The Canada branch of the New Patriotic marked 25th years of existence on 28 September 2019 in Toronto and the event was attended by President of the Republic of Ghana HE Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The silver jubilee which took place at the Marriott Hotel was under the theme: ‘Ghana beyond aid and the role of the diaspora’ Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Charles Owiredu, Executive Secretary to the president Nana Asante Bediatuo and Mr Yoofi Grant, the Chief Executive of the Ghana Investment Promotion Council accompanied his Excellency. President Akufo-Addo assured the gathering he was doing more than his predecessor to fight corruption in the country. He said: “Despite the crudely-orchestrated effort to brand my government as corrupt.
‘’With every allegation levelled against my appointees investigated or being investigated by the authorized institutions of our state, and not by him, he noted that 21 officials of the past administration are on trial for various alleged offences of corruption or willfully causing financial loss to the state. “I will not sacrifice due process in order to play to the gallery… It, therefore, does not come as a surprise that, in the Global Corruption Barometer, conducted by Transp arency International and Afrobarometer, 60% of Ghanaians, in 2019, believe Government is doing a good job at fighting corruption, as opposed to 25% in 2015.’’ President Akufo-Addo spoke about the strides being made by his government in bettering the economy and the projection by the IMF that the Ghanaian economy is the fastest-growing economy in the entire world, with a projected GDP growth rate of 8.8%, cont’d on pg. 52
