Ontario’s young leaders heading to Accra, Ghana for the African Youth and Governance Conference T h e A f r i c a n Yo u t h Governance Conference (AYGC) is an annual gathering hosted by the Youth Bridge Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in Ghana focused on harnessing Africa’s greatest resource — its youth. The 10th AYGC, taking place in Accra, Ghana from Aug. 5-12, is themed “Mobilizing the Youth to

Build a Continent Beyond Aid.” The conference’s theme is in accordance with President Nana Akufo-Addo’s vision of environmental, social, political and economic development without the crippling dependency from the international community.

“Seeking God’s divine intervention for the Ghanaian community.

The vigil was held at the Apostles’ Continuation Church International at 10 Belfield Road, Etobicoke on Friday July 20, 2018.

In attendance were pastors of the various community churches as well as their members

and some GCAO executives.

Intensive intercessary prayers were offered for the protection of the community at large with emphasis on our youth and children. Various pastors took turns to lead the prayers. The night of prayer was promoted by the shooting of 31 year old Jenas Nyarko

Our Graduating Youth and future careers The Spring Season is over and summer has begun. A number of youth and even adults in our community have graduated from all kinds of academic levels and disciplines.

Undoubtedly the largest number of graduates will be youth leaving High School. Others, also a significant number, have graduated from Colleges and Universities. It is also significant to note that there are a number of adults in the community who have, against daunting odds and challenges, undertaken academic journeys in this country over the past few years. Some of these have graduated as well from Adult High School, from Trade Schools and from Colleges and Universities as well.

Kevin Boakye, 24 was waiting at a red light when a suspect pulled up alongside his Dodge Journey on Wednesday July 25, 2018 and opened fire according to Police.

It was a broad day light shooting in the Humber Summit neighbourhood.

He is survived by two young children.

We wish to particularly focus our attention on the youth who graduated from High School this spring. High School Graduation is a very significant milestone in No meaningful academic journeys can be undertaken in this country and in the Western world without the basic High School Diploma. So to all our youth who have made it this far, we extend our congratulations. Many of you made it through in the face of difficulties and obstacles: from hostile school environments, enduring bullying, isolation from friends, hostility and sometimes misdirection from teachers and guidance counselors.

It is sometime tempting to decide to take a break after the grueling High School journey.

Some of you may be contemplating taking a year off to work or simply to “rest” before deciding on the next steps in your life or the next step in the academic journey. We wish to strongly caution against any such move. There are countless number of studies, research and statistics which show that many youth who break off after High School to enter the job market find it difficult to re-enter the academic field. Simply put, once you break off your academic journey and enter the labour market, the attraction of the few dollars that you earn will kill the dreams of further higher education.

We therefore strongly entreat all the youth who have graduated this year to continue on to College, Trade Schools and/or University.

Keep studying while your minds are young and fresh. Keep pushing the academic buttons while you have the support of your parents and family.

A College Diploma, Trade School Diploma or University Degree is only a few more years away. That will give you more satisfaction.

That will offer you a better licence for entry into the labour market. That will secure you better satisfaction. And that will certainly enable you to earn better incomes than stopping at the gate of High School Graduation.

AfriCAN is a group 16 young leaders from Ontario who are enthusiastic about being involved in the AYGC to address discussions surrounding the social, political, cultural, financial and economic issues afflicting the African continent.

Irene Duah-Kessie, a graduate student in the Master of Science in Sustainability Management at University Of Toronto notes, “my research interests center around the intersection of health equity and sustainable development. I am interested in learning more about the root causes of Africa’s pressing social and economic issues so that myself and other like minded individuals can develop solutions to address these problems.”

As reflected in their name, AfriCAN hopes their attendance will benefit both Africa and Canada through the creation of global networks and aspires to return as educated, empowered, cultural ambassadors and pillars of positive change in our communities.

“The AYGC is important to me not only as a student but as a Ghanaian-Canadian young adult”, says Nicole Odame, a Social Sciences undergraduate from McMaster University pursuing a Master of Immigration and Settlement Studies at Ryerson University. “My interests lay among youth of the African diaspora and how they can be the pioneers of how we can impact the way we live in society

in the West.”

To make this journey possible, AfriCAN has undertaken a fundraising campaign in collaboration with the Canadian non-for-profit Empowerment Squared.

The total cost of this undertaking is $51,000. Through fundraising efforts and personal contributions, the group has successfully raised $41,000 and are still working towards raising an additional $10,000 by August 2nd, 2018.

The delegation’s greatest supporter has been Empowerment Squared, a non-profit in Hamilton that provides academic mentoring and leadership development programs to newcomer youth and adults. In addition, the delegates would like to thank Kumasi Youngsters (Hi-Blood), Nigerian Canadian Association, All Saints Igbo Anglican Church, Mbaise Cultural Organization, AfroGlobal Television and McMaster Student Success Centre for their generous contributions to their efforts.

All donations toward this initiative are being facilitated by the group’s charitable partner, Empowerment Squared, and are eligible for a full tax receipt.

SHS double intake starts September - President From September this year, the government will implement the double intake system for new entrants into public senior high schools (SHSs), President N ana Addo D ankwa Akufo-Addo has said.

The system, he explained, would be a measure to address the growing number of students benefitting from the f r e e S H S p o l i c y.

“Despite providing 96,403 mono desks, 33,171 pieces of dining hall furniture, 3,033 tables and chairs for teachers, 12,953 bunk beds, 4,335 student mattresses and 5,135 computer laboratory chairs to address the infrastructural deficit over

the year, it has not been enough to address all issues of infrastructure,” the President added.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum on education at the Tamale SHS as part of his tour of the Northern Region last Sunday, the President said the 2018/19 academic year would witness a 31 per cent increase in the population of new students of about 472,000 entering SHSs and which had resulted in a deficit of some 183,000.

The new system is expected to cost GHC323 million to fully implement.

“It is unfortunate that we have not been able to increase the infrastructure as rapidly as the number of entrants, but if you are prepared to find a way, you will find that way and we have found a way to be able to absorb this intake. We call it the Dual Intake System (DIS) that is going to allow us, on a semester basis, to address the challenge of this new population,” he added, saying: “We are doing it by, first of all, increasing the number of teachers.

The double track system, according to President Akufo-Addo, would create room to accommodate the increase in enrolment.

“It will reduce class sizes, increase the contact hours, as well as increase the number of holidays, and all this is going to be achieved with the existing infrastructure.

So we are moving to this intervention to be able to accommodate this larger population of SHS students,” he explained further.

“It should be remembered that the system has been

tried elsewhere and found to be successful, especially when it has led to a reduction in class sizes and an increase in the contact hours that the teachers have with their students,” he added.

He, therefore, urged teachers, administrators, parent-teacher associations (PTA) and regional and district directors of education across the country to embrace the system and work to ensure its success.

The end result, the President stated, would be an even greater output as far as quality in the country’s SHS system was concerned.

Don’t go beyond three babies Population Council The National Population Council (NPC) is pushing for the enforcement of a policy that will enjoin couples to give birth to a maximum of three babies as a resolute measure to control population growth.

According to the National Population Policy, the main targets for the population policy were to reduce the total fertility rate (that is, the number of children a woman is likely to have during her reproductive years) from 5.5 to 5.0 by 2000; 4.0 by 2010 and 3.0 by 2020.

The council is also proposing that severe sanctions be imposed on couples who will exceed the stipulated three babies.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra, the Executive Director of the NPC, Dr Leticia Adelaide Appiah, warned that the current annual growth rate of 2.5 per cent posed a threat to national development.

She, therefore, asked the government to review and synchronise the free maternal health policy with the target of the total fertility rate, which advocated three children for every family.

Population growth in the country currently appears to be uncontrolled, with some couples having more than 10 children.

But Dr Appiah said couples must be made to bear the social cost of every child outside the stipulated three.

“The taxpayer must not be made to bear the cost of additional children by families who exceed the three children. No, it should not be a burden on the state and so we must review our social intervention programmes to reflect this policy,” she added.

During her term as Minister for Trade and Industry, she was also a member of the Government’s economic management team, a member of the board of the Millennium Development Authority, a member of the National Development Planning Commission, and was also the Chairperson of the Ghana Free Zones Board.

Hanna S. Tetteh of Ghana DirectorGeneral of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today announced the appointment of Hanna S. Tetteh of Ghana as Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON). She succeeds Ms. SahleWork Zewde who has been appointed as Special Representative to the African Union and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU).

Ms. Tetteh most recently served in the cabinet of the Government of Ghana as Minister for Foreign Affairs (January 2013-January 2017), and Minister for Trade and Industry (February 2009-January 2013). While serving as Minister for Foreign Affairs, she was also a member of the National Security Council and the Armed Forces Council. From 2014 to 2015 she was the Chairperson of the Council of

She later returned to Parliament in January 2013 until January 2017 as the NDC Member of Parliament for the Awutu Senya West Constituency.

Akufo-Addo names Jean Mensa as new EC chair President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has named the boss of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) as the new chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

Mrs. Jean Adukwei Mensa is currently the Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), and Co-ordinator of the Ghana Political Parties Programme.

She is a lawyer by profession, and has carved a niche for herself in the field of policy research and advocacy. She has been involved in the development of policies such as the Presidential Transition Act of 2012; the Revised 1992 Constitution of Ghana (draft); the Political Parties Funding Bill; and the Revised Political Parties Bill. In 2010, she served as a Commissioner of 1992 Constitution.

Mr. Tamrat Samuel, Assistant SecretaryGeneral and Senior Coordinator for Peace and Security Reform in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General, will serve as Acting Director-General until Ms. Tetteh assumes her position.

Landing in the right place

Growing up, he was fascinated by astronauts. He also wanted to be a doctor. But could he find a career that combined medicine and space?

When he began his studies at McMaster in 2013, Kwasi Nkansah ’17 had no idea that his interactions with professors and other mentors would help him find exactly that career.

Nkansah spent his first year, like most students, taking a mix bag of courses. In his second year he met with one of his professors, Jonathon Stone, associate professor of biology, who helped steer him towards Life Sciences with a specialization in bio-physiology.

His electives were in astronomy and physics.

In the summer of second year Nkansah took a research position in Grant McClelland’s lab in the department of biology. There, Nkansah looked at extreme conditions in which an organism can survive. Conditions such as extreme cold and low oxygen environments – both applicable to space. That experience only strengthened his interests.

Through Jonathon Stone, Nkansah was also introduced to Canadian Space Agency professionals with whom he connected by email.

Notably, Dafydd Williams – astronaut and physician scientist for McMaster and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, and CSA flight surgeon Raffi Kyuymjian.

“Raffi told me to apply to the

Kwasi Nkansah ’17 International Space University in Strasbourg, France,” says Nkansah.

“He inspired me to pursue a career in space medicine so that Canada can continue to have a strong role in that field.”

After graduating with a Science degree in 2017, Nkansah followed Kyuymjian’s advice and was accepted at the International Space University. One of four Canadians enrolled in the Master’s of Space Study program, he is now on a sixmonth internship at the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany.

The end goal for Nkansah is to become a flight surgeon. A term, he says, that is a misnomer.

They do not, in fact, perform any surgery.

“A flight surgeon’s role is to care for both the medical and psychological state of astronauts,” explains Nkansah. “Whether astronauts are in space or on Earth, their

mental and physical well-being is important.”

Throughout a mission in microgravity, astronaut cardiovascular fitness declines, but it is not fully understood why.

In his internship in Germany, Nkansah takes part in a study to address those concerns by testing new methods and devices to accurately and non-invasively track an astronaut’s heart in space.

“This is important to us because astronauts perform activities outside of the space station that requires above average levels of fitness.”

Astronauts need a fully functional cardiovascular system for re-entry to normal gravity on Earth so that they can escape the vehicle in the case of hazards like fire or water.

The devices will provide a better understanding of why cardiovascular fitness declines in space and how to keep astronauts at optimal health. Eventually, these devices could be used on the International Space Station.

