In his historic independence declaration, the first Prime Minister, Kwame Nkrumah declared that the new nation and its citizens reserved the right to “manage or even mismanage its own affairs”. Over the past 60 years, Ghana has undergone tremendous changes, some very positive, others not so positive while others have been damaging and even self-destructive. The early years of nationhood under the first President, Kwame Nkrumah and the first post-colonial government run by the Convention People’s Party (CPP) were full of euphoria, promises, and high expectations. Dramatic infrastructural changes, social and economic development were undertaken in the country. This period saw the

construction of the much famous Akosombo Hydro Power dam, the Accra-Tema Motorway, the Tema Harbour, the Independence Square, among others. This period also saw the introduction of an accelerated fee-free elementary education which dramatically transformed the hitherto mainly illiterate population. An affordable and accelerated secondary and technical education was launched under the Ghana Education Trust initiatives. The objective was to train enough manpower to man the civil and industrial services that were created from the early independence years. Free Teacher Training Education was also introduced that helped to train teachers to staff the numerous elementary schools that were opened across the country. Alongside this was the introduction of what was termed “Mass Education”, a mass literacy drive that targeted illiterate cont’d on pg. 54

On Sunday February 25th, 2018, at the Ghana Calvary Methodist United Church Toronto, induction of the Circuit’s Susana Wesley Mission Auxiliary (SUWMA) Officers was held. The Theme for the Induction celebrations was: Witnessing to Christ, Teaching for effective Christian Formation. The officiating Preacher was the Very Rev. Joseph Atuahene, Minister -in-charge of the Ghana Methodist Church of Toronto. He admonished the newly officers to be cognizant of the adage that “Today is your time, tomorrow will not be your time”.
