Traditional Leaders in Ghana embroiled in unfortunate political issues Elsewhere in this issue, our astute columnist examines a hot political issue currently raging in Ghana over attempts by the government to conduct elections to amend a section of the Ghanaian Constitution to allow local government officials to be elected with the participation of political parties in the country. The issue has recently generated heated national debate since the main opposition political party, the NDC announced its strong opposition to the national exercise. Since then, there have been mixed reactions to the issue, both for and against.

The same Ghanaian Constitution also bars our Traditional rulers from engaging in active politics in the country. Traditional rulers, many of whom are well respected and held in very high esteem in the country, also vote in national elections, although they do not, in most cases, show public preferences to any political group for fear of tarnishing their expected neutrality in national and local politics. There have been some cases where some traditional rulers have, for personal gains and interests, aligned themselves unfortunately with some political leaders, groupings or issues at some points in Ghana’s history. The effects have not been very good for the stability of the nation and of the local areas where these traditional rulers hail from. By and large, many of our Chiefs, the Ghanaian traditional rulers, have maintained some level or semblance of neutrality in local and national politics since they are seen as the ultimate arbiters when crisis or disputes arise.

The above stance and expected neutrality of our traditional leaders have been rudely jolted over the past two weeks around some very critical national issue: the forthcoming referendum on amending a section of the Ghanaian Constitution to allow partisan political groupings’ involvement in electing local government officials: MMCEs, MCEs, DCEs and Assembly members. Quite contrary to the expected neutrality of our traditional leaders on critical national political issues, the current President of the National House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede XIV and his Vice President, Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII from the Central Region, issued a strongly-worded public statement voicing the “strong opposition” of the National House of Chiefs, supposedly representing all the Heads of the Traditional rulers in the country, to the forth-coming national referendum. They urged people to vote “No” in the referendum.

The reaction to this public statement from the two heads of the national traditional outfit was swift and brutal: a chief from the Western Region who is described as the Head of the Governance Committee of the National House of Chiefs, as well as the Head of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, the Okyehene, also issued strongly-worded statements denouncing the public statement issued by the two leaders. They claimed that no such decision as announced by the two top leaders of the national House of Chiefs had been agreed upon. That led to a counter accusation by Togbe Afede XIV describing the stance of the other Chiefs as “dishonest”…an unfortunate characterization on the integrity of our respected and revered traditional rulers.

Just as is currently happening on the national scene among the political parties, our traditional rulers are also divided, and their moral authority eroded due to issues of their own making: intrusion into politics by traditional rulers which the national constitution abhors.

The accusations and counter accusations among our Chiefs are continuing. We strongly appeal to them to cease fire, and reflect on the potential damaging effect these public spats among them will cause to our very revered and respected institution, the bed-rock of our Ghanaian society.

The Claireport Place’s Banquet and Convention Center on 65 Claireport Crescent, Etobicoke Toronto was the scene of a night of celebration of excellence. It was on Sunday November 17, 2019 and the 19th edition of the GhanaianCanadian Achievement Awards recorded 32 deserving members and two friends of the Ghanaian-Canadian community as honorees.

The hall was packed to capacity with nearly 400 celebrants for the glamorous celebration of excellence for their impact on the Ghanaian community in Canada, our motherland-Ghana and the Canadian society as a whole.

After the rendition of both national anthems of Canada and Ghana by Page Kyere a recipient and her sister Ava from Hamilton, Emmanuel Ayiku, the Publisher/ Editor of the Ghanaian News (organizers of the event) in his remarks welcomed all and sundry to the event. He said that the organizers felt very honored to have at the function not just many good and long-lasting partners and associates but also new friends

who had come to grace the special occasion. He added, “the recipients have demonstrated a commitment to excellence that serves a wonderful example for all Canadians and especially GhanaianCanadians.”

On behalf of the Ghanaian News, he extended his sincere gratitude to the Awards Planning and Selection Committee as well as all sponsors without whose contributions, the event would have been impossible to organize.

Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine, Mr. Alexander BenAcquaah, Minister Counselor Admin, Ghana Consulate who represented Ghana Consul General Thomas Seshie were among the VIPs that graced the occasion.

The keynote speaker was Jojo Chintoh, who graduated with Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967 at Cape Coast University Ghana and worked at the Ghana broadcasting Corporation TV Division as Producer/Director before coming to Canada in 1969. He worked as an intern at the Toronto Star in 1972 and other places before landing at City TV News from 1977 to 2008. A renowned journalist, who is now a freelance Documentary Filmmaker who was the recipient of the Media Award in the 2nd Edition of the GhanaianCanadian Achievement Awards in 2000.

Jojo Chintoh spoke on the acquisition of the Heritage Centre for the community and called on the community members to contribute more by giving part of the tithes

they pay to churches to support building the Heritage Center.

He also spoke on the punctuality of Ghanaians to functions. “We have to be punctual at events which doesn’t bode well for us as a community,” he admonished the gathering.

Jojo also expounded on the need to help our youth to succeed since they are our future leaders. (He was given a standing ovation after his speech).

The Special Awards of the night went to Charles Nimmo Ntiamoah Mensah (Mr. CNN) and Stacey Amewoyi.

In the Professional Excellence category Professor Joseph Kwabena Appiah currently an Engineering Professor at both George Brown and Durham Colleges, Dr. Caleb Acquah, Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ottawa, Edigna Kusi Appiah, Nurse Practitioner with a focus on Pediatrics and a Clinical Course Director, Dr. Charles Sagoe, a technology and information consultant with extensive international experience in research, academic and technology development, and Lawrence Opoku, the Services Executive for Hewlett Packard Enterprise Canada were recognized.

An Ontario Superior Court judge has reinstated Jim Karygiannis as councillor for Scarborough-Agincourt “I’m happy to be returning to work to look after my constituents, respond to their needs and continue the work that we’ve been doing so far in ScarboroughAgincourt,” Karygiannis said.

In a ruling released on Monday, Justice William Chalmers said he has granted Karygiannis “relief from the forfeiture of the office” but the order does not stop the city’s compliance audit committee from continuing with an audit of his election expenses or prevent it from proceeding with legal action.

“I want to thank the people that reached out to me during this time and especially the strength of my family. Tomorrow is another day and tomorrow we start back at work.”

“I find that Mr. Karygiannis acted in good faith with respect to the filing of the financial statements,” Chalmers said in the ruling.

Chalmers said there was “no attempt” by Karygiannis to hide a big dinner expense that sparked the controversy surrounding his election expenses.

The judge noted that the “relief” is granted only while an audit proceeds, and given that a decision

Councillor Jim Karygiannis still needs to be made following that audit, it would be “unfair” for Karygiannis to be subjected to “extreme punishment” of leaving office.

He repeated his position that there was an “error in filing.”

Brad Ross, spokesperson for the city, said arrangements are being made to allow Karygiannis to attend council’s regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday as councillor for Ward 22.

Councillor removed from office in early November

City Clerk Ulli Watkiss served noticed to Karygiannis in early November that he was no longer the councillor for Ward 22 over an alleged expense violation, specifically a supplementary financial statement he filed for the municipal election last year.

Karygiannis was told he was in default of the Municipal Elections Act, which requires every candidate to file a financial statement for the election, and disqualified from being elected or appointed to any office until after the 2022 municipal election.

Under the provincial act, there is a limit on the amount of money candidates can spend in an election. For Ward 22 last year, that total was $61,207.95, with a maximum of 10 per cent — or $6,120.80 — to be spent for “parties and other expressions of appreciation” after voting day.

Watkiss had said Karygiannis filed expenses under “parties and other expressions of appreciation” showing that he spent $32,083.50, which exceeds the expense limit by $25,962.70.

She had said she had no “latitude or discretion” on the matter, and “forfeiture of the office” was automatic if a financial statement showed expenses for “parties and other expressions of appreciation” after voting day exceed the amount permitted.

Karygiannis could still face punishment, judge notes In the ruling, Chalmers notes that penalties contained in the Municipal Elections Act don’t apply if a judge were to find that a candidate committed an offence inadvertently, or because of an error in judgment, while “acting in good faith.”

Chalmers added that following the audit, there are several different possible outcomes. Karygiannis might not be charged under the Municipal Elections Act; he could be charged but not convicted, or charged and convicted. If convicted, he could still face punishment, which includes being kicked out of office.

Adam Challef filed the application for a compliance audit of Karygiannis’s expenses that led to his removal, pointing out Karygiannis raised over $217,000 during the election.

Challef, the City of Toronto and Watkiss are listed as respondents in the case.

“I’m disappointed with this decision and will be reviewing it and my legal options before determining next steps,” Challef said on Monday. CBC News

Most Canadians who switch careers are happier for it, survey finds Nearly nine out of 10 Canadians who have made a career change say they’re happier since switching paths, a new survey has found.

Conducted on behalf of job site Indeed Canada, the research polled 1,023 randomly selected full-time workers from a variety of industries and education levels and found that 38 per cent had made a complete career change at some point.

