Youth are important agents in building the beyond aid agenda - Canadian High Commissioner

Her Excellency (H.E) Heather Cameron, the Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, has noted that the youth are important agents in building the beyond aid agenda as well as vital assets to influence global change.

This,she says is important for the youth to have the chance now to come together, exchange ideas, share knowledge and dialogue through learning and friendship with the network built, being extended and sustained.

“No one is ever too young to be a leader and to seek answers that could bring about change in the world. You are leaders now and we hope that this convergence will strengthen your leadership skills,” she said.

H.E Cameron said this when she engaged with some35Canadian delegation drawn from Ontario and Nova Scotia who joined young leaders from the United States of America and 15 other African countries for this year’s African Youth and Governance Convergence (AYGC) held in Accra.

She also had a side engagement at the breakfast meeting with theCanadian delegation.

AYGC is the convergence of a four-tier transformational leadership programme for leadership grooming, cascade of mentorship, community impact, and networking for African and Diaspora youth.

the Youth Bridge Foundation (YBF), a Non-Governmental Organisation focused on creating supportive platforms to challenge the creativity of the Youth, and to make available critical information and resources needed for total development.

She said the Diaspora networks had become key drivers for economic growth and development, and therefore Diaspora relationships needed to be strengthened.

She therefore admonished the youth to make the Sustainable Development Goals their agenda for accelerating growth and progress globally.

Youth Bridge Foundation and the Ghanaian News Canada signs partnership to groom Ghanaian-Canadian Beauty Queens

Youth Bridge Foundation (YBF), the initiator and convenor of African Youth and Governance Convergence (AYGC), and the Ghanaian News Canada, a community paper in Canada onSeptember 3rd2018, went into a partnership to hostand provide leadership grooming for winners of theMiss Ghanaian-Canadian Beauty Pageant for the next three years.

The pageant, which an initiative of the Ghanaian News Canada has the primary goal of grooming young women to become role models to other ladies in their communities.

After a successful pilot of hosting and leadership grooming of Ms ZinaIassch, the reigning (2017-2018) Miss Ghanaian-Canadian Queen at the 10th AYGC held in Accra, Ghana, YBF agreed to continue this partnership.

Ms Iassch 22, is a nurse and currently attending University of Western Ontario, Oshawa for registered nursing Degree.

At a symbolic ceremony to finalize the partnership, Mr Emmanuel Ayiku, the Publisher of Ghanaian News Canada and President of Miss GhanaianCanadian Pageant said, the spectacle, which started two years ago also aims at encouraging young ladies to be ambassadors of change in their communities.

“We do this to encourage our young future ladies to build themselves up and be ambassadors to the little ones who look up to them as mentors,” Mr Ayiku said.

of Youth Bridge Foundation, observed that, the partnership going into the future will espouse the ultimate idea of AYGC; a four-tier transformational leadership programme for leadership grooming, cascade of mentorship, community impact, and networking for African and Diaspora youth.

He said the annualconvergence that challenges the creativity of the Youth in Ghana and other African countries as well as the Diaspora, and to make available critical information and resources needed for total development will have the beauty queens participating and sharing their personal experiences with other delegate’s whiles building their leadership skills. th

This year’s convergence held on 5 August to 12th August was on the theme: “Mobilizing Africa’s Youth to Build a Continent Beyond Aid.” The eight-day convergencewas a platform to critically consider how to pull resources of young people to transform the continent and strive towards Africa’s aspirations ‘beyond aid’.

According to Mr Oteng, impacting of communities and societiesare essential to YBF so nurturing young future leaders, with them going back to their communities to impact lives, is timely, hence, the partnership adding that; “This will also extend exposure to motherland Africa.

Others were; Rule of Law, Gender Equality and Social Inclusion, Environment and Foreign Affairs to produce the 2018 AYGC Resolution Booklets.

The convergence which is targeted at creating the platform for African youth to analyse policy documents and discuss issues affecting the

development of the continent has been in existence since 2009 with the main focus of grooming the African youth.

YBF, a non-Governmental organisationof the yearly leadership grooming programme, is accredited with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Special Consultative Status.

As a youth-focused educational organisation, it has the goal of bridging gaps for positive youth development.

The 2018Miss Ghanaian-Canadian Beauty Pageant is scheduled for November.

10th African Youth and Governance Conference held in Accra, Ghana

The Executive Director of Youth Bridge Foundation [YBF], Mr. Seth Oteng has appealed to the African leaders to involve the youth in policy and decision making to build the African continent beyond aid.

“African youths are marginalized but if leaders connect with them and fully engage their potentials to develop their skills the youth will contribute to the development of Africa,” he said.

He said, African youth is endowed with great potentials, skills and creativeness that would drive the developmental agenda of the African continents in the right direction.

He noted that every youth in Africa is entitled to receive an exciting, engaging and relevant education to spearhead the Africa beyond aid agenda.

Mr. Oteng disclosed this at the official opening of the 10th African Youth and Governance Conference [AYGC] in Accra on Wednesday, dubbed on “Mobilizing Africa’s youth to build a continent beyond aid.”

“I use the term education in the broadest sense of the word because to me it is not only about academic performance it is also about developing Africa’s youth as an allround person so that they are confident about getting a job, having a fulfilling career and ultimately building a home as parent and building communities, nations and continent beyond aid,” he noted.

YBF is a nongovernmental organization that is focused on creating supportive platforms to challenge the creativity of the youth, and to make available critical information and resources needed for total development.

The conference saw resource persons drawn from Cornell, Dalhousie, McMaster Universities and other Ghanaian resource persons.

She also emphasised on the need of gender equality as women have a vital role to play in the success of every nation adding that “For Africa to be beyond aid it is effective for leaders to ensure women fully participate in leadership roles and decision making to improve gender balance,” She said.

Supporting our new and returning students in School The summer holidays are over and students, young, middle-aged and old are either starting academic/skills training journeys or returning to continue from where they left off last winter and/or spring semesters. Across the nation many of our young community members are starting schools for the first time, especially in the Kindergartens and Elementary Schools.

Some are also entering Junior or Senior High Schools for the first time. This sector of the educational journey is what is most stressful for most of our youth.

The early days of the new academic year are shrouded in fear, anxiety and some excitement, all of the unknown. This is where the adults in our community, especially those that are conversant with the education system, need to come together to find ways of offering the much-needed supports to our youth. The high school system especially is fraught with a lot of challenges for new students. These include unfriendly and unhelpful teachers and school administrators, older youth some of whom are bullies and unfamiliar curriculum.

For the above challenges, we need to sit up as a responsible community of caring adults, to design the necessary supports for our youth.

These are necessary to prevent or forestall school drop-outs some of whom are caused by the lack of support systems for the youth. Many of the adults in our community are familiar with some of these challenges mentioned above. Some are educators and counsellors in the school system and in the social services sector. We suggest that we get together and anticipate the likelihood of these problems that are likely to affect our youth in the school system and act accordingly.

These will involve few hours a week or during the weekends of volunteer time.

Those that have expertise in the areas mentioned can take the lead responsibilities in organizing some of these support networks and programs to assist our youth in the schools. Once the youth know that help and support are available in their own community, they will feel less frightened, less anxious and are likely to seek help instead of dropping out of school. We are calling on all the organizations in our community, religious groupings and associations to all think of the proposals above and set up something in their communities, in the churches, mosques, ethnic/ alumni associations, etc. and come up with support programs for the youth going to schools for the first time or returning to school.

Some of these initiatives have been tried before with the establishment of “Home Work Clubs”.

We encourage those that did these before to revamp them. They are needed now as before.

Again it takes only a few hours of volunteer time from community members to make these initiatives work. We entreat all our community members to get involved in these initiatives.

There are also adults who are either returning to school to continue or finish their educational programs or skills training. Some are also starting educational programs for the first time. They all need the support of community members because for any educational/training program that someone embarks on, there is every likelihood that some of our community members have completed those programs or are currently engaged in those programs. We encourage those returning to school or starting new programs to seek help. Do enquire from other community members those that have embarked on similar programs before. We encourage adult members of our community who have skills and expertise in these areas to also reach out and assist.

Our collective success as a community depends on our reaching out to each other for support.

We wish all of you a good school year.

Mother, son die in hospital after being found without vital signs in Brampton pool A 38-year-old mother Elizabeth Solomon and her five-year-old son Emmanuel Akrong Jnr. are dead after they were found without vital signs in a Brampton backyard pool Peel police say.

Distraught parents denied access to daughter and grandson’s bodies The grieving parents of Elizabeth Efua Solomon, who drowned tragically on August 4th whilst trying to save her five year old son Emmanuel Jnr who had fallen into their pool and also drowned at the family’s Brampton home, had only one wish: To view the bodies of their daughter and grandson before they were buried.

However, staff at the Meadowvale Cemetery on Mavis Rd in Brampton were ordered by the deceased’s husband, Mr Emmanuel Akrong, Director of Accounting Policy and Reporting Tangerine Bank Canada, not to allow the parents, siblings or other family members of the deceased to see the bodies during the burial.

“What are they trying to hide?”, asked an angry Mr Samuel Solomon, father of the deceased, during a heated confrontation this afternoon between Akrong’s representatives and the deceased’s family.

Mr. Solomon, his wife, Mrs Elizabeth Solomon and two daughters (sisters of the deceased) had travelled all the way from Accra, Ghana arriving in Toronto early Sunday morning. Mr Solomon’s three sons (brothers of the deceased) who had travelled from, Norway, England and the U.S. had also arrived earlier for

what was supposed to be a private family funeral that afternoon at the Meadowvale Cemetery.

Upon arriving at the funeral home, the family learned for the first time that they would not be allowed to view their loved ones under the specific instruction of Emmanuel Akrong, husband of the deceased.

Calls to Emmanuel Akrong and his Pastor John Danquah (Akrong’s designated spokesperson & contact in Canada) of Grace and Truth Message Tabernacle Mississauga, for an explanation of the family’s predicament were not returned.

With the constraint of not being allowed to view the bodies, the Solomons and other family supporters could not participate in the burial and left the funeral home with many questions unanswered.

Mr. Emmanuel Akrong and his Pastor, John Danquah, did not attend the burial fuelling the suspicion that the bodies had already been buried and the caskets were possibly empty.

Ontario Freezing Driver Fees Scheduled Fee Increases For September Will Not Go Ahead OTTAWA — Ontario’s Government for the People took the latest step to provide immediate relief for taxpayers and make life more affordable for Ontarians.

Today, Premier Doug Ford and Minister of Transportation John Yakabuski announced that Ontario is freezing a number of driver fees that were set to increase on September 1, 2018.

“People are fed up with paying more and more every time they need to renew their licence or take a driving test,”

said Premier Ford. “This will make life more affordable for drivers right across the province.

