Meteors Wins Ghanaian-Canadian League Play-offs

It was a fun-fair galore at the Weston Lions Park at 2125 Lawrence Avenue in Toronto, Ontario, on the 24 th of September 2017, when participating teams in the just ended 2017 summer season of the Ghanaian-Canadian Soccer League brought the much anticipated summer games within the Ghanaian-Canadian community to a successful end.

AKWAABA, H.E.AyikoiOtoo: New Ghana High Commissioner to Canada We carry on our front page in this edition the presentation of the Letters of Credence of the new Ghana High Commissioner to Canada, His Excellency AyikoiOtoo to the Governor General of Canada, His Excellency David Johnston. This ceremony officially signals the beginning of the tour of duty of the new High Commissioner.

It has been our honor at The Ghanaian Newsto welcome a number of High Commissioners from Ghana to our High Commission in Ottawa over the past twenty years. It has also been our honour, and sometimes with some disappointments, to welcome and to work with Consular Officers to the Ghana Consulate Offices in Toronto, the hub of the Ghanaian Community in Canada. At the national level from Ottawa, we have had the honour to welcome and work with H.E. Oliver Lawluvi as High Commissioner up till December, 2001, H. E. Odoi Sykes, from 2002 to 2006, Dr. Margaret Amoakohene from September 2006 to February 2009. Others have beenH. E. Dr. Richard Turkson from November 2009 to November 2011 (when he sadly passed away in his sleep at the Mission’s residence), H. E. Mr. Samuel Valis-Akyianu from 2012 to 2013 and recently Dr. SulleyGariba from February 2015 to January 2017.

And now…from September 2017, we welcome H. E. AyikoiOtoo to our Mission. In welcoming His Excellency to Canada, we at The Ghanaian News wish to underscore the fact that the Ghanaian Communities across Canada stand ready to work with him in his mission to not only to establish and improve the cordial relations between Ghana and Canada but to harness the potential of Ghanaians in the Diaspora towards national development in Ghana.

The Ghanaians Communities in Canada, have had causes to complain on numerous occasions about the negative attitudes of some staff at the Ghana Mission and most recently about the Consulate in Toronto. As a mouthpiece of the Community, we will spare no efforts in commending the Mission and Consulates when they do well to promote good and harmonious relations between the Missions and the Ghanaian communities across Canada.

We will equally spare no efforts either to draw the attention of the Heads of the Missions and their staff to attitudes and behaviors that do not augur well for the Missions’ image or the harnessing of the potentials of Canadians of Ghanaian origin to the national effort.

The staff of The Ghanaian News had the honor to travel to Ghana in July 2017, to participate in the second historic HomeComing Summit of Ghanaians in the Diaspora at which one Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry subjected the Conference participants, and Ghanaians in the Diaspora to a stinging tongue-lashing labeling us as “whiners”. Much has been said and written about this shameful and arrogant behavior of the said “honorable” Minister both in Ghana and abroad.

We do not want to belabour the point further but we are using it as a backdrop in welcoming the New High Commissioner to Canada as our way of emphasizing the point that Ghanaians in the Diaspora do not just “whine”. We are doers and shakers. We contribute more than our fair share to the development of the Land of Our Birth. All we demand is respect and cooperation and we will give the same back.

AKWAABA, Your Excellency. We look forward to working with you. Please brace yourself to our very nice weather. Winter will soon be here to formally and environmentally welcome you to Canada.

introduced to the Prime Minister of Canada.Letters of Credence are the official documents by which new Heads of Diplomatic missions are presented by their Head of State as their official representative.

Currently, there more than 170 Heads of Diplomatic Missions accredited to Canada.

His Excellency Joseph AyikoiOtoo was the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice in Ghana from February 2006. Thereafter, he set up his own chambers known as Otoo& Associate (Leo Chambers) in 2007 and became master thereof until his appointment as Ghana’s high Commissioner designate to Canada.

He has been an active member of the Ghana Bar Association (Greater Accra Branch) and has held the office of Assistant-Secretary before becoming the Regional Secretary and served under Nana Akufo-Addo (now President of the Republic of Ghana) who was then the Regional President. He later took over from Nana Akufo-Addo and became the Regional President.

Apart from serving in the GreaterAccra branchof the Ghana Bar association (GBA), he served as National Secretary for three consecutive terms unopposed from 1998-2001. During that period, he was a member of National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Ghana Bar association (GBA), Member of Council of Bar 19932001 (Highest Decision Body of the GBA) and also Member of General Legal Council (a body that regulates the legal profession of Ghana 19962001. He also served on many Bar Committees namely: Chairman: Publicity Committee, Member/ Secretary, Legal Committee of

the Bar, member-Human Rights Committee, Member-Training Committee and Member of the Martyrs Day Planning Committee.

Apart from being an academic, H.E. AyikoiOtoo is a political social commentator. He has served as a guest on a law program known as “Obonu Lawyer” at Obonu FM, a local FM stationin Accra for four years without honorarium. He was a regular panelist on Joy Newsfile program and he was frequently consulted by radio hosts on political and social, especially legal matters During the event, His Excellency the Right Hon. David Johnston lauded Ghana’s achievement in sustaining democracy in the country, ensuring participatory decision-making in local communities and reducing poverty. He recalled a visit to Ghana in 2013 which made a remarkable impression on him.

In a private meeting, His Excellency J. AyikoiOtoo thanked the Governor- General for the long standing cordial relations and sustained co-operation between the two countries. He again thanked the Governor -General for the support Canada is offering for Ghana’s “Planting of Food and Jobs” program and discussed the government’s flagship “One District One Factory” policy. The two also discussed cooperation in the energy sector as well as irrigation. The issue of Canada’s support for Kofi Annan Peacekeeping Centre was also discussed.

The High Commissioner is a Christian and married to Patricia Ayorkor Hanson-Mettle with adult children. His Excellency AyikoiOtoo was accompanied by his wife Patricia and the staff of the Mission in Ottawa as well as the staff of the Consulate in Toronto.

Boachie added: ‘As you are aware, recreation engages people and builds social cohesion, generating healthy, inclusive communities and it’s of this backdrop that I believe the creation of the Ghanaian-Canadian Soccer League has made community members feel an emotional connection to the places

that bring them enjoyment, making our recreation nodes truly a heart within our communities.’

Six (6) of the participating teams from the league [ Shatta FC, Presby FC, Meteors FC, Apostolic FC, Re-Union SC and JC United ] made it for the playoffs and it was Meteors FC who won by beating the 2017 Ghanaian-Canadian Soccer League Champions, Shatta FC in the finals of the play-offs at the Weston Lions Park.

Ghanaian-Canadian Soccer League is supported by Connecting Paths Canada; an organization with a variety of programmes to bring together AfricanCanadian youth for the development of their respective communities.

In addition to the portrait of Senator James Gladstone, who represents the role of Indigenous peoples in government, the Canada 150 note incorporates the artwork Owl’s Bouquet by acclaimed Inuit artist Kenojuak Ashevak and the distinctive Assomption sash, an important cultural symbol of the Métis people.

James Gladstoneor Akay-na-muka (his Blackfoot name) was a member of the Kainai First Nation(Blood Tr i b e ) . I n 1 9 5 8 , h e became Canada’s first senator of First Nations origin. He is also the first Indigenous person in Canada to appear as a portrait subject on a Bank of Canada note.

Gladstone committed himself to the betterment of Indigenous peoples.

At the time of his appointment to the Senate, he, like all Status Indians, did not yet have the right to vote. He advocated for this right, which was won in 1960, when the right to vote was extended to all Indigenous Canadians.

He also advocated for improved education, economic opportunities, equality and greater self-determination for Canada’s Indigenous peoples.

Gladstone served in the Senate until 1971, the year of his death. A bronze bust of Gladstone is displayed in the antechamber to the Senate in the Centre Block of Parliament Hill.

It shows him wearing a feathered headdress and acknowledges his significant contribution to the Senate and to Canada.

The distinctive pattern

featured across the top and bottom of the Canada 150 note is based on the Assomption sash, also known as the arrow sash.

