President Akufo-Addo addresses the Ghanaian community in the Greater Toronto Area

The Ghanaian Presbyterian Church Toronto was the venue of a meeting with Ghana President H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa AkufoAddo. The address took place on Sunday, June2, 2019 as Ghanaians trooped in their numbers and filled the sanctuary of the church. They were dressed in their colorful attires with Nananom in their colorful native costumes and decked

in golden bangles. The atmosphere was so colorful that President Akufo-Addo couldn’t hide his admiration for how resplendent Nananom were in their costumes. The sanctuary was filled to capacity that extra chairs were put in the lobby for the overflow of people to view the ongoing event on screens outside.

“Oye Oye” as he showed his dexterity in dancing to the gospel music.

Both the national anthems of Ghana and Canada were sang after which Pastor Eric Amoah and Malam Hussein Khadri rendered Christian and Moslem prayers to begin the meeting.

performed spectacular marching drills to welcome the President.

African Community celebrates Int’l Decade for People of African Descent

The International Decade for People of African Descent was celebrated with a glittering award ceremony at the Pearson Convention Center, 2638 Steeles Avenue East, Brampton. It was hosted by the African Canadian Social Development Council (ACSDC) on Saturday, May 11th 2019.Nene Kabu Asante, President of ACSDC in his welcome address noted that the UN General Assembly’s Resolution #68/237 as the International Decade for People of African Descent was passed in 2015 will end in 2024. The main objectives are to promote, respect, protection and fulfillment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms of people of African descent. It is also to promote a greater knowledge of, and respect for the diverse heritage, culture and contribution of people of African descent to the development of societies.

He added that the gathering should be seen as part of this journey of awareness and rejuvenation of the indomitable African spirit. Getting our Youth into Productive Ventures in the summer

Members of Parliament not above the Law: All should be equal before the Law in Ghana

Spring time is here and we will soon be rolling into the summer months. After the blistering biting winter, the summer is about to begin. Most post-secondary institutions have gone on recess and the high schools will recess by the end of June. Theseason will therefore bring out large numbers, thousands of young people, to homes and communities across the country for at least the next three months. Summer time is usually an exciting time for the youth. They are times when the youth feel they need well-deserving breaks and rest from the past nine to ten months of intense academic activity.

All things being equal, the youth need to stay home and just “rest” or as they say just “chill” out. The reality in North American society is different. The youth cannot simply chill or just stay at home and “rest.” The reality of society is that most of the youth, especially those in their mid to late teenage years, need to find jobs in the summer. These summer employment opportunities are needed to first offer some of the youth their first experience on the job market. It is their baptism into the world of work, which is positive for most of them. Most of them also really need to work to earn money to supplement their allowances and for some, to pay for their education in the next academic session.

These job forays aside, we can also not afford to just watch our youth stay home and chill.

Experiences over the years have shown that the devil always finds work and mischief for ideal hands. When some youth hang out doing nothing in the summer months, that becomes a recipe for disaster. A lot of violence that have cropped up in our communities that have involved our youth have happened in the summer months when some youth have nothing to do and just congregate and hang out in shopping malls, street corners, community centers and other places. For some youth too, these are the times to settle scores with their “enemies” for things that happened in the course of the academic year. These fears are real!

With all these frightening experiences to guide us, we are appealing to all leaders in our community, parents/ guardians, religious, business and community leaders to rally together to find productive engagements and ventures for the youth to engage in during the critical three months of the summer. For those that own and run businesses, we encourage you to offer some employment, however limited, to some of our youth to keep them busy and productive in the summer.

To our religious leaders we urge them to design and launch productive programs that will assist the youth not just learn religious material but programs that are geared towards training for responsible lives, life in the real world and productive roles in the community.

All of us have high stakes and roles to play to ensure that our youth end their summer vacation in a peaceful manner without any mishaps.

The responsibility for mentoring our youth, supporting them and guiding them to stay out of trouble belongs to all of us. We should get on board and offer whatever assistance and services that we can offer to achieve the goals above.

To our youth we wish you a very pleasant summer. Please stay out of trouble so that you may return to school well refreshed and matured than the previous school year. To those that just finished High schools and will be heading out Colleges/Universities and other post-secondary institutions, we wish you all the best in the next phase of your academic careers.

By: Prof. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB The normal democratic dispensation and governmental system which Ghana has adopted rest on a system of Separation of Powers. By this dictum, the Executive branch of government can initiate laws but they have to be passed by the Legislative Arm (Parliament) which then sends the passed Legislation to the Head of the Executive, the President, to sign it off (“Assent”) into law. Once any law is passed, it is binding on ALL citizens and residents of the country without exception.

Anytime any person who resides or finds himself/herself within the territory of the nation breaks any of its laws, the responsibility of interpreting and enforcing the laws falls on the Judiciary Arm of the law to mete out “justice” according to the rule of law and due process, in a balanced way, without “fear or favour”. This means that everyone, including members of the Executive Arm that initiated the legislation or the Legislative Arm (Parliament) that passed the law are all bound to obey the law.

Evidence abound in Ghana’s recent history when some members of the Judiciary that are supposed to be the custodians of the law were found to have broken some aspects of the law by taking bribes in the course of their jobs. Some were dismissed and others are facing prosecution. The above means that when it comes to obeying the law, no-one is excempted. Recent developments in Ghana are portending to a frightening development where some members of the Legislature that passes the laws believe that they are not bound by the same laws that they passed for the nation.

One major issue that is facing our nation Ghana, is the deep-seated corruption that now permeates every aspect of the nation’s life and its institutions. There have been calls and loud clamour for the eradication of this dreaded canker called corruption.

It was this national cry to fight and stamp out corruption that led the present government in Ghana led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo to set up the Office of Special Prosecutor specifically mandated to investigate complaints of corruption and prosecute those against whom evidence is established. The person who was appointed as the Special Prosecutor was grilled by Parliament through its Vetting Committee and finally approved for the position.

It looks like the Members of Parliament think that they approved the appointment of the Special Prosecutor for “other” citizens and residents of Ghana, not the “honorable” MPs. People have been complaining loudly that they are not seeing any action from the Special Prosecutor on prosecuting corrupt public officials.

Ironically the first person who has been thoroughly investigated and

charged with corruption by the Special Prosecutor is a Member of the Legislature (Parliament) that passed the very law in the first place. And the alleged thief who got caught first in the anti-corruption net is no other than the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, the Rt. “Honourable Mahama Ayariga.

The Special Prosecutor summoned Hon. Ayariga to court on charges of dealing in foreign currency without authorization, evading import duties and taxes, and most serious of all, trying to swindle the nation by taking a “car loan” from Parliament and using that money to do illegal car import and selling business.

Hon. Ayariga, in an angry outburst, challenged the Special Prosecutor and vowed that he would NOThonour the summons to appear in court to answer those charges like all citizens of the country are required to do. He stooped so low as to insult the Special Prosecutor, attacked him personally and vowed never to go to court to answer those charges. He was clearly sending the nation a message that he, as a Member of Parliament that passed that same law, is not bound to obey that very law. He claimed immunity from prosecution citing various sections of the Constitution of the country, to wit: Article 117, 118 and 122 to buttress his misguided claim to immunity from prosecution.

When the case was called at the Courts, the Learned Judge would have nothing of that Parliamentary immunity claims. He ordered that Hon. Ayariga is covered by no such immunity once he has been charged with a criminal offense and gave him up to 1.00 PM that day to show up in court of face the consequences. Hon. Ayariga then got the message clearly that “man pass man”, in this case “Judge pass MP” when it comes to interpreting the law.

He ran like a hare to the court with about seventeen of his fellow MPS in tow to “obey” the judge’s order.

This case raises some very disturbing issues about adherence to the law in Ghana. The message should be drummed loudly into the ears of our “Honourable” Members of Parliament that they are NOT above the laws of the country even if they made those laws. We are told that about nine more MPs have also almost qualified to be investigated by the Special Prosecutor and possibly charged if enough evidence is found against them. They should all be ready, for charity begins at home. In this case, the route to enforcing and obeying the laws that are passed in Ghana begins at the very place and with the Members who make the laws…Parliament! We should all be seen to be EQUAL before the law.

Members of Parliament should not, and cannot be allowed to live in an animal farm where some animals are unequal before the law. We shall be watching!

D-Day Anniversary brings Trudeau, Trump to U.K. for Tribute Ceremony

The Normandy invasion resulted in 359 Canadian deaths in one day.

The terrible and tragic story of the Second World War played out in an elaborate ceremony in this city in southern England on Wednesday, mere metres from where thousands of Canadian, American and British soldiers boarded a flotilla of ships exactly 75 years earlier, on the eve of D-Day. The ceremony, in which Canada and its role in helping free Europe from Nazi Germany figured prominently, was attended by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, U.S. President Donald Trump, Queen Elizabeth and other world leaders as well as a handful of the veterans, most now in their 90s, who fought in that conflict to free the world of tyranny.

Trudeau and the other leaders not only paid homage to those who fought and died defeating Nazi Germany, but also promised to work together to ensure the horrors of that global conflict are never again repeated — an especially relevant message at a time of growing global instability.

“Over the last 75 years, our nations have stood up for peace in Europe, democracy, tolerance and the rule of law,” leaders from 16 countries pledged in a joint declaration after the ceremony.

“Although twice wounded, Lt.Col. Merritt continued to direct the unit’s operations with great vigour and determination,” Trudeau said, reading from a citation in the London Gazette from October 1942.

“We re-commit today to those shared values because they support the stability and prosperity of our nations and our people. We will work together as allies and friends to defend these freedoms whenever they are threatened.”

