Officer Don Yirenkyi, a Ghanaian Canadian is now the officer in charge of York Regional Police Intimate Partner Violence Unit (IPVU). . Don Yirenkyi was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant and had his new badge presented to him at a special York Regional Police Badge ceremony in early 2021 at their headquarters in New Market, Ontario. According to Statistics Canada, intimate-partner violence accounts for 28 per cent of all police-reported violent crime in Canada. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased death, hospitalization, lockdown measures, business closures, job losses, travel restrictions and school closures which have had a significant negative impact on families and also shed light on intimate partner violence. In Peel region, a neighbor of York Region, 13 of 31 murders in 2019 were domestic incidents. Peel Regional Police responded by recently creating an IPVU with 48 staff members. York Region has a population of 1.2 million residents and it is the 3rd largest municipality in Ontario and the 7th largest municipality in Canada. The growing diverse population highlights the challenge that lies ahead for Staff Sergeant Yirenkyi. However, his over 21-year career span in policing with strong investigative base and a tireless advocate for human rights and inclusivity makes him the ideal person for this important position at this critical time under Chief MacSween’s leadership. The Ghanaian News will like to congratulate Don Yirenkyi for his promotion to the rank of Staff Sergeant.