The long, finger-woven sash, most commonly worntied around the waist, is part of a tradition integral to the history of Canada. Colourful sashes were worn by FrenchCanadian habitantsand became a hallmark of the voyageurs and fur traders, who carried them westward at the end of the 18th century.

Traders from the Hudson’s Bay and North West companies regularly offered the sashes as gifts to First Nation peoples, with whom they became popular adornments.

Since then, the sash has become an important cultural symbol of the Métis people and is the centrepiece of the “Order of the Sash” ceremony, during which a sash is presented to an individual in appreciation of a significant contribution to the Métis nation.

In the large window on the Canada 150 note is a metallic image based on Owl’s Bouquet, artwork byKenojuak Ashevak (1927–2013).

A member of the Order of Canada,Ashevak is perhaps the best-known Inuit artist. She lived and worked in Cape Dorset, Nunavut, the last territory to join Confederation in 1999.

Her work, which helped introduce Inuit art to the world, was produced in a wide variety of media, including drawings, prints, sculptures, textiles and even stained glass.

Ashevak’s distinctive artwork has been featured on Canadian stamps and coins but never before on a bank note.

Ashevak’s work was chosen for the Canada 150 note for its great aesthetic and security value—the owl lends itself perfectly as a metallic feature.

Ensuring that bank notes reflect Canada and our diverse society, culture and achievements is integral to the Bank’s formalized principles for bank note design.

These principles now serve as the foundation upon which visual content (theme, subject matter and images) is developed.

Ontario plans stiff new laws for drug-impaired drivers TORONTO - Ontario plans to introduce new penalties for drugimpaired drivers ahead of the legalization of recreational marijuana next July.

Premier Kathleen Wynne says there will be zero tolerance for youths aged 21 and under, novice drivers and all commercial drivers in Ontario who have a detectable presence of

drugs or alcohol in their system.

The province will increase all monetary penalties and suspensions for impaired driving offences.

The announcement comes after Ontario’s Liberal government announced its plan to distribute and sell recreational cannabis.

Wynne also announced the province will host

a fall summit with policing agencies, public health groups and other stakeholders to discuss Ontario’s marijuana legalization framework.

The Ontario government plans to sell marijuana in as many as 150 dedicated stores run by the province’s liquor control board and set the legal age to buy the drug at 19.

Another NPP promise fulfilled with new Ghana card – Nana Addo President Akufo-Addo has said the commencement of the production and distribution of the Ghana Card, an instant, free National ID card for all Ghanaians, is yet another indication that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is committed to their manifesto promises.

FOCUS Free Senior High School Education becomes a reality in Ghana

By Joe Kingsley Eyiah, OCT, Brookview MS, Toronto “At long last the battle is ended and our beloved country, Ghana, is free f o r e v e r. ” T h a t w a s how our first President Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah put it in his famous speech on the day that Ghana attained her independence (March 6, 1957) from British colonial rule!Now with the arrival of the free SHS in Ghana, we can say, “At long last the promise has become a reality and free SHS is here forever.”

Free SHS has been the dream of many a president of Ghana since the early 2000s in the light of affordable secondary school education to ALL CHILDREN in the country. I therefore personally congratulate Nana AkufoAddo for his political courage and financial commitment to making SHS free in Ghana at long last.

Both the Convention on the Rights of the Child (article 4) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (articles 2 and 13) “require that States undertake all appropriate legislative,

administrative and other measures to the maximum extent of their available resources for the implementation of education rights. There will always be fi scal constraints, but it is possible to manoeuvre to better allocate resources.”

(2000) Obviously, education is the biggest enterprise in any civilized society.

Granted the fact that education is one of the most important tool for national development it becomes the responsibility of any progressive government anywhere to provide and promote sound educational policies as well as infrastructure that will help its people to acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes that

enable them to develop their potentials. The founding President of Ghana, Dr. Nkrumah understood this very well.

He therefore expanded the opportunities for all Ghanaians to have some education. There was the mass education for adult Ghanaians who were above school-going age.

More importantly, the formal sector of education in Ghana then saw rapid development under President Nkrumah.

Since independence, we have had Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s Accelerated Development Plan of Education, which sought to expand rapidly recruitment into basic and secondary schools; the Prof. Alex K w ap o n g E d u cat i o n Review Committee, which brought about continuation schools in 1966, the Professor Dzobo Review Committee of 1974, which introduced the comprehensive junior secondary school (JSS) concept, and reform which began in 1987 as well as Kufour’s 2007 reform (the latest major changes in education) which sought to expose children

to literacy and numeracy, from the kindergarten level. The country has had to struggle with the duration of senior high school (SHS) education from 3 years policy of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to 4 years policy of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and back to 3 years (NDC).

The NPP and NDC are the two political parties which have been governing Ghana one after the other for the past twenty-four years.

However their different political ideologies to education in particular have denied Ghana a stable national policy in that sector of our national development.

The truth is that there are a lot of leaders who do not govern in the interests of their nations. Indeed, the education sector has suffered unnecessary at the expense of politics in most African countries.

Some African leaders loot their countries’ resources instead of managing those resources effectively to improve their education system. Also, the laxity in the Ghana Education Service has often created loopholes for looters in that sector. Hope Nana Addoh’s government will tighten up screws there!

I refer my readers to my “Open Letter to President Nana AkufoAddo” which was published on Ghanaweb on March 31, 2017. In that letter I specifically mentioned some “little foxes” in Ghana’s educational system as he was ready to implement his free SHS and restore allowances to teachers in training: “Oh, lest I forget! Mr. President, I think to make our free SHS more meaningful to the student, I would like to see more attention paid to the student at the primary school level to effectively lay a strong and formidable foundation for the student’s learning journey to the high school and beyond. Good! Do I hear you say yes? And that the teacher who facilitates learning in the classroom is more important here?

This brings me to the issue of allowances for teachers in training. I am afraid the allowance might attract ‘wrong’ people who love money more than teaching into the teaching professional.

I am talking from experience as a former teacher-trainer in Ghana.

Why not make loans and scholarships (from District Assemblies) accessible to teacher-

trainees and put more money rather into the salaries of teachers to enable trainees who successfully complete their teacher education to comfortably pay back their loans or work in the districts which supported them during their training?

Also, we need to ensure that candidates with the necessary entry requirements are picked by our Principals for the Teacher Training Colleges. Let us cut the ‘goldfields’ in the admission of teachertrainees to our Colleges where allowances become baits for insincerity and corrupt practices. Ouch!

Unfortunately, some heads of SHS have been already caught and apprehended for exploiting parents even with advent of the free SHS. We need to be more vigilant! There should not be playing of politics with this major policy in education. The nation stands to benefit greatly if the free SHS program is properly managed, sustained in the years to come and supported by all good-willing Ghanaians

12-year-old boy gains admission into SHS A 12-year-old boy won the heart of a cabinet minister for gaining admission into a senior high school with aggregate eight – but a Municipal Chief Executive, unenthused about the boy’s rare feat, rubbished a move by the media to bring the wonder kid into the limelight.

The boy was spotted among some first-year students at the Navrongo S enior H ig h S c h o ol (NAVASCO) when the Minister for Water and Sanitation and Member of Parliament (MP) for Navrongo Central, Joseph Kofi Adda, visited the school among some second-cycle institutions in the Upper East region to observe the implementation of the government’s feefree education policy.

A d d a , together with the Upper East Regional Minister, Rockson Ayine Bukari, was addressing the students in a hall, the boy, who mentioned his name as Jeremiah Ngambire and said he hailed from Pelungu in the Nabdam District, told Starr News in a whispered interview he was 12 years of age and that he gained admission this year on an aggregate eight obtained at the Lovely Home Academy, a private school in the Central region.

When Starr News took the boy to the dignitaries as they were about to leave the hall, an enthralled Kofi Adda held the boy warmly close and asked him what programme he had been admitted to pursue.

“Science,” he replied.