This is the latest example of our government putting money back where it belongs — in the pockets of hardworking Ontarians.”

The following fees are being frozen to directly benefit Ontario drivers and businesses:

- Road and knowledge tests for all driver’s licence classes.

- Fees to get and renew driver’s licences.

TORONTO -- Ontario’s new Progressive C o n s e r v a t i v e government ushered in the first of what it promised would be major reforms to social assistance on Tuesday, reducing a planned increase in support rates and cancelling a pilot program that provided payments to lowincome people in certain communities.

In an afternoon news conference, Social Services Minister Lisa MacLeod said the government would come

up with a plan within 100 days to overhaul the “disjointed patchwork system” left by the previous Liberal regime.

The Liberals, she said, spent money the province didn’t have on “handouts that actually do little if anything to break the cycle of poverty.”

The Canadian High Commission in Ghana has discredited reports that it is running a visa lottery.

A post on the High Commission’s official Twitter account read, ‘’don’t be a victim of false info online: Canada does not have a visa lottery.”

There have been rumours being forwarded on social media, that the Canadian government had opened up its visa lottery programme for Ghanaians and other countries.

The latest announcement is to warn Ghanaians about scams and fraudsters preying on innocent applicants online.

So far, only the U.S. runs the visa lottery which allows winners to go through the immigration process to

attain a green card.

The Canadian High Commission has warned the general public to ignore those spreading rumours which could be linked to a possible scam.

Checked Bag Fees At Air Canada, WestJet Rise in Tandem Fees at both airlines are rising to $30 from $25 for the first bag, and for the second bag to $50 from $30 MONTREAL — Many Canadians will be forced to spend a little more to travel after Air Canada and WestJet Airlines Ltd. said they are increasing fees for passengers to check their bags.

The country’s two largest airlines are raising the fee for the first checked bag to $30 from $25, and for the second bag to $50 from $30.

The moves were made swiftly after major U.S. airline JetBlue Airways Corp. hiked its fees for checked bags and to change a ticket.

“This is the first change since 2014 and will help offset overall increasing costs and keep overall ticket prices competitive,” Air Canada spokeswoman Isabelle Arthur wrote in an email.

The new baggage fees apply on flights across Canada, to and from the United States, the Caribbean and Mexico, departing on or after Oct. 5.

WestJet’s changes apply on flights starting Oct. 1 for domestic bookings made as of last Friday, and as of Tuesday on flights to the U.S. and international destinations.

“By raising fees for optional services, such as checked bags, we can continue to maintain the lower fares our guests expect,” added WestJet spokeswoman Lauren Stewart.

Federal Tory Delegates Vote That Being Born In Canada Shouldn’t Guarantee Citizenship A resolution targeting so-called ‘birth tourism’ passed at convention

By Althia Raj and Ryan Maloney HALIFAX — Birthright citizenship should be barred to anyone who doesn’t have a parent who is a Canadian citizen or is a permanent resident, Tory delegates said in a vote Saturday at their party’s policy convention.

Currently, anyone who is born on Canadian soil receives Canadian citizenship, something that has spurred concerns about so-called “birth tourism.”

Ahead of the vote, British Columbia MP Alice Wong spoke in favour of the motion, saying “passport babies” take away the resources of our system, which endangers Canadian mothers.

Tory MPs speak for and against proposal “We should fight for our own babies,” Wong told the crowd of 3,000 gathered at the Halifax Convention Centre for the biennial convention.

A Quebec lawyer told delegates that the proposal would involve “extreme” measures for a “so-called problem.” He warned it would create “stateless children” in Canada.

Alberta MP Deepak Obhrai urged delegates to stick with the status quo.

Fees are waived for WestJet Plus passengers, gold and silver rewards members or those booking with RBC World Elite Mastercards.

“This is a fundamental question of equality out here. Any person who is born in Canada, by law, is entitled to be a Canadian,” Obhrai said. “We cannot choose who is going to be a Canadian and who is not going to be a Canadian.”

Porter Airlines says its fees aren’t changing. Air Transat and Sunwing couldn’t be immediately reached for comment.

Obhrai told HuffPost Canada after the vote that he spoke out because he has a “fundamental belief” that a Canadian is a Canadian.

Airlines have been adding fees for a decade and now charge for seats with more legroom, early boarding, upgrades, food and beverages, entertainment and wireless access. Air Canada earned more than $1 billion from these payments last year while WestJet collected about $440 million.

“We have seen, around the world, governments take citizenship away from people they don’t like,” he said. “We should stick to the law, and the law states anybody born in Canada is a Canadian.”

The world’s top 10 airlines collected US$29.7 billion in revenues from ancillary fees last year, up from US$2.1 billion a decade ago, according to Idea Works Company, a U.S. research company that tracks airline revenue.

“The leader and the team will need to make a decision about what we are going to do and if this is the kind of issues or policies that we want to push forward for the next campaign.”

Leclerc said Scheer’s team was “of course” aware of the lessons of the 2015 election when the Liberals successfully attacked the Tories for a bill that stripped dual citizens of their Canadian citizenship if they were convicted of terrorism, treason or espionage.

“In 2019, we have a new approach,” Leclerc said.

With their new leader, the Tories will focus on issues “that will unite Canadians,” he said.

A Newfoundland and Labrador delegate told the crowd that the resolution would not mean that Tories would bring in abortion legislation, but rather that the party would be officially neutral on the issue. He compared it to how Tories removed words opposing same-sex marriage from their policy book at the last convention in 2016.

A Quebec delegate scored applause for saying Conservatives believe “big government should stay the hell out of people’s private lives.”

Saskatchewan MPs Rosemarie Falk and Cathay Wagantall spoke in favour of the resolution. Falk said that Tories should not place a “values test” on their own members. Wagantall urged delegates to “get some guts” and take a stand on the issue.

Deputy Tory Leader Lisa Raitt, however, spoke out against the resolution, saying Scheer promised clearly during a “very long leadership” race that he wouldn’t bring in legislation on abortion.

Delegates did pass a resolution stating that “abortion should be explicitly excluded from Canada’s maternal and child health program in countries where Canadian aid is delivered,” as was the approach under former prime minister Stephen Harper.

Resolution to prevent pornography addiction defeated A resolution stating that Tories support legislation that “any child born alive shall receive the full benefits of life-saving care” also carried.

An eyebrow-raising proposal calling on the party to support the development of laws and programs to “prevent pornography exposure and addiction” was defeated in a close vote.

Party members also passed a number of resolutions in line with positions the caucus is already championing, including recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, opposing a federal carbon tax, championing interprovincial trade, and renegotiating Canada’s Safe Third Country agreement with the United States.

FOCUS “They Are Going Back!”

Asks Joe Kingsley Eyiah, OCT, Brookview MS, Toronto, Canada “Every student can learning but it takes students different ways to get there”Schleicher, 2018 September is here again and among the ads running on television as well as radio is this catchy one: “They are going back!” Who are going back? And where are they going? What are they going to do?

It is back to school time and students as well as teachers are going back to school! Students are happy to go back to school, many to be with their friends whose company they have missed for long time. That notwithstanding, this is a time of promise when students are full of great intentions. Everyone hopes to get the top marks, never to miss classes, and to make sure all assignments are done and on time. Teachers are also happy because they are going back to the work they love to do mostteaching!

Going back to school after a long break is not a big issue in the western world, but in Ghana it is. So let’s encourage our youth roaming the streets or working as shoe-shine boys, and as prostitutes in Ghana as well as factory hands in Toronto and elsewhere to go back to school.

I would like to urge governments, parents and teachers to help keep our children in school. For, the economy or the price of staying in school is far better for our children and the society than the price of dropping out of school.

African countries could give the same access and opportunities of learning to many students. The caution is for the Ministry of Education in Ghana to ensure that there is equitable distribution of educational resources throughout all the regions of the country. A word to the wise is enough! and even against coups as we fear in Ghana! You see, spending more money on arms and bigger armed forces than on education eventually undermines our national security that we seek as a government to protect. We spend less money on education and thus allow our education system to deteriorate producing more school drop-outs than would have been. These dropouts resort to dubious and criminal ways of living.

Many become security problem for our nation.

They become lawless, uneducable and politically difficult to deal with as citizens. I think what we need in our beloved country-Ghana security wise is a better education system that can produce the finest of intelligence which large armed forces and stock piles of the most sophisticated arms would not bring about.

Better education leads to development, which in turn alleviates poverty-a fertile ground for dissatisfaction, backwardness, coups and terrorism!

It is good news that the government of Ghana last school year introduced free Senior High School (SHS) education to all students in the country. Though there might be teething problems with the implementation of such huge education project in the nation, with proper administration and respectable co-operation of teachers the project will be successful. It will surely increase the access to education by many young people in the country.

I am encouraged by the welcome message from the Director of Education of the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), Dr. John Malloy to all students during the 20182019 School Year which in part reads, “Our job is to do everything we can to help you succeed. Your school should be safe and welcoming space and your learning should be relevant, fun and engaging.”

Obviously the School Board knows that ‘each and every student is capable of success!’ The focus therefore is to ensure that ‘all students can succeed by having access-the same access-to opportunities, learning, resources and tools; that is equity.’

To governments I say, spend more money on education than on arms. Education is the best investment you can make for the protection of your people. The best against under-development

The above brings me to the issue of the Double-Track system to accommodate the increase in enrolment at Senior High Schools in Ghana. The system which is already in practice in other

Parental Role: Perhaps most parents become very happy when it’s September. That’s the time they “ship” their children (with all the headaches they give them at home) back to school and for that matter to the teacher after the long school break. This assumption notwithstanding, parents still have a lot to do for their children and those who teach their kids if we want a successful school year for our children. Please parents, interest yourselves in your children’s education. Save some few dollars on bottles and on fashion for your children’s education. Use those dollars and cedis to buy education insurance for your children’s future.

It is very disheartening to see parents, especially Ghanaian parents who receive child support from governments of the western world spending such money on fashion and parties instead of investing such monies in their children’s future. I know diapers and children’s food could be expensive (especially with HST now in Ontario), more often than not, monies received for child support are not wisely used by parents. Some parents even fail to supply their children with basic back to school materials such as pencils, pens, erasers and exercise books and still expect their children to do well at school!

Parents who can must help their children to do their homework from school.

Set aside a common study time at home for studying, reading and quiet activities.

The experts would say, “Do your best to avoid arguments during that time, and encourage your children not to cram in homework just before bedtime.” There shouldn’t be homework wars between parents and students.

Kathy Lynn, a Vancouverbased parenting speaker and author talking on the issue of homework as far as teenagers are concerned points out that, “At this age,

kids are trying to do things their own way, and parents have a hard time allowing them that freedom, so that’s when clashes come up about homework.”

