The Canada branch of the New Patriotic marked 25th years of existence on 28 September 2019 in Toronto and the event was attended by President of the Republic of Ghana HE Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The silver jubilee which took place at the Marriott Hotel was under the theme: ‘Ghana beyond aid and the role of the diaspora’ Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Charles Owiredu, Executive Secretary to the president Nana Asante Bediatuo and Mr Yoofi Grant, the Chief Executive of the Ghana Investment Promotion Council accompanied his Excellency.

President Akufo-Addo assured the gathering he was doing more than his predecessor to fight corruption in the country.

He said: “Despite the crudely-orchestrated effort to brand my government as corrupt.

‘’With every allegation levelled against my appointees investigated or being investigated by the authorized institutions of our state, and not by him, he noted that 21 officials of the past administration are on trial for various alleged offences of corruption or willfully causing financial loss to the state.

“I will not sacrifice due process in order to play to the gallery… It, therefore, does not come as a surprise that, in the Global Corruption Barometer, conducted by Transp arency International and Afrobarometer, 60% of Ghanaians, in 2019, believe Government is doing a good job at fighting corruption, as opposed to 25% in 2015.’’

President Akufo-Addo spoke about the strides being made by his government in bettering the economy and the projection by the IMF that the Ghanaian economy is the fastest-growing economy in the entire world, with a projected GDP growth rate of 8.8%, cont’d on pg. 52

‘Crucial Decision Time in Canada: Community Members must turn out to vote on October 21!

Canadians go to the polls on October 21, 2019 to choose a new Federal government to run the country from Ottawa. Elections have come and gone, but this upcoming one has a lot of implications for our community. Around the world, especially in the Western “democracies”, the past ten years have witnessed a dangerous shift towards extremist political parties whose ideologies are at variance with the interest of minority groups, especially immigrant groups, of which our community is a part.

Across Europe, political parties with antiimmigrant and anti-muslim agendas have gained prominence and taken significant seats in national elections. Down south in the United States, we have witnessed, over the past three years, the poisonous anti-immigrant agenda and policies of the government that won power in 2016. Many immigrants, including some from our communities in that country have been living in extreme fear. Some have been seized, detained and in some cases, deported back to their countries of origin. Many of these victims of the vitriolic policies and agenda of that government have lived in that country for decades and raised their families there. The actions of the government have separated and destroyed many families.

Here in Canada, some of the political parties contesting the upcoming elections have some agendas pointing in the same dangerous directions. Some are openly expressing these in their manifestoes and platform messages, while othersare concealed in some veiled threats and policies.

In the light of these published and known policies of these political parties and their leaders, we strongly appeal to our community members not to regard the upcoming elections as “just one of those elections”. There is a lot at stake for our community and its members, for better and for the worse. The success of some of the political parties may not change the fortunes of our community much, but we may continue to live in peace and relative harmony to carry on with our lives in this country.

However, the victory of some other parties do not bode well for our community. Some of the political parties will surely reverse and halt many of the gains that our communities have achieved over the years, which will reverse our fortunes in this country. In this connection, it is absolutely necessary for our community members to participate fully in the coming elections.

We urge our community members to carefully study the published manifestos and platforms of the various parties which are not difficult to understand. That way, we can make very informed choices on election day when we go to the polls. We need to go out there in our numbers on election day and vote. We could also participate in the elections in other positive and meaningful ways by volunteering our services to the political parties of our choice: act as polling agents/assistants; volunteer at party offices; go door knocking, distribute publicity materials; drive voters to polling stations, among others.

This particular election is too important to ignore. We should eschew and avoid the apathy of the past. We need to go out in our numbers and vote because our very survival in this country is at stake.

Ken Ntiamoa: Profiling Founder of NPP Canada Branch Ridwan Ibrahim Asante, Toronto

Ntiamoa was elected president of the first ever Ghana Union formed in Toronto in 1977.

The New Patriotic Party has established its roots in Canada and for many the credit goes to the founding founder Mr. Ken Ntiamoa. He took the initiative to bring all party followers together and under one umbrella more than two decades ago but Ken likes to deflect all the accolades.

In his words, he says: ‘Many of you refer to me as the founder of the Canada Chapter of NPP. While it is true that I am the first chairman, I am really not the founder.

Who is Ken Ntiamoa: Ken was born at Pakyi No2 in the Ashanti Region on August 6, 1948.

He attended Pakyi Presby Primary and Middle Schools between 1954 and 1962.

In September 1962, he gained admission to Prempeh College with a full scholarship from Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB Scholarship, which was restricted to only intelligent students).

He graduated in June 1967 among the best of the Class of ‘67, obtaining awards in Mathematics and Chemistry Ken had his sixth-form, between September 1967 and June 196 at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (then renamed University of Science and Technology after the Feb 1966 coup).

He came to Canada on 25 August, 1970 with a group four, on a Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) Scholarship to study Agricultural Engineering at University of Guelph.

After four years, he graduated with Distinction. He only missed out on the I Governor General’s medal because he was a foreign student.

In September 1974, he enrolled in an MBA program at York University and graduated in June 1976 with Finance Major to become one of the very few Ghanaian MBA graduates both home and abroad.

Between 1977 and 1988, he worked with multi-million dollar Canadian companies as Financial Analyst for Nabisco Brands and Manager of Financial Operations for Playtex.

In August 1988, he quit corporate life and started a mortgage brokerage company, being one of two blackowned such companies in Toronto.

He has 31 years of experience in the Mortgage Financing Industry where he has helped many people, including Ghanaians, finance their homes and businesses.

Ken is married to Mabelle. He has three children and five grandchildren.

‘The founder of this Chapter is actually, Mr. SK Boafo. He is the one who sowed the seed. I only watered the seedling. Sometime in 1991, Ghana had decided to become a multi-party democracy, thanks to people like Nana Akufo-Addo who piled up pressure on Rawlings’ PNDC Government.’

Mr. Ntiamoa reveals Mr. SK Boafo, who was domiciled in London as a lawyer and pastor, contacted him through a mutual friend, Abraham Obeng-Amoakohene to form a Danquah-Busia-Dombo Club here in Toronto.

He accepted the responsibility started the ground works for the establishment.

Way Forward: Ken Ntiamoa has urged members of the party in the diaspora to play a massive role in President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s transformation agenda for Ghana.

He believes party faithful in the diaspora have the human and financial resources to contribute to developmental projects. ’Basically it will take concentration.

People will have to willing to do something for the country,’’ Ntiamoa told the Ghanaian News during the 25th Anniversary celebration of NPP Canada Branch on Saturday, 28 September 2019. ‘’The President (Afufo-Addo) has a vision and the vision is Ghana beyond and that means taking the destiny of the country into the hands of Ghanaians ‘’There are plenty opportunities at home- One district one factory is one, mining, service industry, technology.

We are into of all these right here in Canada United States, Germany and everywhere. ‘’We also have the financial resources; we have contacts with people from other foreign countries. If you take the United States for example, we are trying to take African-Americans back to Ghana. We can team up and take on some projects.

‘We have to be willing to go back. We are also talking about Diasporan Bond where Ghanaians are going to raise funds to make some investments in the country so those are the areas which we can help. ‘’

Changes of OHIP-insured services takes effect 1st October 2019 Established by the Kaplan Board of Arbitration, the physician-led Appropriateness Working Group (AWG) reviewed several OHIP-insured services. The AWG used evidence, best practices and expert opinion to identify and update the delivery of certain services to help ensure the most effective care for Ontario patients.

Beginning October 1, 2019, the following OHIP-insured services will be updated as a result of the working group’s review.

IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF PATIENT CARE Use More Accurate Diagnostic Imaging for Sinus Problems

• •

This would make it easier for a patient to see a specialist for the same problem within a two-year period as an additional visit to their primary care provider would not be needed.

• Patients will continue to receive necessary access to speciality care.

• Hospital-based specialist consults will not be affected by this change.

• This change will have the added benefit of increasing access to primary care physicians.

Use More Effective Testing to Diagnose Infertility •

•

Current evidence indicates that imaging of the sinuses is not required when diagnosing most sinus problems.

•

When imaging is required, X-rays are not as effective as other approaches such as CT scans.

•

Avoiding unnecessary X-rays of the sinuses will prevent patients from being needlessly exposed to radiation.

•

•

Refer Patients to Specialized Clinics for Chronic Hip and Knee Pain to Improve Arthritic Care •

•

•

Reduce unnecessary hip and knee CT/MRI scans and surgical consultations by referring patients to the new province-wide system of musculoskeletal rapid access clinics.

Patients who are referred to musculoskeletal rapid access clinics are seen promptly by a specially trained physiotherapist, nurse or physician in order to evaluate the next best steps for their condition.

This change will result in greater access to CT and MRI imaging for patients who need it most and reduce the exposure to needless radiation for others.

Update the use of Ambulatory Cardiac Monitoring Devices (Loop and Holter Monitors) •

•

New minimum technical requirements for outpatient cardiac monitoring tests to help ensure high-quality cardiac diagnosis consistent with current clinical guidelines will be specified.

Loop recorders, an older and outdated form of technology used to evaluate cardiac electrical activity in out-patients, will no longer be funded.

•

Sometimes patients are asked to visit their primary care provider to obtain a referral letter to see a specialist they have recently seen for the same problem.

When a stable patient is seen by the same specialist for the same

• All patients are assessed by their surgeon and anesthesiologist prior to surgery to ensure that the patient is suitable for the proposed surgery and to determine the appropriate anesthetic care.

• This change means patients have improved access to specialist and family physician care as it will cut down on unnecessary visits, procedures and testing.

Improve Access to Knee Arthroscopies for Patients with Degenerative Knee Disease • •

Perform Procedure to Remove Ear Wax Only When Medically Necessary •

•

For many patients, softening of ear wax with easy to use over the counter treatments resolves the problem over time without medical intervention.

Ear wax removal will be covered when it is causing hearing loss and simple over-the-counter treatment is unsuccessful, or if the immediate removal of wax is needed to diagnose or treat other ear conditions.

•

Patients who ask their doctor to remove ear wax when it’s not medically necessary may be required to pay.

Conduct Larynx Examinations During Stomach Examinations Only When Medically Necessary •

When there is no suspicion or evidence of a problem with the patient’s larynx, completing an additional examination of the larynx as part of the examination of the stomach is not medically necessary or helpful to the patient.

This will prevent unnecessary laryngoscopy services (an examination of the vocal cords) being performed at the same time as an examination of the stomach.

Continue Access to Urine Pregnancy Tests When Medically Necessary

Improve Access to Primary and Specialty Care by Simplifying Referrals to Specialists •

Reducing ineffective knee arthroscopies will prevent unnecessary surgery and improve access for those with knee injuries and other conditions which do benefit from surgery.

