Multi-Direction Evacuation Flights for stranded Ghanaian-Canadians from Accra Ghana to Canada and Canada to Ghana executed successfully By Emmanuel Ayiku and Jonathan Baah Annobil, Toronto, ON

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic resulting in lockdowns all over the world by countries, there has been four times that stranded Ghanaian-Canadians have been evacuated. The first and second evacuations were done with Global Affairs Canada and the Canadian Embassy in Accra. The Canadian Government provided “transportation loans” to the evacuees who needed and applied for them to the tune of $5000 per person. The passenger composition of the first flight was a mixture of Canadians with African Heritage and other Canadians. The second flight took off from Accra with 300 Ghanaian-Canadians who flew directly from Accra to

Toronto, a first by Ethiopian Airlines. As stated earlier it was a coordinated effort of Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Embassy in Accra, the Ghanaian-Canadian Association of Ontario (GCAO) and some individuals namely Michael Ansu and Lady Jane. Also Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister

Hon. Philip Champagne and his staff as well as Hon. Jean Yip, MP ScarboroughAgincourt and her staff played significant roles to make the evacuation flight possible. The flight landed in Toronto Pearson Airport on Tuesday May 19, 2020. This flight had connecting flights for those going beyond Toronto

We devote our Opinion Column in this edition to extend a special and warm welcome to our Ghanaian-Canadian Compatriots who got caught up in the global confusion, lockdowns and border closures as a result of the heightened fear of the spread of the raging global COVID-19 pandemic. The heightened global fear, hysteria and anxiety over the spread of the corona virus started around mid-March 2020 resulting in many, and almost every nation around the world instituting very harsh measures to restrict the movement of people into, within and outside their borders. Specifically, bans were imposed on travel in and out of most nations with closures of land, sea and air borders. These closures and travel restrictions began slowly in early March but the total bans began specifically from mid-March. The borders of the Land of Our Birth, Ghana were shut on Sunday March 16 and in the process and confusion, a number of people who had traveled to that country found themselves caught up in the resultant confusion and movement restrictions. There were some people who had completed whatever activities they traveled to the country to do and were scheduled to leave Ghana the very day the border closures were announced. Others were scheduled to have left in the following days or weeks. Initially, many people thought, and hoped that the closures and travel restrictions were going to last for a few days, and at worse, a few weeks. Days then turned into weeks and weeks into months. The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Akufo Addo initiated regular broadcasts to the nation with updates on government’s efforts at controlling the spread of the virus into the country and within the country. The regular updates also included health care efforts and services for those that had been unfortunately infected by the virus. People, that is travelers who had been caught up in the lockdowns and border closures kept hoping with heightened anticipation on the President’s regular broadcast updates, hoping against hope, that the borders will be opened so that they could leave the country to their places of habitual residences to continue with their lives.

EDITORIAL cont’d over five thousand dollars. The second one, also run by Ethiopian Airlines was relatively cheaper, costing between $3400 and $3700 arrived in Canada on May 19. We wish to commend the Governments of Canada and Ghana, through its diplomatic mission in Canada for facilitating the evacuation of these flights. The last of such flights that left Accra on Wednesday July 22 was a wholly-private organized affair which brought in nearly 300 stranded Ghanaian Canadians. In the midst of all these, the Ghanaian Government through its Ottawa Mission, led by His Excellency Ayikoi Otoo also organized two flights with Emirates to airlift and evacuate Ghanaians who had been stranded in Canada back to Ghana. We commend all those that assisted in facilitating all these evacuation flights, particularly the Ghanaian Association in Ontario for their efforts. We extend a warm welcome to our compatriots who have finally returned to Canada to the comfort of their homes, families and jobs and wish them a happy re-union.

Nana Akwasi Appiah Kubi passes away at 74 The sadden and sudden death of Nana Akwasi Appiah Kubi. He passed away on Monday 3rd August, 2020 in Toronto. He was 74 years. He is survived by wife, Mrs. Grace Appiah Kubi, 4 children and 6 grandchildren. He was an active community elder and Wiamoase Twafohene in the Sekyere South District in Ashanti Region of Ghana. He was also a founding member of Kumasi Youngsters Club, Toronto Chapter aka Hi Blood. He was a member of the Redemption Methodist Church, 955 Wilson Ave. North York. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Also caught in these confusion and uncertainties were other Ghanaians and other nationals who live in Ghana but had traveled outside the country before the border closures and travel bans were imposed. This group of persons were placed in very dire straits and consequences. Most of them had traveled outside Ghana for very short visits either for business, government official activities, medical checks or tourism. There were also students who had traveled outside for studies and other educational exchange programs who needed to return to Ghana…urgently. Many of these had limited access to resources for continuous living in the countries they had travel to, and got locked down. Around the world, some nations resorted to negotiations with Airlines and host countries to permit the organization, airlifting and evacuations of their stranded citizens in foreign countries. Such measures were also initiated by the Canadian and Ghanaian governments with formations of Evacuation Task Forces to organize and oversee these evacuation measures. They have not been easy for many of the victims of the lockdowns, border closures, and travel restrictions. Many Ghanaian-Canadians, some of whom had been in Ghana for between three to seven months scrambled to take advantage of these evacuation flights. As reported in this edition, the Canadian government, in collaboration with the GhanaianCanadian Association of Ontario and the Ghana Mission in Canada coordinated the organization of two of such flights from Ghana to Canada. The first of these evacuation flights, run by Ethiopian Airlines, was very expensive…costing

Jim Karygiannis gets his Toronto city council seat back once again By Staff Reporter, Toronto, ON

Toronto City Councilor, Jim Karygiannis, has once again been returned to his council seat — at least temporarily, by the Court of Appeal in Toronto. After a hearing Wednesday morning, the elected ScarboroughAgincourt representative was successful in convincing a judge to put a hold on an earlier decision that had turfed him from office. Justice Harvison Young’s decision Wednesday to grant Karygiannis a “stay” of decision by a panel of her Court of Appeal colleagues while he tries to convince Canada’s highest court to hear his case is the latest in a legal saga that has ping-ponged him in and out of his Ward 22 seat. Karygiannis was first ousted from office in November 2019 after the City Clerk informed him his financial statements filed as part of his 2018 election campaign showed he had overspent a strict campaign limit by nearly $26,000. That forfeiture is automatic as spelled out under the provincial laws governing municipal elections. Later that month, lawyers for Karygiannis successfully argued for a Superior Court judge to offer him relief from that forfeiture from office and he was returned to

Jim Karygiannis his seat at City Hall. But Adam Chaleff, a Toronto resident and fair elections advocate, launched an appeal at the Court of Appeal, arguing the lower court had erred in ruling the legislation allowed for Karygiannis to seek relief from forfeiture. In June, a panel of three judges unanimously agreed. While the written decision noted the penalties under the Municipal Elections Act were “harsh” in some cases, “forfeiture is clearly what the legislators intended.” Karygiannis is now seeking leave to appeal that decision to the Supreme Court of Canada — the last stop for this case if the highest court agrees to hear it. In the meantime, Karygiannis’ legal team requested the Court of Appeal suspend the earlier decision to allow him to resume his councillor duties pending a decision from the Supreme Court on whether they will accept the case.

The Supreme Court only hears a limited number of cases each year, with the mandate of the court to focus on issues of national and public importance. Council has delayed a decision about how to fill the vacant seat until their next meeting, which begins Sept. 30. In oral and written arguments, Karygiannis’ legal team argued both he and the public would suffer “irreparable harm” if he was not able to return to office for the next two months. They argued that at the time of Mr. Karygiannis’ forfeiture, there were numerous pressing issues unique to the community that required the active participation of Ward 22’s councillor. These “include, but not limited to the provision of health services and personal protective equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic, active and ongoing condominium development planning, the installation of traffic calming measures at all schools located in Ward 22. Others are the availability of affordable housing, traffic infrastructure measures, short-term rental occupancy issues, and the completion of TTC Line 4 through Scarborough,” the written submissions read.

Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders finally retires By Dr. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB

Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders retired on Friday July 31, 2020. He was honoured with a piping out ceremonyafter 38 years with the largest municipal police force in the country. Saunders thanked the City of Toronto in a tweet and the rest of the police service, saying, “Thank you to my Command team and to each of the sworn and civilian members of the Service. You made me proud every day. Both Mayor John Tory and Fire Chief Matthew Pegg offered their congratulations to Saunders. “A class act and someone I have been honoured to stand beside – both in public and behind the scenes. All the best Mark. May you have a long, healthy and happy retirement! Congratulations,” read Chief Pegg’s tweet.“I thank you for building up a safer, healthier and stronger community here in Toronto and wish you all the best in retirement,” tweeted Mayor Tory. When the outgoing Chief Cop was asked about the ongoing debate on defunding the Police Department or cuts to its $1-billion budget. His response reflects typical disdain for what he views as sloganeering in response to complex problems. He said that before considering cuts, “something realistic and effective would first have to be in place to deal with the 32,000 mental health-related service calls the Toronto force takes each year”.“That would free up our existing resources to be more focused on some of the more violent type of offences,” Saunders says. “We’re the only ones that are doing it the vast majority of time.” In a sit-down interview ahead of his retirement Friday, Saunders, 57, who is the first Black person to become Toronto’s top cop, says the service has diversified substantively since he joined in 1982 – 22 years after its first Black officer was hired. When I graduated from my class, I was the only Black person in the class at that time, so that kind of speaks to what the ratio looked like,” he says. “At the start, there was some comments that were made (but) my parents taught me that I should never be ashamed of who I am, so I would deal with it right then and there.” Since then, Saunders notes that the service has aggressively recruited visible minorities for years and has been recognized for its diversity, but surprisingly, he also says he does not know how many Black officers currently serve – the service hasn’t kept demographic data for some years now. Maybe a few hundred among the 5,400 sworn officers and 2,500 civilians, he suggests. Police racism and brutality against minorities have recently prompted

Former Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders protests and calls for defunding across North America after a Minneapolis police officer killed a Black man, George Floyd, in May. Toronto has not been immune.Saunders is frank: Racism exists in the service as it does elsewhere in society, so it’s logical that undercurrents flow through the organization. “There is no mystery to that; it’s built in everywhere,” Saunders says. “We hire from the world, so of course the answer is yes; there’s nothing unique about that. Tackling systemic racism requires a multi-faceted approach, he says. For one thing, police cameras are now ubiquitous in booking halls and cruisers, while officers wear microphones. Body cameras are the next step, he says. While politicians such as Mayor John Tory have praised his five-year tenure, Saunders has come under fire from members of the Black community. They maintain he failed to deal effectively with discriminatory policing and excessive force. He angered the activist group Black Lives Matter Toronto for failing to meet with them during 2016 protests outside headquarters over the police killing of Andrew Loku, 45, a mentally ill father of five. He also initially supported the practice of carding – officers randomly stopping people and recording their information. Minorities argued they were frequently targets of differential treatment. “We won’t miss him,” Syrus Marcus Ware, with Black Lives Matter Toronto, said. “Good riddance.”Saunders, however, insists his door was always open. More recently, he took a very public knee during an anti-racism protest. He said it was the right thing to do and that he was “totally in alignment” with the demonstrators’ views. Before becoming chief in 2015, Saunders spent years dealing with street gangs, combating drug trafficking, and working with the emergency task force. For now, he insists he has no plans beyond spending more time with his family.

A timeline of the WE Charity controversy and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s involvement By Dorcas Marfo, Toronto, ON

How the liberal government is facing criticism over WE Charity’s control of a 912million dollar student aid program

Those involved in the controversy include: Prime Minster Justin Trudeau, Sophie Trudeau (wife), Alexandre Trudeau (brother), Margaret Trudeau (mother), Trudeau’s office chief of staff: Katie Telford, Finance Minister Bill Morneau, WE Charity founders: Marc and Craig Kielburger, Finance Department official of Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) Michelle Kovacevic and senior official Rachel Wernick, Ethics commissioner Mario Dion of The House of Commons ethics committee, the standing committee on finance (FINA), the conservative party, the NDP party, Volunteer Canada, etc.

The Liberal government has been facing backlash from opposition parties after they announced in June that WE Charity would run the 912 million dollar student program: Canada Student Service Grant (CSSG). The backlash is based on Prime Minster Justin Trudeau’s failure to reveal his family’s longstanding ties with WE Charity and has appeared before The House of Commons ethics committee with investigation in the following areas: conflict of interest, ethics act, preferential treatment and failure to rescue from potential conflict of April 5: Finance Minister Bill Morneau and Prime Minister interest.

Justin Trudeau discuss over the phone how to help students with summer jobs and volunteer opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Finance Department officials were asked to consider options the following morning. April 7: Morneau’s office gets in contact with WE organization, among other groups, to get their input on possible programs. April 9: WE Charity voluntary sends an proposal for a youth entrepreneurship program to Morneau, Trudeau’s office, among other ministers. The proposal outlines a cost between $6 to $14 million with digital programming, $500 grants, and other “incentive funds” for 8,000 students.

April 18: Morneau’s officials bring up the idea of partnering with a non-profit or for-profit group to manage the program. Morneau said it was the first time he was involved in any talk about WE and thegrant program. April 22: Trudeau announces a $9-billion financial student aid which includes the outline of a volunteer program paying students up to $5,000, based on the number of hours they volunteer. WE sends Rachel Wernick, senior official at Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), an updated proposal to reflect the announcement. May 4: WE sends a third proposal to ESDC with more

details specific to the grant program. Finance Department official Michelle Kovacevic, who was working on the program, told the finance committee she received it May 7. May 22: Cabinet, including Trudeau and Morneau, approves WE’s administration of the program. May 23: The negotiation concerning an contribution agreement with WE begins, which would have paid up to $43.5 million in fees to WE. June 12: Marc Kielburger, WE co-founder, states in a video chat with youth leaders that he heard from Trudeau’s office about getting involved in the volunteer program the day after it was announced by the prime minister. He later states the contact came the week of April 26 from Wernick, and not the prime minister’s office. June 25: Trudeau reveals more details about the student aid initiative. WE administering the student-volunteer program, a $912-million program, also surfaces. The program’s purpose was to give students summer volunteer opportunities that were paid between $1,000 and $5,000 depending on the number of hours worked.

June 26: After facing questions about WE, Trudeau stated “As the public service dug into it, they came back with only one organization that was capable of networking and organizing and delivering this program on the scale that we needed it, and that was the WE program.” July 3: With speculation growing, WE and the Liberals announce they will be parting ways and the federal government will take control of the program. Ethics commissioner Mario Dion tells Conservative and NDP ethics critics in separate letters he will examine Trudeau’s role in the agreement because of the prime minister’s relations to WE. July 9: WE says it has paid Trudeau’s mother Margaret about $250,000 for speaking 28 times at WE-related events between 2016 and 2020. His brother, Alexandre, was paid $32,000 for eight events, and Trudeau’s wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau received $1,400 in 2012 for a one appearance. The organization says Trudeau himself has never been paid by the charity or its for-profit sector. Margaret, cont’d on pg. 27

FOCUS Going Back to School this Academic Year will Feel Different By Joe Kingsley Eyiah, OCT, Brookview Middle School, Toronto-Canada the school is “safer” than allowing the students to be in their various communities or home.

“Please, put on your face mask properly” the teacher instructs a student. “Sit in your own desk and stop moving around the classroom,” he pleads with another student. “Jayden pulled off my face mask,” complains Jamal. Interestingly, the above classroom drama is ‘predicted’ to take over the teaching and learning process in our schools (especially elementary schools) as teachers and students return to in-person classes this academic year. As a teacher, parent, community activist cum social commentator, I have been looking at the failures as well as the challenges facing countries in reopening schools safely for their students and teachers during this pandemic era. Around the world, countries are debating what to do about schools during the Covid-19 pandemic. In many places, they’ve been shut. In some they’ve reopened and shut again! For example, more than 100 schools and daycare centres have been closed again in Israel about three weeks after they reopened due to a spike in Covid-19 cases in the country. In Queensland, Australia two schools are closed and teacher anxiety levels are skyrocketing after three confirmed cases of Covid-19 rocked communities south of Brisbane as there is spike in the pandemic in that nation. According to Bloomberg (July 10, 2020), “Hong Kong Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung says high schools, primary schools and kindergartens will be closed again and start summer holiday earlier....” News reports have it further that elementary

The above paragraphs show the picture of how some countries around the world are handling their schools during this pandemic. Going back to school feel different! According to UNICEF, given the difficulty of the situation (the pandemic) and variation across the globe, countries are in different stages regarding how and when they plan to reopen schools. These decisions will usually be made by national or state governments, often in discussion with and middle schools across Hong Kong local authorities. They will have to are starting their summer vacations consider public health, the benefits and early amid an alarming resurgence of risks for education and other factors. COVID-19 cases. Canada as a country is considering Teachers and support staff at more reopening its schools for the 2020/2021 than 35 school districts across the academic year. However, the safe United States have recently staged reopening of schools has brought up protests over plans to resume in-class what feels like a string of unanswerable instruction while Covid-19 is surging questions, for parents, teachers and school boards alike. Most Canadian in many parts of the country. provinces have announced they’re In Denmark, which started reopening returning to full-time, in-person school schools in mid-April, classes are being for elementary kids without reducing held outside, such as in parks, as much class sizes at all. as possible.