Another 35 per cent said they were either currently considering switching careers or have contemplated doing so.

Of those respondents who have made a career pivot, 87 per cent said they are happier since making the change.

Eric Norton counts himself among those.

The former Ontario school teacher started a new career as a firefighter for Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services a little over a year ago.

“I’m extremely happy,” said Norton, 40. “I don’t want to say I’m made for this job, but this job really suits me.”

Although he’s quick to say that there was a lot that he liked about his eight years teaching mostly high school science for the York Region District School Board and the six he spent as an elementary teacher before that, over time he “started to lose steam.”

Norton said the parts he didn’t like about the job — things like the paperwork associated with preparing and submitting lessons plans — started to eclipse the things he enjoyed and was good at, like interacting with the students.

He took a year of leave after his third child was born, hoping to become re-energized and “go back to work in the fall like a brand-new teacher.”

Instead, at the end of his first day back, he told his wife, “I don’t think I can do this for 20 more years.”

In high school Norton hadn’t been clear on what kind of career he wanted, so he followed in his mother’s footsteps, attending teacher’s college after completing an undergrad degree.

Norton said his career change wasn’t inspired by a childhood fascination with fire trucks, but instead came as a suggestion from his wife.

“She’d been talking to a mutual friend of ours whose husband became a firefighter in late 30s,” said Norton. “She thought that I would be good at the job. I had never even considered it before.”

Old skills, new challenges After a conversation with that man, Norton decided to work toward the first requirement for becoming a firefighter — getting in really good physical shape. He started to take his “dad bod” to the gym a lot more and to run sprints outside.

He used a meditation app to help with the mental focus he’d need to keep going even when his body told him to quit during the

physical tests that awaited him. Because swimming exhausts Norton quickly, he did a lot of pool workouts to task his cardiovascular system in preparation for the VO2 max, a notoriously difficult aerobic endurance test that measures the maximum amount of oxygen a person can use during intense exercise.

He completed a one-year firefighting program at Seneca College, and after he passed all the required academic and physical tests, it took about a year of applying to land a job in his new field.

Norton said he’s able use the skills he developed in the classroom in his new job far more often than he expected. He leans on his interpersonal skills in situations like going into people’s home on the crew’s many medical calls — a situation not unlike meeting a student’s parents for the first time.

Canada, notes that the tight labour market means people are more likely to be able to execute career changes if they’re dissatisfied with their work.

In fact, the survey found that 59 per cent of career changers and those who are contemplating a switch say being unhappy in their current role is a driving factor.

Should you stay or should you go?

But few people make career changes on a whim. The survey found 62 per cent of those who switched planned their transitions well in advance, spending an average of 11 months thinking about a move.

“I would just encourage people, if they’re feeling unsettled or unhappy, that they start looking around and going to sites like Indeed.com to explore what’s out there and what do those opportunities look like,” said Kasten, who recommends researching employers in the new industry they’re considering.

The study was conducted by Censuswide, which did an online survey of Canadian Censuswide panellists screened to ensure all are full-time employees. The survey was conducted between Oct. 28 and Nov. 1 and the margin of error is +/- 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

These strengths also come in handy for getting along with new colleagues during 24-hour shifts. “Twenty-four hours is a lot of time to spend with people if you don’t have good communication and interpersonal skills.”

Money talks, but not always The Indeed research found that better pay was the most common reason respondents changed careers, with 63 per cent citing it as their main motivation. But 57 per cent of those who switched said they did so because they wanted more opportunity for growth.

Like Norton, 47 per cent said they enrolled in education and training programs to execute their career transformation.

Because of his long tenure as a teacher, Norton’s job as a firefighter came with a 30 per cent pay cut. But after about 3.5 years, Norton will move up pay grades and match his previous compensation.

Navarre Bailey also took a pay cut with his career change in 2017. After 13 years in corporate marketing roles, Bailey no longer felt good about how he was making a living.

He left that job for the non-profit sector, first working for a mental health organization called Youth Assisting Youth, whose mandate he found meaningful because some people close to him had been through mental health challenges.

FOCUS Season of Peace and Good Will, Not Commercialization!

By Joe Kingsley Eyiah, OCT, Brookview Middle School, Toronto-Canada As we approach December 25, many are feverishly preparing for the season of Christmas (Christ-mas), the supposed day on which our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was born on the planet earth over 2000 years ago. The true origin of Christmas is another thesis to write about!

My question to all (especially, Christians) who celebrate Christmas as an honor to Christ is: Do you truly know Jesus Christ? What many who participate in the festivities associated with Christmas fail to see is the commercialization of the season as its pagan origin rightly invoked-a time for conspicuous consumption and unequaled revelry (see The Buffalo News of Nov. 22, 1984).

I personally do not believe that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was born in December which is snow time in Bethlehem (note that the shepherds could not be out there in the field at that time) yet the birth of Christ if is celebrated almost the world-over whenever with love, joy, giving and peace unto humankind then it is the best time to reflect on the life and work of Christ for the world. However, Christmas is increasingly being defined by shallow materialism, and proliferate spending which, is gradually

overshadowing the lessons associated with why Christ was born to the world.

Though we welcome the traditions and sentiments of “peace and goodwill towards all” that Christmas brings with its season, the love of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, should make us live in peace with ALL people at ALL times. Spending money on or showering gifts on the poor ONLY during Christmas is not Christ-like! The commercial houses and other manufacturers wait on the Christmas season to “exploit” the masses.

The origin of Santa Clause (Bishop St. Nicholas from Santa Claus) was associated with gifts-giving.

Santa Claus has now taken centre stage in the celebration of Christmas at the expense of Jesus Christ whose “supposed birthday” is being remembered the world round! Traders, photographers and some

entertainers always use Santa to commercialize C h r i s t m a s .

Unfortunately, Christmas has now become Santa verses Christ! I was not surprised to watch in the news from United States of America recently how a house owner was driven with frustration of the apparent commercialization of Christmas at the disadvantage of “Christ” to come up with an unusual Christmasdecoration in front of his house to the displeasure of his neighbors and passer-bys.

In his decoration, the man has depicted Jesus Christ with a gun pointing to a fallen Santa inferring that Christ has shot dead Santa. Could this thinking be a reflection of what commercialization is doing to the ‘true meaning’ of Christmas?

When I was a child, Christmas meant a lot to me. Now I care less about Christmas knowing that it has a lot of pagan practices associated with it. Did you know that the Christmas tree was long in existence before Christ was born? And that tree is mentioned in the Bible as the way of the heathen and NOT of God’s children? (Read about it in the Bible from Jeremiah 10 verses 2 to 5). Whatever be your take on Christmas, know that its origin is not Christian and its celebration is Commerce

and not Christ. However, if you are celebrating Christmas as an honor and worship of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ then remember the words of Christ Himself in Revelation 22:12; And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

Lessons of Love, Peace, Joy & Giving The Bible talks about a child who was to be born and that He would deliver mankind from the bondage of sin. That He would be called Prince of Peace, King of Kings- IMMANUEL, meaning ‘God with Us’!

(Luke 2:1-20). ‘For God so love the world that He gave His only begotten son (Christ)….’ The greatest lesson associated with CHRISTmas is LOVE accompanied

by GIVING. Truly, the Christmas season sees a lot of GIVING but is it motivated by LOVE? Unfortunately, many give to show that they

have not because they love. The true story of a blind man and his pet (guide dog for many years) could be cited here as true spirit of love. The blind man had unfortunately slipped unto the train tracks while waiting for the train at a subway station.

His pet and best friend, the dog named ‘Orlando’ spontaneously jumped on top of him when it saw a train approaching. They laid still in the middle of the tracks for the train to pass over them. The blind man sustained few bruises but his friend, Orlando, was not hurt!

While at the hospital, the blind man kept asking about the condition of his pet-friend which, he was to give up for adoption soon because he no longer had enough money to keep it. Such a wonderful friendship was to be broken no sooner than later! However, their ‘unfortunate’ story moved the hearts of many to give over $80,000 to the blind man to retain his friend, Orlando! What a joy!

The season of Christmas is a time of giving and giving brings joy. Where is the joy in some parts of the world as we celebrate Christmas? There is no peace in places like Syria, the new nation of South Sudan and Central African Republic where thousands of human beings including even children who should be singing at this time, ‘joy to the world’ are being massacred!

Unfortunately, the world is constantly sacrificing the lessons of Love, Peace, Joy and Giving associated with the birth of Christ on the altar of commercialization of CHRISTmas. The burning question is: Is it Christmas or ‘Commercemas’? Let’s learn the lessons of love, peace, joy and giving that the birth of Christ teaches us!!

Why you should take notes by hand Most students take a laptop with them to lectures. But are there times when they might be better off taking a pad and pen?

These days many people can type faster than they can write by hand, particularly if they’ve grown up using laptops.

This is a hugely useful skill of course and allows you to take copious notes, quickly and easily, which must surely be a good thing, right?