It is very profitable to supervise or monitor your children’s homework from school each night right at the beginning of the school year. Such early parental supervision of the child’s school work at home would leave no room for laziness on the part of your kids when it comes to school work. The early bird catches the worm! Check your child’s school planner every time he/she returns from school if possible.

Make this possible and start as soon as the school year begins.

Many if not all schools send information and special permission forms with students home at the beginning of the school year. Parents must ensure that such letters and permission forms are carefully read, understood and those needed to be signed and returned to school are duly complied with. Let’s demonstrate the sense of responsibility for our children to take us serious.

As parents we must show concern for our children’s education as they are

back to school, and help keep them in school till a successful completion. Just play your part!

What can we do as Teachers to help our students: To my fellow teachers, I encourage all to embark on practical action research, a reflective inquiry to study their own practices in the classroom. They should seek answers to the questions: What is going on in this place called school? And what role do they play as instructors?

This phenomenon emerges from being curious about teachers’ role in the classroom. Thus, we must as part of our work record our students’ “living curriculum” as seen through the “lens” of experience instead of the “metaphor of angels”. Ethnographic approach goes beyond interviewing the respondents and chronicling their experiences to “living and becoming” part of such experiences (see Short, 1991). We must go beyond just teaching subjects to our students and teach them ‘life’.

A Note to Students: There is a Ghanaian adage that says, “no one drinks a medicine for a sick person.” And Brookview School in Toronto carries

the following words as its motto: “Success Has ‘U’ in It.” Oh, how true! Students must know and understand that they go to school to learn. Though teachers are there to help them learn, much of how they succeed as learners depends on them.

The long vacation often causes students to forget most of what they have learned the previous year and since the early days of the new school year are used to revise stuff learned at the previous grade level students ought to take such days seriously. There should not be playing of truancy.

We are going back to school. Students should therefore cut the time they spend playing or watching television late into the night.

Many students are late to school in the mornings because they don’t go to bed early. Punctuality, timely completion of homework and positive attitude toward studies are obvious hallmarks of success at school and all students ought to chalk them!

I wish all students and teachers a happy new school year with many good returns and ask God’s guidance for and blessings on all.

Legacy of a Global Icon, Kofi Annan

By Edmund Agbeko, Toronto The cruel hand of death has robbed Africa and the world of a global icon, Kofi Annan, 80, who died on August 18 in Bern, Switzerland.

Born in Kumasi, Ghana, Kofi Annan was the 7th Secretary General of the United Nations; the first to hail from subSaharan Africa. Annan was a distinguished career diplomat, an outstanding international civil servant, a respected statesman and peacemaker which earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001.

Annan’s stellar record shows that contrary to the negative and shameful image which many African presidents have projected of the continent; Africa is capable of producing and has, in fact, produced world class leaders who are not corrupt, dishonest, mediocre, tribalists and persecutors of their fellow citizens.

On three accounts, Kofi Annan, perhaps one of the most distinguished and illustrious UN Secretary-General, was

quite different from rest of the lot. One, he was the first UN SecretaryGeneral ever to come from a lifelong career in the UN bureaucracy.

Two, he was also the first UN Secretary-General from sub-Saharan Africa, a courtly figure who spearheaded the global organization during a period of tumult. And thirdly, he was the last UN Secretary-General to prominently figure, in news headlines and public mind across the globe, as a central figure in the major international conflicts of his time.

Throughout his ten years as head of the world body, Kofi Annan was often labelled as a symbol of preternatural calm. With the traditional tranquillity and disciplined oratory-skills

of a career-diplomat, he always appeared, even to his very close associates and colleagues, to be a man with little tendency to divulge his anger in extreme situations. His unflustered persona - and carefully nurtured image of an honest broker between conflicting interests - was generally considered to be his key strength. At the same time, in much more intense ways, however, this aloofness was also cited as his defining weakness.

A decent, humble and gentle man, Kofi Annan lived in Roosevelt Island which is not far from UN headquarters and often travelled to office by public transit. He joined the UN secretariat in 1962 and rose through the ranks to the positions of assistant secretary general, under-secretary general and in 1996 was elected secretary general by the UN General Assembly. Since 2007, Annan was a member of “The Elders”, a humanitarian group of distinguished world leaders established by

Nelson Mandela. Annan succeeded Mandela as group chairperson in 2013. Annan was married to a Swedish lady and they had three children.

Kofi Anna, the master practitioner of art of finding common grounds by listening to and respecting others, inspired us, guided us and protected us to the best of his abilities.

In his interview with the BBC, in April this year, in one of his final public appearances, on the occasion of his eightieth birthday, he frankly acknowledged that the UN still had some faults in its fundamental operating codes but those faults would be addressed with continuous evolution of the world body in the coming days. He said, “The UN can be improved, it is not perfect but if it didn’t exist you would have to create it. I am a stubborn optimist; I was born an optimist and will remain an optimist”.

Nonetheless, he left the stage with a content and satisfied heart, we pray.

Kofi Annan left a powerful legacy which one hopes African leaders will emulate. He did Africa proud at the United Nations and on the world stage. When he retired from the UN at the end of 2006, there were rumours that he would seek election as

president of Ghana which he denied. I am told attempts were made to woo him into contesting for the presidency of Ghana; I am sure glad he rejected the offers.

The position of president of an African country has been so devalued and desecrated that one would not recommend it for any decent, honest, civilised and respectable person of integrity.

Annan was an internationalist, a distinguished diplomat and a renowned statesman. He was a peacemaker and a peace builder par excellence.

He made every effort and left no stone unturned in painstaking efforts to prevent war in Iraq, but unfortunately the two principal protagonists, namely, US president George W. Bush and Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein were itching for war. War eventually broke out in 2003 and with the benefit of hindsight; there were no winners in that bloody and brutal war - Only losers!

Annan, however, succeeded in Kenya where he mediated and brokered a peace agreement between Mr Raila Odinga and Mr Mwai Kibaki in 2008 following the bloody aftermath of Kenya’s 2007 general election.

Annan’s efforts saved Kenya from state collapse

which would have had dire consequences for East Africa.

2018 School Placement: No schools for over 67,000 students as GNAT calls for postponement in reopening

The release from the GES shows that 67,382 students who have qualified to SHS could not be placed under the system because they could not be matched with any of their school choices.

According to the release, over 400,000 will also begin the double track system introduced by the government to deal with infrastructure challenges.

Double Track System The double track system, which begins on September 11, the official reopening date for schools across the country, will see one group of students in school whiles others are on vacation.

The GES has directed first-year students to visit www.cssps.gov.gh to access their placements.

It said candidates placed on the Green Track will resume on September 11, 2018, whereas the Gold Track will resume on November 8, 2018.

The GES further advised candidates who could not be placed to visit the CSSPS portal to choose from a number of available schools with vacanci The government ment has explained that the double-in-take is meant to cater for the spike in enrollment into Senior High Schools due to the free SHS policy.

Some 400 out of the 696 public Senior High Schools have been selected to operate the double system.

“We should have over the years developed the internet infrastructure to make internet accessibility very easy.

“And since we faced the same problems the previous year in accessing the placement on the internet, we should have envisaged these problems and push the reopening a bit forward instead of reopening all on the 11th of this month”, the GNAT Secretary indicated.

Akufo-Addo reassigns ministers: Otiko, Hamed out of cabinet

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced his first ever reshuffle.

The long-awaited ministerial reshuffle has seen some appointees reassigned to either head or deputize at other ministries.

News of the highly-anticipated ministerial musical chairs, seen by many as a means to inject some life into the current administration, have been trending for days now on social media.

The announcement therefore comes as no surprise to many. But what is shocking, however, is the list of appointees that appear to have been assigned lesser roles of importance in his administration.

The casualties include notables such as the Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister, Otiko Afisah-Djaba.

With the recent scandal over the AMERI power deal which has claimed the job of Hon Boakye Agyarko, the man tasked to temporarily hold the fort at the Energy Ministry, John Peter Amewu has been maintained.

She is now Ambassador-designate to Italy.

Peter Amewu will have a responsibility to bring some calmness at the Energy Ministry which has suffered a lot of heat over the last few days.

Hon Cynthia Morrison, MP for Agona West, is now the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection-designate.

Also, Pius Enam Hadzide, former deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, has been moved to the Information Ministry as a deputy.

Otiko Djabah is not the only person out of Nana Addo’s cabinet; more are expected in the coming days.

While, Perry Curtis Okudzeto, former deputy Minister for Information, is now Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports.

But it is noteworthy that Sanitation and Water Resources Minister, Kofi Adda, who was recently in the news for ‘doling out’ 30,000 cedis of his MP’s Common Fund to a church in his constituency, has been asked to head the Aviation Ministry.

A statement signed by the Communications Director at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, added that President Akufo-Addo is “hopeful Parliament will expedite the vetting” of the reassigned Ministers and their deputies “so they can assume their respective offices as quickly as possible”.

Experts Meet in Accra to Improve Road Safety and Urban Mobility The workshop underscored the linkages between growing urbanization and expected rise in the number of road traffic fatalities in the region ACCRA, Ghana, August 23, 2018/ -- Every year, road crashes are estimated to claim over 300,000 lives in Africa. According to WHO, the African region has 2 per cent of the world’s registered vehicles but a disproportionate 16 per cent of the world’s road traffic deaths. Road traffic fatalities are estimated to be the fourth leading cause of death of persons aged 5 through 44 years.

To share experience in improving road safety, over 100 participants representing nearly 20 African Government Ministries of Infrastructure/Transport, National Road SafetyAuthorities and Councils,African sub-regional and regional organizations, international organizations, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), academic and research institutions, and the private sector are attending a 2-day workshop on Road Safety and Urban Mobility in Accra, Ghana.

The workshop was inspired by the UN SecretaryGeneral’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, Mr. Jean Todt, and former UN Secretary-General Mr. Kofi Annan, who had intended to participate in the meeting before his sudden illness caused him to cancel his trip to Ghana. The meeting on Monday began with a moment of silence in respect for Mr. Annan and in sympathy with his family at his recent passing.

“I shared with him the plight this great continent faces in terms of road safety and he, as expected, was ready to help make a difference… I am honored to carry on his legacy through the outcomes of this workshop and in our continued work towards improved road safety in his country and region” says Mr. Todt on Mr. Kofi Annan’s desire to end road deaths in Africa.

Of the 1.3 million road traffic fatalities every year globally, more than half are accounted for in urban areas. Road traffic fatalities are estimated to be the fourth leading cause of death globally of persons aged 5 through 44 years. There are a number of issues that affect the road safety situation in a country, including quality of road infrastructure, level of law enforcement, safety of vehicles, road user behaviors and post-crash care. In the urban area, it is critical to address the safety of vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, children and motorcyclists.