The minister, then, pulled out a complimentary card from his chest pocket and handed it out to the student. “Give this to your parents,” the MP said. “I want you to read medicine and be my doctor in the future,” he added as the hall smiled and cheered.

But the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kassena Nankana, Williams Aduum, shocked many after he dragged the media into a telephone row to dispute the relevance of a proposed publicity for the boy.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urges Canadian companies to seek fortune in China’s $5 trillion market TORONTO - Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is urging Canadian small- and mediumsized businesses to look beyond Canada’s borders and explore the US$5 trillion retail opportunity in China.

Trudeau is speaking at a Toronto conference today hosted by Chinese e-Commerce giant Alibaba, with politicians from all three levels of government in attendance.

Tory announces new measures to curb traffic congestion in Toronto

By Codi Wilson As part of his ongoing campaign to curb traffic congestion in the city, Mayor John Tory has announced a new suite of initiatives that he says will “build on the progress” the city has already made.

Speaking to reporters on Monday morning, the mayor outlined six new measures to help address traffic tieups in Toronto, including implementing two “quick clear teams” to monitor for cars blocking lanes on the Gardiner Expressway, Don Valley Parkway and other major roadways, and deploying full-time “traffic wardens” at key intersections following the success of a pilot project in 2016.

“The results of the pilot project are in and the pilot project worked. When officers were actively engaged in managing vehicles and pedestrians, we found a minimum of 90 per cent reduction in intersection blockage by vehicles and a seventy per cent reduction

in intersection blockage by pedestrians,” Tory said.

The mayor added that upcoming regulatory changes by the provincial government mean the city won’t have to use police officers to monitor intersections under the new program.

“We will be in a position to have under the Highway Traffic Act legally deployed people, who are not police officers but are rather… traffic warden or traffic management officers.

They will be deployed to those intersections to make sure on an ongoing, permanent basis we keep things moving and keep people safe,” Tory said.

The traffic wardens and quick clear teams are expected to be in place early next year.

Tory said he also plans to prevent hydro workers and other utility companies from blocking lanes during the day for non-emergency work.

“In the coming days, I will

be meeting with the officials of these companies, Toronto Hydro, gas companies, telecom companies, to discuss confining non-emergency work requiring lane closures to off-peak hours of 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.,” the mayor said.

“We are going to be sending the message loud and clear; this kind of emergency work cannot take place any longer during the day.”

Other measures outlined in Tory’s plan include sharing city traffic data with Waze, a community- based traffic app, beginning the installation of smart signals next month, and asking for a staff report on increasing fines for “trafficblocking offences.”

“I am determined to build on the progress we’ve made,” Tory said.

The mayor’s announcement comes as the city kicks off a new week-long traffic blitz.

Kay Livingstone Plaque Unveiled Creating the Templates of our Time

1,000 Ontario rental units lost since implementation of new housing rules: report TORONTO - At least 1,000 planned rental units in Ontario have been cancelled or converted to condominiums since the province introduced new rent control rules, a report released by a group representing rental-housing providers said as it warned of a supply crunch if the issue isn’t addressed.

The report, commissioned by the Federation of Rental-Housing Providers of Ontario and released Monday, said the Liberal government’s Fair Housing Plan has negatively impacted the province’s rental housing supply.

Before the introduction of the government legislation, 28,000 rental units were in the planning pipeline, but since the new rules were introduced 1,000 of those units have been cancelled or converted to condominiums, the report said.

On Sunday, September 24, 2017, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board represented

by Chair Dr. Richard Alway, MP Marco Mendicino and a number of distinguished guests attended the unveiling of a plaque honouring Kay Livingstone.

Born to an African American father who was from Georgia and an African Canadian mother, who had long roots in the Cayuga then Chatham area before the move to central Ontario, was a native of London, Ontario. Kay grew up in an activist household, since her parents worked on both a newspaper (The Dawn of Tomorrow founded in 1923) and an organization (Canadian League for the Advancement of Coloured People in 1924). She would have grown up knowing about WEB DuBois and Carter G. Woodson - the founder of Negro History Week, and about the wide range of contributions made by Africans globally including in Canada.

When her father died suddenly in 1931, Kay’s mother recruited all of her 7 children to keep the paper going. This experience opened up the world and the value of the performing arts which Kay pursued in school, taking her to Ottawa to study there. With WWII, Kay worked for the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, met a man from Antigua and married him. She soon began a radio show called the Kay Livingstone Show and brought that, along with motherhood when the family moved to Toronto.

The reason that I nominated Kay Livingstone for national historic recognition is due to the fact that she initiated so many cultural aspects of Canadian life and because she inspired so many women to take on leadership roles.

Through her efforts to reframe an organization called the Dilettantes into a more socially aware organization renamed the Canadian Negro Women’s A s s o c i a t i o n ( C A N E WA ) students ‘with promise’ were provided with scholarships and to fund the scholarships, something called the Calypso Carnival was launched. This was the precursor to Caribana, now in its 50th year. Kay also animated the women of CANEWA and it was they who went on to become the foundational board members and volunteers of the Ontario Black History Society, and, it was under her influence that the first celebration of Negro History Week took place in Toronto in the 1950s.

On a wider note, Kay was successful in pulling together the first National Congress of Black Women. Held at the Westbury Hotel in Toronto, the culmination of 18 months of planning, it brought together 200 Black women from coast to coast and organizational representation from the Colored Women’s Club (Montreal), the Negro Women’s Professional Club (Halifax), the Grand Order of the Eastern Star (Toronto) and many others to focus on “a serious consideration of the issues vital to the Black

community.”

After several subsequent conferences, the Congress of Black Women was created with national chapters.

For me, her impact on women like Aileen Williams, Penny Hodge, Phyllis Brooks and others who were there to mentor me in the ways of public service was the most meaningful contribution. While they are not here to enjoy and celebrate this milestone, the national designation of Kay Livingstone is important to all given what she accomplished in her short life and what she inspired in others. She had next hoped to organize a national conference of visible minority women but sadly passed away before realizing that dream. We can also credit her for coining that phrase, ‘visible minority’ and wonder how she might look at Canadian society now, now that the visible minority is soon to be the majority.

The plaque, while unveiled today to the delight of her descendants, women of the Congress of Black women and others, will be permanently installed in Bedford Park in the coming weeks, close to where she once resided.

The federation’s president, Jim Murphy, said Ontario needs 34,000 rental units built a year to keep pace with demand and it is currently falling 6,250 short each year.

“We need more supply, full stop,” Murphy said. “And we’ve got to encourage everyone, the industry included but also governments to come to the table with policies that will create the environment for new rental units” In April, the Ontario government announced what it called a comprehensive housing package aimed at cooling a red-hot real estate market.

Amongst the 16 measures were a 15 per cent non-resident speculation tax to be imposed on buyers in the Greater Golden Horseshoe area who are not citizens, permanent residents or Canadian corporations and expanded rent control that will applied to all private rental units, including those built after 1991, which were previously excluded.

According to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation data in the report, vacancy rates in the province have already fallen to 2.1 per cent across the province.

Murphy said both provincial and municipal governments could make policy and tax changes to help encourage developers to deliver more purpose-built rentals.

“The problem right now is that there has been uncertainty created because of that change and we’re starting to see cancellations of projects at a time when we need more supply,” he said.

Housing Minister Peter Milczyn said the province does not plan to change rules which cap annual rent increases.

“I am listening to the industry, monitoring the situation, but we’re taking our action, which was to ensure there’s fair rental policies for tenants and releasing surplus provincial lands to build more rental supply,” Milczyn said.

Milczyn said he is skeptical about the findings of the report, adding that over the past decade only about six per cent of housing starts in Ontario were for rental housing.

“Under the old rent control regime that wasn’t generating lots of purpose-built rental housing,” he said.

Criminality as a Determining factor in Sponsorship Eligibility Prospective immigrants, sponsors, and other people who submit applications to the Immigration must be aware that their criminal history could be a principal determinant of the success of their applications. Laws and regulations are in place to protect Canadian citizens and persons being sponsored to Canada.