Premiums to support house calls will be paid only in circumstances where patients must be seen at home including frail elderly, housebound and palliative patients.

Patients that are not frail elderly or housebound can be seen in their doctor’s office.

There is a long history of implementing effective, evidence-based care. Past appropriateness changes include the following: •

Sinus ultrasound This procedure has been replaced

by CT or sinus endoscopy, as these have been deemed as a more effective standard of care.

•

P r e - o p e r a t i v e echocardiography (ECG) Pre-operative ECGs for noncardiac elective surgery are only eligible for payment when the service is medically necessary and is not payable solely for the pre-operative preparation of the patient. Pre-operative ECGs and chest x-rays prior to colonoscopy, cystoscopy, carpal tunnel release and arthroscopy should not be routinely requested as part of the preparation and are not eligible for payment when ordered solely in preparation for these procedures, unless deemed medically necessary.

•

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL) was added to the list of insured indications for HBOT use. HBOT is eligible for payment for ISSHL when the patient is treated concurrently with corticosteroid (unless corticosteroids are inadvisable in the particular case), and treatment is initiated within 14 days of a diagnosis of ISSHL is made or confirmed by an otolaryngologist.

29 million babies born into conflict in 2018 – UNICEF

UNICEF calls for increased support for parents forced to raise their babies and young children in conflict-affected areas More than 29 million babies were born into conflict-affected areas in 2018, UNICEF said today.

Armed violence across countries including Afghanistan, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria and Yemen meant that, throughout last year, more than 1 in 5 babies globally spent their earliest moments in communities affected by the chaos of conflict, often in deeply unsafe, and highly stressful environments.

“Every parent should be able to cherish their baby’s first moments, but for the millions of families living through conflict, the reality is far bleaker,” said UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore. “In countries around the world, violent conflict

has severely limited access to essential services for parents and their babies. Millions of families lack access to nutritious food, safe water, sanitation, or a secure and healthy environment to grow and bond. Along with the immediate, obvious dangers, the long-term impacts of such a start in life are potentially catastrophic.”

When young children experience prolonged or repeated adverse and traumatic events, the brain’s stress management system is activated without relief causing ‘toxic stress’. With no basic services, no health facilities, poor sanitation, no food, and deepset trauma, families struggle to survive. I see despair in the eyes of the children I meet.

The conflict has taken away their childhood,” UNICEF worker in South Sudan.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the landmark Convention on the Rights of the Child, in which, among other things, governments pledged to protect and care for children affected by conflict.

Yet today, more countries are embroiled in internal or international conflict than at any other time in the past three decades, threatening the safety and wellbeing of millions of children. Hospitals, health centres and child friendly spaces – all of which provide critical services to parents and babies – have come under attack in conflicts around the world in recent years.

Providing safe spaces for families and their young children living through conflict – where children can use play and early learning as outlets for some of the trauma they have experienced; and providing psychosocial support to children – and their families – are critical parts of UNICEF’s humanitarian response.

When caregivers are given the support they need to cope with and process trauma, they have the best possible chance of providing their young children with the nurturing care needed for healthy brain development – acting as a ‘buffer’ from the chaos around them.

“Parents who interact with their babies can help shield them from the negative neurological effects of conflict. Yet, in times of conflict, parents are frequently overwhelmed,” said Fore. “Ultimately what these families need is peace, but until then they desperately need more support to help them and their children cope with the devastation they face – 29 million new lives and futures depend on it.”

Metrolinx lowers minimum load requirements for new PRESTO cards to a nickel

By Chris Fox, Commuters will soon be able to load a new PRESTO card with as little five cents but they will still have to shell out $6 for the card itself.

Metrolinx has announced on its blog that it is lowering the minimum amount of money that can be loaded onto a PRESTO card from $10 to five cents.

The change will mean that rather than having to shell out at least $16 to purchase a new card and load it with the minimum balance, commuters will now be able to do so for $6.05.

The change will be particularly helpful for parents of children under the age of 12, who previously had to purchase a PRESTO card and load it $10 just to take advantage of the TTC’s kid’s ride free initiative.

“We know the minimum load requirement is a concern among our customers, who see it as a barrier to switching to PRESTO,” Executive Vice President of PRESTO Annalise Czerny said in the blog post. “By taking this first step in lowering it to five cents across in-person retail and service outlets, we’re making it easier for more people to discover the many benefits of getting a card, whether it’s automatic top-ups when funds get too low or balance protection on lost or stolen cards.”

Metrolinx says that the five cent minimum balance requirement will go into effect for customers at Shoppers Drug Mart and other in-person outlets, including GO customer service counters as of Oct. 28.

The transit agency says it will then be introduced for all self-service machines and online transactions “in the near future after additional software changes are tested and rolled out.”

In the blog posts, Czerny said that Metrolinx would have preferred to just eliminate the minimum load requirement entirely but couldn’t have done so without costly technical changes.

“Lowering the minimum load to five cents is the lowest option available since the penny is now obsolete.

Removing it entirely would require substantial technical changes that would take a while and be costly to roll out, and this solution is something that can be put in place immediately,” she said.

The TTC plans to phase out tokens in favour of Presto by the end of 2019.

The transit agency previously phased out paper metropasses at the beginning of 2019.

FOCUS Ghanaian Parents, Curriculum Night and School Councils

By Joe Kingsley Eyiah, OCT, Brookview Middle School, Toronto-Canada As I sat in Cafeteria of Brookview Middle School on the night of September 26 , 2019 among the staff and a large number of parents who had gathered for Brookview Middle School’s curriculum night I could count ONLY one or two Ghanaian parents present. Yet we have a good number of Ghanaian students at this school!

At the entrance of the Cafeteria the staff volunteers of the school council were busily canvassing parents who showed up at the curriculum night for membership. It could be described as one of the most successful and well attended curriculum night at Brookview ever since I started teaching at this largely immigrant community school in Toronto-Canada, nineteen years ago.

The administration and teachers of the school had prepared for the night. It was a big opportunity for parents to experience a “full day” of their child’s life at school and interact with the teachers of their children in both core and elective subjects. Parents were walked through the curriculum and expectations of Grades 6, 7 & 8 as prescribed by the Ontario Ministry of Education.

It is a fact that many Ghanaians living in Toronto have to do more than one job to make ends meet. However, we need not to sacrifice the education of our children on the altar of our jobs.

The best investment we can make now is in our children’s education.

That pays more than our double and triple jobs in the long term!

I was at this Etobicoke school council meeting to stand in for a friend who has a child at that school. I will never regret the time spent at the meeting. It was a golden opportunity for me to learn at first hand what goes on at school council meetings in Canada.

The School Council is an important part of school in this country.

It brings the concerns and the best advice of parents, community and school staff together in one forum. Among other things the direction, advice and support given by the school council assist the school in its efforts to improve student success and achievement in a safe, comfortable learning environment.

Human rights commission launches public inquiry into reading levels among Ontario students Ontario’s human rights watchdog is launching a public inquiry into issues affecting students with reading disabilities.

The Ontario Human Rights Commission says a quarter of the province’s Grade 3 students, and 53 per cent of those with reading disabilities, are falling short of provincial standards.

The data comes courtesy of the latest figures from the Education Quality and Accountability Office.

The commission says lagging behind on literacy can have lifelong consequences and increase the likelihood of dropping out of school, experiencing mental

Are parents motivated enough to sit on school councils? Let’s try to explore some answers to these questions in the following paragraphs.

The Ontario initiative is the result of the recommendation of the Ontario Royal Commission on Learning (1995) and the Ontario Parent Council (1995) that school councils be established “to enable parents and students to assume a more responsible and active role in education programs and services within their local c o m m u n i t y ” ( O M E T, 1995,p.l).

Willingness to Serve:

Perhaps, the school council’s “participatory” role in academic development of the school is limited or even eliminated from its mandate by the OMET precluding the council from having specific influence in the policy area of curriculum.

This notwithstanding, the councils have tremendous “advisory” role to the play in the life of the school. How do we as parents take opportunity in the School Council to get involve with the education of our children? Is there

Research has indicated that there is no sufficient motivation for parents who are, for the most part, motivated solely by their narrow concern with educational opportunities for their children to get involve with the school councils (see Golench, 1997).

Though the government’s initiative, to me, provides activity and empowerment, many parents have seen school councils as nonstarter. Such parents find themselves either too busy with daily life or have no interest to volunteer on the school councils. There should be therefore appropriate motivation for enthusiastic voluntary participation from parents. My experience at the school council meeting mentioned earlier underscores my conviction of the tremendous opportunity that parents who serve on the school council have in influencing school life in their local community.

The public willingness must be whipped up and sustained among parents through encouraging parents’ involvement in school programs!

The potential for assistance and knowledge that lies in the community beyond the school’s parents is a significant untapped resource.

School Councils should not be seen as or make to look elitist.

I would therefore encourage parents (especially Ghanaians) to take opportunity of school councils and curriculum as well as information nights at their children’s schools to influence the school life for their children and the community at large. Those who can should volunteer to serve as community representatives on these councils. Those who can’t attend such important school/parent gatherings should make use of their representatives to let their voices and concern heard at council meetings.

Parents who are not council members are invited to sit in council meetings to contribute to discussions. This is an opportunity for parents to strength the school community.

COMPREHENSIVE SEXUALITY EDUCATION (CSE) Ghanaians divided over new sexuality education

Sharp divisions have greeted the guidelines on Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) for schools, with the educational authorities parrying the criticisms, saying the new policy holds the key to effective sexuality education for the youth.

Opposition to the policy hit a crescendo on Monday, September 30, with faith-based institutions and the National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights leading the charge against the reforms.

Some members of the public also took to social media to demand an immediate halt to the policy to save children from moral degeneration.

However, in a strong defence of the policy, the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), the state body that developed the curriculum, insisted that the condemnation of the guidelines was misplaced.

Although the GES maintained that the policy was meant to empower children with relevant knowledge on sexuality to overcome sexual harassment and make informed decisions, the stakeholders argued that the introduction of sex education at a tender age would expose children to sexual immorality.

Concerns In an interview, the Office of the National Chief Imam (ONCI) and other Islamic organisations in the country described the CSE as a “satanic” move that must be dropped in the interest of the country. The Personal Assistant to the National Chief Imam and Director of the Youth and Interfaith Programmes of the ONCI, Alhaji Khuzaima Osman, stressed that the Islamic Muslim community in Ghana was united in the call for the CSE to be reversed.