According to Hon. Ofori Asiamah, “[road safety] deficiencies suppress the socio-economic benefits we have derived from the investment made in the provision of urban transport infrastructure and services”.

Ms. Vera Songwe, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa, Addis Ababa, highlighted that safety needs to be “built into” infrastructure investment, as this is far less costly than retrofitting roads afterwards to be safer.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra Monday 20th, she hinted that she would want to take a long break after 13 years of active politics so that she could enjoy life with her children. Ms Djaba was appointed Ghana’s Ambassador to Italy just a fortnight ago but said she had declined the offer and communicated same officially to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The former Minister has handed over to the Minister of Planning, Professor George GyanBaffour, who stood in for Hajia Alima Mahama, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development who is presently in Mecca.

After her appointment as Ambassador to Italy, Ms Djaba was tasked to hand over to Hajia Mahama who would act until the new minister designate Mrs. Cynthia Morrison is vetted by Parliament.

“At 56 years, I want to relax and enjoy my family and life and therefore, I am not ready to take up the appointment as Ambassador to Italy”, she said.

Explaining further why she declined the offer, Ms. Djaba said she was bowing out of politics to take care of her former husband who had stroke for the past six years.

“I am the one who has been taking care of him since he got sick and I cannot abandon him now”, she said.

The former Women’s Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) said she felt blessed by the opportunity given her to serve the country.

According to her, the work was enormous but with support from all, she was able to do her best. During her tenure as Minister of of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Ms. Djaba, together with the ministry, won several awards.

While the ministry was adjudged the Most Inspirational Public Sector Institution in Ghana for 2017, Ms. Djaba won the 2018 Dususu Africa Gender Ministers Award and the 2018 European Best Practices Award.

She was also adjudged the OUstanding Contribution to Gender and Children’s Rights, and won an award for promotion of gender equality from the Africa Public Sector Conference Awards (APSCA).

Basic Requirements for Refugee Protection Claims in Canada A claim for refugee protection in Canada may be made in or outside Canada. Claims made inside Canada are made to an immigration officer, who, pursuant to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA), shall, upon receipt of a claim, promptly determine whether or not the claim is eligible to be referred to the Refugee Protection Division (RPD) for further action on the claim.

A refugee claim may not meet the eligibility criteria to be referred to the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) if the claimant has been recognized as a Convention refugee by another country he can return to; if the claimant has already been granted protected person status in Canada; if the claimant arrived via the Canada-United States border; if the claimant is inadmissible to Canada on security grounds; if the claimant made a previous refugee claim that was not found eligible; if the claimant made a previous refugee claim that was rejected by the IRB or if the claimant abandoned or withdrew a previous refugee claim.

Under the Act, refugee protection is conferred on

a person when the person has been determined by IRB to be a Convention refugee or a person in need of protection or when the Minister allows an application for protection.

Section 96 of the Act defines a “Convention Refugee” as a person who, by reason of a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion, is outside each of their countries of nationality and is unable or, by reason of that fear, unwilling to avail themselves of the protection of each of those countries; or not having a country of nationality, is outside the country of their former habitual residence and is unable or, by reason of that fear, unwilling to return to that country.

Section 97 of the Act defines a “person in

need of protection” as a person whose removal to their country or countries of nationality or, if they do not have a country of nationality, their country of former habitual residence, would subject them personally to a danger of torture or to a risk to their life or to a risk of cruel and unusual treatment or punishment.

There is a general presumption that persons in need of protection and those who claim protection as conventional refugees cannot live safely in any other part of their countries of nationality.

The risk they face should not be related to inadequate medical care in the country and should be specific to the claimant and not generalized risk.

The risk should also not be inherent or incidental to lawful sanctions, unless such sanctions are imposed in disregard of accepted international standards. In refugee protection claims, a distinction is made between persecution and prosecution.

Such documents could be national identity card, evidence of military service, marriage certificate, school transcripts, baptismal certificate, a letter from your religious leader or community group or family member, professional membership card, transcripts proving professional training, and diplomas.

Supporting documents such as photographs, letters, videos to show the problems one has passed through, police and medical reports to substantiate the claims,

if applicable, news articles about people connected to one’s case, if applicable, sworn statements of people who have witnessed what happened to you or who have experienced problems that are similar to yours in writing, if necessary; and probable impact of your ordeal on your mental health presented by a doctor or a psychologist. Also important is evidence of human rights conditions in your country even though the risk you face should be personal and not the same general risk that everyone else in your country faces.

Thus, at a refugee hearing, greater focus would likely be on identity,

credibility, subjective fear, generalized risk, particularized risk, state protection, internal flight alternative and legal residence in another country. It is necessary to contact a professional for advice and guidance if one contemplates seeking refuge in Canada.

She also suggested that the most significant sign of respect from the regional workshop to the former UN SecretaryGeneral would be “the seriousness with which we take up this life-and-death topic and the commitments we follow through to improve road safety and

urban

development.”

The regional workshop, hosted by the Government of Ghana is designed to support Governments in meeting their commitments to implement the Sustainable Development Goals.

Reducing road fatalities is a specific target under Goal 3 to improve health and well-being, and improving access to safe transport systems is a specific target under Goal 11 to ensure inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities.

Annan’s last public mission was to Zimbabwe before the bitterly contested elections. Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa praised him as, “a rare breed of diplomat; soft-spoken but unshakeably firm … Go well son of Africa, champion of the world!”Russia’s Vladimir Putin praised his leadership skills. He said, “I sincerely admired his wisdom and courage, his ability to make informed decisions even in the most complex, critical situations.”

The Foundation that he established, the Kofi Anna Foundation, in announcing his passing issued a statement saying that “during his distinguished career

and leadership of the United Nations, he was an ardent champion of peace, sustainable development, human rights and the rule of law.”

Kofi Annan was awarded the Noble Peace prize in 2001 for his gentle guidance of the UN into a relevant body for world peace. The Nobel Peace Committee in awarding the prize praised Kofi Annan and the UN “for their work for a better organized and more peaceful world.”

The Diaspora youth has a lot to offer in building nations beyond aid - Presidency

Acknowledging the resourcefulness of diaspora youth in building communities and nations, Madam Nadia Adongo Musah, the Deputy Director in charge of Diaspora Affairs at the Office of the President, hastasked African leaders to support and create the opportunities to tap into their potentials.

“There is a generational gap between that first and second generations. This is because the first generation area group of us that always bring something back to Africa.

“We have a second generation that might never bring anything back, we must be able to tie our second generation to start looking back to Africa specifically, to know and understand that this is their root and they can contribute their intellect or finance in building Africa no matter what,” she said.

Madam Adongo Musah made the call at the grand opening of the 10th African Youth and Governance Convergence (AYGC), held in Accra on the theme: “Mobilizing the Africa’s Youth to Build a Continent Beyond Aid.” AYGC is the convergence of a four-tier transformational leadership programme for leadership grooming, cascade of mentorship, community impact, and networking for African and Diaspora youth.

Ghana Police Ladies Attend Annual IAWP Forum in Calgary

Over 50 members of the International Association of Women Police’s (IAWP) wig of the Ghana Police Service and other law enforcement agencies in Ghana, joined hundreds of their colleague police officers from other 35 countries all around the world for the 2018 International Association of Women Police conference in the City of Calgary. This year’s event, which took place at the BMO Centre from Aug. 26 to 30, had the theme of the fiveday conference as “Leading Change” as participants discussed topics ranging from respect, bullying and harassment, diversity and inclusion, recruiting and employee retention, and organizational change confronting women in law enforcement.

This is the first time the international conference, now in its 56th year, was held in Calgary. The International Association of Women Police was established in Los Angeles in 1915 with the aim

of providing professional development, mentoring and training for female law enforcement officers. The organization has members in more than 60 countries as delegates heard from speakers from police services in countries such as Guyana, Norway, Bangladesh, Ukraine, Ghana, Australia, New Zealand amongst others.

In an interview with the Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Sheilla Kessie Abayie-Buckman, who also attended this year’s forum, applauded organisers of the conference for their dedication in providing a networking opportunity for female officers. “I hope that participants impact change within their organizations.

The conference was started in 1915 and it was built to empower, support and build up women in police organizations,” said DSP Sheilla Kessie AbayieBuckman in an interview with the Ghanaian News.

“This year’s conference focused on the policing world and how we can all lead change in our communities and workplace. I’ve been to a couple of conferences where you build friendships, you build mentorships and you build leadership,” she said.

“This year’s experience is an incredible one and I must also commend the efforts of the organisers for their wonderful work in putting up such a successful conference. As a participant, I believe we can learn from each other and network with each other. We must learn to move forward, lead that change and be accountable,” she added.

Rev Prof Frimpong-Manso Elected President Of Ghana Pentecostal And Charismatic Council Rev Prof Paul Yaw Frimpong-Manso has been elected President of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC).

Delegates of an ongoing national delegates conference at the Royal House Chapel in Accra overwhelmingly voted by hand to endorse the nomination of the General Superintendent of Assemblies of God Church.

The over 200 delegates overwhelmingly voted Rev Prof FrimpongManso as new President to replace Apostle Onyinah whose seven-

year tenure is ending this year.

His nomination by the National Executive Committee of the Council was put to the council’s national delegates conference today.

The General Secretary of the council, Rev Emmanuel T. Barrigah who announced Rev Prof Frimpong-Manso’s nomination described him as an effective communicator, proactive and pragmatic leader, who was leading his church to lead do great things, especially an expansion drive.

With the nomination out of the way, the President of the council, Rev Prof Kwadwo Opoku Nyinah, led delegates to discuss the voting method which the delegates accepted to be voting by hand rather than by ballot.

A date is yet to be set for the investiture of the new President.

In his acceptance speech, Rev Prof Frimpong-Manso said he was humbled by the confidence reposed in him.

The founding members of the council are The Christ Apostolic Church, the Apostolic Church, Church of Pentecost and the Assemblies of God Church. Daily Graphic

He then proceeded to Wesley College, Kumasi, to train as a teacher from 1978 to 1981.

He takes over from The Most Rev. Titus Kofi Awotwi Pratt who is due for superannuation [retirement] next month.

Dr. Boafo, who is also the immediate past Protestant Chaplain of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), was elected at the 10th Biennial and 48th Delegates Conference of the Methodist Church at Sekondi in the Western Region.

He polled a total of 223 votes as against his closet contender, Very Rev. AsamoahGyedu who gathered 104 votes.

All other nominees had 26 votes combined.

He was ordained on Sunday 27th August 1989 at the Wesley Cathedral, Sunyani.

