Unfortunately this has not happened and year after year, thousands from this population group leave our educational institutions with no jobs to go to. The younger ones fill the streets of the nation’s urban centers selling anything they can lay hands on to attempt make ends meet, if ever. Some of them turn to socially unacceptable behavior and lifestyles. We can even further say that some even turn to crime when all hopes are dashed. You can see these from the numbers and ages of the youth that are arrested for involvement in crime.

youth has been the single most pervasive problem in the country since independence, and especially since the 1970s when the population started booming through the fifteen million, through the twenty million and currently hovering around thirty million people, more than half of whom are under thirty years. The dangerous and frightening aspect of this situation is the fact that successive governments from the 1970s till date have not paid any serious attention to the issue of job creation, and most importantly, targeting the youth: those between 15 and thirty years. This is the group, the core of the nation’s population, its strength and life-line who keep graduating from elementary, secondary, post-secondary and tertiary institutions every year with hopes of finding jobs to live independently and to contribute their quota to the national life and national economy.

According to the Census Bureau report in 2016, there were over 27,000 Ghanaian Canadians in Ontario, however presently, that number is predicted to have increased to over 50,000, significantly increasing the demand of the GCAO to support the community and to enhance the living standards of Ghanaian Canadians in Ontario through social, cultural, and educational programs, and other diaspora

These presentations generated so much interest that it was therefore not surprising that the suggestion to revisit the panel discussions in an online forum after the conference was very well received by the Women’s Wing members. These ongoing conversations will contribute to challenging stigma and unhelpful cultural and religious perceptions of family and social relationships and dynamics in the community. The Conference ended with networking over light refreshments, giving the Guest of Honor and the community ample time to socialize and take many memorable photos in the foyer.

To this end, the women’s wing aims to support Ghanaian women of all ages by working discretely together to eradicate poverty, family and gender-based violence, to build self-confidence, creativity, and leadership skills in the women, thereby empowering the women not only to strengthen the families and transform our community, but also to promote our cultural heritage in the community for future Ghanaian Canadians.

On Sunday, 28th August 2022, once again the Guest of Honor, H.E. Mrs. Samira Bawumia’s graceful presence proved to be a galvanizing force that brought all members of our community together. To this end, the Cultural Durbar and subsequent Dinner/Dance provided an excellent opportunity for engaging the whole community; individuals, businesses, churches, and organizations, as well as our allies in community organizations and businesses in a fundraising effort towards realizing the community’s vision for a Ghanaian Canadian Heritage Center through a raffle and the auction of colorful artwork by the children in the GCAO “After School Programme”. No contribution was considered too small, and efforts to raise funds are ongoing until the Association has enough seed money to attract the needed government support. Following the 2nd Lady’s address to the community the GCAO Women’s Wing leadership presented her with a Commemorative Plaque and took the opportunity to also reward some members with recognition awards for Long and Active Service. Notable was the Moment of Silence and Remembrance held in acknowledgement of all the members the community had lost due to COVID-19, which was followed by an amazing choral interlude by the Toronto Seraphic Choir.

Earlier this year, the Liberals and New Democrats struck a deal committing the NDP to voting with the minority Liberal government in the House of Commons on confidence votes until June of 2025. In exchange, the government agreed to meet a number of policy benchmarks along the way.

The New Democrats said that at least two of those commitments must be met before the Christmas break if the Liberals want the deal to stay intact.

teachers not to give home work to their students, it stands that some work can not always be completed at school hence some home assignments for students from teachers might be necessary!

Remember the story, which was told in Ghana about a student who duped his illiterate parents by asking them to pay 3 pounds for a geography book that cost 1 pound. He told parents that “Geo” was 1 pound; “gra” was 1 pound and “phy” was 1 pound. Thus, the Geo-gra-phy book was 3 pounds instead of 1 pound!

Today, students play many other “tricks” on their parents and guardians. I would therefore use this column to shed light on a few of these tricks, which I view as “little foxes” of students. They include, lying about teachers to parents, skipping classes, ignoring their homework, coming to school unprepared and bullying weak students outside the classroom.