“We appeal to the Ministry [of Education] and the GES to drop that satanic agenda in the interest of national cohesion and moral promotion. The ONCI is joined in this endeavour by the Tijjaniya Muslims of Ghana, the Islamic Peace and Security Council of Ghana (IPASEC), the Islamic Council for Development and Humanitarian Services (ICODEHS), the Islamic Research

Association of Ghana and the Association of the 16 Regional Chiefs Imams. We would like to state unequivocally that the Islamic community does not accept any form of educating minors and pupils on sexuality. In our estimation, such a move is an attempt to hide behind educational reforms to brainwash the pupils with LGBT agenda,” he stressed.

Alhaji Osman added that the decision to introduce the CSE to children as young as five years should be rejected by all Ghanaians. “Ideally, Islamic jurisprudence recommends that sexual education be introduced to children above the age of 10. This is the time the children are expected to begin to understand the sociomoral consequences of the choice of sex orientation,” he said.

The Islamic community also called on the Ministry of Education and the GES to consider broad consultations with relevant stakeholders on the implementation of the controversial policy.

The immediate past General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG), Rev. Dr Kwabena OpuniFrimpong, stressed that although sex education was necessary in schools, the CSE, in its current form, lacked clarity and needed to be given a critical look.

“At the moment, there is public mistrust for the policy because we know that the CSE policy is in countries such as the United States (US), Canada and South Africa and the module being run there allows children sexuality rights, including the right to decide which sexuality they feel like being. If that is the module the GES is introducing, then it cannot be accepted for our children,” he said.

Dr Opuni-Frimpong stressed that to deal with the mistrust for the policy, the Ministry of Education and the GES must engage other stakeholders to either change the name of the module or clarify

the doubts people had about the CSE. “I was part of religious leaders who met the Minister of Education on this issue and he said the Ghana module of the CSE would not include Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) rights. He said it was going to be different from what pertains in other countries, but there must be that assurance from the ministry to the public on this matter,” he stressed.

Reacting to the concerns, the GES explained that media discussions that the service was introducing “explicit sexual information to children as young as four under the guise of CSE” was surprising.

A statement issued by the GES and signed by the Head of Public Relations at the service, Ms Cassandra TwumAmpofo, said the CSE had nothing to do with LGBT. It also explained

that the CSE was aimed at reinforcing the advocacy on sexual abstinence that had already been mainstreamed into the school system.

Background Ghana and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) launched the CSE programme this year in a bid to empower adolescents and young people to

deepen their scope of existing activities to attain a Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE). Known as the “Our right, Our lives, Our Future,” the CSE is supported by the governments of Sweden and Ireland. It is being implemented in Ghana, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe for effective delivery of quality comprehensive sexuality programmes.

Age issue The President of the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana, Mr King Ali Awudu, said the CSE policy was good because it would help shape children and make them conscious of sexuality issues. He, however, said the age for the implementation of the policy by the GES was what concerned the coalition. “The 1992 Constitution of Ghana does not allow for LGBT to be practised in this country and so we do not want to believe that the CSE will lead to those tendencies. What we will not accept is for kindergarten and lower primary children to be taught CSE. It can be taught from upper primary upwards,” he said.

Mr Awudu said the various teacher unions were still engaging with NaCCA on the content of the CSE, so there was the need for the public to be measured in their consumption of information on the policy that was being shared on social media.

Staunch defence A Law lecturer and staunch critic of the LGBT movement, Mr Moses Foh-Amoaning, also condemned the CSE policy on the grounds that some texts and modules in the curriculum that would guide the CSE in the country smacked of an endorsement of LGBT rights. Speaking to the media, he made a case that the CSE would pave the way for the LGBT movement to implement a strategy to get acceptance from African countries in particular. He said the LGBT movement had realised that Ghanaian culture and religions did not allow for LGBT and so it was using the vehicle of education to smuggle it into the country.

Erasmus+: EU boosts participation of African students and staff in 2019 The results of the 2019 Erasmus+ call bring the total number of exchanges between Africa and Europe to 26,247 since the beginning of the programme in 2014 The EU has invested an additional €17.6 million to support over 8,500 newly selected African students and staff to participate in Erasmus+ in 2019. This increase in Erasmus+ funding is one more step towards the commitment announced by President Jean-Claude Juncker in his State of the Union speech in September 2018 to have supported 35,000 African students and researchers by 2020.

Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, Tibor Navracsics, said: “Empowering young people in Africa is key in building a better future. This means promoting education, and this year, we have focused in particular on boosting cooperation with businesses to ensure that young people in Africa acquire all the skills they need for their professional life. The results of the 2019 Erasmus+ call bring the total number of exchanges between Africa and Europe to 26,247 since the beginning of the programme in 2014 and well on track to meeting the 2020 target of supporting 35,000 people as announced in the AfricaEurope Alliance for Sustainable Investment and Jobs. This year, 8,555 African and 4,649 European university students and staff will benefit from exchanges in 53 African countries and the 34 European countries that participate in the Erasmus+ programme.

Students will be able to stay abroad for up to one year, while staff exchanges last up to two months.

The additional funding of €17.6 million – coming from the Commission’s external financial instruments and the EU Trust Fund for Africa –has boosted participation by African nationals by 40% overall. For countries in Western Africa and the Horn of Africa, the number of scholarships has more than doubled thanks to the additional money. It has also made it possible to include more countries in the programme, such as Eritrea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Congo and Burundi, and to increase the number of exchanges, in particular for Benin, Cape Verde, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Somalia.

In addition, competing against the best students worldwide, 313 young students from 33 African countries were awarded scholarships for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree programmes. This is up from 239 scholarships from 27 African countries in last year’s selection. African institutions are increasingly involved in teaching the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master programmes, with 46 institutions from the continent collaborating in running the 44 programmes selected this year. They range from specialised universities to research institutes active in areas such as infectious diseases, biodiversity and ecosystems, or harnessing the power of cloud computing to benefit the environment.

35 projects promoting capacity building in higher education that are designed to improve the quality and innovation of programmes in African universities have been chosen for support. This year’s selection covers a wider range of countries than ever before, with Madagascar, the Comoros, Mauritania and Guinea participating in addition to the more traditional partners, which is a sign that Erasmus+ is successfully reaching out to new institutions on the continent.

Moreover, 39 small-scale projects have been selected for funding that help build capacity in the youth sector with African partners. These projects, involving youth organisations and the non-profit sector (NGOs and social businesses for example), promote informal learning and help young people start their own businesses and play an active part in their local communities.

Over 7,400 Deaths on Migration Routes Across Africa in Last Five Years, IOM Figures Show Overland routes in the Horn of Africa and the perilous sea passage across the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea have claimed the lives of at least 1,171 people since 2014 African migrants are perishing at a rate of about 25 persons per week – or about 1,300 annually – on the African continent, even before embarking on perilous sea journeys to Europe or the Arabian Peninsula. Since 2014 over 7,400 men, women and children have died in transit across Africa, new records published today by IOM’s Missing Migrants Project (MMP) show.

These recently added records bring the total number of deaths documented on the African continent to 573 in 2019, and 7,401 in the last five years. Moreover, these figures fail to capture the true scale of the tragedy, as they represent only fatalities which have been reported.

The new records are based on hundreds of eyewitness accounts collected from migrants through surveys by the Mixed Migration Centre’s Monitoring Mechanism Initiative (4Mi). The interviews with migrants were conducted by 4Mi between December 2018 and April 2019 in West, North and East Africa and were analysed by the Missing Migrants Project team before being added to its MMP database.

However, 4Mi interviews covered only a small sample of the total number of migrants on the move in Africa – meaning that hundreds of additional deaths likely remain unreported and, of course, uncounted.

Nonetheless, due to the absence of other sources of information, surveys such as those conducted by 4Mi reveal important information about migrants’ experiences, including the risks to life that people face during their journeys.

Records show that thousands of people lose their lives as they journey through North Africa, where 4,400 deaths have been reported since 2014. However, deaths in this region are not well documented,

and the true number of lives lost during migration remains unknown.

Migration routes in Sub-Saharan Africa also are dangerous, as demonstrated by the 1,830 deaths recorded by the project since 2014. Many of these deaths were recorded in West Africa, where 240 people were reported dead in 2019.

Overland routes in the Horn of Africa and the perilous sea passage across the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea have claimed the lives of at least 1,171 people since 2014. Migrants reported having witnessed others die from starvation, dehydration, exposure to harsh weather conditions, vehicle accidents and violence at the hands of smugglers.

Unfortunately, survey data contain no information on the identities of those whom survey participants witnessed die. Beyond initiatives like 4Mi, little efforts have been made to collect more information on people who die on migration journeys in the African continent. Their remains may never be recovered, nor their deaths investigated. Their deaths may also not be known by their families, who are forced to navigate daily life with the pain of not knowing whether their loved one is alive or dead.

Channelling additional funding into Erasmus+ is boosting participation by African people and organisations with the objective of supporting the mobility of 35,000 students and researchers from the African continent by 2020, leading to a total number of 105,000 by 2027.

Erasmus+ is the European Union programme for education, training, youth and sport for the period 2014-2020. Erasmus+ funds academic and youth mobility and cooperation between Europe and other regions in the world, including Africa, where it supports activities that are closely matched with the EU’s policy cooperation priorities for the continent. African countries have been able to take part in Erasmus+ as partner countries since 2014.

The operator of Toronto’s Pearson International Airport says it has agreed to test the new system developed at an Ivy League American university and marketed by a B.C. company.

Vancouver-based Liberty Defense Holdings Ltd. says the technology, known as Hexwave, can detect both metallic and non-metallic weapons ranging from guns and knives to explosives.

It operates by capturing radar images, then using artificial intelligence to analyze those images for signs of a weapon concealed in bags or under clothing.

Liberty says the technology is not able to recognize facial features and therefore does not pose a privacy risk, a position experts in the field view with some skepticism.

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority, which operates Pearson, says it will start deploying the technology in the spring of 2020 in a bid to boost security.

A Glance at the Impact of Criminality on Immigration and Citizenship Applications Persons who submit applications to Citizenship and Immigration Canada – be the applications for citizenship, permanent residence, visitor visas, student permits, work permits or to seek refuge - must be aware that their criminal history could be a principal determinant of the success of their applications.

Generally, a person with a criminal conviction or a very bad criminal record will not be admitted into Canada, not even as a visitor. However, if a prescribed period has passed after the person has completed his sentence or committed the offence and the person was not convicted of a subsequent offence during that time, they may be deemed to have been rehabilitated.

If you were convicted of, or committed, a criminal offence outside Canada, you may be deemed to have been rehabilitated if 10 years have passed after completing the sentence imposed upon you or after committing the offence, if the offence is one that would, in Canada, be an indictable offence

punishable by a maximum term of imprisonment of less than 10 years. If the offence is one that would, in Canada, be prosecuted summarily and if you were convicted of two or more such offences, then that period is 5 years after the sentence imposed was served or was to be served.

