On August 23, 2020 another Evacuation flight billed to be the last effort, brought about 42 Ghanaian-Canadians and other Nationals from Accra through Addis Ababa to Toronto by Ethiopian Airlines. The flight landed at Person Airport at 9:40 am with many of the passengers exhausted on arrival in Toronto due to the long flight hours,. Uncertainties on Returning to School in COVID Times Just after Labour Day, from September 8, 2020, schools in almost every Province across Canada will be re-opening their doors once again for students to either complete what was left of the previous school year’s work or begin new school year altogether. In some parts of the country, lower-level schools like Day Care Centers and Kindergartens have opened in the very first week of September.

Much as many children and students, young and old, are eager or excited to return to school, teachers, school administrators and most importantly parents, are very apprehensive and nervous about what awaits the children in the schools. The nervousness and apprehensions are all justified given the fact that to date, every information about the prevailing, raging and on-going COVID-19 pandemic is still couched in uncertainties.

From medical experts to politicians, everyone is just guessing what this pandemic entails and what it takes to “control”, “avoid”, or even get “treated” if one is unlucky to contract the virus. A lot of measures, especially on social distancing and the wearing of masks, as well as personal hygiene protocols have been announced for the schools as they re-open, but these have not been enough to calm the strained nerves of parents, students, teachers and school administrators.

At the Tertiary educational levels, most Universities across Canada are still closed and students will not be returning to the physical spaces on the university campuses. Most Universities are delivering their Fall sessions and courses virtually…on-line. These carry their own challenges. Although some College and University programs have been delivered virtually before the outbreak of this COVID-19 pandemic, this is perhaps the first ever time that almost the entire tertiary educational programs in almost all institutions in Canada are being delivered virtually. The uncertainties and apprehensions that have enveloped this new educational approach are overwhelming and nerve-wrecking, but there seems to be no other known alternatives at this stage.

Caught in all these uncertainties and apprehensions are prospective international students who were supposed to have arrived in this country from the summer to begin their studies in the Fall. Almost all of them are stuck in their places of habitual residences abroad waiting for clearance and permission to travel to Canada to begin their studies. There have been varying announcements and directives from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada to Higher educational institutions in Canada on what they should, and should not do with the international students who are required to be issued with Canadian Student Study Permits before they are even allowed to register for their programs and courses, not talking about when they will be allowed to travel into the country to begin their studies.

Mrs. Shirley Okai Acquah Tetteh passes away at 60 The sadden death of Mrs. Shirley Okai Acquah Tetteh a.k.a Araba Montreal is reported. She was 60 years. She passed away on Friday 14th August 2020 after short illness. She is survived by husband, John Okai Tetteh, 2 children and 2 grandchildren. Viewing is at Glendale Funeral Home, 1810 Albion Road, (Albion & Highway 27) Friday September 11. interment is at Glenview Memorial Gardens, 7541 Highway 50, Woodbridge followed by celebration of life at Aposles' Continuation Church Banquet Hall at 6pm on Saturday September 12, 2020.

Since most course deliveries are going to be online at least for the Fall Semester, many of such potential international students are expected to join these classes online, but they have been told that they would have to be issued with Student Study Permits by Canadian Missions abroad before they can start participating in the courses from their remote locations overseas.

The situation is still fluid and confusing.

We pray for all students and educational administrators and instructors caught in these tangled webs of uncertainties and apprehensions around school openings and participation. We hope that it will not be long for this confusion to subside for all students and school personnel to go about teaching and learning in comfort and safety.

Covid-19 forces GCAO Summer Batik Couture Workshop to go Virtual.

From Joe Kingsley Eyiah, Toronto Ten students between the ages of eleven and sixteen years as well as two teacher-volunteers from the Ghanaian community in Greater Toronto Area (GTA) were selected to participate in the Ghanaian-Canadian Association of Ontario (GCAO) virtual summer batik workshop during this year.

The workshop was sponsored by the Toronto Arts Council.

Last year, the same workshop was offered to beginners in our community in-person at the premises of the Apostles Continuation Church at 10 Belfield Road in Etobicoke-Toronto.

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the famous batik instructor, David Kibuuka could not travel from Uganda in Africa to Toronto for the workshop as he did last year. The workshop was therefore conducted on zoom with Uncle David teaching participants virtually from Kampala in Uganda each day (Monday to Friday) for the whole month of August, 2020. It

was co-ordinated by Lorena Andrade, a Toronto-based design instructor and Joe Kingsley Eyiah who is the Principal of the GCAO Homework Club in Toronto.

Materials for the workshop were sent to the homes of the participants and tutoring done during week days on a zoom link provided the GCAO. Participants painstakingly produced, at least, four creative (beautiful) batiks each.

The designs were later professionally photographed and photoshopped for printing. The printed fabrics would be sewn into pillows, cushions and bags for use.

An interim report by the Ontario Human Rights Commission finds Black people over-represented in charges and arrests Toronto Police Service (TPS) data from 2013 to 2017 reveals racial profiling and racial discrimination of Black persons by the Toronto Police

The Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) started a public inquiry, in November 2017, into racial profiling and discrimination of Black persons by the TPS, with the goal of building trust between the police and Black communities. After A Collective Impactwas released in December 2018, its first interim report, data showed that Black people were most likely to be fatally shot by the Toronto Police than White people or other racialized groups.

The Disparate Impact reports that Black people, particularly Black males are more likely to be proactively arrested, charged and subjected to police use of force in several police interactions.

Here are some key findings from the report:

• Black people were 3.9 times more likely to be charged compared to White people • Black people represent 8.8 per cent of Toronto’s population, however, represented 35.2 per cent of people involved in “out-ofsight” driving charges (i.e. driving without a valid insurance) which is only given after a stop is made or a vehicle’s license plate is checked, pointing to other motives.