Generally, a person with a criminal conviction will not be admitted into Canada, not even as a visitor. However, if a prescribed period has passed after the person has completed his sentence or committed the offence and the person was not convicted of a subsequent offence during that time, they may be deemed to have been rehabilitated.

As a protective measure, when a person is being sponsored to Canada, the Sponsorship Undertaking form (Form IMM 1344) requires the sponsor to indicate whether he or she is currently detained in jail, penitentiary or reformatory; whether he or she has been convicted of a sexual offence or

serious violent offence against anyone, or an offence causing bodily harm against someone who is or was related to him or her, or has made an attempt to commit such an offence; and whether the sponsor has been charged with an offence under an Act of Parliament punishable by a maximum term of imprisonment of at least 10 years. A “yes� response to any of the above questions puts the sponsor’s eligibility in question.

Criminality in Immigration context is a complex area.

The Apostrophe Catastrophe

By Thaddeus Ulzen MD With our last election behind us, we have new credible leadership or at least, that is the hope. In our country, what is the real role of leadership at this point in our history?

All our problems have a few root causes: Pervasive corruption, poor planning and the absence of political will to lead major transformation in the service of improving the living standards of the people to drive forward an equitable development agenda. In Ghana we lose conservatively, $5bn / year to many forms of graft.

So, do ideologies like liberal free enterprise or a social democratic agenda really matter, when the size of theft and the scope of governmental ineffectiveness is so great?

There are various levels of leaders.Head teachers, heads of university departments, heads of government agencies, transport yard foremen, local chiefs, market queens are all examples of different categories of leaders. The culture of leadership though, is set from the executive, judiciary and parliament.

At the local level, through municipal and traditional leaders, citizens actually feel the quality of leadership, as their children seek knowledge in dilapidated school blocks, on their underfunded small farms, in their fishing boats on plastic infested oceans and in hospitals with fake or no drugs.

In the midst of these daily realities, leaders of the current government spend valuable time that we the citizens pay for, trying to re-write and re-shape the past in a particular partisan image. They also run us off the roads daily because they are late for some really important event, where they will enjoy on our behalf. On one recent trip from Accra to Elmina, I was run off the road 8 times by single cars with flashing red and blue lights or motorcades of various sizes. I drifted a little but forgive me. Why are you late? You are late because you are not fit for your job if you cannot plan effectively to get to your destination without disrupting my simple life by running me off the road. Or maybe you aren’t late after all.

You do this just because you can. Well, that’s not the type of leadership my single vote was hoping for.

So back to history. In our Eurocentric education, 1066 was a pivotal year. This is when William the Conqueror subdued the foggy wild lands that eventually morphed into Gt. Britain, which then colonized us by treachery and force. Colonialism was not as benevolent or romantic an experience as many illinformed Ghanaians have neurotically compromised with in their psyches.

I mention William the Conqueror because he was not alone in what he sought to achieve with his invasion of Anglia.

He is however credited with it and many who helped him, are consigned to the sad amnesia of history. A few centuries closer, is the undeclared neocolonial American Empire.

Here too, George Washington is singularly credited with the founding of this republic. He was not alone in his vision and mission but many who were with him are now not as well remembered. Years later, those who for capital and slavery in the Southern states of the USA, fought to maintain a twisted tradition or heritage, are now having their memorial monuments removed. Schools, parks and community centers are being re-named. Monuments to Gen. Francis Lee, Gen. “Stonewall” Jackson and others are disappearing, for what they represent is inconsistent with current American values.

So, for those who wish to deny the credit of the founding of our Republic to Kwame Nkrumah, I say it’s a waste of time, because eventually the people assess their history correctly, no matter how painful or glorious it may be. They own the story and will write and tell it themselves.

The paradox is that he inspired and founded a free continent and the evidence is in every African republic today from Kwame Nkrumah Hall at the University of Dar es Salaam to Kwame Nkrumah Avenue in Ouagadougou. So if all of Africa’s freedom is credited to him, in living terms, then what’s the point of this discussion in Ghana about Founder’s Day or Founders’ Day? It will not stand the test of time. The Speaker of parliament should commit himself to engaging fully in the fight against illiteracy, poverty and disease, driven by a blatantly corrupt and heartless political class and one day, he may be well remembered.

From the forgoing, it is obvious that even allies of truly historical figures are sometimes forgotten.

For those who at a critical point in our history, actively fought to delay the delivery of liberty, to want to share in the glory by diluting Nkrumah’s iconic achievement, is not only dishonest but disgraceful.

I hope the president will work on his own legacy rather than trying to do the impossible because truly, Nkrumah with all his faults was not violent,

ethnocentric or narrowminded. He sought to build an egalitarian society against the elitism he found in his country, which many now perpetuate through the theft of state assets, in the name of democratic governance. Indeed, the true meaning of “Nkrumah never dies” is around us everywhere in Ghana and Africa but most importantly in our minds.

He never dies because his opponents have not halted their attempts to kill him which began in earnest on Thursday, November 10, 1955, when agents of the United Party/ National Liberation Movement (UP/NLM) remnants of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) exploded two bombs at the home he shared with his mother in Accra New Town. At that time he was meeting with his cabinet at home because he was too sick to go into work.

What dictatorial actions had he taken in 1955? They did not stop and continued to plot a coup in 1958 after which the Preventative Detention Act (PDA) was promulgated. The PDA is no different from the War Measures Act of Canada, activated against Quebec separatists or the Patriot Act of the USA, against present day terrorism. It was inspired by the PDA enacted in India in 1950.

Dear Maggie, This is a genuine concern, please, please do not brush it off and think that he needs “more time” I mean seriously what is he waiting for? Clearly, he is making up excuses... You guys have been together for 3 years - and as you put it enjoy doing a lot of things together and seem to have common interests.

You say: his last relationship ended because they didn’t have anything in common and they both got bored....Perhaps, it was he who got bored. In all probability, his ex must have asked him for marriage as well and he backed out saying he was “bored”. Really now. Maggie, this relationship has lasted so long because it worked for you. He wanted a set up where you guys would stay together, share a life (without responsibility) and have fun doing what you did.

Now, that you want commitment and a marriage from him, this whole set up is suddenly not working for him. I wonder is 3 years not enough for 2 people to discover common interests - for this, you have your whole life ahead! It’s hard to have a talk about “us” when there is no “us”. It looks like you’re expecting things to change, but he doesn’t want them to change....he’s happy with this setup and you need to know if. See, if a man wants to marry you, he will marry you. He will not make excuses. Have a word with him on this. Ask directly, if marriage is ever going to be on the cards, if not, then leave. My advice to you is NEVER move in with a man until you are married to him.

Frankly Speaking Founders’ Day Debate in Ghana: Setting the Historical Records Straight Kwame Nkrumah did NOT “found” Ghana Alone By: Dr. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB

Over the past two months, a fierce debate has been raging in Ghana over who is the “Founder” of the modern state of Ghana.

The debate actually started on January 7, 2017 during the inauguration of the current President, Nana Addo DankwaAkufo Addo. In his inaugural speech, Nana Akufo Addo mentioned that it is time to acknowledge the contributions of ALL the gallant citizens of Ghana whose sacrifices have brought our modern state into being. Opponents of this historical reality jumped to tear the President apart accusing him of only wanting to honour his father, Mr. Akufo Addo (one time President of Ghana from 1969 to 1972) and his uncle, Joseph BoakyeDanquah of Kyebi in the Eastern Region.

Nothing could be so far from the truth, the real truth, about the founding of the modern state of Ghana.

The newly-inaugurated President, Nana Akufo Addo was only asking the nation and its citizens to recognize the historical truth and reality about Ghana. In fulfilment of this quest to set the historical records straight, the ruling New Patriotic Party, the great grand-

child of the United Gold Coast Convention Political Party that set the ball rolling towards Ghana’s independence, decided to commemorate the formation of that political movement in Ghana.