Maybe not. In an experiment, run by Pam Mueller at Princeton University published in 2014, students were given Ted talks to watch and were told to take notes.

Half were given laptops and half took notes with a pen and paper.

You might expect little difference in the notes, since students are so used to using a keyboard these days. In fact, there was. The students using a keyboard were more likely to type the lecturers’ words

verbatim, while the students writing more slowly by hand had no choice but to engage with the information in order to allow them to summarise. Afterwards the students were given some tricky intelligence tests to distract them, and were then quizzed on the content of the lecture.

When it came to remembering facts, it didn’t matter which method of note-taking they used, but when asked to explain the concepts covered in the lecture, the students who took notes by hand did better.

Verbatim note-taking involves a shallower form of cognitive processing. You can even do it without thinking about the content at all should you choose to.

But when using a pen and paper you process the information more

deeply because you can’t possibly write it all down. The other advantage of using a pen and paper is that you can move around the page very quickly, circling, underlining or adding extra information in the margins.

The team wondered whether it wasn’t the use of a laptop that was the problem, but the fact that the students took verbatim notes. So next they did a similar study, but this time the students were cautioned against taking verbatim notes.

Despite the warning, when the notes were analysed, the laptopusing students still took more verbatim notes and still couldn’t answer the conceptual questions as well as the people taking longhand notes.

Evangelicals Target Ghana In The ‘Year Of Return’

Ghana is a great place to visit and for over two decades, the country has experienced relatively smooth democratic governance, with the vast majority of the diverse Ghanaian population coexisting peacefully.

As Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah opens and pens her thoughts, this year, Ghana is expected to receive a huge boost to the tourism industry and the economy at large as a result of the huge surge in Diaspora visitors for the Year of Return.

This anticipation has been heightened by the number of high-profile celebrities that have visited the country in recent months including British supermodel Naomi Campbell, Anthony Anderson, co-star of the US show Blackish, as well as US TV talk show host Steve Harvey. But below the surface, a sinister threat lurks to Ghana’s democratic and open movement and the worse thing is, it’s being fuelled by far-right evangelists from the U.S.A.

In the past two months, hate speech, sexism and homophobia has been amplified in the country.

Far-right individuals and civil society organisations have seized

on the Government’s efforts to introduce Comprehensive Sex Education in schools, alleging that, educating children about their bodies and sex is a magical portal that will somehow lead to children becoming gay.

The mind boggles. It would be easy to ignore such individuals as ignorant but its extremely dangerous to do so.

Folks such as Moses FohAmoaning, Executive Secretary of the National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values has been one of the most virulent champions of homophobia in Ghana. His organisation works with the World Congress of Families (WCF) headquartered in the United States of America. This is an organisation that has close ties and alliances with numerous far-right, anti-migrant, white supremacist and antiIslam movements across the world as research by the likes of open Democracy, Southern Poverty Law Centre, and AWID has shown.

A significant part of the danger is in how these groups work to influence local politicians. From the 31st of October to the 1st of November 2019, the World Conference of Families (WCF) held its regional conference in Accra. Ahead of the conference, Moses FohAmoaning visited a number of high profile politicians in Ghana including former Presidents John Kufour and John Mahama

(who is also the current Presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress), as well as Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, a former Presidential Candidate.

women have always worked and had access to public spaces. They erase the diversity of African families positioning as superior to a Western idea of family.

These visits were clearly part of an agenda to create a repressive environment for women and LGBTQI people and part of continued efforts to advocate for politicians to pass homophobic laws in Ghana.

This is an agenda that Foh-Amoaning has been pursuing a while. In 2018 he claimed to be working on a bill entitled Comprehensive Solution Based Legislative Framework for Dealing with the Lesbianism Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Phenomenon. The real irony is that whilst on one hand FohAmoaning and his ilk like to peddle the myth that homosexuality is ‘UnAfrican’, they work with neo-colonizers like the WCF whose leadership have openly expressed support and admiration for far rights political leaders in Italy and Hungary who have described African migrants in Europe as ‘slaves’ and ‘poison’.

Sexual minorities are not the only groups that these far-right individuals and organisations target.

They also use religion as a tool to promote a colonial view of women and families, a concept that has never been real within the African context where

norm.

I grew up in a traditional African family environment that Brian Brown and his like are quick to deride as ‘non-human’, and I know from my own lived experiences that there are many ways of creating families, and bringing up children in a loving environment.

The real threat to families comes from these ‘new age missionaries’ who

align themselves with local religious leaders, politicians and even some women’s rights activists.

In the Year of Return, when we are inviting our global African Diaspora home we should ensure that everybody feels welcome. Our Diaspora family come in their beautiful diversities. Our families at home do too, and the Government of Ghana has a duty of care to protect all its citizens from violence and abuse including homophobic hate speech.

The reason is that cognitively processing material more deeply while you listen, helps you both to understand it and to remember it later on. Even if you never refer back to your notes again, the process of creating them can be useful. The exception is with learning simple facts. Then taking notes on a laptop can work just fine.

A more passive way still of keeping track of information from lectures is to record them so you can listen again or re-watch them later. But is there a risk that because you know everything is there for when you need it, you might not concentrate properly? Or does it free you up to concentrate fully on what’s happening because you’re not distracted by trying to take notes?

In an experiment by Bianka Patel at the University of North Carolina, pharmacy students were told that their lecture would be split into two halves.

The first 50-minute section would be videoed, so that they could watch it again later if they wanted to. But the second 50-minute section would not be recorded.

They were tested immediately after the session and a week later to see how much they could recall from each lecture – the one that was recorded allowing them to fully engage with the topic and the non-videoed lecture where they needed to take notes. I wonder which you think would work best?

So whether it’s best to record lectures or not is more or less down to personal preference. But one more thing to consider is that typed notes do have an advantage when it comes to easy storage and searching.

But even though the devices were popular, the students’ performance with and without them wasn’t measured, so we don’t know what difference it made to their marks.

Of course, if you can type fast and you want a transcription, then a laptop is ideal, but if your aim is to understand the material better and not just to create a record of the material, then take notes by hand. And the other lesson from all of this, of course, is to make your notes concise. BBC

Let’s call it like we see it. Ghana is a totally dysfunctional state.

Once we stop denying the reality with thin skinned defensiveness, we will come to an accurate diagnosis and have a decent chance of repairing the damage we have done to our country. We should do this because our youth will have no future and the country will implode if we don’t.

We owe it to so many before us, who toiled honestly and endlessly for the success of this human development enterprise called Ghana.

We have squandered so many proverbial goal chances, the latest being oil, our newest resource. We have also failed to progress beyond simply being an exporter of raw materials.

Who are the captains of industry in Ghana today?

They are the people the government should be consulting with while they contemplate another tango with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF, will recommend what we know we should have done long ago but have not had the political will to do. We must slash the public sector significantly but not as a singular act. This must be accompanied by a real change in fiscal attitude untainted by political imperatives.

The application of controls to minimize losses to corruption coupled with comprehensive and long-term support for entrepreneurially based options for workers in the agricultural, service, IT and other sectors is critical.

Ghanaians need to understand that nothing is free. If sanitation is poor and we now have 3000 plus cholera cases

in Greater Accra, it’s because fundamentally, the numbers do not add up. Sanitation is poor partly because a significant component of our economic activity occurs outside the formal sector so all our revenue projections are false. We will never generate enough funds to keep our cities and municipalities clean and healthy as long as a myriad of adults engaged in constant income generating activities do not pay taxes. If for over five decades we have not devised mechanisms for formalizing most of the economic activity in the nation, then we deserve the filth and all its implications.

Property rates are also too low to support the services required, such as comprehensive waste management including recycling and infrastructural changes such as permanently covering all open drains to prevent flooding and ending endemic malaria and other water borne diseases. These highly preventable conditions still kill our children.

Malaria is a public health problem but its permanent solution lies in the hands of civil engineers.

At the health policy level, if we set and pursue a strategic goal of providing clean water for the whole country, this simple act would transform all our healthcare indices with very

positive implications.

All mortality and morbidity from water borne diseases and poor sanitation would be a thing of the past.

Healthcare utilization would drop and we would reap savings to invest in the prevention and management of costly chronic noncommunicable diseases and mental illnesses which are not being effectively addressed.

If public sector salaries are sinking the economy, then we should have measures of outcomes of public sector workers.

How productive are they? Do they come to work on time? Do they accomplish what they are paid to do? How are they evaluated? Are good workers incentivized and useless workers sacked? Or are these jobs for life, irrespective of performance? Is the taxpayer getting good value for money? Do we need the IMF to ask us these questions and then tell us to do the obvious? Related to this is the size of the political bureaucracy in the public sector. There are so many deputy ministers whose functions could and should be performed by the Chief Directors and other senior civil servants of the various ministries, who work with and advise their respective ministers. This maintains professionalism in the outlook of the various ministries at a much lower cost. It also preserves institutional memory for better continuity of purpose at points of transition between successive political administrations.