Black Woman Named President of American Medical Association, Makes History “No one in my family had gone to medical school, and I had no family friends that did,” Harris said. “It is not an easy thing to do if you don’t know or don’t have guidance as what to major in.”

Dr. Patrice Harris Dr. Patrice Harris has made history by becoming the first African-American woman elected to be president of the American Medical Association (AMA).

Harris, who hails from Bluefield, West Virginia and was elected last month, will serve as the Association’s 174th president, according to Charleston Gazette-Mail.

The West Virginia University (WVU) graduate, who begins her tenure as president June 2019, knew she wanted to be a doctor, but wasn’t sure how to achieve it since no one else in her family had gone to medical school.

Harris studies psychiatry in Atlanta, Georgia and told the Gazette mail that she initially wanted to pursue another form of medicine.

“It was my plan to be a pediatrician, and that was my plan up until my third year of medical school,” She said. “The brain was just fascinating to me, and when I went to my third-year psychiatry clerkship I felt at home, and I then decided that I could merge my love for working with children and adolescents with psychiatry.”

Angry 5-Year-Old Sets Fire to Ohio Family Home: Police A little boy angry at his mother set his family’s Ohio home on fire, leaving it uninhabitable, according to authorities.

The boy’s 12-member family has a long history with law enforcement, Flanagan said. They had lived in a duplex with

“We are still investigating,” he said.

FOCUS Who is to blame for the rising Youth Gun Violence in our Streets?

Asks Joe Kingsley Eyiah, OCT, Brookview MS, Toronto, Canada The issue of Youth Gun Violence cum armed robbery in our streets both in Ghana and in Canada, especially in the cities of Kumasi, Accra and Toronto continues to raise many questions. For example, are the education systems (in Ghana and Ontario) not inclusive enough? Are Ghanaian youth in Toronto exploiting the social system of the province to their detriment? Could it be that the children are facing cultural dilemma in their new country of abode? Or, are parents and guardians miserably failing in their duty of providing the needed support to the children? Perhaps, the society is not caring enough! Look at the number of day light armed robberies in the streets of Accra in recent times.

What about the rising youth gun violence in the streets of Toronto this summer? Who is to blame?

In whichever direction one points the “accusing fingers” I think the problem of youth gun violence among Ghanaians both in Ghana and elsewhere deserves our attention. The future of our community is seriously threatened by this phenomenon. Therefore, there is the need for this discourse and action to redress the situation.

The Nature of the Problem: Ms. JamilaAman, a consultant for Premier Canadian Business Solutions Inc. in Toronto-Canada recently r e v e a l e d t h a t To r o n t o Housing is home to 164,000 residents of which more than 65% of black residents are female single mothers which translates into 65% of economic and political powers which are underutilized.

These are opportunities that can be put into good use. She was speaking at a recent African Canadian Youth Leader Roundtable Conference in Toronto. Ms. Aman, a community activist was calling for ACTION! My personal philosophy as an educator is based on the fact that the greatest aim of education is not knowledge, but action. Though it is good to have knowledge about or in something that knowledge fails to ‘serve’ society if it is not put into action. Action brings results. Results bring improvement and progress for the benefit of the community.

Knowledge becomes creative and open when there is action.

Africans have an adage that says, “it takes the whole village (community) to raise up a child.” Undoubtedly, children are our heritage and it is the responsibility of us as adults to identify, talk about and take action on any factors that put our youth “at risk”.

According to the National Crime Prevention Council of Canada (1997), “risk are the things or experiences in a young person’s life that increase the chances of a

youth being victimized or of developing one or more behavior problems which might be harmful to the youth or/and other persons or property.”

Could it be argued that the society puts the youth at risk.

I am tempted to agree with Jean Jacques Rousseau in his assertion that “society has enfeebled man, not merely by robbing him of his own strength, but still more by making his strength insufficient for his needs” (see Classics of Western Thought, Volume III edited by Edger E. Knoebel, 1988, p. 149).

I could not agree with Rousseau the more when I consider risk antecedents such as poverty, neighborhood and family dysfunction that increase the individual’s vulnerability to future behavior problems in the family, school, or community.

These environmental risk factors are obviously the products of society. The society must be ‘healed’ of these ‘diseases’ as a means to rescuing our ‘youth at risk’.

There are many groups of “youth at risk”. Among these is the marginalized group of street youth.

Types of Street Youth: Three categories of street youth are identified. They are the voluntary, homeless and the mentally ill.

1. The voluntary group supposedly comprises of children who have chosen to be on the street as a way of life. Unfortunately, the police, schools and most social work agencies in Ghana have viewed all street children in the country as belonging to this category. Their policies and practices toward the street children have therefore often worsened the life situation of the street child in Ghana.

More disturbing is the position the community has adopted toward street children in Ghana. People hold the voluntaristic explanation that this population of the “youth at risk” are on the street largely by choice. The street children are regarded as good-for-nothing kids in the community. They are called derogating names like kuboro and asan in Ghanaian language.

Perhaps, Ghana is not alone in such voluntaristic reasoning. This reasoning has considerable currency within the political arena of even developed economies such as Canada and USA.

Snow and Anderson (1993) quote the American President, Ronald Reagan as having consented to this reasoning when commenting on the problem of homeless people in America in 1984. He said, “one problem we’ve had is the people who are sleeping on grates, the homeless who are homeless by choice.” This notion has not changed much over the years in America and unfortunately in Ghana too, where economic problems facing poor families continue to drive Ghanaian youth onto the street.

Even though it is generally believed that street youth are on the street largely by choice, findings of recent research I conducted on the phenomenon of street children in both Canada and Ghana did not confirm that opinion. As matter of fact, if there are any street children who belong to this category, they would not constitute more than one percent (1%) of population of youth roaming the streets.

I discovered “peer attraction” as one of the factors that keep some youth on the streets.

Street children often clashed with the law by following their street friends who engaged in “shop-lifting” to survive on the streets.

2. About ninety-five percent (95%) of street youth come under the category of homeless. In Ghana, many street youth between the ages of 12 and 20 are without homes to turn in during the night. They sleep in front of stores and in abandoned motor vehicles. These youth have traveled from the countryside mainly to fend for themselves in the cities and urban towns due to lack of family support. Poverty or economic dislocation has driven them from their homes.

Unfortunately, some single mothers have even encouraged their teen daughters to go to the streets to make ends meet. Such vulnerable young girls have landed in prostitution and have become homeless, hanging around with pimps whose help is just of exploitation of the children.

Male street children often engage in street trading. Other constitute cheap labor for market women who hire these children to cart their goods to and from the market places.

There is among this group a handful of school dropouts.

3. The remaining four percent (4%) of children roaming the street are mentally ill outpatients. Cut off of funds to Ghana’s asylums at Pantang and Ankaful have led to the inability of these institutions for the mentally ill to cope with increasing number of cases that come to them.

Unfortunately, some youth are among these numbers though not alarming for this population of “at risk”.

Pathways to the Street: The ever increasing numbers

of homeless street youth in the cities of both Canada and Ghana pose a big question that ought to be considered carefully by those who bring intervention programs to this population of “at risk”. Where have they come from, and why?

My personal experiences with street youth in Ghana and, the recent brief study I embarked on to discover more about street youth in Toronto have convinced me that the roots of homelessness could be traced to structured factors.

“Structural factors”, according to Snow and Anderson (1993) “refers to social arrangements and trends that affect the probability that specific events or life trajectories will be experienced.” They go on further to mention the two sets of structural factors which are often referred to in most discussions of root of homelessness: One set concerns the scope and sources of residential dislocation, the other concerns the nature and sources of economic dislocation. As much as I agree with the assertion that residential dislocation is one of the main causes of homelessness in general, I would contend that it could not be considered on the same degree for homeless street youth. Many street youth have found “safety” in the streets not because they have no houses or homes to return to. Instead, they have either suffered abuse by adults in the homes or suffered lack of family support. The former is true in most cases of street youth in Canada while the latter is equally true for majority of street children in Ghana.

The embattled argument that some youth have chosen to go against their parents’ advice and live in the streets is not sufficient to negate that factor that society/governments and many parents/adults are mostly to blame for pushing our youth onto the streets. We as adults/ policy makers/community leaders and politicians have not paid the required attention to the socio-economic needs of challenging/struggling neighborhoods in our

constituencies. Thus, allowing poor neighborhoods to breed street youth who terrorize our communities with gun violence and armed robbery.

Suggestion: One could argue that Africans being the latest immigrants to Canada are facing the problem of adjustment. The raising of the African Youth in the apparent emergence of two (2) cultures has become an issue of major concern to the whole African community in Canada, especially in the city of Toronto. However, it is also an undeniable fact that many African/Ghanaian families in Canada are breaking down and children are being compelled to fight and struggle for their own survival. Family violence and divorce are on the increase among Ghanaian-Canadians.

Emotional and “physical” abuse of children and spouses as well as neglect of children (especially, their educational needs) are becoming chronic problems in the community.

I repeat what I suggested some time ago on this forum that as parents we need to put our knowledge in child upbringing into action to save our kids from waywardness.

The home could be likened to a greenhouse where children grow to their fullest potential under the care of wise and patient gardener. We are like the gardener who nurturers each plant in the greenhouse to come to flower as the Creator has endowed it. “Train up a child in the way he should go....” Proverbs 22:6.

Also, it is unfortunate that there is very little or on support from the community to individuals, families and our youth. Though some Ghanaian community churches are trying to meet such needs in organizing family and youth programs/seminars their efforts are not enough.

All churches and cultural associations must pay the needed attention to supporting our youth. It could be argued in some circles that our youth exploit the laws of Canada to their own detriment (e.g. leaving home early to depend on government welfare; lying about their parents to

government authorities; and dropping out of school due to non-inclusive education system in Canada) and find themselves roaming the street eventually, most youth are pushed onto the street by the negligence of their parents and the community at large.

I therefore support the initiatives of the present leadership of the Ghanaian Canadian Association of Ontario (GCAO) based in Toronto to bring social, education, health and cultural intervention programs to the Ghanaian youth population in Canada. Their untiring efforts to secure the much anticipated Ghanaian Canadian Heritage Centre in Toronto as a hub to serve the needs of the youth as well as seniors and new comers to the community. Under the slogan, ONE VOICE, ONE COMMUNITY CENTRE, THE TIME IS NOW! The GCAO spearheaded by President Emmanuel Duodu opines, “Once in a generation, history is made and this is the dawn of that journey!”

Torontorians are invited to be part of this history as the join hands with the GCAO to fundraise on August 12, 2018 for the Ghanaian Canadian Heritage Centre in Toronto.

The Time is Now! Youth gun violence, poverty, less opportunities for people of African descent, and black youth facing racism are working against the progress of many African communities in the Western World. The only hope, according to Ms. Aman of African Canadian Social Development Council, is a new vision to deal with the current crises. We must stop being a consumer society and begin to think as investor society, create activities that unite us instead of just talking about it and lastly snap pot of self-sabotage and focus on education, business and community to become resilient communities to lead our youth to achieve success in their diverse fields of endeavor.

Let us remind ourselves that we can’t take our youth past where we are. We must therefore, be good examples in both words and deed to our children.

The Anas-Agyapong brouhaha: Too many gullible Ghanaians

By Edmund Agbeko, Toronto I am amazed at the UNCRITICIAL acceptance of Agyapong’s doctored video by some gullible Ghanaians and remarks attacking Anas so far because of the doctored cut and paste video that Agyapong and his cohorts criminally produced from stolen videos from Anas’s office.

The video of Annan of HotFm accepting money shows the world the plot they have hatched to discredit Anas and his team in support of the corrupt people in Ghana who are now scared of being exposed by Anas.

They are not the least motivated by a desire to fight corruption.

Was corruption not one of the major reasons the soldiers were giving for staging coups in Ghana too? Was it legal to stage coups against corrupt governments?