It organized series of Lectures under the theme: “August 4 -Ghana’s Day of Destiny” to commemorate the launch of the independence struggle in Ghana at Saltpond, the coastal town in the Central Region where the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) was launched on August 4 th, 1947. These lectures were delivered by the current Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, a History Professor, Mike Ocquaye who emphasized the importance of acknowledging the contributions of the all

Since its inception in 2008, Mercy Firang Foundation is awarded annually to a qualified applicant who is a staunch member of Ghana Methodist Church of Toronto and at the same time pursuing a university degree program in Canada. It is intended to recognize academic excellence to support deserving students who demonstrate an enthusiasm to succeed academically to become a contributing member of the Christian community.

The application process i s o p e n a n n u a l ly t o students who meet the criteria established by the scholarship donors (The Firang family in Canada). The scholarship has its own specific set of

eligibility requirements, and is reviewed by a separate Selection Committee, appointed by Ghana Methodist Church of Toronto.

Frederick Gyamfi who is currently pursuing a degree program at Sheridan University College in Brampton, Ontario. Professor Joseph Mensah of (a family friend of the Firangs) and Stephen Firang ( a grandchild of Mercy and Seth Firang of blessed memory) urged the award recipient to study hard in order to bring honour to the family. Mr. Gyamfi expressed his sincere gratitude to the Firang family and promised to study hard.

Members of the Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), did not take kindly to these lectures and condemned the Speaker for being partisan. I must stress that there was, and still is, nothing partisan about setting the records straight about the glaring truth of a nation’s history.

Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr., a Jamaican political leader, publisher, journalist, entrepreneur and orator, who was also a staunch proponent of the Black Nationalism and PanAfricanism movements, once said that “a people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture are like a tree without roots.”

It is in the context of this famous statement that I write this piece today to join the debate to set the historical records straight about Ghana’s march towards nationhood and the unnecessary and twisted debate about the “Founder(s)” of Ghana.

As a Political Science and History Scholar, I can say without any reservation that the “founding” of Ghana did NOT start with Kwame Nkrumah’s appearance on the Gold Coast Political scene in 1947, just ten years before the attainment of independence.

Historical Timeline

The “Big Six” of Ghana The Gold Coast officially became a British colony since 1901 after the British defeated the Asantes in the war led by the Queenmother of Ejisu, the famous YaaAsantewaa in 1900.

This was when the Britain formally extended their control of the Gold Coast colony from the Coastal areas (Cape Coast, Elmina, Komenda, Saltpond etc to cover what is now Ashanti and BrongAhafo Regions and later the N o r t h e r n Te r r i t o r i e s .

After World War I, part of the German colony of Togoland was mandated to the British, who linked it administratively with the Gold Coast colony.

Although the ARPS was an alliance between the African intelligentsia and the chiefs or the indigenous rulers, its leadership was mostly made up of educated Africans who were able to use their literacy to negotiate with the colonial government. The British colonial rulers sought to undermine the ARPS

Toronto District School Board trustee for Ward 1, Avtar Minhas another special guest, spoke very well about Bishop Bob Tacky and Impact Lives Church and the impact they have had on people.

Lady Phidelia Tacky testified to God’s faithfulness during this 25year journey and sang one of her favorite songs – He’ll Do It Again – receiving a thunderous applause. Guests were privileged to watch a timeline video presentation of Impact Lives Church from its formation to the great ministry it is today. Testimonial videos by church members were shown as they spoke about the impact Bishop Bob & Lady Tacky and the ministry has had in transforming their lives. The leadership of the church then presented Bishop Bob and Lady Phidelia Tacky, a special plaque as their appreciation for their stewardship and mentoring. It was then followed by a presentation of plaques by Bishop Bob & Lady Tacky to members who have excelled in various ministries towards the growth of

the church during the past twenty-five years. The anniversary cake was cut by Bishop Bob & Lady Phidelia Tacky.

Now, The Mandatory Towing Fee And SSNIT’s Debacles Rage On!

Ghanaians don’t like authentic things that is why we’re broke and panhandling for everything.

Before I dive into it, let’s uncork the champagne and inflate the balloons. It’s time to celebrate the good news.

Hooray! I’m glad that the government listened to our cry and voices of reason and suspended the DVLA mandatory towing fee for now—at least, now we do know that the flag -staff House listens to the voices from the wilderness. That doesn’t happen that often in Ghana.

Now let’s try to get some dividend from the mandatory towing services mumbo- jumbo: Job creation—the towing services should not be limited to Road Safety management services only. The government should encourage individual people who can afford workable towing trucks (with liability insurance coverage and tools) to participate in the business.

By so doing competition will sink in and the fees could go down drastically for the vehicles’ owners.

In such market place, competition will drive supply and demand; therefore there is no need for the government to set the price ceiling for the operators.

Kwaku Adu-Gyamfi On top of it, private garages (where the towed vehicles will be stored for safety or repairs purposes), and mechanic and auto body shops will spring up along our road network. It can create a huge employment avenue if only a level playing field is created.

Now, I can hear all the naysayers. People who don’t face transportation or vehicle ownership challenges are really not interested in solving the problems of those who do. But this is something that is doable, and one day we’ll wonder why we didn’t do it sooner. It’s a matter of life and death.

Don’t we need a break from wearing kuntunkuni on every Saturday to mourn our dead from motor accidents that could have been avoided?

Anyway, where does our police personnel fit into the equation? It has been left out

of the debate and I wonder how this new industry can survive without the police. Any law that can’t be enforced is not a law.

However, can our integrityimpaired, corruption and bribe infected and unregulated police force handle the fallouts and intricacies of this new industry?

I hope they don’t turn it into money- minting machinery cottage industry.

For one thing, a lot of money will exchange hands and that can easily derail the purpose and goal of the towing services.

I’m afraid to say, this will end up in the dustbin of history just as every laudable idea in Ghana. We hardly get things right on this side of the planet for some reason. I wonder why!

This brings us to the SSNIT‘s debate. Is it me or something is wrong with the entire nation?

Why are we so fake? The entire nation is fake and fraud to the point that ninety-five percent of us are integrity and credibility challenged. We’ve been socially handicapped for a long time.

Let me see if I can digest it delicately and break it down diplomatically. Allegedly, the boss of SSNIT is working with fake academic credentials for years and the news media is running with it—right? Now

supposed it’s true that the man never had any degree from any college. Why do we keep on referring to him as a “Doctor”, if indeed he’s fake and fraud?

Why can’t we call him just Mr.Calet Afaglo? What’s wrong with us? What are we afraid of? Or is it because we are also cheesy on integrity and have low expectations for ourselves and others? I’d like to know!

By the way, where was the head of the human resources department of that outfit who hired that fake ‘doctor’? How come no one is talking about that one or calling that person to EOCO’s office for questioning?

Now, it seems SSNIT’s integrity and credibility are in flame. The poor retirees have to pick up the pieces and whimper. And I can bet with my last cedi that this case will die prematurely with no scratch on any one but the senior citizens. Is it fair?

Speaking of SSNIT, when it comes to the nation’s most important social programs for senior citizens and retirees, social SSNIT is (was) arguably at the top of the list. It supposed to guarantee a monthly income it provides to the eligible retirees. It was mandated to provide critical financial help by helping millions of retired

workers and perhaps even their families to meet their financial obligations.

The problem is: if it’s spending a whopping $72 million dollars here and there as if there is no tomorrow I wonder how it can meet its obligations when the new retirees come on board.

For one thing, any outfit that is sloppy over-staff, with lazy sales people and abysmal customer -service can easily go on buying sprees; buying whatever is in the wagon that is on sale because it’s out of control with no supervision.

As to the fake degrees, he isn’t the only one. Take the survey of the herbal medicine vendors. Every one of them has a doctorate degree in medicine.

It goes like this: Dr. Obi Nnim –a- Obi -kyere, Dr.Wonder,Dr. One- Touch, etc. And,they’re laughing all the way to the bank and we seem to have no problem with that while they’re killing us softly .So why are we stopping there? We sell fake friendships and eat fake fish and rice because we don’t like authentic stuff so let’s deal with it and shut up!

The historical contributions of the “Big Six” in Ghanaian historical and olitical life is not a hoax or joke. These men: Ebenezer Ako-Adjei, Edward Akufo-Addo.