Among the countries represented were belligerents on both sides of the Second World War, including France, Germany, the United States and U.K. One country missing was Russia.

Under a hazy sky and with a brisk breeze blowing in from the harbour, the ceremony charted the course of the war in Europe: from Germany’s invasion of Poland in September 1939, which pulled

in France, Britain and Canada, among others, to the fateful decision to launch the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944.

Along the way, actors and dignitaries recited sombre diary entries and letters written by those who had fought — and in some cases died — in the war, while dancers and musicians recalled some of the music of the day before turning to martial tunes.

At one point, Trudeau took the stage to recount the story of Lt.-Col. Cecil Merritt, who was awarded a Victoria Cross, the military’s highest decoration, for his role in saving countless fellow Canadian soldiers during the disastrous raid on the French

More than 900 Canadians died at Dieppe and nearly 2,000 more were captured, including Merritt. But as Wednesday’s ceremony noted, the lessons learned from that attack helped carry the Allies to victory in Normandy before the liberation of Paris and, eventually, the fall of Berlin.

The Allied invasion of Normandy involved nearly 150,000 troops — including 14,000 Canadian soldiers — who stormed ashore into German machine gun fire.

Before the day ended, 359 Canadians had been killed and another 715 wounded or captured. The battle for Normandy would continue for

another two months and cost more than 5,000 Canadian lives.

Wednesday’s ceremony also featured accounts from U.S. and British soldiers as well as addresses by Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron and the Queen.

“Seventy-five years ago, hundreds of thousands of young soldiers, sailors and airmen left these shores in the cause of freedom,” the Queen said. “The fate of the world depended on their success. Many of them would never return, and the heroism, courage and sacrifice of those who lost their lives will never be forgotten.” .

Trump, whose appearance at Wednesday’s event capped an official state visit to the United Kingdom, read a quote from one of his predecessors, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who was president of the United States for most of the Second World War. The recognition of the importance of the Ethnic Press as vital tool to our democracy The National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada has been selected as one of eight groups of the Media industry to provide to federal government recommendations on the eligibility criteria for taxation measures announced in the 2019 Budget.

In the 2018 Fall Economic Statement and in the 2019 Budget, the Government of Canada proposed measures to support Canadian Journalism with two tax credits and measures to encourage charitable donations to eligible organizations of the industry.

According to the announcement the Hon. Pablo Rodriquez, Minister of the Canadian Heritage, is forming an independent panel of experts to make recommendations on the criteria for the tax measures in

order to confirm that they are fair, efficient, transparent and inclusive of all sectors of the industry.

The Hon. Rodriquez announced that the has invited eight Media Associations representing Canadian Journalism to submit the name of a candidate in order to participate in the business of the independent panel of experts.

Child labour in mining, poor working conditions take centre stage in inter-regional meeting Countries represented include Colombia, Congo, Cote d’ Ivoire, France, Ghana, Guyana, Indonesia, Italy, Mali, Mongolia, Nigeria, Philippines, Thailand, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States -- Experts and global actors from Africa, Asia and South America gathered in Manila to address child labour and poor working conditions in artisanal and small-scale gold mines (ASGM).

The first-ever Inter-regional Knowledge-Sharing Forum on Child Labour and Working Conditions in ASGM of the International Labour Organization (ILO) served as a platform for dialogue.

Governments, employers’ and workers’ organizations, international non-government organizations, civil society organizations, miners’ groups and their communities, and ASGM supply chain actors joined the forum.

Countries represented include Colombia, Congo, Cote d’ Ivoire, France, Ghana, Guyana, Indonesia, Italy, Mali, Mongolia, Nigeria, Philippines, Thailand, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States.

“Jobs in artisanal and small-scale gold mines are often linked to poor working conditions, with limited rights and access to social protection, without a voice and freedom to join unions. Miners risk their safety and health even without stable income to lift their families out of poverty. Of great concern are children working in these mines, which is one of the worst forms of child labour,” said Khalid Hassan, Director of the ILO Country Office for the Philippines.

ILO estimates in 2011 revealed that 19,000 children work in 45 artisanal and small-scale gold mines in the Philippines. Children can be found inside mining tunnels or on surface collecting gold and hauling sacks of ore or smelting gold.

The sector is associated with many labour issues such as hazardous working conditions that have led to work-related injuries, diseases and deaths. Child labour is also present in different mining stages. Evidence from various ILO surveys and research studies show that mining is by far the most hazardous sector for

children with respect to fatal injuries.

“We should continue to zero-in on families as they need to know the risks involved in sending their children away for work. Child labour is not the solution to the households’ economic problems, rather, it creates longterm problems. This forum is a step forward to be more responsive and to provide us with the necessary tools to address child labour and other labour issues in ASGM,” said Secretary Silvestre Bello III of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) .

The 3-day forum held on 28 to 30 May 2019 in Manila provided a venue to exchange knowledge, technologies, practices and challenges to put forward concrete solutions to address child labour and poor working conditions. The forum also looked at the impact of the sector on people and the environment.

“We are well aware of negative impacts of ASGM on people and the environment. Most of the operations in the sector continue to work without permits and mining practices are not covered by government regulation. This is mainly the reason why two of the worst issues in the mining sector – child labour and working conditions – are common in ASGM,” said Secretary Roy Cimatu of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) .

Implemented under the ILO CARING Gold Mining Project (Convening Actors to Reduce child labour and Improve working conditions in ASGM) , which is funded by the United States Department of Labor (USDOL) , the forum linked issues of child labour and working conditions to decent work and compliance with Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work for workers, families and communities in the sector.

Scarborough Community Legal Services is a community legal clinic that provides free legal services to low income residents of Scarborough in the areas of housing, income security, employment, and immigration law. The clinic also provides free legal education and information to our community members and partners. FOCUS What is your Child doing this Summer? Going to Summer School?

Asks Joe Kingsley Eyiah, OCT, Brookview Middle School, Toronto-Canada June every year is graduation month for most students at the Elementary and High School levels.

The following month often sees some students including elementary and high school graduates going back to school with other students.

Such school is called SUMMER SCHOOL. Before I come back to the topic of summer school, let me use this opportunity to congratulate all students, especially Ghanaian Canadian students who made us proud by successfully graduating from elementary, high schools, colleges and universities this year.

Summer school normally begins in early July for elementary students in Ontario Province of Canada. It begins for college and university students in the province during May/June. Every year summer school is organized for students.

Is it necessary for some students to go to school during the time that the school year has ended and schools are officially

each year as a remedial program. Many of the students who attend this program are recommended to it by their teachers with the support of their parents.

Summer School at College/University Level: on holidays? What benefits does summer school offer students and parents? Is summer school the best option for students instead of holidays? I will try to address the above questions in this brief discourse on summer school.

Let me say what summer school isn’t to begin with. Summer school is not the place or time to “baby-sit” students. It is not fun time for students and teachers who participate in it. Neither is it “meet-me-there” opportunity for buddies!

What is Summer School?

However, summer school courses for college and university students are designed as credit program to assist students to acquire credits to either shorten the length of their academic programs or catch up with some credits they need before the next academic year.

Unfortunately, not all courses are available on the summer school programs.

Students need to check with their faculties for the available courses.

It is gratifying to note that some organizations such as the Ghanaian Canadian Association of Ontario (GCAO) and the Hope 2 Hope among others and some Ghanaian Churches have

taken upon themselves to run summer workshops/ camps for Ghanaian children living in the Greater Toronto Area from July to August.

These organizations and churches do not want our children watching TV or playing video games 24/7 or roaming the Malls during the summer. They are therefore providing great learning cum fun opportunities for our children to get the needed head start towards their next school grades at a reasonable cost!

The Truth about Summer School: Whatever level you look at the academic summer school program, one fact stands tall. It is very intensive. The workload is heavy and it requires the student’s prompt attention to completing and submitting all assignments on time.

Teachers at summer school have very short time within which to teach the prescribed curriculum, assess students’ performance and report on students’ achievement.

Ghanaian Canadian Social Services Network promotes financial literacy within the community

There is nothing more devastating than retiring and not having enough to live on or losing a loved and having to borrow in order to cover funeral costs. But that is a reality that members of our community face on a regular basis because of poor financial planning.

To address this issue and also ensure that community members have the information, tools and knowledge to put their financial house in order, the Ghanaian Canadian Social Services Network (GCSSN), a nonprofit association of professionals in the community and social services sector, in collaboration with the Apostles’ Continuation Church organized a seminar on financial planning and literacy on May 19 at 10 Belfield Road.

Under the theme “Eight (8) Steps to Financial Independence and Freedom”, the event featured two seasoned financial planners, Ms Josephine Nimoh and Mr. Adolphus Lokko as speakers. Topics discussed included safeguarding what is important through life insurance, maximizing tax returns, conducting financial needs analysis and applying the six principles of effective financial planning. Speaking on the issue of sound financial planning, Ms. Nimoh, the first speaker said the key to financial success is to have

a steady source of income that is protected against unforeseen circumstances through mechanisms such as insurance. Building on Ms. Nimoh’s observations, Mr. Lokko the second speaker, also identified six principles for financial success including paying ‘yourself’. He called on community members to talk to financial professionals just as they currently do with lawyers and doctors given the importance of having healthy finances. He also entreated members of the community to plan for their retirement here in Canada and not just in Ghana as situations could change. There were a number of audience questions following the presentations. Most of them centred on life insurance, RRSPs, Tax Free Savings and pros and cons of saving for retirement on Ghana versus Canada. Wrapping up the occasion, Mr. Yaw Akenten, president of the Ghanaian Canadian Social Services Network thanked the leadership and members of the Apostles’ Continuation Church for their support. He also entreated members of the Ghanaian Canadian community to take advantage of the vast array of expertise and professionals at their disposal and avail themselves of his organization’s services by sending them a message at info@gcssn.org or visiting their website at www.gcssn.org.

