July 1st: Ghana-Canada Mutual Day

July 1st is celebrated in both Canada and Ghana as significant national days. Both countries have one major thing in common: The two were all former colonies of Britain. For Canada, July 1 st is the day commemorated as the nation’s founding day.

That was when what was then different parts of Canada, Upper Canada and Lower Canada were put together in a Confederation called Canada. Ghana declared its political independence from Britain on March

6th, 1957. Both countries adopted the British Parliamentary system of government with a Prime Minister as Head of Government and the Queen of Britain as the ceremonial Head of State. This is where the similarities end: On July 1st, 1960, Ghana declared itself a Republic, adopting an Executive Presidential System of government.

Football Administration and Organization in Ghana need radical surgery Over the past three weeks, Ghana has been rocked by the release of a shocking video on a long, painstaking investigation into the operations of the much-loved game of football in Ghana, known in North America as “Soccer”. The investigations that were conducted over a two-year period by an undercover Journalist called Anas Aremeyaw Anas and his Organization known as Tiger Eye PI has rocked the foundations of football administration in Ghana to its core. It depicted a rotten organization that was overseeing the administration of a game whose conduct has lost all credibility.

From top football administrators, Club Managers to Referees, the investigative reports threw a powerful searchlight on the extremely rotten nature of sporting activities in the country. The shocking piece of this expose was the brazen shameless attempts by the top football administrator of Ghana football, Kwesi Nyantekyi, to use the name of the President and Vice President of the country to scam and dupe people to part with money to enrich himself and his corrupt cronies. It detailed how the top football administrators were engaged in serious criminal activities including money laundering.

We have all suspected for a long time that something was not right with the management, organization and administration of sports generally, and football in particular in Ghana. We suspected that the administration and organization of the beautiful game of football was shrouded in some criminal secrecy and scheming. We suspected that the Sports Ministry and its activities have been shrouded around some mafia-like activities.

When people complained, they were dismissed.

When once upon a time a Sports Minister, named Mallam Issa attempted to clean just the tip of the rot at the Sports Ministry, those pot-bellied guys in that Ministry schemed, entrapped him and got him jailed for a crime of stealing forty thousand US Dollars, which later events proved, was just a set-up.

In 2014, a whole government carried a whooping amount of three million US dollars on an aircraft and flew it to Brazil to go and distribute to rampaging and striking football players and their corrupt administrators. Which government manned by people who have their heads properly screwed on would carry this load of cash into another country?

But yes, the Mahama government did, and after the abysmal performance of the national football team at that World Cup series in Brazil in 2014, they set up a meaningless enquiry into what went wrong, as if they did not know. The Report of this so-called enquiry was never implemented. The top government officials who were fingered for wrongdoing by the Committee of Enquiry were promoted and thanked for being thieves.

Going by the latest expose on high-level and deepseated corruption in the administration of sports generally, and football in particular in Ghana by this patriotic son of the nation, popularly known as “Anas”, it will be in the interest of the nation if we took a long break from all major competitions, both local and international, and did a radical examination of the administration and organization of sports in Ghana. The nation has not collapsed since the debacle of 2014 and our non-participation in the on-going World Cup competition in Russia in 2018. The country will be better off if we all sit back, examine in detail what has gone really wrong over the years and come up with very credible ideas on the way forward.

All those pot-bellied administrators around Sporting organizations and agencies in Ghana, especially around football, should be retired to go and spend their stolen booty and allow the nation to reboot. This is not the time for half-baked measures on sports administration and organization. The rot is deep. In that vein, we fully support the Ghana government’s stance in attempting to reorganize football administration in the country starting with the dissolution of the Ghana Football Association.

Ford leads PCs to majority in Ontario’s 42nd general election

The mood for a change in governance in Ontario became a reality on Thursday June 7th, 2018 when voters decided that Doug Ford should be the 26th Premier of Ontario for 4 years.