• Black people were over-represented in use of force cases.

They represented 28.8 per cent of use of

force interactions, 36 per cent of shootings, 61.5 per cent of deadly encounters and 70 per cent of deaths caused by police shootings.

• Black people were 4.8 times more likely to be charged with obstructing justice • Black people were 4.3 times more likely to be charged with cannabis possession than their representation in the general population. In fact, this number does not match with what is known about the drug use within these Black communities.

• Black males only represent 4 per cent of Toronto’s population, however, represented

almost one-third, 29.1 per cent, of the charges.

• Black males’ charge rate was 4.5 times higher than the rate for White males • Black females’ charge rate was 2.4 times higher than the rate for White females An example of proactive policing is when an officer decides to stop and question an individual. While reactive policing is when an officer responds to a call for assistance. Black people were most likely to be involved in use of force cases around proactive policing. While White people were most likely to be involved in use of force cases around reactive policing. Factors like patrol zones in low and high-crime

neighborhoods, violent crime rates and average incomes are not controlling factors that explain the over-representation of Black people within use of force cases, rather race was an indicator of the police use of force.

Data reveals that a Black person was approximately 20 times more likely than a White person to be involved in a fatal shooting by the Toronto Police between 2013 to 2017.

When researchers assessed the relationship between race and patrol zones, Black people were over-represented in police use of force cases in both high and low-crime patrol zones.

Within police use of force interactions, Black people represented:

• 32.2 per cent of cases involving a police firearm • 36 per cent of cases involving police use of pepper spray • 36.7 per cent of cases involving police strikes • 41.1 per cent of cases involving police grounding/other force • 45.5 per cent of cases involving police Taser use • 57.1 per cent of cases involving a police dog.

The substance of both reports conclude that systemic racism and anti-Black racial bias exists within the Toronto Police Service and a call for action against such forms of racism was proposed by the OHRC. The OHRC stated that law enforcement is responsible for the safety and wellbeing of the Black communities as a collective. Therefore the OHRC calls on the TPS, TPSB and the City of Toronto to adapt a legally binding solution that reforms the culture of policing to eliminate systemic racism. The OHRC also calls on the Ontario government to create a framework that addresses this issue.

Provincial law must require police services to collect and examine race-based data across all policing activities in order for transparency and accountability to be prioritized.

Where necessary, the OHRC calls for the discipline of officers that actively decide to oppose.

FOCUS Behind the FACE MASK: Fear and Courage battle Reality as We Go Back to the Classroom

Remember the masked elders of Umuafia in Achebe’s book, ‘Things Fall Apart’?

And Fante ‘Kakamotobi’ (masqueradians) of the Central Region of Ghana? They all put ‘fear’ into the onlookers!

Well, time changes, they say, and situations also change.

No wonder, situations have drastically changed with the ‘advent’ of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Going back to school this year has adversely affected by COVID-19.

Many governments around the globe have been struggling to make their schools safe enough to return to. Parents and teacher unions have been apprehensive of the inadequate provisions made by their governments to create the needed safe environment at our schools.

Some governments have given parents the options of sending their children to school in-person or keeping them home to study online.

For now, I want to draw attention briefly to the psychological warfare associated with wearing of masks in the classroom. It is mandatory for all teachers and students (Grade 4 and above) to wear face masks in their classrooms.

Obviously, there are no easy choices in pandemic. Wearing face mask is one of them.

Is the coup making a comeback in Africa? endorsed at the ballot box. When democracy is so blatantly fixed, it becomes plausible for soldiers to seize power in the name of restoring — not rupturing — the democratic contract.

Days ago, soldiers in Mali overthrew the unpopular president, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, completing the west African country’s second coup in eight years. In Sudan, in April last year, after months of massive protests, the Sudanese military toppled the 30-year dictatorship of Omar al-Bashir. In 2017, a faction of Zimbabwe’s military ousted Robert Mugabe, who had ruled and misruled the former southern African breadbasket for 37 years.

This is not a return to the past. Before a wave of African democratisation in the 1990s, coups were as common as military dark glasses. Now they are far less frequent, and no longer acceptable in polite circles. Coups are routinely condemned by elected leaders (who rather fancy staying in power) and by institutions such as the African Union.

That is why, in all three recent “military assisted transitions” — as the perpetrators would have them — soldiers have bent over backwards to deny that a coup has taken place at all.

In Zimbabwe, the spokesman for the generals who toppled Mugabe proclaimed on television: “We wish to make it absolutely clear that this is not a military takeover” — a statement somewhat undermined by the armoured vehicles on the streets. Instead of executing Mugabe or bundling him on a plane into exile, he was placed under house arrest until he saw the wisdom of resignation.

Something similar happened last month in Mali. The president was arrested and persuaded to resign. As he put it in a broadcast: “Do I really have a choice?”

With a gun to your head, the answer is generally no. In Sudan, the nocoup fiction was more convincing. The toppling of Bashir was preceded by waves of protests in which millions of Sudanese in dozens of cities took to the streets demanding he must go.

The generals who shoved

Bashir out, many of them former close allies, presented their actions as the culmination of a popular revolution.

That is a second feature of recent coups. They are popular, at least initially.

Last two week’s putsch in Mali was foreshadowed by demonstrations, including by impoverished widows of soldiers who died fighting the jihadist insurgency.

The president had been elected by a landslide in 2013. But by 2020, most Malians were weary of a government that had failed to bring either economic progress or peace.

In Zimbabwe, the overthrow of Mugabe was more popular still. As he tendered his “resignation”, hundreds of thousands took to the streets of Harare to celebrate, albeit sanctioned by the generals and supplied with anti-Mugabe placards. In Sudan, in scenes of jubilation, huge crowds chanted the praises of their “people’s uprising”.

Paradoxically, the return of the coup is the flipside of more entrenched democratic norms.