Almost the same conditions apply to offences committed in Canada. Don’t overlook the fact that the emphasis is not only on conviction, but also on commission, of an offence.

Immigration Regulation 133 outlines eligibility requirements of a person who intends to sponsor a person to Canada. Among other things, the sponsor should not be subject to a removal order and

should not be detained in any penitentiary, jail, reformatory or prison. From the day on which the sponsorship application was filed up to the day a decision is rendered on the application, there should be no evidence that the sponsor has been convicted under the criminal code of; an offence of a sexual nature, or an attempt or a threat to commit such an offence, against any person or has been convicted of an indictable offence involving the use of violence and punishable by a maximum term of imprisonment of at least 10 years, or has been convicted of an offence that results in bodily harm as defined in section 2 of the Criminal Code or has made an attempt or threatened to commit such an offence against any family member.

Immigration Regulation 133(2) however indicates that a sponsorship application may not be refused on the basis of a conviction in Canada or outside Canada if a period of five years or more has elapsed since the sponsor’s completion of the sentence imposed and the sponsor has demonstrated that he or she has been

rehabilitated, or if a pardon has been granted and has not ceased to have effect or has not been revoked.

A permanent resident with a bad criminal record is likely to be ineligible to apply for Canadian citizenship. Persons who have been convicted of an indictable offence in Canada or an offence under the Citizenship Act in the three years immediately preceding the application or who have been convicted outside Canada of an offence that is determined to be equivalent to an indictable offence in Canada are prohibited from applying for Canadian citizenship.

Persons who have been convicted of terrorism, high treason, treason, or spying offences while they were permanent residents or those who have served as members of an armed force of a country or organized armed group and that country or group engaged in armed conflict with Canada while they were permanent residents are barred from applying for citizenship.

Applicants on parole or on probation or serving a term of imprisonment in Canada or outside Canada are ineligible to apply for citizenship.

Persons charged with, on trial for, or involved in an appeal for an offence under the Citizenship Act, or an indictable offence in or outside Canada are also ineligible to apply for citizenship. Also on the excluded list are persons being investigated for, charged with, on trial for, or involved in an appeal for or have been

Pink auto insurance card goes digital for Ontario drivers Show your insurance proof on your phone: Phillips

TORONTO - Ontario drivers can now carry electronic proof of their auto insurance on their smartphones or other devices.

Finance Minister Rod Phillips says the pink paper insurance slip isn’t being eliminated yet, but being able to display the information on a phone can save drivers from rummaging through their glove compartments.

He says there will be a one-year phasein period, when insurers will have to issue a paper card in addition to the electronic option if it is requested.

Phillips says the electronic cards will feature safeguards that won’t allow them to be altered or edited, and privacy concerns are top of mind.

Drivers will be responsible for making sure their phone can display the proof of insurance, even with a poor signal, drained battery or damaged screen.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada says consumers have digital options in other sectors such as banking and retail, so auto insurers are pleased their customers will have the same choice.

GHANA gets first ‘Blind’ Criminologist Ghana has got its first visually impaired lady who has done her masters in Criminology and social order at the University of Nairobi in Kenya.

Miss Mahmoud Juliana Afia was born at Trede in the Ashanti region of Ghana in the year 1991. She started her basic education at WA school for the blind in the Upper West region of Ghana where she developed the spirit of hard work, determination, dedication and the desire for helping others in society.

She later went to Okuapemman senior high school where she was always among the best students in her class. No wonder she completed her secondary education with flying colours and proceeded to the University of Ghana.

At the University, she majored in Social work and minored in Sociology.

Based on her excellent performance, she came out with first class honours.

After her graduation, she did her national service at New Juaben Municipal Assembly, Department of Social Development and completed in 2016.

In September 2016 she was awarded a scholarship by the Mwalimu Nyerere African Union scholarship scheme for persons with disability to do her masters at the University of Nairobi Kenya where she read Criminology and Social Order which is a branch of sociology and completed successfully in 2018.

6th Pan-Nkrumaist Ghana Police: Do You Know Conference of the What Time It Is In Ghana?

Convention of Nkrumaists of North America (CNNA) - London, UK Ok, I couldn’t stop myself from using this title, but the truth is, Ghana police service should and must keep tempo with time---if indeed it wants to protect its officers from needless deaths and being under siege all the time.

September 28, 2019, saw an almost religious revival of Nkrumaism within the Ghanaian community in London, UK at the 6th PanNkrumaist conference of the Convention of Nkrumaists of North America (CNNA) at Lewisham. The theme of the conference was “The New Wave and continued relevance of Nkrumaism”.

Attendees included at least 3 generations of the Nkrumaist tradition.

Living ancestors like 86-year-old CPP organizer, May Stella Dontoh, the first female lawyer in Cape Coast, leading the chant of “choo boi” reminded the gathering of how political meetings often began in the Nkrumah era. She deplored attempts by the present government to rewrite Ghana’s history as an insult to the intelligence of Ghanaians. Others like Maj Gordon Amenyah (Rtd.) and a host of others offered personal insights into how our founding president operatedin his day. All described him as a good listener, a humble soul and a practical problem solver. H.E. John Offeh, former President Limann’s personal attorney and former High Commissioner to Kenya, entreated the conference delegates to an account of the former president’s early lobbying for an African UN SecretaryGeneral, culminating eventually to the late BusumuruKofi Annan’s appointment years later.

The plenary speaker, Dr. Adotey Bing-Pappoe, Program Leader in Business Economics, University of Greenwich, offered a broad and detailed analysis of how the 1966 coup and events thereafter, returned the Ghanaian economy steadily into the transactional neo-colonial economy it has now become.

He observed that the economy no longer met the needs of the ordinary Ghanaian but narrow foreign interests and those of their political proxies within the country, in the form of the two major political parties who have been given the privilege of governing by the Ghanaian voters since 1992.

Drs. Hakim Adi, Professor at the University of Chichester and Cecil

Gutzmore formerly of the Metropolitan University of London and the University of the West Indies,reviewed Nkrumah’s role in the global pan-African movement and its place and relevance in our current politics. They asserted that the failure of Africa to unite with the urgency that Nkrumah championed in his lifetime, has contributed significantly to the current poor economic state of Africa.

82-year-old Dr. Marika Sherwood, Hungarian-born Senior Researcher, Institute of Commonwealth Studies and author of “Kwame Nkrumah and the Dawn of the Cold War: The West African National Secretariat 1945-1948”, spoke on “What was important to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah”.

Mr. Solomon Tampuri a London barrister and Dr. GibrilFaal, visiting lecturer in practice at the Institute of Global Studies at the London School of Economics, concentrated on the future of Pan-Africanism as the only viable pathway of development for our continent of 1.3 billion people and advanced the cause of the burgeoning pan-African federalist movement being championed by intellectuals across the continent.

Local CPP stalwarts, including Ade Sawyerr and Emmanuel Amevor provided a thorough review of the infrastructural achievements of the Nkrumah era, upon which we still rely or which have been sold off or left to rot by the crony capitalist governments which followed. They also bemoaned the absence of well thought out and sustainable comprehensive social and vocational programs like the Boys Brigade, Workers Brigade, The Farmers’ Council, Ghana Women’ Association and many more, which prepared the youth for semi-skilled and skilled employment.

The delegates were of the opinion that Nkrumah’s ideas were even more relevant now than they were in the 1950s and 60s. The challenge was translating the underlying principles of his policies into present day needs of

Ghanaians and Africans.

Interestingly, the acting IGP,Mr. James Oppong Boanuh has advised police personnel to remain vigilant because of the recent killings of our men and women in uniform. But I wish he had told the entire police force ‘WHAT TIME IT IS’ in Ghana right now(in a plain language) , so as to make his message more comprehensible and hit a home-run .This is not a fluke for Ghana police--this ‘crisis’ has been building for decades but no one seemed to see it coming.

One of the youth delegates, Kofi AsieduBerchie presented a paper on “Perceptual Awareness of ICT for Africans”, emphasizing the role of ICT in Africa’s development.

Other young delegates charged the CNNA with finding a pathway to unity, to secure a better future for their generation.

To solve the police service’s problems they need to be identified first ,so I’m going to try to list them here:

1.I don’t care what anyone says, the major problems facing the police service right now are these: LACK OF A PERIODIC IN -SERVICE TRAINING AND POLITICIZATION Prof. Thaddeus Ulzen, OF THE SERVICE .No amount of Chairman, CNNA money spent on the hardware and Dr. Kofi Roberts, logistics can stop the ‘bleeding’ if a S e c r e t a r y - Tr e a s u r e r, constant training is not incorporated CNNA into the EQUATION ,in order to let the officers hone their skills and agility.

Fear for their own safety from lack

of in-service training can cause overreaction that could be very costly to the nation and the public. In law enforcement profession there is no situation that is totally safe, but there are situations that can get out of hand because the officer is insecure with his or her ability to control the situation.

So to win their game every police officer needs regular in-service training regardless of the rank.

Needless to say ,for the police service to live up to the public’s expectations , and to promote the officers’ longevity, the government should invest in the capacity building of the officers by encouraging a very vigorous in-service training and provide educational financial aid to those who are willing to further their education and acquire more law enforcement knowledge or they become casualties of time.

With that in mind, I’d like to urge our universities and colleges to introduce law enforcement courses that can enhance more avenues for the police personnel to study.

The in-service training is very crucial here. Because from the stories emerging from the slain officers’ incidents, it is most likely the officers made many ‘tactical errors’. By that, it means they gave their killers ‘perfect opportunity’, the killers were waiting for. From law enforcement’s perspective ,not approaching the suspects tactically, failure to take control of the situation with command presence, failure to get more cover officers, searching poorly ,failure to have body armor and not strictly following the police service procedures to achieve their law enforcement objectives can lead to deadly consequence .

For one thing, Ghana Police Service is not making use of K-9 dogs as a major part of the crime fighting arsenal--I wonder why! In fact, every police station in the country should have at least, two dogs to help the officers in their duties.

Arming the officers without training is not the answer. it’s going to create more challenges for the service public if we want to throw a on it .

2.Poor background check of the recruits and ‘Back -Door’ recruiting practices also hamper the selection process and the service’s integrity . To promote transparency in the system there is a need to have an independent Investigation outfit ,under the auspices of the ATTORNEY GENERAL ,to recruit, conduct the background checks and investigate any public grievances against the police personnel.

3.Poor general condition of service is affecting the morale of the officers tremendously. Have you checked the Police’ barracks lately across the land?

I wonder who is in charge of their living arrangements.