Premier-elect Doug ford led the progressive Conservatives (PC) to a majority government with 76 seats out of 124 seats in the 42nd Ontario general elections. The NDP led by Andrea Horwath who became the official opposition leader won 40 seats as the outgoing Premier Wynne’s Liberals secured only 7 seats and therefore lost official party status with Green Party’s leader Mike Schreiner securing a historic single seat as they have never been represented at Queen’s Park before.

Before the elections, the Liberals led by outgoing Premier Kathleen Wynne had 58 seats, PC 28 and the NDP 21. The vote percentages of the 42nd election were 40.50% for PC, 33.56% for NDP, Liberals 19.59% and the Green Party 4.60%. The Liberals lost 51 seats and now have no official party status as the cut off number is 8 and they got 7. They lose money for research, staff salaries and other purposes the party caucus determines. They also lose many privileges they had in the past. The

incoming government can decide to tweak the rules to allow them official party status. They can use their discretion to allow the Liberals to enjoy official party status. MPPs that do not have official status are listed as independents by the Legislature.

It is going to be difficult in the rebuilding process as a new interim leader has been selected in the person of MPP John Fraser of Ottawa South after the resignation of Hon Kathleen Wynne.

The PCs have been in opposition since 1999 and the NDP also attempted to win their second when Bob Rae won in 1990. The Liberals on the other hand attempted to win their fifth consecutive general election dating back to 2003 when Dalton McGuinty won his first premiership with 72 cont’d on pg. 12

Akufo-Addo sacks Charlotte Osei, two deputies

Amadu Sulley, Charlotte Osei, Georgina Opoku Amankwaa President AkufoAddo has removed the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei and her two deputies, Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwaa from office.

This comes after a committee set up by the Chief Justice, Justice Sophia Akuffo, pursuant to Article 146(4) of the Constitution, to investigate separate complaints brought against the three persons

by Ghanaian citizens, recommended their removal from office.

The Committee recommended their removal on the basis

of stated misbehavior and incompetence, pursuant to Article 146 (1) of the Constitution.

A statement by a Minister for Information, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid on Thursday said, the President had directed the three persons to hand over their respective schedules to the Director of Human Resources at the Commission, while thanking them for their service to the country.

“The provisions of Article 146 (9) of the Constitution require the President of the Republic to act in accordance with the recommendations of the Committee.

“President Akufo-Addo has directed the three persons to hand over their respective schedules to the Director for Human Resource and General Services of the Electoral Commission, and thanked them for their services to the nation”, the statement said.

President Akufo-Addo dissolves GFA President Akufo-Addo has dissolved the Ghana Football Association after a private investigative c o m p a n y, Ti g e r Eye PI documented rampant bribery and corruption in the game.

Sports Minister Isaac Asiama has confirmed the dissolution and said all its officers can no longer carry themselves as FA officials. ‘It has been dissolved with immediae effect’, he told Evans Mensah on Top Story.

Prime Minister announces that the Government of Canada will officially recognize the International Decade for People of African Descent

Canada wins bid to Co-Host the 2026 World Cup with U.S. and Mexico The current blueprint calls for Canada and Mexico to stage 10 games each with the U.S. hosting 60 FIFA’s member associations voted 134 to 65, with one no-vote, Wednesday in favour of the joint North American bid by Canada, the U.S. and Mexico to host the 2026 World Cup over that of Morocco at the FIFA Congress in Moscow.

Over the past two years, the Government of Canada has taken concrete measures to fight

inequality and improve the lives of all Canadians, including those of African descent. We have helped parents with the high cost of raising kids through the Canada Child Benefit, and expanded the Canada Pension Plan so more people can retire with security and dignity. We have also made significant investments in student grant programs, mental health initiatives, and affordable child care, and introduced a National Housing Strategy that will solve housing security for many vulnerable Canadians.

The Government of Canada will continue to build on these efforts, and create a country where more Canadians have a real and fair chance at success.

Canada failed in its lone previous bid — to host the 1986 tournament after Colombia pulled out as host.