Summer school therefore places a heavy responsibility on students to work hard in the short time frame to achieve goals set for the program. There is the need for students and teachers involved with the program to take summer school serious.

Students should be focused on the program.

They should therefore seek out those who are helpful not distractive.

Watch their behavior and attitude towards learning! Respect their teachers and other students. Be prepared to lend a helping hand to other students who need help. It will be better to stay away from summer jobs during the time that one is enrolled in summer school.

To our summer school teachers, teaching is still teaching!

Remember, teaching is not just about impacting knowledge. It is also about changing lives. So endeavor to make a difference in the lives of students you teach this summer.

Coach Kwesi Appiah must get it right this time

No doubt, this year’s record of increased participation in the AFCON had influenced keen competition across Africa, as the likes of (South Africa, Burundi, Tanzania, Mauritania, and Kenya) all left out a pretty impression in this year’s qualifying campaign.

For Cleveland Dromo Oddoye, the likes of E.K Afarane, C.K Gyamfi, Fred Osam–Doudu, Sam Ardey, and sir Cecil Jones Attuquayefio, have all left some mark of greatness, contributing to the rich history of Ghana football.

Today, one can easily recall huge successes such as, Ghana’s 1st place triumph at the 1978, “African Cup of Nations” under Osam Doudo. The dominance of 1963, 1965 and in 1982 on the African continent under C.K Gyamfi and many more.

Who else can forget Egypt 2009, Ghana’s famous under 20 world cup win, under Coach Sellas Tetteh? And so on, the list of many achievements hold till present day. Indeed their incredible touch to the beautiful Ghanaian game cannot be overlooked.

Among all, one indigenous coach that has survived under huge criticism, undergone media scrutiny, and on record most celebrated as the only Ghanaian coach to have qualified the Black Stars, is James Kwesi Appiah.

The former Ghanaian skipper is famously hailed for his tactical antics and tremendous scouting abilities. His foresight and offering of opportunities has really helped Ghana in discovering many fantastic talents today.

No doubts, his recent contribution to Ghana’s transitional system proves to be a record, one can hold in high esteem, an area his predecessor, “Avram Grant” always struggled with. However, what still remains illfated is Ghana’s tittle drought for the past 37 years. Despite incredible progress seen in the team , Ghana’s struggle for a silver wear still remains as one of the most anticipated gist to break in African Football today.

With the dream to rekindle her glorious days still remaining elusive, Ghana has lost two (2) finals in (2010 & 2015) since Libya 1992.

Ontario’s government has introduced legislation to cap public sector wage increases at an average of one per cent annually for the next three years.

If passed, the bill will “ensure that increases in public sector compensation reflect the fiscal situation of the province,” he told the legislature earlier Wednesday.

The PCs expect to launch a website and host consultations about the plan over the summer.

The legislation comes after the government hinted at the possibility of a wage freeze earlier this spring.

Devastated Nunavut family buries wrong baby after mistake by hospital A family from Nunavut say they were given the wrong body by a Winnipeg hospital after the death of their baby, and had to hold a second funeral once they received the right remains.

Alice Kinak and her partner, Tony Alagalak, went to the health centre in Arviat, Nunavut, on April 19 around 7 p.m. Kinak, who was more than eight months pregnant, was feeling sick.

The small health centre in the community with a population of about 2,600 was not equipped to help them.

“That’s when things got really bad,” said Alagalak. “Our son had nothing to get monitored by; there was no one experienced to give birth in town, and the worst part is we had to wait for the medevac plane to come in.”

Alagalak said they waited more than four hours for the aircraft to arrive; it took another three hours before Kinak landed in Winnipeg, where she was taken to St. Boniface Hospital.

The baby boy died in the hospital, though it’s not clear when or how.

My goodness, that’s such a huge mistake.​​​​​- Hattie Alagalak, grandmother Kinak returned to Arviat alone, mourning her son. The hospital sent the baby’s body to the community soon after.

“It was our baby, they said it was our baby that came in,” Alagalak said.

“So we buried him here in Arviat with a funeral and everything with my family.”

Officials arrive in Arviat On May 15, officials from St. Boniface arrived in the community and the family was called to the health centre.

Alagalak said the family didn’t know what the meeting was about.

His grandmother, Hattie Alagalak, was asked to help deliver the news.

“St. Boniface Hospital has an obligation to respect the confidentiality and privacy of all our patients and families,” the email said. “Our practice is to reach out to them directly about the specifics of their situation and their health information.”

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority deferred questions to the hospital, saying it would not comment on the mix-up.

Family wants explanation The body of the couple’s son eventually arrived in Arviat, and another burial was held. But the family is still waiting for answers.

“I would really like to know who made that mistake and why it happened,” Tony Alagalak said. “I don’t think that should ever happen. It was like putting an extra thousand pounds on my shoulders knowing that our son was misplaced.”

He said the nurses in Arviat did everything they could, but he wants to see better health services in the Nunavut community.

“I just hope more people speak up. We deserve better as Inuit, as our people.

We’re Canadians too. We don’t deserve any less than other Canadians, right?”

Foreign Students working in Canada while studying in Canada and after graduating from Colleges in Canada Canada has in place three main foreign student work programs. These are: offcampus work program; coop work program and postgraduation work program.

To be eligible to work under any of the three programs, a foreign student must meet certain requirements.

With the exception of full-time students attending universities or colleges and who have obtained employment offers on the campuses of the colleges or universities where they are registered full-time, foreign students generally require work permits to work in Canada in the course of studying.However, this requirement has been relaxed and since June 1, 2014, students have been allowed to work off campus without work permits.

Off-campus work program allows students to work for up to 20 hours during regular academic sessions and work full-time during scheduled breaks. To be eligible to work under this program, the student must possess a valid student permit; must be a full-time student; must be enrolled at a designated learning institution at the post-secondary level

or, in Quebec, a vocational program at the secondary level, and must be studying in an academic, vocational or professional training program that leads to a degree, diploma or certificate that is at least six months in duration.

An off-campus worker should apply for social insurance number with his study permit which should contain the employment clause. The foreign national should stop work on the day he ceases to meet the eligibility criteria such as no longer being a full-time student during an academic session.

Co-op work programs are meant for studies that require work experience as a component of the program of studies. To be eligible for a work permit under a co-op

or internship program, the applicant must have a valid study permit and the intended employment must be an essential component of the program of study in Canada.

The employment must be certified by a letter from a responsible academic official of the institution as a part of the academic, vocational or professional training program offered by the designated learning institution and should not constitute more than 50 percent of the total program of study.

at least eight months in Canada at a public post-secondary institution or a private postsecondary institution that operates under the same rules and regulations as a public institution or a private institution that is authorized by provincial law to confer degrees but that applies only if the applicant is enrolled in one of the programs of study leading to a degree as authorized by the province and not in any other programs of study offered by the private institution.

The post-graduation work permit program is designed to provide graduating students with Canadian work experience. The program may permit students to work in Canada for a maximum period of three years after graduation but the work permit cannot be valid longer than the length of time the student studied in Canada.

A graduate in this program must apply for a work permit within 90 days of receiving written confirmation such as a transcript or an official letter from the institution indicating that the person has met the requirements for completing the academic program. The applicant or student must have completed and passed the program of study and received

To be eligible for the postgraduation work permit program, the applicant must be 18 years of age or older at the time of application.

The applicant must also have graduated from a specific program of full-time study of

notification that he is eligible to obtain his degree, diploma or certificate and must have a valid study permit at the time of applying for the work permit.

The post-graduation work permit may not be longer than the length of the applicant’s program of study and will not extend beyond three years regardless of the length of the applicant’s program of study. Acquisition of this work experience enhances the success of the student’s subsequent application for permanent residence.

BANKRUPTCY AFTER DIVORCE

So, what happens if one of the “exes” does file for bankruptcy as a result of financial hardship following the breakdown of the relationship?

The break-up of a marriage or common-law relationship has certain financial ramifications for both parties, including the splitting of assets and the creation of equalization payments (support).

However, both can be financially

Bankruptcy basically results in the liquidation of property (houses, cars, RRSPs, etc.) in order to pay off a portion of the outstanding debt (mortgages, loans, credit cards, taxes owing, etc.).

In the event of a bankruptcy following a divorce, the

equalization payment also becomes an outstanding debt and the spouse being “supported” will have to settle for a reduced payment according to the bankruptcy payment agreement. However, spousal support does get preferred status in the bankruptcy’s payment distribution schedule, meaning it takes priority over other creditors such as credit cards and the amount outstanding is still payable after the claimant is discharged from bankruptcy.

So, in a nutshell, say John is supposed to pay Jane $1,000 a month for support and owes her $15,000 in back support.

The trustee rules that over the course of his bankruptcy, John

will pay back the $12,000 owed in the year prior to bankruptcy in addition to a percentage on the outstanding $3,000, and when he is discharged from bankruptcy, John still has to pay

In the case of the former, provincial law may prevent the sale of the home due to the resultant financial hardship created for the child(ren)’s guardian, disruption of the child’s life, the availability of suitable alternative housing in the area of residence, the employability of the supported spouse (especially if he/she is required to stay at home to care for dependents), and even because of the history of the spouse and children in the family home.

Although preferable and perhaps an easier avenue toward asset liquidation, attempting to facilitate a sale between exspouses is dependent on the spouse taking possession of the house being able to secure suitable financing to purchase it. Again, that depends on the employability and financial stability of the spouse.