The government should find out from successful entrepreneurs in Ghana what in their corporate culture breeds success in the private sector.

the stars; they are to be found within us. We should stop dialing up so called development partners and seeking to be re-colonized by our old classmates, the Chinese, the Turks, Indians, Koreans and the like. What do they have in common? They have transformed themselves from unaccountable cultures like ours to cultures that define accountability as a core value. This has been achieved by visionary, dedicated, selfless and fearless leadership.

There can be no progress without order and Ghana is currently a lawless society as a result of a continuing failure with accountability across all sectors of our society. An interesting development in this regard is to be found in the work of a presidential taskforce which reportedly has retrieved hundreds of millions of unpaid customs duties from various companies. This has been achieved without a single prosecution of even one individual. It makes no sense because the resulting message is that, one can steal and even if you are caught, the simple act of refunding the money is enough restitution.

and indeed even with so much at stake, no one is punished. This can only be corrected by strong leadership from all arms of government at all levels. Is our political class up to the task?

Forget foreign aid, IMF and all that. We made our bed and we have to lie in it and clean it up.

Our problems transcend the sonorous yet loud political arguments we are inundated with constantly.

Our task is that of national development.

That of bringing Ghana into the 21st century from the 19th century in terms of our educational system, healthcare services, business practices, institutional effectiveness and our culture of management.

The treaty has been used for decades by police on both sides of the border to get access to physical evidence.

But when it became clear this fall Facebook would fight tooth and nail against having to comply with a Canadian judge’s order, the Crown applied through the MLAT for the messages and received them.

Facebook Inc.’s lawyers had argued an American company cannot legally comply with a Canadian judge’s orders, whether it was a Superior Court of Justice ruling or one made by the Supreme Court of Canada.

Now that the Crown has possession of the Facebook Messenger messages, the homicide trial can proceed.

The case at issue is the killing of Raymond Beaver in 2017. Several people are charged in the case.

Fraudsters using new ‘line-trapping’ technology to scam public: York Regional Police Codi Wilson, CP24.com

York Regional Police are warning the public about new “line-trapping” technology that fraudsters are using to scam members of the public.

Police first became aware of the technology after investigating a fraud reported to officers on Nov. 6.

Police said a woman received a call informing her that she had been the victim of identity theft and she was then told to hang up and call York Regional Police to confirm that this was in fact the case.

“The victim did this and believed she had spoken to an officer, however through the investigation police have determined that suspects utilized a line-trapping technology

to remain connected to her phone line,” police said in a news release issued Thursday.

Waivers of some Requirements for Canadian Citizenship Applications In general, one becomes a Canadian citizen either by birth or by naturalization pursuant to the Citizenship Act. Any person applying to become a citizen of Canada must meet certain criteria without which the application could fail.

The requirements for a Grant of Citizenship appear in subsections 5(1) and (2) of the Citizenship Act. Applicants for Canadian citizenship are normally permanent residents of Canada. With the exception of a minor who has a Canadian parent or a parent who is applying for citizenship at the same time, applicants must have lived in Canada for three out of the last five years. Each day the applicant spends as a temporary resident or protected person can count as a half-day towards physical presence, up to a maximum of 365 days. Also, with the exception of minors and adults over 54 years, applicants must be able to communicate in either English or French and must pass a test on a prospective Canadian’s rights, responsibilities and knowledge of Canada.

Citizenship are required to meet any applicable requirement under the Income Tax Act to file a return of income in respect of three taxation years that are fully or partially within the five years immediately preceding the date of the Citizenship application. However, a minor who has a Canadian parent or a parent who is applying for citizenship at the same time could be exempted from the tax filing requirements.

A citizenship applicant must also not be under review for immigration or fraud reasons; must not be under a removal order and must not have any unfulfilled conditions related to his or her permanent resident status.

Criminality is an obstacle

to acquisition of Canadian citizenship. If you have committed a crime in or outside Canada, you may not be eligible to become a Canadian citizen for a period of time. Time in prison or time spent under a conditional sentence order cannot be counted towards physical presence. Thus, those serving a conditional sentence order are prohibited from being granted citizenship or taking oath. It should also be noted that a substantial deviation from information you provided to the Immigration at the time you applied for permanent residence could be damaging to your application for citizenship.

An adult applicant may request a waiver of the language and knowledge tests if any such request is necessitated by his or her condition. Section 5(3) of the Citizenship Act grants discretionary power to the Minister to waive the knowledge and language requirements on compassionate grounds. The decision to waive or not is made

by Case Management Branch on the recommendation of the Citizenship officer.

The policy guidelines spell out stringent conditions that must be met to persuade a Citizenship officer to exercise compassionate discretion in situations such as cognitive impairment. In a situation where the applicant’s incapability to take the written knowledge test, even with officer assistance, is beyond doubt and/or in a situation where the applicant will not be able to meet the language requirement due to a permanent and/or cognitive impairment, a request for a waiver becomes necessary. Such requests are not unreasonably denied by Citizenship officers.

Where a request for a waiver is based on one’s medical situation, a detailed medical report from the applicant’s doctor to substantiate the applicant’s claim of incapability would be needed

by Citizenship Canada. If the Citizenship officer is satisfied with the evidence, the officer proceeds to request the approval of Case Management Branch in Ottawa before he finalizes the application for Grant of Citizenship.

Also, under subsection 5(4)

of the Citizenship Act, the Minister may, at his or her discretion, grant citizenship to any person to alleviate cases of statelessness or cases of special and unusual hardship or to reward services of an exceptional nature to Canada.

Grants under this subsection are used in very exceptional cases and each case is considered on its own merit.

The foregoing is just an overview of Citizenship application requirements and waivers. The criteria for Canadian citizenship are changing very fast. Applicants are therefore advised to seek proper advice regarding their eligibility before completing their applications for citizenship.

Inheritance should be a windfall, not part of retirement plan, experts say Freedom 65 seems a distant dream for many Canadians as numbers paint a picture of a debt-laden, savingsaverse nation with some anticipating an inheritance to fund their retirement dreams.

These people, it turns out, may instead receive an unwelcome surprise, experts say. As people live longer, presumed benefactors may spend much of their money, choose to donate or even acquire new heirs through a second marriage - among other potential hiccups.

“The difficulty with inheritance is: you don’t know at that point in time what’s going to happen,” said Tony Maiorino, head at RBC Wealth Management Services.

“Birth certificates don’t come with expiry dates.”

But many Canadians appear to be counting on a payout. Twenty-one per cent of employed baby boomers surveyed

by Ipsos for RBC’s annual retirement myths and realities poll said they were relying on an expected inheritance to

boost their retirement nest egg. (Three per cent also crossed their fingers for a future lottery win.)

With the precarious financial position of many Canadians, it’s no surprise some hope to fall back on a relative’s estate.

Analysts continue to sound alarm bells over rising household debt. Canadians owed roughly $1.74 in creditmarket debt, which includes consumer credit, mortgages and non-mortgage loans, for every $1 of disposable household income, according to Statistics Canada’s figures for the second quarter of 2019.

In the second quarter, total debt per consumer surged to $71,979 - up from roughly $57,000 five years prior, according to creditmonitoring service Equifax.

Alarmingly, while debt piles up, the savings rate is dropping. Poll after poll in recent years finds that Canadians are failing to save adequately for retirement. One discovered 32 per cent of respondents aged

45 to 64 and nearing retirement have nothing saved. Another claimed two out of five indebted Canadians don’t expect to pay back their loans before dying.

Personal finance experts overwhelmingly reject the strategy of relying on an inheritance for financial planning.

Some people, especially older generations, tend to view money as an uncouth topic and may shy away from disclosing their estate plans or speaking about specific numbers with children, said Melanie McDonald, a vice-president for BMO Private Wealth’s trust and estate services in Western Canada.

That makes it difficult to predict just how much inheritance may be forthcoming.

Even if the parents disclose a figure and promise not to spend that money, she said, a good adviser would caution against relying on it.

“It is possible that they change their will,” she said, and could do so right up until the end of their life.

Should the will remain unchanged, the parent’s situation may shift and produce new heirs who can claim a portion of the estate.

If a parent divorces or loses their partner and remarries, a new spouse, stepchildren or even a biological child may secure a branch on the family tree.

Laws tend to provide for the new spouse if their partner dies, said McDonald, which could have “a significant impact” on estate plans.

As people live longer, the risk they’ll outlive their capital rises, said Maiorino.

His mother spent her final years in a home at a significant cost that was paid for through her estate, he said.

“If she would have lived for another five or six years, we would have

gotten to the point where those savings would have begun to be exhausted.”

Assuming the parent won’t need to fund expensive, long-term elder care, they could still spend much - if not all - of their reserves, said Maiorino, simply by living a long life.

Older people are living longer. Between 2014 and 2016, 65-year-old men could expect to live another 19.3 years, according to Statistics Canada, while women that age could expect to see another 22.1 years.

Just a few years prior, between 2005 and 2007, men that age could expect another 17.9 years and women an additional 21.

