The venue was Claireport Place Banquet & Convention Center, Etobicoke in Toronto and the occasion was the 17th edition of the Ghanaian-Canadian Achievement Awards.

People from all walks of life within the Greater Toronto Area and other parts of Canada as well as from Ghana were there to

witness such a glittering event.

Saluting the Farmers of Ghana Over the past couple of years, the governments in Ghana have instituted the first Friday of December to recognize the significant contributions of the farmers of Ghana to national development. Ghana is an agricultural country. More than sixty per cent of the land mass of the country is tropical rain forests which abounds in all kinds of natural resources.

The lands of these forests support massive agricultural production in both commercial crops and food production. The northern temperate lands of the country support massive production of other basic staple foods of the country: yams, millet, rice, shea butter, to name but a few.

The coastal communities also take advantage of the wide expanse of the Atlantic Ocean to engage in fishing to support the nutritional needs of the population. Fishing is therefore one of the most important occupations of our coastal communities. It is in recognition of the very important roles that these large sections of our population who engage is farming and fishing play to sustain our nutritional needs and produce the cash crops for export to boost out domestic economy that the “Farmers’ Day” celebration was instituted.

Cocoa production,has for more than a century, during the colonial times and since independence, been the main foreign exchange earner for the country. It has accounted all the time for more than sixty per cent of the finances generated to drive our local economy. Despite the hard work that cocoa farmers engage in to sustain our national economy, they get very little returns for their hard work and little or no recognition for the critical roles they play in driving and sustaining our national development. The people that have benefitted from the sweat and toil of the cocoa farmers have been people who are far removed from the hard work involved in cocoa production: corrupt politicians and bureaucrats and their hangers-on.

Many years ago, the then government of Ghana, after independence instituted a scholarship scheme to assist the children of cocoa farmers to acquire secondary school education. The management and administration of this scheme known as “CMB Scholarship”, named after the public agency that is in charge of marketing the cocoa produced by the farmers, siphoned these funds into their pockets, their private accounts, and financed the secondary school education of children whose parents have nothing to do with cocoa production. It is a known fact that very few, if any, of cocoa farmers’ children benefitted from these scholarships.

Recent events have also shown that corrupt politicians have used proceeds from cocoa production to finance their nefarious activities to the detriment of the whole nation.And very little recognition and attention is also given to the fisher folks along our coastal towns and villages who toil to engage in the dangerous fishing occupation to assist our nutritional needs.

Since the “Farmers’ Day” celebration was instituted, it has turned into an annual ritual of politicians showing up at these yearly durbars and gathering of farmers to show off and propagate their bankrupt political ideologies that do nothing to improve the lives of these hard-working farmers and fisher folks.

On this national day set aside for our farmers, we salute all those who engage in this occupation for their hard work and sacrifices over the years to sustain our country and its economy. We call on the current government in Ghana and future governments to make this a true and sincere recognition of the invaluable contribution of the silent, but productive section of our national population.

He took the pleasure to welcome all to another historic occasion. As usual, he saluted all award recipients, past and present. He also extended his sincere gratitude to the awards planning and selection committees as well as the sponsors without whose contributions the event would have been impossible to organize.

It was followed by presentation of certificate by Hon Judy Sgro, MP Humber River-Black Creek who also gave brief remarks. Hon. Shafiq Qaadri, MPP Etobicoke North also brought greetings from Queens Park and congratulated all recipients. Not left out was Vincent Crisanti Councilor for Ward 1 Etobicoke North who also presented a certificate to Ghanaian News. The new Consul General of Ghana in Toronto, Thomas Seshie brought greetings from the Ghana Government and the Ghana Mission in Ottawa. He admonished Ghanaian-Canadians to help motherland Ghana in any ways they could as the new Government is prepared to help Diasporans to use their knowledge to help Ghana achieve greater heights.

Consul General Seshie also thanked Canada for hosting us.

The guest speaker was Ms. Anastasia Subban, an Ontario Certified Teacher who spoke on behalf of her dad, Mr. Karl Subban (Principal of Brookview Middle School and Lavin Exclusive Speaker), the keynote speaker who could not make it due to an impromptu assignment with his son P. K. Subban of National Hockey League fame.

Anastasia began by congratulating the awards recipients for their achievements and contributions. She said, “Your community is better and our Canadian society is better. Canada celebrated 150 years and beyond in 2017 and you and your community are part of its history and making.” She then described the Ghanaian-Canadian community as a vibrant part of the Canadian population with approximately 80,000 people across Canada and with a large group of youth under 30 years of age. She then posed the following questions: “Do you agree that these youths are the future? Do you agree that we should care for them, love them, teach them so that they can lead the way into the future? Do you agree that we should lead them to a sense of pride? Do you agree that we should show them all the beauty they possess inside?” The guest speaker alluded the fact that, “It is this beauty that all children, youths, all the recipients of awards tonight, possess and I am here to speak about it. I call it POTENTIAL”.

She pointed out that potential is universal. It is ubiquitous. It is our children’s gift at birth and becomes their gift to their family, community and to our larger society when they develop it. There is an African Proverb which states, ‘it takes a village to raise a child’. The church, schools, families and institutions must continue to work together to raise our young people. We might not all agree on how to raise them but we can all agree that they possess potential so we must find ways to support or lead them to discover a big dream or goal.

She then concluded with another African Proverb-”What you help a child love can be more important than what you help them to learn.”

The award presentation was put in motion with Councilor Vincent Crisanti presenting the Professional Awards to Dr. Kofi Wudom, a family physician in Brampton, Dr. Victor Awafo, a director

in a Biopharmaceutical company in Toronto, Dr. Raphael Djabatey, a professor at University of GuelphHumber in the Department of Criminal Justice, Janet Brakohiapa, Lawyer and founder and director of Safe Haven Cancer Support Society, and Robert Bismark Otoo Senior Systems Analyst, Shared Services Canada. Special Award was given to Seth Oteng, Executive Director of Youth Bridge Foundation and the African Youth and Governance Conference Initiative who came all the way from Ghana was also presented

by Councilor Crisanti. Professional Achievement Award went to Joyce Aryee, Banking Advisor with Royal Bank of Canada, presented by Anastasia Subban . Young Professional Award was bagged by Nana Osei Addae, Technical Engineer at Ontario Power Generation Darlinton Nuclear Generating Station (OPG DNGS).

In the Religion Outreach category, Fr. Alex Osei, Director for the Pontifical Mission Societies (English Sector), Representative of North America in the Special Assembly in Vatican, Rome, Rev. Nana Amoakohene, Snr Pastor Trinity Baptist Church and Rev. Venunye Nyamadi, Snr. Pastor Apostles Revelation Society Church were presented their awards by Rev. Dr. Charles Mantey Snr. Pastor Disciple Revival Church.

In the Community Service category Constable Leo Addo, Toronto Police Department, Acting Sergeant Leon Presner, Durham Regional Police Service, Simon Adzraku, a.k.a.

TogbeKodjoKuma II, Albert Armah, Nursing Consultant, Director of Health Informatics and Quality, Constable Mark Affum, Serious and Organized Crimes (SOC) Unit, Toronto Airport Department of Royal Canadian Mounted Constabulary (RCMP), Priscilla Nana Yaa Hinnewah, professional social service worker with Harriet Tubman Community Organization as the Heritage Reintegration Counselor received their awards from Consul General Thomas Seshie.

Petra Famiyeh, was the sole academic excellence recipient. She graduated on top of her high school class in 2016 and was awarded Tom Leon Bursary, Governor General’s award and the Toronto Secondary Unit graduating student award for her work in the community and academic achievements, and in 2017 awarded the Staples annual Academic Scholarship, and placed on the University of Toronto Dean’s List.

Youth Leadership Award was presented

by Deputy Consul General John Bosco to Michael Appiah, a professional social worker, who recently graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA from Dalhousie University Masters of Social Work Degree Program and has been leading the youth of the Toronto Ghanaian S.D.A. Church for some years now.

The data released Wednesday show more than half of Canada’s core working population -- those aged 25 to 64 -- have earned degrees or diplomas from a college or university, the highest rate among comparable OECD countries, a group that includes the United States.

When it comes to educational laurels, women appear to be closing the gap with men: they accounted for half of all master’s degrees in 2016, and nearly half of all earned doctorates among younger Canadians aged 25 to 34.

The wage gap, however, persists. In Saskatchewan, for instance, a male with an apprenticeship certificate enjoyed a median income of $86,059, roughly $13,000 more than a female with a university degree.

“Even though women are more highly educated, they don’t earn more. Their

workforce participation rate isn’t greater. So education is clearly not the whole story,” said Laura Wright, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Saskatchewan.

One-fifth of seniors over 65 remained in the workforce in 2016, twice the rate of 1996, while median income for fulltime workers increased 30 per cent over the last decade. At the other end of the age spectrum, the employment rate for Canadians 15 to 24 dropped by almost six percentage points compared with 2006.

And another from the no-kidding file: getting to work isn’t getting any faster. The “journey to work” inched higher across Canada last year, even with more Canadians than ever opting to use public transit for their daily commute.

Wednesday’s release put the cherry on the statistical sundae Statistics Canada has been building since February, illustrating how life has evolved since 2011 for Canada’s 35.15 million people.

There are more people over 65 than under 15 in a historic grey shift; immigrants are driving population and workforce growth; there are more Indigenous Peoples than ever, and on average they’re younger than the rest of Canada; and young Canadians are living at home longer.

So where do we go from here?

The percentage of the population over 65 is expected to grow from 16.9 per cent to 23 per cent by 2031, while the proportion of children under age 15 flatlines and the ranks of the workingage population shrink.

Older Canadians are lingering longer in the workforce, some because they can, others because they must.

Wednesday’s numbers show a 31 per cent spike in the number of health workers since 2006 -- a good thing, given the aging baby boomers, said Julien Picault, a senior economics instructor at University of British Columbia.

“It’s not a crucial point, I think, at this stage, but it’s crucial that we start actually adapting.”

Ontario moves to ban eye tattooing, implanting eye jewelry

TORONTO -- Eyeball tattooing and implanting eye jewelry will soon be banned in Ontario after health professionals urged action to prevent the dangerous procedures.

The provincial government has amended a health-care bill before the legislature -- Bill 160 -- to include barring eyeball tattooing and the implantation of eye jewelry under the conjunctiva. Medical professionals recently asked a legislative committee to ban the practices as they continue to increase in popularity, saying it’s difficult to engage in the procedures safely.

Eyeball tattooing, which involves injecting ink into the whites of the eyes, made headlines in September when a 24-year-old alternative model from Ottawa said she allowed someone to dye her right eye purple and then developed major complications.

Catt Gallinger said she lost part of the vision in the swollen, misshapen eye and was facing the prospect of living with irreversible damage.

Expanded parental leave to come into effect by Dec. 3 OTTAWA -- New mothers and fathers planning to begin their parental leave on or after Dec. 3 will be able to spread their federal benefits over a longer period of time.

TTC to introduce two-hour transfers next year for PRESTO users By fall next year, TTC riders using a PRESTO card will be able to hop off along their route and do some errands before continuing on their way – all on a single fare.