Across the continent, regular elections are now standard. But leaders have become adept at manipulating the democratic process and at tweaking the constitution to extend their rule. Nic Cheeseman, a political scientist at the University of Birmingham, wrote the manual in 2018, How To Rig an Election.

Both Mugabe and Bashir were experts. Four years before he was dragged away in handcuffs, 94 per cent of Sudanese voters supposedly endorsed Bashir’s presidency.

Many of the continent’s “longest-serving” leaders, including Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni (34 years in power) and Cameroon’s Paul Biya (45 years and counting) have been periodically, if dubiously,

Recent coups come amid a strengthening of civil society. An increasingly urban, social-media savvy and politicised young population has come into conflict with often ageing leaders who cannot meet their aspirations. Protests have sometimes catalysed peaceful change. In Ethiopia, years of demonstrations forced the resignation of one prime minister in 2018 and the selection by an embattled ruling elite of Abiy Ahmed, the Nobel Peace Prize-winner, as a hoped-for acceptable alternative. But protests have also emboldened the military to act.

Popular unrest formed the backdrop to armycontrolled transitions in Algeria last year, as well as in Mali and Sudan.

It must be acknowledged that coups in Africa are now rare. Many countries have robust democracies.

Ghana, once used to military rule, has held seven back-to-back democratic elections since 1992.

Nations from Senegal to South Africa have no history of military takeover. Even Nigeria, once a byword for coups, has been democratic for more than two decades.

Still, there are dangers.

One coup tends to lead to another. Mali is on its second and there are already rumours of disgruntled army officers gunning for Mugabe’s brutal and ineffective successor, Emmerson Mnangagwa. And, once in power, soldiers may get a taste for it. Ominously, Mali’s putschists are talking about a threeyear transition. In Sudan, civilians are part of a sovereign council that is supposed to organise multi-party elections in 2022. But the leadership includes generals with unsavoury pasts, and there can be many a slip between cup and lip. “We have to call a spade a spade,” says Mr Cheeseman. “If the military takes over, even if they don’t shoot the leader, that’s still a coup.”

Impact of the Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement on Refugee Protection Claimants coming from U.S. The Safe Third Country Agreement was signed between Canada and the United States on December 5, 2002 and it became effective on December 29, 2004.

Under the Agreement, refugee claimants are required to request for refugee protection in the first safe country they arrive. The Agreement, as it is now, only applies to refugee claimants who are seeking entry to Canada from the U.S. and vice versa at Canada-U.S. land border crossings, by train or at airports under certain conditions.

The U.S. is the only country that is designated as a Safe Third Country by Canada under Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA). It should however be noted that on December 14, 2012, the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism of Canada came up with an initial list of countries whose citizens will have their asylum claims in Canada expedited for processing because those countries are, generally, not considered refugee-producing countries.

Despite the objectives of the Agreement to curtail inflow of refugee claimants through the borders of Canada and U.S., provisions are made for some refugee claimants coming through the U.S. to qualify to seek refuge in Canada if certain conditions are met.

Refugee claimants from U.S. who have family members in Canada are granted exceptions to make such applications.

The family members may be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada.

They may also be protected persons under Canadian immigration legislation or family members who have made claims for refugee status in Canada that have been accepted by the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB)

or family members who are holders of valid Canadian work permit or holders of valid Canadian study permit or a family member who is over 18 years old and has a claim for refugee protection that has been referred to the IRB for determination. Not every person related to you could be recognized as a family member under the CanadaU.S. Agreement. Recognition of family membership under the Agreement is confined to a spouse, a legal guardian, a child, a mother or father, a sister or brother, a grandfather or grandmother, a grandchild, an uncle or aunt, a nephew or niece, a common-law partner or a same-sex spouse.

The other category of exceptions under the Safe Third Country Agreement is unaccompanied minors.

This covers persons under 18 years of age who are not accompanied by their mother, father or legal guardian, who have neither a spouse nor a common-law partner, and who do not have a mother, a father or a legal guardian in Canada or the United States.

Refugee claimants generally

referred to as “document holders” may also be saved by the exceptions clause.

This category embraces any refugee claimant from the U.S. to Canada who holds a valid Canadian visa (other than a transit visa), a valid work permit, or a valid study permit.

Any refugee claimant from the U.S. to Canada who holds a travel document or other valid admission document issued by Canada or claimants who are not required to get a temporary resident visa to enter Canada but require a U.S.-issued visa to enter the U.S. may also benefit from the exception.

Lastly, the Safe Third Country Agreement may grant exceptions to refugee applicants from the U.S. side of the border if public interest so dictates. This last category which may be referred to as “Public Interest Exceptions” may include a refugee claimant who has been charged with or convicted of an offence that could subject him or her to the death penalty in the U.S. or in a third country.

Unfortunately however, this category of exceptions has a very narrow scope because a refugee claimant may be

found inadmissible in Canada on grounds of criminality and other serious violations of human and international rights.

The entire Agreement is under debate. A Federal court justice has recently indicated that elements of the law underpinning the Safe Third Country Agreement violate constitutional guarantees of life, liberty and security. The decision is currently awaiting federal government response.

Canadian refugee advocates have been fighting the Agreement vigorously arguing the U.S. is not always a safe country for people fleeing persecution. But not until the controversy surrounding the Agreement is resolved, the Safe Third Country Agreement governs acceptance of refugee claimants from U.S to Canada.

Racism Almost Bursts the NBA Bubble

The NBA season officially resumed on July 30 after being suspended in March due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. However, it was more than the virus that almost threatened the regular season. th

The brutal murder of George Floyd at the hands of Derek Chauvin in Minnesota, where a video recording captured him mercilessly kneeling on Floyd’s neck for an astonishing 8 minutes and 46 seconds, enraged not just African-Americans, but the world. The level of vitriol led to nationwide protests and riots across America. How could a law enforcement officer get away with murdering George Floyd and not face immediate punishment?