That’s a lot of time to deplete financial reserves.

Benefactors could also choose to bypass certain heirs, such as children

whom they deem to be succeeding on their own, said Maiorino, and instead leave money for grandchildren.

There’s also an increasing movement to gift much of one’s wealth to charity, especially among the one per cent. Bill and Melinda Gates, along with Warren Buffett, started the giving pledge in 2010. Since then, 204 of the world’s wealthiest individuals, couples and families have joined, according to its website, promising to gift more than half of their wealth to philanthropy or charity over their lifetime or in their will.

With so many potential outcomes, it’s best to see any anticipated inheritance as a windfall, said Maiorino.

“We should be building a plan for your retirement based on your goals and your objectives and your savings.”

Toronto police arrest man who allegedly threw feces at 5 people

Toronto police have arrested a man believed to be responsible for throwing feces at five people.

The man is accused of throwing a bucket of liquefied fecal matter at passersby in three separate incidents that took place between Friday afternoon and late Monday night in Toronto.

Samuel Opoku, 23, of Toronto, was arrested in the Queen Street West and Spadina Avenue area on Tuesday around 6 p.m. ET. Police would not say where exactly he was arrested.

Police said the man was charged with five counts of assault with a weapon and five counts of mischief interfering with property. He is due to appear in a downtown Toronto courtroom at 10 a.m. Wednesday. He is being held at Toronto police’s 52 Division.

In a news release on Tuesday, police allege a man entered John P. Robarts Research Library, at 130 St. George Street, on the University of Toronto downtown campus on Friday and emptied a bucket of feces over a woman and a child seated at a table.

The incident happened at about 5:20 p.m. ET. Police also allege a man entered Scott Library, at 4700 Keele Street, at York University on Sunday and threw fecal matter onto a woman and a man. The incident happened at about 5 p.m.

Police further allege a man approached a woman in the area of College and McCaul streets on Monday and emptied a bucket of feces over her. The incident happened at 11:55 p.m.

Const. Alex Li, spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service, acknowledged that the incidents were unusual for the city.

‘It’s disturbing. It definitely is. It’s very disturbing. Let’s just call it what it is,” Li told CBC Toronto on Tuesday night.

“We are definitely, as an organization, taking this very seriously.”

Police released security camera images of a man on Monday and Tuesday, but it is not known whether the man pictured is the person who was arrested. Li said

security camera images do help police find people responsible for criminal acts.

“I want to stress and thank the public for coming forward with information,” Li said. “We’ve had calls. We’ve had information from the public with regards to these separate incidents.”

Li said the investigation is still in its early stages even though an arrest has been made.

“This is definitely something that is very fresh,” Li said. “Our officers are going to do their due diligence and our forensic officers are going to work tirelessly to obviously find out exactly what this substance is. There will be testing done.”

Toronto Mayor John Tory expressed relief in a tweet at the arrest.

“Great work by Toronto Police arresting an individual in the ‘feces attacks’ investigation. He can’t face justice or be given help until apprehended and it seems our police have that in hand,” Tory said.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- A Canadian man accused of abducting his toddler son in Toronto in 1987 and living on the lam for three decades is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday in the U.S. for illegally obtaining government benefits.

U.S. prosecutors are seeking a prison sentence of up to two years for Allan Mann Jr., who acknowledged lying about his identity to obtain American government benefits during his 31 years on the run.

Mann is scheduled to be sentenced in U.S. District Court in New Haven, Connecticut. His lawyer has asked a judge to impose a sentence of time served so Mann can return to Toronto as soon as possible to defend himself against a pending kidnapping charge.

Canadian authorities allege Mann abducted his toddler son in 1987 during a court-ordered visitation in Toronto and fled to the U.S., where he and his son lived under aliases until he was arrested in Vernon, Connecticut, in October 2018. He has been detained since his arrest.

Officials said Mann told his son that his mother died shortly after his birth.

His son, now in his 30s, was reunited with his mother after his father’s arrest.

Prosecutors say Mann lied about his identity and used the alias Hailee DeSouza to obtain more than $125,000 in Section 8 housing benefits and more than $55,000 in Medicaid assistance.

He pleaded guilty in August to one count of making a false statement, which carries up to five years in prison.

“For 31 years, Allan Mann hid in plain sight in the United States, posing as a

U.S. citizen and reaping the benefits that such citizenship affords, including tens of thousands of dollars in housing and medical assistance,” Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sarah Karwan and Harold Chen wrote in their sentencing recommendation to Judge Janet Hall.

“Mann orchestrated these payments through a deliberate, intricate and lengthy deception on the government at every level,” they wrote.

Mann’s lawyer, David Ring, called the allegations against his client “a simple false statement case, involving modest losses to the United States government.”

“His crime, simply put, was to falsely claim to be an `eligible citizen’ so he could obtain benefits that, as a nonU.S. citizen, he was not entitled to receive,” Ring wrote in his sentencing recommendation.

Ring said Mann fled Canada with his son because he worried about his son’s safety during a bitter custody dispute with his wife, who planned to take the child to Jamaica.

U.S. authorities said Mann acquired counterfeit birth certificates for him and his son saying they were born in Houston, Texas, and used his birth certificate to obtain a Social Security number.

U.S marshals and Toronto police launched a new effort to find Mann in 2016 while meeting at a law enforcement conference on capturing fugitives.

Officials said last year that U.S. marshals interviewed several of Mann’s relatives and friends, including a relative who pointed authorities to Connecticut and Mann’s alleged alias.

But new research, when added to existing studies, suggests that may come with risks.

“Retiring earlier would seem healthy because you might escape a stressful workplace or have more time to exercise — a few studies have shown this,” CBC longevity columnist Sharon Basaraba told The Homestretch.

“But more and larger studies have concluded that early retirement is actually a risk factor for early death.”

Basaraba says a new study looked at how early retirement affected brain health in rural China after a widespread pension plan was introduced about 10 years ago.

The researchers, economists from Harvard and State University of New York, found that while some benefits were

observed, cognitive decline accelerated — and more in women than men.

“The researchers conclude that the downside of poorer brain health really outweighed any positive benefits,” Basaraba said.

“They say it shows social engagement and connectedness — which are often lost when a person retires — may be the most powerful contributors to strong mental function as a person ages.”

When you add this Chinese study to some existing research, a darker picture emerges.

A Michigan study of 3,000 adults in 2016, in which health factors were excluded, found that staying at work for one extra year reduced the risk of dying from any cause by 11 per cent, over the following 20 years, Basaraba said.

GCAO Organizes 2nd Annual Fundraiser Dinner in aid of Heritage Center

A mammoth fundraiser in aid of the proposed Ghanaian Canadian Heritage Center in Toronto was organized by the Ghanaian Canadian Association of Ontario (GCAO) on Saturday, November 9, 2019, at the Ghana Methodist Banquet Hall at Milvan.

On Sunday October 6th, 2019, The Maple Leaf Sports Entertainment (MLSE) collaborated with Ghanalinx Group to organize the 2nd Annual Ghana Heritage Night at the BMO Fields. The event took place on the final and decisive last game of the regular season game between Toronto and Columbus Crew.

Gabe Odartei, the CEO of Ghanalinx Media along with MC Ebone and Mr. Kingsley Eyiah from the Ghanaian-Canadian Association of Ontario (GCAO) Homework Club, organized some Ghanaian youths to participate in the opening ceremony before the game. The youths were provided with some

refreshments and giveaways for their participation.

Many youths and their families came to watch the game and also got an opportunity to meet some of the Ghanaian players from the Columbus team. Ghanaian international players, Harrison Afful, Jonathan Mensah and David Accam took pictures with their fans and signed autographs for them after the game.

Aburi Old Girls Association 7th Annual End of Year Party

The Maple Banquet Hall, 1325 Eglinton Avenue East, Mississauga was the venue for the Aburi Old Girls Association’s 7th Annual End of Year Party. The event was held on Saturday, November 16, 2019.

Opening prayer was offered by Mrs. Nana Adwoa Asare, CoModerator of the Presbytery of West Toronto and a member of the association.

Ms Janet Brakohiapa, President of the association in her welcome address gave a brief history of the school. According to

her, the school was established by the Basel Missionaries in 1946 with 7 students.

National Ethnic Press & Media Council of Canada (NEPMCC) 2019 Awards

27-member publications, radio and television producers and directors as well as community leaders across Canada were honored on Friday November 15, 2019. The ceremony took place at the Members Lounge, Toronto City Hall. It was the 39th annual awards to honor the recipients from diverse communities.