How prepared are the two million or so students who attend-publicly funded schools in Ontario to adjust to a new reality, as Covid-19 safety measures will make for a new kind of learning experience? Are our vulnerable or at-risk students going to be taken full care of during the new kind of learning experience? Is the government prepared to provide more money for everything from custodians to personal protective equipment and smaller classes when schools reopen? As many parents are uncertain about how safe schools are for their children to return to, some parents have opted for homeschooling to mitigate the effect on their children’s education. But many are quickly realising that this is not as easy as they anticipated, despite receiving support from schools to facilitate homeschooling. The parents have to go to work and their best option is to send their children back to school. However, returning to school this academic year will feel different.

Final year students of Ghana’s Secondary Schools, Colleges and Universities are back to the classroom preparing for their examinations. Concerns have been raised about the final year students’ return to the classroom but the Chairman of Risk Communication and Social Mobilization Committee for Ghana’s Covid-19 Response Team, Dr. Dacosta Aboagye says, “Senior High School students who are currently preparing for their final exams are well secured in their various schools.” He claims

Ghana’s day of shame, lynching old ‘witch’ By Edmund Agbeko, Toronto There are many good things about Ghana for which we need to be rightly proud of. On any single day, many good things happen in Ghana. Sadly, however, bad things equally happen with some coming to the attention of the public. Such was the case of the unfortunate and shameful lynching of a 90- year old woman, Akua Denteh, alleged to be a witch. The lynching was instigated by a traditional priestess, perhaps more appropriately, traditional false priestess, who proclaimed grandma Denteh a witch. A young lady and an elderly woman are seen in the video directly molesting and beating her, with a crowd standing by and watching, whether in delightful amusement or in helpless amazement they are equally guilty. Expectedly, the whole nation has been thrown into anger and righteous indignation. It has elicited the response and sympathy of many Ghanaians, high and low, from different camps. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the First Lady have condemned the action, with the President describing it as a disfigurement of the image of Ghana. The former President and flag bearer for the opposition National Democratic Congress, Mr John Mahama, has equally criticised and condemned it. Both the Daily Graphic and the Ghanaian Times have dedicated their editorials to the lynching. The Ministry of Gender, Women and Social Protection (MoGWSP) has not been left out with human rights advocates and many more. The Gonja Traditional Council has openly, in a press release, condemned the act and the police have mounted a search for the perpetrators. God bless the video (wo)man and the video technology. You can imagine how many such lynches have gone unreported because nobody filmed them. There are witches’ camps in the country. This practice has a long history but the bottom line is that some people are believed to be witches and the only way the society thinks they can deal with them is to eliminate them, lynch them. There are, however, some overlords, I won’t call them witchdoctors, who claim to be able to exorcise the witchcraft. Thus, if you have kind family members, then they will take you there for ‘exorcism’. If they are not kind, or neighbours find you, they will want to lynch you, so you sneak out to the camps for refuge.

My little research indicates that, for every 20 persons believed to be possessing witchcraft, 19 may be women (witches), with only one being a man (wizard). Obviously an issue of vulnerability is at the bottom. The typical ‘witch’ is an elderly woman, childless or all her children having pre-deceased or abandoned her, may have some deformity of some sort, poor, no relatives around and perhaps lost all teeth. Whether witchcraft exists or not is a subject of a full length article and we cannot do justice to that here in this piece. However, it is largely a superstitious belief which does a lot of harm to us as a society and sends us to 400 years back to the history of Europe, where they had the papal malleus maleficarium (witches hammer) to hunt and lynch ‘witches’. For now let me say, if you believe in it, that is your entitlement, keep your belief. The 1992 Constitution guarantees freedom of belief, but do not attempt to influence other people’s belief and do not allow that belief to influence your dealing with others and lead to abuse of their human rights. In this regard I was sad when, a prominent journalist insisting that “the thing is real, it exists”. Imagine how many minds he polluted that day. If I may ask, since when have we suddenly realised this practice exists and is abhorrent? Witches’ camps dotted in the northern part of the country, why do they exist? They exist as a haven of refuge for suspected ‘witches’ otherwise they will be lynched and many have been lynched. The traditional rulers, the opinion leaders, the government appointees in those communities where the witches’ camps exist, why the inaction all along? If grandma Akua Denteh’s lynching becomes a reason for our waking up from our slumber to stop this practice, then she has died a martyr. If after a few days we go back to our old norm, then she has died in vain.

We will need to go further and uproot the practice. And I am not just talking about lynching, which is the ultimate abhorrent practice, but also the incarceration in the witches’ camp. We Interestingly, who are those need to disband and abolish they describe as witches? the witches’ camps and

that also means we need to uproot the belief in the need for the practice. There must be systematic education of the people in the traditional area, starting from the chiefs and other traditional rulers, then the spiritualists or prayer healers, pastors and traditional priests (sociologically a preferred term to fetish priests), then other opinion leaders including youth leaders, then the churches and mosques, market places and then the general public.

SIKAMAN-JOHNSON ACCOUNTING & TAX SERVICE

Thereafter we need education of the overlords and proprietors of the witches’ camps. Then the inmates, alleged witches. We may need to provide incentives or ‘compensation’ to the overlords in lieu of the services of the ‘witches’ (they use the capable ones among them for farming). Then be sure where these women will be taken to. Do not close down the camps all at a go, but systematically as we watch the effect and impact, to avoid an undesired boomerang effect. Then eventually close down all the camps with the people fully integrated into the society. Where there is going to be a challenge, create a sheltered home for the women and call it ‘aged peoples’ home,’ while we systematically look for means of eventually integrating them back into the society. The MoGWSP can spearhead this and bring together the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, the National House of Chiefs and the Mental Health Authority of the Ministry of Health to collaborate. She may be suffering from dementia which makes her forgetful and behave like a child, or depression which makes her confess to imaginary crimes, or schizophrenia which muddles her thinking and behaviour. This is a typically vulnerable person and is subject to the society venting their spleen in what sociologists consider a social strain gauge (as a measure of the strain on society to release its pressure or pent-up anger on a perceived enemy), or simply scape goatism for the society’s deflection of its weakness and challenges to blame the innocent individual — that after all it is not our fault that our society is, or I myself am not prospering, it is this little ugly old bitch. Let the lynching of Akua Denteh serve as a wakeup call to the government and people of Ghana. Let no one get back to sleep again. Let everyone remain vigilant until it is confirmed that Akua Denteh has become the last alleged witch to be murdered in Ghana.

IMMIGRATION AND SOCIAL ISSUES By: James A. Kwaateng, B.A. (Hons), LLB (Hons)

In-Canada Refugee Protection Claims versus Humanitarian and Compassionate Applications Under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA), refugee protection is conferred on a person when the person has been determined by the Refugee Board to be a Convention refugee or a person in need of protection or when the Minister allows an application for protection. A claim for refugee protection may be made in or outside Canada. Claims made inside Canada are made to an immigration officer, who, pursuant to the Act, shall, upon receipt of a claim, promptly determine whether the claim is eligible to be referred to the Refugee Protection Division (RPD) for further action on the claim. The Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) is allowed to grant protection on three different basis which are on convention refugee ground; on ground of danger of torture and, lastly, on ground of a risk to life or a risk of cruel and unusual treatment or punishment. The first ground – convention refugee ground - needs to relate to the person’s political opinion, race, religion, nationality or membership in a particular social group. The second and third grounds – a danger of

attributable to the general misconception that the requirements for refugee protection claims are the same as the requirements for humanitarian and compassionate (H&C) applications. The requirements are not the same.

torture and a risk to life or a risk of cruel and unusual treatment or punishment - are the basis for finding a claimant to be a person in need of protection. The convention grounds are dealt with in section 96 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) while the danger of torture grounds are dealt with in section 97(1)(a) of the Act and risk to life and of cruel and unusual treatment or punishment grounds are dealt with in section 97(1)(b) of the Act. Foreign nationals inside Canada, from time to time, submit applications for convention refugee or for refugee protection instead of humanitarian and compassionate applications and vice versa. This is partly

Section 25(1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (the Act) indicates the Minister may, on the Minister’s own initiative, examine the circumstances concerning a foreign national who is inadmissible – other than under section 34, 35 or 37 - or who does not meet the requirements of the Act and may grant the foreign national permanent resident status or an exception from any applicable criteria or obligations of the Act if the Minister is of the opinion that it is justified by humanitarian and compassionate considerations relating to the foreign national, taking into account the best interest of a child directly affected. Generally, a person is eligible to apply for permanent residence from within Canada only if he or she falls within the following classes: Spouse or Common-law partner; Live-

in caregiver; Protected person and Conventional refugees, and Temporary Resident Permit Holders. If you do not fall within any of the afore-mentioned categories, you need an exemption and this could be done through H&C applications under section 25(1) of the Act. Requests under section 25(1) of the Act for exemptions based on humanitarian and compassionate or public policy considerations accompany applications for permanent residence in Canada. When such applications are made inside Canada, the permanent resident applicants bear the onus of satisfying the decision-maker that their personal circumstances are such that the hardship of having to obtain a permanent resident visa from outside of Canada would be unusual and undeserved or disproportionate. Even though hardships can arise out of risk to life and risk of torture, cruel and unusual treatment, hardships are not necessarily risks and hardships per se do not fall within “risk category” that could necessitate refugee protection applications. Generally, factors relating to

a child’s emotional, social, cultural and physical welfare are taken into consideration when raised - and only when raised. Also, positive consideration may be warranted when the period of inability to leave Canada due to circumstances beyond the applicant’s control is of significant duration. Due consideration is also given in situations where there is evidence of a significant degree of establishment in Canada. The applicant must present as much convincing information as possible. The requirements and mode of assessment for H&C applications are substantially different from those of refugee protection claims. Seek professional advice when confronted with the task of choosing between the two.