That remains the only World Cup the Canadian men have ever qualified for.

The hosting decision likely opens the door to Canada finally returning to the men’s world stage _ a widely expected scenario as co-host that has yet to be officially confirmed. But with the tournament expanding from 32 to 48 teams in 2026, tripling the hosts would not cause as many ripples.

FOCUS Of Graduates, Graduation Ceremonies and Graduate Unemployment!

This special month of the year also marks ‘Father’s Day’ which is also celebrated worldwide. Let me use this opportunity to congratulate fathers throughout the world.

I also appeal to all graduates to put their past behind them and strive for or hold on to the best in life. For, it is said, “Never let your past experiences harm your future. Your past can’t be altered and your future doesn’t deserve the punishment.”

Now let’s briefly look at June as the month of graduation ceremonies and the unemployment problem facing many university graduates.

This June, I foresee the joy in the eyes of many parents who have had to be present to support their children on such memorable occasion during one’s education journey known as GRADUATION. Graduation is a benchmark of student achievement, and therefore it is NOT wrong to celebrate such

success in grand style at every ‘growth’ on the educational ladder!

Others refer to graduation as ‘the action of receiving or conferring an academic degree or the ceremony that is sometimes associated, where students become Graduates. Before the graduation, candidates are referred to as Graduands.

Some graduation ceremonies could be elaborate and usually include a procession of the academic staff and candidates. Speeches are given at the ceremonies by speakers such as the heads of the institutions, renowned educationists, politicians and most importantly valedictorians chosen from among the graduating classes.

Graduation is a benchmark of student achievement, and therefore it is NOT wrong to celebrate such success in grand style

at every ‘growth’ on the educational ladder!

June every year see most graduation ceremonies in Canada.

In the United States, besides “commencement,” the term “graduation” is also used in schools below university level such as the high school, middle school and even kindergarten and preschool ceremonies.

In Japan, graduation ceremonies are in March followed by entrance ceremonies in April. This coincides with the Japanese school calendar and the Japanese government fiscal year. Graduation is also related to the changing of the seasons and is often reflected in the ceremony decor and related advertising (i.e. new uniforms, backpacks, school supplies...).

In our motherland, Ghana, less or no attention is given to graduation ceremonies until one reaches the tertiary level of education. Whatever understanding you have for graduation, graduation ceremonies officially mark the ‘growth’ that a student attains at different levels

of his/her education journey; and graduates from one level (specially High School) to higher level (such as College or University) should not be complacent of their ‘growth’ and rest on their oars as they journey on! Graduation is a ‘growth’ that comes with responsibility.

Graduation comes by hard work, perseverance and determination.

I personally see graduation ceremonies as befitting ways of honoring such virtues. Obviously, many females in our Ghanaian community in particular and the Black community in Canada as a whole graduate from universities and colleges more than the males. However, Black male students are succeeding despite the negative indicators of schooling. We should therefore do all that is possible to encourage both Black female and male students to stay in school and work hard towards their graduations.

One serious problem that many university/ college graduates especially those in the developing countries like Ghana face is unemployment.

World Bank report on Ghana in 2016 laments the growing youth unemployment

in Ghana. It says 48% of Ghanaian youth are jobless.

The report reveals, “In Ghana, youth are less likely than adults to be working: in 2012, about 52% of people aged 15-24 were employed (compared to about 90% for the 25-64 population), a third were in school, 14% were inactive and 4% were unemployed actively looking for job. Young women in the same age group are particularly disadvantaged and have much higher inactivity rates than men: 17% of young female are inactive as opposed to 11% of males.”

It recommended that “government must work towards equipping the youth with relevant skills through the educational system.”

This calls for the creation of enabling environment by governments to foster more jobs as well as educational institutions providing career pathways for students before they graduate.