Anas’ methods have been challenged and approved by courts many times. So far as I am concerned, corruption must be defeated by hook or crook methods.

Any innocent people caught in the dragnet

$100,000? Or, how they spent the money nyafu, nyafu on parties and girls?

The video was not shown in court because the judge denied the prosecution from showing it. So how can Anas show it to the public later? That will be illegal! must be appropriately compensated. Yes, there are times the end justifies the means inactions of the state. Yes, Anas is not a representative of the state but a private investigator besides being a journalist, and so have much leverage just as state detectives and spies do.

That made him angry enough to nail Justice Quist too in his exposé on the Judiciary and got him sacked. If Anas cooperated with him to sabotage that case, does anyone think Anas would later go and do a sting job on him, his partner in crime? Use your brains!

Now, it is amazing that some Ghanaians cannot see through the farce in the cut and paste video Agyapong is showing as Who Watches the Watchman? Anas even wrote about the Newtown video in which he got Babatunde and Mubarak to confess to him by pretending that he’d help them out. It is on Ghanaweb of 15 Sept 2009.

Again, it is just a pure lie that the state prosecutor was paid $5000 based on what was purportedly said in the video. A careful listening to the video, the inflection of the words and analysis of the context of the question reveals that she actually asked: “tell me the amount transferred to him”. She didn’t say “me”, as Agyapong and cohorts have led some gullible and uncritical Ghanaians to believe!

You can all go and read his article. Did anyone hear Anas speak happily about how they were ready to bribe him with

So the whole of Agyapong’s case rests on whether “him” or “me” was said in the video! I had asked others to listen to the video without knowing what it was about and they all said “him” was said!

Agyapong’s case against Anas and the defamatory remarks against the state prosecutor collapsed completely on this easily proven falsehood alone.

You don’t need a lawyer to prove that. Only a good English listener is enough. Audio equipment can be brought in to demonstrate the inflections electronically with sound waves. Any Police Forensic lab in Ghana to do that, since they prefer to build Police hospitals in Ghana instead of providing equipment to the Police to fight and solve crime cases?

But then, contextually, are we to believe that, in the twinkle of an eye $5000 was transferred to her on the spot by Anas

the international mobile banker who can transfer dollars magically? We did not see him doing any transfer on even his mobile phone.

So how come an ALLEGED inquiry about how much a person would be paid become a transfer to her? That’s, already transferred into her account within seconds, before our very eyes?

And she claimed in her rebuttal that she does not even have a dollar account, something which can be verified. So, into which account was the money transferred into?

The flaws in Agyapong’s doctored video to implicate Anas can be easily exposed by anyone who can understand English well and can use his or her brains to analyze the contextual circumstances of the exchanges in the video.

Why are we not seeing this happening on any FM station in Ghana?

Besides this, Agyapong and cohorts lied that the case was not prosecuted, whereas it was actually prosecuted to the end and only finally dismissed 2 years after the original prosecutor retired. Is it her fault that the judge was probably bribed by the accused to make the case “basaaa”?

Should we not be discussing and blaming the porous and unwholesome judicial system in the country which can see cases adjourned for years

on end and pressing to find a lasting solution to that by demanding laws and rules to be made to compel cases to be heard judiciously within a specified period? After all, the judges and the judicial systems are just ancillary services or support to good governance of a country in the manner of settling disputes, sanctioning offenders or those who break the laws, etc. As the case is now, we have become hostages to a capricious judicial system.

There are too many gullible Ghanaians who are incapable of using their brains to analyze logically and rationally but are also forming and trying to express their opinions on this matter. As for the journalists of the Annan type and the media houses of Agyapong, they have a grudge and an agenda against Anas and so are out to discredit him but they are doing a disservice to the nation and the public good and so must be condemned and sanctioned. It is a shame that the sane and impartial journalists have remained silent though.

The victims themselves?

Don’t worry. Agyapong will have his day in court to prove his defamatory claims.

I know some commoners will continue to support Agyapong no matter what, so let me leave it at this point. Their opinions will not matter in the long run anyway. The truth shall out and win!

Bank of Canada raises key interest rate to 1.5 per cent

OTTAWA - The Bank of Canada raised its benchmark interest rate Wednesday in an economy that it predicts will remain resilient even as it faces an even bigger bite from deepening trade tensions.

The rate hike was the central bank’s first interest rate move in six months and lifted the trend-setting rate to 1.5 per cent, up from 1.25 per cent. It was the bank’s fourth increase over the last 12 months and the first time the rate has been this high since December 2008.

The decision, a move that will likely prompt Canada’s big banks to raise their prime rates, arrived in the middle of a trade dispute between Canada and the United States that’s expected to hurt both economies.

The bank took the step even as it predicts larger impacts from the widening trade uncertainty, particularly after the United States imposed steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada and Ottawa’s retaliatory measures. The tariff fight, the bank estimated, will shave nearly 0.7 per cent from Canada’s economic growth by the end of 2020.

However, the negative blow of the trade policies recently put in place to be largely offset by the positives for Canada from higher oil prices, which are above US$73 per barrel, and the stronger U.S. economy, the bank said.

“Although there will be difficult adjustments for some industries and their workers, the effect of these measures on Canadian growth and inflation is expected to be modest,” the bank said in a statement.

The bank, however, didn’t quantify the possible effects of auto tariffs on Wednesday.

Governor Stephen Poloz has signalled in the past that he’s focused on data he can measure rather than the impacts of trade policies that have yet to materialize.

Canadian businesses must also contend with the uncertainty surrounding the difficult renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement, for which talks have stalled.

The Bank of Canada also has its eye on how widening global trade disputes, including an intensifying battle between the U.S. and China, will affect the world’s economy. It warns that “escalating trade tensions pose considerable risks to the outlook” at the global level.

Even with the trade issues, the Bank of Canada is now predicting slightly stronger growth for Canada over the next couple of years, according to updated projections it released Wednesday in its quarterly monetary policy report.

It expects real gross domestic product to grow 2.2 per cent in 2019, up from its April call of 2.1 per cent, and by 1.9 per cent in 2020, compared with its previous prediction of 1.8 per cent. The economy’s growth

Looking ahead, the bank predicts Canadian growth will continue to see bigger contributions from exports and business investment, which were both stronger than expected in the first three months of the year.

At the same time, household spending will represent a smaller and smaller share of overall growth due to the dampening effects of higher interest rates and stricter mortgage rules, it said.

Economists anticipate several more hikes this year and in 2019.

For its part, the bank said Wednesday that it’s expecting higher interest rates will still be necessary over time to keep inflation near its target.

However, it intends to continue with its gradual, data-dependent approach.

Leading up to the announcement, Poloz was widely expected to raise the interest rate following a run of encouraging economic numbers, including the Bank of Canada’s own survey on business sentiment, still-solid job markets and growth in wages.

The bank, however, noted in its report that despite “healthy” labour market conditions, employment growth and average hours worked have slowed down compared to last year’s surge. It also said underlying wage growth has been weaker than what would normally be expected in a tightened job market.

The country’s inflation rate is expected to rise as high as 2.5 per cent - above the two per cent mid-point of the bank’s target range - due to temporary factors such as higher gasoline prices. It’s expected to settle back down to two per cent in the second half of 2019.

National Bank of Canada experts wrote in a note to clients Wednesday that when it comes to future hikes Poloz may choose to err on the side of caution because of the threats of auto tariffs, which they warned, if applied, would have “unambiguously devastating economic impacts,” particularly in Ontario.

CIBC chief economist Avery Shenfeld wrote in a research note Wednesday that “there are worries ahead, growth hasn’t been stellar, but the backdrop has been just good enough for the Bank of Canada to nudge rates a quarter point higher.”

Lisa Thompson says ministry staff are working to inform school boards of the decision to revert to the curriculum that was in place before 2015.

Thompson says the ministry will be moving quickly to consult parents on how to update the curriculum and details on that process will be coming soon.

Premier Doug Ford promised to repeal and replace the controversial sex-ed curriculum when he ran for the Progressive Conservative leadership and repeated the pledge during the spring election.

The new sex-ed curriculum s p a r k e d c o n t r o v e r s y, particularly among social

conservatives, when the Liberal government introduced it.

It was the first time the curriculum had been updated since 1998 and included warnings about online bullying and sexting, but protesters zeroed in on discussions of same-sex marriage, gender identity and masturbation.

Thompson also says the ministry is looking into how to replace a $100-million fund earmarked for school repairs that was cut earlier this month.

The money was to be paid out from revenues of the capand-trade system, which Ford began dismantling almost immediately after taking office, as he had promised to do.

Thompson says the government will try to find internal sources to replace the funding, which was announced in April and cut earlier this month, surprising school boards that had just begun to spend the money.

Hydro One board and CEO out

Hydro One’s CEO and board are out after a mass resignation from the utility.

“I’m happy to say today the CEO and the board of Hydro One – they’re gone, they’re done,” Premier Doug Ford said at a news conference at Queen’s Park late Wednesday afternoon.

The utility said in a statement that CEO Mayo Schmidt’s retirement from his post is effective as of today and that the utility has entered into an agreement with the province for “the orderly replacement of the board of directors of Hydro One.” The plan for their departure comes less than two weeks after Doug Ford was formally sworn in as premier at Queen’s Park.

During his election campaign, Ford repeatedly vowed that if he became premier, he would “fire” Hydro One’s board and CEO Mayo Schmidt, whom he dubbed the “$6 million man” in a dig at his $6.2 million salary.

Ford said he would fire the board because they enjoyed generous salaries while presiding over the partiallyprivatized utility at a time when hydro rates around the province

saw a sharp increase.

Documents released in May showed the part-time board voted to boost their 2018 salaries from $160,000 per year to $185,000 per year, receiving half the compensation in cash and half in shares. Board Chair David Denison’s salary was boosted from $260,000 to $330,000. The company said the move brought salaries closer to the median of its broad peer group.

Critics have said that getting rid of the board and CEO would make little difference to hydro rates in the province. The company has noted that just two cents on a monthly hydro bill goes toward CEO pay.

The previous Liberal government moved to privatize Hydro One in 2015 in order to raise cash to pay for infrastructure, eventually selling off 53 per cent of its shares in the utility by the end of 2017.

It has been estimated that the cost of getting rid of Schmidt could be as high as $10 million because of severance stipulations in his contract.

Justin Trudeau’s Canada Day Message Thanks Canadians For Standing Up For Each Other He’s visiting two companies with industries at the centre of the trade dispute.

Trudeau met with workers at a major canning and food processing operation in Leamington, where the tomato paste used in French’s ketchup is made.

Later in the day, he visited a major steel refinery in Regina. The two industries are at the heart of the trade dispute.

Trudeau’s counter-tariffs on a range of products took effect on Sunday — a month after the Trump administration slapped duties on U.S. steel and aluminum imports from Canada and other allies.

Canada’s response includes imposing $16.6 billion worth of tariffs on a long list of consumer products that come from a wide range of sectors — from beer kegs, to ballpoint pens, to ketchup.

On Friday, Trudeau spoke with U.S. President Donald Tr u m p b y t e l e p h o n e , reiterating that Canada has had “no choice” but to take countermeasures against the U.S. tariffs.

It appears Trump, too, is not backing down.

In an interview that aired Sunday morning, Trump said he will delay signing a revised version of the North American Free Trade Agreement until after the U.S. mid-term elections in November in hopes of reaching a better deal.

He said he could quickly sign an agreement with Mexico and Canada, “but I’m not happy with it. I want to make it more fair.”

In the interview on Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo,” Trump again threatened to impose tariffs on imported cars, trucks and auto parts, saying, “The cars are the big ones.” The move has been viewed as a possible negotiating ploy to restart NAFTA talks, which could resume following Sunday’s elections in Mexico.

He said Trudeau wanted to be on the ground with steelworkers at a family event on the day Canada’s counter-tariffs came into effect to “make it really tangible what this is about.