Sports is a form of escapism, where people immerse themselves in it to get away from the harsh realities of life. However, the cries and calls for justice were too loud to ignore. The NBA, a predominantly black league (approximately 81.1%) inadvertently found itself front and centre of this tragedy.

Stephen Jackson, a former NBA player was good friends with George Floyd, and affectionately referred to him as his twin. The murder of his friend forced him to speak out against police brutality and racial discrimination. This domino effect led to countless players, from Kyrie Irving, to LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, and many others to publicly take a stand.

Once the national dialogue has gained momentum, there were growing calls from former and current NBA players to cancel the season in order to not take away from the momentum and national dialogue surrounding racism in America. Kyrie Irving, the Vice-President of Players Union, was primarily pushing for the cancellation of the season. The NBA found itself with a dilemma. COVID-19 was not the only virus they had to tackle, but the virus of racism

that’s plagued America since its inception found itself resurfacing.

Since then, the NBA worked with the Players Union and players themselves to try and find a solution that could not only allow for the season to continue, but send a message to the players they’re also committed to the fight against racial discrimination. The NBA was able to work out the logistics and created a bubble environment in Orlando, Florida to resume their season.

As teams began trickling down to the bubble, there was more at stake than declaring a 2020 NBA Champion. The Toronto Raptors arrived on a team bus with the phrase Black Lives Matter boldly and visibly plastered. That same slogan appeared on the court, large enough for the global audience to see.

Players were committed to using their platform to raise awareness on racial injustices in America.

They wore Black Lives Matter shirts, kneeled during the national anthem, and mentioned the name of Breonna Taylor every time they were asked questions postgame.

On the surface it seems that the bubble was fulfilling its purpose. The games were entertaining, the players were getting their message across and there were zero reported cases of the Coronavirus. NBA basketball was back and the playoffs were underway.

When all seemed right again, the virus struck again.

No, not COVID. Racism. In Kenosha, Wisconsin, Jacob Blake was shot 7 times in the back by police, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. The tragic shooting was captured on video and immediately became widespread. Naturally, the news reached the NBA bubble and players were equally distraught and outraged.

The Toronto Raptors and Boston Celtics, who were set to face each other in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, floated the idea of a potential boycott in response to the shooting. However, it was the Milwaukee Bucks who made the leap, and didn’t take the court against the Orlando Magic for game 5 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. This led to a widespread boycott of other teams refusing to take the court. With the players standing in solidarity, the NBA was once again in jeopardy.

This led to meetings taking place amongst the players and owners, trying to find common ground on a shaky surface. The players were adamant about the need for change, and they required tangible action items to deliver that change. After two days of meetings between owners, players and the union, the players sent a clear message to ownership and the league that they need to stop being observers of players trying to deliver social justice and to get in the game.

After deliberating, all parties involved came to an agreement that will see the players take the court again, but more importantly see the league and owners take a more active role in the fight against racial discrimination and social justice.

This has been an unprecedented year with unique challenges. While the solutions are complex, it’s apparent that things can’t and won’t be the same.

It can no longer be business as usual, and the NBA players made it apparent. While the NBA bubble nearly burst, it appears that it was a false alarm and it remains in place to bring about change. Only time will tell.

Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO). RECO doesn’t say anything like filing a bankruptcy or consumer proposal means the license will be ceased or something.

So, if someone has such questions that they might lose their license or something. Then it is just a piece of false news that someone has spread. And the main government of this thing RECO doesn’t

say anything like that.

So, don’t believe in such things.

There will be no termination of license even the person has filed bankruptcy. One can have their real estate license even when they file bankruptcy. And nothing will happen to their licenses. Neither they will lose their job or something. And it is a government law that prohibits all

the government and private companies from terminating their employees. One can continue what they were doing in their life.

Things to know before filing bankruptcy if someone has a real estate license If someone is going to file their bankruptcy and if that person owns a real estate license. Then

they have to inform the registrar’s office within five days of applying for

bankruptcy or consumer proposal. And these documents are needed

• Proper reason for filing the bankruptcy with signed and dated • Form 69: Bankruptcy assignment • Form 79: Statement of all the possession and liabilities • Form 65: Monthly expenditure statement • Form 85: Discharge certificate but only if it is applicable These are documents that will be needed in the registrar’s office.

A person can apply for real estate license after filing bankruptcy or not As the RECO says that bankruptcy doesn’t prevent anyone from losing their license or registering for a license in RECO. So, a person can apply for the real estate license even that person has filed bankruptcy or not. But the person needs to disclose that they have applied for bankruptcy. Only after proper checking one can get their license.

Just disclose each and everything Before registration, a person needs to disclose the proper reason for filing their bankruptcy, credit score, and a financial image. And the RECO official will take a complete check on those things. So, that they can know the person will be able to perform the job or not.

GCAO Receives ~$100,000 Red Cross grant to expand existing programs for social intervention and virtual programs to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 in our community The Canadian Red Cross Society has granted the Ghanaian-Canadian Association of Ontario (GCAO) with $99844.00 to enhance the services GCAO currently provides the community to mitigate the impact of COVID-19.

The money will help increase our capacity to reach our seniors, children, youth, women, frontline workers, and the vulnerable in order to provide services such as virtual educational support, health & wellness, food and personal protection equipment.

As a community, this funding is timely for us to do more to alleviate the impact of COVID-19.

Often, they condemn guns and gang violence in our communities, assure us their preparedness to fight the canker. But guns and gang violence remain a source of worry for many residents presently.

Some witnesses and victims who are living in fear of suspected gangs and hoodlums are getting tired of verbal assurance of fighting the ongoing criminal activities in their communities and therefore ask, “FIGHTING GUNS AND GANGS, WHO’S FIGHT?” Chorological report shows Mount Olive Drive for the past four years running has recorded five guns and gang violence that in some cases took live[s].