On Tuesday, the TTC board approved a two-hour, time-based fare for PRESTO card users, to come into effect in August of 2018.

The move is part of a number of changes the TTC has been eyeing for some time as part of its project of modernizing the transit service.

While time-based transfers have been proposed as early as 2005, a report by TTC staff said conditions are finally right to implement the change.

“Today, we are at a point in the implementation of PRESTO and Metrolinx has provided clarity on their step by step approach to regional fare integration. These developments coupled with the new, flexible mobility options creating a more competitive environment mean now is the right time to introduce a two-hour transfer policy on PRESTO,” the report says.

Currently, someone riding on a single TTC fare is required to pay a second fare if they get off a subway, bus or streetcar for a short time and then get back on.

The current system means that those who don’t have an unlimited monthly pass are discouraged from stepping

off their ride, even to run a brief errand such as getting some groceries, dropping off a book at the library or picking up a package.

The time-based transfer will mean that people will have a two-hour window to stop at any location, before getting back on the TTC without having to pay again.

“The greatest benefit from this policy change stems from reducing the cost of transit, making it more affordable for multiple short distance trips, thereby giving TTC customers the flexibility they require to carryout everyday activities,” TTC staff said in their report.

The TTC estimates the policy will add five million customer trips per year.

TTC staff estimate the change will cost $11.1 million to implement for part of 2018 and will cost roughly $21 million per year to implement year-round going forward.

The staff report approved by the board today also called for increased offpeak service to support the higher ridership expected because of timebased transfers.

In addition to increasing off-peak trips, the TTC expects that the change will improve customer experience as well, as riders will be able to re-enter stations or vehicles if they exit at the wrong location.

Those coming to Canada are highly educated -- they have rates of postsecondary education more than double their Canadian-born counterparts -- and already comprise half or nearly half the labour force in major centres like Toronto and Vancouver.

The change in rules will automatically give more workers in federally regulated workplaces like banks, transport companies, the public service and telecoms the option of taking time off, and are likely to spur calls for provincial changes to allow the other 92 per cent of Canadian workers access to similar leave.

So far, Ontario has publicly said it will amend its legislation to match the new federal rules.

that spell out issues like salary top-ups.

As is, the federal parental leave program pays out benefits for up to 17 weeks for new mothers and allows parents to split an additional 35 weeks.

Under the changes first outlined in this year’s budget, new parents apply for employment insurance benefits, they will be able to decide whether to take additional weeks off, which can be split between parents.

Anyone who is already receiving 35 weeks of parental leave before the new measures officially come into effect won’t be able to switch and take the extra time.

The eligibility for the cash won’t change: A new parent will still need 600 hours of work in the previous 12 months to access benefits, while self-employed workers who have opted in to the EI system will need to have earned at least $6,888 in the last year.

The Liberals budgeted $886 million over the next five years for the new measures, and $204.8 million a year after that.

None of the parental leave changes will impact residents of Quebec, where the province runs its own parental leave program.

Asks Joe Kingsley Eyiah, OCT, Brookview MS, Toronto The parent/teacher interviews are instituted mainly at the end of every term or report card period to offer parents the opportunity of maintaining contact with school and staying ‘in the loop’.

The academic benefit to the child when the parent attends PTA interview is that it affords the parent better understanding about his/her child’s academic, emotional, social and physical development. The child’s strengths and weaknesses

in all subject areas can be explained in detail.

Teachers can then provide invaluable feedback on the behavior of the children in the classroom which can sometimes surprise parents.

Also, teachers are in the best position to determine when learning support is required. An interview enables teachers and parents to make plans for further educational support if necessary.

After such interviews some schools offer before

and after school support services as well as homework supportwhich parents may want to discuss and consider.

In conclusion, I strongly argue that parent/teacher interviews are very necessary and beneficial to both parents and teachers in the light of progress in relation to goal setting based on discussions during the interviews. They further improve the relationship between parents and students.

Ophthalmologists do occasionally use tattoo

ink for medical purposes, such as to reduce glare or corneal scarring using sterile equipment in an operating room.

Earlier this month, Dr. Kylen McReelis, an ophthalmologist and the chief of surgery at Peterborough Regional Health Centre, spoke to a committee at Queen’s Park, urging legislators to take action.

“Ophthalmologists around the world are experiencing increasing numbers of patients with blindness and eye loss because of the increasing popularity of eye tattooing,” he said.

“The risky act of tattooing

is being performed by untrained individuals who have no knowledge of the eye’s delicate anatomy.”

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said she supports the ban, adding that the government has a role to play when it comes to barring practices that can hurt Ontarians.

“Eye tattooing is something that’s very dangerous. ... It doesn’t seem to me there’s much of a standard or requirement for skills of folks who might be undertaking that procedure,” she said.

“That leaves the person who wants to get that tattoo quite vulnerable.”

In Ontario-Canada, schools are mandated to keep official records on all students as well and report cards and IEPs (Individual Education Plans for students performing below their grade level) from Kindergarten to High School in a folder at the main office known as the OSR (Ontario Student Records). Parents by law have access to their children’s OSRs at the school upon request.

However, copies of such records are usually sent to parents at home.

Homosexuality is definitely not on Ghana’s agenda!

President Nana Addo Dankwa AkufoAddo has stressed that homosexuality is a g a i n s t G h a n a i a n ’s tradition. Speaking on Aljazeera’s ‘Talk to Al Jazeera’ programme hosted by Jane Dutton on Al-Jazeera during the president’s recent visit to Qatar, he said that the issue of homosexuality is a “socio-cultural issue.” To that extent, the president said that there is no sufficient reason to warrant the legalization o f h o m o s e x u a l i t y.

According to him, legalizing homosexuality is not something his government is considering.

In most parts of the western world, gay and lesbian rights are enforced and same-sex marriages a re l egal. I n A f ric a however, homosexuality is still a vexed issue and the customs and traditions of most African societies abhor homosexuality.

In recent times, some western governments have sought to tie aid to the condition that, African governments legalise homosexuality.

This has continued to face stiff resistance from African governments and people. These are indeed difficult times for African leaders as they need these aids to support and improve their respective deteriorating economies.

Flashback to 2011, thenPresident John Atta Mills rubbished the UK’s threat to cut aid if he refused to consider legalizing homosexuality in Ghana.

UK Prime Minister at the time, David Cameron, had said aid would be cut to countries which failed to respect gay rights.

But the late-President was adamant that the UK could not impose its values on Ghana. “I, as president of this nation will never initiate or support any attempts to legalize homosexuality in Ghana. No one can deny

Prime Minister Cameron his right to make policies, take initiatives or make statements that reflect his societal norms and ideals. But, he does not have the right to direct other sovereign nations as to what they should do, especially where their societal norms and ideals are different from those which exist in Prime M i n i s t e r C a m e r o n ’s society.”

“While we acknowledge all the financial assistance and all the aid which has been given to us by our development partners, we will not accept any aid with ‘strings attached’ if that aid will not inure to our interests, or [if] the implementation—or the utilization—of that aid-with-strings-attached would rather worsen our plight as a nation, or destroy the very society that we want to use the money to improve,” Late President John Evans Atta Mills said.

Unlike the late President who was emphatic and unswerving with his opinions on why it will be impossible to legalize same-sex across African, other leaders have nevertheless also shot down any possibility of legalizing homosexuality in their respective countries but in a ‘wily’ way. They did so in a very ‘diplomatic’ tactic BUT the fact still remains, Africa is not ready to have a debate over legalizing homosexuality when the continent is beleaguered with issues of poverty, poor education, ill-health, violence, hunger, political insecurity, corruption, poor governance et cetera.

For example, Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta on the issue when speaking with former USA President, Barack Obama in 2015 said: “I repeatedly say that for Kenyans today the issue of gay rights is really a non-issue. We want to focus on other areas… maybe once, like you, have overcome some of these challenges, we can begin to look at other ones, but as of now the fact remains that this issue is not really an issue that is at the foremost minds of Kenyans and that is a fact.”

And just days ago, Ghana’s president Nana Addo Dankwa AkufoAddo also said the issue of same-sex relationships was not on the agenda of the West African country. Asked why homosexuality remained a criminal offence in Ghana, the president said, “I don’t believe that in Ghana so far a sufficiently strong coalition has emerged which is having that impact of public opinion that will say, change it; let’s then have a new paradigm in Ghana.

At the moment, I don’t feel and I don’t see that in Ghana there is that strong current of opinion that is saying that this is something that we need even deal with. It is not so far a matter which is on the agenda.”

Undoubtedly, different approaches on the issue

by Ghana’s Late President John Evans Atta Mills, Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta and Ghana’s current president Nana Addo Dankwa AkufoAddo but clearly, the same position – Africa is not ready to have a debate over legalizing homosexuality!

It is true Africa is the land of ‘mysteries’ but what people especially westerners do not understand is the fact that, those mysteries are not mysteries to Africans.

In other words, although they appear ‘mysteries’ to those who do not know, they are nothing but treasures in stock to the average African. Africa is the land of culture and of traditions as these have been with us since the beginning of time. No other continent compares to the riches of Africa when it comes to culture and traditions. What defines Africa therefore isn’t just the land as it appears on the world map but the people living on the land together with their ways of life. In other words, Africa is Africa because of our culture and traditions -- something we can never do away with.

As it was in the beginning, so it is today and so it shall remain till thy kingdom come. Homosexuality remains and will remain a great taboo in Africa.

Why? - Because in Africa, “Two male hippos

do not stay in the same pond”. Every wise man in Africa today knows the difference between pounded yam and faeces.

In Africa, “faeces are just food for flies”.

Although we preach against the attacks (both physical and verbal) on gay people in Africa today, we also preach against homosexuality as an act on the continent. Why? Because homosexuality attacks the very core of

our moral beliefs that make us Africans. The battle in legalizing homosexuality rights in Africa is going to be a long and a hard slog as we at this moment, need the West to help us tackle issues of poverty, poor education, ill-health, violence, hunger, political insecurity, corruption, poor governance amongst many others, that has plagued the world’s second largest and second most-populous continent!

The Major Mahama Trust Fund Bill is a Good Idea Gone Bad: Replace it with a General Law on Security Personnel Survivors’ Benefits Ny S. Kwaku Asare and Edward Akuffo We s o m e t i m e s t a k e f o r granted the services of our security personnel who work around the clock to keep us safe. It is therefore important to occasionally take time to express our gratitude for their work. Unfortunately, some of our security personnel get seriously injured or even lose their lives while trying to protect us. When that happens, it is important for a grateful nation to properly express its condolences, give them befitting burials, and have in place a survivors’ benefit scheme to take care of their families.

The recent gruesome murder of Major Mahama, at DenkyiraObuasi, is an example of a security personnel paying the ultimate price while on duty. The overwhelming public condemnation of the abominable act against the fine military officer and the public show of affection for his family demonstrate not only our rejection of mob justice but also our appreciation for and commitment to those who safeguard our peace. Further, his posthumous promotion from the rank of Captain to Major demonstrates leadership and responsible government in a democratic environment.

We commend the President Nana Addo Dankwa AkufoAddo and the Ministry of Defence for their leadership.