Ford says he ‘won’t hesitate’ to close schools if COVID-19 cases surge during second wave Premier Doug Ford says he ‘won’t hesitate’ to shut down schools again if Ontario is hit with a second wave of COVID-19 and cases begin to surge. The premier, who answered a slew of questions at Queen’s Park this afternoon on the safety of his government’s backto-school plan, said he believes the province, along with medical advisers, have come up with a plan that is the envy of other provinces. “We have more guidelines in place than anyone in the entire country,” Ford said Wednesday. “I saw an article, which was very interesting, parents in B.C. were touting Ontario’s plan, saying ‘We want Ontario’s plan’...When I hear people from B.C. chanting that they want the Ontario plan, that is not bad.” But critics of Ford’s back-to-school strategy suggest that it does not go far enough to protect students and educators.

The province’s plan for September, which was released last week, will see all elementary school students returning to the classroom full-time with regular class sizes. Elementary students will be cohorted through the day, eating lunch together and going out for staggered recess in their classroom groups. High school students in larger cities, including municipalities in the GTA, will attend classes on alternating days with the same 15-pupil cohort for as many different classes as timetables allow. All students in Grades 4 to 12 must wear masks while indoors and younger students will be “encouraged” to wear face coverings. The province is providing school boards with an additional $309 million, including $80 million for hiring additional teachers and custodians as needed. But in a joint statement released last week, the province’s four

largest teachers’ unions criticized the plan, saying that it would take nearly 10 times that amount of money to hire adequate staff and obtain space to properly physically distance students. In a report issued by SickKids Hospital, experts suggested that physical distancing of at least one metre will be vitally important to keep children safe. Ministry officials have said while desks and tables in classrooms will be kept apart as much as possible, they could not guarantee two, or even one-metre distancing in all settings. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Ford asserted that his decision to keep elementary class sizes the same was not a financial one. “I’m not holding back on a penny here,” Ford said. “I’ve proven to the public it is not about dollars and cents.” He said his plan is based on advice from “the brightest minds in the

entire country.” “We could play armchair quarterback all day long everyone....I’m relying on the health and the science,” he added. “If it was up to us, we’d have five kids in a classroom. But in saying that, we have the lowest amount of kids in JK in the country. We have the lowest kids from Grade

1 to 3 in the country. We have... the equivalent of 15 kids for every teacher or ECE.” When asked if the province would consider providing boards with more money, Ford said he’d “never say never.” “This is the budget we’ve laid out.... I think we are pulling our weight,” he added.

“We have to read and react. If we get hit with a flu season, if we get hit with a second wave, then we react and we have a plan for Stage 2... I won’t hesitate if we have a second wave and it starts blowing up, to close the schools. Whatever it takes to protect the kids.” CP24

Multi-Direction Evacuation Flights for stranded Ghanaian-Canadians from Accra Ghana to Canada and Canada to Ghana executed successfully cont’d from pg. 1 Canada to Ghana on May 7 and 17 with coordinated efforts of the Ghana Government through its Evacuation Task Force and the Ghana Mission in Ottawa whose coordinated efforts for the flights were directed by H.E. Joseph Ayikoi Otoo, the Ghana High Commissioner to Canada. Information about the flight were posted on the Ghana Mission’s website and to the Ghanaian community across Canada for those interested to travel. The flights were by Emirate Airlines through Dubai. Passengers booked and paid their fares directly to Emirates. The condition for utilizing this flight was for passengers to show proof of booking and payment for 14 days quarantine stay at one of the Government-approved Hotels in Ghana in line with the COVID-19 safety protocols. The 3rd evacuation flight had no involvement of the Canadian Embassy in Accra. It was started by Alice and Sarah forming a whatsapp group with Mr. Appiah Kubi. Sarah coordinated emails and phone calls for the group. Mr. Emmanuel Duodu, President of the Ghana Canadian Association of Ontario was then contacted to liaise with the Canadian Government and Ethiopian Airlines which had agreed to evacuate the group and therefore needed permission for landing rights. In view of that The Ghana High Commissioner to Canada H.E. Joseph Ayikoi Otoo assisted with a request to the Ghana Government in Accra in respect of the charted Ethiopian Airlines for overland flight and landing clearance. Through H.E. Ayikoi Otoo’s coordinated efforts landing rights was granted for the Ethiopian Airlines for the flight. Everything went well with the group after lots of frustrations in preparation. The flight was cancelled a couple of times but due to the hard work of the organizers they overcame all the hurdles and the flight became possible. The Ethiopian Airlines flight which was scheduled to leave Accra at 10:30am, but there were hiccups and hitches at the Accra airport during

check-ins that caused delays and inconveniences to most of the group. It finally departed Accra at 2:30pm for the 11-hours nonstop flight to Toronto with about 300 Ghanaian-Canadianson board. Six people were not allowed to board the plane because their Canadian Permanent Resident (PR) Visashad expired. Unfortunately, there were 2 ladies who were also left behind due to extra luggage problems. The chattered Ethiopian Airlines flight arriving at 8:45 pm. Most of the passengers were exhausted on arrival in Toronto but attested to a smooth flight with good service and COVID-19 safety protocols enforced on board. Elder Appiah Kubi, one of the organizers now nicknamed “Moses”, due to his efforts in the evacuation of the stranded Ghanaian-Canadians from Accra, did not come on the previous flight because he deemed it too expensive and that motivated him and others in Ghana to come together to organize this flight. However he said; planning the evacuation flight of this caliber was not smooth sailing at all with some bumps along the way in the planning. Most of the evacuees have different stories why they were stranded in Ghana for so long, some told us they were running out of money and medications. They thanked the organizers for helping bring them back home. The president of the Ghanaian Canadian Association of Ontario (GCAO) Mr. Emmanuel Duodu welcomed the group back to Canada and thanked all the frontline leaders and officials who assisted in this evacuation flight namely Mrs. Sarah Awuah, Elder Appiah Kubi, Sister Alice, Michael Ansu, Juliet Opoku. The officials are H.E Joseph Ayikoi Otoo, Ghana High Commissioner to Canada, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs- Hon. Charles Owiredu and Ms. Nadia Musa(Diaspora Office, Accra), and a video presentation by Gilbert Odartei of Ghanalinx.

QUIET, “BE STILL” By: Stephen A.Quaye., Tronto, ON When least provoked do you fire tantrums and vituperations to render evil for evil, giving offenders “what they deserve?” Do you spew venom to demonstrate how dangerous and treacherous you are to visit mayhem on those who offend you or let things go as you believe that “vengeance is the lord’s?” Maybe you can’t withstand the shame, disgrace, pain, lost as well as the physical and emotional hurt so you render evil for evil. Okay we are all humans and do come from different backgrounds, trainings, religions, and cultures as well as different thinking’s and opinions. But before I tell readers my position, permit me to share an experience I had few years ago that will throw more light on the topic. When I retraced my footsteps back to the Holy Land Israel in 2017, God brought to my attention several times one particular name. Not a name of a person, tree or animal but a holistic City where one of the great wonders recorded in the bible took place. Why that reminder several times I later realized that God wanted me to go back and learn a whole different lesson which I am grateful to him I did on my second leg after my first one in 2011. Right after check out

At the beach of Sea of Galilee at the Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv-Israel, the name rang in my ears, “Sea of Galilee, Sea of Galilee, Sea of Galilee.....” Having spent four days in the Old City of Jerusalem, “Peace be onto the land” I visited the city of Galilee and at the beach on my fifth day of 10 days in Israel. Right at the Ferry Terminal where Jesus Boat docks, I sat down and the memory of my encounter with fellow Jerusalem Pilgrims who visited the site in 2011 came back to live. Whiles recollecting, our experience when we rode the Jesus Boat on the Sea of Galilee and the true story of Jesus and his disciples experiencing squall hit me hard this time. For the benefit of those who do not know the story let me retell the story and relate it to the topic and then draw my conclusion. The story told in Mark 4:34-41 on one fateful day, when evening came Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the

other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat.

emotionally hurt us and even more so attempt to eliminate us from this great universe of God.