The Old Testament is full of passages about the importance of raising children to love and worship God (Deuteronomy 6:7, Proverbs 22:6).

Parents are reminded that children are a heritage from the Lord (Psalm 127:3–5). And children are instructed to obey the instruction of their parents (Exodus 20:12). Jesus used children to demonstrate how to enter the kingdom of God.

He warned, “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come, “parents, clergy!”

But among all what that applies to us now is Mathew 19:13 where Jesus called and the children were brought to him and he blessed them. So now it is our responsibility as parents to engage our children and youth and teach them how to live moral, responsible lives and their religious faith life which despises crime to please God. The politicians, government officials,

policy makers and the security experts must be told in their faces that never can they fight guns and gangs fiscally and physically alone without the support of parents and the religious leaders.

Therefore we must go back to the drawing board and ensure that all stake holders including parents and the clergy, imams, rabbis and all other religious leaders are constituted to find a common solution and together with the security experts work to solve this canker in our country.

The flight was organized through the joint efforts of three of our community Travel Agents, Micheal Ansu of Supreme Travels, Kwame Agyemang of Royal African Travel Services and Nana Osei of Finton Travel Ltd. As it has always been the case, these local Travel agents saw the need for those stranded Ghanaian Canadians scrambling to return to Canada. Most of the passengers have similar stories on how and why they were stranded in Ghana for such long periods of time.

Frankly Speaking New Covid-19 Arrival Protocols at Accra’s Kotoka Airport way off mark Need immediate review!!

By Prof. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, Manitoba Since the global outbreak of COVID-19, known by its other “guy” name of “Corona Virus”, Ghana, under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, has been hailed globally for exhibiting effective leadership in the management of the virus in the country. The leadership that the President and his government have shown, and the actions taken have included the swift closure of its borders: land, air and sea, and the regular engagement with the general population updating them on measures that government has been taking to ameliorate the effects of the virus outbreak.

The measures have included very harsh measures when needed, which involved the total lockdown of the most populous population centers in the country for a number of weeks to contain the spread of the virus when some cases of COVID-19 were detected in those population centers in the country.

And the most telling, and admirable of these measures were the social interventions that the government introduced to cushion the hardships among the population, especially the most vulnerable who were given free meals at some point during the lockdowns. The mitigation measures have also included the suspension of water and electricity bills: in effect the offering of free water and electricity to the general population for six months.

Overall, President Akufo Addo and his government have done a yeoman’s job in the management of the COVID-19 outbreak in Ghana.

My current serious concerns, and I believe they are the concerns of many Ghanaians in the Diaspora and in Ghana as well, revolve around the latest measures contained in the President’s 16th address to the nation on measures taken on the COVID-19. Let’s go way back to where the President began this COVID-19 control journey in March 2020. In his very first broadcast to the nation in March 2020 when Ghana had recorded only five cases, President Akufo Addo, in trying to show that the disease was foreign-born and imported, emphasized that the first two cases recorded in the country came from “outside”, from foreign-based travelers who came into the country. In view of that the government then ordered a mandatory quarantine, at government

This characterization of the first detected cases of COVID-19 in Ghana by the President set the tone, albeit wrongly, for Ghanaians to label the “disease” as “Aburokyirefuo yade3” (foreigners’ disease). This immediately set in emotion hostilities and stigmatization of any foreign-based Ghanaian or non-Ghanaian who had arrived in the country in the previous weeks and months. Some people were reporting the presence of such “Aburokyirefuo” to the Police to be picked up as if anyone who had traveled into the country was contaminated with COVID-19.

This hostility and stigmatization attitude was extended to residents of the major population centers of Accra, Kasoa, Tema, Ashiaman, Kumasi and Obuasi when those population centers were locked down as a result of outbreaks of COVID-19 cases there. Residents of these Cities and towns who traveled to their home towns and villages were met with open hostilities because people in other parts of the country interpreted the government’s measures on these population centers to mean that “all” of the residents in these cities and towns were all “sick” of COVID-19. The President and some members of his government tried to educate the general population not to stigmatize people from the locked-down population centers nor show same to those that had been diagnosed of the virus. It was too late.

The stigmatization had stuck in the minds of people!

Then came the President’s latest engagement and address to the nation on Sunday August 30, 2020 in which he summed up the progress the government had made so far in the COVID-19 fight. A very important measure announced by the President which was

Two things emerged from this address that have given real cause for concern for many Ghanaians in the Diaspora as well as tourists who wish to visit the country. The President announced that ALL travelers into the country by air should undergo a COVID-19 test in their places of habitual residence, not more than 72 hours before flying into Ghana.

And he said that Airlines particularly have been warned NOT to carry any passenger into the countrywho doesn’t produce a negative COVID-19 test result (or certificate). And that any Airline that brings any such passenger will be severely sanctioned! Then he went further to announce that despite carrying a negative COVID-19 testing certificate, arriving passengers will be compelled to undergo another test on arrival at the Kotoka Airport at a whooping cost of US$150 which will produce the results in 15 minutes.

The second disturbing part of the President’s address on August 30 was that he returned to his assertion and characterization of the COVID-19 as “Aburokyirefuo” (foreigners) disease at the end of the address, referring to his first broadcast to the nation in March in which he stressed that the disease was only imported into the country by outsiders.

This was very unfortunate.

This is what the President said: “It has been well-established that the very first cases of COVID-19 in Ghana were imported into our shores. We are determined to make sure this scenario does not recur.

The commitment to ensuring that the gradual easing of restrictions, including the reopening of our airports, does not lead to the importation or resurgence of the virus into our country, is firmly in place.

That is why the following measures have been taken and duly communicated to airlines wishing to resume flights to Ghana”.