Either way, bankruptcy does make a difficult time more difficult for both parties in the separation but in the end, the bankrupt individual has a fresh start financially, and the supported spouse receives regular support payments (as opposed to the deadbeat’s “not at all”). GCAO to organize Summer Modern Batik Couture for Ghanaian Youth in Toronto

The Ghanaian Canadian Association of Ontario (GCAO) in collaboration with the Modern Batik Couture is organizing a textile and design program for youth (aged between 12 years and 18 years) in the Toronto Ghanaian community this summer.

The renowned Modern Batik artist, Mr. David Kibuuka is travelling all the way from Uganda in Africa to come and impart the traditional cum modern skills of creating Batik designs to our youth. He will be ably assisted by Lorena Santin Andrade, a Toronto based artist who has been working with some Toronto students.

The summer program will run from July 3 to August 2, 2019 with a two-week break from July 15 to July 26 to allow for digital printing

of designs, and resume on July 29 to see their printed designed fabrics in into pillow cases and cushions.

Classes will be held from 10am to 3pm for the first two weeks; and from 12 noon to 5pm after the two-week break.

There will be no cost to the participants. The program is fully funded by the City of Toronto and the GCAO. Space for the summer workshop is also generously donated by the Apostles Continuation Church at 10 Belfield Road in Etobicoke-Toronto.

Registration of participants is open till June 28. It is strictly first come first served so hurry!

Mid-Year Motivation – What I Wish I Knew/Started Earlier In Life By the time you’d be reading this, it’ll be the end of May or beginning of June 2019. Either way, it’s the middle of the year – meaning half of the year is gone! Whether you set goals or not, the time is gone! Whether or not you achieved your goals, six months have passed and cannot be retrieved! However, even if you did set goals and have not been able to achieve them as you planned, at least I believe the process of achieve those goals have helped you become a better person. Ii know I’m growing due to how I’ve been thinking of time lately. I hope to share some insights and valuable nuggets with you if you stay with me to the end of this short piece.

There are some vital things or call them skills that I have developed lately and continue to develop – that I wish I had learned earlier in my life.

Better late than never – right!

Especially for my younger friends, please this is a great time to keep your eyes, mind, and heart on, and learn them to the best of your ability. You have time now and it can’t be at a better time than now.

The best time to learn this was yesterday, and the next best time is now. The clock is ticking and time is running out for everyone whether or not you’re living your dream life; whether or not you’re suffering or enjoying; whether or not you’re conscious of it; whether or not you’re utilizing it right; whether or not you’re working; whether or not you’re sleeping. The time is the same for everyone – young or old; rich or poor; red or yellow skinned; first or last class in society; smart or foolish. The rich have 24 hours and the poor have 24 hours. The CEO has 24 hours and the cleaner has 24 hours. What we choose to do with the 24 hours we each have is what matters and what helps transform our lives. Now we can start being conscious of our time and redeem it for more profitable use. We can deliberately filter how we spend or utilize our time so that it’s more valuable to us. We should discriminate where we go and the people we hang out with; what we watch on TV; social-media; etc. All these consciously and/ or unconsciously eat up our time and our life. The time will never be just right to make things right – so start now.

Remember, as we celebrate our birthday, we gradually near our end of life and grave. At the end of the day, can you say that you lived a fulfilling life? Well, let me dive in to what I have to share with you.

Stay healthy and fit – health is non-negotiable. I can’t stress this enough. For me, the next most important thing after life and hope, is health. You need your health to continue to live on this earth if you’re blessed with life. If you have life and your health is terrible, my dear, you don’t need me or someone who has experienced terrible health issues to tell you that it’s unpleasant. Value your health.

Treasure your health. It is golden – it is royal. You can’t borrow anyone’s health. You can’t buy anyone’s health. You can only have and use yours.

Someone may be able to help you out when you’re not in a great health state – but it can only be for a time. Don’t put junk in your body. Your body is too precious. You only have one body and it is this body that takes you everywhere and gets you to do all the great as well as terrible things you do. Hold your health in high esteem.

Take care of your health EVERYDAY. Watch what you eat; what you drink; what you inhale. STOP SMOKING!!!

Those big giant smoke companies are making money at the expense of your health but the manufactures may not even be smoking what they’re making for you to smoke. The world needs you and your gifts so please stop smoking. Take back your money from those companies and take back your health! J Read and write more – the more we read the more knowledge we acquire, and the more knowledge we acquire and take action the better we’d using or spending our time and so the better our lives will be. Although some of the information we acquire through reading may be irrelevant, for the most part we’ll find useful knowledge when we decide to go out there to make our lives and the lives of others better and so we read. Filter what you read and focus on. There are millions of books out there that we can acquire knowledge through – don’t forget the ultimate Book, the Bible. People have gone through literally hell and have learned valuable lessons – these people have written books that we can read and learn great experiences to improve our lives; these lessons can save us years of struggle and pain and aches and waste, if we choose and decide to sacrifice and read. Reading can save us years of toil because the people who have written those books have shared their experiences.

Although we may have our own experiences, learning from the experiences of others who have been there will be

more than helpful to make our lives easier and better if we choose to read. Read books on health and wellness, finances, work and career, relationships and marriage, prayer and faith, parenting and family, sales and marketing, friendships, and whatever you can think of that interests you. Reading broadens your horizon and challenges you challenge yourself and the status quo. I wish I knew this earlier and had started this earlier in my life.

Teach your children to read and like reading – it’s one of the best things you can do for them, parents. With this comes writing. Writing brings clarity to the mind. I have come to realize that journaling clears our emotions (or at least my emotions). It helps me to write down my experiences and thoughts and use them identify learned lessons and future goals. When I write down my everyday experiences I am able to identify my mistakes and learning curves, my wow moments, as well as what I need to do away with or what I need to improve upon.

Journaling empowers me and enables me look into previous days, months and even years and know what I did and why I did them. I take motivation from them. When I go back into my journal and see what I was able to do few months back it helps me determine that I am very able to do similar tasks or challenges at hand – that is very motivating and empowering for me.

Practice Public Speaking – we all do public speaking every now and then without knowing.

The more conscious we are of it and make the effort to do better, the more efficient we’ll do and expand our network and worth. Sometimes, people are uncomfortable when they find themselves in small or large groups when they have to speak and make conversations. This is because they haven’t made the effort ot enhance their public speaking skills. The earlier we train ourselves with this skills the better our lives will get.

We’ll not be embarrassed to meet new people and speak up when the need arises. Last year, I joined my community’s Toastmasters Club to help me enhance this skills and I have been doing so much better since then. I recommend this to you. I met new people and made some great new friends. I was extremely grateful when I heard seasoned public speakers share their stories of how they were next to nothing and very nervous when it comes to public speaking – and how they have drastically improved over a year or two. I strongly believe

public speaking is a very great skill that everyone should have and it is easier to acquire at a younger age.

Stay Teachable – growth is one of my key values in life.

If you’re not growing, over time you’re get rusty. When we humble ourselves to learn and continue to grow, being teachable is a key component.

An open minded person is teachable and constantly broadening their horizons in life. When we assess ourselves and identify our strengths and weakness, we shouldn’t only do this for job interviews. When we take this further and make the effort to get better with our strengths and weakness, we’re beginning to be teachable – we’re open to learn and make improvements in our lives; to seek help. Other ways that I get teachable is to accept that others’ opinions may be better than mine – and you have to accept this fact, too. You cannot always be right. I like to take notes and/or make notes.

I also fully take responsibility for my failures and errors, and I seek learnings from them. I prefer constructive feedback to criticism. However, when I get criticized, l learn from them and focus on solutions.

I like reading and I read to seek answers and take actions based on the new knowledge from the books I read to improve my life, as well as share the new knowledge with others to help make their lives better. Life’s situations and circumstances are always teaching us all kinds of lessons, if we choose to pay attention to them. We can develop the teach-ability and learning skill – ask questions and have a curious attitude. At the end of the day, it comes down to two key questions to ask ourselves: what are we willing to give up to learn something new.

In order to learn new things we also have to be willing to unlearn some old things we know that are unhelpful. A careful assessment of ourselves

will help reveal these. Take useless stuff out of yourself and replace them by being teachable and learning some great new things. The second key question is do we have that willingness to spend money and time to learn new and useful things to help improve or advance our lives? I was craving a sandwich the other day and I went in to quickly buy one. The kind I wanted was $12+ tax. I was hungry but I could wait for a few hours until I got back home to eat a healthy meal. After a few minutes with the cashier and not being able to decide the guy said ‘ma’am, just choose one’. That blew my mind away and I responded ‘I don’t just do things, sir – I can spend this money better. Do you know how many eBooks $12 can buy’. He just looked at me. With that I walked away. A lot of us ‘just’ buy things. We don’t think and we don’t take time to understand what we do – we just do them. There are certainly some things that we should ‘just’ do, but it’s definitely not everything. So, ask yourself if you are willing to give up watching TV or even your favorite TV show in order to learn a new skill or even a new language – or something that you know is definitely bringing value and meaning to your life. Query yourself and see if you are one of those who indiscriminately watch TV just to waste their previous time. A lot of people watch TV carelessly. They don’t have any good reason for watching that program or show they may be watching at any point in time.

They just don’t know why they’re watching it but they are. It’s funny but serious. They don’t know or haven’t come to the realization of how precious their lives and time are and so they just waste them. Don’t be, or better still, stop being one of those people. It’s not too late to divert your path to the right one. Better late than never!