There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?

But Jesus example teaches us that no matter how strong and dangerous our adversaries threatened by our existence create forces of squall to attack us, we should have faith and command the adversary, “Quiet, Be Still.”

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be Still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

People are found to be talking too much nowadays that several criminal cases trialed in our law courts are caused by anger as a result of “paying evil for evil” which is serious.

His [sic] disciples were terrified and asked each other, who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him? So many people are living behind the iron curtain [jail] these days because they could not control their anger when offended, rendered evil for evil and were found guilty by competent court of jurisdiction. Complainants were offended and should have been freed but because they rendered evil for evil the table was turned against [them] Complainants. The adversarial forces of the sea felt threatened by the power of Jesus and created the squall to reject, attack Jesus. The same way our adversaries in our work place, home, school, church, community, society feeling threatened by our mere presence will create the force of squall to attack us in various ways to reject us, neglect us, defame us, libel us, insults us, physically and

Can you imagine how our youth are streaming to jail for offences caused by coarse language? Jesus through his experience before Pontius Pilate, once again teaches us how to defeat our adversaries when threatened and attack us to talk and reveal secretes. Had Pontius Pilate knew that Jesus would

Jesus Boat on cruise on Sea of Galilee. resurrect from the dead on the third day, he would have prevented his death. But Jesus didn’t talk to reveal his secretes. Our adversaries always wants to know our plans and programmes so they will formulate strategies to defeat us therefore we need to, spent more time having communion with the lord, follow his teachings in the bible in order to find tune with him to be victorious all the time.

Are your adversaries in your work place, home, school, church, community, society feeling threatened by your mere presence and creating the force of squall to attack you? Have faith and be quiet. Be still and pray without ceasing to have the power to command the adversary, “Quiet, Be Still. In my next edition, learn the art of defeating your adversaries.

Frankly Speaking Mahama and NDC finally outdoor their Presidential Running Mate and the Electoral Battle is now on By Prof. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, Manitoba After months and months of confusion, uncertainties and delays, the Opposition National Democratic Congress and its Presidential Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama finally announced a Vice-Presidential candidate to partner John Dramani Mahama for the upcoming crucial 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. That there was total confusion and heightened anxiety in the NDC Camp over this selection cannot be hidden or denied. A tall list of interested candidates, backed by powerful interest groups within the Umbrella Party was presented who kept pushing from within the party, and from the margins to get their preferred candidate selected. The search, preference, demand, and final selection of the Vice-Presidential Running mate in the NDC took various trajectories, some colored and driven by overly ethnic agendas. It is a well- known fact that Chiefs, Elders and Party Kingpins from the Volta Region had been lobbying hard and putting pressure on the NDC, and John Mahama just after the death of former President Mills demanding that one of their own, a full-blooded Ewe from the Volta Region, be selected and conferred as the

on Prof. Mills to select him (Mahama) as his running mate against the intense pressure from former President John Rawlings who wanted the Rawlings’ family friend Betty Mould Iddrisu selected as Prof. Mills Running Mate.

Vice President. The Voltarians, particularly the Ewes, were not at all happy when John Mahama choose the late Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur as his Vice President when he (Mahama) assumed the reigns of power as President when President Mills died in July 2012. The NDC hierarchy and Kingmakers can deny all they want, but we know from very credible sources and inside information that the selection of Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur was directly due to intense pressure from the powerful Fante ethnic “caucus” within the NDC. The Fante pressure group hasbeen led by the Ahwoi brothers, the Totobi Kwaakyes, and others from the Central Region who reminded John Mahama that it was the Fante “Confederacy” within the Party that impressed

A timeline of the WE Charity controversy and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s involvement cont’d from pg. 9 Sophie and Alexandre Trudeau were also reimbursed more than $200,000 for expenses for appearances at WE events. July 13: Trudeau issues an apology for not excusing himself from deliberations about WE due to his family’s longstanding involvement with the organization. Morneau also apologizes. July 22: Morneau testifies tells the standing committee on finance (FINA) he just repaid over $41,000 to WE for travel expenses that WE covered for him and his family in 2017 to trips to Ecuador and Kenya to visit the organization’s humanitarian work. The Opposition Conservatives call for Morneau to resign. July 28: WE founders, Craig and Marc Kielburger testify

in light of the nature of their partnership with PM Trudeau and claim their good intentions behind the contract with the group. July 30: Trudeau and his chief of staff, Katie Telford, testify. Trudeau claimed that he didn’t have any knowledge about the decision to give the deal to WE until the matter came before his cabinet in early May. He also claimed he asked the proposal to be pulled back from the cabinet’s agenda to have time to assess accordingly due to his family ties. The Ontario government says it will not be continuing its relationship with WE Charity. Several companies have also cut ties with WE, including Royal Bank Canada, Loblaw Companies Ltd., Good Life Fitness and Virgin Atlantic Airways.

Readers should note and understand that the long and bitter feud between Rawlings and Prof. Mills that resulted in open insults and denigration of President Mills while he was in office by Rawlings was due mainly to the open spat the former Professor President dished out to Rawlings over the selection of Mahama as Running Mate in 2008. We had suspected all along, and it was just confirmed in a public Book published by Kwamena Ahwoi that former President Mills was so much hurt by the public spat, insults and pressure from Rawlings that he considered resigning as President on more than one occasion. The Fante “Confederacy” has been constantly reminding John Mahama that he owes his Vice-Presidential stint and eventual Presidency to the activities and machinations of the Fante “Confederacy” within the NDC Party. It was just revealed in Kwamena Ahwoi’s Book, “Working with Rawlings” that it was they (the Fante Confederacy) that recruited, trained and directed the “babies with sharp teeth”, led by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Ofosu Kwaakye, to constantly attack and push back on Rawlings, his wife and cohorts in the NDC against his (Rawlings’) continuous denigration of President Mills. Since Mahama became VicePresident in 2009, the Fante Confederacy has assumed greater influence, power and control within the NDC, much to the chagrin, and greater discomfort of John Rawlings and the “Sogakokpe Mafia” (Ewes) in the NDC. And they still wield greater power and influence today. Does anyone know, think and understand why, and how Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman was selected as the Running Mate of John Dramani Mahama for the 2020 elections? You need to look no further: read Kwamena Ahwoi’s Book, “Working with Rawlings”. The guy wrote the book, which seeks to further expose and strip down Rawlings, in close collaboration with Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman. The Professor

wrote the Foreword, the very overview and introduction of the Book. Please check it. I am not making this up. As a Professor, writer and publisher, I know that writing a Forewordto a Book means, in academic circles, that you either collaborated in putting together all the ideas in a Book or you are in tacit agreement to all the ideas a particular Book seeks to expose and espouse. And Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman did just that: She publicly announced her intentions and ideas in repudiating Rawlings with her tacit support and collaboration with Kwamena Ahwoi’s ideas in the Book just published and released. For those of you who have been paying attention since the candidacy of Prof. Opoku Agyeman was announced, commentaries from Rawlings and other influential NDC kingpins have been muted and wrapped in confusion and guarded criticisms. Jerry Rawlings said of her: “I preferred other candidates, but I support you”. Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, MP for Asawase: “I never heard of her name; her name never came up, but I had other candidates in mind”. And on and on, it goes. The simple truth is that John Mahama would NEVER have chosen Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman as his Presidential Running Mate if the NDC Fante Confederacy did not wield so much power and influence within the Party. Simply put, the Fante Confederacy are the King-makers in the NDC. The Rawlings’s, Abodakpis, Asiedu Nketias, Ofosu Ampofos, Joe Adahos and any other publicly-pretentious NDC big-wigs can pretend to be “founders”, Secretary Generals, Chairmen, etc. etc in the NDC. The real power in the NDC, however, is wielded and controlled by the Fante Confederacy within the party led by the Ahwoi brothers and Prof. Kwesi Botwe, former Finance Minister in the shadows at the background. In effect, what must be known by all and sundry is that