Due to the heavy schedule of mayor John Tory, he spoke briefly by lauding the services being rendered by NEPMCC to its readers throughout Canada. He thanked the Ethnic Press for its patience , resiliency and determination to continue to strive to serve the diverse communities due to some financial constraints such as lack of advertising from governments. As a token of appreciation, mayor John Tory was given a medal and plaque by NEPMCC. Frankly Speaking Confusion erupts in Ghana over Referendum on Local Assembly Elections From Prof. Michael Baffoe, Koforidua, Ghana An avoidable confusion has erupted in Ghana over a proposed national referendum on amending a section of the Ghanaian Constitution to make it possible for political parties’ participation on local assembly elections that are slated to be conducted on December 17th, 2019. The Ghanaian media landscape, especially radio and television, have been awash and saturated with diverse views, some totally irrelevant, on the pros and cons of this issue. Simply put, the issue revolves around a long-held public promise and commitment by the NPP and President Nana Akufo Addo, to allow the Ghanaian public to vote to elect local assembly members, from the Metropolitan Mayors to District Assembly Members.

In trying to implement or fulfil this campaign promise, the current government decided to hold a national Referendum to ask citizens to vote “Yes” or “No” to amend section Article 55 (3) of the 1992 Constitution.The amendment of the article will allow partisan political participation in the District Level Elections (DLEs).

Parliament is working to amend article 243 (1) of the Constitution for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to be elected.The Electoral Commission (EC) has also scheduled

December 17, 2019 to hold the referendum towards the amendment of article 55 (3) alongside election of Assembly and Unit Committee members.

The amendment of article 55 (3) seeks to pave way for election of assembly members on partisan political party lines.

Strangely, the elections of these same officials were to be held on the same day as the national referendum. All was quite in the country on these issues of local government elections and the national referendum until the main Opposition Party in Ghana, the National Democratic Congress, (NDC) decided to hold a Press Conference during which they announced that they were encouraging their members and Ghanaians to vote “No” in the forthcoming referendum.

This public stance of the NDC is what started the whole confusion. Our understanding from later news emerging after the NDC press conference

is that the whole process of the referendum and the participation of political parties in local government elections has been extensively discussed by the governing party (NPP) and the opposition party (NDC) for many months, both inside and outside Parliament and a consensus had been reached by both parties on this issue of conducting the referendum and the need for political parties’ participation in local government elections.

For the NDC then to turn around just three weeks to these exercises to register their total opposition to the same issues, was seen by the government party and other keen observers who were privy to the issue, as a very dishonest and diabolical act.

The NDC party has become a “Press Conference Party” (PCP). They hold press conferences on every issue in the country, big or small, even those that could have been highlighted by just a short public statement.

If it is true, and the NDC has to date not challenged it, that they were party to the discussion and agreement on the need for the referendum and political parties’ participation in these exercises and made a u-turn with only three weeks to go, then they cannot be trusted ever with the destiny of this nation called Ghana.

Consensus-building

is one of the positive attributes of politics and governance in any society. The fact that you are an “opposition” party does not mean that you have to, and need to oppose everything that the ruling party and government initiate and launch, even when those initiatives may be in the interest and development of the nation as a whole.

In most civilized societies around the world, elections to local government assemblies and councils are conducted on political parties’ lines and active participation. That is the reality. There is no way any ruling government or opposition parties and groups will not show strong interests in local government elections because that is where the power of the national political parties emanates from. I have listened to, and monitored most of the discussions and arguments against this referendum and the elections of local assembly officials across the country. Most of them, especially the arguments from the NDC party and its media outlets are infantile to say the least, and dishonest, at worst. This is their favorite line: “the nation will be divided if the local government elections are held along political party lines”.

Wow! wow!! wow!!! Is the nation not already divided along political party lines when national

elections are conducted?

Are there different sets of people, (from the Ghanaian population) imported from space maybe, who will vote in this referendum and the local assembly elections? This argument about division makes absolutely no sense from start to finish. The NDC is yet to fully explain what accounted for their sudden change of mind to kick against this exercise to which they had come to agreement with the government many months back.

I also seriously fault the ruling party and government for their lukewarm and lackadaisical approach to this all-important exercise. I have been in Ghana since midNovember and nothing, almost absolutely nothing, was heard on the public media space about these exercises until the NDC came up all of a sudden with their pubic stance and opposition to the exercises. In effect, there was virtually little to no public education on these very important national exercises.

The government just assumed that by announcing the dates for the exercises, Ghanaians will understand and actively participate.

Hell no! Majority of the Ghanaian populace is still functionally illiterate on many pubic issues and they need very active, open and systematic public education to get

their understanding on important national issues.

I believe the government and ruling party misled themselves into believing that these exercises were going to go as smoothly as the last referendum on the creation of new regions in December 2018.

These two exercises, all of national importance are so different and the local populations have difference stakes and emotional attachments to the creation of new regions, quite different from a referendum on constitutional amendment. The ruling NPP and the Nana Akufo Addo government will have themselves to blame if these exercises fail. The name of the game and panacea for getting the majority of the Ghanaian people to understand issues of national importance are “active and systematic public education”.

Remember the old days during Kwame Nkrumah’s time when information services vans used to tour rural areas showing videos on government programs and developments? They were really effective.

We need to “Sankofa” on these matters. Just sitting in Accra and announcing programs and policies hoping the Ghanaian public will automatically embrace them is not smart politics.

Is eating too much salt damaging your health?

The Royal Society for Public Health has this month called for government action to reduce salt consumption.

But how much salt do you eat – and do you need to cut back?

The NHS recommends adults consume no more than 6g salt (roughly 1 teaspoon) per day, which doesn’t sound too difficult, right? Yet the average salt intake for adults is 8g per day – 33 percent higher – according to the National Diet and Nutrition Survey.

The dangers of eating too much salt are thought to be considerable. It raises blood pressure (a major cause of strokes) and increases the risk of stomach cancer and osteoporosis. The World Health Organisation says managing your salt intake is as important as stopping smoking when it comes to reducing heart disease.

If you’re eating too much salt, what can you do to reduce your intake?

How much salt are you eating?

About 75 percent of the salt we eat is in everyday foods, such as bread, cheese and sauces, according to Action on Salt, so it’s easy to eat too much of it without realising. It’s important to read the nutrition label. Many foods that are high in salt don’t even taste salty, for instance some breakfast cereals, jarred sauces, biscuits and cakes.

The good news is you can take action to reduce your appetite for salt, because the more you eat of it the more you want it. Nutritionist Fiona Hunter says it takes around four weeks to reset your taste for salt.

How to measure the salt in food Some food labels only provide the sodium content, which is not the same as the salt content.

1g sodium = 2.5g salt, so the 6g adult daily salt guideline is equivalent to 2.4g sodium.

Low-sodium salts contain potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride. While the sodium content is less, too much potassium is also a health risk for people with certain kidney and heart conditions.

Sea salt and table salt are both sodium chloride, so the daily amount of 6g applies equally to both.

Although, as sea salt has larger grains, a pinch of sea salt probably contains less salt by weight than a pinch of table salt.

Easy ways to cut your salt intake You can make a big difference to your salt intake with a few simple changes to your diet.

Be wary of high salt levels in sauces and marinades, including soy sauce and fish sauce.

Swap your ketchup to a low-salt version.

Check the salt levels on the nutrition label. Foods may be higher in salt than

you think; for instance a can of baked beans can easily contain 2.4g salt.

Choose reduced-salt options.

Choose takeaways carefully. A takeaway or delivery pizza can contain as much as 5g salt, nearly all of an adult’s daily limit in one meal.

Make your own sauces and soups. Stir-fries, pasta sauces, soups and curries will all taste better and are likely to contain much less salt if you make them from scratch. Cook them in big batches and freeze for a steady supply of quick, healthy meals.

Swap salt for spice, using fresh or dried seasonings such as chilli, garlic, cumin, lemon juice and black pepper.

Choose fresh fish or meat rather than cured, which can be very high in salt.

Cut back on salty crisps and snacks and opt for crunchy vegetables, fruits or low-fat crackers.

Patients of Alforat Dental advised of potential risk for hepatitis and HIV Nov. 25, 2019 (Mississauga, ON) –The Region of Peel – Public Health is advising anyone who received dental services at Alforat Dental Center between February 2014 and September 19, 2019 to be tested, as a precaution, for bloodborne infections.

After receiving a complaint, Peel Public Health inspected Alforat Dental Center at 2395 Cawthra Rd., Unit #1 in Mississauga and identified concerns with the cleaning, sterilization and storage of dental equipment. The clinic was temporarily closed on September 20. It reopened on October 7, 2019 once the clinic demonstrated compliance with provincial infection prevention and control standards.

Although the risk of infection is considered low, patients are advised to talk to their doctor about getting tested for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV. “The investigation identified several improper processes where we could not confirm the sterility of the dental equipment used at the clinic,” said Dr. Jessica Hopkins, Medical Officer of Health for the Region of Peel. “As a precaution, we recommend that all clinic patients speak to their doctor about getting tested to rule out bloodborne infections.”

Is it better to drink cow’s milk or a dairy-free alternative?

Milk plays a crucial role in the life of all mammals, right from birth. But some say that drinking another mammal’s milk is unnecessary, unnatural, even unhealthy.

But calcium is crucial during our adolescence for the development of bone strength, says Ian Givens, an expert in food chain nutrition at the University of Reading.

