Black History Month - All Year! recognition of this important date. I immediately sought to correct that with the City, then was successful with the Province of Ontario, all other provinces and finally after advocating for this at the national level with many MPs, it was passed in Dec. 1995, with this first national celebration in 1996.

February Black History Month is a special time to bring focus and attention to the experiences, achievement and contributions of people of African descent in Canada. It was however never meant to be the only time that we learn about or appreciate the Black Canadian experience or the contributions we will be making into the future. I was elated as I offered my remarks in both official languages and I was able to present an art print to the Prime Minister by artist David Kibuuka. I was very hopeful that this national commemoration would mean that no longer would our history be untaught, that we would find more representation in the board rooms and front line, that our systems would recognize our needs Dr. Jean Augustine and be willing to address them in an improved way. I was very hopeful that who championed my initiative through it would mean the national narrative the House of Commons.