Major Mahama lived to make a difference. He died protecting the environment from the ravages of galamseyers.

Unfortunately, there are, however, several examples of security personnel who have paid the ultimate price while performing their duties. We recall the case of Corporal Mark Azure because this weekend is exactly three years that he was murdered at a police check-point at Tinkong on the Koforidua and Mamfe

road. Corporal Mark Azure told one of the authors when he was alive that he arrested 13 or so armed robbers who were terrorizing the people of Koforidua and its environs.

This act of bravely, according to him, earned him a promotion but as at the last time the author spoke to him, three months or so before he was killed, the police administration had not bestowed that honour on him.

We do not know whether this has been done or any arrests were made regarding the killing of this fine gentleman but one thing we know is that he has been buried and no one is speaking on his behalf. We have never met his wife or children but we knew that they resided somewhere in the northern part of Ghana.

On June 12, 2017, two armed men shot and killed Constable Micheal Kporyi who was on patrol duty at Michel Camp.

According to Superintendent Kwesi Ofori, “One month to his death, Michael complained to us of a swelling in his leg.

It was that serious so he took some time off work to seek medical attention. By the grace and mercy of God, he responded to treatment. On that fateful day, Monday the 12th of June, 2017, Michael decided to resume work even though the swelling in the leg had not completely subsided. On his way, his colleague advised him to return home and wear sandals instead because the police boot was tight and would compound the swelling. His zeal for work made him turn a deaf ear to his friend’s advice and rode off to work on his motorbike. At about 9:00pm Michael was shot in the head and chest by unidentified armed robbers and killed instantly on the Afariwa – Michael Camp road near Afienya” (see https://www.myjoyonline.com/ opinion/2017/August-11th/

There are others like Major Mahama, Corporal Azure and Constable Kporyi who die defending freedom, s afeguarding peace, and p r e s e r v i n g j u s t i c e . We , therefore, seize the opportunity provided by Parliament’s approval of the Major Mahama Trust Fund Bill to acknowledge and honour their sacrifices and to express our heartfelt condolences to their families.

We also salute all our security personnel and wish them well in the discharge of their duties.

While we wholeheartedly support Government’s effort to provide survivorship benefits to Major Mahama’s family, we believe that Parliament erred in passing a bill that singles out Major Mahama’s family for settlement. Respectfully, we are therefore calling on the President not to give assent to the Major Mahama Trust Fund Bill. Rather, we urge Parliament to replace the Major Mahama Trust Fund Bill with a Security Personnel Survivors’ Benefits Bill that provides predictable, timely and easy to access benefits to the families of security personnel who die in the line of duty.

The Major Mahama Bill is problematic at several levels.

First, it targets only the departed officer and his immediate family and ignores the other security personnel we have lost in the past. Second, the initiation and passage of the bill flout

the principles of universalism and non-discrimination. The power of parliament to isolate people for rewards, punishment or different treatment is dangerous and must not be countenanced. As a collective and representative body of the people, we expect that Parliament shall at all times pass general bills that are neutral, impartial, and nondiscriminatory. The rule of law requires that laws are made pursuant to the generality principle, which provides that when laws are made they must apply to broad categories of people and must not single out individuals or groups for special treatment.

We strongly believe that the approach to institutionalizing the Major Mahama Trust Fund Bill will not only create bitterness for other families who have lost their loved ones while serving Ghana, but as well, will affect the collective morale of servicemen and women. We as a nation have a moral duty to keep the morale of our service personnel high at all times. Without their efforts, our human and national security, as well as economic prosperity will be in serious jeopardy. We must operate a country that is committed to principles, fairness and equal citizenship as indicated by the preamble, letter and spirit of our Constitution.

It is our belief that the passage of the Major Mahama Trust Fund Bill sets a very

bad precedent. It is an unnecessary personification and personalization of governance. Parliament has erred! We believe that emotions have taken precedence over rationality and a good idea has gone bad. We need, under these tragic circumstances, to establish an institutional framework to serve the families of our security personnel who die in the course of serving our motherland not personal frameworks that breed bitterness and are symptomatic of treating equally situated persons differently.

Respectfully, we, therefore, call on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo not to give assent to the Major Mahama Trust Fund Bill but to send it back to Parliament for it to be replaced by a comprehensive Bill to cater for the families of ALL SECURITY PERSONNEL who pay the ultimate price while serving the nation. The President must seize this opportunity to reiterate our commitment to the rule of law, which requires that our laws conform to the generality principle and are not discriminatory.

May the soul of all security personnel who have died in the line of duty rest in perfect peace!

Fight against Corruption: Let’s give government a little more time US Ambassador US Ambassador Robert Porter Jackson has called on Ghanaians to be a little more patient with the government as it prepares to fight against corruption.

Mr Jackson said he is confident the current government led

by President Nana Addo Dankwa AKufo-Addo will tackle the canker head-on. “I am aware that investigations are ongoing,” he revealed.

The US Ambassador made the revelation in an interview with Media General’s Alfred Ocansey on Tuesday. He said there has been cooperation between the government and its US counterpart “and I feel optimistic that this is moving in the right direction”.

Mr Jackson said Ghana has the laws to tackle corruption but enforcement

has been the challenge. He therefore called for stiffer legislations like the Right to Information Bill to be passed.

“I am hopeful that in this Parliament, before it rises, we will see both of those bills. I think that will be proof that there is serious commitment.”

Special Prosecutor ’s Bill He observed that the current government has shown commitment in fighting the canker, so far, with statements made.

But he asked for more time for the government. “I would like to see the words translated into deeds and I believe that we will do that.

So, let’s give the government a little more time. They haven’t been in office a year yet and it is important to pass things like

the Special Prosecutor’s Bill.

“But it is also important that they be done correctly. So that when we have the legislation, it can be used to the fullest advantage.”

Though the Special Prosecutor’s Bill has been passed into law – an indication of a bold step to fighting corruption – many people think the head to be appointed may be partial.

Mr Jackson shares similar fears but wants more “latitude” given to the appointee. “It really depends on who is appointed to be Special Prosecutor and how much latitude that person has,” he pointed out.

“I don’t want to prejudge the outcome. I do believe the president, the vice president [and] others are sincere of their desire to change the conversation in Ghana.”

The Africa Rugby tournament schedules for 2018 was announced last week and Ghana has been included in the Men’s 15s Bronze Cup in April 2018 as well as in the Men’s 7s Tournament in October 2018.

In addition to the Africa Rugby tournaments, Ghana Rugby also intends to host an international men’s 7s tournament between eight nations that will primarily include West African Rugby Unions. A date for this tournament is yet to be finalised.

The inclusion of Ghana Rugby in the Africa Rugby tournaments followed the achievements by Ghana Rugby over the past three years and specifically the approval of the Union as Full Member of World Rugby.

“Africa has an unemployment crisis among its youth,” he stressed, noting that unless employment opportunities are created for them, Africa’s rapidly growing population of youths can give rise to serious social, economic, political and security challenges.

“Sixty-six million African youths earn less than $2 a day, less than the price of a hamburger,” the Bank President emphasized. “Sixty-six million is 8 times the population of Switzerland, 6 times the population of Belgium, the same as that of the UK, France or Italy, and 80% of Germany’s population,” he added.

T h e P r e s i d e n t i a l Yo u t h Advisory Group (PYAG) comprises nine members under the age of 40 who have made significant contributions to

the creation of employment opportunities for African youth.

Types of Removal Orders and Authorization to Return to Canada Canada removes foreign nationals deemed inadmissible or found to have committed immigration offences from the country from time to time. There are three types of removal orders. These are departure order, exclusion order and deportation order.

The form number of the document you receive from Citizenship and immigration Canada or the Canada Border Services Agency before you leave Canada or asking you to leave Canada will tell you the type of removal order issued to you.

A departure order has the form number IMM 5238 and it is an order that requires the foreigner to leave Canada on or before a specified date. Generally, a foreign national who is the subject of a departure order is advised to leave Canada within 30 days of the departure notice becoming enforceable. The foreign national so expelled does not necessarily have to obtain authorization in order to return to Canada.

Departure orders are issued in respect of less serious

cases of misrepresentation.

Involuntary compliance with a departure order within the stipulated time might result in the departure order automatically becoming a deportation order pursuant to section 224(2) of the Immigration Regulations An exclusion order has the form number IMM 1214B and it obliges the foreign national to obtain a written authorization in order to return to Canada during the period of exclusion (as specified in the document) that starts counting from the day on which the foreign national actually leaves the country. The most serious of all the removal orders is a deportation order. This has the form number IMM 5238B. Deportation orders are reserved for more serious cases and cases of non-compliance with the other less serious forms of removal orders. All persons who are the subject of an enforced deportation order must always require an authorization to return to Canada (ARC).

Generally, a removal order may, pursuant to section 49(1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA), come into force on the latest of the following dates: the day the removal order is made if there is no right to appeal; the day the appeal period expires if there is a right to appeal and no appeal is filed; or the day of the final determination of the appeal if an appeal is made.

With respect to a refugee protection claimant, notwithstanding section 49(1) of IRPA mentioned above, a removal order made with respect to them is, pursuant to section 49(2) of IRPA, conditional

and comes into force shortly after the claim is determined to be ineligible or the claim is rejected or declared withdrawn or abandoned or when the proceedings are terminated as a result of a notice to the effect that the claim is based on misrepresentation or is not the first one made by the claimant pursuant to paragraphs 104(1) (c) or (d) of IRPA. If you receive a departure order and you leave Canada within the required 30 days and you verify your departure with a Canadian immigration officer at the port of exit, you will not need an authorization to return to Canada. You may return to Canada subject to normal examination at the port of entry.

If you were issued an exclusion order and 12 months have passed since you left Canada and you obtained a Certificate of Departure (IMM 0056B) showing the date you left Canada, you do not need an authorization to return to Canada. You may return to Canada subject to normal examination at the port of entry.

If you have been the subject

of a deportation order, you will certainly need to apply for an authorization to return to Canada and success is not guaranteed. If the circumstances that led to the removal order being issued have not changed, it is less likely that you will be given permission to return.

For instance, if you were deported because of criminal inadmissibility, you will need to apply for criminal rehabilitation first. The processing fee for applying for an Authorization to Return to Canada is currently $400.00 CAD. The information provided above is superficial and not particularized. Windsor doctor named Ontario Pediatrician of the Year The Pediatricians Alliance of Ontario announced a Windsor doctor has earned the honour of Ontario Pediatrician of the Year.

Dr. Mark Awuku is the 2017 winner of the AAP Special A c h i e v e m e n t Aw a r d , also known as the Ontario Pediatrician of the Year.

The announcement was made Saturday by PAO President Dr. Hirotaka Yamashiro at the Practical Pediatrics Ontario 2017 Conference in Toronto.

Based in Windsor, Dr. Awuku has a passion for medical education.

Canada sets aside two bunkers at military bases amid global uncertainty, North Korean threat

By Murray Brewster Threat of a North Korean missile striking Canada prompts officials to adopt a Cold War defensive posture They are nightmare scenarios ripped straight out of Hollywood thrillers.