Value friendships – Friendships can span from our spouses,

to children to parents and siblings, to co-workers and team members, to neighbor, and even to strangers whom we meet and spend a short time with. Good or great friends are very important to our mental health and the quality of our lives. True friendships are not cheap – you’ve got to invest resources in them to make them great. When you’re able to get one, please treasure it.

Developing true friendship may sound like a lot of work, the joy of experiencing life with an open heart and sharing it with a true friend are worth it – besides, you will live longer and be in good company along the way. I’ve heard it said that to live and love are inseparable.

The lady that I called my truest friend passed away about five years ago. She was my best friend, and I haven’t met anyone like her since her demise. What am I saying? What stands out for me as the number one quality in valuable friendships is humility – perhaps the most important thing to look for in a friend is their ability to say ‘I’m sorry’ when they have wronged you. We all make mistakes and no friendship can survive over time without apologies when someone has been hurt.

Learn to be respectful of your friends and be humble. I had a friend (let’s call her Sally) who embarrassed me in public by screaming and yelling at me that I had done foolishly by not having my phone close by me to pick up her call and give her directions to the venue where my best friend (who has now passed) was having her engagement. After she struggled to find her way to the venue she was upset with me because she had called me many times and I couldn’t answer. I had given her the address and expected her to manage and locate it because I was very busy with organizing the whole engagement even and helping my best friend dress up. Joint Renewal of marriage vows at Living Word Assembly of God

In a unique change of pace, the congregation at Living Word Assembly of God celebrated love and marriage, on Sunday May 12th 2019. Nine couples in the congregation renewed their marriage vows in a joint ceremony in front of the church. The event was an initiative proposed by Living Word’s senior leadership, as they noticed the church had a number of members who have been married for 25 years or more. The event was a beautiful ceremony coinciding with the church’s annual Mother’s Day celebration. Pastor Isaac DeGraft Takyi also called for the children of each couple to stand behind them as the vows were renewed. After the renewal of vows Rev. Joseph Osei Amoah was called upon to bless the couples. There was truly feeling of gratitude, appreciation and blessings in the room. As the couples kiss each other the church erupted in thunderous ovation.

MPP Rakocevic joins Broookview School to plant 300 Trees in the Black Creek Ravine From Joe Kingsley Eyiah, Toronto

The Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Humber River-Black Creek in Toronto, Hon. Tom Rakocevic was at hand on May 31, 2019 to help about 50 students from Broookview Middle School to plant 300 new trees in the Black Creek Ravine.

The restoration project in the Ravine was organized by the EcoSchools Team of Broookview Middle School in collaboration with the Toronto Region Conservation Authority (TRCA). The tree planting project was a great opportunity offered the students at Brookview Middle School to give back and to do something for the community and the environment.

The students led by their teachers, Mr. Eyiah, Ms. Droulias, Ms. Ofori and, teacher-coach Ms Ayih were taken through safety precautions and preparation by the staff of TRCA present at the Ravine before they engaged in the tree planting project.

At 11 am, Hon. Tom Rakocevic joined the students during the tree planting.

He took time to address the students and encouraged them to take good care of the environment. He said, “the small trees you are planting today will grow to become big protectors of the Ravine and give life to ecology. Soon you will enjoy the singing of birds in the trees.”

Rawlings finally admits his crimes on the Constitution of Ghana By: Prof. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB We all know that the person who has single-handedly disrupted the political process and stability of the nation state of Ghana since the country achieved nationhood is a man named Jerry John Rawlings. After he and his rag-tag band of lawless, undisciplined junior-ranked military officers shot their way to power on June 4th, 1979, they unleashed on the nation the most brutal human rights abuses never seen in the annals of the country’s history. Under their short-lived Armed Forces Revolutionary Council “government” that lasted only three months, Rawlings and his band terrorized the country like hell. Businesses and properties, including buildings, were either confiscated and shared among the soldiers and their cohorts, or were destroyed for no apparent reason than hatred of anyone wealthy or self-sufficient.

Apart from the seizer and destruction of private property, countless, but unknown number of people were tortured, killed, imprisoned without trial or due process, and/ or disappeared, many of whom have never being heard of, forty years on, this year. At the time Rawlings and his blood-thirstygroup masquerading under a “government” called the AFRC seized power on June 4th 1979, preparations for Parliamentary and Presidential elections were well under way in Ghana.

Although they allowed the elections to go ahead on June 18th and 25th, 1979, they were held under heightened sense and cloud of fear.

Dr. Hilla Liman won the Presidential elections against Mr. Victor Owusu while the People’s National Party (PNP) led

by Dr. Liman won the Parliamentary elections.

Rawlings reluctantly handed over power to Dr. Hilla Liman and his PNP government on September 23rd, 1979 to usher in the Third Republic of Ghana.

The euphoria that greeted the final hand-over of political power to a civilian government was however short-lived. Rawlings again shot his way to power through another coup d’etat only 27 months into the life of the Liman government.

He was to rule the country again under another brutal military dictatorship called the Provisional National Defence Council for another ten years.

demonstrations from within the country led by fearless patriots, including the late History Professor AduBoahene, and the current President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, who defied the brutalities of Rawlings and his henchmen to mount internal pressures, and other pressures from the international community, Rawlings finally gave in to cries and demands for return to constitutional rule. He got a Constituent Assembly created to draft a new Constitution for the country. The Fourth Republican Constitution was promulgated in May 1992 for elections to be held in December of that year.

Just before the Constitution was promulgated, Rawlings got a “Transitional Provisions” section smuggled and inserted into the Constitution. We are told that the Transitional provisions were drafted secretly by Rawlings’ henchmen including Dr. Obed Asamoah and Kofi Awonor. For his reward, Obed Asamoah was made the Attorney General and Minister of Justice (what an irony), and later as Ghana’s Foreign Minister under Jerry Rawlings. The Transitional Provisions, inserted at the back of the Constitution, contained thirty-seven (37) articles, the first thirty-three of which seem harmless on the surface and just by a cursory reading.

However, Sections 34 to 37 contain very dangerous and frightening texts which were written, agreed to, and approved by people who can only be described as having very evil intensions.

The articles, starting from Section 34 to 37 were clearly designed to cover the evil deeds bordering on excessive human rights abuses, of the practitioners of the AFRC and the PNDC governments, all led by Jerry John Rawlings.

They show clearly that the drafters of these articles had something to fear and hide from their earlier actions under those two regimes referred to above.

example, Section clearly provides

total immunity from responsibility to the practitioners of the two regimes for any actions, brutalities and other diabolical acts committed during their tenure in public service. It says that “no member of the PNDC, its Secretary and appointees shall be held liable either jointly or severally for any act or omission during the administration of the PNDC. Sub-section 2 of Section 34 has even stronger and frightening language. It states that “it is unlawful for any court or tribunal to entertain any action or take any decision or make any order or grant any remedy or relief in any proceedings instituted against the Government of Ghana or any person action for the government of Ghana whether before or after the coming into force of this Constitution”, (clearly referring to the practitioners/agents etc. of the PNDC and AFRC).

The rest of the sub-sections of this article are even more frightening. And to protect their loot and stolen properties, including buildings, vehicles, lands and businesses, they inserted Section 35 titled “preservation of confiscation and penalties imposed by the AFRC and PNDC” which clearly gives them immunity from prosecution for these illegal acts and to protect the stolen properties. And to drive the final nail into the coffin of decency, due process and fairness, they inserted Section 37 which forbids any subsequent Parliament of Ghana from amending any sections of these Transitional Provisions.

Jerry John Rawlings and his NDC party that he formed went on to “win” (fair or foul) the elections that were held under this Constitution in December 1992. He thus took office in January 1993 as a Constitutional President and ruled the country again for another eight years with this very imperfect Constitution with the smuggled Transitional Provisions. The perpetrators of all the brutalities that Ghanaians have endured under the AFRC and PNDC have lived free in Ghana for the past forty years with no consequences for their evil actions perpetrated in the name of “government”.

All of a sudden and out of nowhere, the chief architect of these brutal disruptions of the political and Constitutional stability of Ghana, Jerry John Rawlings, burst out on Tuesday June 4th, 2019 with a call for the abolition of the very Transitional Provisions that he himself got smuggled

into the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, which shielded him and his gangsters for the past forty years. On Tuesday June 4th, 2019, during his annual ritual celebration of his June 4th mutiny, Jerry John Rawlings told a rally of his sympathizers at Nungua, a suburb of Accra thatthere are many clauses in Ghana’s Constitution “that do not serve our interest” and called for an urgent establishment of a constituent assembly to review them.

He knows very well that it is not going to be easy to repeal or amend the Constitution in a few years, if it ever will happen. So he is trying to seize an undeserved moral high ground by calling for a repeal or amendment of the very Transitional Provisions he personally got inserted into the Ghana Constitution.

Rawlings, please save us all this hypocrisy and let the current morallyupright persons running our government guide this country out of the doldrums into which you and your gangsters plunged it.

How to Keep Your Liver Healthy According to health experts, People who drink a few cups of coffee a day may be less likely to get liver diseases including cancer and scarring (fibrosis, cirrhosis).

It might even slow those conditions in some people who have them. Filtered, instant, and espresso all seem to work.

Still, helpful as coffee may be, it can’t take the place of a balanced diet, a healthy weight, plenty of water, and regular exercise for a healthy liver.

How to keep your liver healthy Don’t Overdo Acetaminophen It’s in more than 600 meds, including many cold and flu drugs. Most adults shouldn’t get more than 4,000 milligrams per day. More could hurt your liver. Try not to take more than one product with acetaminophen per day, and never take more than what the package instructions recommend.