“There is so much to be proud of as a country, but the thing we always have to be most proud of is Canadians ourselves — the way we step, the way we lean on each other, the way we’re creative and optimistic about the future, the way we look at challenges as opportunities, to grow, to build, to be there for each other. Angela Egan said she feels Trump is trying to “bully” Canada into submission.

Diab said in an interview that the tomato-processing facility will increase prices of its products as a response to the Canada-U.S. trade dispute.

“I’m glad that Justin Trudeau is standing up to him, because I feel like that’s his modus operandi, he just tries to bully to get his way and we need to stand up for ourselves,” she said.

However, the company does not plan on laying off any workers or shrinking its production, Diab said.

“I think if you stand up to him, he’ll back down.”

Trudeau got a tour of the facility and the two spoke about the trade environment and how Diab supports Trudeau’s retaliatory tariffs.

“We just need closure so that we can move forward and companies can start investing again,” said Diab, adding that the prime minister’s visit to the company made him feel more “confident” in the market.

“Our company will survive no matter what.”

In a news conference after the swearing-in ceremony at Rideau Hall, Trudeau said the focus on innovation and trade is a response, in part, to the constantly changing international context.

Legal Validity and Genuineness of Marriages for Sponsorship Purposes A legally valid marriage is not necessarily a genuine marriage just as a genuine marriage could be legally invalid. For a marriage to be recognized for immigration purposes in Canada, the marriage in question must be legally valid and genuine and should also not be a type of marriage excluded

by Immigration Canada notwithstanding its legal validity and genuineness.

For immigration purposes, a marriage must generally be valid both under the laws of the jurisdiction where it took place and under Canadian Federal law. However, with a few exceptions, and as a general policy, the Canadian Government recognizes marriages that are contracted in accordance with the laws of the place where the marriages occurred.

Thus certain forms of customary marriages are deemed acceptable for

finding out whether the relationship has been entered into fraudulently to facilitate immigration of any of the parties. A number of factors would collectively determine the genuineness of the marriage and the intent of the parties. immigration sponsorship purposes.

Generally, Canadian laws would require previously married applicants to be legally divorced before they remarry. The parties are not supposed to be related whole blood, half blood or by adoption. And foreign national spouses must be of certain age to be recognized for immigration purposes.

The legal requirements aside, a marriage, like adoption, must be genuine in order to warrant immigration sponsorship consideration. Officers are interested in

This is apparently based on a general perception and presumption that the nature of proxy, telephone, fax, internet and other similar forms of marriage can help to facilitate early and forced marriages because the absence of one or both parties makes it difficult to determine that they have consented to the marriage.

A proxy marriage is a marriage in which one or both of the participants are not physically present and are represented by another person at the time of solemnization of the marriage. A telephone, fax or internet marriage is a marriage in which one or both of the parties are not physically present at the same location, but participate at the solemnization of the marriage by telephone, fax, internet or other means.

The regulatory amendments disallowing proxy, telephone, fax, internet, and other similar forms of marriage for immigration purposes came into force on June 10, 2015. An exception however exists for members of the Canadian Armed Forces, who due to restrictions related to their service, might be absent from their

marriage ceremony. Also, before a decision is made to refuse an application due to the foregoing impropriety, the officer is required to consider whether the couple meets the definition of common-law partner and can be processed as such. Humanitarian and compassionate considerations may also be applied to overcome the regulation if the situation warrants that.

Amendments have accordingly been made to section 5 and subsections 117(9) and 125(1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR) to reflect the new decision on proxy marriages. Section 5(c) of IRPR states that “both parties are to be physically present at the time of the marriage ceremony” while section 117(9) states that if one of the parties was not present, then the foreign national is not considered a member

of the family class and section 125(1) sets out the same requirements for membership in the spouse or common-law partner in Canada class.

In view of the ongoing changes to the regulations governing family class sponsorships and the increasing complexity of this area of immigration law, it is advisable to contact a professional for clarification whenever necessary to avoid unnecessary delays, refusals and appeals in your sponsorship.

Gruesome murder of Ghanaian in Toronto, wake-up call to the High Commission, chiefs and the clergy in Canada By: Stephen A.Quaye.

It must be stated without one looking over his shoulders that, gun toting has become the bane of patriotic Canadians with Ghanaian descents and residents in the whole Greater Toronto Area [GTA].

Unnecessary carrying and use of guns by the youth and suspects usually for criminal purposes in the city is currently threatening the serene atmosphere of peace all enjoys and that something must be done to stamp out or control the criminal gun activities.

The situation has become so serious that now there is fear and panic among some patriotic Canadians and residents thereby withdrawing from national, religious and social events where the after math has been gruesome murders of innocent persons.

It has been noticed that a greater majority of Ghanaian young

adults are not participating in various Ghanaian cultural, traditional and social events in the Greater Toronto Area.

Apathy exhibited by these young adults are in response to the unnecessary carrying and use of guns by suspects who as trigger happy persons least provoked or not provoked shoot and kill innocent persons anytime anywhere.

Recent gruesome murder of late Jenas Nyarko, 31, Canadian with Ghanaian decent of Replin Road and Old Meadow Lane Area of Toronto, should be a wakeup call to Ghana High Commission in Canada, chiefs and traditional authorities, the clergy, resident associations, opinion leaders, student associations and ordinary people to look at the way Ghanaians live their life in Canada.

According to Toronto Police, on Sunday 24 June 2018 at 1:56 a.m. it responded to a shooting in Replin Road.

The security footage of suspected vehicle was also released by the police for all to watch on their YouTube for those with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact them.

Apart from that, leaders of various Ghanaian unions and residents have held press conferences which they were enraged over the gruesome murder and called on the suspects to hand themselves

in to the Toronto Police.

Well said and done to condemn the unnecessary carrying and use of guns by suspects who carry out gruesome murders.

However, we must also not lose sight of the fact that an introspective exercise must be conducted by all stake holders to find the root cause of these criminal activities of which innocent Canadians and patriotic residents are being murdered anyhow.

But in all, it is now a big wakeup call to all to review the organization of our cultural, traditional and social events which the aftermath has been the shocking news of gruesome murders of innocent residents.

Funerals, out doorings, wedding receptions, and birth day parties have become a common savour of both national and international tourists in the city of Toronto and must be considered by all.

The rich culture, tradition and colourful attraction of funerals, outdooring’s, wedding receptions, birth day parties, and graduation and retirement get-togethers particularly among Ghanaians provide valuable content for residents with good appetite for Ghanaian culture in a foreign land like Canada as well as unionize.

Consider the income generated by business operators of banquet halls, the fashion designers who

sew the African wears for such events, the employment services for the hoteliers who provide accommodation, the bookings for the airlines, the undertakers, the commercial transport owners and many more.

However the timing of such events has become one particular problem most residents have been complaining about ever since but there seems to be no solution to it.

Back home in Ghana, funerals are held from morning till 6:00 p.m. where friends and loved ones sympathize and comfort the bereaved family for the loss of their beloved.

But in Toronto bereaved Ghanaian families schedule their funeral events from 9:00 p.m. Saturday evenings through the mid night till 4:00 a.m. early Sunday morning.

Suppose the funeral late Jenas Nyarko attended and was returning when she was shot was held between 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. maybe she could have escaped that gruesome murder on that fateful day.

THAT IS MY OPINION. The unfortunate shooting and killing of Jenas Nyarko happened around 1:56 a.m.

Sunday 24 June2018 after attending a funeral.

Some traditional arguments

in support of holding the late night funeral events, wedding receptions and birth day parties is that it offers those who work on morning and day shifts on weekends the opportunity to and contribute.

But these are the same people when asked of their opinions about the matter expresses fear and panic over gun toting at night in the area thereby growing apathy in showing up at social events.

Therefore we need to start from somewhere by identifying the problems associated with the organization of such events and find lasting solutions to them.

The loud ringing tone on my simple and easy to use cell phone was not fun for my friends to laugh at me.

Rather, the type of cell phone I took out from my side pocket and received the call poked the fun which sent my friends into frenzy.

“Hey my friend, where did you buy that phone? From dollar store?” Throw that phone into a garbage bin and get a proper phone” as one of them waved his expensive touch screen phone to tease me.

It all happened when I agreed to while away time at a nearby Tim Horton’s shop over a cup of coffee one Saturday evening after observation of the Sabbath.

Usually we meet on Sundays after church service to ponder over ideas to explore for all to enjoy life free of stress, crime and insecurity in Toronto.

Veteran politician J.H Mensah has died Former Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur dead Veteran politician Joseph Henry Mensah, aged 89, has died, myjoyonline. com has confirmed.

J.H Mensah, a Gold Coaster born in October 1928 is a founding member of the governing New Patriotic Party and served in three different ministerial positions under the John Agyekum Kufuor administration.

He was a former Minority leader and a Majority leader and held his last top government position in 2005 when he was appointed Senior minister

So I kept “mum” after reading the sad news of former Vice President of the Republic of Ghana Dr. Paa Kwesi Ammissah Arthur’s demise on the internet.

Everyone is wailing, singing dirge because the former vice president under the former government of the National Democratic Congress NDC in Ghana has passed away.

No one is asking whether the late former vice president time to live on this earth was up and that matter was called to eternal rest by his maker.

Some pastors, spiritualists and ordinary persons came close to finding the cause of his demise by telling us the meaning of Paa Kwesi Ammisah Arthur’s death.

But none of these pastors, spiritualists and ordinary soothsayers got close to the cause or meaning of his departure from this land of the living for good on that fateful day.

It is painful to lose a loved one whom you won’t see or meet again. But if you understand how the Supreme Ruler of this great universe operates in his law court in heaven, you will keep “mum” and give glory to God for Paa Kwesi Ammissah Arthur’s life.

Before touching on time on earth, permit me to share a young boy’s testimony to enlighten readers about the operation of the great court in heaven.

A young boy was terribly injured in a car accident. The doctors said that he should have died. Instead he was in coma for an extended period of time. When he came out of this coma he told a very intriguing story.

“While in the coma, he found himself in the courtroom of heaven. The issue being debated in the court of heaven was whether this young man should come to heaven or stay on earth and fulfill what was written in the book of life in heaven about him.

He said, there were several people that gave opinions and testimonies whether he should rest in heaven or return to continue his duties on earth.

Suddenly, a man walked into the courtroom. He had a long white beard, was very humble and began to testify as to why this young man, should be allowed to stay on earth and fulfill his destiny.

On the basis of this man’s testimony the court rendered a verdict that allowed him to return to the earth and finish his course.

It could be said that in relation of the former vice president’s demise, he went to have a work out early morning in a gym, he collapsed, was rushed to 37 military hospital and he never came back to life.

We Are Incredibly Valuable. Taking Care of You!

By Sarah Efumwaa Obeng, Toronto I feel like we are somebody extraordinarily important, and I know that we are. Every single one of is made in God’s image; we are valuable, significant and important in this life. However, not to sound partial but women are exceptionally valuable and that is the focus of this piece.

I planned writing on choices we make as women, however, the Spirit through various ways indicated I have to put together this piece of taking care of us as women. I believe we are the pivot of it all. In the past few days I have had the sheer privilege of encouraging a few ladies of the need to take great care of ourselves and not forgetting we have only one of us. There’s not a second version of us we can go get if we mishandle what we have, and we can’t go borrow someone’s ‘body’ and return it later. This same week it’s been in the news the need for women to pay attention of our wellbeing due to rise is various life threatening sicknesses. Now let’s dive in!

Imagine the world without women. Imagine society without women. Imagine Canada without women.

Imagine the leaders’ homes without women. Imagine the provinces without women.

Imagine the regions without women. Imagine the cities without women. Imagine

workplaces without women.

Imagine localities without women. Imagine neighborhoods without women. Now, imagine your family without women.

We’re incredibly invaluable. I can’t stress this enough, and it’s time for us reevaluate this and wake up to this blessing and responsibility!

