looking to be taken seriously.

Taking it a step further, Avenger also provided VIP ticket packages for guest, which included dinner with the screening and an invite to the film’s after party.

As a producer it can’t be denied, he has presented himself as a person looking to take African cinema to the next level.

Bride from Africa is a classic African film, following many familiar tropes. The film follows a young Ghanaian woman living in Toronto with her mother. She is the daughter of a fetish chief in an unknown village in Ghana. As the film opens we discover the young lady is engaged to a young white male and son of a preacher. However unbeknown to her father has promised her to man in his village back home who is expected to be the next chief. Throughout the film, man and women navigate their relationship through cultural differences, traditions and an endless amount of awkward and funny situations. If you are a fan of African cinema you will enjoy this film, the characters are familiar while sometimes stereotypical.

However the film is not without its flaws. While entertaining and funny, the film offers no insight, unique perspective or solutions to towards the issue presented. And even with a runtime of three hours, there was no definitive conclusion.

In my opinion, films like Bride from Africa lead me to pose a serious question to African film makers. With access to technology and platforms increasing, will simply seeing Africans on screen continue to be good enough? While efforts to highlight our culture through film will always be applauded, sloppy technical editing and mediocre storytelling can’t be excused.

Simply put, Bride from Africa is an entertaining watch for any African film goer looking to see characters and stories they relate to on the big screen. But overall it leaves much to be desired.