The import of this strong statement which does not hold up with the data and science to date is that the disease in Ghana is still Aburokyirefuo disease. And that we will punish them for it. And this

is the reason why people in Ghana do not want to respect the government-announced COVID-19 control protocols like wearing masks or social distancing. Afterall it is Aburokyirefuo yade3. If we require that people should get tested and be declared “clean” and “fit-for-travel” to the cleaner country of Ghana at most 72 hours before arriving, why do we have to compel them to undergo another test, whose reliability and results are, to all intents and purposes, suspect? And why should we compel the same travelers to pay so much for such a-notproven test?

Significantly, the Nogouchi Medical Center at the University of Ghana, Legon where most of the COVID-19 tests are carried out, has come out openly to question the reliability of the governmentannounced tests at the airport on arrival. Even more disturbing is the fact that even the World Health Organization (WHO) has not yet identified any such test anywhere in the world that can produce a fullproof result in 15 minutes as the President and government of Ghana are claiming.

We see this as another moneygrabbing measure on travelers, especially Aburokyirefuo no. This idea and attitude of hostility and stigmatization of Aburokyirefuo noin Ghana must stop. The government can do the following: If any arriving passenger at Ghana’s Airport is carrying a COVID-19 negative test certificate as required by the government, that person should NOT be compelled to undergo another test and be robbed of as much as US$150.

Secondly, if the government insists on testing people at the

airport on arrival at Kotoka airport, then such persons should not be required to have taken the test before arriving in Ghana, and the Airlines should NOT be sanctioned for carrying such passengers.

Thirdly, the testing fee, for whatever reasons, is too expensive and should be reduced drastically to no more than US$50 or its Ghanaian Cedi equivalent.

This exercise should not be a revenue-generating measure or exercise championed by the government.

One thing is for sure: knowing what we have gone through at the hands of officials at Ghana’s airports over the years, the efficiency or honesty surrounding these tests and the accompanying fee will last no more than two weeks. Very soon, arriving passengers will be accosted as soon as they get off the plane, and before they reach the testing centers, by a new breed of Goro Boyswho will try and scam the arriving passengers for money (lower than the official fees) to produce negative tests results for them. Mark my words: we have seen them before and they will happen again. Any government measure aimed at generating money in Ghana quickly becomes an avenue for a few unscrupulous persons to enrich themselves.

We hope President Akufo Addo and his government will heed the loud call in Ghana and around the world, including mine, to quickly adhere to the suggestions above especially to disabuse the minds of Ghanaians in the Diaspora that they are constantly been stigmatized and being seen as otherswhenever they visit the Land of their Birth.

As if delivering a soliloquy, she seemed lost in introspection. I thought of engaging her, but my last experience with a stranger at the new Jersey park got me reserved.

Close to 30mins i kept staring at her, while gathering up courage to approach her.

everything okay with you? I asked. “No,” she responded, “When will life come back to normal” she asked. Can you please give me few minutes of your time? I want to talk to someone, she added.

She then introduced herself as Mary Jane a 68 year old educationist , she lost her husband of 41years through COVID.

Her two sons who live far in Australia cannot come

Mary Jane is just one of the many cases of the world’s population, that are psychologically distressed due to covid 19.

People who have lost their loved ones, to those who have lost their jobs and investments, etc.

Are faced with mental conditions, which have amplified in recent times. While COVID 19 patients and their families are also at a high risk to develop depression and anxiety.

Students are obviously not left out. Those i

have engaged with, complained bitterly about challenges they face studying at home.

Though restrictions on corona virus are gradually being lifted, it is important to note that the trauma can last long even after the pandemic has abated, which to a large extent, affect our general wellbeing.

How then can the rippling effect of the pandemic be mitigated? I thought of the following.

First, learn to make time for others.

Though we are in a period of social distancing, phone calls or video chats can help you and your loved ones feel socially connected, less lonely or isolated.

You will be amazed by the lives you can save by a simple text message.

Secondly, learn to be a giver. I always say if the world had come to an end due to corona virus, of what importance would the huge sums of money and food people are hoarding be? As the saying goes..Sharing is caring . Aspire to be a symbol of hope for the wary.

And finally, personally take care of your mental health. Seek professional help if you are feeling overwhelmed with sadness, depression, anxiety, loneliness, fear and anger.

Know What He Says, Believe What He Says, then Know Who You Are I used to think I had so much of my Lord and my God. I used to think I can stock up on Him to keep me going for weeks without having to go daily to fill up. Man, was I wrong! We need Him daily, and momently.

Allow me to be preachy with this piece because it’s taken me quite a while to decide what to share with us.

God is my Source and I believe in Him. Jesus is my Lord, and it is through Him I get to God. I am simply sharing my faith with you and not imposing any ‘religion on you’. The Christian walk is not a religion to me; it is the relationship believers have with God through Jesus, and that is what I am talking about.

With all that is going on in our world now, people are calling on all sorts of ‘things’ and gods.

We are all expectantly looking forward to when our answered prayers of our blessed world will be restored to us.

In the meantime, we are also dealing with our individual issues and affairs that we need personalized or call it customized solutions to.

We are all fighting our various battles one way or another. Some are dealing with illnesses and sicknesses of all kinds. Some are dealing with their financial crises. Some are dealing with their immigration mayhem. Some are still sorting out their relationship’s issues – be it marriage relationships, family relationships, or parent-child relationship.

Some are dealing with their infertility issues.

Some are struggling with work, job, or business issues. Yet, some are battling their self-image, self-worth, self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-value concerns.

People are fighting all

kinds of battles, and some are even struggling with multiple of these.

So, my friend, be kind to people you come across. Stop adding to the problems people are already dealing with, and be gently, kind, and friendly! It doesn’t cost you any $$ to be nice!

