Youth are important agents in building the beyond aid agenda - Canadian High Commissioner By Elsie Appiah-Osei, Youth Bridge Foundation, Accra-Ghana

Her Excellency (H.E) Heather Cameron, the Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, has noted that the youth are important agents in building the beyond aid agenda as well as vital assets to influence global change. This, she says is important for the youth to have the chance now to come together, exchange ideas, share knowledge and dialogue through learning and friendship with the network built, being extended and sustained. “No one is ever too young to be a leader and to seek answers that could bring about change in the world. You are leaders now and we hope that this convergence will strengthen your leadership skills,” she said. H.E Cameron said this when she engaged with some35Canadian delegation drawn from Ontario and Nova Scotia who joined young leaders from the United States of America and 15 other African countries for this year’s African Youth and Governance Convergence (AYGC) held in Accra. She also had a side engagement at the breakfast meeting with theCanadian delegation. AYGC is the convergence of a four-tier transformational leadership programme for leadership grooming, cascade of mentorship, community impact, and networking for African and Diaspora youth. It is organised annually by

the Youth Bridge Foundation (YBF), a Non-Governmental Organisation focused on creating supportive platforms to challenge the creativity of the Youth, and to make available critical information and resources needed for total development. She said the Diaspora networks had become key drivers for economic growth and development, and therefore Diaspora relationships needed to be strengthened. She therefore admonished the youth to make the Sustainable Development Goals their agenda for accelerating growth and progress globally. H.E Cameron also advised the delegates to strengthen their peer to peer bond because they cont’d on pg. 59

Kofi Annan, Ghana’s Global icon and former UN Secretary General dies at 80 By: Dr. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB

Kofi Annan, the first Black African to lead the United Nations, has died at age 80 in a Swiss hospital in the early hours of Saturday, 18 August 2018,.Annan, who was born in Ghana in 1938, served as the seventh UN SecretaryGeneral, from 1997 to 2006, and was the first to rise from within the ranks of the United Nations staff.

Kofi Annan

He was elected to the office world body’s peacekeeping in 1996 at a time when the operations were overstretched,

the vital US commitment to the UN was at a dangerous low and there was a widespread feeling that the UN had lost its way. A likable and popular choice as Secretary General, Annan was a firm believer in multilateral solutions, but also recognised that the UN had to be revitalised. He served as Secretary-General at a time when worries about the Cold War were replaced by threats of global terrorism, and his efforts to combat those threats cont’d on pg. 20