“If you don’t get bone development correct in your teenage years, you run a higher risk of bone weakness in later life, particularly for women after the menopause, who lose the benefits of oestrogen,” Givens says. (Read more about whether we should drink milk to strengthen bones).

By Jessica Brown As the only animal to drink the milk of another species, humans have an unusual relationship with the white stuff.

Most other animals are weaned off milk in infancy, once we start to need more complex foods. So why do humans keep drinking it?

Health concerns

People living in parts of the world where people domesticated cows, including northern Europe and North America, only evolved to digest lactose around 10,000 years ago. As a result, around 30% of the world’s population continue to produce lactase, the enzyme required to be able to digest lactose, into adulthood. The rest cut back their production after the weaning phase of infancy.

Most people, then, are lactose intolerant, making milkdrinking northern Europeans an anomaly. In this region, only around 9% of people are lactose intolerant. Even so, northern Europeans might wish to reduce their milk intake because of other concerns, such as our health and the environmental costs of animal agriculture, which has been driving the growth of dairy-free alternatives to cow’s milk.

But are there any health benefits to ditching cow’s milk for an alternative drink, or does cow’s milk provide us with vital nutrients we can’t get elsewhere? And does milk actually aggravate most people’s lactose intolerance?

Cow’s milk is a good source of protein and calcium, as well as nutrients including vitamin B12 and iodine. It also contains magnesium, which is important for bone development and muscle function, and whey and casein, which have been found to play a role in lowering blood pressure.

The UK’s National Health Service recommends children between the age of one and three consume 350 milligrams of calcium a day, which just over half a pint of milk would provide, for healthy bone development. But when it comes to adults, research as to whether cow’s milk helps to keep our bones healthy is conflicting.

While calcium is required for healthy bones, the evidence that consuming a calcium-rich diet will prevent bone fractures is unclear. A number of studies have found no significant decrease in fracture risk from drinking milk, while some research suggests that milk could actually contribute to fracture risk.

One study in Sweden found that women who drank more than 200 millilitres of milk daily – less than one glass – had a higher risk of fractures. However, the study was observational, so the researchers cautioned against hyperbolic interpretations of their findings. It could be that people who are prone to fractures tend to drink more milk, warns the study’s author.

Another concern around milk in recent decades is the hormones we consume in cow’s milk. Cows are milked when they’re pregnant, when their oestrogen levels increase 20-fold. Although one study linked these oestrogen levels to breast, ovarian and uterine cancers, Laura Hernandez, who studies lactation biology at the University of Wisconsin in the US, says ingesting hormones through cow’s milk is nothing to worry about. After all, “Human milk has hormones in it, too – it’s part of being a mammal,” she says.

A more recent review of studies looking into whether the amount of oestrogen consumed via milk is harmful found no cause for concern. Researchers found that oestrogen levels only start to affect mice’s reproductive systems when supplemented with 100 times the levels found in cow’s milk, and researchers only detected an increase in oestrogen levels in female mice and a decrease in testosterone levels in male mice after the dosage reached 1,000 times normal levels. It’s very unlikely that humans are a thousand times more sensitive to oestrogen levels in milk than mice, says the study’s author, Gregor Majdic, a researcher at the University of Ljubljana’s Center for Animal Genomics in Slovenia.

Shift work: How do you adjust to daytime sleeping?

Several people have asked me at various times about this topic.

Here are some tips to help you adjust if you work night shifts.

It is common to have difficulties sleeping during the day. Humans are naturally wired to sleep best at night and be awake during the day. However, modern work schedules require some people to try to accommodate the unnatural schedule of shift work — being awake at night and sleeping during the day.

In order to make this adjustment, you need to pay special attention to your sleep environment and your preparation for sleep. If shift work is a necessary part of your work life, here are some suggestions that may help:

A v o i d * stimulants, such as caffeine and nicotine, several hours before bedtime.

If you are working nights and need to sleep from morning until afternoon, try to avoid caffeine after midnight. * Arrange to sleep uninterrupted in a quiet, dark room. This means you may have

to turn off or unplug your phone, hang darkening curtains on the windows or wear a sleep eye mask, make appointments outside of your sleep period, and train your family and friends to leave you alone while you sleep. Make your sleep time sacred. * Fit in a nap.

When your daytime sleep period is too short, taking a nap just before work or on a break during your night shift has been shown to improve alertness and reduce accidents while on the job. * Develop and follow a sleep routine.

It’s best if you go to sleep and wake up at the same time every

day. Try not to vary this too much on weekends. Your body likes routine.

Take extra care * to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly.

Shift workers tend to gain weight and have an increased risk of heart disease — mostly because they tend to eat fattier foods, smoke more and exercise less.

If you have tried all these things and are still having problems getting enough quality sleep during the day, talk to your doctor or a sleep specialist.

Sometimes medications may be helpful and safe.

In other cases, there may be an underlying sleep disorder that needs to be addressed. People who are overweight may develop a condition called sleep apnea in

which they stop breathing many times during sleep.

This leads to poor sleep and you wake up tired and unrefreshed. This condition can easily be treated if properly diagnosed.

Even though these tips are directed to shift workers they can also help individuals who have difficulty sleeping at night.

Weight loss: Ready to change your habits?

Many disease states are affected or brought on by being overweight or obese. Many times we all decide that we need to lose weight and sometimes we plunge into a weight loss program. In this article, we will review some questions that you need to answer before you decide to lose weight.

Are you motivated to lose weight? Is your weightloss goal realistic?

Answer these questions and more to make sure you’re ready to start a weight-loss program — and know what steps to take if you aren’t quite there.

Your weight-loss success depends in large part on your readiness to take on the challenge. If you jump in before you’re ready, your weight-loss plan might buckle under the first challenge.

Use these questions to assess your weight-loss readiness.

1. Are you motivated to make long-term lifestyle changes?

Successful weight loss depends on permanent lifestyle changes, such as eating healthy foods and including physical activity in your daily routine. That could represent a significant departure from your current lifestyle.

Be honest.

Knowing that you need to make changes in your life and actually doing it are two different things. You might need to overhaul your diet so that you’re eating more whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lowfat dairy products, for example. You’ll also need to find time for physical activity, ideally at least 30 to 45 minutes — or more — nearly every day of the week.

Whether your motivation for undertaking these changes is better health, improved appearance or simply feeling better about yourself, find your motivation and focus on it.

2. Have you addressed the big distractions in your life?

If you’re dealing with major life events, such as marital problems, job stress, illness or financial worries, you might not want to add the challenge of overhauling your eating and exercise habits. Instead, consider giving your life a chance to calm down before you launch your weight-loss program.

3. Do you have a realistic picture of how much weight you’ll lose and how quickly?

Achieving and maintaining a healthy

weight is a lifelong process. Start by making sure your weight-loss goal is safe and realistic — such as losing 10 percent of your current weight. Then aim to lose 1 to 2 pounds (0.5 to 1 kilogram) a week until you reach your goal.

This means burning 500 to 1,000 calories more than you consume each day — through diet, exercise or both.

You might lose weight more quickly if you change your habits significantly. Be careful, though. Radical changes that aren’t sustainable aren’t likely to be effective over the long term.

4. Have you resolved any emotional issues connected to your weight?

Emotions and food are often intertwined. Anger, stress, grief and boredom can trigger emotional eating. If you have a history of an eating disorder, weight loss can be even trickier.

To prepare for the challenges, identify any emotional issues related to food. Talk to your doctor or a mental health provider, if needed.

They may contain other micronutrients, she adds, but you won’t get the same benefits from an almond drink as you would from eating almonds.

Milk alternatives are usually fortified with the nutrients

that occur naturally in cow’s milk, such as calcium.

But scientists don’t know if fortified vitamins and minerals give us the same health benefits as those naturally occurring in cow’s milk and say further research is needed to establish the consequences of added calcium in the human body.

“The bioavailability of calcium may be different when it’s fortified compared to when found naturally, and this is a big issue with some of these products,” says Gallo. “Cow’s milk contains other things, including fat, which may affect nutrients’ bioavailability.”

In the US, however, cow’s milk is fortified with vitamin D, and research suggests this can have similar beneficial effects to getting the vitamin naturally from sun exposure.

Nevertheless, experts are advising that we don’t assume that these alternatives are a likefor-like for children, says nutritionist Charlotte Stirling-Reed – even when they are fortified. “Cow’s milk is a

very nutrient-dense food, and fortified plant milk doesn’t always cover all nutrients,” she says.