J. B. Danquah. Kwame Nkrumah. Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey, and William Ofori Atta are the giants in our history. We have read how all these noble men contributed to building the foundations of an independent country, free from the clutches of British colonial rule. It is a fact that the UGCC was formed and they invited Nkrumah to help. He played his great part as well. The achievement of independence and the creation of modern Ghana have been processes started by some, continued by others and still counting.

As Myles Munroe has expressed succinctly, “no achievement in life is without the help of many known and unknown individuals who have impacted our lives.”

Thus in a situation where those who employed Dr. Nkrumah to provide leadership, direction and focus to the objectives of the UGCC are known and can be identified, it does not make sense to ignore them, sideline them, or deprive them of the pride of place for their contributions towards the founding of our nation.

The President has therefore decided that he will seek Parliamentary approval to declare August 4 th as “Founders’ Day” to honourALL the heroes in our nation’s building and September 21st as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day to honour the spectacular contributions of Kwame Nkrumah. These are noble moves which should be supported by all who do not want to twist history to glorify a single person and sidelining or ignoring the contributions of many.

It is said that “Rome was not built in a day”.

The same goes for our independence struggle and nation-building. Ghana was NOT founded or built in a day!!!

Do You Make this Parenting Mistake?

“Wait till Your Father Gets Home!” Not an effective way to parent a child

Many parents feel that if their children have food to eat, a safe place to sleep, and clothing to wear, then they are parenting well. However, this is only meeting the basic needs of children.

Parenting is a much more in-depth and committed relationship. The danger of ineffective parenting is that children are left at the mercy of life, predators, and childhood inexperience.

Effective parenting: This is defined as the ability to interact and engage with children in such a way that they learn and grow into remarkable adults. It takes daily effort to connect with children on a meaningful and personal level.

Effective parenting techniques focus on holding your child accountable for bad behavior and on developing better problem solving skills.

Sometimes when we feel powerless as parents, we resort to bringing out the big guns. Have you ever found yourself saying things like, “Wait until your father gets home!” or “Wait until your mother hears about this!”? I’m here to tell you that if you threaten a child with what their other parent might do, you are making two serious mistakes.

The first is that you are giving up all your power and transferring it to the other parent. When you say, “You just wait till mom or dad hears this,” what you’re really saying is, “I don’t have any power over you, but the person who does have power over both of us is coming home.” Another message you are communicating is, “I’m powerless just like you,” or even “You’re more powerful than me.” These are very ineffective messages to give children because they are not statements that hold them accountable or define the parent/ child relationship in healthy terms.

The second mistake that happens here is that the parent who says, “Wait until your father/mother hears this.” is setting the other parent up to be the bad guy,

and that’s unfair. When mom comes home, her first job shouldn’t be all the unfinished business that dad has left.

Believe me, that’s no way to start out your night when you’re dealing with children. If a parent needs to rely on their partner for something important, the way to say it is, “I think I have to talk to your father about this before I make any decisions. Please go do your homework or read in your room.” Be sure to emphasize “I.” And of course, that statement should be saved for things that are important, not minor behavior or back talking. A good example would be if your child steals from you or lies to his teacher. When faced with an important issue such as stealing, it doesn’t harm the situation at all for the parent to wait for their partner to come home. Remember, when dealing with any serious decisions where a response is necessary, waiting a little while or talking with another parent or adult never hurts and is always the preferred approach when dealing with emotionally charged situations. So instead of threatening your child with their other parent, present a unified front and emphasize the fact that you and your partner are making the decisions together.

So how do you know if you should change your parenting style? I believe that you have to change the way you parent if what you have been doing up until now has proven ineffective.

There’s information regarding learning effective parenting styles, giving effective consequences, and ways to have conversations with your child that promote change and don’t create excuses. Heart disease in women : Is it diferent from men?

When it comes to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease, men have traditionally garnered more attention than women have. You might think this is because men are more susceptible to heart disease than are women. But in reality, more women than men die of cardiovascular disease each year. Women are six times as likely to die of heart disease as of breast cancer. Heart disease kills more women over 65 than all cancers combined.

Historically, heart disease has been considered primarily a man’s disease. But recent statistics have shown that the rate of heart disease has declined in men but not as much in women. This may be due to a combination of biological and social differences.

How do heart attack symptoms differ in women and men?

The most common symptom of a heart attack in both men and women is some type of pain, pressure or discomfort in the chest. But it’s not always severe or even the most prominent symptom, particularly in women.

Women are more likely to have signs and symptoms unrelated to chest pain, such as: § Neck, shoulder, upper back or abdominal discomfort § Shortness of breath § Nausea or vomiting § Sweating § Lightheadedness or dizziness

What can women do to reduce their risks of heart disease?

As for the basics: Be active, maintain a normal weight and don’t smoke. Women also need to take their prescribed medications appropriately, such as beta blockers, blood thinners and aspirin, and they need to better manage other conditions that are risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.

Some women at high risk may also benefit from the use of supplements, such as omega-3 fatty acids and folic acid.

These are all things you can talk to your doctor about.

Regular exercise and healthy eating are the mainstays of heart disease prevention.

How much weight should I try and lose?

There is no “normal” weight, but a normal body mass index (BMI) is helpful.

This calculation helps you determine if you have a healthy or unhealthy percentage of body fat. BMI numbers of 25 or higher are associated with an increased risk of heart disease.

Remember, though, even losing 10 to 15 pounds can help by lowering your blood pressure and helping prevent diabetes — both of which increase your risk of heart disease.

Exercise isn’t the same as being busy. I have women tell me how busy they are, that they’re always running around doing stuff, and they may be tired at the end of the day, but they aren’t physically fit. Being active means doing something physical, getting exercise.

Good exercise includes taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking, riding bikes with your kids. Using a pedometer (step counter) to track your steps is a good idea. The goal is to log 10,000 steps a day, which is about five miles. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t jog or join an exercise club, even a 30-minute walk every day results in big benefits for your

heart.

Is the treatment for heart disease different for women?

In some women, artery blockages (also called a plaques) are evenly spread along artery walls, which is not treatable using traditional methods such as angioplasty and stenting designed to flatten the bulky, irregular, not-so-subtle plaques in men’s arteries. In women with these more diffuse plaques, drug treatment — rather than angioplasty or stenting — may be a better option.

We also know that men and women respond differently to certain heart medications, such as clot-busting drugs . There is also a difference between men and women in the effects of aspirin therapy.

In women, aspirin therapy seems to reduce the risk of stroke more than in men, while in men it reduces the risk of heart attack more than it reduces strokes.

What these differences suggest is that if we use the same treatment in women that we use in men without understanding those differences, we may actually increase women’s risks of complications.

What’s next in the effort to prevent heart disease in women?

Recent studies, especially those giving results for men and women, have helped us begin to identify gaps in our knowledge and will spur researchers to look for answers that will improve care for women. Doctors are becoming more aware of the different signs to watch for that may indicate a woman is having a heart attack — different than what men may experience.

Women and physicians also need to become better educated about heart disease in women. Knowledge helps women feel empowered to ask questions and learn more about how to prevent heart disease.

And as women become more informed about their risks, they’ll be better able to follow through with healthier lifestyle habits.

HALIFAX -- A new survey suggests a large majority of Canadians support the legalization of recreational marijuana use, with many expressing a cautious willingness to try eating pot-infused munchies.

The poll by researchers at Dalhousie University in Halifax found that about 68 per cent of people across the country favour the impending legalization of pot, with the bulk of that support in B.C. and Ontario.

The aim of the survey, done over four weeks in August, was to gauge Canadians’ perception of recreational marijuana as a food ingredient when it is legalized next July, if they would use it in their diet and, if so, how they would prepare it.

they would buy food containing marijuana, with 46 per cent saying they would purchase potlaced baked goods like brownies and muffins if they were legal.

Despite their apparent willingness, the bulk of survey participants indicated they didn’t know how to cook with marijuana at home and most said they did not consider it a healthy ingredient.