The “Little Foxes” of Students. Parents Watch Out!

Ignoring Homework:

Lying: A student chooses to do his or her own thing in the classroom while teaching is going on. For example, the student breaks one important principle for learning-paying attention to the teacher. The teacher takes control of the situation by, say, changing the seating position of the student concerned. However, the student fails to take responsibility for his/ her own action and goes home to tell the parents/guardian that the teacher is picking on him/her. Surprisingly, some parents/guardians simply buy into their ward’s cooked story about the teacher without finding out from the teacher the truth of the story told. These parents, unfortunately, develop ill-feelings toward the teacher in question. The student is therefore unwittingly encouraged by the home to show arrogance towards school authority. The whole community in the long run becomes the loser. For, that student grows up an indiscipline community member who willingly flouts laws of the society. He/she demonstrates irresponsibility in life. Sad! Isn’t it? Please, don’t let your child outsmart you with lies about his/her teacher. Always verify stories from your child about school from the school before jumping to conclusions. The doors of every school are open to parents who care to knock at them.

Preparing for School:

Parents ought to ensure that their children are prepared for school with not only food but also exercise/ textbooks, pens, erasers and rulers as well. Coming to school prepared is the right way to begin the day at school.

The more intriguing part of skipping classes is seen after lunch break. Some of the students who leave their school premises to eat lunch elsewhere (home, McDonalds or restaurants within the vicinity) fail to return to classes. They seek “refugee” in friends’ homes where adults are away on work or hang around parks and malls in the neighborhood. Though schools have ways and means of cross-checking on the absences of their students, it becomes difficult to track the whereabouts of students who skip classes when their (schools) telephone calls to homes of skipping students are not promptly answered. Parents could work closely with schools to close all loopholes, which students may explore to skip classes or school. These could include lunch break calls by parents to their homes from their workplaces to check on their child or leave their children in the care of responsible relatives close-by. Parents must also endeavor to return calls from their children’s schools promptly. Moreover, parents could periodically communicate with their children’s teachers on the progress of the students (their wards) at school.

This may sound strange and far from some societies where physical or even verbal harassment is highly prohibited

One could go on numerating a lot of these “little foxes” of students that parents need to be aware of and help “catch” them-lying, skipping classes, ignoring homework, coming to school unprepared, bullying, swearing, showing attitude and vandalizing school property as well as disrespecting others. Teachers have moral and professional responsibility to protect students and they need the unflinching support of parents/ guardians in this task. I couldn’t agree the more with the celebrated author Austin Clarke on his assertion that teaching elementary school is the most important stage in the process of the training of our youth. “Let’s catch them whilst they are young.” Together we build, divided we destroy!

It is very disturbing when a child comes to school without pencils, pens, erasers, rulers and exercise or textbooks. Can a farmer go to work without a cutlass or hoe? What does the farmer go to do on the farm empty-handed? Nothing! Absolutely nothing!! Sad enough some students come to school with no working tools mentioned above. They either sit idle or go round begging other students for writing materials when work is assigned them. Precious time for school work is therefore lost.

Note to Parents on Curriculum Nights: Most schools organize curriculum nights for the parents of their students at the beginning of the school year. During such nights expectations of the school around the curriculum and student behavior are clearly explained enabling parents to assist the schools for student success! Serious parents make it to such nights! Please, be one of them. Look out for your child’s school curriculum night. A word to the wise is enough!

FOCUS

Some students are “specialists” in skipping classes or school. Many parents for economic reasons leave home early in the morning for work before their children go to school. A few students from such homes take advantage of the early departure of their parents from home and skip school. Such students may roam the malls till school is over and return home creating the impression that they have been to school.