But rising global tension, notably over North Korea, has prompted federal officials to review and in some cases revise a series of critical contingency plans, including one that involves the evacuation of the federal cabinet to a secure military base outside of Ottawa.

The federal government has long

had contingency plans, known internally as CONPLANS, for a variety of emergencies running the gamut between earthquakes and floods through terrorism to full-scale war.

What is different lately, according to experts, is that officials are being forced to think more often in Cold War terms, particularly when it comes to the threat of a North Korean missile striking Canada, either as an accident or by design.

On Tuesday, Pyongyang tested the Hwasong-15 intercontinental missile, which the regime of Kim Jong-un claims can be tipped with a “super-large

heavy warhead” and is capable of striking anywhere on the continental United States.

Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan was asked Wednesday what would happen should a missile land in Canada.

“When it comes to any type of foreign threats, we take them extremely seriously,” he said.

“We’ve been looking at North Korea right from the beginning when I was given this portfolio. I am very mindful of the country’s missile testing that they have been doing. We believe that the diplomatic solution is the way to go, because I think that there is hope for it.”

The notion that Canada could be hit by incoming missiles was part of the Cold War defence mindset and planning, which disappeared in the early 1990s, said Andrew Rasiulis, a defence expert with the Canadian Global Affairs Institute.

“After the Cold War was over, we stopped thinking about those things. It fell off the radar, so to speak,” said Rasiulis, a former senior official at National Defence who once ran the Directorate of Nuclear and Arms Control Policy. “At the time, it was really a whole cultural shift.”

Cold War legacy At the height of the standoff with the former Soviet Union, the Canadian military had a series of bunkers to which the federal cabinet could retreat, including the so-called Diefenbunker, near Carp, Ont. There was also the deep underground complex at Canadian Forces Base North Bay and another centre at the now-decommissioned military base in Calgary.

Rasiulis said a whole generation of public servants have not had to think in those cataclysmic terms and had not even begun to consider it as late as 2014 when he retired.

And that’s why he considers the revision of continuity of government plan so significant.

But Rasiulis said he considers the likelihood of Canada being

struck by a North Korean missile to be low.

The thinking, however, over the last generation was, if there was thought of a nuclear event, it would be a terrorist dirty bomb, not a missile or missiles that could wipe out entire cities and result in tens of thousands of casualties.

Although on the surface they may not seem related, Rasiulis said the Russian annexation of Crimea and the lone-wolf, ISIS-inspired terrorist attack on Parliament Hill, both of which occurred three years ago, appear to have convinced officials that the capital was vulnerable.

Sean Maloney, a professor at the Royal Military College of Canada and a Cold War expert, said he believes the issue is bigger than just whether there are contingency plans to keep the government operating. He questions what sort of civil preparedness is going on.

A nuclear blast brings with it an electromagnetic pulse that would fry power grids over a much wider area than just the radius of the blast. That, in turn, would take down not only businesses but public infrastructure, such as water and sewage plants.

“That is just the start of the problem,” said Maloney. “People have not thought that through and they don’t want to discuss it because it’s too overwhelming for them.”

He said during the Cold War, there was also a sense of “lethargy” because people were

resigned to the fact that once the missiles started flying everything would be over.

Maintaining the power elite Maloney wrote a paper in the late 1990s about the federal government’s contingency plans in the event of a thermonuclear war with the Soviet Union.

It was entitled Dr. Strangelove Visits Canada, referring to the 1960s Stanley Kubrick comedy about what could happen if the wrong person pushed the wrong button.

Some of the issues raised in his paper could find new life in this new era of uncertainty.

“Critics of civil defence programs argued that protecting government leaders in shelters and not providing similar facilities to the population as a whole was ‘undemocratic,’ [and] designed to maintain the power elite,” said Maloney who added the current plan to reconstitute the government “sounds very 1950s.”

The government of former prime minister John Diefenbaker conducted the first largescale training exercise for its contingency plan to evacuate Ottawa in December 1959.

It saw one North Star transport plane and one Labrador helicopter put on 30-minute standby to evacuate senior government ministers and officials from the east side of the lawn on Parliament Hill to the air base in nearby Rockcliffe.

The Major Mahama Trust Fund Bill is a Good Idea Gone Bad: Replace it with a General Law on Security Personnel Survivors’ Benefits We sometimes take for granted the services of our security personnel who work around the clock to keep us safe.

It is therefore important to occasionally take time to express our gratitude for their work. Unfortunately, some of our security personnel get seriously injured or even lose their lives while trying to protect us. When that happens, it is important for a grateful nation to properly express its condolences, give them befitting burials, and have in place a survivors’ benefit scheme to take care of their families.

The recent gruesome murder of Major Mahama, at Denkyira-Obuasi, is an example of a security personnel paying the ultimate price while on duty. The overwhelming public condemnation of the abominable act against the fine military officer and the public show of affection for his family demonstrate not only our rejection of mob justice but also our appreciation for and commitment to those who safeguard our peace. Further, his posthumous promotion from the rank of Captain to Major demonstrates leadership and responsible government in a democratic environment. We commend the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Ministry of Defence for their leadership. Major Mahama lived to make a difference. He died protecting the environment from the ravages of galamseyers.

Unfortunately, there are, however, several examples of security personnel who have paid the ultimate price while performing their duties. We recall the case of Corporal Mark Azure because this weekend is exactly three years that he was murdered at a police checkpoint at Tinkong on the Koforidua and Mamfe road. Corporal Mark Azure told one of the authors when he was alive that he arrested 13 or so armed robbers who were terrorizing the people of Koforidua and its environs. This act of bravely, according to him, earned him a promotion but as at the last time the author spoke to him, three months or so before he was killed, the police administration had not bestowed that honour on him. We do not know whether this has been done or any arrests were made regarding the killing of this fine gentleman but one thing we know is that he has been buried and no one is speaking on his behalf. We have never met his wife or children but we knew that they resided somewhere in the northern part of Ghana.

On June 12, 2017, two armed men shot and killed Constable Micheal Kporyi who was on patrol duty at Michel Camp. According to Superintendent Kwesi Ofori, “One month to his death, Michael complained to us of a swelling in his leg. It was that serious so he took some time off work to seek medical attention. By the grace and mercy of God, he responded to treatment. On that fateful day, Monday the 12th of June, 2017, Michael decided to resume work even though the swelling in the leg had not completely subsided. On his way, his colleague advised him to return home and wear sandals instead because the police boot was tight and would compound the swelling. His zeal for work made him turn a deaf ear to his friend’s advice and rode off to work on his motorbike. At about 9:00pm Michael was shot in the head and chest by unidentified armed robbers and killed instantly on the Afariwa – Michael Camp road near Afienya” (see https:// www.myjoyonline.com/opinion/2017/ August-11th/shot-on-duty-biographyof-constable-michael-kporye.php).

There are others like Major Mahama, Corporal Azure and Constable Kporyi who die

defending freedom, safeguarding peace, and preserving justice. We, therefore, seize the opportunity provided by Parliament’s approval of the Major Mahama Trust Fund Bill to acknowledge and honour their sacrifices and to express our heartfelt condolences to their families. We also salute all our security personnel and wish them well in the discharge of their duties.

While we wholeheartedly support Government’s effort to provide survivorship benefits to Major Mahama’s family, we believe that Parliament erred in passing a bill that singles out Major Mahama’s family for settlement.

Respectfully, we are therefore calling on the President not to give assent to the Major Mahama Trust Fund Bill. Rather, we urge Parliament to replace the Major Mahama Trust Fund Bill with a Security Personnel Survivors’ Benefits Bill that provides predictable, timely and easy to access benefits to the families of security personnel who die in the line of duty.

The Major Mahama Bill is problematic at several levels. First, it targets only the departed officer and his immediate family and ignores the other security personnel we have lost in the past.

Second, the initiation and passage of the bill flout the principles of universalism and non-discrimination. The power of parliament to isolate people for rewards, punishment or different treatment is dangerous and must not be countenanced. As a collective and representative body of the people, we expect that Parliament shall at all times pass general bills that are neutral, impartial, and non-discriminatory.

The rule of law requires that laws are made pursuant to the generality principle, which provides that when laws are made they must apply to broad categories of people and must not single out individuals or groups for special treatment.

We strongly believe that the approach to institutionalizing the Major Mahama Trust Fund Bill will not only create bitterness for other families who have lost their loved ones while serving Ghana, but as well, will affect the collective morale of servicemen and women. We as a nation have a moral duty to keep the morale of our service personnel high at all times. Without their efforts, our human and national security, as well as economic prosperity will be in serious jeopardy. We must operate a country that is committed to principles, fairness and equal citizenship as indicated by the preamble, letter and spirit of our Constitution.

It is our belief that the passage of the Major Mahama Trust Fund Bill sets a very bad precedent. It is an unnecessary personification and personalization of governance. Parliament has erred!

We believe that emotions have taken precedence over rationality and a good idea has gone bad. We need, under these tragic circumstances, to establish an institutional framework to serve the families of our security personnel who die in the course of serving our motherland not personal frameworks that breed bitterness and are symptomatic of treating equally situated persons differently.

Respectfully, we, therefore, call on President Nana Addo Dankwa AkufoAddo not to give assent to the Major Mahama Trust Fund Bill but to send it back to Parliament for it to be replaced by a comprehensive Bill to cater for the families of ALL SECURITY PERSONNEL who pay the ultimate price while serving the nation. The President must seize this opportunity to reiterate our commitment to the rule

of law, which requires that our laws conform to the generality principle and are not discriminatory.

May the soul of all security personnel

who have died in the line of duty rest in perfect peace!

The Youth Entrepreneurship and Innovation Multi-Donor Trust Fund will serve as a financial and operational instrument for the Jobs for Youth in Africa Strategy, with initial support of US $4.4 million from Denmark and Norway.

The African Development Bank is also developing the Enabling Youth Employment (EYE) Index to measure youth employment outcomes and enabling policies at country levels.

“With this amazing group of very diverse young individuals, we even hope to exceed the Bank’s goal to create 25 million jobs and 50 million youth equipped with the right skills,” said Thakkar. “It is time to change the narrative about Africa’s youth!”

PEOPLE AND PLACES 3rd Annual PIWC North York Scholarship Award

By Jonathan Baah Annobil, Toronto The 3rd Annual Pentecost International Worship Centre (PIWC) North York Scholarship Award took place on Sunday 19 November, 2017 at 2256 Sheppard Avenue West, North York.The recipients were chosen from prospective applicants for academic excellence, community involvement and lastly financial need.

For this year’s awards, eight recipients were given $1000.00 each for their education. Mr. Jude Botchway, a real estate agent with Dream Maker Realty Inc., contributed $6000.00 and Future Leaders in Progress (FLIP) of PIWC also contributed $2000.00 making a total of $8000.00 to cover all the deserving 8 recipients.

Jude in his remarks stated that it was his way of giving back to his community to show appreciation to the youth’s hunger for knowledge about real estate business and financial prudence.

It was also to thank the Lord for financial blessing bestowed on him this year. He promised to continue with this

kind gesture yearly and was given a present in appreciation of his gesture by the scholarship committee. This year’s recipients were: Ernestina Boateng, Florence Larbi, Jeffery Antwi, Christabel Mensah, SammyArmstrong Atta Agyeman and Komanda Otchere.