4.Ghana police is not completely ‘Independent’ .And, it’s always dangerous to politicize the security agencies in Ghana. The District and regional commanders cannot take bold decisions in the interest of the officers cont’d on pg 63

Ghana’s obesity problem blamed on rise in fast food Fast food restaurants are springing up all over the country, especially in urban centres. But the food on offer is as a real health threat to consumers. In the city of Tamale, the Verity Restaurant wants customers to remain healthy.

Nayabri David is chopping up vegetables in the kitchen. David is the head chef of the restaurant. In his nine years of experience cooking both local and inter-continental dishes in Ghana he found a lot of bad practices in many restaurants, he told DW. “I realized they are using too much unnatural spices and also using oil to fry chicken. Not only chicken but any other meat without, even proper seasoning,” he added.

The chef says that there is no need to deep fry food.

He prefers to grill the meat, which he believes to be much healthier. Experts agree. They say excess fat in food can lead to hyperlipidemia, which means high levels of fat or cholesterol in the blood. This represents a major health risk and can lead to obesity.

Technology and the University of the Western Cape in South Africa found that 43 per cent of Ghanaians are obese. One of them is 17-year-old Farihan Tiyumba who currently weighs 125 kilograms (275.5 pounds). Farihan is deeply worried and unhappy. “I don’t feel myself. If I go out people look at me somehow. Some call me obolo,” he told DW. Obolo means an obese person in Ghana. Farihan’s four siblings are also obese. They have been put on therapies which include food control and regular workouts.

The problem is that almost all of these places fry their food. This city, just like any other city, town or village in Ghana, is full of such joints. The kind of food they sell, compounded by the urban sedentary lifestyle, is one of the main causes of obesity.

Abdallah Yahaya, a senior physician and consultant at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, believes the trend to be very worrisome. “Obesity is caused by carbohydrate,” he says, going on to explain that without exercise, excess carbohydrate converts to fat “and then it increases your body weight. It is much more difficult to change their eating habits if they grow up on biscuits and industrial sweet beverages, Kumfah said.

The food culture in Ghana is another factor in the growing rates of obesity. Staple foods such as tubers and cereals contain high levels of carbohydrate. They represent no danger as long as you have a healthy lifestyle. But in modern Ghana, more and more people now lead very sedentary lives.

By now you know that we live in a world where selfishness is the norm. People are selfishly greedy and it can’t be explained. I totally agree that sometimes we need that time for ourselves where we should not be disturbed so we have to be ‘selfish’ for a bit to take care of ourselves in order to be in a better position to serve others better. That’s not the kind of selfishness I am talking about here. I am talking about the kind of selfishness where people simply don’t care about others all the time – and to them that is so normal.

When they are in the position to help others, they simply won’t. When they are in the position and know that there is a compliment in them for someone, they simply won’t.

When it’s in their power to give and share and love and sympathize and empathize and be compassionate, some people will intentionally NOT. DO. IT! They only care about themselves and they will even strive and push and strain to get ahead at the expense of others.

Now, that is awesomely evil.

If you are one of them you must stop. Stop and teach your younger ones to stop.

In this piece I am sharing with you 7 great reason helping others helps you live better. To see the results, don’t simply read, but action what you learn from here. Sometimes, it’s we sense that we have to mind our own business and that is natural but we also know that we can’t do that when someone is in distress and we are in the position to help. WE ARE CREATED HELPERS – it’s in all of us.

We are social animals – I believe this. None of us lives on an island all by themselves.

We are all here from one source – the Supreme Power, God Almighty (I’m not forcing you to believe it, but that is the truth). We are here for one another and we are here to serve one another. We cannot thrive by just minding g our own businesses because it doesn’t provide personal fulfillment. I don’t know about you but I don’t feel alive when it’s in my power to help and I don’t do it. Helping and serving others makes a person feel good because that is how we are fashioned – this is how

we feel alive. Tony Robbins said “the secret to living is giving”. This is so real – try it for yourself. When we shift into this belief system and thought and start living it out, we start making our lives better, and it will lead us into the next reason.

2. GIVE AND RECEIVE – we already know that this is a universal law and ignorance is no excuse when it comes to laws. Consciously or unconsciously, we receive what we give – good or bad.

So, you might as well start being conscious of yourself and pay attention to what you’re giving. Consciously give smiles, compliments, some of your time, kindness in any form, money, ideas, care and concern, connections and contacts, good advice, attention, recommendations, food, even shelter and hospitality – these will come back to you! You don’t have to go chasing after them.

Give and you will receive.

The great part of this is that you don’t receive the same measure as you gave but receive more. The energy you put out is what goes around and multiples back to you.

You may not experience of see the return immediately or from the same person, but for sure it will come back and it will come back especially at a time when you need it most. I have personally experienced this in my life so many times I have lost count of them. I simply give when I can and forget it. The most recent receiving I got was on my birthday in August 2019 when I was with my family in a restaurant. I don’t know how this young couple got to know it was my birthday because we were not talking about it or perhaps we did talk about it unconsciously.

When this couple finished dining and was leaving they said happy birthday to me so sweetly and that felt so good especially because I didn’t know them and wasn’t sure how they got to know about my big day. Before I could ask them they were gone. At the end of our dinner when we asked the waiter to bring our bill, OMG! This couple had paid for ALL. OF. US! What!?

This is so good a feeling. We can easily afford our food and the tip and that’s why we went there, but to have a total stranger show this kindness is awesome. It felt so good and I know for sure that it felt even better for them to have done that for us because they know that I will be pleasantly surprised and happy to know they did that for us. Now, this

is a good feeling you want to try. Okay, that’s not the end, two weeks later, friend of mine wanted my thoughts on some steps she needs to take with her life so I asked her to come for a working lunch. From the onset I knew that I was going to foot the bill for that lunch but I didn’t tell her. So I asked her to choose a restaurant she likes and she was opting for some ‘squirrel restaurants’ I mean some places I won’t go.

Simple! This is because she thought each of us will pay our bills. When I chose a better one she’ll say ‘it’s too expensive’ or ‘I can’t eat all of that so the food will go waste lets go to a cheaper place where we won’t pay so much. I laughed my head off for two days as we texted back and forth until I finally told her the lunch was on me. She goes ‘oh thank you Sarah, you don’t have to do that’. Now will you go to the restaurant I mentioned so we can have what we want and she said ‘yes, I actually like it’. I made her day and she was happy. I was even happier because it was like a comedy show to me. Money! We went to the same restaurant where the young couple paid for my family and as my friend and I had our working lunch I remembered it was the exact same place spot that the young couple sat who paid for my birthday dinner. Woow! Now I am paying it forward and I felt so good. My friend told her son while we still ate that she was at a ‘nice restaurant’ and the smile on her face was like heaven to me! Try this for yourself if you haven’t experienced it before or do it again and again if you know the feeling I am talking about.

Heaven will provide you the resources to do if you decide to help others.

3. A RIPPLE EFFECT OF HELP AND BETTER LIVING– when we help others and start a positive change in the lives others, we spark a light of help and care and love in them. If they are a normal human being they will not break the ripple effect but they will go ahead and do it for/to someone else. Have you ever been shown kindness and told ‘pay it forward’. When we do this the chain goes on and on and on. When we do this we don’t only start a chain reaction but we share the thought and belief that there is still good in the world. Imagine if fifty per cent of the world’s population did this and each recipient make a ripple effect of it and keeps the chin going on and on and on. This is one of the purposes of life. If you don’t know your purpose in life then I suggest to you that start from here – go out there and start helping others. Do you know something that will benefit others? Go out there and share it!

HELPING OTHERS LOWERS STRESS – have you ever heard of the term ‘Helper’s high’? It is another name for the uplifting feeling that we experience after doing a good deed or act of kindness.

This high is rooted in natural instincts to help our fellow humans. Evolution has wired us to help each other since helping others is beneficial; lowers blood pressure; increased self-esteem; less depression; lower stress levels; longer life; greater happiness.

When I am doing good and feeling great in the moment, I forget about all other concerns and that is a very good feeling.

I go out of my way every day to find something about people I want to compliment them

about – such as make-ups, hair styles, cloths, cars, and smiles.

Some people may reject your good deeds towards them and that is okay. I have experienced that too.

5. IT HELPS YOU BUILD CONNECTIONS– new connections are built every day. We may think that people come and go. Yes that’s right, but every encounter has a purpose and if we’ll think in this direction we’ll not take our kindness to others lightless. You kind words such as ‘have a blessed day’ may save someone from committing suicide. You giving of a compliment such as ‘you’re beautiful’ would help boost someone’s selfesteem and/or self-image. Last week, a senior I met in queue at the dollar store said that she liked my beauty and smile.

And she added ‘I like your height’. I smiled again and said thank you – then I added that my heels are helpful, because I was wearing high heels. She said, ‘I am short”.

Then I said, ‘I love your lipstick and your kind words.

You’re such a pleasant woman and I would be happy to hang out with you’. She said I was the sweetest person she had met in a long time. She then introduced me to her husband who was behind him and said the husband was 94 years and could still drive his car. I said no wonder they are blessed, because she was generous with her kind words and pleasantness.

What will you do today, this week, this month, and this year, to help someone; to make someone’s day; to save someone’s life, literally? Do it. It will come back to you in other ways, multiplied. Now, that’s a blessed life.

Frankly Speaking Plotting a Coup d’etat in Ghana to take over government?

Some people still live in the dark ages By: Prof. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB Over the past ten days, news is awash in Ghana on the government’s announcement that it had foiled plans by a group of people, civilians and military to destabilize the government.

The government announcement by its Information Minister detailed some of the plans the group, led by a Medical doctor, had been engaged in over the past fifteen months. The government said that the security forces had been monitoring the activities of the group, including the manufacture of arms and explosives inside a hospital (of all places) at Alajo, a suburb of the capital City Accra since June, 2018. A number of people, including the medial doctor and a senior military officer of the rank of Colonel, have been arrested and are in custody. Some of them have made a provisional appearance at a lower court and have been charged with some offences while investigations continue.

Ironically, members of the largest Opposition party in the country, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), including the former President of the Republic and their current flagbearer for the 2020 elections, John DramaniMahama, were very quick to dismiss the government assertions.

Among the flimsy excuses they gave were that the guns and ammunitions displayed by the government as having been seized from the potential coup plotters were not sophiscated enough to overthrow the government. Ironically, when some of the leading figures in the alleged coup plot were put before court, their lawyer was a top lawyer of the NDC party. And rumours were rife in the country that the top party hierarchy met at the residence of former President John DramaniMahama where it was decided which lawyer should be engaged to represent the alleged coup plotters. What are we to infer from all these? The pronouncements of the leadership of the NDC in this drama speaks volumes, and they are very worrying and scary.