The question is how do parents know that their children have homework from school to do? Most schools, if not all, have planners (agenda books) supplied to all students at the beginning of each school year. In these planners students record all their daily homework given at school. Parents MUST check this planner everyday after school to ascertain which homework their child has to complete for school. If your child has lost his/her school planner, get him/her a new one immediately. The planner or student agenda has a lot of valuable information necessary for your child’s learning!

Watch These:

by law. Yet, bullying of younger students by older (senior) students at the blind side of teachers is not uncommon among students in places like Toronto. There have been and continue to be instances whereby older students have coerced younger students to buy them (older) lunch out of their (younger) pockets. Some younger students are made to share their lunch with bullying students under threats!

Another area of concern is how some students neglect doing their homework often “fooling” their parents that they (students) have not been receiving homework from their teachers. Though the Ministry of Education has advised

The Akans of Ghana have an adage that, “Opanyin na obi nnye bi da, na enye abofra” which literally translated means, “all adults have been children before but all children are yet to be adults.” This saying reminds me of my childhood when I often thought I could outsmart my parents in matters of schooling. Unfortunately for me at that time my parents who had been school children before could read my “tricks” faster than I envisaged!

Illegal mining, popularly called ‘Galamsey’, has remained one of the most never ending predicament confronting the nation, in its quest to preserve our water bodies and forests. Rebecca Oakes, vice-president of advanced analytics at Equifax Canada, said financial stress is becoming a very real thing for many more Canadians.

Equifax also said consumer insolvency rose to the highest levels since the start of the pandemic, mostly driven by an increase in consumer proposals.

However, despite a cool-down in the housing market, the average loan amount for first-time homebuyers only dropped 0.5 per cent in the second quarter compared with the first quarter, with the average monthly payments increasing by 10 per cent.

Ontario’s minister of health has told the province’s nursing college to go ahead with regulatory changes that could get thousands more internationally trained nurses into practice more quickly.

The report out Tuesday by the credit rating agency said the average non-mortgage debt per consumer was $21,128 in the second quarter, up 2.4 per cent compared with a year earlier.

Current rules say a nurse must have practised within the last three years to be reinstated, but that could be removed.

The report comes as economists anticipate a supersized interest rate hike from the Bank of Canada on Wednesday, as the central bank works to combat inflation.

“It is my expectation that should these amendments be approved by the government, that the college will immediately begin registering both (internationally educated nurses) and other applicants who will benefit from these changes,” she wrote to them in a letter obtained by The Canadian Press.

The nursing college had also said that with temporary registrations, it could change rules to only revoke a temporary certificate after two failed exam attempts, instead of the one attempt nurses are currently allowed. The amount of non-mortgage debt owed by Canadians is rising, boosted by new lending and higher spending linked to inflation, according to a new report by Equifax Canada.

“Highlevels. consumer demand for credit cards means a competitive marketplace for lenders. As a result, the credit limits being offered on new cards are much higher than we’ve seen in previous periods,” Oakes added.

Overall, Equifax said total non-mortgage debt rose to $591.4 billion, up 5.2 per cent from a year ago, while total consumer debt rose to $2.32 trillion in the second quarter, up 8.2 per cent compared with the same quarter last year.

“The cooling housing market in Canada should not be mistaken for increasing affordability,” Oakes said. “Affordability depends not just on home prices, but also on monthly payment obligations for a mortgage. Higher interest rates coupled with high inflation can really stretch a consumer’s monthly expenditure, while many could find it difficult to qualify for a mortgage.”

That college had also highlighted for the minister a need for practice ready assessments, which would allow internationally educated physicians to be rapidly assessed over a 12-week period of supervision and direct observation. Such programs are already used in seven other provinces and are designed to deploy physicians to underserved communities and provide a path to licensing, the college wrote to the minister.

CLARIFYING SOME AMBIGUITIES REGARDING ORPHAN SPOSORSHIPS

One of the principal objectives of Immigration Canada as indicated in section 3(1)(d) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) is to see that families are reunited in Canada. However, invasion.

