July 1st is celebrated in both Canada and Ghana as significant national days. Both countries have one major thing in common: The two were all former colonies of Britain. For Canada, July 1 st is the day commemorated as the nation’s founding day. That was when what was then different parts of Canada, Upper Canada and Lower Canada were put together in a Confederation called Canada. Ghana declared its political independence from Britain on March
6th, 1957. Both countries adopted the British Parliamentary system of government with a Prime Minister as Head of Government and the Queen of Britain as the ceremonial Head of State. This is where the similarities end: On July 1st, 1960, Ghana declared itself a Republic, adopting an Executive Presidential System of government. This effectively ended the role of the British Monarch as Ghana’s Head of State. July 1st is therefore celebrated as Ghana’s Republic Day… cont’d on pg. 48