Strangers in New Homelands 12th annual Migration and Settlement Conference held in Winnipeg

The 12th edition of the annual Migration and Settlement Conference dubbed “Strangers in New Homelands” hosted by the Faculty of Social Work, University of Manitoba was held from Wednesday October 30thto Friday November 1st, 2019.Under the direction and Chairmanship of our Contributing Editor, Prof. Michael Baffoe of the Faculty of Social Work, this year’s conference featured a number of distinguished Speakers, presenters, panelists and participants from academia, researchers, policy-makers, migration and settlement agency services practitioners from around the world. It was held at the CandInns Polo Park Destination Center, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The Keynote Speaker was Prof. Afua Dadesen Cooper, 3rd James Robinson Johnston Chair in Black Canadian studies at Dalhousie University. Her presentation highlighted the historical migration policies of Canada and how the Canadian state has historically used its immigration policy as a strategy of exclusion, as it pertains in particular, to African-descended populations.

Other distinguished speakers included Kobra Rahimi, a young former Kurdish refugee who spent the first fourteen years of her life in a refugee camp in Iraq before migrating to Canada with her family. Also speaking at the Conference were Mr. Egbert Gaye, Editor/Publisher of the Black Community Newspaper in Quebec, The Montreal Community Contact. His presentation focused on the role of the Ethnic Media in projecting positive aspects of the Black and other Ethnic communities in Canada that are often cast in negative light by mainstream media outlets.

A Criminologist from Ryerson University, Dr. Graham Hudson, surveyed the origins, aims and implementation of sanctuary city policies in Canada, with a focus on the most developed refugee sanctuary

policies in Montreal and Toronto.

An Ethno-Musicologist, and Human Rights activist, Gary Martin, held conference participants spell-bound with his music performances on the opening night of the conference as well as at the luncheon hour presentation on the second day of the conference. His two presentations were on the story of survival and the role music plays in the lives of migrant youth, and the power of music in the migration trajectory.

There were a number of powerful youth presenters and performers during the conference. These included The Peaceful Village After-School Program in Manitoba, the TRIO Dance Group from Winnipeg and the Sistema Winnipeg Youth Music Group from Elwick Community School who entertained conference participants to Jazz music performances.

There were a number of presentations as well on “Best Migration Settlement Practices” from a number of immigrant and refugee services practitioners from around Canada and the United States.

Par-boil the groundnuts, peel and dry Prepare batter, leave to set Put the groundnuts into the batter Pass them through the flour Deep fry in hot oil Serve as snack

2 margarine tins roasted corn flour 6 medium sized smoked herrings 750ml palm nut liquid 1 small piece of salted fish (optional) 1/2 teaspoonful ground pepper 6 Onions (medium size) 2 Large tomatoes 1/2 margarine tin beans Salt to taste 500ml water

Method 1.

Boil beans till soft 2.

Wash and break fish into pieces and add cut onions and little water to simmer Add palm nut liquid, tomatoes, pepper, beans and salt 3.

Skim off oil 5.

Add roasted corn flour to soup and stir well with a stirrer to prevent lumps 6.

Mould and pile up smoothly in a bowl and garnish with the palm oil skimmed and crab.

Peel and pound or mash the plantain until free from lumps Mix it with ground corn, or rice flour, pepper, ginger, onion and salt Add the palm oil Put into tins greased with palm oil Bake in a hot oven for about 39 minutes

Savory Rice Ingredients 200g rice 1 teaspoonful puree 1/2 teaspoonful cayenne pepper 500ml white stock 50g onion 250ml cooking oil

Cook the onion in the oil Add the puree and cayenne and cook for some few minutes Add the rice, braise, then add the stock and leave to simmer Cover the rice and leave to cook Garnish with green pepper and serve

Isaac DeGraft Takyi THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS: A SAVIOUR IS BORN And the angel answered and said to her [Mary], “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.” - Luke 1:35

It’s one of the most familiar stories in human history: the birth of Jesus in a lowly manger in Bethlehem. A Savior, which is Christ the Lord. Lukeaccounts for the story in these words:

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant

about the intricate details of the first Christmas? How Mary handled the startling message from the angel Gabriel? Why God saw it fit to first appear to the lowly shepherds, and chose a manger in Bethlehem?

Have you ever thought about what it would have been like to stand before a multitude of angels?

Has Christmas lost its significance?How can we prepare our hearts to celebrate the birth of our Savior in our frantic, consumerdriven society? shepherd of love. Through angels, God would send good tidings of great joy that would come to all people everywhere. The humble events surrounding Christ’s birth glorify all that our Savior is. From the stable to the Cross, He redeemed us from sin to give us life. Just as His birth introduced grace and redemption for all people then, the invitation continues for us today.

This undeserved gift is truly what the wonder of the first Christmas is all about!

Luke’s gospel tells the Christmas story in his unique style: In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped

him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. One specific area is the use of various modes of technology to allow the public to provide feedback on the work of public servants. All public agencies should have websites and mobile platforms for receiving such feedback, so that systems and services are improved and poor performers are identified and helped or removed as appropriate.

Technology is grossly underutilized in both the healthcare and education systems, two areas that should form the bedrock of development because nothing spurs development on more than a healthy, well educated and skilled workforce. The watermelon of our problems has become so large; we do not seem to know which side to slice first.

Nothing is truly managed or properly maintained in Ghana.

The art of managerial supervision is unknown in many of our local organizations so there is no growth, innovation or true capacitybuilding to sustain our increasingly complex systems for a rapidly growing population.

Who sets our targets for development? We must be architects of our own development. If Nkrumah had let others decide on the Akosombo Dam, we would be in total darkness not “Dumsor”. We should be informed by best practices and successes around us but more importantly we must regain our position as pacesetters. Do we have the capacity for enough strategic thinking and planning to lead such a transformation? Yes, there are Ghanaians doing such things within the country and all over the world but can they succeed in a culture without accountability?

This is how we lose our

most valuable experts to other countries and international organizations who value their contributions and act on their input. We must face up to the cost of kicking the can down the road every chance we get. Now we have hit a wall and there is nowhere else to kick the can. We have to pick it up and fix it.

At a very basic transactional level, the government employs new workers and they are routinely not paid for a year or more. Eventually when they are paid, it is not retroactive. Not only is this unethical, it is cruel. The failure to meet such statutory obligations is troubling and the systemic problems underlying this phenomenon must be addressed with those responsible for these failures being held accountable. This is a man-made problem.

Ghanaians must be inspired to transform themselves from beggars to doers. We must solve problems instead of saying everything is a challenge. In the past we looked forward to challenges because they invited competitiveness and caused us to innovate but now it is an excuse for inertia.

We have become experts in describing problems in detail but offering no solutions. When solutions are present, we avoid them for political expediency or the fear of causing offence.

This is a central feature of our unsustainable management culture and we are paying the price for this. We are a country awash in resources and human capital yet we are defeated by our own ineptitude, enabled by a culture that does not value and act on hard data. The leadership class is afraid of applying our own stated rules because corruption has permeated all levels of decision – making.

We are pretending to be a country that was called Ghana.

We have established a structure of democratic governance with some gains, especially in protecting individual human rights but we have effectively squandered the peace dividend. The funding of

political parties is opaque and this hides all the compromises politicians make to get elected. This is an area crying openly for reforms that should lead to transparency and better regulation .Parliament has been dragging its feet on the passage of the freedom of information bill because of the self-interest of its members.

True citizenship means using the power of the vote to choose leaders who are proven problemsolvers, who inspire us to better ourselves by their example. Citizens must demand results from their elected and appointed leaders from the local level and up the chain to seek real verifiable outcomes for identified problems in their communities.

Citizens of local districts must contribute to solutions themselves in concrete and practical ways.

Community activism in partnership with government at the local level needs to be fostered across the country. Also, to break the dysfunctional stranglehold of the major political parties, Municipal and District Chief executives must be elected locally, not appointed by the Executive Branch.

Years of longstanding corruption and failure to deliver services have caused citizens to become tax avoidant because they do not trust that funds collected will be used to serve their communities. This is another reason why leaders must elected at the local level. Only then can trust and accountability be restored.

Our leaders must demonstrate that they understand their responsibilities, not just their positions, titles

perks or rank.

There was once a country called Ghana. It had an educational system that was the envy of the world beyond Africa. It had a functioning railway system, metropolitan and inter-city buses ran on time; it had a professional police force that served the public and an army of public servants who built institutions citizens could depend on. We have not stagnated, we have gone backwards. The seeds of this retrogression were planted when self-appointed leaders devalued higher education and existing hierarchies of order in our society and were unable to replace what they destroyed with a better system.

He said he had none. He simply came to work and dealt with the problems he was confronted with at that time, as president. He was not guided by a manifesto.

He addressed realities that confronted him as a leader should and we all know the outcome of his tenure. He died for his convictions but saved what has become the greatest nation on earth from destroying itself.

Black Stars move up four places in latest FIFA Rankings WBO Africa Champion Emmanuel Martey to fight in Russia

Ghana have moved up four places in the latest FIFA ranking released on Thursday thanks to two victories over the past one month.

The Black Stars win over South Africa at the Cape Coast Stadium in the AFCON qualifier as well as the away victory over Equatorial Guinea contribute to the huge leap.

Ghana occupied the the 51st position last month on the global rankings but have now moved to 47th globally representing a substantial rise in the rankings.
