Canada celebrates National Holiday on July 1st By: Dr Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB. and Emmanuel Ayiku. Toronto ON

Canadians across the country and around the world show their pride in their history, culture and achievements. It’s been a day of celebration, where many festivities are held across the country, since 1868. Canada Day, observation on July 1st, is a national holiday marking the anniversary of Confederation in 1867, when the British North America Act came into effect. It was originally known as Dominion Day until it was renamed in 1982.Feb 27, 2017 History of Canada Day, The Creation of Canada Day July 1, 1867: Starting in the late 15th century, French and British expeditions explored, colonized, and fought over various places within North America in what constitutes present-day Canada. The colony of New France was claimed

in 1534 with permanent settlements beginning in 1608. France ceded nearly all its North American possessions to the United Kingdom in 1763 after the French defeat in the Seven Years’ War. The now British Province of Quebec was divided into Upper and Lower Canada in 1791 and reunified in 1841. In 1867, the Province of Canada was joined with two other British colonies of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia through Confederation, forming a self-governing entity named Canada. The new country expanded by incorporating other parts of British North America, the Central and Western provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, cont’d on pg. 35

Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders announces stepping down on July 31

By: Dr Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB.

Big news and big things are happening in Police Forces across North America in the wake of the murder of Black American George Floyd at the hands of Police in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A number of senior Police Officers have either resigned, being fired or suspended on issues related to the gruesome murder of the unarmed and non-resistant Black man.Canada has had its share of the shake-up and rumblings in the top echelon of North American Police Forces. On Monday June 8th, 2020 Toronto Police Chief, Mark Saunders announced that he is stepping down at the end of July. At a news conference announcing his intention to

step down, Chief Saunders did not give a reason for his departure, but said there are things he wants to do

for the City of Toronto “for free”. Mark Saunders, who is Toronto’s first Black Police chief, was appointed in April

of 2015. He has worked in policing for over 37 years. He is leaving the position eight months before his contract was set to expire in 2021. The City’s Police Services Board announced last summer that it had made the decision to renew Saunders’ appointment until April 30, 2021. It was only the second time in the last 40 years that a Toronto police chief would serve more than a single term. “Thank you, Toronto, for working with me during my tenure,” Saunders said during the news conference. Chief Saunders debunked rumors that his health was a factor in his decision to leave. Saunders underwent a kidney transplant in 2017. He said he was looking forward to being

a full-time dad and husband again. “Family is the most important thing to me right now,” he said.

Toronto Mayor Tory thanks Police Chief In a statement issued later on Monday afternoon, Toronto Mayor John Tory said Saunders told him last week he planned to retire. He thanked Chief Saunders for his “exemplary service” to the City of Toronto. “He has been a dedicated and responsible chief of police who has always worked to protect the city. He cares deeply about the people of the city, all of its neighborhoods, and about the men and women who serve with him”, Tory said.