Practice Safe Sex You want to protect yourself and your partner from conditions that can spread through sex, including many that could eventually hurt your liver. One, hepatitis C, infects it directly and can do serious harm over time. Most people don’t notice they have it until many years later when much of the damage has been done. Your doctor can test to see if you have it.

Take Your Meds Right Though acetaminophen is the most common medication that can harm your liver, other meds can do that, too -- especially if you don’t take them as directed. It may also depend on your genes, other prescriptions, and your food. Speak to your doctor if you’re tired, nauseous, or itchy or you notice yellowish skin or eyes (jaundice) after you start a new medicine. Statins for high cholesterol and certain antibiotics (amoxicillin, clindamycin, erythromycin) are some examples.

Check on Your Supplements They cause almost a quarter of all liver damage. Herbs like borage, comfrey, groomwell, and coltsfoot have “pyrrolizidine alkaloids” that can gum up the tiny blood vessels inside the organ, either over time or all at once (if you take a lot). Other herbs like Atractylis gummifera, Camellia sinensis, celandine, chaparral, germander, and pennyroyal oil (used in tea) can also cause liver problems.

Skip Herbal Liver Remedies Common liver remedies like milk thistle, turmeric, and astragalus don’t have much research behind them.

Colloidal silver, sometimes used (with little scientific support) for hepatitis C, can cause irreversible side effects like turning your skin blue. Tell your doctor about all pills, herbs, and supplements you take. First, to check on the safety of each item, but also because of how they might interact with each other.

Eat the Rainbow That means fruits and vegetables from all the colors of the rainbow, which helps ensure you get all the nutrients and fiber you need. Avoid refined carbs like doughnuts and white bread in favor of whole-grain rice, breads, and cereals. A bit of meat, dairy, and fat

can also help. But not too much, and look for “good” (monounsaturated, polyunsaturated) fats from seeds, nuts, fish, and vegetable oils.

Exercise Regularly It can help keep your BMI at the right level, which could protect against nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. But even if your BMI doesn’t change, exercise is likely to help. Why? Because it improves how your insulin works and burns triglycerides, a type of fat in your blood.

Avoid Toxins These might be chemicals in cleaning products, spray cans, insecticides, and other household items. They could hurt cells in your liver if you touch, absorb, or breathe in too much of them. You can protect yourself if you wear a mask and goggles and open the windows when you use them.

Watch Out for Needle Risks If you or someone you know has ever injected illegal drugs, you should get tested for hepatitis C, which can spread through blood. The same is true if you’ve had an accidental needle stick.

A blood test can let you know if you’ve ever had the hepatitis C virus.

Check for Liver Damage It’s especially important for your doctor to do this if you drink heavily or have a family history of liver disease.

Early treatment helps, and you might not have symptoms at first. You should also get tested if you’re more likely to have hepatitis C. This includes anyone who: Had a blood transfusion before 1992 Ever used illegal drugs Is on dialysis Has HIV Was stuck by an infected needle Got a tattoo from an unregulated place Was born between 1945 and 1965 Get Vaccinated You can get it for hepatitis A and hepatitis B, but not for hepatitis C. A lot of kids have been vaccinated, but many adults haven’t. Talk to your doctor about whether you need it. It might be especially important if your immune system is weak or your liver already shows some damage.

Research says people who have sex once a month or less get heart disease more often than those who have it twice a week or so. Part of the reason could be that you get a bit more exercise and are less likely to be anxious or depressed.

But it could also be that if you have more sex, you’re physically and mentally healthier in the first place.

That’s about equal to a brisk walk. And you use a bit more oxygen too -- about the same as digging in the garden or walking down the stairs.

That may not seem like much, but it starts to add up over the long term. And because sex can improve your mental health, you might be more likely to do other types of exercise like the neighborhood kickball team, hiking, or housework.

You might sleep less Without sex, you’ll miss out on the hormones that promote restful sleep, like prolactin and oxytocin. Women get an estrogen boost that helps even more.

The reverse is true, too: If you decide you want to start having sex again, a good night’s sleep is just the thing to keep you feeling frisky.

Aches and pains hang around Sex can be a good way to take your mind off of any aches and pains you have. But it does more than that. Orgasm causes your body to release endorphins and other hormones that can help ease head, back, and leg aches. They may help arthritis pain and menstrual cramps, too.

You could have sexual problems later It may seem odd, but “use it or lose it” may apply here. For women at menopause, vaginal tissue can get thin, shrink, and dry out without regular intercourse.

That can make sex painful and weaken your desire.

And some research says men who have sex less than once a week are twice as likely to have erectile dysfunction (ED) as those who have it weekly.

Your blood pressure might rise Sex seems to help keep your blood pressure down. That makes sense when you consider what it does: It adds a bit of aerobic and musclebuilding exercise, and it can ease anxiety and make you feel better.

Both of those can help keep your numbers where they need to be.

This column is devoted to answering your questions on health and discusions of diseases which are common among the African Canadians.

Weight loss: Ready to change your habits? job stress, illness or financial worries, you might not want to add the challenge of overhauling your eating and exercise habits.

Instead, consider giving your life a chance to calm down before you launch your weight-loss program.

Many disease states are affected or brought on by being overweight or obese. Many times we all decide that we need to lose weight and sometimes we plunge into a weight loss program. In this article, we will review some questions that you need to answer before you decide to lose weight.

Are you motivated to lose weight?

Is your weight-loss goal realistic?

Answer these questions and more to make sure you’re ready to start a weight-loss program — and know what steps to take if you aren’t quite there.

Your weight-loss success depends in large part on your readiness to take on the challenge. If you jump in before you’re ready, your weight-loss plan might buckle under the first challenge.

Use these questions to assess your weight-loss readiness.

1. Are you motivated to make long-term lifestyle changes?

Successful weight loss depends on permanent lifestyle changes, such as eating healthy foods and including physical activity in your daily routine. That could represent a significant departure from your current lifestyle.

Be honest.

3. Do you have a realistic picture of how much weight you’ll lose and how quickly?

Knowing that you need to make changes in your life and actually doing it are two different things.

You might need to overhaul your diet so that you’re eating more whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products, for example. You’ll also need to find time for physical activity, ideally at least 30 to 45 minutes — or more — nearly every day of the week.

Whether your motivation for undertaking these changes is better health, improved appearance or simply feeling better about yourself, find your motivation and focus on it.

2. Have you addressed the big distractions in your life?

If you’re dealing with major life events, such as marital problems,

Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is a lifelong process. Start by making sure your weight-loss goal is safe and realistic — such as losing 10 percent of your current weight.

Then aim to lose 1 to 2 pounds (0.5 to 1 kilogram) a week until you reach your goal. This means burning 500 to 1,000 calories more than you consume each day — through diet, exercise or both.

You might lose weight more quickly if you change your habits significantly. Be careful, though.

Radical changes that aren’t sustainable aren’t likely to be effective over the long term.

4. Have you resolved any emotional issues connected to your weight?

Emotions and food are often intertwined.

Anger, stress, grief and boredom can trigger emotional eating. If you have

Evangelism is not merely something to be done when we think it’s convenient; waiting until the perfect moment means never getting anything done at all. He summed up his sermon by given 3 points, a. We should know the Lord whom we have come to believed as Jesus said to the women if you know the one who is speaking to you, you would have asked Him to give you the living water which when you drink you will never thirst again. b.

Jesus showed loved to the woman at the well without discrimination. c.

After his sermon, he led the congregation for an hour of fervent prayer in interceding for our community, political leaders for both Ghana and Canada, churches, the youth, marriages.

Some of our pastors and men were there at hand to support us. Funds was raised in support a sister in Ghana (Ms Felicia Gyamfi) to help her furnish her unfinished building.

Deacon Owusu Afriyie gave the benediction. Rev. Mrs. Eleanor Adu-Anane was the MC.

If you have a significant amount of weight to lose, you might benefit from medically supervised weight loss with a team of health professionals — such as a dietitian, a therapist or an obesity specialist.

You might not be ready to embark on a weight-loss program right now - and that’s OK. Explore what’s holding you back and face those obstacles. Consider seeking help from your doctor or another professional, such as a certified wellness coach, to help you work through these issues. Then re-evaluate your readiness for weight loss so that you can get started on the path to a healthier weight.

To prepare for the challenges, identify any emotional issues related to food. Talk to your doctor or a mental health provider, if needed.

5. Do you have support and accountability?

Any weight-loss program can be difficult. You might face moments of temptation or become disheartened. Having someone in your corner to offer encouragement can help. If you don’t have friends or loved ones you can rely on for positive help, consider joining a weight-loss support group.

6. Have you embraced the weight-loss challenge?

If you don’t have a positive attitude about losing weight, you might not be ready — and if you dread what lies ahead, you might be more likely to find excuses to veer off course.

Instead, try to embrace the vision of your new lifestyle and remain positive. Focus on how good you’ll feel when you’re more active or when you weigh less.

Picture yourself celebrating every success along the way, whether it’s enjoying a new food, finishing another exercise session or losing your first few pounds.

Your results: Ready or not?

Think about your responses to the questions above:

If you couldn’t answer all of the questions with a simple yes or no but you feel generally positive about most of your answers and you’re upbeat about a weight-loss program, consider starting now.

You might never have definitive answers in life. Don’t let that rob you of a chance to achieve your weight-loss goals.

Mid-Year Motivation – What I Wish I Knew/ Started Earlier In Life cont’d from pg. 32 Sally was coming then I see her seated among the guests and run to her to hug her. She loudly screams and yells at me that I was foolish and she had struggled to find her way to the venue because she couldn’t reach me by phone to have me guide her. I quietly walked away in shame and embarrassment to continue with my role and didn’t give any indication to my best friend of what had happened.