The PIWC Scholarship Committee North York District consists of Doris Osei Bonsu, Emmanuel Popo-Ola, Augusta Sarkodie, Brenda Danso and Grace-Anim Ansah.

Frankly Speaking Of Death, Dying and False Prophecies in Ghana By: Dr. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB

One of the very disturbing aspects of the belief systems of Ghanaians irrespective of their ethnic, religious or educational backgrounds is the strong belief that no death comes from natural causes. Whether they are highly educated, least educated or illiterate, all Ghanaians cling to this screwed belief system thatany death, through a freak accident, short or long illness is caused by witchcraft or juju.

When a young person dies, through whatever circumstances, it is because the witches saw some future prosperity in him/her and that is why they “ate” him/her. If a 99-year old person dies and he/she was rich, it was because of his/her wealth that the witches “ate” him/her or some jealous person used juju to kill him/her. If he/ she was poor, then he/ she died because he/she, himself/herself was a witch. This belief system has become so pervasive in our culture and beliefs that we never attribute the cause of death in our society to natural causes.

Because of this belief system, Ghanaians of all stripes do not show any interest in finding the real diseases and events that kill people in our society.

We are not interested in autopsies when someone dies. Modern medical practices require that autopsies (post-mortems) be conducted on dead

persons to determine the real cause of death, even if someone shot the person at close range or the person was killed through a freak accident.

This practice is designed to find solutions to the cause of the death or to disabuse the minds of relatives and society of any lingering issues, confusion or doubts about the cause of death.

The above practice is totally lost on the conscience of Ghanaians and we continue to attribute death to witchcraft, or juju. The culprits in the witchcraft saga are usually some old lady …usually poor…in the family, and grieving family members will rain insults on such poor old fellows, and sometime even abuse and physically manhandle them. In the meantime, no one has been able to prove beyond any reasonable doubt about the potent “power” of these witches. So we continue to die, young, middle aged, old, poor, rich and famous.

For all the news coming out every day in our society in Ghana and abroad,

our people continue to die from all kinds of conditions: malaria, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart failure, kidney failures, cancer, etc. In all these situations, our explanations of the causes of death are simple: witchcraft, or juju because of envy or hatred for the family member or co-worker.

Over the past couple of years, a new phenomenon has entered our society that is further fueling our screwed belief systems to absurd proportions: it is the phenomenon of so-called “prophets” and quack and fake pastors who have taken over the psyche of a large section of the population with very disturbing and absurd prophesies and predictions of who is going to die next week, next year, before Christmas and New Year and all kinds of nonsense.

And if someone, usually a high profile public person, dies suddenly, these fake prophets will engage in competition with each other as who had prophesied or “seen” the death before it happened.

Then, as expected, the socalled prophets entered the fray with some of them claiming they got the revelation that KABA was going to die. Some also started predicting how some other highprofile personalities are going to die in Ghana soon! What kind of society do we have that tolerates these kinds of nonsense? Don’t we have any law that prohibits behaviors and utterances

that create fear and panic in society? If so, why do we allow these quack “prophets” and “pastors” to continue to create fear and panic among citizens of our country?

Anyone who knows this late Radio Presenter, KABA, personally, will attest to the fact that he was clearly overweight, obese and was known to have issues with high blood pressure and dangerous sugar levels. Even if the autopsy showed that he died of massive heart and kidney failure, friends, family and co-workers are not interested. No! he was killed by juju or witchcraft.

We all know that if you are obese in Ghana with a protruding stomach, that is regarded as a sign of good living despite the clear signs that you are signing a contract with death. Eating very well, fatty foods and little or no physical activity is our way of life and when

we die suddenly, it can only be the witches or one of our co-workers who killed us with juju out of jealousy. From all the available information, there is the likelihood that KABA could have been suffering from diabetes, hypertension and other forms of diseases related to obesity. But all that do not matter. What matters are the absurd claims of the so-called prophets and co-workers.

It is about time we stopped these absurdities, wild unfounded claims and nonsensicalities of attributing every death to juju and witchcraft otherwise Ghanaians will continue to succumb to preventable deaths without ever finding the real causes and proper cure for the prevailing illnesses in our society, most of whom are due to our dangerous and careless lifestyles and standards of living.

Let’s Talk More About Drug Abuse In Our Schools Now

Drug -abused tsunami is about to hit our schools and colleges, but how prepared are we?

WE’RE ON THE VERGE of losing this generation and, possibly the next one to drug abused, however, our policy - makers are fighting it with rhetoric .Our fragile and infant democracy is threatened if we don’t wake up now and do something drastic about this menace.

You think the brain- drain is bad for the country? Wait until you witness the dangerous effects of the youth’s brains being in the drain constantly because of drugs!

Drug abuse is taking over our schools, neighborhoods, communities and towns and, there are no comprehensive programs in place to deal with its effects vigorously. Perhaps, we see the drug abuse in Ghana as a plague, only infecting the poor and students from disadvantaged homes. Well, think again because your kids behind the gated communities are not immune.

Listen to this: I read in one report that out of the 731 drug-related patients admitted into our Psychiatric Hospital, 690 were students from tertiary institutions.

The report also said, 614 patients in our Psychiatric hospital were young people, between the age of 15 and 40.It was also in the news years ago that the proliferation of high drugs in SHS in Cape Coast and other parts of the nation was very alarming.

I’m filled with dread of the thought of the trauma of millions innocent Ghanaians who will soon be enduring if this drug abuse epidemic is not wellmanaged or controlled.

In fact, I’m nervous when I think of the dangerous effects of drug abused on the nation because I have spent the major part of my professional life ‘fighting’ and dealing with the victims

Why should we focus more on this issue like a laser beam in this side of the Atlantic? Well, if we don’t sooner than later the government will be forced to spend over three times as much per mental patient as per a student in SHS when things start to fall part uncontrollably.

The real effects of drug abuse: The real effects of drug abuse are not even the random homicide, other unnecessary deaths and serious addiction that go with the drug trade and consumption. However, the question is how is our handicapped police force or over-stretched medical delivery system going to handle such unprepared social tsunami? My main concern is the general rise in crime rate that inevitably goes with the drug abuse.

I have witnessed people who had sold their children, souls and bodies because of drug. Yes, I have seen addicts who had killed their own family members because of drug abuse. I have seen people who sold their possessions for drugs. I have seen very affluent families that went from grace to grass because of drugs. I have seen people who have engaged in burglary and armed robbery just to maintain their addiction lifestyle.

In essence, no one is secured or immune when it comes to drug abuse.

Parental Roles: As parents, we have very important roles to play in this .Yes chances are your children will never take any drug or alcohol. However, if you don’t get them hooked on something important and meaningfully at their early years, someone will introduce them to drugs.

It’s believed that when children are hooked on interesting things, like books or musical instruments, their chances of taking drugs are very small. So try to push books on your kids. Reading

It can also help children to learn how to think independently. Books are fun, relatively cheaper and, produce a sensible and admirable ‘high’. And, best of all, nobody ever ended up in an emergency room, jail, mental institution or mortuary for reading too much. Workplace Bullying is equally harmful and dangerous

By Golda Abena Quayson Bullying is usually seen as acts or verbal comments that could ‘mentally’ hurt or isolate a person in the workplace. Sometimes, bullying can involve negative physical contact as well. Bullying usually involves repeated incidents or a pattern of behaviour that is intended to intimidate, offend, degrade or humiliate a particular person or group of people. It has also been described as the assertion of power through aggression.

There is a lot of talk and expression of concern and disgust at bullying in schools and off campus including cyber bullying.

This mostly involves youth.

But what is not being talked about or being ignored is another very dangerous and disturbing form of bullying, directed at adults. This is the arena of “work-place bullying”.

Work place bullying or Mobbing unlike childhood bullying, is the tendency of individuals or groups to use persistent aggressive or unreasonable behavior against a co-worker or subordinate. Workplace bullying can include such tactics as verbal, nonverbal, psychological, physical abuse and humiliation. This type of aggression is particularly difficult because, unlike the typical forms of school bullying, workplace bullies often operate within the established rules and policies of their organization and their society. Bullying in the workplace is, in the majority of cases, reported as having been perpetrated by management and takes a wide variety of forms.

In my last article I wrote about cyber-bullying emphasizing on school children, teens and young adults who are using the technology to destroy one another. But what we should all know is that, these young women and men carry these behaviors into their working environments as adults if they are not checked.

Workplace bullying takes these forms: Serial bullying — the source of all dysfunction can be traced to one individual, who picks on one employee after another and destroys them, then moves on to another. It is probably the most common type of bullying at work. Secondary bullying is the pressure of having to deal with a serial bully which causes the general behaviour of the victim to decline and sink to the lowest level.

Pair bullying: this takes place with two people, one active and verbal, the other often watching and listening. Gang bullies or

workers. Cyber bullying, as mentioned previously is the use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behaviour by an individual or group, that is intended to harm others.

group bullying: is a serial bully with colleagues.

Gangs can occur anywhere, but flourish in corporate bullying climates. It is often called and usually involves scapegoating and victimization.

There is also vicarious bullying in which two parties are encouraged to fight. This is the typical triangulation, where the aggression gets passed around. That particular co-worker gets bullied by almost everyone.

Interestingly, there is Fashion Bullying where others make funny jokes about someone’s way of dressing, just because the person is not wearing brand names clothing to workplace or not dressing like them.

Regulation bullying — where a serial bully forces their target to comply with rules, regulations, procedures or laws regardless of their appropriateness, applicability or necessity.

This is mostly used by bosses and mangers. Residual bullying — after the serial bully has left or been fired, the behavior continues. It can go on for years.

Legal bullying — the bringing of a vexatious legal action to control and punish a person. It is one of the nastiest forms of bullying.

Also of note is Pressure bullying or unwitting bullying which is having to work to unrealistic time scales and/or inadequate resources. It is mostly used by retailers/fast food places/ restaurant/grocery stores and factories.

Corporate bullying is where an employer abuses an employee with impunity, knowing the law is weak and the job market is soft.

Organizational bullying is a combination of pressure bullying and corporate bullying. This occurs when an organization struggles to adapt to changing markets, reduced income, cuts in budgets, imposed expectations and other extreme pressures.

Institutional bullying is usually entrenched and is accepted as part of the culture. Client bullying is when an employee is bullied by those they serve.

The victims are usually subway attendants/public servants/nurses and frontline

Typical examples of work place bullying include: spreading malicious rumours, gossip, or innuendo that is not true, excluding or isolating someone socially, intimidating a person, undermining or deliberately impeding a person’s work, physically abusing or threatening abuse, removing areas of responsibilities without cause, constantly changing work guidelines, establishing impossible deadlines that will set up the individual to fail, withholding necessary information or purposefully giving the wrong information, making jokes that are ‘obviously offensive’ by spoken word or e-mail.

Some employers have a habit of intruding on a person’s privacy by pestering, spying or stalking, assigning unreasonable duties or workload which are unfavourable to one person, in a way that creates unnecessary pressure, under work - creating a feeling of uselessness, yelling or using profanity, criticising a person persistently or constantly, belittling a person’s opinions. They also include unwarranted or undeserved punishment.