Rt. Rev. Dr. Paul Boafo

KNUST Chaplaincy and other Ministries A candidate who obtains more than fifty percent of valid votes by delegates is duly elected to the position of a Presiding Bishop, pending induction to begin a six (6) year non-renewable term of office.

Whilst the Church congratulates Dr. Boafo on his election, it said the choice of the Presiding Bishop was made “after hours of prayers and waiting.”

Dr. Boafo was born at Asankrangwa in the Western Region of Ghana to a Roman Catholic couple Opanin Paul KwawBoafo of blessed memory and Madam Agatha AmaAsamoahBoafo.

The Presiding Bishop position The Presiding Bishop is the Head of The Methodist Church Ghana and exercises pastoral and spiritual oversight over the whole Church.

The Church’s Constitution and Standing Orders stipulate that, one needs to have served a minimum of twenty (20) continuous years after ordination as a Minister of the Church to qualify to be elected for the top post of the Church.

Paul was the foundation Superintendent Minister of the New Achimota Circuit in the Accra Diocese (1999-2001) and also served as Superintendent Minister of the Accra North Circuit, Adabraka (20012005).

He started school at the Asankrangwa Roman Catholic Primary in 1963.

Paul was enrolled in the Wa Experimental Primary School and later moved to other schools in Mangu, Kenyasi No 2, SefwiWiawso, and SefwiBekwai according to the itinerant ministry of his uncle.

It was from the Accra North Circuit that Paul was nominated by the Methodist Church Ghana to serve as the president Chaplain of KNUST. In addition to his primary work as chaplain, he has also been teaching at the Religious Studies Department of the University.

Paul has served either as chairman, secretary or member of a number of committees in the Church and at the KNUST. These include: the University Syllabus Review Committee of the Methodist University College Ghana; Health Services Management Board of KNUST; Queen Elizabeth II Hall Council – KNUST; Committee of University Ecumenical Chaplaincy Board KNUST Local Council of Churches, Kumasi.

CHOICES! Is It Good? Choosing Good, and Being Good!

Choose! Chose!! Chosen!!!

I remember this from about class/grade six when we learned present tense, past tense, and past participle tense.

We used to have fun with it and it made us member when we used the wrong tenses in our sentences. Other words were boring as they remained the same regardless of the tense of use; put and cut. ‘Choose’ is one of the fun words from that lesson I kept for a long time because at some point into adulthood I thought deeply about it and I continue to. This simple, subtle verb with its noun form, ‘choice’ are simple and big at the same time and if we give them some attention in our lives would start realizing some new, possibly sophisticated, fulfilling, and amazing results.

This universal experience is shared by people all around the world regardless of our background or circumstances.

We could make choice out of love or fear, hope or despair, like or hate. The root of our choice is even a choice, and we make any or all of these choices into good or into bad; into life or into death.

I am blessed to have a 3-year old. He’s constantly asking me questions – from dawn to dusk. I’m unsure where he

learned this, but each time after answering his questions he would finally ask me, ‘mom, is it good?’ I always try to be as candid as possible.

He’s usually expecting a yes or no answer, but I sometimes go further and explain myself as to why I say good or bad.

Why I started with these two backdrops? Life is so full of choices that we sometimes even forget we are making them. We are constantly presented with choices or we bump into them. Whatever the case, we live with them and they are inevitable. I can’t think of the amount of choices each of us makes in a day, but to me they’re uncountable. The Maker is so creative He made life filled with a wide variety, and out of free willwe get to make choices in the moments, minutes, hours, days, weeks, and years; it’s endless, and we make them consciously or unconsciously. They range from small, through medium, to big choices. We make them at the extreme ends or inbetween. I find that sometimes, we don’t even want to make a choice, for whatever reason.

However, not making a choice in itself is a choice.

As well, the choices we make have consequences on us and others, and we should choose

to be mindful of this and at the end of the day ask ourselves, ‘your name here, is it good?’

The Maker Himself has set before us ‘life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life; that both you and yours may life’ I believe life is a series of choices or decision we make and depending on that we must live with the result of that decision. Firstly, let me clear this out. Yes some of the circumstances we happen to find ourselves in are not our choices, but following from that when we get to the reasonability stage in life is our responsibility to make the choice to let or not let those circumstances define our choices. For example, Sarah could be born into a dysfunctional family.

However, once sherealizes she’s here and finds herself in the situation it’s her choice to stick to that or break away from it. This choice will trickle down to the generations after her. Other circumstances such as our race, creed, family, place of birth, financial wealth, and health, among others. No one has a choice over this, but we can let any of these make or break us. Some choices aren’t really substantial; what car to drive, and what team to support. Other choices may

new employed graduates, we choose to spend our income makeup and unnecessary fashion or we choose to pay off our student loans, learn the responsibility of paying rent by supporting our parents in their payments while we still live with them. We choose to throw anything into our mouths and stomach or be vigilant on what we eat and our lifestyles so we can live healthier and kind. We choose to be empathetic with those who are fleeing into our country for safety or we be wicked minded, selfish, and show them hate. We choose to judge and condemn others without caring to know their situation or understanding them, or we choose to sympathize, hear them out, All of these choices stare us and love them. in the face daily. We cannot control the world but we can influence it by how we respond We all have complained at to or react to various situations some point that the world is around us. We choose to too wicked now; that there is communicate and make things no good news on the news; work again in our marriages, that things must change. We or we choose to go partying to are right. Things must change, help us forget our woes, which and we are the change. When could lead us into death and we need to make a choice, our children without parents. remember,‘your name here, We choose to be impatient and is it good?’ this will help you hostile on the road, leading to be more fulfilled and make the road rage and possible accident world a better place by passing and death, or we choose to it on to our circles of influence, gentle and calm and move on especially, the children. with our beautiful lives. As seem subtly unimportant but I believe they are; what we eat; and what we wear. Yet, other choices are very significant and have long term effect on our lives and even others. The friends we choose, careers, who we marry, whether or not to live promiscuous life, have sex and get pregnant while we’re not married yet and further it with abortion. There is also the choice we make that matter for eternity. It is the choice of what we will do with Jesus Christ. That is a choice that will affect how we live our lives in the now and where we will spend eternity in the future, whether in heaven or in hell.

Dr Yaw Baah, General Secretary of Ghana Trades Union Congress, acknowledged the role of the religious organisations in health delivering services in Ghana.

He said although Ghana had done well in the last decades, especially in the life expectancy, which is currently between 63 years and 72 years and commended health service workers for the achievement.

He said since 2010, there had been no record on guinea worm infection and it

was a positive indicator, and said there was much more to be done in the health sector to achieve the goals.

He said another critical area that much was not achieved was the mental health and called on authorities to think about those who suffer mental health when planning for health for all, adding, “our mental health care must change”.

Dr Baah also called on the government to pay attention to training more Pharmacists to address the health problems of the people.

He said currently, the ratio of pharmacist-to-patient is 1:14,598, which he said encourages selfmedication and destruction of lives.

He, therefore, urged the government to refund the National Health Insurance Scheme since the future lied in there to achieve the aim.

The Secretary-General also advocated for using part of the GETFund to train

more health practitioners to help tackle the health issues of the citizens.

Mr Reynolds O. Tenkorang, General Secretary of HSWU said the day was set aside to celebrate the success of the Union and also highlight on members contributions towards quality healthcare delivery and challenges that confront member in pursuance of universal health coverage.

He said the theme for the celebration was appropriate and challenging, especially in this period where the majority of Ghanaians were finding it difficult to access quality health care due to economic and financial hardship.

He said although the World Health Organisation demanded that the enjoyment of healthcare by the citizens was a fundamental human right and not an opportunity, Ghana was still confronted with so challenges to create assessable, affordable and universal health care for all, hence,

the selection of the theme to remind the government as a responsibility to achieve Universal Health Coverage.

The Secretary-General said the progress towards Universal Health Coverage involved dealing with a range of complex challenges, including negotiation between different groups, organisations and the society over the allocation of health benefits and who should pay for these benefits.

“To this end, HSWU as a Health Sector Union is playing a crucial role in representing the views of its members, in its negotiations with Government and its Agencies pushing for a more equitable distribution of both the responsibility for funding the system and the implementation of their Collective Agreement.

He, therefore, commended all past Leaders of the Union whose toil and commitment have brought them that far. GNA

Ordination of Apostle Winnie P. A. Manu and Launching of a New Church in Shelburne

Welcome Home Evangelistic Ministries launched a new branch, Welcome Home Evangelistic Ministries, Faith Assembly, in Shelburne, on July 29th, 2018.

In attendance were Councilor Steve Anderson, Alethia O’Hara Stephenson, and Mikal Archer, who are both standing for election in Shelburne and representatives from the Shelburne Police department.

Pastor Winnie P. A. Manu, the founder and General Overseer of this ministry, was also ordained as an Apostle and consecrated as a Bishop of Ghana by the Evangelical Christian Church in Canada (ECCiC).

Apostle and Bishop Karen Dixson from ECCiC has the the honour of performing the ceremonies.

The event was followed by a community BBQ. The church was full to capacity with church members, friends, family and members from the community.

It was indeed a memorable and a historic day.

Thanks to all who came to celebrate this momentous day with us.

By Joe Kingsley Eyiah One of the dynamic ethnic associations of the Ghanaian Community in TorontoCanada, the Becheman Association on May 15 and June 8, 2018 donated seven bales of bed sheets and blankets as well as some mattresses and puffers for asthma to the Becheman Hospital in Ghana.

The hospital items were presented to the hospital on behalf of the association

by Sister Joyce Boakye of Toronto and Mr. Kwabena Sarpong of Kumasi during two separate functions. The materials were received by the resident doctor of the hospital, Dr. Agyei Darko.

In a word of commitment, the Becheman Association of Toronto promised to adopt a ward at the hospital and fully furnish it under the name: Canadian Ward!

National Ethnic Press & Media Council of Canada (NEPMCC) opens booth at Canadian Exhibition (CNE) 2018

The ribbon cutting of the booth of the National Ethnic Press & Media Council of Canada (NEPMCC) at the Canadian national Exhibition (CNE) took place on Saturday,August 18, 2018. It was the 140th year of CNE which was founded in1879.

CNE was originally known as Toronto Industrial Exhibition (TIE) and the name was changed in 1912. From 1942 to 1946 there was no exhibition due to the World

War II in addition to one year that was used to clean up the grounds and buildings.

Some of the attractions at this year’s exhibition were Indoor Lantern Festival (lanterns stand stories-high in stature and create a luminous kaleidoscope of color). The display took 60 days of travel from China to CNE, International Sand Sculpting competition, the President’s Choice Super Dogs show, as cont’d on pg. 41

Frankly Speaking Seven Banks collapse in Ghana in a Year…and counting!