The even went on perfectly and after some guests starting leaving I told my best friend I had to leave immediately due to an emergency – sally was still there and didn’t want to be around. My best friend noticed there was something wrong because she knew I was going to be with her the whole day and even pack the gifts to her home. After much convincing, right in the presence of Sally, I told her the incident with Sally and she was disappointed too. Sally never apologized about her action and behavior. Up until today Sally has never apologized for that action. We talk and say hi about twice a year but certainly not friends. Friends bring love and joy and respect, but those who suck these virtues out of us cannot be called friends. Great friendships give us the opportunity to love, to learn about ourselves, to mature as human beings, and to open up to the full experience of life.

Reduction in Vehicle Import Duties Will HamperGhana’s Climate Change Efforts

In April 2019, the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr. MahamuduBawumia announced, among other things, a 30% reduction in import duties for vehicles to the excitement of many, particularly vehicle importers (see: https:// w w w. g r a p h i c . c o m . g h / b u s i n e s s / business-news/ghana-news-importduties-go-down-today-govt-reducesbenchmark-values-vehicle-30others-50.html). All other things being equal, this government policywill increaseimportation of vehicles to add to the existing droves in a country withpoor public transport systems.

Given thatpetroleum products – gasoline and diesel – are the main sources of energy for vehicles in Ghana and contribute to climate emissions and ultimately climate change, I argue that this government policy will hinderthe country’s climate change efforts in the transport sector.

Globally, the transport sector has been identified as the fastest growing contributor to climate emissions, accounting for 23% of global carbonemissionsin 2010 (World Health Organization). In Ghana, it was estimated that climate emissions spiked by 20% between 1990 and 2011, with energy being the second largest emitter (the first is forest sector), contributing 25% of the total. Out of this 25%, “39% is due to transportation, 29% to other fuel combustion, and 19% to electricity and heat”(USAID 2016).

In fact, in Ghana’s Third National Communication Report submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2015, it is stated that “Between 2010 and 2040, emissions were projected to increase from 5.76 MtCO2e to 43.14MtCO2e. Out of the 2040 emissions of 43.14 MtCO2e, passenger transport will account for the majority (93%) while the rest (7%) will come from freight transport. Within the transportation category, emissions from road transport were projected to account for more than 80% of total emissions…” (page 97).

The above statistics and projections are astounding enough to prompt any environmentally-conscious country to invest in the needed infrastructure,

facilities, and systems to help reduce climate emissions in the transport sector, and not to add to the fleet of vehicles. Besides, sustainable mass transportation and sustainable energy security are two priority areas (out of seven) in Ghana’s Nationally Determined Contribution– a tracking and reporting system on climate change. There is need for investment in effective and efficient public transport systemsto lessen the desire and demand for cars for personal use and reduceclimateemissions.

Wouldn’t it be environmentally-sound to see members of parliament, for instance, shuttling to and from work in buses instead ofdriving luxurious, fuel-consuming personal vehicles?

How much air pollution and climate emissions will such an action prevent?

Do the math! To this end, initiatives such as the Ayalolo Bus model needs to be back on the table and replicated in other areas of the country, particularly in urban centres, which bear the brunt of environmental pollution and unsightly vehicular traffic.

With the proper road infrastructure and education, biking can be part of our everyday commute – a sustainable and environmentally-friendlyform of transportationthat has zero impact on climate emissions and climate change. Afterall, Ghana is a tropical country with mostly good weather.

Another lifestyle change that needs to be encouraged is carpooling, which falls under the broader theme

of collaborative consumption (shared use of a goods or services by a group).

Carpooling, if well-implemented, can reduce people’s desires to purchase personal vehicles for use. All over the world, attitudes and behaviours about personal ownership of cars are being re-evaluated, as well as improving public transport systems and finding green sources of energy for use. As such, policy in the transport sector in Ghana should move in this direction rather than encouraging increasing fleet of vehicles with its dire environmental consequences.

I am aware that by reducing import duties on vehicles, the Ghanaian economy is likely to benefit through revenues and taxes generated. However, given the country’s current and unfavourable climate emissions projections in the transport sector, massive investment is needed to help reduce climate emissions, rather than policies such as reducing import duties on vehicles that will increase the number of cars imported, increase the consumption of gasoline and diesel, and consequently result in increasing climate emissions.

This government policy will therefore worsen Ghana’s efforts at fighting climate change in the transport sector, particularly because there are no plans to mitigate their resultant climate emissions. The environment should not be sacrificed for the economy, because the very foundationof the economy is the environment, which needs to be protected.

Ghana Methodist Church of Toronto celebrates 20th Anniversary and Dedication of a New Chapel

By Jonathan Baah Annobil, Toronto The Ghana Methodist Church of Toronto under the Host Pastor, Very Rev. Joseph Owusu Atuahene, held a joint ceremony of Chapel Dedication and celebration of 20th anniversary of the Church in Toronto from May 17th to 19th 2019. The Theme was: EBENEZER, “ Thus far the Lord hath brought us” ( 1Sam. 7:12)

Early on during the Church service, the Church history was read by Dr. Alex Asamoah. It is known that Mrs. Agnes Summers (popularly known as “Makola”) owner of a GhanaianCanadian Grocery Store in Toronto was the first to start the Ghana Methodist Church in Toronto with the support of few other Ghanaians.

The 3-day event started on Friday 17th with Meetings, seminars and all-night services. The Dinner/Dance event was held on Saturday with the anniversary cake-cutting. The climax of the program was Sunday’s official opening and dedication of the chapel by the Most Rev. Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo, Presiding Bishop, The Methodist Church of Ghana. He was assisted by the Host Supt. Minister Very Rev. Joseph Owusu Atuahene (Synod Secretary) and other invited Bishops from Ghana Methodist churches around North America and Ghana.

Dr. Nana La-Kumi, a renowned Ghanaian Canadian Dentist and community leader was the Special Guest of Honor who gave the KeyNote address for the Fundraiser part of the service. In his speech, Dr. LaKumi admonished the congregation to give money generously in support of God’s work and they shall be blessed abundantly.

There were other dignitaries in attendance including the Ghana Consul General in Toronto, Mr. Thomas Seshie, the Clergy, Community Leaders and Nananom.

Year of Return - Site Attractions FESTIVALS IN GHANA

Aboakyer (Deer Hunt) Festival Aboakyer derives from an ancient rite where sacrifices are traditionally offered to the god Otu in order to remove evil and predict a good harvest. It is said that the people from the ancient Western Sudan Empire migrated south, and settled in Simpa (what is now Winneba). To celebrate this, the priest instructed them on behalf or their god, to offer a young member of the Royal Family every year as a sacrifice. The people appealed this, and the substitution of a wild cat was accepted as a sacrificial offering, provided it was caught alive and beheaded before the god. However, so many lives were lost in attempting to capture the wild cat, that they appealed a second time to Penkyi Otu, named after the place the people settled, and he accepted the offering of a young bushbuck.

Homowo Festival This harvest festival is celebrated by the Ga people from the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.

It begins with the sowing of millet by the traditional priests in May. After this, thirty-day ban on drumming is imposed on the land by the priests.

The festival is highlighted at varying times by different quarters of the Ga tribe. The Gamashie group of the tribe will celebrate theirs' a little earlier than the La group.

Homowo recounts the migration of the Gas and reveals their agricultural success in their new settlement. According to Ga oral tradition, a severe famine broke out among the people during their migration to present day Accra. They were inspired by the famine to embark on massive food production exercises which eventually yielded them bumper harvest.

Their hunger ended and with great joy they "hooted at hunger" this is the meaning of the word HOMOWO.

Akwasidae Festival The Akwasidae Festival is celebrated by the Ashanti people and chiefs in Ashanti, as well as the Ashanti diaspora. The festival is celebrated on a Sunday, once every six weeks. The Akwasidae Festival is next only in importance to The National Day celebrations. It marks the seasons and the timings for various agricultural activities

Damba Festival The Damba festival is celebrated by the chiefs and peoples of Nalerigu, Tamale, and Wa in the Northern Region and Upper West Region of Ghana.[1] The name is damba in Dagbani, Damma in Mampruli and Jingbenti in Waali. The festival is celebrated in the Dagomba lunar month of Damba, corresponding to the third month of the Islamic calendar, Rabia al-Awwal. Damba is celebrated to mark the birth and naming of Muhammad, but the actual content of the celebration is a glorification of the chieftaincy, not specific Islamic motifs.

Odwira Festival The Odwira festival is celebrated by the chiefs and peoples of Fanteakwa, AkropongAkuapim, Aburi, Larteh and Mamfi all in the Eastern Region. This is celebrated annually in the month of September. The festival celebrates a historic victory over the Ashanti in 1826. It is also celebrated by the people of Jamestown in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana as a result of their long association with the Akans through intermarriages.The Akuapem Odwira festival was initiated by the 19th Okuapimhene of Akropong, Nana Addo Dankwa 1 (1811-1835) and was first celebrated in October 1826.

Akwambo Festival The Akwambo festival is celebrated by the chiefs and peoples of Agona Nyakrom and Agona Swedru in the Central region of Ghana. The festival is celebrated in the month of August every year to remind the present generation of how their ancestors migrated from the ancient town of Efutuobir around 1650 under Gyan Kodwo of Agona Swedru. The paths that lead to the traditional dwelling places and ancient palaces are cleared during the celebration of the festival.