Examples of these are blocking applications for training, leave or promotion, tampering with a person’s personal belongings or work equipment.

How can bullying affects individuals? It is sometimes hard to know if bullying is happening at the workplace. Many studies acknowledge that there is a “fine line” between strong management tactics and bullying. Comments that are objective and are intended to provide constructive feedback are not usually considered bullying, but rather are intended to assist the employee with their work.

If you are not sure an action or statement could be considered bullying, you can use the “reasonable person” test. Would most people consider the action unacceptable? People who are the targets of bullying may experience a range of effects. These reactions include: shock, anger, feelings of frustration and/ or helplessness, increased sense of vulnerability, loss of confidence, physical symptoms such as inability to sleep, loss of appetite, psychosomatic symptoms

The festival of Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ and conveys His message of love, tolerance and brotherhood. It is a celebration of humanity and mankind. Though Christmas is a primary festival of the Christian calendar, it still has a special significance in everyone’s life.

It is the season to move into the danger zoneof relationships. We get so stressed out about buying the right presents, staying within our holiday budget, or trying to please impossible in-laws that the tension inevitably spills over into our love lives.

Christmas can put an extra and unnecessary strain on your relationship, I really don’t want you to be one of the thousands of people knocking on the door of a marriage/relationship counselor once the holiday season is over!So, I really hope I can help you out with some extra relationship advice. First of all, you may as well acknowledge that you could be at risk of setting yourselves up for ‘failure’, Why? Well, the holiday season is often so stressful because of the huge expectations: Christmas time can be a stressful period for couples. Here’s how you can survive the season of apparent joy with maximum love and minimum heartache.

Christmas can heighten the feeling of alienation and add pressure to an already strained relationship.But despite the increase in pressure couples face, there are some practical ways to get through the period.Our consumerist culture tells us that if we don’t have the perfect gifts, the happiest Hallmark moments and the most loving and sane family, we fail at Christmas and life. This is not true. It is just a way of encourage people to buy, buy, buy.

People focus too much on the material possessions. ‘Love values’ are the things that will help sustain your relationship more than a pair of socks, jewelry or perfume.Couples should set realistic goals for Christmas; transfer your high expectations into acts of small kindness.

Ask each other,what are the small things we can do to make this a lovely time?

This could be as simple as being nice to each other or spending time together watching a movie.

Discuss money early One of the biggest stresses around the holiday season is financial pressure and spending big on presents. According to a survey, people are forecasted to spend billions of dollars on presents this year; half of which will be on credit or store cards and take more than six months to repay.

I believe that early communication is key to avoid financial stress. One partner might have a relaxed attitude to spending. Talk about what Christmas means to you before you go shopping and what you need and want. Nobody wants to be a Scrooge but you don’t want to over give either.I say parents should also bring kids into the conversation and talk about what is important for your family:It’s about managing expectations of what your family want and what you can afford.Everything doesn’t need to be bigger and better and more perfect.

I have a friend who has a two-present limit for her kids, one small and one medium and you know what, children can get excited about the little things.”

Put your relationship first Just ask each other, ‘how can we protect our relationship and stop things from getting out of hand?’ and ‘what can we do to get through it’?” What about you spend a family fortune to buy, buy and buy during the Christmas Season just to please family members and friends and end up straining your relationship…the most precious thing in your life…after Christmas is over?

Think and think deeply about this!

Workplace Bullying is equally harmful cont’d of workplace bullying and dangerous such as stomach pains, headaches, panic or anxiety, especially about going to work, family tension and stress, inability to concentrate, and, low morale and productivity.

How can bullying affects the work place? Bullying affects the overall “health” of an organization. An “unhealthy” workplace can have many effects. In general these include: increased absenteeism, increased turnover, increased stress, increased costs for employee assistance programs (EAPs), recruitment, etc., increased risk for accidents / incidents, decreased productivity and motivation, decreased morale, reduced corporate image and customer confidence, and, poorer customer service.

There are some general tips that employers can put in place or enforce for their employees to make their working environment habitable. Do encourage everyone at the workplace to act towards others in a respectful and professional manner. Employers themselves should not discriminate or display any preferential treatment towards some employees. Have a workplace policy in place that includes a reporting system. Educate everyone that bullying in any form is a serious matter. Try to work out solutions before the situation gets serious or gets out of control.

Educate everyone about what is considered bullying, and whom they can go to for help by providing resources. Treat all complaints seriously, and deal with complaints promptly and confidentially. Train supervisors and managers in how to deal with complaints and potential situations. Encourage them to address situations promptly whether or not a formal complaint has been filed. Have an impartial third party help with the resolution, if necessary. Do not ignore any potential problems. And most importantly, do not delay resolution. Act as soon as possible to stop bullying in the work place.

Heart-healthy diet: 8 steps to prevent heart disease Changing your eating habits can be tough. Start with these strategies to kick-start your way toward a heart-healthy diet.

Although you might know that eating certain foods can increase your heart disease risk, it’s often tough to change your eating habits.

Whether you have years of unhealthy eating under your belt or you simply want to fine-tune your diet, here are some hearthealthy diet tips. Once you know which foods to eat more of and which foods to limit, you’ll be on your way toward a heart-healthy diet.

saturated fat in your diet by trimming fat off your meat or choosing lean meats with less than 10 percent fat.

3. Select whole grains

You may also want to check the food labels of some cookies, crackers and chips. Many of these snacks — even those labeled “reduced fat” — may be made with oils containing trans fats. One clue that a food has some trans fat in it is the phrase “partially hydrogenated” in the ingredient list.

1. Control your portion size How much you eat is just as important as what you eat. Overloading your plate, taking seconds and eating until you feel stuffed can lead to eating more calories, fat and cholesterol than you should. Portions served in restaurants are often more than anyone needs.

Keep track of the number of servings you eat — and use proper serving sizes — to help control your portions. Eating more of low-calorie, nutrientrich foods, such as fruits and vegetables, and less of high-calorie, highsodium foods, such as refined, processed or fast foods, can shape up your diet as well as your heart and waistline.

2. Eat more vegetables and fruits Vegetables and fruits are good sources of vitamins and minerals. Vegetables and fruits are also low in calories and rich in dietary fiber. Vegetables and fruits contain substances found in plants that may help prevent cardiovascular disease.

Eating more fruits and vegetables may help you eat less high-fat foods, such as meat, cheese and snack foods.

Featuring vegetables and fruits in your diet can be easy. Keep vegetables washed and cut in your refrigerator for quick snacks. Keep fruit in a bowl in your kitchen so that you’ll remember to eat it. Choose recipes that have vegetables or fruits as the main ingredient, such as vegetable stir-fry or fresh fruit mixed into salads.

Whole grains are good sources of fiber and other nutrients that play a role in regulating blood pressure and heart h e a l t h . Yo u c a n increase the amount of whole grains in a heart-healthy diet by making simple substitutions for refined grain products. If you are making fufu, use fresh plantains rather than the possessed plantain flour which has no fiber. Similarly the possessed potato flour has no fiber and gives no nutrients. Examples of high fiber products include:Whole-wheat flour, Whole-wheat flour Whole-grain bread, preferably 100% whole-wheat bread or 100% whole-grain bread ,High-fiber cereal with 5 g or more of fiber in a serving, Whole grains such as brown rice, barley and buckwheat (kasha), Whole-grain pasta and Oatmeal (steel-cut or regular).

4. Limit unhealthy fats and cholesterol Limiting how much saturated and trans fats you eat is an important step to reduce your blood cholesterol and lower your risk of coronary artery disease. A high blood cholesterol level can lead to a buildup of plaques in your arteries, called atherosclerosis, which can increase your risk of heart attack and stroke.

The best way to reduce saturated and trans fats in your diet is to limit the amount of solid fats — butter, margarine and shortening — you add to food when cooking and serving. You can also reduce the amount of

When you do use fats, choose monounsaturated fats, such as olive oil or canola oil.

Polyunsaturated fats, found in nuts and seeds, also are good choices for a heart-healthy diet.

When used in place of saturated fat, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats may help lower your total blood cholesterol.

But moderation is essential. All types of fat are high in calories.

Some good choices include:Olive oil, Canola oil, Margarine that’s free of trans fats and Cholesterollowering margarine, such as Benecol, Promise Activ or Smart Balance

5. Choose low-fat protein sources Lean meat, poultry and fish, low-fat dairy products, and egg whites or egg substitutes are some of your best sources of protein. But be careful to choose lower fat options, such as skim milk rather than whole milk and skinless chicken breasts rather than fried chicken.

Fish is another good alternative to high-fat meats. And certain types of fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which can lower blood fats called triglycerides. You’ll find the highest amounts of omega-3 fatty acids in cold-water fish, such as salmon, mackerel and herring. Other sources are flaxseed, walnuts, soybeans and canola oil.

Legumes — beans, peas and lentils — also are good sources of protein and contain less fat and no cholesterol, making them good substitutes for meat. Substituting

plant protein for animal protein — for example, a soy or bean burger for a hamburger — will reduce your fat and cholesterol intake.

6. Reduce the sodium in your food Eating a lot of sodium can contribute to high blood pressure, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Reducing sodium is an important part of a heart-healthy diet. The Department of Agriculture recommends: •

Healthy adults have no more than 2,300 milligrams (mg) of sodium a day (about a teaspoon)

People age 51 or older, African-Americans, and people who have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease have no more than 1,500 mg of sodium a day

for ones with reduced sodium. Be wary of foods that claim to be lower in sodium because they are seasoned with sea salt instead of regular table salt — sea salt has the same nutritional value as regular salt.

Although reducing the amount of salt you add to food at the table or while cooking is a good first step, much of the salt you eat comes from canned or processed foods, such as soups and frozen dinners.

Eating fresh foods and making your own soups and stews can reduce the amount of salt you eat. If you like the convenience of canned soups and prepared meals, look

Coffee: Does it offer health benefits?

Coffee has a long history of being blamed for many ills — from the humorous, “It will stunt your growth” to the notso-humorous claim that it causes heart disease and cancer. But some recent research indicates that coffee may not be so bad after all. So which is it — good or bad for your health? The best answer may be: It doesn’t seem to hurt and it may help, but it probably all depends on how much.

The latest research has not only confirmed that moderate coffee consumption doesn’t cause harm, it’s also uncovered possible benefits. Studies show that the risk for type 2 diabetes is lower among regular coffee drinkers than among those who don’t drink it. Also, coffee may reduce the risk of developing gallstones, discourage the development of colon cancer, improve cognitive function, reduce the risk of liver damage in people at high risk for liver disease, and reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease. Coffee has also been shown to improve endurance performance in long-duration physical activities.

For those who drink coffee to stay alert, new research suggests that you’ll stay more alert, particularly if you are fighting sleep deprivation, if you spread your coffee consumption over the course of the day. For

instance, if you usually drink 16 ounces in the morning, try consuming a 2-3 ounce serving every hour or so. Again, moderation is the key.

However, other evidence indicates that coffee is not completely innocent.