By: Dr. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB Some very frightening developments are going on in the financial sector in our beloved country, Ghana.

They are the hurricanes, tornadoes or tsunamis that are hitting the Banking Sector in Ghana, and they are falling and collapsing like dominoes.

For a start and in the interest of full disclosure, I must point out that I am neither an economist nor a banker. In that sense I am not going to bother myself with the technicalities of the operations of the banking sector in Ghana.

I am writing today as a concerned citizen of the Land of Our Birth where some people have arrogated unto themselves the power to control this very sensitive organ of the Ghanaian economy with a shameful monopoly over its operations. They have been enjoying undeserved booty and largesse from this sensitive sector of the Ghanaian economy. And sadly, their selfish desires and modus operandi have resulted in very serious repercussions that have impact on all of us.

I am therefore not going to burden myself and my readers with any unnecessary financial and economic jargons. I am going to examine the official public statements that those that are supposed to be the experts in this field in Ghana, charged with managing that sector, have

said publicly.

Over the past one year, as many as seven Banks have collapsed in Ghana, all them locally owned. First to fail in August 2017, were two Banks, Capital Bank, in which popular preacher Bishop Mensah Otabil, General Overseer of International Central Gospel Church, was a major shareholder, and Unique Bank, popularly known as UT Bank that was owned

by Prince Kofi Amoabeng.

Exactly a year to the day, on 1st August, 2018, theGovernor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison announced that the Central Bank has collapsed five locally-owned Banks and merged them into a Consolidated Bank of Ghana Limited.The banks are BEIGE, Sovereign, Construction, UniBank and Royal Bank. The Bank of Ghana said that the move follows the insolvency of the five banks after investigations by Bank of Ghana (BoG).

What got me concerned, angry, and provoked

this article was the announcement by the Bank of Ghana that Ghanaian taxpayers’ money was going to be used by the government to issue a bond totaling GHc5.6 billion to cater for bad assets of the four banks. Their explanation was that two of the collapsed Banks,Unibank and Royal Bank were under capitalised and that those banks were beyond rehabilitation.On Royal Bank, he said that their nonperforming loans were high whilst Sovereign Bank’s license, he said was granted under suspicious act.

Really?? Who granted the license in the first place?

Why are the people who are in charge of issuing licenses to these Banks from the Bank of Ghana not being punished?

I have read through most of the statements that the Central Bank officials and other financial commentators have issued on these worrying developments.Let me be upfront and say that though the announced reasons of the failure of the first two banks, Capital and UT were said to be due to significant capital deficiencies, the underlying reason seems to be very poor corporate governance practices within these institutions.

It was reported that some shareholdersplayed very dominant roles and exerted undue influence on management of the

The international stage just across the NEPMCC booth was where the speeches after the ribbon cutting took place. Cultural displays from various countries were performed there.

According to Thomas Saras, NEPMCC has been attending CNE for 38 years. It is the only Press Council of its kind in all over the world.

NEPMCC is a media organization, nonprofit, nongovernmental with over 750-member

publications, printing in about 110 languages along with a number of radio and television stations, websites, TV producers, directors and journalist across Canada.

As a result, the international institution placed a notice on its website abrogating all relationships with the bank, and this led to most of the foreign lenders cutting off their credit lines to the bank and recalling their credits; thereby creating serious liquidity squeeze to the bank On the newly-collapsed five Banks, Sovereign Bank, Beige Bank, uniBank, Construction Bank and The Royal Bank, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana stated that they were “having liquidity challenges and efforts to keep their heads above water have yielded no fruitful results”, a reason they have been consolidated. The question that ordinary people like myself are asking is: when did the Bank of Ghana know about these Banking difficulties and what did they do about them earlier to straighten them up and avoid their ultimate collapse? It looks like the Bank of Ghana is trying to absolve itself from blame although it has the primary supervisory role over the private Banks. The Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Elsie Awadzi told the media that the Central Bank was considering barring culpable directors of the collapsed banks from operating in the Ghanaian financial sector. “We are working very hard on submitting a dossier on each of these banks to the law enforcement agencies ... to further investigate criminal behaviour or what could potentially be criminal behaviour and to prosecute,” Awadzi said in an interview in Accra, without naming any of the individuals under investigation.

Again my question is: what responsibility are the officials at the Bank of Ghana who were sleeping on their supervisory jobs taking on this issue? My simple and elementary understanding of corporate governance describes “the framework of rules, relationships, systems and processes within and by which authority is exercised and controlled within corporations.

It encompasses the mechanisms by which banks, and those in control, are held to account”. Why are these simple rules of corporate governance not applied when it comes to the running and control of the Ghanaian Banking sector?

The collapse of these indigenous banks is very worrying against the background that the developments are significant setbacks to effort aimed at promoting indigenous Ghanaians to take control of our economy by building strong local institutions. The history of bank failure in Ghana dates as far back as 2000 when

The most predominant among them all is Credit risk which is bringing most local banks on their knees as a result of failure to follow due processes in credit delivery, inadequate monitoring mechanism in place coupled with selfseeking interest staff and inexperience credit officers.

It is common knowledge in Ghana that many highly placed and well-connected public officials contract huge loans from some of these private Banks, and sometimes state-owned banks and refuse to pay with no consequences because they are highly connected to the political elite.

Remember the collapse of Merchant Bank where it was alleged that the brother of a former President took a loan of over 600 million dollars and reused to pay?

Nothing was done to this guy and the Bank was left to collapse.

What we are witnessing with the collapse of these local Ghanaian Banks is only a microcosm of how Ghanaian society works and how we manage our institutions. I invite readers to point to one institution in Ghana, public or private that works to perfection. We need to sit up. Today it is the Banks that are on the chopping board. Which institutions will follow next…and soon? If public officials that are charged with the responsibility of managing or supervising entities in whatever sector sleep on the job and abandon their responsibilities, and suffer no reprisals when trouble strikes, we are doomed.

They lost fingers entering Canada, then what happened?

By Jessica Murphy BBC News, Winnipeg They worry about the growing fractious debate about the migrants crossing into Canada, about related costs and the need to do more to secure the borders.

Seidu Mohammed and Razak Iyal nearly died in 2016 while sneaking across the Canada-US border during a frigid late December, hoping to gain asylum. Their experience made them the public faces of a wave of migrants to Canada who followed soon after.

“[Immigrants and refugees] are hardworking people,” says Mohammed. “We are not criminals. We are here for a new life.”

It’s a warm, late summer evening under a wide prairie sky, and Seidu Mohammed is in his element.

The 26-year-old is on a football pitch, a defender at ease on the field, playing on a high-level amateur team in the Manitoba Major Soccer League.

The federal government is under pressure to suspend the Safe Third Country Agreement with the United States, under which refugee claimants are required to request protection in the first safe country they arrive in.

A one-time professional player from Ghana, his career was derailed when he was outed as bisexual while training in Brazil in 2014.

Crossing between border points allows asylum seekers to circumvent that part of the agreement and to ask for refugee status in Canada.

He never returned home, fearing persecution for his sexuality in his country, and instead starting on a fateful journey that brought him to a Minneapolis bus station on Christmas Eve, 2016.

There he met Razak Iyal, 36, a fellow Ghanaian who had fled the west African nation when a family dispute over his father’s estate turned violent.

Both men were facing deportation back to Ghana after being denied refugee status in the US. Instead they risked crossing into Canada, finding themselves struggling through a waist-deep field of snow in the night-time bid to cross the boundary between southern Manitoba and northern Minnesota.

They spent 10 hours outside, poorly dressed for the brutally cold winter landscape, wandering near a single-lane highway surrounded by farm fields, until a transport truck stopped to offer assistance.

Both had their fingers amputated due to frostbite and spent the next three months in hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The experience has brought the one-time strangers, born ten years apart in Accra, Ghana’s capital, close.

“It’s coincidence we are from the same city, same area, same community, but we never met before [that night],” Mohammed says, sitting on a sofa in Iyal’s modest apartment in central Winnipeg.

“We are like brothers, not friends.”

Says Iyal: “We go beyond friendship now.”

Over 30,000 other asylum seekers have followed in Mohammed and Iyal’s footsteps, illegally crossing the border before turning themselves over to authorities to make refugee claims.

The number of migrants has dropped since last summer, though just over 1,600 people still crossed in July.

The sheer number of asylum seekers coming in over roughly the last 18 months has strained the resources of government and community organisations, especially in Quebec and Ontario.

Ontario is demanding C$200m ($152m; £119m) from the federal government to cover related costs. In Toronto, thousands are being housed in emergency shelters and some 400 asylum seekers have been temporarily placed in hotels and motels in and around the city.

A recent poll indicated that two-thirds of Canadians felt the current situation constituted a “crisis” - that the country’s ability to handle to newcomers was stretched to the limit.

There are over 200,000 pending asylum claims, and the wait for hearings by Canada’s refugee board have edged up to an average of twenty months.

Of the fraction of cases that have been processed, just less than half have been accepted by Canada as refugees.

The Trudeau government has always openly welcomed refugees and immigrants into the country. But they began to temper their message, warning that seeking asylum is not a “free ticket” into Canada as more and more migrants began arriving at the border.

Both Mohammed and Iyal were granted refugee status last year.

Both Mohammed and Iyal were in the US before travelling to Canada and, under the accord, couldn’t request asylum at an official border crossing. But there is a loophole: a claim can be treated by Canada once the asylum seeker is on Canadian soil.

Iyal says without the programme - which is meant to avoid so-called “asylum shopping” between countries but is also the reason asylum seekers are avoiding formal border points - it would be safer for refugees crossing into Canada.

“We could have gone straight to the border, without struggling, without [almost] freezing to death,” he says.

The pair are adapting to life with the limitations of having lost fingers to the cold.

Eating, dressing, paying for the bus, signing documents - these are all small daily challenges.

Mohammed has switched to snap-button over buttonup shirts He practiced putting on socks over and over until he could do it on his own.

He is considering an additional surgery offered by his doctors to open up part of his hand to allow him some grip.

Both still need help lacing their shoes, Iyal at the mosque, or Mohammed on the pitch.

Iyal is thankful he still has one thumb, which gives him some dexterity.

“Don’t think about what happened to you,” he says.

“Think about your future. We always think about our future, what we can do to contribute to this country.”

Mohammed still finds himself in shock at the loss of his fingers.

“That time when we were in the hospital, we were crying, we were feeling sad, like ‘how are you going to survive like this?’” he says.

“But God has done a lot for us in our life for the pastyear-and-a-half.”