Back to the coup plotters. Ghana’s present underdeveloped state and socio-economic and political problems have been due to the senseless and misguided intervention of triggerhappy, irresponsible, and restless soldiers, dating back to the 24th of February, 1966 when the first military intervention in Ghana’s political system happened through Lt. Col Emmanuel KwasiKotoka and Col. AkwasiAmankwaaAfrifa (3 years).

to power through coup d’etats, have nothing positive to show except chaos, indiscipline, wanton acts of corruption and human rights abuses.

At this stage in our national development, the last thing we need is another military coup and destabilization of the political order in the land of our birth. So anyone who has his/her head properly screwed in the right place and at the right angle will not contemplate another violent take-over of our nation’s government.

We have had enough of this nonsense, and it must stop.

And John DramaniMahamashould also watch his words, actions and writings if he wants to prove to Ghanaians that he is a credible alternative to the current government.And the message should be drummed into the ears of all and sundry, to any patriotic son and daughter of the land of our birth, that the era of senseless and misguided violent take-over ofgovernment in our country is long gone, no matter the plans of the likes of OfosuAmpofo, Mahama and their cohorts.

Rethinging Dental Services to meet demands of contemporary Dental Health Care in Ghana part 2 The Preferred Strategy The preferred adopted strategy for oral health care in Ghana should have these qualities and adequately address these issues of access: a. Should be close to the people it is to serve---availability and easy accessibility; is there transportation to clinic; is the clinic within a reasonable distance and open at reasonable times; do employers give time from work to go to dentist? b. Should be community-based and the communities should be involved in the planning. Clinic should be situated in the community; is there a way to get to or inform patients for appointments?

Should reach all elements in c. the community---the indigent, children, seniors and the handicapped; should be affordable to users; reasonable user fee or insurance coverage? friendly---easily d. User understandable system for the people.

Will need cooperation of 7. dental providers, governments (local and central) and the public.

Simple outreach programs with portable dental units are what is needed in the districts and sub-districts of all the Regions of the country. These portable mobile dental units are cheap and easy to repair and are easily moved from village to village. It will be easy to equip these units with simple solar systems in order to visit even small villages that may not have electricity.

We have a surfeit of engineering and technical graduates all over the country with no work to do and it is time they were put to work to undertake such very minimal and basic technical initiatives.

Some Ghanaians traditionally still clean their teeth everyday using chewing sticks, sponges and charcoal on plantain butts. Modern oral health education stresses use of toothpaste, toothbrushes and dental floss which many Ghanaians cannot afford. In fact even many trained nurses do not know what the dental floss is. Hence the traditional methods of tooth cleaning should be revived and emphasized.

It should be taught in dental schools as well as all Primary, Middle and Secondary Schools. It has been amply demonstrated that the chewing stick and sponges contain bactericidal and bacteriostatic active ingredients and saponins and that these traditional applications kill the bugs that form cavities and effectively protect teeth from decaying. With their daily use there would be no need for extra expenditure on fluorides.

Oral health education should again be brought back in the schools. In the 60s teachers examined teeth of Primary School children every morning. Hence teachers should be taught to in turn examine teeth of their school children.

Then a Community Oral Health Representative from the community can refer all those who are found to need dental work to the community clinic or nearest sub-district dental office.

More outreach programs should be done, with dental examinations and referrals carried out in places like churches (“Cleanliness is next to Godliness”), work places, businesses, and market places, all with the aim of spreading the good news about dental

health.

Dental Schools and Dental Associations should help create annual Dental Preventive Activities, eg. Happiness Day, or Smile Day, where everyone will be expected to smile at everybody they meet in the street. This, funny though it may be, will create awareness in the population about oral health, aside of the fact that smiling is supposed to keep one healthy.

The apparent shortage of dentists and non-availability of dental care services in most sub-district and rural communities in Ghana is further exacerbated by the fact that dentists are the only properly registered oral health providers in the country. Noticeably absent from the dental health care system in Ghana are other members of the dental auxiliary team, notably dental hygienists, dental therapists, certified and registered Dental Assistants.

This apparent shortage of dental professionals and affordable dental care is hurting the health of millions ( 82% ) of Ghanaians. While no one of these missing team members can perform the full range of services that a dentist can, they each have a defined scope of practice that reflects their training and abilities. At least a third of the services currently being provided by dentists in the Ministry of Health’s Oral Health Unit are within the scope of practice of the missing members of the auxiliary dental team.

Presently the Oral Health Training and Service Center in Kintampo in the Brong-Ahafo Region of Ghana is training dental assistants and COHOs (Community Oral Health Officers) whose duty, supposedly, will be to provide dental health education and preventive programs in schools independent of dentists. Their activity, however, will not much affect actual restorative treatments needed to reduce the backlog of existing dental caries( tooth decay ).

Of all the members of the dental team, dentists have the most training and expertise, and therefore command the highest remuneration rate. For reasons of efficiency, one principle of any dental public health program is ensuring ‘the right provider at the right time’ and using appropriate technology especially in a developing country like Ghana. This ensures scarce public resources are not wasted, for example, by paying $120.00 to a dentist to do a service that could have been done adequately by a Dental Therapist for $50.00. The overall dental disease in the Ghanaian population, particularly in rural school children, is at very low to low levels with few isolated areas of heavy backlog of untreated caries (tooth decay) and gingivitis (gum disease). In this environment with such basic treatment modalities midlevel dental providers have been found to be very effective where they are currently in operation.

The problem in Ghana is that even though dentists supposedly refuse to practise in rural communities, the Dental Association also refuses to endorse the training of an independent mid-level auxiliary provider who can work in the rural communities. The author has been working with these Dental Therapists in Canada for the last 15 years and has had not problems.

Ghana’s version of the auxiliary dental providers (COHOs) are kept inside the dental clinic with the dentists and are afraid to let them go out and work independently of the dentists in the rather neglected communities.

Although Ghana admittedly was one of the very few visionary commonwealth countries that trained Dental Therapists from New Zealand in the 70s, their deployment even then defeated the whole purpose of auxiliary utilisation.

Instead of letting them go to the rural communities where there were no dentists, all the therapists were deposited in Accra where almost all the dentists were located. We are repeating the same mistake with the COHOs. CONCLUSION We need to seriously expand the dental workforce if we are going to reach the rural 82% of Ghanaians who have been neglected for far too long. The potential to reach more people with needed oral health care can be significantly improved by expanding the number of individuals capable of providing care. This is akin to the development of the Medical Assistant model that is

presently in use in Ghana in response to the shortage of physicians in rural primary care. Other examples are Nurse Practitioners and Medical Clinical Assistants here in Canada.In Ghana, Physician or Medical Assistants have been employed in the system for a long time now even though there are more physicians than dentists for the same population. The total number of physicians in Ghana is about 2843 for a population of about 28 million, giving a physician to population ratio of 1:10,000 whereas that for dentistry is a deplorable ratio of 1: 100,000 and worse in most rural Regions. It makes a lot of sense therefore to reinstate the allied mid-level dental personnel equivalent, the dental therapists or COHOs as the preferable alternative to increasing the number of dentists who may not be willing to locate in rural regions.

Chiefs of the various associations in Montreal and Ottawa then entered the hall . Libation was then poured by Akyeamehene Nana Tabi Amponsah to invoke and rally the ancestral spirits of both Ghana and Canada for spiritual backup as custom demands.

Some of the invited guests were then given the opportunity to address the audience and the special message from PM Trudeau was read by Rana Sayeh Okatakyie Nana Yaa Opokua Awuraba accompanied by Abusuapanin Nana Kwaku Owoahene Acheampong then introduced the Omanhene as custom demands. Nana Kwarteng Amaning then swore oath of allegiance to the Canadian & Quebec governments, the native Chiefs of Quebec and the entire Ghanaians at large to thunderous applause from the audience as white powder was poured all over him.

Omanhene Oseadieyo Nana Kwarteng Amaning promised to uphold the office entrusted to him and do his best to help the community. The Omanhene then sat in state to receive homage as the sub chiefs and queens took turns to swear their oaths of allegiance. There was a short break to enable the royalty to change from their black costumes to colourful kente clothes with golden bangles adorned their hands.

Refreshments were then served to all in the hall as they danced till the wee hours of the morning. Keteke Ensemble did a cultural display and Obaapa Adowa dancers also treated Nananom and the invited guests to typical traditional dances.

The following day, Sunday 8th September, Nananom went to the Apostles’ Continuation Church in Montreal for a thanksgiving service after which a lavish party was organized at 14068 Blvd. Gouin West, Pierrefond, Quebec to round off the coronation ceremony. The MCs were Nana Tabi Amponsah, Nii Okai Robertson and Gina Ampong. Music was provided by DJ Khalid and group.

This column is devoted to answering your questions on health and discusions of diseases which are common among the African Canadians.

Heart disease in women : Is it diferent from men? dysfunction. Endothelial dysfunction — in which the lining of the artery doesn’t allow the artery to expand (dilate) properly to boost blood flow during activity — increases the risk of coronary artery spasm and sudden death.

When it comes to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease, men have traditionally garnered more attention than women have. You might think this is because men are more susceptible to heart disease than are women. But in reality, more women than men die of cardiovascular disease each year. Women are six times as likely to die of heart disease as of breast cancer. Heart disease kills more women over 65 than all cancers combined.

Historically, heart disease has been considered primarily a man’s disease. But recent statistics have shown that the rate of heart disease has declined in men but not as much in women. This may be due to a combination of biological and social differences.

How do heart attack symptoms differ in women and men?

The most common symptom of a heart attack in both men and women is some type of pain, pressure or discomfort in the chest. But it’s not always severe or even the most prominent symptom, particularly in women. Women are more likely to have signs and symptoms unrelated to chest pain, such as: § Neck, shoulder, upper back or abdominal discomfort

§ Shortness of breath § Nausea or vomiting § Sweating § Lightheadedness or dizziness § Unusual fatigue These signs and symptoms are more subtle than the obvious crushing chest pain often associated with heart attacks. This may be due to the fact that women usually have smaller arteries than men. In men partially blocked arteries ( plaques) tend to burst open whereas in women, plaques erode, exposing the inner layers of the artery.

Differences in symptoms may also relate to a condition called endothelial

Ultimately, women tend to show up in the emergency rooms after much heart damage has already occurred because their symptoms are not those typically associated with a heart attack. If you experience these symptoms or think you’re having a heart attack, call for emergency medical help immediately. Don’t drive yourself to the emergency room.

Are the risk factors different for men and women?