What am I saying? If we could solve our problems, help ourselves, and sorted out our issues, imagine what a world we’d be in. it would be such a problem free world and we would not need God, but that is not the case. God is our help and He is helping us, and He will continually help us. We can trust in Him. We can count on Him. I find that when we truly live life with Him, it takes the pressure off. It brings peace that truly surpasses all understanding. It is one thing to do life with God, and it’s another thing and to another level to truly live life with God. It makes a huge difference to live intentionally with Him – it’s such a big deal and makes life so much better! We are more than just the sum of every high and low we go through or experience. When we truly live with Him mentally and spiritually, His Spirit and Presence in us reminds us again and again of who we are, because we need to know, and we need that reminder. There is so much going on around us that if we are not constantly reminded, the truth of our lives will slide, and we’ll forget our identity – at least that’s what I find.

Sometimes, when I cannot feel it, I hear Him say I am loved, and when He loves me, that is more than enough. Three weeks back, I felt so sick I have never felt like that in my life. At a point I thought I was going

to die. I am thankful to be hear today. In the moment I heard him say I am strong, although I felt weak. Sometimes, we even feel weak mentally, but He says we are strong! When we feel short and lack in our ability or capacity, He says we are well able!

I have felt falling short and have heard Him say He holds me! When we connect with Him and we directly hear His reassuring Words, it is easier to believe. And I believe! Sometimes, we do not have the time to go and dig into the Bible for reassurance, or we don’t have the chance to have anyone share any encouraging or inspiring words with us.

However, one thing is for sure, and that is His Spirit and His Presence is ALWAYS close by or nearer than we think. So, my friend, believe! Start by establishing a deep relationship with God! He loves us more thank we can ever know in our lifetime on earth.

I bet some of us have had times when the people we thought we could count on have let us down! When that happens, we may be shattered. Then we tend to feel insecure. When we feel disappointed, we tend to think what others think of us. It is especially in those times, the only thing that matters is everything that God thinks of us. And, in every single moment of our lives, God thinks only good of us!

We have all come though our past and no one holds the future. I love planning and believe in big dreams and goals and visions and all of that. However, tomorrow and the future is held only by God. He is the only One who can guarantee the future. All we have and are assured of is NOW, and the only

thing that matters now is what He thinks of us.

What others think of us (especially, negative things) are worthless!

When we have that deep relationship with Him, we will find our true worth and identity. And when we begin to have that shift, everything else shifts in our life. It begins with our mind and the decision to live life intentionally with Him. When we find this haven in Him, it changes the whole game of life.

We will not feel the need to belong to any group or association and we will still be okay.

Friendships are great and vital. However, if it’s not helpful, what is the use!

I encourage you to seek God though Jesus. Life is so much better with Him. Imagine women living from this place and teaching this value to the children! Be encouraged with these Scriptures: Heb 13:6, Heb 10:35-36, Heb 4:16, 2 Cor 12:9, 1 Cor 2:3-5, Eph 3:12, Phil 4:13, Phil 1:6, Is 41:10, Is 40:31, Is 32:17, 2 Chronicles 32:8, Proverbs 3:25-26, Ps 139:13-14, Jer 17:7, Joshua 1:9.

I am happy to pray with us if it’s okay. God, our Father, we thank You for Who You are to us. We thank You for choosing us and calling us and putting Your name on us. Thank You for Your

love and grace and all we enjoy from You. Thank You for Your Spirit and Your presence. We ask that You will lead and guide us to know what You say and believe what You say about us and to truly get to know who we are because of what we know from You. We commit ourselves to You and cast all our cares upon You. We ask that You meet everyone at the point of their need and expectations and let our lives radiate Your glory and Your power. Help us live in joy always and to enjoy the peace You give us. Save our world and secure our future here on earth and eternally with You. In Jesus Name we pray. Amen.

Herbal supplements: What to know before you buy

Get the facts before you buy.

Echinacea to prevent colds. Ginkgo to improve memory. Flaxseed to lower cholesterol. The list of herbal remedies goes on and on.

Herbal supplements, sometimes called botanicals, aren’t new.

Plants have been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years.

However, herbal supplements haven’t been subjected to the same scientific scrutiny and aren’t as strictly regulated as medications.

For example, makers of herbal supplements don’t have to get approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before putting their products on the market.

Yet some supplements

herbal —

including products labeled as “natural” — have drug-like effects that can be dangerous.

So it’s important to do your homework and investigate potential benefits and side effects of herbal supplements before you buy. And be sure to talk with your doctor, especially if you take medications, have chronic health problems, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Are herbal supplements safe?

Herbal supplements are regulated by Health Canada as drugs or as foods. They fall under a category called dietary supplements. The rules for dietary supplements are as follows: •

Manufacturers don’t have to seek Health Canada approval before putting dietary supplements on the market. In

addition, companies can claim that products address a nutrient deficiency, support health or are linked to body functions — if they have supporting research and they include a disclaimer that Health Canada hasn’t evaluated the claim.

•

Manufacturers must follow good manufacturing practices to ensure that supplements are processed consistently and meet quality standards.

These regulations are intended to keep the wrong ingredients and contaminants, such as pesticides and lead, out of supplements, as well as make sure that the right ingredients are included in appropriate amounts.

•

Once a dietary supplement is on the market , Health Canada is responsible for monitoring its safety.

If Health Canada finds a product to be unsafe, it can take action against the manufacturer or distributor or both, and may issue a warning or require that the product be removed from the market.

These regulations provide assurance that herbal supplements meet certain quality standards and that Health Canada can intervene to remove dangerous products from the market.

The rules do not, however, guarantee that herbal supplements are safe for anyone to use. Because many supplements contain active ingredients that have strong effects in the body, these products can pose unexpected risks. For example, taking a combination of herbal supplements or using supplements together with prescribed medications could lead to harmful, even lifethreatening results. For this reason, it’s important to talk with your doctor before using herbal supplements.