Caffeine, coffee’s main ingredient is a mild addictive stimulant. And coffee does have modest cardiovascular effects such as increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and occasional irregular heartbeat that should be considered.

Studies have been largely inconclusive regarding coffee and its effect on women’s health issues such as breast health, cancer, and osteoporosis.

But, the negative effects of coffee tend to emerge in excessive drinking so it is best to avoid heavy consumption.

O n e l a rg e s t u d y o f 128,000 men and women showed no increase in the risk of heart disease from drinking filtered coffee. The findings — which will published in May , 2006, in the journal “Circulation” — indicated that it didn’t matter how much coffee participants drank.

But another study of 4,000 coffee drinkers published in March 2006 in the “Journal of the American Medical Association” found that two or more cups of coffee a day can increase the risk of heart disease in people with a

specific genetic mutation that slows the breakdown of caffeine in the body.

Several older studies have shown conflicting results.

The design of a study can have some effect on the interpretation of results, which may be another reason for the different conclusions.

Given the large number of participants in the study that showed no risk, it would be reasonable to conclude that coffee poses little or no threat to cardiovascular health.

However, this is not to say that you should disregard the old maxim, “Everything in moderation.” Although coffee may not be harmful, other beverages such as milk and juice contain important nutrients that coffee does not.

As noted above, some evidence suggests that drinking coffee may protect against type 2 diabetes and colon cancer but clearly nobody will advocate coffee consumption for that purpose, there is much more evidence of a protective effect from fruits, vegetables and whole grains than from coffee. So enjoy your coffee as part of a healthy diet that includes a wide variety of foods.

OTTAWA -- A wave of job creation last month knocked the unemployment rate down to 5.9 per cent -- its lowest level in nearly a decade.

Statistics Canada said Friday that the economy churned out another 79,500 net new jobs in November and drove the jobless rate down 0.4 percentage points from 6.3 per cent the month before.

The federal statistical agency also released fresh figures Friday for growth -- they showed that the economy expanded at an annual pace of 1.7 per cent in the third quarter.

But the strong November jobs numbers stood out. The last time the unemployment rate was 5.9 per cent was February 2008 at the start of the global financial crisis.

Economists had expected an increase of 10,000 jobs and the unemployment rate to come in at 6.2 per cent, according to Thomson Reuters.

The increase also marked Canada’s 12th straight month of positive job creation as the country posted its best 12-month performance in 10 years. The last 12-month streak of positive job creation ended in March 2007.

The report said employment rose 2.1 per cent in the 12 months leading up to November as the economy added 390,000 net jobs -- with all the gains driven by full-time work.

The labour market added 441,400 full-time positions year-overyear for an increase of three per cent and its strongest 12-month period of full-time job creation in 18 years.

The numbers show that Canada gained 29,600 full-time jobs and 49,900 part-time positions in November. The growth was concentrated in the private sector, which added 72,400 jobs last month, compared with an increase of 10,600 positions in the public sector.

The report also found a gain of 83,000 employee jobs, compared with a drop in 3,500 selfemployed positions, which is a category that includes people who work in a family business without pay.

The number of factory jobs rose 37,400 last month, while the

services sector added 42,100 positions.

The November survey also found that, compared with the year before, average hourly wages grew 2.8 per cent for the biggest increase since April 2016. Wage growth has climbed since it bottomed out in April 2017 at 0.7 per cent, which marked its lowest level on record.

Statistics Canada also released its latest data Friday for quarterly economic growth.

The economy expanded at an annualized rate of 1.7 per cent in the third quarter of 2017 as weaker exports applied downward pressure on growth.

Economists had expected growth in the third quarter to come in at an annualized rate of 1.6 per cent, according to Thomson Reuters.

The report said the increase in real gross domestic product was driven by a one per cent expansion in household spending.

Exports, however, fell on a quarter-over-quarter basis of 2.7 per cent, which included a 3.4 per cent decline in goods exports that followed three quarters of growth.

Statistics Canada also made a downward revision to Canada’s real GDP number for the second quarter -- dropping it down to an annualized pace of 4.3 per cent compared with its initial reading of 4.5 per cent.

The third-quarter number was a little weaker than the Bank of Canada’s October forecast, which predicted real GDP to ring in at 1.8 per cent. The bank is projecting real GDP to expand by 2.5 per cent in the fourth quarter.

The latest real GDP figure follows four-consecutive quarters of stronger growth -- 4.3 per cent, 2.2 per cent, 3.7 per cent and 4.3 per cent.

The third-quarter report also said investment in residential structures fell for a secondstraight quarter -- the first time since early 2013 that the category saw a decrease in two straight quarters.

The data found the compensation of employees increased 1.3 per cent in nominal terms for its strongest quarterly growth in three years. The Canadian Press

Let’s Talk More About Drug Abuse In Our Schools Now cont’d from pg. 43 prevent their child’s drug usage: 1) Get to know your child’s friends and their parents.

2) Counteract peer influence with parental influence by reinforcing your no-alcohol/nodrug-use rules and expectations.

3) Continue to spend private time with your child to discuss what your child feels and fears.

4) Plan strategies to limit your teen’s unsupervised hours at home, while you are at work.

5) Talk to your kids about joining a sports, drama, arts, or dance clubs or volunteering to work for a church group or community organization.

The busier your teenager is; the less likely he or she is to be bored and to seek an outlet in alcohol or other drugs.

6) Make sure your teen has access to up-to-date information on alcohol and other drugs and their dangerous effects.

7) Talk with your teenager about the future .Discuss your expectations and your teenager’s ambitions and, plan family outing to local colleges and universities.

HOW DO YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD IS

USING ALCOHOL OR OTHER DRUGS? Young people use drugs for many reasons that have to do with how they feel about themselves, how they get along with others, and how they live.

No one factor determines who will use drugs and who will not, but here are some predictors: a) Low grade or poor school performances. b) Aggressive, rebellion behavior. c) Excessive influence by peers. d) Lack of parental support and guidance. e) Behavior problems at an early age. f) Sudden change of friends. g) When the child seems withdrawn, depressed, tired, and careless about personal grooming. h) Sudden lost of interest in hobbies, sports, and other favorite activities.

I) The Possession of drug paraphernalia like pipe, rolling papers, small medicine bottles, eye drops, or butane lighters can signal drug abuse behavior.

The Role of schools: A serious and comprehensive ‘Drug abuse education’ program should form a major part of our school curriculum (from elementary to SHS).

There is a need to ask these questions if we really want to prevent drug abuse in our schools: Are the faculty members trained to teach about alcohol and other drugs use? Is drug education a regular part of the curriculum or limited to special week? Is it taught through the health class or do all teachers incorporate drug education into their subject area. Do children in every grade receive drug education, or is it limited to selected grades?

Is there a component for parents?

Schools should also develop strong policies that spell out rules governing the use, possession, and sale of alcohol and other drugs.

Good school policies typically specify what constitutes an alcohol or other drug offense, spell out the consequences for violating the policy, describe procedures for handling violations, and build community support for the policy.

The role of society and government: It’s nice to have free SHS and national health insurance coverage, but they are not enough. A “healthy” or “vibrant” nation is a nation that has a complete physical, mental and social balance and, not

merely the absence of diseases or infirmity.

To protect the citizenry, there is a need to implement public policies that provide information on the serious effects of the consumption of any medically unprescribed drug. We also have to stop glorifying alcoholic drinks through our advertisement on the airwaves.

imaginations.

Show me a hopeless and hapless society and I will show you a nation full of youth that is prone to anger, diseases, selfdestruction, drug use and less respect for life.

Hopeless and pessimistic people can’t love and be loved. Hopeless people live on borrowed time, and can easily drug themselves to death.

When marijuana usage or dependency (smoking and drinking it) has become a new trend among our teenagers in our towns, villages and neighborhoods we can’t no more deny that

drug abuse in Ghana has reached its zenith.

Yes, some people will continue to use drugs regardless of what we say or do, therefore, all we can do as a society is to identify some commonly abused drugs, their possible effects, how they’re used, and their characteristics. By so doing maybe (just maybe) we will be able to protect the young ones from this epidemic.

Poverty does not directly cause crime if it did - Emmanuel Ayiku By: Staff Reporter, Toronto

Emmanuel Ayiku, Guest speaker Contributing to a symposium organized by African Canadian Social Development Council on Youth and Violence on Saturday November 4th 2017 at Gambian Community Centre Emmanuel Ayiku, Publisher of The Ghanaian News outlined some of the issues confronting our young people today. He debunked the notion that poverty is the main cause of violence among the youth in our society. He said, it takes a certain desperation for a young person to walk our streets with a gun to engage in any form of violence. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Violence, and the danger arises from the

impulsiveness of the youth and lack of foresight with which they often actâ&#x20AC;?, he said. He examined some of the pressures the youth face in our society today which forms part of the root causes of the violence some of them often engages in.

He said frustration leads to aggression, that a young frustrated person who thinks, sometimes wrongly, that there is no other avenue for redress is likely to be aggressive in their reactions to that frustrating act.

The unfortunate and often tragic reality is that it often takes very little provocation to trigger that violence. This, in most cases puts other youth in danger, because it creates a reality in which violence becomes unpredictable - unpredictable in location, unpredictable in cause and unpredictable in consequences. In the face of this, society has a responsibility to address some of the issues that create frustration and sense of alienation in the youth. Some of the youth also fall

prey to the growing environment of competition and comparisons among the youth, negative exposures and peer pressure. Other issues which society needs to take a critical look at is the large army of unemployed youth who provide substantial discontent that can be easily mobilized. Such discontent once mobilized could endanger a family, community and national security. The question is, how can the discontent be mobilized and by who, that is by peer-topeer, by gangs, or terrorists.

Mr. Ayiku suggested an all-out and wholistic approach to dealing with the issues: There should be the parental/ guardian role, community role and institutional/local government role. They all need to work together in an opendialogue fashion to elicit solutions.

The new executives took over from the outgoing executives led by Mr. Dickson Obeng who is now enstooled as the Akwamuhene of the Kwahu Traditional Area and the chief of Kwahu Akwasihu, in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

The new chairman is Mr. Stephen Asante Adjekumhene of the Sankofa Radio 101.3FM Toronto. The other executives sworn in to help Chairman Adjekumhene steer the affairs of the association are :Sampson OduroBoadu ( Vicechairman), Wislon Akuamoah Boateng ( Secretary), Akua Obeng Frempomaa (Assistant Secretary), Betty Obeng ( PRO), Michael Osei (Treasurer), Seth Obeng Adjei (Financial Secretary)Jeffery Osei Bonsu (Special Duties).

The Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Daniel Owusu charged the new executives to use the office to unite the association and live by the oath that they have sworn in order to raise the standard of the association. The new chairman in his response thanked the members for their trust in the new executives and promised to work diligently to attract new members with emphasis on the youth, and also to promote the welfare of the entire members without prejuidice.