It doesn’t matter what we look like on the outside, it doesn’t matter what life has thrown on us or at us. It doesn’t matter what we’ve been or gone through.

We have value and significance.

We have a responsibility of how we live our lives and how we acknowledge the value the Maker has placed on our lives, and redefine who we are, based on who the Maker says you are.

We need to be accountable for ourselves. You’ve got to like you, and you’ve got to love you, and give you the best!

LESSONS FROM AMMISSAH AUTHUR’S DEMISE For a whole sitting president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, and high dignitaries to express shock and sadness of Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur’s death should remind us that our good work would be rewarded one day.

He was eulogized as one of a long standing public servant, who discharged his duties with dignity therefore his death was unfortunate since he had a lot to contribute to the country Ghana.

PPROFILE OF PAA KWESI AMMISSAH ARTHUR Former Vice President Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur was born in Cape Coast, Central Region, in April 1951.

He started his education at Cape Coast Methodist ‘B ‘Primary School and passed

mothers, the usual thing is to put everyone else before us: children, husbands, partners, aging parents, church or social members, jobs, friends, etc.

Many of us are guilty of this.

Ever heard of ripple effect?

We end up hurting ourselves as well as those we put ahead of us and even things around us. We must to pay attention to one person foremost: You. So it’s vital to holistically take care of you. We need to be mindful others’ lives depend on ours – all the people we’re taking care of and need to be there for; we need ourselves to serve them. We require ourselves to love, care for, and be present with them, and if we’re not there several people will have negative consequences. So how can we not take care of us? How can we take care of ourselves last? We should care for us first so we can continue to be there to care for everyone else! It brings tears to my eyes when I recall how my best friend of twenty years passed because she did not carefully consider to take great care of herself, and now several people are feeling the negative consequences as a result her poor choices (that would be a whole two-part piece). The way we are will determine the way we care for those we care about.

If we’re bad, we’ll give bad care. If we’re okay, we’ll give okay care. If we’re good, we’ll give good care. If we’re great, we’ll give great care. If we’re amazing and awesome, we’ll

give same! It’s that simple.

With this backdrop it’s okay to be ‘selfish’ at times so that we can take care of ourselves and be in a great state to take care of those put in our path to be blessed by us. When we are accountable for ourselves and take best care of ourselves then everyone else will benefit from that.

How we take care of us is subjective. However, I believe these are some elements that are vital to consider; what we feed our eyes, minds, and thoughts; what we feed our bodies (nutritionally); our appearances; what we feed our feet in terms of places we go and the networks of friends or colleagues with whom we spend time.

We are what we constantly think about, and or lives go in the direction of our thoughts.

The Bible, Eph. 4:8 “… whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things”. Napoleon Hill “…thoughts are things and powerful things at that…” We can’t feed our minds irrelevant stuff and share sensible stuff with those connected to us.

It’s been said that you are what you eat, and we know

between good and bad foods.

We can’t eat anything and feed our loved ones better. What’s your favorite car? If you had a Rolls Royce, would you put any kind of fuel in it? Surely no!

So why do we put ‘anything’ in our bodies as food. Think about it for a minute! Would you not take your Rolls Royce for scheduled maintenance? So why don’t we have a scheduled maintenance for our bodies to keep them healthy and in great shape? Would you let people leave ‘anything’ in your car? So why do we feed any negative thing to our minds and thoughts? Nice clothes are good but appearances go beyond that. What’s the environment we create with our presence?

Is it demoralizing, or uplifting, encouraging, inspiring and igniting positive changes with the people around us? Let’s be mindful how much time we spend with people we will not trade places. Time is precious and we’re not living in eternity yet, so let’s leave a great mark on the people we meet and move on to fulfilling our great destinies. It’s no too late to go pursue our dreams. Don’t let them remain dreams but turn them into SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound) goals and make them realities.

When we are the awesome us, the ripple effect and positive consequences would overflow onto all those connected to us.

Now, that’s what it means to be blessed!

Paa Kwesi Ammissah Arthur, Gone for good the Common Entrance examination from the Akim Oda Methodist School in 1964.

He entered Ghana’s oldest Secondary School, Mfantsipim in Cape Coast later in 1964 and passed the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level in 1969, and the GCE Advanced Level in 1971.

He then entered the University of Ghana, Legon, in 1971, graduating with a Bachelor of Science (BSc. (Economics) degree in 1974.

He was granted a University of Ghana Post-Graduate scholarship in 1975.

In 1980 he was awarded the Master of Science MSc (Economics) d eg ree an d lectured at the Economics Department, University of Ghana, for a number of years. He also lectured at the State College of Education, Awka in Anambra State of Nigeria from 1981-1983.

In July 1983, he served as Advisor to the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning and appointed a Deputy Finance and Economic Planning Minister

in February 1986, a position he held until April 1997.

After retiring from public office in 1997, Vice President AmissahArthur continued to work on a number of consultancy jobs.

He was the Senior Economist for the Sigma One Corporation, Ghana, from 1998 to 2000 where he helped design and implement the Ghana Policy Dialogue Project, a USAID-funded project that provided advisory services to the Government of Ghana.

He also worked on the Trade and Investment Reform Project aimed at enhancing Ghana’s export competitiveness.

Between 2001 and 2002, he was contracted to execute a special assignment by the Danish Foreign Ministry.

He co-authored a review of Ghana’s public financial management system, titled: Guidance Note: Financial Integration into Relevant Ghanaian Structures, a report that has been used as a training manual for new employees at the Finance Ministry.

Former Vice President Amissah-

Arthur also worked as a private international consultant/ economist to the World Bank and some foreign countries.

As Consultant for the World Bank, he trained the staff of The Department of State for Agriculture, Republic of The Gambia in 1997 in initiating a review of the World Bank-funded Medium-term Expenditure Programme.

He was the consultant at all stages of the Netherlands Government-funded Technical/ Vocational Education project for Ghana’s Ministry of Education in association with TNW Export BV of Waalwijk, Netherlands.

He served on a number of Boards and Committees including the Boards of the Bank of Ghana, Ghana Commercial Bank, Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, Ghana

National Procurement Agency, Ghana Supply Commission, and the Academic Board and Finance Committee of the University of Ghana.

Former Vice President AmissahArthur t was appointed the Governor of the Bank of Ghana on October 01, 2009.

A soccer enthusiast and a great fan of Accra Hearts of Oak, one of the leading football teams in Ghana, and he enjoyed playing table tennis.

The former Vice President was a devoted family man and was a Christian by faith. He was married to Matilda - a marriage blessed with two adult children.

On August 6, 2012, he was sworn-in as the Vice-President of the Republic of Ghana, and served in that position until January 07, 2017.

Day of Culture observed at Ghanaian Presbyterian Church, Toronto

The congregants of Ghanaian Presbyterian Church inToronto on Sunday July, 22 nd 2018 dedicated its service to the o b s e r vance of Cultureto portray the various cultural backgrounds and traditions of Ghana. The entire congregation were radiant in their colorful

native outfits- Kente, batakari, fugu, adinkra and various African wax prints sewn in very beautiful and creative styles.

The setting was so beautiful that it appeared as if the rainbow had been transposed within the confines of the majestic sanctuary.

The chiefs and queens of the various associations within our community as well as the Royal Ghanaian House of Chiefs & Queen Mothers in North America, Toronto Chapter were not left out as they displayed our rich and unique culture in their colourful regalia.

The theme for the occasion was “Waiting on the Lord’’ taken from Psalm 145:10-16 with Osabarima La-Kumi Sasraku as the preacher. As it was Cultural Day observance, the service was in its entirety performed by Nananom from call to worship to offertory prayer.

not only a dedicated member of the Presbyterian Church but also an influential community leader. African-Canadian Youth Leaders Round Table Conference

The African-Canadian Social Development Council (ACDC) sponsored anAfrican-Canadian Youth Leaders Round Table Conference at the North York Civic Center on Saturday June 30th, 2018. The theme for the conference was “Bringing out the leader in you”. The panelists were Mr. Rocco AcheampongTorontolawyer and, Ms. Jamila Aman who is a community activist and a founding member of the ACDC.

The moderator for the event, Ms. Anna Aidoo, Executive Director of Endless Possibilities introduced the President of ACDC, Mr. Kabu Asante who in his remarks stated the purpose of the roundtable conference whichwas to create an environment for the formation of a strong African Youth Leadership to establish them and thrive as the future is theirs. He concluded that the African-Canadian Social

Development Council is there to support the youth to achieve their objectives.

Ghana-Canada Day celebration at Living Word Assembly of God

In what was officially a Canada Day celebration, but Living Word Assembly of God combined the best of Ghanaian and Canadian culture for their annual Ghana/Canada Day service.

From the sea of people in the congregation wearing their best kente cloths, to the numerous mini Ghana flags flying in the crowd, chances are if you were at Living Word Assembly of God this Canada Day you legitimately wondered if it was also Ghana’s

independence Day, which for the record falls on March 6th but it’s Ghana’s Republic Day. The nature of the celebration was most definitely a step towards the church’s ultimate goal of becoming a multicultural church in the near future.

Members of the church were asked to come in either their best traditional Ghanaian clothes or wearing red and white representing Canada. However, church leadership took it a step further,

acknowledging a slew of other nations by decorating the stage wall with a range of foreign flags. The mix of people wearing the vibrant kente colors and display of flags made for a beautiful ascetic.

While the day was in large a celebration, featuring music from the church’s talented praise and worship team at Living Word, the preaching was also equally as powerful, the theme was “Arise and build” and the Word was given by Rev. Chris Essandor of

Assembly of God Ghana .

As we approach the second half of the year, Living Word still manages to embody their 2018 theme in everything they do, “Arise.”This is evident from how the church continues to strive and be progressive with their future always in mind. One can only imagine what future Canada Day celebrations at living Word will look like; as there is no doubt that they will reach their goal of becoming multi-cultural in the near future.

Frankly Speaking Recent crisis in Ghana’s Police Service exposes weaknesses in Security Services By: Dr. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB

The Ghana Police Service has been hot in the news over the past couple of weeks for all the wrong reasons. The Service, the number one institution with responsibility for the maintenance of law and order in the country has been under pressure, intense public criticisms and scrutiny of their tactics of engagement with the public. Over the past eight months, about twenty people suspected to be armed robbers have been shot and killed by the police across the country. The latest of such actions happened at the small town of Poano near Anhwia Nkwanta on the Kumasi-Obusai road where the Police shot and killed seven young men the police suspected to be armed robbers. Incidentally and mind-boggling, all the seven men were from the same neighborhood called Asawasi in the Ashanti Regional capital. The incident sparked intense outrage among the people of that neighborhood, especially the youth who have launched reprisal attacks on the police in the Kumasi Metropolis. It took the intervention of the Inspector General of Police himself, the Asantehene Nana Osei Tutu II and some top government officials

to calm down the rising tensions of the residents who maintain that the young victims were not armed robbers but were executed “without provocation” from the Police. They have accused the police of excessive brutality of innocent citizens.

In he midst of the raging crisis in the Asawasi neighborhood, the wrong side of the Ghana Police was again exposed in a series of brutalities meted out to defenceless citizens. On Thursday July 18th, 2018, a stoutly-built Police Officer was caught on video brutally assaulting a middle-aged woman carrying a baby. Her “crime”? She had gone to a Bank, Midland Savings and Loans Ltd. At Shiashie, a suburb of Accra to withdraw her money. The Bank refused to provide her requested service with a lame excuse that their “network” was down. When the desperate

woman who claimed to be starved of ash to purchase food for her young grandchild pleaded with the Bank officials to find some money for her, they ordered the Police security guard on duty at the Bank to force the woman out of the Bank premises. The strongly-build Police officer with an AK47 riffle strapped around his shoulders subjected the woman to intense assault. A short video of this senseless and shocking police brutality went viral around the world and the Police have been reeling to explain the behavior of one of its own.