during the Rawlings’ PNDC from December 31, 1981 to December 1992 days through his eight years as constitutional President from January 1993 till December 2000, it is the Fante Confederacy that has been controlling the levers of power in the NDC, not the so-called founder, John Jerry Rawlings and the Sogakokpe Mafia from the Volta Region. The Fante Confederacy has been the thinkers and strategists behind the party and most of the policy-making: good, bad, ugly, evil and vicious has been the handiwork of the Fante Confederacy behind the scenes. And they have always preferred being VicePresidents. There have been five Vice-Presidents in Ghana from the NDC or its affiliates, Liman’s PNP since the Third Republic: Vice-President De Graft Johnson, 1979 to 1981 (under Dr.Liman’s PNP government), Vice President Nkensen Ackaah (1992 to 1995, whom Rawings physically beat up and drove out of office), Vice President Attah Mills, 1995 to 2000, Vice-President Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur, 2012 ton 2016, and now Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman. I feel sorry for the learned Professor, Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman. Her days in the NDC are numbered. The NDC, John Mahama and the Professor are definitely going to lose massively in the upcoming elections and the daggers and swords will be drawn on election night. Those daggers and swords, as well as the finger-pointing will all be directed, rightly or wrongly, at Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, Vice Presidential candidate of the NDC. She has never been a real NDC member. She was pushed by the Fante Confederacy to run and moderate the 2012 Presidential debates between John Dramani Mahama and Nana Akufo Addo in which she showed her real bias towards Akufo Addo and preference towards John Mahama. Her reward from Mahama was to be appointed Minister of Education after Mahama “won” the 2012 elections. And the rest is history!

The goal is to have enough supplies to give every Canadian two doses of a vaccine.

6 Things to Boost Your Immunity – Your Health Is Paramount! “Wealth is health.” You probably have heard this quote before. I personally believe health is one of the greatest blessings to us as human beings. When you wake up alive and when you retire to bed alive, you must be thankful! As a matter of fact, make thankfulness part of your lifestyle and you will be a changed person! When we are blessed with health, we have the responsibility to keep it, maintain it, enhance it, and treasure it as best as we can – I see this to be one way to expressing thankfulness for the gift of health that keeps us alive. If your health has dwindled, you can enhance it by being grateful that at least you’re still here alive. Then you can take another medical action to enhance it. We need our health to enable us to do ALL the other things we want and desire in life – think about it for a moment! What can you do without health? NOTHING! You owe it to yourself to preserve, treasure it, and enjoy it! There are some key things we can do to help our bodies and health to boost our immunity. Get these on your shopping list and thank me later. In this piece, I am more than happy to share with you what I have learned to boost mine. I learned these from a mentor who is also one of America’s top doctors, Dr. Daniel Amen. Note of disclaimer here, though, I am not a medical doctor and not in any position to give you any medical advice. This is what I have learned from a doctor and this knowledge has been a blessing to me. So, I advise you to speak with your doctor to see what is best for you. Vitamin D3 - Ensure your is middle range to high range normal. Dr. Amen said he takes 7000 International Units (IU) of Vit D3 daily. I have been taking 1000IU daily. it is explained that the darker the skin tone, the more Vitamin is needed. It is different for everyone – depending on the amount of sunshine you get and the darker or lighter your skin is. He recommended taking only Vit D3 and to get your level tested. He said the normal is between 30 and 100, and he likes his patients between 50 and 100, and he keeps his level at 80. Probiotics – Dr. Amen said 60% of our immunity is in our gut which means what we eat really matters. So, think of foods with fiber and things like kimchi. Prebiotics – garlic, onion, and mushrooms really help to boost our immunity and they are part of the excellent prebiotic foods. He said that prebiotic foods are basically foods that feed the probiotics Supplements No matter how well we strive to eat, we may lack some key nutrients in our diets. Zinc is critical, and it is said to be one of the large

deficits in the population and so 20 milligrams a day, especially during this time is essential. Zinc helps our immune system fights off viruses. Vit C is very vital; because of the lack of enough fruits and vegetables many people eat in a day. It is estimated that 90 per cent of the population does not have five servings of fruits and vegetables in a day. 2000mg a day of Vit C is recommended at this time in the life of our world. This will help strengthen the immune system. Dr. Amen also said that you really cannot take too much of Vit C, because the body will get rid of the excess that the body does not use -just in case we happen to take too much. I am happy to be sharing these with us all especially because I believe in the source where I got this great info. When I checked my supplements cabinet, I am already taking all of these! Kudos to me! The next thing to add to your list to boost your immune system is sleep. Sleep – for sleep, Dr. Amen shared some statistics. He said that soldiers who got seven hours of sleep were 98% accurate on the range. The soldiers who got 6 hours of sleep were 50% accurate on the range. Those who got 5 hours of sleep were 35% accurate on the range. Those who got four hours of sleep were only 15% accurate on the range. So when it comes to decision make and turning your immunity on, making sleep a priority is critical. Sleep, like brain health is three important things: you must care about it; avoid anything that hurts it; and then do things that help it! I personally am a fan of hypnosis for sleep. So as part of my bedtime routine, I scan through my memory throughout the events that occurred during my day, and I look for all the great things that happened. I do not think about the not-so-good things. I focus on the great things only. Then I pick out the absolute best thing about the great things that happened during my day. I focus on that and express gratitude for everything, especially the best thing that happened during the day. I fall asleep with that mental picture and in a state of thankfulness. Try this for yourself and thank me later. If you fall asleep this way, observe how you will wake up; you will awake up in a positive state, with a smile on your face and gratitude in your heart! You may also go with a delightful and uplifting music to fall asleep. This is great. Be sure not to focus on things that did not work out, the people who you think did not treat you right, and things like that. This will get you into a state of depression. You cannot undo the past, but you can make things right or better by being thankful for the present moment and being optimistic about the future. The past is gone, and the day has ended. The next day will bring you

a new beginning to make things right, plus new opportunities. This leads to the next item on the list, laughter.

liquids and simply go with the colorless blessing that mankind is blessed with, glorious water!

Laughter – programming our brain with happy thoughts, hopeful thoughts, funny thoughts, can enhance our immune system markers. What is in your mind matters to how your body functions – especially, your immunity.

What a great joy to learn from the amazing brains of Dr. Amen, and what an even greater joy it is to share this knowledge with you! I believe that knowledge is powerless unless it is applied. Now you go and act on this knowledge. Talk to your health care provider or doctor and start taking action. At least before you talk to your doctor, start drinking more wota (lol), watching funny movies, and sleeping better!

As a bonus addition to the list, I would like to include the 7th item on the list, H2O. I mean Water! The British will pronounce it ‘wota’. Hahaha. My tongue is still lost between the British and Canadian pronunciations. Anyway, drink, drink, and drink! Ditch the pop. Ditch the soda. Ditch the colored edible

To your success and optimal living. Your friend, Sarah!

Obesity not defined by weight, says new Canada guideline Obesity should be defined by a person’s health - not just their weight, says a new Canadian clinical guideline. It also advises doctors to go beyond simply recommending diet and exercise. Instead, they should focus on the root causes of weight gain and take a holistic approach to health. The guideline, which was published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal on Tuesday, specifically admonished weightrelated stigma against patients in the health system. “The dominant cultural narrative regarding obesity fuels assumptions about personal irresponsibility and lack of willpower and casts blame and shame upon people living with obesity,” the guideline, which is intended to be used by primary care physicians in diagnosing and treating obesity in their daily practice, states.

Ximena Ramos-Salas, the director of research and policy at Obesity Canada and one of the guideline’s authors, said research shows many doctors discriminate against obese patients, and that can lead to worse health outcomes irrespective of their weight. “Weight bias is not just about believing the wrong thing about obesity,” she told the BBC. “Weight bias actually has an effect on the behaviour of healthcare practitioners.” The rate of obesity has tripled over the past three decades in Canada, and now about one in four Canadians is obese according to Statistics Canada. The guideline had not been updated since 2006. The new version was funded by Obesity Canada, the Canadian Association of Bariatric Physicians and Surgeons and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research through a Strategy for PatientOriented Research grant.

Although the latest advice still recommends using diagnostic criteria like the body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference, it acknowledges their clinical limitations and says doctors should focus more on how weight impacts a person’s health. Small reductions in weight, of about 3-5%, can lead to health improvements and an obese person’s “best weight” might not be their “ideal weight” according to BMI, the guideline says. It emphasises that obesity is a complex, chronic condition that needs lifelong management. “For a long time we’ve associated obesity as a lifestyle behaviour... It’s been a lot of shame and blame before,” Ms Ramos-Salas says. “People living with obesity need support like people living with any other chronic disease.” But instead of simply cont’d on pg. 39

This column is devoted to answering your questions on health and discusions of diseases which are common among the African Canadians.