Although the traditional risk factors for coronary artery disease — such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and obesity — are detrimental to both men and women, certain factors may play a bigger role in the development of heart disease in women. For example:

There is no “normal” weight, but a normal body mass index (BMI) is helpful. This calculation helps you determine if you have a healthy or unhealthy percentage of body fat. BMI numbers of 25 or higher are associated with an increased risk of heart disease. Remember, though, even losing 10 to 15 pounds can help by lowering your blood pressure and helping prevent diabetes — both of which increase your risk of heart disease.

Exercise isn’t the same as being busy.

I have women tell me how busy they are, that they’re always running around doing stuff, and they may be tired at the end of the day, but they aren’t physically fit. Being active means doing something physical, getting exercise.

§ Mental stress and depression affect women’s hearts more than men’s.

Good exercise includes taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking, riding bikes with your kids. Using a pedometer (step counter) to track your steps is a good idea. The goal is to log 10,000 steps a day, which is about five miles. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t jog or join an exercise club, even a 30-minute walk every day results in big benefits for your heart.

§ Smoking is much worse for women than men.

Is the treatment for heart disease different for women?

§ Low levels of estrogen before menopause is a significant risk factor for developing heart disease.

In some women, artery blockages (also called a plaques) are evenly spread along artery walls, which is not treatable using traditional methods such as angioplasty and stenting designed to flatten the bulky, irregular, not-so-subtle plaques in men’s arteries. In women with these more diffuse plaques, drug treatment — rather than angioplasty or stenting — may be a better option.

Is heart disease something only older women should worry about?

No. While heart disease is the leading cause of death for women 65 and older, it’s the third-leading cause of death for women 25 to 44 and second-leading cause of death for women 45 to 64. All women, of all ages, should take heart disease seriously.

There seems to be an ethnic disparity in heart disease. Why are black and Hispanic women at higher risk of dying of this disease?

It’s complicated. Some of it is socioeconomic. Some of it is also the result of medical disparities. They may get fewer health screenings, or they haven’t received ethnic-specific health messages.

There are genetic differences to consider, too. Black women are more likely to have high blood pressure and diabetes, but they actually smoke less than white women do.

Other ethnic traditions may put a different emphasis on diet and physical activity.

What can women do to reduce their risks of heart disease?

As for the basics: Be active, maintain a normal weight and don’t smoke.

Women also need to take their prescribed medications appropriately, such as beta blockers, blood thinners and aspirin, and they need to better manage other conditions that are risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Some women at high risk may also benefit from the use of supplements, such as omega-3 fatty acids and folic acid. These are all things you can talk to your doctor about.

Regular exercise and healthy eating are the mainstays of heart disease prevention. § What’s a normal weight? How much weight should I try and lose?

We also know that men and women respond differently to certain heart medications, such as clot-busting drugs . There is also a difference between men and women in the effects of aspirin therapy. In women, aspirin therapy seems to reduce the risk of stroke more than in men, while in men it reduces the risk of heart attack more than it reduces strokes.

What these differences suggest is that if we use the same treatment in women that we use in men without understanding those differences, we may actually increase women’s risks of complications.

What’s next in the effort to prevent heart disease in women?

Recent studies, especially those giving results for men and women, have helped us begin to identify gaps in our knowledge and will spur researchers to look for answers that will improve care for women.

Doctors are becoming more aware of the different signs to watch for that may indicate a woman is having a heart attack — different than what men may experience.

Women and physicians also need to become better educated about heart disease in women. Knowledge helps women feel empowered to ask questions and learn more about how to prevent heart disease.

And as women become more informed about their risks, they’ll be better able to follow through with healthier lifestyle habits.

Juliana Arkoh wins four gold medals at Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship in Canada

She came, she saw and she conquered. 22-yearold Juliana Arkoh was in the Maple Leaf country in September to compete in the 8th Commonwealth P o w e r l i f t i n g Championship 2019.

The Mankessim-born scored high marks for her performance by winning four gold medals at the competition at the Holiday Inn Hotel in St. John’s Newfoundland.

FOOD AND RECIPES TURKEY STUFFING

THANKSGIVING ROASTED TURKEY

1 (18 pounds) whole turkey 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 1/2 quarts turkey stock 8 cups prepared stuffing 1.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Place rack in the lowest position of the oven.

Remove the turkey neck and giblets, rinse the turkey, and pat 2. dry with paper towels. Place the turkey, breast side up, on a rack in the roasting pan. Loosely fill the body cavity with stuffing. Rub the skin with the softened butter, and season with salt and pepper. Position an aluminum foil tent over the turkey.

Place turkey in the oven, and pour 2 cups turkey stock into 3. the bottom of the roasting pan. Baste all over every 30 minutes with the juices on the bottom of the pan. Whenever the drippings evaporate, add stock to moisten them, about 1 to 2 cups at a time. Remove aluminum foil after 2 1/2 hours. Roast until a meat thermometer inserted in the meaty part of the thigh reads 180 degrees F (80 degrees C), about 4 hours.

Transfer the turkey to a large serving platter, and let it stand for at least 20 to 30 minutes before carving.

EGYPTIAN FETA CHEESE OMELET ROLL Ingredients 4 eggs beaten 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

INGREDIENTS 1/4 cup (60 mL) butter 1 onion, chopped 2 celery stalks, chopped 4 cloves garlic, roughly chopped 1/4 cup (60 mL) fresh sage, finely chopped 1 tsp (5 mL) dried thyme leaves 1/2 tsp (3 mL) salt and freshly ground pepper (each) 12 cup (3 L) cubed day old crusty bread, about 3/4-inch (2 cm) pieces 3 large eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 cup (125 mL) fresh parsley, chopped 2 cups (500 mL) CAMPBELL'S® Ready to Use Chicken Broth DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Melt butter in a large skillet set over medium heat. Add onion, celery, garlic, sage, thyme, salt and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, for 7 minutes or until vegetables are softened. Cool slightly.

2. Toss vegetable mixture with bread, eggs and parsley. Stir in broth gradually until well combined. Transfer to a buttered 9x13-inch (3 L) casserole dish.

3. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until set in the center and golden on top.

Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

TURKEY GRAVY - Ingredients 1. Turkey: 2. 1 carton CAMPBELL'S STOCK FIRST™ Chicken Stock OR Campbell's® Ready to Use Chicken Broth 3. 3 tbsp (45 mL) lemon juice 4. 1 tsp (5 mL) each, dried basil leaves and dried thyme leaves, crushed 5. 1/8 tsp (0.5 mL) ground black pepper 6. 1 (12 lb / 5.5 kg) turkey 7. Pan Gravy: 8. 1 carton CAMPBELL'S STOCK FIRST™ Chicken Stock OR Campbell's® Ready to Use Chicken Broth 9. 1/4 cup (60 mL) all-purpose flour Directions 1. Mix stock or broth with lemon juice, basil, thyme and black pepper to create basting mixture.

2. Roast turkey according to package directions (until internal temperature of turkey reaches 180°F / 82°C), basting occasionally with basting mixture.

3. Once cooked, remove turkey from roasting pan and let turkey stand for 10 minutes before slicing.

4.Pour drippings into a saucepan– skim off fat leaving around ½ cup of drippings.

5.Add remaining stock or broth mixture and flour to drippings in saucepan.

6.Heat until mixture boils and thickens, stirring often. Serve with sliced turkey.

APPLE PIE Ingredients 1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch double crust pie

3 tablespoons crumbled feta cheese

1/1 cup unsalted butter

1 teaspoon milk

3 tablespoon all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1/4 cup water

Add all ingredients to list

1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 8 Granny Smith apples - peeled, cored and sliced

Method 1. In a small bowl, beat eggs and pepper together. In another small bowl, combine crumbled cheese with milk.

Method Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Melt the butter in a saucepan. Stir in flour to form a paste. Add water, white sugar and brown sugar, and bring to a boil. Reduce temperature and let simmer.

2. Heat oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Pour in eggs, and tilt pan until bottom is evenly covered. When edges appear Place the bottom crust in your pan. Fill with apples, mounded slightly. cooked, place feta mixture in a line in the center of eggs. Using a spatula, Cover with a lattice work crust. Gently pour the sugar and butter liquid over the crust. Pour slowly so that it does not run off. fold eggs over top and bottom of cheese, then fold sides over.

Bake 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft.

Introduction

Second, we are asking the Spirit to tenderize our heart so that we can abound in love for Jesus.

In our quest to cultivate an intimate relationship with God through personal time of prayer, we have looked at the A.C.T.S.L model of prayer. In this article we will look at the F.E.L.L.O.W.S.H.I.P model of prayer. This follows a ten-step pattern of prayer to enhance and deepen our fellowship with God. Arise and pray.

Choose a specific time, select a specific place and follow these steps to pray asking God for a deeper and stronger fellowship with Him:

First, we are asking for the understanding of God’s love for us to abound in our heart.

In the New Testament, the words endurance, perseverance, and patience are often interchangeable. All three speak of being faithful in your God-given assignments under pressure without quitting. The word patience means more than not being annoyed with someone or driving within the speed limit.

We must faithfully persevere for decades, and never draw back from our pursuit of the deep things of God’s heart.

It takes the power of God touching our spirit to keep us from quitting or drawing back.

3. Love 4. Light of Glory 5. One Thing 6. Worthy 7. Speech 8. Humility 9. Insight into Intimacy 10. Peace and Joy Kindly pay attention to the scriptures and the prayer samples given. Do feel free to include yours as well to it.

The key is to help you pray as an individual. The only way to learn how to pray, is to pray.

So, lets pray: F: FEAR OF GOD The Lord promised that He would put His fear into the hearts of His people (Jer. 32:40). He will do this much more as we ask Him to.

Therefore, we must ask the Spirit to impart the fear of God into our heart as He unites our heart to His heart and Word (Ps. 86:11). It is far easier to resist sin and not compromise when we feel even a small measure of the fear or awe of God in our heart. Therefore, ask Him to cause you to delight in the fear the Lord (Isa. 11:3). Ask Him to strike your heart with the majesty, awe, and dread of God (Isa. 8:13).

Ask the Lord to give you endurance to be faithful even in the difficult and dry seasons of life. Ask the Spirit to help you persevere on your fasting days. Another way to ask for endurance is to ask God to give you zeal for His heart and His house (John 2:17; Ps. 69:9).

Scriptures Being strengthened with all power . . . so that you may have great endurance and patience. (Col. 1:11, NIV) May the Lord direct your hearts into . . . the patience of Christ. (2 Thes. 3:5) “Zeal for Your house will consume me.” (John 2:17, NASB) Prayer

“I will put My fear in their hearts so that they will not depart from Me.” (Jer. 32:40) Unite my heart to fear Your name. (Ps. 86:11) His delight is in the fear of the Lord. (Isa. 11:3) “The Lord . . . you shall hallow; let Him be your fear and let Him be your dread.”