Four days after the Bank assault incident, the Police were again in the news for another disturbing wrong reason. A police officer escorting a Bank Bullion van carrying money ran into a group of mourners who were in a procession to bury a family member at a cemetery near Somanya in the Eastern Region of Ghana. For whatever reason, the Police escort officer decided to fire “warning shots” to disperse and clear the mourners from the road to let the “cash” van pass.

In the process, his “warning shot” killed the driver of the very van he was escorting and “protecting”. Another wahala and public outcry against the police have again erupted.

presentation. She spoke about developing social entrepreneurship and innovation ideas as well as helping organizations b u i l d c a p a c i t y. S h e added that she has connected lots of youth for internship in Africa.

She also touched on crisis- opportunities and hope. She revealedthat Toronto Housing is home to 164,000 residents of which more than 65% of black residents are female single mothers which translates into 65% of economic and political powers which can be utilized. These are opportunities that can be put into good use.

Youth gun violence, poverty, less opportunities for people of African descent, and black youth facing racism and microaggressions are part of the crisis that should be addressed. The hope, according to Ms. Aman, is a new vision is needed

to deal with the current crises. She added that we have to stop being a consumer society and begin to think as investor society, create activities that unite us instead of just talking about it and lastly snap out of self-sabotage and focus on education, business and community to become resilient youth.

She concluded that we have to patronize our community.

Mr. Rocco Acheampong on his part stated that opportunities in Canada are limitless. The only thing that really matters in the western world is capital. He spoke about the legal aspect of starting medical marijuana business as an example. According to him, Canadian history has not been favorable to blacks and it will not stop.

He urged the delegatesto be united as a community.

“Economic power is when you will be taken care of.

We have to take action

and not mere words,” he pointed out. Another point he shared was that the youth should cultivate the habit of reading to broaden theirknowledge.

He shared his thoughts on investment and advocacy as a lawyer.

The second part started after break for lunch with the discussion of various topics. Prominent among them were: Political representation, Youth in the criminal system, innovation / entrepreneurship, mental health and mentorship.

After that the delegates were broken into groups to discuss the topics.

WhatsApp groups were then also created to work on the topics discussed and to build on them.

It was decided that the next meeting will elect officers to steer the affairs of the organization. The next meeting will take place at the same venue on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 9.00a.m.

Next, the police in a town in the Western Region was accused for brutally assaulting a fourteen year-old school pupil for “disobedience”. H was subjected to thirty-six lashes ant his back on the orders of the Divisional Police Commander who claimed to be “teaching the pupil a lesson for disobedience”.

The list goes on and on.

However, these strings of police brutalities and perceived excesses have exposed and bring into question what is really wrong with the security forces in Ghana: the police, military, immigration service and the revenue collection services.

A number of things need to be done within these services to avoid some of these disturbing actions exposed recently in the police and other security services.The first major issue to look at is the whole Recruitment Processes into the security services. The recruitment processes into the security services in the country may seem have always been couched in political polarization. I Have followed the recruitment processes into the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, and the Immigration Service over the years and the politicization, nepotism and corruption around the recruitment is frightening. Intelligence, actual qualifications and competence do not really matter. What matters are political connections, religious and ethnic affiliations and what is popularly known in Ghana as the “right connections” to “big people” and other powerful invisible hands in society who all who “quotas” when it comes to recruitment of personnel into the security services. In the process, the services are filled with people who have little to no qualifications or the right attitudes and aptitudes to the services they are joining.

The results are what we are witnessing today.

What this situation presents is that society is saddled with people in uniform to satisfy the quest of job security and not necessarily the exhibition of passion, love of country and commitment to duty and service. The solution to this is making sure that entry into the security services is

based on merits, and right aptitudes and not subject to the whims and caprices of people with power, connections and influence.

There is an urgent need to stamp out these institutionalized processes of compromised recruitment processes into the security services in Ghana.

Competence and right aptitude and attitudes must be highly prioritized because of the glaring adverse effects some of which have been exposed now. Recruiting and staffing the security services with ill-motivated personnel in uniform is dangerous and lays the foundationsfor increases in crime rates and other security breaches. It is important for our politicians, religious and ethnic leaders as well as people with “connections” to power and influence to note that our security services cannot be reduced to an extension of ‘job for the boys’ and be treated as business as usual.

The security chiefs and heads must also exemplify the integrity the service demands and speak the truth to power when need be no matter what it may cost them. It has always been cover-ups and not rocking the boat, or the need to protect their own when it comes to wrong doing by people in the security services in the country.

The process of appointment of service chiefs is another area of concern in Ghana. It is human nature for appointees to have an elevated version of a subordinate/superior relationship with the appointing authority. The extent of authority given to the Presidency under the 1992 Constitution presents a situation whereby nothing ‘important’ can be done without the consent of His Excellency the President of the Republic. At certain levels, the appointment of high profile security chiefs and senior officers shifts from the structural promotional process to ‘political appointments’ which subtly pushes their allegiance to the State into the widely opened arms of politicians.This kind of system of allegiance to politicians and not the state has created serious problems within the security services

in Ghana. The process fuels and fans political polarization in the security services which could be problematic if not curtailed with proper reforms. We are all aware of what happens to security chiefs anytime there is a change of government, irrespective of how good they were, they are quickly sacked or replaced. This does no good to morale in the top echelons of the security services.

We should also be looking at capacity building for the security services. Due to the changing nature of security situations and threats around the world, it is prudent to consistently engage the police force in capacity building activities to put them in the best position to fight crime in diverse ways. We have had situations in the past where people in robbery situations have had zero help from the police after placing distress calls. Sometimes victims in stressful situations are asked by the police to provide transport before they shown up to assist. There have also been situations where the approach employed by the police in crowd control during demonstrations have resulted in several casualties and falls short of professionalism. Having periodic capacity building and training programs for our service men to match up current trends is a sure way to go.Crime changes with the passage of time and gets more sophisticated. As such, the security services need to constantly institutionalize periodic capacity building opportunities.

Ghana needs to have proper reforms in our state institutions especially the security services by putting in place a robust recruitment process, amending the relevant laws to ameliorate political polarization, retooling the police, implementation of better conditions of service, upholding professional standards, capacity building and a solid witness protection policy. This is the only way for the police to enjoy the trust and confidence of the public it is paid to serve and protect. This will be to the benefit of the whole society.

Night shifts put your brain and gut clocks out of whack Shocking shift Night shift workers face increased risks of cancer, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.

Now scientists say the reason may lie in ticking time keepers not in our brain as previously thought, but in the gut.

Working the graveyard shift can wreak havoc on the body’s finely-tune rhythms. Just as jet setters who fly across the oceans may feel out of sorts with digestive discomfort, researchers are learning more about how shift works puts our clocks out of whack and can be damaging over the long term.

When we looked at the rhythms in those metabolites we saw something we had never seen before and it was actually it was shocking to us.- Hans Van Dongen Prof. Hans Van Dongen is a co-senior author of a new study into how people process food differently during shift work.

The researchers had volunteers follow a simulated night shift schedule in the lab or a day shift for three days. Scientists carefully controlled conditions like light, temperature and feeding schedule so they’d be able to measure what rhythms our bodies produce naturally.

“When we looked at the rhythms in those metabolites, we saw something we had never seen before and it actually was shocking to us,”

said Van Dongen, a professor in the College of Medicine and director of the Sleep and Performance Research Center at Washington State University.

If it was midnight in the lab, the brain would be forwarded a couple of hours to 2 a.m., which matches what scientists expected from previous research. But they found signs that the clocks in the gut, liver and pancreas were much further ahead, as if it was noon.

Gut’s mind of its own Van Dongen said it’s as if the clocks in the digestive system have a “mind of their own.”

At the University of Surrey, the study’s first author Debra Skene used a new technique to analyze blood samples from the 14 participants. Her team looked for a suite of metabolites, or remnants from digesting food.

metabolite findings shed light on why night shift workers might not be able to use glucose, the body’s go to source of energy, properly.

When the body faces an imbalance of glucose, it can create problems for tissues, muscles and organs.

Meal timing strategy What’s more, he said if metabolites are left in the blood too long then it can cause damage to DNA. If the timing of DNA repair is out whack that could explain why shift workers face an increase risk of getting cancer.

He points to two potential research strategies to help shift workers to adapt: Change the sleep-wake schedule to introduce strategic overnight naps.

Shift the feeding schedule so overnight workers eat before they go to bed during the day.

To see which possibility works, researchers first need to tease apart what exactly causes the biological clocks to switch.

In the meantime, Van Dongen said the findings does add credibility to the general advice overseas travellers get to try to eat and sleep as the locals do as soon as possible.

Late Dinners Could Increase The Risk Of Breast And Prostate Cancer, Study Finds Time to rethink those dinner reservations.

New Spanish research has found that eating your evening meal earlier, or leaving an interval of at least two hours before going to bed, is linked with a lower risk of breast and prostate cancer.

Carried out by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), a center supported by the la Caixa Banking Foundation, the new study looked at 621 patients with prostate cancer and 1,205 with breast cancer, as well as 872 male and 1,321 female control participants to see if the timing of meals was associated with risk of the two cancers.

The researchers interviewed the participants on timing of meals, sleep, and chronotype — which is whether an individual shows a natural preference for morning or evening activity.

Participants were also asked to complete a Food Frequency Questionnaire to look at their dietary habits and adherence to cancer prevention recommendations.

The results showed that participants who waited two or more hours after dinner before sleeping had around a 20 per cent lower risk of breast or prostate cancer compared with subjects who slept immediately after.

Eating dinner before 9 p.m. also had a similar protective effect when compared with eating the evening meal after 10 p.m.

The positive effect of leaving a longer interval between dinner and sleep was also more pronounced among participants who adhered to cancer prevention recommendations and in those who were morning types.

The study is the first to analyze the association between cancer risk and the timing of meals and sleep, with previous research focusing instead on dietary patterns, for example, the effects of eating red meat, fruit and vegetables and the associations between food intake and obesity, rather than the timing of food.

“Our study concludes that adherence to diurnal eating patterns is associated with a lower risk of cancer,” com-

mented lead author Manolis Kogevinas, adding that the findings “highlight the importance of assessing circadian rhythms in studies on diet and cancer.”

Dora Romaguera, the last author of the study, also noted that, “Further research in humans is needed in order to understand the reasons behind these findings, but everything seems to indicate that the timing of sleep affects our capacity to metabolize food. Animal experimental evidence has shown that the timing of food intake has ‘profound implications for food metabolism and health.’”

If the findings are confirmed, Kogevinas added that, “they will have implications for cancer prevention recommendations, which currently do not take meal timing into account.”

“The impact could be especially important in cultures such as those of southern Europe, where people have supper late.”

The results can be found published online in the International Journal of Cancer.

Heart disease and cancer kill more people in developing nations than in Western countries Peer-reviewed? Yes Type of study: Review Diseases such as cancer, heart disease and stroke are deadlier in the developing world than in rich nations.

This is the finding of a new analysis from researchers at Imperial College London.

The paper, published in the journal Nature, revealed that death rates in low and middle income tropical countries from so-called non-communicable diseases (NCDs), are higher than from NCDs in Western countries.

Non-communicable disease are defined as conditions that cannot pass from person-to-person and include cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, kidney and liver disease, neurological conditions such as dementia, and mental health disorders.

Professor Majid Ezzati, lead author of the analysis from the School of Public Health at Imperial, said: “The classic portrayal of disease in poor countries is one of infections and parasites, and not conditions such as cancer and heart disease which people associate with wealthy nations. However this is not the case, and low income countries suffer more from chronic conditions than richer countries.”

Among other findings, the new analysis revealed death rates from heart disease in low and middle income tropical countries were higher than that of high income countries – at least 90 deaths per 100,000 people compared to 61 deaths per 100,000 people. Stroke death rates were also much higher – at least 49 deaths per 100,000 compared to 22 per 100,000.