Ghanaian Presbyterian Church Fit4Christ Event

By Alice Afram On Saturday May 18th, 2019, the Ghanaian Presbyterian Church of Toronto hosted ‘Fit for Christ’, a health and wellness event for all members and their friends in commemoration of the church’s upcoming 25th Anniversary. Led by the Presby Football Club, members danced their hearts out to Gospel Zumba, competed in an Amazing Race challenge, and took a walk around the block to encourage daily exercise living. The City of Toronto’s Health Unit, as well

as, Home and Community care representatives educated members on healthy lifestyle choices, conducted blood pressure testing, and provided resources on community programs in and around the area for members and their loved ones.

In the end, a delicious pita and fruit buffet lunch was provided to all for a job well done. As the old saying goes; Health is Wealth, thus as a community it is our responsibility to encourage one another to stay to Fit for Christ!

The Ghana Consulate of Toronto on 18th May, 2019 organized a Luncheon Reception in honor of Professor Wisdom Tettey, a new Vice President and Principal of the University of Toronto, Scarborough.

The event was attended by a cross section of members of the Ghanaian-Canadian community, the Clergy, community leaders and Nananom.

The Ghana High Commissioner H.E. Ayikoi- Otto presented a plaque on behave of the Ghana community in Canada to Professor Wisdom Tettey. In his acceptance Professor Tettey thanked the community for coming together in his honor. He said: “This appointment represents

all the people and a recognition of the University’s commitment to diversity. To him, it is an obligation that

he takes serious”. It was an afternoon of interaction with Music and great Ghanaian Dishes and Drinks.

“But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul”. Deuteronomy 4:29 (NIV)

Why should I seek the Lord?

Why should you seek the Lord?

Why should we seek the Lord?

Well, besides the promise that those who seek the Lord will lack no good thing (Psalm 34:10), there are a number of other benefits to following God’s command to seek Him (Hosea 10:12). Seeking the Lord is of great benefit tous.

However, we shouldn’t seek the Lord just to get the benefits, but knowing the benefits can motivate us, keep us focused and help us know when we’re on the right track.

This month we will continue with our quest and secrets to seeking God with all our heart, all our mind, all our soul and

all our strength by looking at the WHY. For the past two months we have been looking at the basis in both Testaments for seeking God, and I believe it has been of great benefit to you. This article will seek to emphasise why we should seek God;the great benefits in seeking God. I trust that we will take up the challenge in faith to seek God for the right biblical reasons.

Seeking God, among many benefits, will give you Clarity, Direction, Favour, Focus, Fulfilment, Grace, Guidance, Joy, Kindness, Love, Mercy, Power, His Presence, Provision, Refreshment, Restoration,

Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the LORD understand it fully. Proverbs 28:5 (NIV)

2. We will not worry again about anything and anybody that everyone and everybody worries about respectively.

So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’

For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as

A Ghanaian-Canadian appointed the new vice-president and principal of the University of Toronto Scarborough Professor Wisdom Tettey, a political scientist who is a leading researcher on the African diaspora, politics and media, has been appointed the new vicepresident and principal of the University of Toronto Scarborough.

Tettey, who is currently the dean of arts and sciences at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus, will begin a five-year term on July 1, U of T announced today.

The chairman of Ghana Diaspora Committee (Canada) and Publisher/ Editor of the versatile Ghanaian Newspaper presented a statement of purpose. He stated that the summit is an event recognizing and celebrating the immense contributions to nationbuilding by Ghanaian Diasporans.

He added that the event will not only highlight past contributions but will also focus on present contributions as well. He continued that the Year of Return is not just for the AfricanAmericans, African-Canadians, African-Europeans, African-Chinese or our brothers and sisters from the Caribbean, but it is also for all Ghanaians in the Disapora who need to come home. The summit is designed to get Ghanaians domiciled overseas to come to Ghana to discuss matters that is affecting them and how best they can help to contribute to national development.

The keynote speaker was H.E. AyikoiOtoo, Ghana High Commissioner to Canada. He stated that his main message is for the youthof the 1st generation diasporansto be aware of the problems facing Africa and Ghana.

Since his tenure of office in Canada, most of the schools he has visited have no African studies. “In Africa, we have a lot out there, we have our own way of life from womb to tomb. Outdooring, rites of passage-puberty, marriage and celebration of life when one dies. Our family system is unique and encompass uncles, aunties, nieces, nephews.” On the impending summit, he stated that the organizers have been admonished to correct the mistakes of 2 years ago to enable participants share their ideas and not to be lectured. he hoped that

the summit will be fashioned in such a way that there will be sharing of ideas .

As we do not have control on anything we produce, the introduction of the 1 District 1 Factory will enable us to add value to our resources before exporting them or for homeconsumption. H.E. Otoo stated that we should start talking about Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement, how to remove tariffs and trade amongst ourselves, then we can determine our own prices.

Nadia MusahAdongo, Deputy Director for Diaspora Affairs, Office of the President was on hand and gave an overview of the summit. She brought greetings from President Nana Addo and Director AkwasiAwuaAbabio.

She spoke about the changes made to the impending summit including the setting up of different sections. She appealed to participants to check the website and check the section of their interest before embarking to Accra.

The diaspora policy is being revamped to be inclusive to all. She stated that the office is for all disaporans and that all are welcome for it is there to help ease the challenges diasporans face when in Ghana. The President of GCAO Emmanuel Duodu also gave his views of Diasporans in Canada. He emphasized that the creationof the right environment for the youth will help them flourish. The skills and education acquired by our youth should be tapped for the betterment of the community as a whole.

Mr. Seth Oteng of Youth Bridge Foundation Ghana spoke about the African Diaspora Youth Intergenerational Dialogue II during the launching. he said the classical marginalization of the youth should be debunked. Building the connection of our youth cant thrive if it is not anchored with the youth. there is a disconnect between parents and the youth which should be repaired.

The MC for the event was Ms Lucy Crentsil. The youth then took the opportunity to have a short meeting with Seth Oteng.

“I am thrilled by the appointment of Professor Wisdom Tettey as vicepresident and principal of University of Toronto Scarborough,” said Meric Gertler, president of the University of Toronto. “As a distinguished scholar and gifted administrator, he will build on UTSC’s accomplishments working in partnership with the community, helping to foster innovation and prosperity in the Toronto region and raising the profile of U of T Scarborough both here and internationally.”

The author of several publications on Africa – including on the political economy of globalization and information technology; media, politics and civic engagement; African higher education; and the African diaspora – Tettey has looked at addressing the brain drain from the continent. In 2005, he was the lead investigator on a World Bank study on faculty retention in African universities and, last year, he received a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) award to look at human rights issues for people affected with albinism.

At the Okanagan campus, Tettey led the development of a fiveyear strategic plan and related initiatives to expand undergraduate research opportunities, enhance Indigenization of the curriculum, promote experiential

learning opportunities and create new graduate programs.

“His experience handling complex, innovative, and forward-looking initiatives makes him perfectly suited to lead U of T Scarborough,” said Provost Cheryl Regehr.

Tettey hopes to tap into experiences from UBC Okanagan as he works with faculty and staff to develop U of T Scarborough’s priorities for the next five years.

That includes continuing to build connections with the community around U of T Scarborough, building on the campus’s history of community engagement and partnerships.

“I look forward to connecting further with the community to create opportunities, but also for the community to see the value of that partnership, as we give back to the community,” he said.

He hopes to be able to use his own international experiences to encourage a global focus among students at U of T Scarborough. As an undergraduate student at the University of Ghana studying political science and Russian, Tettey spent his third year in Moscow at the height of Mikhail Gorbachev’s perestroika and glasnost programs. Soon after, he came to Canada as an international student to pursue a master’s degree in political science.

At U of T Scarborough, the campus’s student body is made up of people from 115 different countries who actively participate in study abroad programs.

Tettey sees huge potential to build on

that diversity – creating more opportunities for domestic and foreign students to collaborate, as well as expanding international opportunities for students.

“Being a former international student gives me a unique perspective on that experience,” he said. “I have a good understanding of what it’s like to come from somewhere and try to integrate, but I also have an appreciation of intercultural competencies that are required in this world.

“As we train our students for the world, we need to make sure that they are imbued with the qualities and competencies that are needed to effectively engage the world.”

He also wants to focus on creating further collaborations between U of T Scarborough and the other two campuses – U of T Mississauga and the downtown Toronto campus – and building research opportunities across disciplines.

Mostly, he sees his role as that of a facilitator.

“I am here to facilitate the realization of aspirations and objectives that have been set by the U of T Scarborough community,” he said.

“Part of what I want to be able to contribute will be a commitment to a positive, healthy working environment for faculty and staff, a healthy learning environment for students, and focusing on a collaboration across the tri campuses.

“The stronger each of us can be as a campus, the stronger we will be overall as one university.”

Ghana Athletics: Joseph Amoah breaks 24-year old National Record in 200m Sprinter Joseph Amoah has broken the National 200m record on Day 1 of the NCAA Division I Championships in Austin,Texas.

by 0.007 seconds but his Personal Best of 10.01 (wind +1.3) got him through to finals and has qualified him for the Tokyo Olympics.

Amoah smashed the Ghana 200m national record with a Personal Best of 20.08 seconds (wind+2.0), breaking the 24 year old record set in 1995 by Emmanuel Tuffour.

This is now Amoah’s second qualification for the 2020 Olympics after he also qualified in the 200m event last month.

Tuffour’s record stood at 20.15 seconds (Altitude).

In the 100m, it was a close call for Joseph as he narrowly missed the auto-qualifier The Ghanaian who is the reigning WWE World title holder Kofi Kingston has paid a visit to the President of the Republic of Ghana His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Kingston arrived in Ghana during the course of the week and presented his WWE award to the Ghanaian President along with his mother.