Targeting the leaders of the world’s wealthiest nations, the UN chief reminded them that they are responsible for the vast majority of climate-related emissions and, even though they are also heavily impacted by record droughts, fires and floods, climate action in response, appears to be on life-support.

Government is also working towards the commencement of works on the Volivo Bridge and approach roads. Work is expected to commence by the first quarter 2023.

APO Group on behalf of Afro Nation.

Mr. Guterres slammed the actions of populist politicians who, he said, are showing “a shocking disregard for the poorest and most vulnerable in our world”, pitting people against one another, employing discrimination, misinformation, and hate speech.

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Monday, 12th September 2022, inspected ongoing work on the Asikuma-Have stretch of the Eastern Corridor Road.

Tendering processes are also on-going for the 39.2km Dufor-AdidomeAsikuma Junction and the 23.9km Asutsuare Junction – Aveyime Roads, which will serve as approach roads to the Volivo Bridge. The project is to be funded by the African Development Bank, with work expected to commence by January 2023.

Eastern Corridor: 45km Asikuma-Have Road to be completed in September 2023

The Dualisation of Ho Main Road (10km) between Sokode Gbogame and Civic Centre, the first major dual carriageway in the Volta Regional Capital, is 85% and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2022.

He wondered aloud if the reaction would be different if one third of G20 countries, rather than Pakistan, were currently underwater.

Touching on other projects on the Eastern corridor, he said “41-kilometres out of the 53-kilometres of the HaveHohoe stretch which is being done by Greenhouse Construction has already been completed.”

Returning to the example of Pakistan, Mr. Guterres insisted that the country, and other climate hotspots, need floodresilient infrastructure now, arguing that at least half of all climate finance, must go to adaptation and climate

in the Upper East Region. It is the shortest route linking the northern part of the country to the south.

This project is part of the fiftyeight (58) road projects being constructed in the Volta region, out of which one hundred and twenty-nine (129) kilometers have been completed

Afro Nation Ghana takes place 29th & 30th December 2022 at Marine Drive, Black Star Square, Accra.

The UN has hailed the success of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which has enabled food and fertilizer supplies to finally leave war-torn Ukrainian ports, and played a part in reducing global food prices, as they reached record highs following Russia’s

The UN chief began by recalling the devastation he witnessed on his recent trip to flood-hit Pakistan, which he described as a window into a “future of permanent and ubiquitous climate chaos on an unimaginable scale”.

Here to witness the hottest names this December, spanning the very best in the African and international Afrobeats, Amapiano, and Dancehall scene, Afro Nation Ghana looks to foster even stronger ties with the continent around the world, re-connecting, educating, and creating, whilst putting on a festival never seen before on this scale.

This project is part of the fifty-eight (58) road projects being constructed in the Volta region, out of which one hundred and twenty-nine (129) kilometers have been completed.

Engineer Oliver Acquah-Techie, Chief Executive Officer of First Sky Construction Limited, the contractors of the project, noted that construction of the road which was awarded in September 2021, and is progressing according to schedule.

At a press briefing on Wednesday, Mr. Guterres promised to address the many challenging issues facing the planet, in his speech next week to the General Assembly, which will also contain concrete recommendations for lasting solutions, and a call to action.

Thatresilience.funding, he said, must come from the leading economies.

“Lower the temperature — now”, he said. “Don’t flood the world today; don’t drown it tomorrow.”

Ghana welcomes thousands from the global diaspora travelling home to party and be together with friends and family during the turn of the new year in West Africa’s most exciting cultural hub. Around the festival’s core programming, a number of unmissable parties are planned around the city and available to Golden and VIP ticket holders, starting on 28th Dec with the Piano People Welcome Party and ending with a NYE special on 31st Dec.

there is still a real risk of multiple famines this year, Mr. Guterres warned.

Global hunger was already rising before the COVID-19 pandemic, he said, and has never recovered. Many countries are dealing with a cost-of-living crisis, which is hitting the poorest people and communities hardest, and the rights of women and girls worldwide, are going into reverse.