The research also found that cervical, stomach, and liver cancers had higher death rates in low and middle income tropical countries than in Western nations. The team say many of these cancers are in fact due to bacteria or viruses. For example, almost all cervical cancer cases are due to the human papilloma virus.

Diabetes death rates were also higher in low and middle income tropical countries compared to wealthier nations – at least 32 deaths per 100,000 compared to 11 per 100,000.

The team analysed international mortality data in Western countries, and compared this with data from low and middle-income tropical countries. These were defined as any country that had half or more of their land area between

the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, and included most countries in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean (around 80 countries in total). Death rates were adjusted for age differences across the various countries.

The researchers found that of the 25.3 million deaths in these tropical regions in 2016, 34 per cent were from infectious and parasitic diseases, conditions surrounding pregnancy and birth, and nutritional deficiencies - while 55 per cent were from non-communicable diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Non-communicable diseases account for 90 per cent of all deaths in high income Western countries.

One of the reasons for higher death rates from chronic diseases in low-income countries is due to these diseases being detected at a later, more advanced, stage, and less effective treatments being available compared to high-income Western countries.

Cardiovascular diseases, especially heart disease and stroke, were one of the biggest killers in low and middle income countries, with nearly one in four deaths due to the condition. High blood pressure is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The team state that blood pressure is higher in low and middle-income nations than in Western countries, with the highest levels of blood pressure found in subSaharan Africa.

The team acknowledge that some nations in their analysis have more robust data than others – yet the overall picture remains clear.

“The persistent large burden of cancer and heart disease deaths in developing nations is due to a range of factors – for instance smoking and alcohol use are on the rise in low and middle-income countries, which would certainly play a role. But this is ultimately a story of poverty, poor housing and nutrition, and inadequate healthcare that mean diseases such as heart disease and cancer are diagnosed late, and then the treatments offered are inadequate,” said Professor Ezzati.

The team outline 25 evidence-based recommendations for reducing noncommunicable diseases in low and middle income countries, including measures to reduce alcohol and tobacco consumption, better housing, and more resources for detecting disease at an early stage and treating it.

Artificial sweeteners: Understanding these and other sugar substitutes Whether your goal is cutting calories or eating healthier, options for sugar substitutes abound. Understand their pros and cons to make an informed choice.

Today, artificial sweeteners and other sugar substitutes are found in a variety of food and beverages marketed as “sugar-free” or “diet,” including soft drinks, chewing gum, jellies, baked goods, candy, fruit juice and ice cream. In addition, other sugar substitutes are being touted as healthier sweeteners than regular sugar, even if they don’t have fewer calories, such as honey and agave nectar.

Artificial sweeteners are synthetic sugar substitutes but may be derived from naturally occurring substances, including herbs or sugar itself. Artificial sweeteners are also known as intense sweeteners because they are many times sweeter than regular sugar.

Artificial sweeteners that are currently approved by Health Canada include: Acesulfame potassium (Sunett, Sweet One),Aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet),Saccharin (Sugar Twin, Sweet’N Low), and Sucralose (Splenda) Uses for artificial sweeteners Artificial sweeteners are attractive alternatives to sugar because they add virtually no calories to your diet.

In addition, you need only a fraction compared with the amount of regular sugar you would normally use for sweetness. Artificial sweeteners are widely used in processed products, including tabletop sweeteners, baked goods, soft drinks, powdered drink mixes, candy, puddings, canned foods, jams and jellies, dairy products, and scores of other foods and beverages. Check the food label to see if a product contains artificial sweeteners.

Artificial sweeteners are also popular for home use. Some can even be used in baking or cooking. Certain recipes may need modification, though, because artificial sweeteners provide no bulk or volume, as does sugar. Check the labels on artificial sweeteners for appropriate home use.

Some artificial sweeteners may leave an aftertaste. You may need to experiment with artificial sweeteners to find one or a combination that you enjoy most.

Possible health benefits of artificial sweeteners * Weight control. One of the most appealing aspects of artificial sweeteners is that they are non-nutritive — they have virtually no calories. In contrast, each gram of regular table sugar contains 4 calories. A teaspoon of sugar is about 4 grams. For perspective, consider that one 12-ounce can of a sweetened cola contains 8 teaspoons of added sugar, or about 130 calories. If you’re trying to lose weight or prevent weight gain, products sweetened with artificial sweeteners rather than with higher calorie table sugar may be an attractive option. On the other hand, some research has suggested that consuming artificial sweeteners may be associated with increased weight, but the cause is not yet known. * Diabetes. Artificial sweeteners may be a good alternative to sugar if you have diabetes. Unlike sugar, artificial sweeteners generally don’t raise blood sugar levels because they are not carbohydrates. But because of concerns about how sugar substitutes are labeled and categorized, always check with your doctor or dietitian about using any sugar substitutes if you have diabetes. * Dental cavities. Unlike sugar, artificial sweeteners don’t contribute to tooth decay.

Possible health concerns with artificial sweeteners Artificial sweeteners have been the subject of intense scrutiny for decades. Critics of artificial sweeteners say that they cause a variety of health problems, including cancer. That’s largely because of studies dating to the 1970s that linked saccharin to bladder cancer in laboratory rats. Because of those studies, saccharin once carried a warning label that it may be hazardous to your health.

But according to the National Cancer Institute and other health agencies, there’s no sound scientific evidence that any of the artificial sweeteners approved for use in the United States cause cancer or other serious health problems. And numerous research studies confirm that artificial sweeteners are generally safe in limited quantities, even for pregnant women. As a result of the newer studies, the warning label for saccharin was dropped.

Artificial sweeteners are regulated by the FDA as food additives. They must be reviewed and approved by the FDA before being made available for sale. In some cases, the FDA declares a substance “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS). These GRAS substances, including highly refined stevia preparations, are deemed by qualified professionals based on scientific data as being safe for their intended use, or they have such a lengthy history of common use in food that they’re considered generally safe and don’t require FDA approval before sale.

The FDA has also established an acceptable daily intake (ADI) for each artificial sweetener. This is the maximum amount considered safe to consume each day over the course of your lifetime. ADIs are intended to be about 100 times less than the smallest amount that might cause health concerns. * Sugar alcohols and novel sweeteners Sugar alcohols (polyols) are carbohydrates that occur naturally in certain fruits and vegetables, but they also can be manufactured. They’re not considered intense sweeteners, because they aren’t sweeter than sugar — in fact, some are less sweet than sugar. Sugar alcohols aren’t considered noncaloric or nonnutritive sweeteners because they contain calories. But they’re lower in calories than is regular sugar, making them an attractive alternative. Despite their name, sugar alcohols aren’t alcoholic. They don’t contain ethanol, which is found in alcoholic beverages.

Novel sweeteners are combinations of various types of sweeteners. Novel sweeteners, such as stevia, are hard to fit into one particular category because of what they’re made from and how they’re made.

As with artificial sweeteners, the FDA regulates the use of sugar alcohols. Approved sugar alcohols and novel sweeteners include: Erythritol,Hydrogenated starch hydrolysates,Isomalt,Lactitol,Maltitol,Mannitol,,Sorbitol,Xylitol Uses for sugar alcohols Sugar alcohols generally aren’t used when you prepare food at home. Rather, they are found in many processed foods and other products, usually replacing sugar on an equal basis. When added to foods, sugar alcohols add sweetness, bulk and texture. They also help food stay moist, prevent browning when heated, and add a cooling sensation to products.

Sugar alcohols are used in a broad range of products, including chocolate, candy, frozen desserts, chewing gum, toothpaste, mouthwash, baked goods and fruit spreads. Sugar alcohols are often combined with artificial sweeteners in products to enhance sweetness. Check the food label to help see if a product contains sugar alcohols. Food labels may list the specific name, such as xylitol, or simply use the general term “sugar alcohol.”

Possible health benefits of sugar alcohols Weight control. Sugar alcohols are considered nutritive sweeteners because they contribute calories to your diet. Still, sugar alcohols have fewer calories than does regular sugar — about 2 calories per gram on average. This means that sugar alcohols can be considered lower calorie sweeteners, and they may aid weight-control efforts. * Diabetes. Unlike artificial sweeteners, sugar alcohols can raise blood sugar levels because they’re carbohydrates. But because your body doesn’t completely absorb sugar alcohols, their effect on blood sugar is less than that of other sugars. Different sugar alcohols can affect blood sugar differently. You can consume sugar alcohols if you have diabetes but you still must pay attention to the total amount of carbohydrates in your meals and snacks. Talk to your doctor or dietitian for guidance. * Dental cavities. Sugar alcohols don’t promote cavities.

Possible health concerns with sugar alcohols As with artificial sweeteners, the FDA regulates sugar alcohols as food additives. Sugar alcohols typically are labeled as “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) and don’t require FDA approval before sale.

There are few health concerns associated with sugar alcohols. When eaten in large amounts, usually more than 50 grams but sometimes as little as 10 grams, sugar alcohols can have a laxative effect, causing bloating, intestinal gas and diarrhea. Product labels may carry a warning about this potential laxative effect.

Moderation is key with artificial sweeteners and sugar substitutes When choosing sugar substitutes, it pays to be a savvy consumer. Get informed and look beyond the hype. While artificial sweeteners and sugar substitutes may help with weight management, they aren’t a magic bullet and should be used only in moderation. With several issues of potential tension with new Ontario Premier Doug Ford, LeBlanc said the federal and provincial governments share a common interest in strengthening the economy and creating more jobs.

“There’ll be a lot more, I think, that we have in common than we may disagree on, and my job will be to work with all of these leaders in a way that advances the interests of Canadians,” he said.

The cabinet shakeup boosts the number of ministers from Ontario and Quebec, where the Liberals need to win more seats in the next election to offset potential losses elsewhere.

Blair’s new portfolio comes after a heated exchange between Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen and Ontario’s new provincial minister in charge of the file, Lisa MacLeod.

Today, MacLeod welcomed Blair to the post in a tweet, offering her congratulations and asking to meet soon.

Raitt said the appointment of a third minister to deal with the border issue is proof the government is failing on the file, and said Trudeau is trying to deflect by engaging in a “war of words.”

“If the prime minister wants to characterize it in some kind of battle of semantics, that’s going to be his desire to do so,” she said. “I’m not going to engage on that level with him. What I ask of him is a plan and a way to fix the problem that we have currently, to give everybody assurances that our system is fair and it works.”

Putting best players on pitch The timing of today’s shuffle gives Trudeau an opportunity to put his best players on the pitch before the campaign, said David Moscrop, a political scientist at Simon Fraser University. With no significant scandals or major blunders raging, it makes sense for the prime minister to keep key ministers in place while lightly demoting underperformers and promoting up-and-comers.

Before today’s shuffle there were 30 members of cabinet, including Trudeau, evenly split by gender. The new cabinet has 35 members including Trudeau, with 17 women and 18 men.

Former Conservative prime minister Stephen Harper appointed 26 members to his first cabinet in 2006. By the time his government lost power in 2015, there were 39 ministers.

Trudeau’s first major cabinet shakeup was on Jan. 10, 2017, when he appointed Freeland to Foreign Affairs as part of a strategy to bolster the front-line ministers who deal with the Trump administration. As part of that overhaul, veteran ministers John McCallum and Stéphane Dion were left out of the circle and instead offered diplomatic posts.

Miss Ghanaian-Canadian Queen Zina Isaach heads to Accra, Ghana

The reigning Queen of Miss Ghanaian-Canadian Pageant 2017 Miss Zina Issach will be attending this year’s African Youth Governance Conference in Accra, Ghana from August 5th to 15th.

Miss Zina Iassch’s attendance to this conference is part of her 1st prize winning package. Miss Ghanaian-Canadian Pageant 2017 was held at the Living Arts Center, Square One, Mississauga, ON. Seven Beautiful young and smart girls vied to be crowned as 2017 Queen after going through countless hours of rehearsals.

Zina Isaach, 22 year old nurse now attending University of Western Ontario, Oshawa for Registered Nursing Degree was crowned the Queen.

