Trudeau holds on with Liberal minority Gov’t By Jonathan Baah Annobil, Toronto
Canadians on Monday October 21, 2019 went to the polls and voted the Liberals led by PM Trudeau into power again in the 43rd Federal elections. This time around PM Trudeau was elected with a minority government. Before the dissolution of parliament, the Liberals had 177 seats but got 157 seat 13 seats shy of majority. The Liberals also lost the popular vote to Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives. The Liberals were vulnerable due to some scandals their leader went through but PM Trudeau prevailed and was given a second chance to govern again.

The voter turnout this year was 65.95 per cent of eligible voters as compared to 68.3 per cent in 2015. The Liberals had 5,915,905 votes (33.1%) with 157 seats, Conservatives:6,155,662 votes (34.4%)-121 seats, NDP: 2,849,214 votes (15.9%)-24
seats, Bloc Quebecois:1,376,135 votes (7.7%)-32 seats, Green Party:1,162,361 votes (6.5%)-3 seats, Peoples Party:292,703 votes (1.6%)-0 seat, Independent:71,854 votes (0.4%)-1 seat, Christian Heritage party: 18, 816 votes (0.1%)-0 seat. This election saw a record number of 98 female MPs elected. However, the former Conservative Deputy Leader, Lisa Raitt lost her seat (21, 236 votes, 36.5%) in Milton to Liberal Adam van Koeverden. (29,878 votes 51.4%). Jody Wilson-Raybould the former Liberal cabinet minister who was kicked out of the Liberal Party and contested as an Independent candidate for Vancouver Granville was reelected.