How do you know what’s in an herbal supplement?

Health Canada requires that the following information be included on the labels of all herbal supplements: The name of the herbal supplement, the name and address of manufacturer or distributor; a complete list of ingredients — either in the Supplement Facts panel or listed beneath it; serving size, amount and active ingredient If you don’t understand something on an herbal supplement’s label, ask your pharmacist or the distributor for an explanation. If you are not sure check with your doctor.

How do you know if herbal supplements’ claims are true?

Look for objective, research-based information to evaluate a product’s claims. To get reliable information about a particular supplement: •

Ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Even if they don’t know about a specific supplement, they may be able to point you to the latest medical guidance about its uses and risks.

Contact the manufacturer.

If you have questions about a specific product, call the manufacturer or distributor. Ask to talk with someone who can answer questions, such as what data the company has to substantiate its products’ claims.

Who shouldn’t use herbal supplements?

If you have health issues, it’s essential that you talk with your doctor before trying herbal supplements. In fact, in some high-risk situations, your doctor will likely recommend that you avoid herbal supplements altogether.

It’s especially important that you talk to your doctor before using herbal supplements if: •

You’re taking prescription or overthe-counter (OTC) medications. Some herbs can cause serious side effects when mixed with

Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid herbal preparations at all costs. Medications that may be safe for you as an adult may be harmful to your fetus or your breastfeeding infant. As a general rule, don’t take any medications — prescription, OTC or herbal — when you’re pregnant or breast-feeding unless your doctor approves.

People who are undergoing or have recently had surgery should avoid herbal preparations . Many herbal supplements can affect the success of surgery.

Some may decrease the effectiveness of anesthetics or cause dangerous complications, such as bleeding or high blood pressure. Tell your doctor about any herbs you’re taking or considering taking as soon as you know you need surgery.

As a rule of thumb, do not mix herbal medicines with prescription medications or medications that you buy over the counter. Be ware of herbal medications that claim to “Cure” different diseases.

Remember, in life there are no short cuts and easy/quick fixes may lead to trouble.

The world has gone through a lot of changes since covid-19 as we are all witnesses of. In the face of the uncertainties we are all offered opportunities of choices to make. We can, for example choose to be afraid and not do anything or put ourselves together and keep moving forward.

In this article I will want to admonish each of us based on our position and believe in God to make the decision to trust God in all of this and to obey Him for His best for us.

God has great things to release to us so we should reach up to him because of, but not limited to the following benefits based on the acronym R.E.A.C.H U. P: • REVELATION:Is the revealing or disclosing of some form of truth or knowledge through communication with a deity or other supernatural entity or entities. The belief that knowledge of God and of spiritual matters can be discovered through supernatural means, such as miracles or the scriptures—a disclosure of God’s truth through means other than through reason.

Pray and ask God “Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law. Psalm 119:18.

• EFFECTIVENESS: adjective. adequate to accomplish a purpose; producing the intended or expected result: Some common synonyms of effective are effectual, efficacious, and efficient.

While all these words mean “producing or capable of producing a result,” effective stresses the actual production of or the power to produce an effect that get noticed in a positive way.

Pray and ask God to help you to “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 • ANOINTING: Anointing is the ritual act of pouring aromatic oil over a person’s head or entire body. Smear or rub with oil, typically as part of a religious ceremony.

The primary purpose of anointing with the holy anointing oil was to sanctify, to set the anointed person or object apart as qodesh, or “holy” (Exodus 30:29).

Originally, the oil was used exclusively for the priests and the Tabernacle articles, but its use was later extended to include kings (I Samuel 10:1).

Among emotion researchers, it is defined as the feeling that arises when you are confronted with another’s suffering and feel motivated to relieve that suffering. Compassion is a concern for the welfare and well-being of others.

Compassion gives us the ability to understand someone else’s situation and the desire to take action to improve their lives.

Pray and ask God saying: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with

Proverbs 12:2: A good man obtains favor from the Lord, but a man of evil devices he condemns God’s supernatural favour is not based on your personality, looks or background but on the Word of God and your belief that He will accomplish whatever He says in your life Walking in the favor of God does not mean that you will not have trouble or face challenges at one point or another in your life, What it means is that though facing all these things, you will clearly see God’s hand in your life as you continue to believe and to put all your trust and faith in him.

• PROSPERITY:Is not about attaining wealth or living a life of luxury, but about thriving as the person God created you to be. True prosperity is about living a life fully engaged with the principles laid out in the Bible. Aa successful, flourishing, or thriving condition.

FIFA COVID-19 Relief Fund: Clubs will be made to properly account for money – GFA Top officials of the Ghana Football Association have told GhanaWeb.com that every club and stakeholder who will benefit from the FIFA COVID-19 Relief Fund will be made to properly account for their portion of the money.

This, the GFA says, will ensure that club owners and administrators do not misappropriate funds brought in to mitigate the devastating impact of the coronavirus on football stakeholders, especially the footballers.

“We will ensure that every club accounts for the money. In fact, it is a requirement from FIFA so it is not like we even have a choice. It is in the best interest of everyone that every beneficiary accounts for the money so that the funds are not used for unnecessary things”, the source said.

Over the weekend, GhanaWeb was informed that the GFA had

received part of the FIFA COVID-19 Relief Fund for onward disbursement to members of the association.

The FA has thus received $1m of the expected $1.5m allotted to both men’s and women’s football clubs and other stakeholders.

As a way to empower and grow the women game, $500,000 of the $1 million that has arrived is specifically earmarked for Women’s football.

Also in, is the first trench of the FIFA COVID-19 Relief Solidarity Fund of $500,000 which will benefit Premier league clubs, Division One League clubs and other stakeholders.

This means, the GFA has received $1,000,000 and in the coming days will begin distributing it to clubs who have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.