Artificial sweeteners: Understanding these and other sugar substitutes Whether your goal is cutting calories or eating healthier, options for sugar substitutes abound. Understand their pros and cons to make an informed choice. Today, artificial sweeteners and other sugar substitutes are found in a variety of food and beverages marketed as “sugar-free” or “diet,” including soft drinks, chewing gum, jellies, baked goods, candy, fruit juice and ice cream. In addition, other sugar substitutes are being touted as healthier sweeteners than regular sugar, even if they don’t have fewer calories, such as honey and agave nectar. Artificial sweeteners are synthetic sugar substitutes but may be derived from naturally occurring substances, including herbs or sugar itself. Artificial sweeteners are also known as intense sweeteners because they are many times sweeter than regular sugar. Artificial sweeteners that are currently approved by Health Canada include: Acesulfame potassium (Sunett, Sweet One),Aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet),Saccharin (Sugar Twin, Sweet’N Low), and Sucralose (Splenda) Uses for artificial sweeteners Artificial sweeteners are attractive alternatives to sugar because they add virtually no calories to your diet. In addition, you need only a fraction compared with the amount of regular sugar you would normally use for sweetness. Artificial sweeteners are widely used in processed products, including tabletop sweeteners, baked goods, soft drinks, powdered drink mixes, candy, puddings, canned foods, jams and jellies, dairy products, and scores of other foods and beverages. Check the food label to see if a product contains artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners are also popular for home use. Some can even be used in baking or cooking. Certain recipes may need modification, though, because artificial sweeteners provide no bulk or volume, as does sugar. Check the labels on artificial sweeteners for appropriate home use. Some artificial sweeteners may leave an aftertaste. You may need to experiment with artificial sweeteners to find one or a combination that you enjoy most. Possible health benefits of artificial sweeteners •

Weight control. One of the most appealing aspects of artificial sweeteners is that they are non-nutritive — they have virtually no calories. In contrast, each gram of regular table sugar contains 4 calories. A teaspoon of sugar is about 4 grams. For perspective, consider that one 12-ounce can of a sweetened cola contains 8 teaspoons of added sugar, or about 130 calories. If you’re trying to lose weight or prevent weight gain, products sweetened with artificial sweeteners rather than with higher calorie table sugar may be an attractive option. On the other hand, some research has suggested that consuming artificial sweeteners may be associated with increased weight, but the cause is not yet known.

Diabetes. Artificial sweeteners may be a good alternative to sugar if you have diabetes. Unlike sugar, artificial sweeteners generally don’t raise blood sugar levels because they are not carbohydrates. But because of concerns about how sugar substitutes are labeled and categorized, always check with your doctor or dietitian about using any sugar substitutes if you have diabetes. • Dental cavities. Unlike sugar, artificial sweeteners don’t contribute to tooth decay. Possible health concerns with artificial sweeteners Artificial sweeteners have been the subject of intense scrutiny for decades. Critics of artificial sweeteners say that they cause a variety of health problems, including cancer. That’s largely because of studies dating to the 1970s that linked saccharin to bladder cancer in laboratory rats. Because of those studies, saccharin once carried a warning label that it may be hazardous to your health. •

But according to the National Cancer Institute and other health agencies, there’s no sound scientific evidence that any of the artificial sweeteners approved for use in the United States cause cancer or other serious health problems. And numerous research studies confirm that artificial sweeteners are generally safe in limited quantities, even for pregnant women. As a result of the newer studies, the warning label for saccharin was dropped. Artificial sweeteners are regulated by the FDA as food additives. They must be reviewed and approved by the FDA before being made available for sale. In some cases, the FDA declares a substance “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS). These GRAS substances, including highly refined stevia preparations, are deemed by qualified professionals based on scientific data as being safe for their intended use, or they have such a lengthy history of common use in food that they’re considered generally safe and don’t require FDA approval before sale. The FDA has also established an acceptable daily intake (ADI) for each artificial sweetener. This is the maximum amount considered safe to consume each day over the course of your lifetime. ADIs are intended to be about 100 times less than the smallest amount that might cause health concerns. Sugar alcohols and novel sweeteners Sugar alcohols (polyols) are carbohydrates that occur naturally in certain fruits and vegetables, but they also can be manufactured. They’re not considered intense sweeteners, because they aren’t sweeter than sugar — in fact, some are less sweet than sugar. Sugar alcohols aren’t considered noncaloric or non-nutritive sweeteners because they contain calories. But they’re lower in calories than is regular sugar, making them an attractive alternative. Despite their name, sugar alcohols aren’t alcoholic. They don’t contain ethanol, which is found in alcoholic beverages. Novel sweeteners are combinations of various types of sweeteners. Novel sweeteners, such as stevia, are hard to fit into one particular category because of what they’re made from and how they’re made. As with artificial sweeteners, the FDA regulates the use of sugar alcohols. Approved sugar alcohols and novel sweeteners include: Erythritol,Hydrogenated starch hydrolysates,Isomalt,Lactitol,Maltitol,Mannitol,,Sorbitol,Xylitol Uses for sugar alcohols Sugar alcohols generally aren’t used when you prepare food at home. Rather, they are found in many processed foods and other products, usually replacing sugar on an equal basis. When added to foods, sugar alcohols add sweetness, bulk and texture. They also help food stay moist, prevent browning when heated, and add a cooling sensation to products. Sugar alcohols are used in a broad range of products, including chocolate, candy, frozen desserts, chewing gum, toothpaste, mouthwash, baked goods and fruit spreads. Sugar alcohols are often combined with artificial sweeteners in products to enhance sweetness. Check the food label to help see if a product contains sugar alcohols. Food labels may list the specific name, such as xylitol, or simply use the general term “sugar alcohol.” Possible health benefits of sugar alcohols Weight control. Sugar alcohols are considered nutritive sweeteners because they contribute calories to your diet. Still, sugar alcohols have fewer calories than does regular sugar — about 2 calories per gram on average. This means that sugar alcohols can be considered lower calorie sweeteners, and they may aid weight-control efforts. Diabetes. Unlike artificial sweeteners, sugar alcohols can raise blood sugar levels because they’re carbohydrates. But because your body doesn’t completely absorb sugar alcohols, their effect on blood sugar is less than that of other sugars. Different sugar alcohols can affect blood sugar differently. You can consume sugar alcohols if you have diabetes but you still must pay attention to the total amount of carbohydrates in your meals and snacks. Talk to your doctor or dietitian for guidance. • Dental cavities. Sugar alcohols don’t promote cavities. Possible health concerns with sugar alcohols As with artificial sweeteners, the FDA regulates sugar alcohols as food additives. Sugar alcohols typically are labeled as “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) and don’t require FDA approval before sale. •

There are few health concerns associated with sugar alcohols. When eaten in large amounts, usually more than 50 grams but sometimes as little as 10 grams, sugar alcohols can have a laxative effect, causing bloating, intestinal gas and diarrhea. Product labels may carry a warning about this potential laxative effect. Moderation is key with artificial sweeteners and sugar substitutes When choosing sugar substitutes, it pays to be a savvy consumer. Get informed and look beyond the hype. While artificial sweeteners and sugar substitutes may help with weight management, they aren’t a magic bullet and should be used only in moderation. Just because a food is marketed as sugar-free doesn’t mean it’s free of calories. If you eat too many sugar-free foods, you can still gain weight if they have other ingredients that contain calories. And remember that processed foods, which often contain sugar substitutes, generally don’t offer the same health benefits as do whole foods, such as fruits and vegetables. Bringing the Gospel to our Community

by Rev. Isaac DeGraft Takyi

THE CHRISTIAN AND COVID-19: REACH UP-THROUGH FASTING “fasting from the world.” The adjective nēstis occurs only at Mark 8:3 and Matt 15:32 in the involuntary sense “on an empty stomach.”

“Panic not, fear not, worry not, blame not, complain not, condemn not and criticize not, BUT Trust God, Have Faith, Be hygienic, Stay home, Socially distance, Mask up, Pray always, Love people, worship God, reach out and Serve society” Isaac DeGraft Takyi

Fasting is the deliberate, and generally temporary or prolonged abstention from food and sometimes water for a religious reason. Predominantly as a means of humbling oneself before Godfor His help. So, fasting isabstaining from food, or any other good gift from God, in order to humbly seek God first and love others.