Retirement Service in honour of Deaconess Rosemond Effah-Adjei

By Jonathan Baah Annobil, Toronto The McKeown Worship Centre 2256 Sheppard Avenue W., North York was the venue of the retirement service in honour of Deaconess Rosemond Effah-Adjei on Sunday October 29, 2017. The officiating ministers were Apostle Daniel Nii Lomotey Engman (Area Head Scarborough) Pastor Joseph Fynn-Sackey (PIWC District) and Pastor McKeown Quainoo (Host Pastor).

She was ordained as a deaconess in 1990 and was among the few that started Church of Pentecost in Canada.

She was given a plaque and a gift for the service rendered to the church. On Saturday October 28 a befitting birthday bash was organized for Deaconess Rosemond on her 65th birthday.

400g - Rice 200g - Onions 2 tbsp - Powdered Shrimps 400g - Fresh Tomatoes (Blend) 1/4 ltr. - Cooking Oil 1 ltr. - Water 200g - Tomato Puree 2 Stock Cube 1 tbsp Powdered Pepper 1/2 tbsp Mix Spice 1 tbsp Mill Ginger/Garlic Salt to taste

4-6 medium - Riped Plantain 1 tbsp - Cayenne pepper 1 tbsp ground - Pepper corn, ginger and cloves 1 tbsp - Mix spices, Salt to taste

METHOD: 1. Wash plantain, peel and dice 2. Add mill spices and salt 3. Correct the seasoning and deep fry till golden brown 4. Serve hot with roasted groundnut as a snack or as a side dish.

TURKEY STUFFING METHOD: 1. Prepare tomato gravy with cooking oil by adding chopped onions, tomato puree and shrimps powder.

2. Add mill ginger and garlic with all dry ingredients 3. Cover to cook for 5 minutes 4. Add water to the gravy and leave to boil 5. Add rice, stir and correct the seasoning and cover to cook for 15 minutes.

ACCOMPANIMENT: a. Grilled Chicken, Meat or Fish gravy b. Boiled vegetable or salad

ROASTED TURKEY

INGREDIENTS 1/4 cup (60 mL) butter 1 onion, chopped 2 celery stalks, chopped 4 cloves garlic, roughly chopped 1/4 cup (60 mL) fresh sage, finely chopped 1 tsp (5 mL) dried thyme leaves 1/2 tsp (3 mL) salt and freshly ground pepper (each) 12 cup (3 L) cubed day old crusty bread, about 3/4-inch (2 cm) pieces 3 large eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 cup (125 mL) fresh parsley, chopped 2 cups (500 mL) CAMPBELL'S® Ready to Use Chicken Broth DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Melt butter in a large skillet set over medium heat. Add onion, celery, garlic, sage, thyme, salt and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, for 7 minutes or until vegetables are softened. Cool slightly.

2. Toss vegetable mixture with bread, eggs and parsley. Stir in broth gradually until well combined. Transfer to a buttered 9x13-inch (3 L) casserole dish.

3. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until set in the center and golden on top.

Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

TURKEY GRAVY Ingredients 1 (18 pounds) whole turkey 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 1/2 quarts turkey stock 8 cups prepared stuffing 1.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Place rack in the lowest position of the oven.

Remove the turkey neck and giblets, rinse the turkey, and pat dry with paper towels. Place the turkey, breast side up, on a rack in the roasting pan. Loosely fill the body cavity with stuffing. Rub the skin with the softened butter, and season with salt and pepper. Position an aluminum foil tent over the turkey.

3.

Place turkey in the oven, and pour 2 cups turkey stock into the bottom of the roasting pan. Baste all over every 30 minutes with the juices on the bottom of the pan. Whenever the drippings evaporate, add stock to moisten them, about 1 to 2 cups at a time. Remove aluminum foil after 2 1/2 hours. Roast until a meat thermometer inserted in the meaty part of the thigh reads 180 degrees F (80 degrees C), about 4 hours.

Transfer the turkey to a large serving platter, and let it stand for at least 20 to 30 minutes before carving.

Pan Gravy: 8. 1 carton CAMPBELL'S STOCK FIRST™ Chicken Stock OR Campbell's® Ready to Use Chicken Broth 9. 1/4 cup (60 mL) all-purpose flour Directions 1. Mix stock or broth with lemon juice, basil, thyme and black pepper to create basting mixture.

2. Roast turkey according to package directions (until internal temperature of turkey reaches 180°F / 82°C), basting occasionally with basting mixture.

3. Once cooked, remove turkey from roasting pan and let turkey stand for 10 minutes before slicing.

4.Pour drippings into a saucepan– skim off fat leaving around ½ cup of drippings.

5.Add remaining stock or broth mixture and flour to drippings in saucepan.

6.Heat until mixture boils and thickens, stirring often. Serve with sliced turkey.

Satellite images show extent of air pollution worldwide BERLIN -- Images taken by a new European satellite show the levels and distribution of air pollutants around the world, including ash spewing from a volcano in Indonesia.

The European Space Agency released images Friday made by its Sentinel-5P satellite that show high concentrations of nitrogen dioxide in parts of Europe on Nov. 22.

Nitrogen dioxide is mainly caused by vehicle emissions and in industrial processes.

Another image shows high levels of carbon monoxide, commonly produce by fires, in Asia, Africa and South America.

A series of images also show sulfur dioxide, ash and smoke from the Mount Agung volcano in Bali last month.

Sentinel-5P, launched Oct. 13, can map levels of nitrogen dioxide, methane, carbon monoxide and other pollutants that can be hazardous to human health or contribute to global warming. The Associated Press

‘Open banking’ holds promise but cybersecurity fears loom for Canadian banks Armina Ligaya, The Canadian Press

TORONTO - As banks work to fortify their cybersecurity defences amidst a growing number of data breaches, they are also exploring the promise of socalled “open banking,” a concept that could finally disrupt the staid financial services industry.

Customers have increasingly moved away from physical branches towards online and mobile apps, but banking has yet to reach its “Uberization” moment, one that breaks down traditional models to usher in new innovations, as Uber has done for the taxi industry.

Open banking - granting third-parties like financial technology startups access to bank data to develop innovative apps - could be such a “game changer,” according to Toronto Dominion Bank’s chief information officer, Jeff Henderson.

All but one of 100 payment executives at major banks globally said they were planning major investments in open banking by 2020, according to an online survey by consulting firm Accenture released last month.

But even as Canadian financial institutions toy with the idea, they’re concerned about the looming risk to consumers’ personal information amid the growing threat of cyberattacks.

The Accenture survey also showed that 50 per cent of respondents said that implementing the emerging concept increases risk.

“There’s no question this is a trend,” TD’s Henderson said. “(But) I want to make sure that any time we exchange information externally, that is done so in a very controlled and understood manner.”

In these early days, the exact nature of the innovation in the open banking landscape is unclear, said Bob Vokes, managing director of financial services at Accenture in Canada.

“What we’re trying to do in open banking is to create new sets of services off of the banking data, or alternatively, allow you to manipulate your banking information in a different way,” he said.

Open banking allows consumers to share their banking data, which proponents say will spur the creation of new apps and platforms that will make financial transactions easier or develop new use cases.

For example, a consumer could log into one app and see all their financial accounts, from various banks, to get a full picture of their net worth and move funds in real time. Or, geolocation data could be layered over payment data, allowing a consumer to analyze exactly where their money is being spent, while also allowing merchants to offer them location-based rewards.

The buzz around open banking is building just as concerns about cybersecurity mount.

“Canadian banks have devoted very significant resources to creating wellestablished information security and data warehouses that meet the highest standards worldwide, the CBA said.

Meanwhile, various jurisdictions are pushing ahead with legislation that would see financial institutions become even more interconnected.

“Any initiative that could undermine this trust would be very problematic for Canadian consumers, financial market participants and the broader economy.”

By January 2018, banks in Europe will be required to share proprietary data, in a regulated and secure way, under the U.K.’s Open Banking Standard and Europe’s PSD2 legislations.

Vokes says these concerns - as well as questions about whether the bank or the third party is liable if something goes awry - will need to be addressed in legislation.

Canadian institutions are also jumping on board.

If additional layers of security protection are put in place, open banking should not raise the level of cybersecurity risk, he said, adding however, that cyberattackers are becoming more sophisticated as well.

The Competition Bureau said in a report on fintech earlier this month that it is early days “but the potential impact on competition and innovation is promising.”

The Ministry of Finance said in August it is “examining the merits of open banking.”

Bringing the Gospel to our Community by Rev. Isaac DeGraft Takyi The Christian, from Monday to Saturday: Part Three: “Christian who is living by the power of the Holy Spirit” For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father” (Rom 8:14-16).

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit. (1 Cor 12:7-9).

For the last few months we have been following Ed Silvoso in his book Anointed for Businesswhere he prescribes for the body of Christ, the four types of Christians in the workplace. We have looked at the “Christian who is simply trying to survive”,the “Christian who is living by Christian principles” and this month we will look at,the“Christian who is living by the power of the Holy Spirit”. We will try to answer the question,“What are the characteristics of such a Christian?”and illustrate it with three stories.

Around the Ghana Sports Scene Accra and Cape Coast to host 2018 Africa Women’s Championship The Accra and Cape Coast Sports stadia will host next y e a r ’s A f r i c a Wo m e n ’s Championship in Ghana.

The local organizing committee (LOC) has selected the two arenas for the competition which will be played in November 2018.

The committee on Tuesday began inspection of the two venues to host the competition.

The Accra Sports Stadium is currently under slight renovation following the patchy state of the edifice.

Cape Coast unlike Accra is in good condition after it

recently hosted the WAFU Cup of Nations tournament.

Meanwhile the Kumasi Babayara Sports Stadium have been selected as an alternative for the Accra Sports Stadium.

CAF’s inspection team will arrive in Ghana in the coming weeks to assess the progress in preparation for the tournament.

Ghana for the first time will be hosting the Africa Women’s Championship since its inception in 1999.

No nationality switch for Bissah – MoYS The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) is determined to mediate the impasse between former Youth Olympics gold medalist Martha Bissah and the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA).

According to Deputy Minister, Pius Hadzide, the ministry will find an amicable solution in a bid to preventing Bissah from switching nationalities.

Bissah, who is now based in the USA, cannot represent Ghana at any event as she is serving an indefinite suspension after failing to substantiate bribery allegations levelled against executives last year.

This has led to fears the budding talent will be lured to switch her nationality.

The Deputy Minister told Joy Sports it was unfortunate that the issue had been allowed to drag, but insisted everything possible will be done to get Bissah to compete for the country.

“The impasse between Bissah and Ghana Athletics Association have come to the attention of the ministry and we are taking steps to ensure that we are able to get a peaceful resolution to the matter and to ensure that Martha Bissah continues to play her role as a

“I have met the Ghana Athletics Association executives and they are cooperative and quiet understanding.”

Entrepreneurial Development.

The Organization, she said, is interested in providing vital health support and have donated medical equipment and supplies to some medical institutions and are in the process of supplying pregnant women in rural areas with birth kits to prevent child and maternal mortality. With education, SEHP has embarked on a School Library in a Box project, providing books to schools in rural areas which do not have static libraries.

This is to help improve reading skills and the overall quality of education that our children

get to make them global competitors. Through the women empowerment initiative of the project, they intend to support women financially and implement economic development programs to facilitate self-sufficiency and break the cycle of poverty.