Speaking to the Ghanaian News during the pre-judging segment Zina promised to use her influence to promote Cancer awareness in Ghana if crowned Queen. Now that she is the Queen she is putting into action the promise she made.

My 22 Pieces Of Advice For Our Fresh College Graduates From Voice of Reason In fact, I have been pushed literally, by the current events in the nation—to write a piece specifically—to address our newly-minted college graduates.

Why am I focusing too much attention on this particular segment of the society whereas the real culprits of our problems---the politicians, civic leaders and policies makers — filth our airwaves, news outlets and political corridors with their diatribes every day?

Given the current tone of the national discussions across the political corridors, lack of meaningful employment avenues and other moral deficiencies in our system, it will be a disservice to our nation and the graduates themselves, if I didn’t focus my comments on them, since their needs and challenges are vastly different and difficult from their contemporaries who were born on the other side of the Atlantic ocean or those born in Ghana in the sixties and seventies.

To start with, I want you to understand something very basic: The future workforce is going to be competing with machines and other workforce around the world for jobs. And, nine times out of ten you will work for someone, unless you’re going to inherit a company from your parents.

With all that in mind, this brings us to my advice: 1. It’s hard to change your reputation so develop one that you can be proud of. When you give your word, keep it without exception. And, focus on your accomplishment.

2. Be punctual.If you can’t be anything else in life; at least, you can be on time. Be on time and be where you supposed to be when you’re expected to be. Excuse won’t get you far. I usually arrive at my appointments or meetings 15 minutes early, just to make up for all those Ghanaians (including our politicians and community leaders) whose clocks are permanently set on “African Time”—whatever that means! Oh sure, everybody in Ghana (except those who have spent the major part of their lives abroad) is chronically late, but hey, they can afford to be—you can’t! You’re just a new entrant to the job market.

3. Be a trustworthy and keep your mouth shut more often than open. Be a person who can keep company’s secrets and can be counted on.

4. Take any job very serious because you never know when and where your breakthrough will pop up.

5. Learn more than it’s required of you about the job you have been given. And, go extra miles for your employer. That means be a kind of worker the

employer can’t afford to let you go and the customers can’t live without your services.

6. Ask your boss what the single most important thing about your job, and then make sure it gets done. Every day you should focus on that one thing, if nothing else gets done, make sure that one thing gets done.

7. Don’t be an obnoxious. When you screw up, admit it right away. Ask for forgiveness and get back to work. And dress appropriately without showing your body parts. Remember, people will treat you the way you teach them to treat you and how you dress is one of the clues.

8. Remeber that you work for someone else, and that person pays you, therefore he/she has the right to say what you do, when you do it, and how you do it. You have the right to make suggestions but your superior has the final say in all matters.

8. It’s too early to whine about conditions you have no control over because ninety-percent of people don’t want to hear and ,the other ten- percent is glad it’s you who is going through hell.

9. Friendship of co-workers is a bonus; it is not required or expected of you to make friends on the job. Remember everyone wants you to be successful, but not more successful than they are.

10. Don’t take anything that you didn’t earn by honest labor. In other words, if you’re going to take a bribe, remember we now live in Anas era. If you start your career with bribe you will eventually end up taking bribes till retirement time.

11. Learn to live with the consequences of your actions. Don’t talk on the phone, text, and send tons of messages while you supposed to be working if you don’t want to be fired.

12. Think big—think of the impossibilities. Since you are going to be thinking anyway, you might as well think BIG. If your dreams are not bigger than you, you’re probably not living up to your potentials. I don’t mean you should build castles in the air, but all great achievers thought of the impossibilities and they are all dreamers. Dreamers are those who create their own future. There is no future in working for someone else forever. The only way to see the ‘promised land’ is to create your own business.

13. Take care of your brains and your body. Read more about your career and constantly improve yourself academically. Reading is the food for your brains. Also make use of positive advice from your boss—for any person who will not use other people’s positive thought or others’ brain powers has no brain of his own.

14. Serve the customer well—whether you call the

customer a client, patient, student, reader, spectator or boss. Your reward in life is direct proportion to the service you render to your customers. That means where and how you’re going to live your life is linked to how well you serve your ‘customers’.

15. Do the right thing—no matter what! It might be unpopular, time –consuming and very embarrassing .You never have to ask if it’s the right thing or it isn’t.

And, don’t kid yourself; you always know the right thing to do—it’s rarely the easy thing to do.

16. Don’t be a“Post office employee” .In other words, don’t expect your employers to make you rich if you are constantly keeping them broke. Post office employers are not motivated by any need or desire to produce a profit for their employer. I doubt if there is a single post office employee who cares whether the government makes a profit or operates at a deficit.

Such attitude is fatal to any business.

17. Don’t be an economic illiterate—the person who does the least and demands the most. Be cost –conscious and profit-minded and show your loyalty to your employer.

18. Customers are short on tolerance and have very long memories. They have the money, so give them what they want, and they will share it with you. The best advertisement is a satisfied customer with a big mouth.

19. Your employers will pay little attention to what you have to say—in fact most won’t believe what you have to say. However, they will pay attention to see if you believe what you have to say by your actions.

20. Discover your uniqueness, and learn to exploit it in the service of others or your ‘customers’. The tragedies of civilization is overwhelming majority of people drift aimlessly through life, without the slightest conception of work for which they best suited, and with no idea of even the need for a define objective toward which to strive.

21. If you’re currently dancing to a different tune it’s perhaps you’re hearing a different beat of your drummer. If you’re spending your time with a crowd that is content with mediocrity—those who say,” It can’t be done” or “no one in the past has ever done it”, then you need to change the music or drummer, ASAP! 22. If someone is honestly (and legally) doing better than you in anything, it’s most likely he/she is working harder than you or doing positive things in life that you hate to do.

Method 1. Dry roast your seed on medium heat in a pan for about 6-8 min. It will start to make a popping sound when it is cooked. Or to be sure, you can break one, it should be lightly brown on the inside.

2. Pour into your blender or food processor. Add 1 and 3/4 cups of water and blend into a smooth paste.

3. Pour into a strainer and strain to separate juice from chafe.

Our ancestors may have used the bread as a wrap for roasted meat. Thus, as well as being the oldest bread, it may also have been the oldest sandwich.

The find, from the Black Desert in Jordan, pushes back the first evidence for bread by more than 5,000 years.

The stone age bread-makers took flour made from wild wheat and barley, mix it with the pulverised roots of plants, added water, and then baked it.

2.Rinse and pick over the beans, removing any stones or discolored beans, then put them in a saucepan, cover them with at least an inch of water, bring it to a boil and boil for 2 minutes, then remove it from the heat and let it sit for an hour. Then, drain off the water and put fresh water in, bring it to a boil, and cook until tender, about an hour.

3.While the beans are simmering, prepare the onion and other ingredients.

4.Heat the oil in a frying pan, add the onion and saute for about 4 minutes 5.Add pepper and tomato paste, allow to cook for 10 minutes 6.Add the seasonings and fry a few more minutes over medium heat.

7.Remove any skin and bones and add the smoked fish, stir, and add the beans (without the water). A little water from the pot may be added if the stew cooks down too much. After simmering for about 10 minutes. Check the seasonings (especially the salt and pepper) and adjust to taste. Break the fish up to pieces as the stew cooks down.

8.Add the cooked beans to the stew when the sauce on the beans is quit thick and lower the heat 9.Peel the plantain and slice them into equal sizes as possible 10. Deep fry the plantain 11.Remove plantain from hot oil and pass through a colander when golden brown 12.Serve red red with gari or rice.

Analysed under the microscope, the bread samples showed tell-tale signs of grinding, sieving and kneading.

Dr Amaia Arranz-Otaegui of the University of Copenhagen, who discovered the remains of the bread, said it was the last thing they expected to find at the site.

“Bread is a powerful link between our past and present food cultures,” she said.

“It connects us with our prehistoric ancestors.”

The bread would have been made in several stages, including “grinding cereals and club-rush tubers to obtain fine flour, mixing of flour with water to produce dough, and baking the dough in the hot ashes of a fireplace or in a hot flatstone”, she explained.

around the world. The principle aims of the annual convention are to facilitate greater awareness among community members, tostrengthen ties and to promote peace.

The theme for this year was “Pathway to Peace” initiative- Nine essential principles for world peace were the highlights at the JalsaSalana which was officially launched.

The campaign provides extensive and pragmatic solutions for the world to achieve peace based on the teachings of Islam as presented by the World Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at the Caliph, His Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad.

On Friday, 6 July, a press conference was held which wasattended by alot of local and international media outlets including Ghanaian News.

After speeches by the leaders, the reporters on hand were given an opportunity to ask questions which were duly answered. Muslim Television Ahmadiyya Canada, a division of the world’s largest global Muslim TV channel, live-streamed the proceedings of the complete convention to audience across the globe.

Politicians from all the three level of government as well as distinguished community leaders who attended the JalsaSalana endorsed the Pathway to Peace campaign. They included Hon Ahmed Hussen, Federal Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister and the Federal NDP leader Mr. Jagmeet Singh.

This year, the prestigious Sir Muhammad Zafrulla Khan Award went to former Premier of Saskatchewan Brad Wall. Other groups andindividuals were also honored at the convention with plaques. Awards for academicfeats were also given out to deserving students.

Distinguished guests were given the opportunity to speak at the convention.

Some of the topics addressedat the convention were “Emerging Societal challenges and their solutions”, “The Great Comet of 1882-A Celestial Sign for the Promised Messiah”, “Are Our Possessions and Children Not but a Trial for Us?” “Timely marriagea citadel against contemporary challenges”.

Over 20,000 people attended the 3-day conference according to the organizers. The conference is the longest running Muslim conference.

Lara González Carretero, from the UCL Institute of Archaeology, who is an expert on prehistoric bread, examined the 24 crumbs under an electron microscope.

“This would be a bread made of wild wheat and wild barley flour, mixed with water, and cooked on a hearth on a fireplace,” she said.

“There’s also the addition of wild tuber flour into it which gives a slightly nutty, bitter flavour to it.”

“The government’s flagship prorammes of food planting, 1 district 1 factory, 1 village 1 dam, are all opportunities which diasporans can take advantage of”.

He concluded by stressing that the President of Ghana wants the country beyond aid as aid does not develop a country. He then wished Nana Daafuor ayekoo. The mission presented some drinks to Nana Obeng Daafuor II. There were also presentations by the Ghanaian-Canadian Truckers Association, Okwahu Adonteng Association and Mrs. Janet Obeng, wife of Nana Obeng Daafuor II. Nana Obeng Daafuor II in his royal speech thanked all and stated that he is not there for only Kwahus but all Ghanaians.

signatories to the said Agreement to commence discussions on the creation of the continental customs union.

Amb. Ocheger added that the launching of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), by the African Union, is another milestone that Uganda and Ghana can leverage to promote trade relations as well as increase technical cooperation in education, security and exploration and exploitation of oil and gas.

He emphasized that commercial and technical cooperation between the two countries will not only benefit their peoples but should ultimately key into infrastructural, economic and political integration of Africa-an ideal that both President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda and Nana Akufo-Addo, do cherish.

In his response, President Nana Akufo-Addo welcomed Amb. Ocheger to Ghana and assured him of his Government’s commitment to accord him all the necessary support required to facilitate the consolidation cordial bilateral relations

between the two countries.

He underscored the importance of strong ties between Ghana and Uganda and called on the public and private stakeholders to take advantage of the good relations for the mutual benefit of both countries in particular and Africa generally.

President Nana AkufoAddo pointed out that the infrastructural deficit experienced in the two countries; and indeed the African continent has militated against intra Africa trade. To this end, he challenged African countries to invest more in road, rail and air transport in order to facilitate economic cooperation between and amongst African countries and sub regions.

The meeting was attended by officials from the government of Ghana and Uganda High Commission in Abuja.