What is fasting to you? When was the last time you fasted? Has your doctor asked you to fast in preparation for your annual physicals recently? Has your Pastor or church leaders requested for fasting? When was the last time you decided to fast? I think most of us know at least a little bit about what fasting is since it is mentioned over 50 times in the Bible in both the Old and New Testaments. But in spite of that, it may very well be the least understood and least practiced of all the spiritual disciplines of grace that we are expected to practice as children of God for our own growth and maturity as Christ. So, my prayer in this article is that this message will do three things for you: • First, that you will come away with a better understanding of what a Biblical fast should look like, and • Second, that you will be motivated to incorporate this discipline of grace into yourlife on a regular basis. • Finally, make the decision to be used by God as you participate in this discipline of fasting. WHAT IS FASTING? The usual Hebrew noun for fasting is ṣôm; its cognate verb is ṣûm. These occur 14 and 20 times respectively in the Hebrew Bible. Periphrastic alternatives are “to eat no bread” (e.g., 1 Sam 28:20; an idiom reflected in Luke 7:33) and “to afflict oneself” or “to afflict one’s soul”(ʾinnahnep̄eš), a technical term for fasting in the Priestly Code. The usual Greek words for fasting are the noun nēsteia and its verb nēsteuo (formed from a negative prefix and esthio, “I eat”). These denote the total abstention from food, whether by necessity or by deliberate choice. The verb may also be extended metaphorically, for instance it means “to hold back from evil or pollution” in the Gospel of Thomas, logion 27:

Kindly read along side me from Isaiah 58 and discover what godly fasting is, and its benefits to you. Godly Fasting 6

“Is not this the fast that I choose:

to loosethe bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house. when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? What if we all practice this way of fasting? Benefits of Godly Fasting 8 Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, — Insight, Revelation, Understanding and your healing shall spring up speedily; — Health, Healing your righteousness shall go before you; — Righteousness the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. — Glory 9 Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; —Answers to Prayer you shall cry, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’ — God’s Presence Godly Fasting I f you take away the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the

U.S. and Ghana work together to achieve Malaria Elimination and Zero Malaria Deaths by 2030 Ambassador Sullivan congratulated Ghana for its achievements, and noted that work remains to sustain the gains made On July 28, 2020, the U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Stephanie S. Sullivan, virtually joined the Government Statistician of the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, and the Program Manager of the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP), Dr. Keziah Malm, to launch the 2019 Malaria Indicator Survey (MIS) results. The launch highlighted impressive

results in malaria control, including a nationwide 32 percent decrease in malaria prevalence in children under five, from 21 percent in 2016 to 14 percent in 2019. The survey, conducted by GSS and NMCP, provides critical data to monitor progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and Ghana’s National Malaria Strategic Plan to achieve malaria elimination

and zero malaria deaths by 2030. With support from the U.S. government, through the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), the 2019 MIS also assists the government of Ghana and its partners to implement malaria prevention, treatment, and control interventions that improve health outcomes for Ghanaians. Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel said in a conference call Wednesday that small amounts of Moderna’s vaccine have been priced between US$32 and US$37 a dose, but that the price would be lower for big orders. Kwadwo Asamoah dropped from Inter Milan squad for Europa League B l a c k Stars midfielder, Kwadwo Asamoah has been left out of Inter Milan squad to face Getafe in the Europa League Round of 16.

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has ditched plans to have a ‘final four’ event for this year’s Champions League to be played in one country.

The Ghanaian has been replaced by Victor Moses in the 41-man list submitted by Inter Milan to UEFA for the competition. Asamoah has struggled for game time under head coach Antonio Conte in the just-ended season and has been linked with a move away from the club.

opportunities elsewhere to relaunch his career after a difficult time in Italy this season.

The 31-year-old suffered a knee injury last year and since the arrival of Victor Moses and Ashley Young to the club, Kwadwo Asamoah has fallen down the pecking order.

“For me, I think he still has years ahead of him. So far, he’s done very well for himself but he still has some years in him if he makes up his mind,” Kingston told Goal.

Asamoah has featured in 40 league games for Inter Milan since joining them from rivals Juventus in 2018. Former Ghana international, Laryea Kingston, has advised Kwadwo Asamoah to look for

Ghana international Kwadwo Asamoah

“My only problem is he’s not playing regular football now. That’s my only worry. But if he finds himself a club where he can play week in week out, trust me he still possesses a lot of qualities.

“He plays wing-back or left full-back but sometimes he goes up and you can see he has the eye for assists and sometimes he can also strike. “It would be good for him to move to a team where he would be able to play in his comfortable position – No.10 or around the box. He can be great and get to the peak that he wants to be,” he noted. Kwadwo Asamoah is reported to have received offers from clubs in Turkey. Ghana Soccernet

It means the semi-finals, which are both Morocco against Egypt as Al Ahly play Wydad Casablanca and Zamalek take on Raja Casablanca, will go ahead with matches home and away. The first leg matches will now be played on 25 and 26 September in Morocco and the second legs a week later in Egypt. It will be a busy few days for Morocco who will be hosting a mini-tournament for the semi-finals and final of the Confederation Cup in the same week. A venue for the one-off final is yet to be decided and will depend on who reaches the final, which is due to be played on 16 or 17 October.

Paris Saint-Germain submit €5m bid for Swansea City hero André Ayew - Sources

“In the principle of fairness, the final will be played at a neutral venue in the event a team from Egypt and Morocco qualify from the semis,” Caf explained in a statement.

French Ligue 1 champions, Paris Saint-Germain [PSG] have submitted a bid for Ghana skipper, André Ayew according to reports.

“Consequently, the bidding process has been opened to Member Associations excluding Egypt and Morocco for the hosting of a one-off final.

A report filed by French portal, Sqenf Foot claim PSG have submitted €5m for the Swansea City forward. André Ayew has been sensational for the Swans despite their hope of playing the Premier League collapsed against Brentford.

The French giants have made the move to sign the attacker after Kylian Mbappe suffered a nasty ankle sprain in last week’s Coupe de France final victory over SaintEtienne, with PSG releasing a statement saying the 21-yearold will be out for three weeks, meaning he would miss the August 12 European tie. And according to reports, André Ayew has been identified as a perfect fit and a replacement for the 2018 World Cup winner. footballghana.com

“Interested Member Associations are to submit their bidding file including the venue for the match and the mandatory Government guarantee no later than 17 August 2020. “In case the two Egyptian clubs or Moroccan clubs progress to the final, the one-off match will be played in either Egypt or Morocco with a proposed date of 16 or 17 October 2020. “In that regard, the concerned

Member Associations, Egyptian Football Association and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation have been issued a deadline of 15 August 2020 to confirm their availability. “Caf will continue discussions with the various stakeholders on the possibilities of organizing the remaining matches of the Total Caf Champions League 2019/20 behind closed doors or otherwise.” Caf had proposed ‘final four’ tournaments for both the Champions League and the Confederation Cup in response to football being suspended around the continent due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Confederation Cup, the second-tier continental club event, will continue as planned with a mini tournament in Morocco. Both semi-finals will be a single match and both will be played on 22 September. Egypt’s Pyramids will take on Horoya of Guinea in Casablanca while the Moroccan derby of Renaissance Berkane against Hassania Agadir will be played in Rabat. Rabat will also host the final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on 27 September with all matches played behind closed doors. Caf had hoped to organise a similar event for the Champions League but were left without host following the withdrawal of Cameroon Football Federation. “In line with the principle of fairness, it was decided against hosting a final four in either Egypt or Morocco, whose representatives constitute the semi-finalists,” Caf said in a statement. bbc.com

Solomon Asante finally reveals the secret behind his scoring form in the USA Phoenix Rising’s Ghanaian steamroller Solomon Asante has revealed the secret behind his scoring form in the USA after reaching 40 league goals in the USL. The pint-size 30-year-old forward reached 40 goals for Rising on Saturday night as he bagged a crackin finish in their 3-1 home win over Texasbased El Paso Lokomotive in Arizona. After reaching the latest milestone the forme TP Mazembe and Berekum

Chelsea star has described his mood in an interview with Ghana Sports Online. The Kumasi-born forward scored 14 goals in 36 league appearances on his maiden season before proceeding to score 22 goals in 34 games in 2019 while scoring 4 goals in 5 games in the ongoing 2020 season. This means it has taken the offensive midfielder 75 league games to score 40 goals of Rising who are chasing promotion into the Major

goals

the 1.73m forward has put his achievement down to discipline and dedication to his game. “40 goals so far… Let’s thank God for bringing me to this far. [It’s been dedication, discipline and hard work]. These are the reasons why I have gotten to where I am now,” he added. “Football is my job and I need to do it well with passion but scoring goals and winning games makes me feels happy,” he told Ghana Sports Online’s

El Akyereko in an interview. Meanwhile he settled on his goal against Orange County SC during last season’s campaign as his best goal so far in the season. The goal won last season’s goal of the season award. “All my goals are important and I love to score beautiful and incredible goals always. Last season’s goal of the season is one of my best that I scored against Orange County,” he concluded. By El Akyereko