More than half of those surveyed -- 58.5 per cent -- said they had concerns about children and youth having greater access to recreational marijuana when it is legal.

The project surveyed 1,087 people and had a margin of error of 3.1 per cent, 19 times out of 20.

Government to spend $5.5M advertising hydro bill cuts, documents show

By Allison Jones, Toronto Liberal government has earmarked $5.5 million to advertise cuts to hydro bills - ads the opposition says use public money to make the Liberal party look good.

In response to a freedom of information request by the New Democrats, government documents cite “negative media coverage” of rising electricity costs as a key piece of context for why the advertising campaign is needed.

“Despite recent cost reduction actions the government has implemented, the overriding messaging from media has been unreasonably high costs associated with electricity,” says the project brief, dated Feb. 2 - after bills were reduced by eight per cent, but before the government announced a further 17 per cent cut. “ T h e value of what people are getting for their money has been overshadowed.”

About $2.5 million is allocated for the fiscal 2016-17 year and a further $3 million is set aside for the following year, the

documents show. About $1.2 million had been spent as of March 31.

A set of radio ads this year have told listeners that people would receive an average of 25 per cent off their hydro bills this summer and rate increases are being held to inflation for four years.

Auditor general Bonnie Lysyk has said the ads likely wouldn’t have been approved under previous government advertising rules because the intent is to convey a positive impression of government.

Lysyk has complained that changes the Liberals enacted to government advertising legislation in 2015 reduced her office to a rubber stamp.

The old rules banned ads as partisan if the intent was to foster a positive impression of government or a negative impression of its critics, but the new rules say an ad is partisan only if it uses an elected member’s picture, name or voice, the colour or logo associated with the political party, or directly criticizes a

party or member of the legislature.

Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault said the ads are necessary to inform people about bill reductions so they can adjust their household budgets.

“Still people don’t know about the 25 per cent reduction,” he said.

“They were having a hard time, as they said before, choosing between heating and eating and so now as we’re moving forward into those winter months they can plan for this.”

But NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says people can tell their bills have gone down simply by looking at them.

“The $5.5 million should be invested in helping people get their hydro bills down, not in partisan government advertising that wouldn’t pass the smell test if the government hadn’t changed the laws,” Horwath said.

“You’re supposed to use government advertising for a broader good,” he said. “What we don’t need is partisan vanity ads using taxpayer monies to advance the interests of the Liberal party.”

Part of the Liberals’ hydro plan is increasing the benefits available under the Ontario Electricity Support Program for lowincome ratepayers, which Thibeault cited as another reason the advertising is important, because the program requires people to sign up.

But despite the advertising so far, not

as many eligible people have signed up as the government was hoping.

Thibeault estimated that 500,000 people would be eligible, but his office said that 232,115 customers are benefitting. “ We ’ r e s e e i n g t h e numbers increase month to month and that’s something, I think, for us to be pleased about, but I’d still like to see more people sign up for it,” he said.

Canada Revenue Agency requirements mean that people need to enrol

in the program with a physical signature on paper, instead of just via the internet, but Thibeault said the government is working with the CRA “to find ways to help with that.” As well, the government is working to automatically qualify people on welfare or disability, he said.

The low-income benefits were increased as part of the hydro plan, so that someone who qualifies for the smallest credit - a single person earning less than $28,000 - would save $45 a month instead of $30.

The Congregation of Evangel Assembly of God Church concluded their annual Woman’s Week in what was truly a celebration of strong Christian women. Delivering the Celebrations’ message, Rev. Dr. Ama Owusu spoke passionately and directly to the older woman of Evangel about respecting themselves and being examples to the younger generation. According to Rev. Dr. Owusu this means women in the church should encourage their daughters to dress appropriately in and out of church and should strive to get their families at church on

time every week.

The congregation also took time to wholeheartedly honor the women leaders of Evangel, namely: President Juliet Anna Frimpong, Vice President Sister Vida, Treasurer, Beatrice Amartey, Advisor Mrs. Offei and Chairladies; Divina Ampoto and Nina Boateng.

Zina Isaach crowned Miss Ghanaian-Canadian Beauty Queen 2017

Mississauga Living Arts Centre, 4141 Living Arts Drive, Mississauga was the venue of the 2 nd edition of the Miss Ghanaian-Canadian Beauty Pageant 2017. The original venue, York University was switched with only a week to go but the organizers managed to pull the pageant through.

Seven beautiful young and smart ladies vied to be crowned the 2017 queen after going through countless hours of rehearsals. The contestants were Zina Isaach, Lily Amoah, Andrea Gyampem, Belinda Boakyewaa, JedidiaAcheampong, Whitney Ware and Roberta Quarshie

The beautiful energetic ladies competed in swim wear, evening wear, and traditional wear and showcased their talents and other competitions. All the contestants entertained the crowd with pulsating moves as they gyrated their bodies to various danceable tunes. The crowd was very happy with their presentations.

The event was hosted byKwasi Beast from USA and Lucas Walker from UK The 2016 beauty queen Zipporah Prempeh was on hand to crown Zina Isaach as the new beauty queen. What a coincidence as both beauty queens’ first names begins with “Z”. The Ghanaian News congratulatesall the contestants for their hard work and passion.

Ghana wins three-year maritime boundary dispute case against Ivory Coast The International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) on Saturday unanimously ruled that Ghana did not violate the rights of the Ivory Coast in oil exploration within and beyond 200 nm (nautical miles).

The court redefined the boundary in its ruling which said the single maritime boundary beyond 200 nm should start at BP 55+ “with the coordinates 05° 05’ 23.2” N, 03° 06” 21.2” W in WGS 84 as a geodetic datum”.

The Hamburg-based court also ruled that Ghana is not entitled to pay any reparation to Ivory Coast for the exploration of oil within the disputed boundaries in the Atlantic Ocean.

“The boundary continues as a geodetic line starting at an azimuth of 191° 38” 06.7” until it reaches the outer limits of the continental shelf,” it added.

The dispute started since Ghana’s discovery of oil in 2007 which Ivory Coast laid claims to. Series of failed negotiations led Ghana to file a case at the ITLOS in 2014 to rule on the delimitation of the maritime boundary between the two countries.

A special chamber was formed in 2015 presided over by ITLOS Vice-President Boualem Bouguetaia and included another member of the Tribunal with two ad hoc judges to deal with the dispute.

This reduces just a little of Ghana’s boundary claim of geographic coordinates 05° 05’ 28.4” N and 03° 06” 21.8” W. It also goes against the Ivory Coast’s claim that the single maritime boundary follows the 168.7o azimuth line.

Cote D’lvoire, Ghana accept ITLOS judgement on maritime dispute Agents who represented Ghana and Cote D’lvoire in the maritime boundary dispute case, Gloria Akuffo and Adama Toungara, say they accept the Special Chamber of the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea’s (ITLOS) judgement on the case.

This was contained in a joint statement released hours after t h e C h a m b e r ’s j u d g e m e n t .

The long standing maritime dispute between Ghana and Cote D’lvoire came to what appears to be a closure today [Saturday], September 23, 2017, after ITLOS ruled largely in favour of Ghana.

The Chamber ruled that there has not been any violation on the part of Ghana on Côte d’Ivoire’s maritime boundary.

It further rejected Côte D’Ivoire’s argument that Ghana’s coastal lines were unstable, adding that Ghana had not violated Côte d’Ivoire’s sovereign rights with its oil exploration in the disputed basin in question.

Bringing the Gospel to our Community by Rev. Isaac DeGraft Takyi “The Christian, from Monday to Saturday”: Part one C h r i s t i a n s Tr y i n g t o Survive in the Marketplace “Business exists in society in order to provide a platform where people can express aspects of their God-given identity through meaningful and creative work and to provide goods and services to a community to enable it to flourish”. Jeff Van Duzer Ed Silvoso reveals that there are four Ascending Levels of Involvement in the Marketplace that Christians go through if they want to create transformation in the nations: In other words, there are four kinds of Christians from Monday to Saturday: which kind of a Christian are you from Monday to Saturday?