Lipton approached the three men and demanded her iphone back and one of them admitted they had purchased the phone for 80 dollars earlier in the morning. She showed them the new pass code to unlock the phone, the men knew it was hers and gave the phone back to Lipton. with all these information given you, you must be careful about what type of phone you use in this advanced technological age, know how to use those phones and be alert that a big brother somewhere might be watching and listening to your conversation so watch who you talk to and what you say.

Much has happened in the months between since their release from hospital.

Both were recently fitted with prosthetics, which they are learning to use.

Mohammed attended his first Pride parade, where he said seeing the LGBT community gathered together made him feel like “this is a safe place”.

He has spent some time coaching youth football.

Iyal is taking business classes, hoping to launch an electronics business, like the one he had back in Ghana, and hire refugees, and he hopes to one day reunite with the wife he left behind.

They have found a close community of friends in Winnipeg, many of whom are also immigrants or refugees.

A play, “Boundary Avenue”, was produced based on their journey. A poster signed by the cast hangs on Iyal’s wall.

Weight loss: Ready to change your habits?

Many disease states are affected or brought on by being overweight or obese. Many times we all decide that we need to lose weight and sometimes we plunge into a weight loss program. In this article, we will review some questions that you need to answer before you decide to lose weight.

Are you motivated to lose weight? Is your weightloss goal realistic?

Answer these questions and more to make sure you’re ready to start a weight-loss program — and know what steps to take if you aren’t quite there.

Your weight-loss success depends in large part on your readiness to take on the challenge. If you jump in before you’re ready, your weight-loss plan might buckle under the first challenge.

Use these questions to assess your weight-loss readiness.

1. Are you motivated to make long-term lifestyle changes?

Successful weight loss depends on permanent lifestyle changes, such as eating healthy foods and including physical

activity in your daily routine. That could represent a significant departure from your current lifestyle.

Be honest.

Knowing that you need to make changes in your life and actually doing it are two different things. You might need to overhaul your diet so that you’re eating more whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lowfat dairy products, for example. You’ll also need to find time for physical activity, ideally at least 30 to 45 minutes — or more — nearly every day of the week.

Whether your motivation for undertaking these changes is better health, improved appearance or simply feeling better about yourself, find your motivation and focus on it.

If you’re dealing with major life events, such as marital problems, job stress, illness or financial worries, you might not want to add the challenge of overhauling your eating and exercise habits.

Instead, consider giving your life a chance to calm down before you launch your weight-loss program.

3. Do you have a realistic picture of how much weight you’ll lose and how quickly?

Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is a lifelong process. Start by making sure your weight-loss goal is safe and realistic — such as losing 10 percent of your current weight. Then aim to lose 1 to 2 pounds (0.5 to 1 kilogram) a week until you reach your goal.

This means burning 500 to 1,000 calories more than you consume each day — through diet, exercise or both.

You might lose weight more quickly if you change your habits significantly. Be careful, though. Radical changes

After being introduced to the pair, the team behind the play felt compelled to tell their story. They spent hours interviewing them, and Iyal and Mohammed eventually collaborated on the final script and production of the piece.

Iyal is a frequent volunteer at the Canadian Muslim Women’s Institute, which has a donation centre that many asylum seekers visit for basic necessities, from

clothing to furniture.

Yasmin Ali, president of the organisation, says a number men, including Iyal, began to use their site as a meeting place and eventually decided to put themselves to work as volunteers.

“It’s amazing to see what [Iyal] can do - lift things, move things.

She said the two have become leaders in the community of newcomers, shepherding others through the process of settling into Canada.

Still, both are frustrated at their challenges finding permanent work.

“I lost my fingers, I didn’t lose my mind,” says Iyal.

“I want to contribute to this country, I want to pay my taxes.”

He says he, Mohammed, and the fellow migrant friends they’ve made frequently think about the lives they left behind.

“We’re always happy we are here, especially that we are alive,” he says.

“We all miss our parents, we all miss our old friends, we all miss our siblings, we miss our wives, but I’m still happy that I’m here, alive.”

5. Do you have support and accountability?

Any weight-loss program can be difficult.

You might face moments of temptation or become disheartened.

Having someone in your corner to offer encouragement can help. If you don’t have friends or loved ones you can rely on for positive help, consider joining a weight-loss support group.

Town Hall Meeting to discuss the Toronto Police Gun Violence Reduction Strategy held at the Driftwood Community Center From Joe Kingsley Eyiah The Toronto Police 31 Division and community partners of Jane and Finch Support Network, the City of Toronto and the Toronto Community Housing held a Town Hall Meeting on August 21, 2018 to discuss the Toronto Police gun violence reduction strategy to combat the rise in shooting in the municipality.

The meeting which took place at the Driftwood Community Centre at 4401 Jane Street in Toronto was attended by officers from the 31 Division, politicians, voluntary (social) organizations, the City of Toronto, community activists Faith groups and residents of the Jane and Finch area.

Also present were many local news media including the Ghanaian News.

In his address, Constable Jen Rae of 31 Division pointed out that the Police is just one piece of the solution to the gun violence in the municipality.

He said, “we are always talking about the situation but we need partnership to stop the gun violence.”

The officer then went on to outline

the police gun violence reduction strategy put in place by 31 Division to fight shooting in the area. That, the 31 Division has deployed 2 platoons for 12hour-shift and 3 platoons for 10hour-shift. Thus, 14 officers in pairs patrolling from Shoreham to Sheppard along the Jane Street daily to improve safety/security in the community.

In other contributions, some community activists lamented the lack of provision of adequate social amenities and programs for the youth in the neighbourhood. They wondered how much of the millions of dollars budgeted for the policing of the neighbourhood goes into the provision of social intervention programs for the neighbourhood.

During question and answer time, Mr. Knia Singh, a lawyer who is running for Mayor in the City of Toronto this October, asked the Police to clarify between their use of the terms, ‘gun violence’ which involved some disgruntled individuals and ‘gang violence’ which is more organized

by Bisa Kdei who performed hit songs such as “Mansa”,”Saa”, “Metanfo” and so on, plus his latest single “Asew”. The weather was beautiful, the atmosphere uplifting and the unity was unshakable. Those who were in attendance enjoyed themselves to the fullest.

The Police explained that gang violence is the domain of organized crime which could be traced by them unlike gun violence which might be carried out not necessarily by gangs but also by individuals not known to the Police at all. The Police will need tips from the neighbourhood in order to apprehend culprits involved in such violence. Hence the need for strong Police neighbourhood committees.

The Ghanaian News also questioned the inadequate publicity of such important meeting for the public which undermined full participation of residents of area as well as interested neighbourhood groups. In answer to the

poor communication surrounding the Town Hall Meeting, the officer from 31 Division said the Police was also invited to the meeting. The organizers of the Town Hall Meeting eventually took the blame for the poor communication and apologized to the public.

They then called for great cooperation from the Toronto Community Housing and effective collaboration with Jane and Finch Network as well as Faith groups to develop and implement social intervention programs to keep the youth in area away from gun violence.

Other politicians present at the function included Mr. Anthony Perruzza, City of Toronto Councillor; and Ms. Deanna Sgro, a candidate for Toronto City Council.

Toronto-Ghanaian Seventh-Day Adventist Church celebrates 25th Anniversary (1993-2018)

The Toronto-Ghanaian Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church has celebrated its 25th Anniversary from August 3rd to 18th, 2018.

Great was joy, praises, celebration, testimonies, reflections and many others at 285 Attwell Drive, Toronto, Ontario, Canada where the church is located. The theme for the remarkable eventful celebrations was “By His Faithfulness”.

Various activities were planned from February and ended with the grand finale in three Sabbaths of August.

The first Sabbath of August 4th was a musical celebration which was followed by a special anniversary CD launching. Pastor Dr. Kwabena Donkor (first Church Pastor), currently the Associate Director of Biblical Research Institute of the General Conference of Seventhday Adventist Church, Headquarters USA was the speaker during the musical celebration.

On Sunday, August 5th there was a picnic and soccer tournament which featured the hosting Churches (Toronto-

Ghanaian and Heritage Ghanaian) and the Columbus Ghanaian SDA soccer team.

The second Sabbath of August 11th focused on historical reflections.

PALMNUT SOUP

GROUNDNUT SOUP

Ingredients

Ingredients:

2 tins of plam nuts paste

1/2 kilo Chicken or beef 50g Tomato puree 4 Pieces Yellow pepper 2 Stock cubes 2 tsp Mill ginger & garlic 70 g Okro 250g Groundnut paste (peanut better) 50g Onions 10g Kpakpo shito 1/2 ltr Water 1 spring local mint

2 large tomatoes 1 large size onion chopped salt and pepper to taste 500g fish and or meat 2 small size salted fish (optional) 1 tablet cabe maggie

Method:

8 large Okro (optional)

1. Clean and cut chicken 2. Season and steam for 20 minutes 3. Add all ingredients except groundnut paste 4. Mix groundnut paste with 1/2 liter water.

5. Cook paste in clean saucepan, until oil comes on top and leaves the side of the pan 6. Add the remaining water to the cook pasted 7. Add the mixture to the steamed chicken 8. Correct the seasoning, reduce heat and allow to simmer for 15 minutes 9. Add okro and other vegetables

4 large garden eggs (optional)

Method 1.Prepare fish/meat, chopped onions, salt and tomatoes and simmer 2. Mix palm nut paste with warm water and strain the liquid through a strainer.

3. Add liquid to the simmered meat/fish and the other vegeables and spices.

Accompaniment: Fufu, Banku, Kokonte or Kelewele

Note: Beef, Fish and Crobs could be used.

4. Allow the soup to simmer to the desired thinkness.

5. Skim off the excess oil from the top of the soup

MASHED RIPE PLANTAIN (Otor)

6. Take it off the fire, serve with fufu, banku, kenkey, rice, yam etc.

Ingredients 4 fingers half ripe plantain

YAM BALLS

5g groundnut paste 1/4 teaspoonful ground pepper 1 large onion 2 tablespoonful palm oil Salt to taste Method 1.

Peel the plantain into a saucepan

2.

Add water and salt to it and boil

3.

After 20 minutes, remove it from the fire and drain the water

4.

Grind pepper, onion and salt

5.

Add boiled ripe plantain and mix together

6.

Add groundnut paste and mix

7.

Put palm oil on fire, add chopped onions

8.

When the oil with the onion is well cooked, pur it onto the mashed plantain and mix altogether using a wooden spoon.

9.

Serve with eggs or avocado

JOLLOF RICE Ingredients 400g - Rice 200g - Onions 2 tbsp - Powdered Shrimps 400g - Fresh Tomatoes (Blend) 1/4 ltr. - Cooking Oil 1 ltr. - Water 200g - Tomato Puree 2 Stock Cube 1 tbsp Powdered Pepper 1/2 tbsp Mix Spice 1 tbsp Mill Ginger/Garlic Salt to taste Method: 1. Prepare tomato gravy with cooking oil by adding chopped onions, tomato puree and shrimps powder.