(Isa. 8:13)

Father strengthen my inner man with endurance, that I may do Your will with zeal and diligence, and not quit pursuing the deep things of Your heart. Impart endurance to me for fasting. Direct my heart into the patience and endurance in which Jesus walked. Give me strength to follow through in my commitments to You and to fulfill my ministry calling even when it is difficult to do.

Prayer

L: LOVE

Father release the spirit of the fear of God into my heart. Strike my heart with revelation of Your majesty, that I might live in awe before You. Release Your presence with holy dread that causes my

Third, we ask Him to help us love ourselves by seeing ourselves as God sees us. Many people despise themselves, and this hinders their walk with God. And Fourth, we ask the Spirit to cause love for others to abound in our heart.

Scriptures I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment. (Phil. 1:9) The love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. (Rom. 5:5) May the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another. (1 Thes. 3:12) May the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God. (2 Thes. 3:5) You formed my inward parts . . . You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought.

(Ps. 139:13–15) “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” (Mark 12:30) “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.” (John 15:9) “. . . that the love with which You loved Me may be in them.” (John 17:26) . . . that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— to know the love of Christ.

(Eph. 3:17–19) Prayer Father pour out Your love into my inner man by the Holy Spirit, that my heart may overflow in love back to You and to others (Rom. 5:5).

I also ask that You impart Your love for Jesus into my heart (John 17:26). I ask for grace to love God with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30). Allow me to comprehend Jesus’ love for me and to abide in it—stay connected to it (John 15:9).

Let me see myself through Your eyes and love who You created me to be (Ps. 139:13– 15).

L: LIGHT OF GLORY On the day of Paul’s conversion, he saw Jesus on the road to Damascus in a great light from heaven (Acts 22:6–11).

Moses prayed to see God’s

glory (Ex. 33:18). Afterwards, his face shone with the light of glory. Like Moses, we can also ask to encounter the realm of God’s glory.

Jesus said that His disciples would see an open heaven in which they would see the angels ascending and descending (John 1:51). Ask the Lord for supernatural encounters that include seeing angels and experiencing His glory and presence in dynamic ways. Ask Him to shine the light of His countenance on your heart.

Scriptures Suddenly a great light from heaven shone around me [Paul] . . . And since I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus. (Acts 22:6, 11) And he [Moses] said, “Please, show me Your glory.” (Ex. 33:18) “You shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending.”

(John 1:51) “I [Elisha] pray, open his [Servants] eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man . . . The mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. (2 Kings. 6:17) Lord, lift up the light of Your countenance upon us. (Ps. 4:6) His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength.

(Rev. 1:16) Oh, send out Your light and Your truth! Let them lead me . . . bring me to Your holy hill.

(Ps. 43:3) Prayer Father let me see the light of Your glory. Give me Holy Spirit encounters—dreams, visions, angelic visitations, manifestations of Your light, fire, and wind—as You gave to Moses, Isaiah, Ezekiel, the disciples on the day of Pentecost, and John on the island of Patmos (Ex. 33–34; Isa. 6; Ezek. 1; Acts 2; Rev. 1).

Scriptures One thing I have desired . . . that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord. (Ps. 27:4) “But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part.” (Luke 10:42) One thing I do . . . reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. (Phil. 3:13–14) I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. (Ps. 16:8)

O: ONE THING It is essential to consistently spend time before the Lord in His Word. In other words, to be a man or woman of one thing like David (Ps. 27:4), or Mary of Bethany, who sat at Jesus’ feet (Luke 10:42).

Set your heart to be a person of one thing. Commit yourself regularly to be a person of one thing and ask the Holy Spirit to help you to not lose this focus. I ask the Lord to show me, to intervene and speak to me, when I start to drift away from this one thing lifestyle. I ask Him to speak to me from Scripture, through dreams, or just by His still, small voice.

As I pray this prayer regularly, I am far more sensitized to receiving the Lord’s help and correction when I lose my

Prayer Father, I commit to live as a person of one thing. Help me to regularly sit at Your feet as Mary of Bethany did.

Strengthen me to desire and maintain a lifestyle that has regular times before You in Your Word. When I lose this focus, send Your Word to deliver me, as You did for the saints in the early church (Rev. 2:4–5, 3:1–3, 15–20).

Intentionality is key to intimacy with the Lord our God. Let us keep praying for a deeper walk with the Lord by following the F.e.l.l.o.w.s.h.i.p model of prayer daily.

Ghana Police: Do You Know What Time It Is In Ghana? cont’d from pg. 30 because the impression is created that any officer who is not liked by the immediate political head of the district, municipality or region is tagged as an enemy or a member of the opposition party.

Unfortunately, so many officers of the Police administration have forgotten that their officers did not swear to serve politicians, but the state of Ghana.

For all things being equal, Ghana police service can’t and won’t survive the siege it has found itself in if it doesn’t get rid of one of its major Achilles’ Heels--Career stagnancy .

Career stagnancy, whether imposed by the officers themselves or the administrators can be dangerous to their health and lives. Failure to read any police duties- related books or challenge yourselves can result in the loss of enthusiasm for your duties, and may lead to some ethical impropriety and even death. Once the officers come out of the Police Depot or Academy, they become so complacent in their duties till retirement. Such altitude cannot only show its ugly head in the officer’s day -to-day activities, but it can also make him a prey for the bad guys on the streets; who are armed to the teeth and constantly trying to explore the officer’s weaknesses .

It’s a fate that is befalling on some of police officers in recent time .

The aforementioned factors and other contributing factors are very rampant in the Ghana Police service, therefore the only way to ratify the situation is for the government to spend money on

in-service training, every six months for all the officers.

Without a doubt, every well- trained and well -groomed officer must have the ability to look at any situation in opposite ways. What seems logical and reasonable may in fact limit your ability to accomplish your law enforcement objectives or limit your chances go home in one piece.

One more thing: There is a huge amount of public mistrust for the police personnel and that needs to be addressed and fixed ,other than that every measures put in place will be a waste of resources and time In this day and age when the bad guys are targeting the officers and the entire service is under siege the officers should definately know ‘what time it is’ in Ghana---so as to start thinking like real officers (not as a ‘Rocky’ ) because law enforcement profession is a real serious business; not a ‘hobby’!.

Those who are not ready should rather find another profession where thinkingon -your- feet is not required. Perhaps ,playing with your phone while you’re on duty at the bank is not the best way to think-on-your- feet--if you know what I mean!

De Grasse wins silver in 200 metres for 2nd medal of world championships Canadian clocks 19.95 seconds in finishing behind American Noah Lyles Andre De Grasse accelerated on the straightaway and reached the finish line in 19.95 seconds to earn a silver medal in the men’s 200-metre final at the track and field world championships in Doha, Qatar on Tuesday.

World No. 1 Noah Lyles of the U.S., who entered the race with a year world-leading time of 19.50, won in 19.83. Alex Quinonez of Ecuador clocked 19.98 to round out the podium.

Canadian Aaron Brown was sixth in 20.10 “I think in the last 10 metres I might have [blown] it a little.

My legs got a little fatigued,” De Grasse told the CBC’s Scott Russell immediately following the race. “I think that’s when Lyles came and passed me. I’m not disappointed. I didn’t think I’d be here a year ago.”

De Grasse, who won bronze in the 100 on Saturday, earned Canada’s first medal in a world 200 final since Atlee Mahorn brought home bronze from Tokyo on Aug. 27, 1991.

The 24-year-old has now raced a combined seven times in a world championship or Olympic final and won seven medals.

CBC Sports analyst Donovan Bailey said Lyles looked “vulnerable and a little sluggish” in the semifinal heats and believed De Grasse would win the gold medal.

“I think Andre was peaking at the right time and definitely had a shot to win,” said Bailey.

“I thought he was going to run sub-19.80, I’m very happy for him and he’s definitely back from any injuries he’s had.”

He set a PB on Saturday of 9.90 in the 100 and fell 15-100ths of a second shy of his 19.80 PB in the 200 on Tuesday.

De Grasse returned to the track for his first 200 race of 2019 on April 13 and ran 20.20 seconds to finish second at the Grenada Invitational in St. George’s. He remained healthy and reached the podium in his five other 200s, including a bronze at the Diamond League Final in 19.87, before travelling to Doha.

Brown ‘gave everything’ in final “There are certain athletes that peak at the highest level,” Bailey said before the 200 final.

“I loved the highest level and competition and Andre seems to have taken a page out of my book here.”

De Grasse improved his record to 3-1 for 2019 in head-to-head meetings with Brown in the 200.

Brown was satisfied with his race in the final, given he felt “gassed” in Monday’s semifinal heats.

“I just gave everything I had in the final,” said the reigning Canadian champion in the 100 and 200. “It was a tough draw in Lane 3 but I gave everything I could off the curve and didn’t have quite enough at the end. To come out here and do this gives me a lot of confidence for next year.”

Bailey said Brown will reassess what improvements need to be made in the off-season but felt his race schedule had him peak

“way too early” for worlds.

“When I competed, every time I was at the top of the podium, it motivated [fellow Canadians] Glenroy [Gilbert] and Bruny [Surin]. Aaron’s placings are motivating Brendon [Rodney] to prepare and train better for the Olympics next year and Aaron, for sure,» said Bailey.

“Aaron knows he belongs [with the top sprinters]. He just needs to utilize the opportunity and go out and execute.”

‘Confident’ about relay chances

De Grasse will now join Brown as part of Canada’s 4x100 relay team that will compete in Friday’s heats.

“I’m going to talk to the guys tomorrow to see where their [heads are] at. I believe we have a great shot of winning this thing. Everybody’s confident,” De Grasse said.

The Canadian men placed sixth in the 2017 final while a slow start and sloppy exchange haunted De Grasse, Brown and Brendon Rodney in May at the IAAF World Relays in Japan, where they failed to qualify for the final with a time of 38.76 seconds.

This past spring, Brown told CBC Sports he is friends with De Grasse, having grown up together in Toronto and sharing the same goals on the track. But things are different when they hear the starter’s gun.

“We’re cool and good friends off the track but the little moments when you line up against each other [in the 100 or 200], you definitely want to take each other’s head off. We’re enemies for those 10 or 20 seconds.”

U-23 AFCON: Ghana drawn in ‘Group of death’ The Black Meteors of Ghana have been drawn in what can be termed the ‘group of death’ with hosts Egypt, Mali and Cameroon for the 2019 U-23 AFCON tournament.

The Black Meteors will be competing in Group A of the 8-team competition scheduled to be staged in Egypt from November 8-22.

The Total U-23 Africa Cup of Nations is held every four years and showcases some of African football’s emerging talents while also acting as a qualifier for the Summer Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