Are you the Christian who is just trying to survive in the marketplace?

Let me ask you a question. I want you to think for a moment about the most significant Christians who have impacted the world for Christ in the last 100 years. Name four or five off the top of your head and write them down if you may.

My guess will be that you will have names like Billy Graham, Bill Bright etc. Who are the Christians you know who have impacted the business, the political, government, and education? My point is, where

are the men and women of faith impacting the world from the workplace? Why aren’t we seeing them in the list?

Absent are men like Jeremiah Lanphier (NY City revivals of 1857), RG LeTourneau (construction businessman who impacted many for Christ), Wilbur Wilberforce (England’s statesman who demolished slavery) or Arthur Guinness, an entrepreneur who changed the society in Ireland and England at the turn of the century.

The first of four categories of Christians from Monday to Saturdayis best described as a person whohas no purpose or zeal for their work or life. They have not seen the power or presence of God in their work life.

Solomon describes this person: So my heart began to despair

over all my toilsome labor under the sun. For a man may do his work with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then he must leave all he owns to someone who has not worked for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune. What does a man get for all the toil and anxious striving with which he labors under the sun? All his days his work is pain and grief; even at night his mind does not rest. This too is meaningless.

(Eccl 2:20-23).

This person most likely has a segmented life. Their faith is segmented from their work life. They lack purpose and meaning and have little direction. They go to work to collect a paycheck and most likely their work is reduced to collecting a paycheck at the end of the week, two weeks or at the end of the month. They have never heard the voice of God in their life and would never consider praying during or for a workplace related issue.

They go to church, but they see church as another place to do something for God. They do not see their workplace as their mission field, as their parish and as their pulpit. There are people in your workplace who might never come across any born-again Christian beside you. God has placed you at

your workplace so He can use you to change the destiny of some of the people who cross your path. Do not fail. In the final analysis, this person is a defeated Christian simply trying to survive.

The world is full of surviving Christians. They believe the marketplace is evil, their goal is to survive the marketplace unharmed, their strategy is to avoid contact with non-believers to escape possible corruption, some survivors ignore the marketplace completely and their impact is non-existence, according to the producers of the Greater Seas blog. They are waiting for the lifeboat of salvation to take them off this “evil planet”. In fact, George Barna says that in America we have 35 -40% of the population who claim to be born again.

However, if you had forty percent of market share of your industry, how much influence would you have over that industry? Coca-Cola has a 40% market share in the soft drink industry. Do you think they carry a lot of clout? You bet they do!Can we say the same of the body of Christ today in North America?

In a survey done by the Gallup organization in

1983, they measured the work habits of church going people compared to non-church going people. What they found was no significant difference between the morality and ethics of non-believers and Christians.

Christians were as likely to steal company supplies, cheat on taxes and call in sick (when not sick) as the non-Christian.

U n f o r t u n a t e l y, Category 1 is a large segment of the Christian population.If you find yourself in this category please repent and see yourself as called to make a difference wherever you walk, wait and work.

Invictus Games 2017 opens in Toronto

Local Black Stars Cape Coast sports Stadium was the venue of where Ghana thrashed their arch rival Nigeria 4-1 in the finals of the WAFU 2017 competition. Ghana won the cup in 2013. It was a sweet revenge for the Black Stars “B” team after losing to Nigeria earlier in the tournament.

A lot pressure was put on Coach Maxwell Konadu to recalibrate their strategies and they rose to the occasion to make Ghanaians happy after failing to qualify for CHAN. Is this an omen that Ghana’s soccer is on the ascendancy?

Or Is this just a blimp or luck on our side?

The only defeat Ghana suffered in the competition this year was at the hands of Nigeria losing to them 2-0 but bouncing back to thump them 4-1. Maybe the loss to Nigeria was a wakeup call as they marshaled their efforts to win the semis and the finals. Actually in their quest to annex the crown, they started slowly by defeating Gambia which was not convincing but went on to beat Mali, Guinea and Niger.

In the finals, Stephen Sarfo had a brace with Vincent Atinga and Winful Cobbina scoring a goal each. The consolation goal for Nigeria was by Rabiu Ali who slotted in with a 22-yard freekick as Ghana was leading a comfortable 4-0. Nigeria’s goal came in the dying minutes of the game.

The man of match was Stephen Sarfo who had a brace. He plays for Berekum Chelsea and donned the #15 jersey.

The win has blunted the dissatisfaction of Ghanaians for the failure of the Black Stars “B” to qualify for CHAN. Vincent Atinga wearing the #5 jersey a goal scorer was sent off in the 90th minute after being shown a second yellow card which could have hampered Ghana’s win had he been sent off earlier. So Ghana was handicapped for just some few minutes.

Lighting of Games Flame The 2017 Invictus Games was opened amid much fanfare at the Air Canada Centre Toronto on the night of Saturday September 23rd 2017. Allied soldiers and veterans from 17 nations across the globe are taking part in the Invictus 2017 Games. Invictus Games was founded by Prince Harry of Britain in 2014 as a way to help wounded veterans with their recovery and are the only international sporting event for ill, wounded and injured active duty and veteran service members.

A total of 550 competitors from 17 countries are competing in 12 adoptive sports spread across 9 venues in Toronto over 8 days of competition as well as over 1100 of their family members and friends supporting them. The first Invictus Games was held in London UK in 2014, the 2nd in Orlando Florida USA in 2016 with Toronto hosting the 3rd.

After the parade of the 17 nations, with Canada the host nation entering last amid thunderous applause and cheering the Canadian National Anthem was rendered followed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s welcome speech. The Prime Minister PM Trudeau called them all an inspiration to others as he spoke of their sacrifices and dedication to helping others.

“No matter what challenges life has set before them, they continue to do what they do best: serve their countries, with passion and integrity,” Trudeau

said amid cheers. “You’re not only here to inspire, you’re also here to win.”Trudeau continued, “We know that no one leaves a battlefield unchanged, and that not all scars can be seen. Asking for help when you have physical and mental injuries, that’s hard for everyone. But it’s especially tough for people like you who have dedicated your lives to helping others”, he said.

Mike Myers,InvictusGames Ambassador, on his part explained that his British parents who served in World War II inspired him to become involved with the 2017 Games.

The CEO of the 2017 Invictus Games Organizing Committee Michael Burns brought greetings to the participants and their families as well as the huge crowd at the ACC. He said, “the legacy of the two previous Invictus Games is being built and it will impact the lives of thousands of our soldiers, veterans and their families for years to come”.

His speech was followed by the raising of the Invictus Games Flag.

Captain (Ret’d) Trevor Greene who 9 years ago took an axe to the head in Afghanistan took to the stage amid thunderous applause as he recounted his story of rehabilitation when the incident occurred. He was introduced by Rick Hansen, Canada’s Man in Motion. He was later joined by his family and Prince Harry the founder of the Invictus Games.“In a world where so many have

reasons to feel cynical and apathetic, I wanted to find a way for veterans to be a beacon of light and show that us all that we have a role to play — that we all win when we respect our friends, neighbours and communities,” he said.”That’s why we created Invictus — not only to help veterans recover from their physical and mental wounds, but also to inspire people to follow their example of resilience, optimism and service in their own lives.”

The Governor-General of Canada, His Excellency The Rt. Hon. David Johnston accompanied by his wife Mrs. Sharon Johnston then declared the games opened in a short speech after which the games flame was lit as the crowd cheered in admiration.

Among the star performers were the Tenors, who performed the national anthem, Quebec Folk Group, La BottineSouriante, Alessia Cara of Brampton, Sarah McLachlan and Luca ‘Lazylegs’ Patuelli. In a VIP box at the opening ceremony were PM Justin Trudeau and wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, Prince Harry and America First lady Melania Trump, Govenor General His Excellency Rt. Hon David Johnston and wife Sharon Johnston, Premier Kathleen Wynne and Toronto Mayor John Tory and others.

The mascot for the 2017 Games is Vimy a young Labrador retriever.

The next Invictus Games will be held in Sydney Australia from October 20 -27, 2018.