2. Add mill ginger and garlic with all dry ingredients 3. Cover to cook for 5 minutes 4. Add water to the gravy and leave to boil 5. Add rice, stir and correct the seasoning and cover to cook for 15 minutes.

ACCOMPANIMENT: a. Grilled Chicken, Meat or Fish gravy b. Boiled vegetable or salad

Ingredients 250g Yam 50g Margarine 1 or 1/2 Egg Yolk beaten 1 tlsp Milk Pepper, Salt, grated Nutmeg (to taste) Egg and bread crumbs for coating Oil for deep frying Method 1. Boil yam thoroughly till cooked, drain and mash to get a smooth result 2. Add margarine while still hot 3. Add pepper salt and grated nutmeg 4. Add egg, malk if mxture is dry 5. Divide them into pieces and dredge with flour 6. Roll into balls and coat with eff and breadcrumbs 7. Fry in deep-frying until golden brown 8. Drain and serve KAKLO Ingredients 400g - Riped Plantain (soft) 100g - Onion 50gm - Wheat Flour 1/2 tbsp - Salt 1 tbsp - Cayenne Pepper 1/2 tbsp - Mill Ginger 2 tbsp - Sugar Method 1. Wash and peel plantain 2. Blend into a pulp 3. Add mixed spice and mill ginger and gradually incorporate in flour.

4. Add sugar and salt 5. Scoop and fry in moderately hot oil until golden brown in color 6. Drain and place on a kitchen paper.

ACCOMPANIMENT: Bambara Beans, Red Red or Bean Stew

Presiding Archbishop of Shiloh United Church of Christ Apostolic Worldwide, Ghana and West Africa. The officiating Ministers were Archbishop-elect Van Dyke kofi Noah, Minnesota, US, Bishop Abraham Bankam Kwofie, Ghana and Rev. Kwame Osei Hyeamang also of the US. The service began with an opening prayer by Brother Ben Agbanti followed with powerful songs by the Praise & Worship Team. The officiating ministers were then ushered into the sanctuary with the processional hymn ‘’there shall be showers of blessings”.

The Service Leader (MC) Rev. Richmond Agyemang Boafo gave the welcome address with the Presiding Archbishop, His Eminence, the Most Reverend Dr. Samuel Richard Addae giving the prayer of invocation. A short video of the Bishop-elect from the humble beginning of the church to the present was shown. It was followed by reading of the profile of Bishopelect Rev Joe Bonnah. The Rhema choir then rendered a special song ministration.

Archbishop. As part of the solemn service, the Bishop-elect, Rev Joe Bonnah’s feet were washed, wiped, given a new pair of socks and shoes by the Presiding Archbishop with angelic songs sung in the background. Bishop-elect Rev. Joe Bonnah then signed his letter of elevation after which he was anointed with holy oil. The church representatives, Elder Kofi Serkyi and Kingsley Yiadom Boakye sat behind the Bishop-elect throughout the service till he was ordained as Bishop. The climax of the service was the solemn presentation of the Bishop’s vestments by the Presiding Archbishop and assisting Bishops to bishop Joe Bonnah much to the joy of the whole congregation. He was then presented to the church in his robes as a Bishop and was led to his seat .

The church then made a presentation to Bishop Bonnah. Bishop Bonnah’s wife was also honored and blessed by the Presiding Archbishop. The clergy and the entire congregation then took turns to congratulate Bishop Joe Bonnah. Seshie, the Ghana Consul-General in Toronto and many others.

Pastor Kwame Brobbey, the current church pastor in his closing remarks thanked all the church members for their great work throughout the 25 years since the church was . established. He exhorted the members to do more for Christ during the next 25 years if Christ should tarry and delay his second advent. The celebrations ended and members concluded that, “By His Faithfulness, we’ve come thus far.”

Reflective thinking is like the crock pot of the mind. It encourages your thoughts to simmer until they’re done. John Maxwell Without deep reflection one knows from daily life that one exists for other people. Albert Einstein Questions: Do you take time to think about past experiences and reflect on what could be done dif­ferently if you are ever faced with that situation again? If you regularly practiced reflective thinking for one year, how would your life and ministry be changed?

Be A Reflective Thinker In our thinking journey based on the Bible and John Maxwell’s two books “How Successful People Think”and “Thinking For A Change”,we have looked at what thinking is all about and what right and good thinking can do for us. We have so far looked at six different thinking skills that successfully godly people live with to make a lasting impact in their world. This month we will look at reflective thinking, specifically, how to embrace the lessons of reflective

thinking turns experience into insight.

7. Reflective thinking provides safety and security thinking.

Reflective thinking is vital to personal growth.

It involves review and evaluation.

Reflective thinking helps us learn from mistakes, decide what actions should be repeated and determine what should be changed.

Why not do both?

2. R e f l e c t i v e thinking helps you eliminate emotional baggage from your thoughts.

3. R e f l e c t i v e thinking makes you more confident in your decisionmaking.

How to increase your ability to think reflectively: 1. Schedule time in your calendar for reflective thinking.

2. Find a “thinking place” with a minimum of distraction.

3. Take time to review past experiences.

• How can I apply it to my life?

Peter and others failed God miserably, but eventually served Him effectively. Perhaps no New Testament leader realized more deeply his own failure than Peter (Luke 22:62).

Here are some observations about Peter, the reflective thinker: 1. He was a key leader of the disciples.

2. He followed Jesus at a distance.

3. H e fellowshipped with the wrong crowd.

4. He showed his cowardice.

5. He denied his Lord.

6. He realized his failure.

7. He wept bitterly.

8. He continued to gather with the other disciples.

9. He ran to visit the empty tomb.

10. He obeyed the master’s command to wait for the day of Pentecost.

11. He was filled with the Holy Spirit.

12. His cowardice was replaced with boldness.

13. He encouraged other believers to stand firm in the face of fiery trials.

14. He became a highly influential leader in the early Church.

Peter learned important lessons the hard way— from failing miserably.

Based on lessons learned from experience, he gave clear warnings to other believing leaders (1 Peter 1:13-16): 1. Gird your

minds.

Focus your thinking on Christ.

2. Guard your hearts.

Stay close to Christ and stay clean.

3. Guide your lifestyle. Imitate Christ in all of your conduct.

Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”—1 Peter 1:13-16 ESV

Reflective thinking is the only way to gain a true perspective and to learn important lessons from your experiences.

So take advantage of your reflective thinking skill!

CAF Dismisses Stripping Ghana Off AWCON Hosting Rights The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) have denied reports indicating Ghana have been stripped off the hosting rights for the 2018 Africa Women’s Nations Cup. Reports were rampant the continent’s football governing body had decided to revert its decision to hand Ghana the mandate to host the competition which begins on November 17 to December 1.

The reports further indicated Kenya had also reject an opportunity to host the competition after receiving the nod from CAF to host.

In a statement released by CAF on Monday, the Association claims there has not been any decision taken on the hosting rights of the competition hence Ghana still remain the host nation.

CAF also indicated a final decision would be taken after CAF’s general meeting on September 12.

The 2018 Ghanaian Community Town hall & Fund launching for the Ghanaian-Canadian Heritage Centre From Jonathan Annobil & Joe Kingsley Eyiah, Toronto All roads led to the Toronto Plaza Hotel, 1677 Wilson St., on Sunday August 12, 2018 as the GhanaianCanadian association of Ontario (GCAO) presented the fund launching for the Ghanaian-Canadian Heritage Centre.

Ghanaian-Canadians have come a long way to reach the decision of acquiring its own community center to house its Heritage center. The present executives under the dynamic leadership of Emmanuel Duodu should be commended for taking such initiative after past failures. The hall for the event was packed with the clergy from our community churches, chiefs, Ghanaian professional as well as ethnic associations and the youth in full attendance. This goes to show that the community is now in sync with the GCAO for the establishment of the Heritage Center as the clergy represented their church membersand the chiefs and queens also graced the function with their rich Ghanaian cultural pageantry.

The event started with Ms. Anna Owusu Prempeh giving the purpose of gathering after which Ms. Bella Tee was called upon to render the national anthems of Canada and Ghana. Ms. Anna Owusu Prempeh also led the gathering to sing “Yen Ara Asasie Ni” Among the dignitaries who spoke briefly at the event were Maria Augimeri who is the City Councilorfor Ward 9, York Centre, and MPP Tom Rakocevic for Humber River-Black Creek. They all promised to help us to achieve our aim of securing the Heritage Centre.

Mr. Emmanuel Duodu, President of GCAO gave a powerful speech about the merits of getting our own Heritage Centre and the efforts being put to make this dream a reality. Two service men in our community Detective Donald Yirenkyi of Regional Municipality of York Police Service and Cpl. George Mintah (Supply Technician of Canadian Forces Environment Medicine Establishment (CFEME) Toronto were praised at the event for raising the name of the community.

The youth of GCAO represented by Nana Kay Nti, Richie and Gabriel Odarteycame to express their views on the importance of the Heritage Centre.

who also supervises the Homework Club touted the impact the club has had on the students and invited some of the students to come and share their experiences. They were given thunderous applause.

Prof Joe Mensah of York University with the help of slides explained the population of Ghanaian-Canadians taken from statistics which he researched in Canada, Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area. Roco Acheampong, an aspiring municipal candidate in the impending elections also shared ideas on how to motivate the youth and there and then pledged an amount of $10,000 to the project.

He was followed by the 3- person Heritage Project Committee led by Emmanuel Quaye, Albert Aikins and Maud Tutu. They took the opportunity to explain their assignment of meeting with the city officials and report to GCAO and make the project a reality.

Osabarima La Kumi,a community leader and owner of Volta Dental Clinic, threw his support behind the Heritage Centre and also pledged a support of $10,000. John Bosco Deputy Consul General also spoke as the launching.

Hon. Thomas Seshie, Consul General of Ghana in Toronto, strongly encouraged Ghanaians living in Canada to cherish their Ghanaian heritage and teach their younger generation to be proud of it. He was of the opinion that Ghanaian Canadian Heritage Centre in the multicultural city of Canada, Toronto, will galvanize activities and services that Ghanaians will use to promote the heritage of Ghana in the mosaic society of Canada.

Hon. Seshiethen likened the launching of the Heritage Centre that very day in Toronto to the launching of the Ghana Heritage Book for the Diaspora by the Ghana Book Project also at the same day and same venue!

“Our heritage is very important and the documentation and preservation of our heritage is essential to our development as Ghanaians wherever we find ourselves in the world,” he concluded.

The fundraising segment was handled

by Elder Appiah Kubi of Sankofa Radio who pumped up the gathering to donate to make the project a reality.