All countries need to cut emissions every year - with the G20, as the leading emitters, leading the way, Mr. Guterres told correspondents in New York - until the global temperature rise is limited to 1.5 degrees above preindustrial levels.

Distributed by APO Group on behalf of The Presidency, Republic of Ghana.

He continued, “22-kilometre of the 30-kilometre Hohoe to Jasikan, and the entire 56-kilometre JasikanDodo Pepeso section has also been completed and commissioned by the Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia last week. Work is steadily ongoing on the Nkwanta-Kpassa and the OtiDamongo sections as well.”

Amongst the roads completed include 21-kilometres of asphaltic overlay of selected roads in Hohoe and Kpandu Municipalities. 15.6 kilometres of bitumen surfacing of Akwettey-Adaklu -Waya Road; 20 kilometres of Bitumen Surfacing of Yorkitikpo-KpoviadziTrepe Road; and the upgrading of 9.7-kilometre Liati Agbonyira -Fodome Ahor Feeder Road.

The Ghanaian News August 2022 19

“This year’s General Debate must be about providing hope”, concluded Mr. Guterres. “That hope can only come through the dialogue and debate that are the beating heart of the United Nations”.

Mr. Guterres, who is from Portugal, noted that the flooding covers an area three times the size of his homeland.

In typically uncompromising language, he lambasted the global response to the climate crisis as inadequate, unjust and, at its heart, a betrayal. “Whether it’s Pakistan, the Horn of Africa, the Sahel, small islands or Least Developed Countries, the world’s most vulnerable – who did nothing to cause this crisis –are paying a horrific price for decades of intransigence by big emitters”.

G20 must lead the way

The Secretary-General pointed out that, at a time of high geopolitical tensions, a lack of action to halt the climate crisis will have severe knockon effects, such as mass migration and increased instability.

‘Don’t flood the world today; don’t drown it tomorrow’, United Nations (UN) Chief implores leaders

Interacting with the President, the Volta Regional Director of the Ghana Highway Authority, Mr. Eric Dorsu said the 45-kilometre Asikuma-Have stretch is scheduled to be completed in September, 2023.

Road Projects in Volta Region

The 175-metre bridge on the Agbenoxoe-Dafor Feeder Road, which links communities between Kpandu, Dafor to Nkonya, has been completed.

The 696km stretch begins at Tema in the Greater Accra Region to Kulungugu

As hundreds of Heads of State and Government prepare to fly into New York for the General Debate of the new General Assembly, UN SecretaryGeneral António Guterres has called on them to bring hope to a fractured world, and increase efforts to fight the climate crisis.

Work on the 39.3km Asikuma Junction – Kpeve section of the Eastern Corridor Road is 26% complete and planned to be completed by December 2023. It is expected to be completed ahead of schedule. The contractor has also been instructed to work on the 6km gap between Kpeve and Have.

At the time of writing this was the report by NBC News:

Bringing the Gospel to our Community By Rev. Isaac De-Graft Takyi

“To what greater inspiration and counsel can we turn than to the imperishable truth to be found in this treasure house, the Bible?”

“With age does come experience and that can be a virtue if it is sensibly used.”

• “Everyone is our neighbour, no matter what race, creed or colour.”

“At Christmas, I am always struck by how the spirit of togetherness lies also at the heart of the Christmas story. A young mother and a dutiful father with their baby were joined by poor shepherds and visitors from afar. They came with their gifts to worship the Christ child.”

The Queen Elizabeth II made history in summer 2022 when she became the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. She died peacefully on Sept. 8, 2022, at the age of 96. As we look back on her astounding 70year reign, here are a few of her quotes with my personal lessons:

THE CHRISTIAN IN 2022: LESSONS FROM SOME QUOTES OF HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN ELIZABETH II

 Lesson 1:

3. SERVICE AND SERVANTHOOD

• “I have been aware all the time that my peoples, spread far and wide throughout every continent and ocean in the world, were united to support me in the task to which I have now been dedicated with such solemnity.”

• “Often a child’s helplessness and vulnerability bring out the best in us.”

• “When peace comes, remember it will be for us, the children of today, to make the world of tomorrow a better and happier place.”

• “We may hold different points of view, but it is in times of stress and difficulty that we most need to remember that we have much more in common than there is dividing us.”

Thousands filed past London landmarks and ceremonial guards and down a miles long line to view Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin as it rests in the revered Westminster Hall on Thursday. The line for those waiting to pay their respects as the queen lies in state until her funeral Monday stretched for 4 miles along the River Thames, with crowds flocking to the capital to say goodbye to the country’s longestreigning monarch. The reason for the long queue is as a result of one of the Queen’s quotes”I have to be seen to be believed.”.

“Therefore, I am sure that this, my Coronation, is not

the symbol of a power and a splendor that are gone but a declaration of our hopes for the future, and for the years I may, by God’s Grace and Mercy, be given to reign and serve you as your Queen.”

“I know just how much I rely on my own faith to guide me through the good times and the bad.”

• “Each day is a new beginning, I know that the only way to live my life is to try to do what is right, to take the long view, to give of my best in all that the day brings, and to put my trust in God.”

Reflect on your experiences and never repeat your mistakes. Know that you don’t know it all.

Have Faith in Christ. Live out your faith in Christ without shame. Live and Love like Christ.

“To what greater inspiration and counsel can we turn than to the imperishable truth to be found in this treasure house, the Bible?”

4. FAMILY, FRIENDS AND PEOPLE

By way of paying my respect to the Queen, I want to share some thoughts and lessons from her quotes that has been of value to me. I trust that it will be of great value to you.

“At the heart of our faith stand not a preoccupation with our own welfare and comfort but the concepts of service and of sacrifice as shown in the life and teachings of the one who made himself nothing, taking the very form of a servant.”

• “I have in sincerity pledged myself to your service, as so many of you are pledged to mine. Throughout all my life and with all my heart I shall strive to be worthy of your trust.”

“We lost the American colonies because we lacked

“My husband has quite simply been my strength and stay all these years, and I owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim.”

“No age group has a monopoly of wisdom, and indeed I think the young can sometimes be wiser than us. But the older I get, the more conscious I become of the difficulties young people have to face as they learn to live in the modern world.”

“I cannot lead you into battle. I do not give you laws or administer justice, but I can do something else—I can give my heart and my devotion to these old islands and to all the peoples of our brotherhood of nations.”

Leadership is service. Serve the people from your heart and with all your heart.

Urama highlighted that since the 1850s, countries have managed to transition away from coal, and used gas as a transition to cleaner energy. He also affirmed that Africa had great potential in terms of green investment opportunities that private sector, including banks, could tap into.

or “NDCs” are submitted by countries under the Paris Agreement of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. They represent climate action pledges that aim to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees C, to 1.5 degrees C, over pre-industrial levels.

Polio was largely eradicated from the US by vaccinations that began in 1955.By 1979, the US was declared polio-free.But according to New York officials, vaccination rates are too low in parts of the state. Friday’s emergency declaration is aimed at boosting flagging immunisation rates. There is no cure for polio, but it can be prevented by the vaccine. Mostly affecting children, the virus typically causes muscle weakness and paralysis, and in the most serious cases permanent disability and death.

Officials began monitoring wastewater in the state for poliovirus after an unvaccinated man in Rockland County, just north of New York City, contracted the virus in July - the first recorded case since 2013 - and suffered paralysis. The case was later genetically linked to paralytic polio found in a wastewater sample collected from nearby Nassau County in August.

Egyptian Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad highlighted Egypt’s National Strategy for Alignment for both climate mitigation and adaptation. She said it had five key pillars.

Health officials say wastewater samples in New York City and four adjacent counties have tested positive for a poliovirus that can cause paralysis. Although only one case has so far been confirmed, it was the first in the country in nearly a decade.