A career is ones path through life. This encompasses education, learning, different jobs, family life, friendships, community activities and leisure activities. Its development requires students to understand themselves and opportunities in both the

world and workplace in order to create the right pathways to build successful future. Students from postsecondary institutions in Ghana, for example, are mostly unemployed due to the lack of effective planning for the workplace while at school in a country where job opportunities are dwindling.

It must be noted that the workplace is rapidly changing as existing jobs become more complex and new jobs demand increased levels of education with the desired employable skills. This is why we need to assist students wherever they are to be able to create pathways to success.

Our communities are undergoing radical changes as technology advances. Schools, colleges and universities ought to acknowledge such changes and make what students are taught in these formal institutions of learning more relevant to the needs of the communities.

Once again, I take this opportunity to congratulate all graduates of 2018. May the Good God be your guide as you move on to either further your studies or enter the workforce.

Most of the polling showed Andrea Horwath as the preferred premier of the 3 candidates. On June 2ndoutgoing Premier Wynne astonishingly came out and conceded that she was not going to be the next premier and the

Liberals were not going to for the government. It was a decision according to pundits a first. She is in history books as the first female premier of Ontario and also led her party to the worst defeat of a governing party in the annals of Ontario.

Premier-elect Doug Ford and his government will be sworn in on June 29, 2018.

The ‘allegators’ have spat onto the Eye of the Tiger and the tiger has roared back with vim

So the Anas Exposé #Number12 was premiered successfully and since aired amidst all the hullaballoo.

Yes, you heard me right.

Hullaballoo. Despite all the news of the several threats and attempts by different bigwig personalities seeking injunctions against Anas Aremeyaw Anas with regards to the airing/ premiering of #Number12, nothing could stop it. It premiered, it showed, and it conquered.

For some, Number 12 was always going to be the straw that broke the Camel’s back.

Since its announcement, it has gathered far more attention than “Ghana in the eyes of God”. The show seem to have only just began.

Anas’ vim and vigour is even building up and going higher and higher. I do not know whether to call this whole revolution against Anas and the Tiger Eye PI team a drama, ‘documentary’ or simply concert party.

Let us get into it. For emphasis, I like to start by saying that Anas, Aremeyaw Anas is a household name in Ghana. A journalist, a popular and a revered

one of course. He has not always appealed to the top dawgs but for the masses, he is their hero whether you like it or not. Let’s face it, “there is no point in doing journalism, that doesn’t benefit society”? That is what Anas likes to do and that is what he does best and has been doing for about two decades now. He has done so many projects and we have applauded him for it. The big question now is, why now? Why all of a sudden?

Our Elders say blood is thicker than water, they do not say rich man’s blood is thicker than poor man’s blood. I hope you can feel the flow already. I will return to this in my next article.

For now, let me deal with this issue of the so-called allegations against Anas.

They seem to be mounting and mounting by the day yet without any proper feet to stand on. The question

again is, why now? Uh? Why now? It doesn’t look like these allegations would be going away anytime soon but believe you me and I know this for a fact that these allegations doesn’t even tear Anas’ button to even touch his shirt. He’s resolute and focused than ever before.

Against no go chop. Skin pain no go win. You are feeling the flow now, right?

I must point out that I am no spokesperson for Anas but an observer of the trends and one who comments only when necessity calls.

After all, they say necessity is the mother of invention.

Come with me now to the court of allegations and help me digest and dissect the truck load of allegations against Anas. You don’t need me to go over them one by one. Do you? He’s been called corrupt, blackmailer, extortionist, and the list goes on. I am sure you already have all the adjectives that have been used to describe Anas and their synonyms too.

It is very surprising that even though a lot of people – I say a lot people with emphasis – seem to be claiming that Anas is corrupt, has duped them, takes bribes or that they have incriminating

evidence against Anas, they do not seem to be interested in taking any steps to take Anas to court or report the alleged crimes to the Police.

First Question Mark! Even more surprising is the lack of any evidential capital to back any of these claims. Another question mark! Do you see a pattern here? Of course you do and it gets even better. It gets more worrying when even those who have been indicted by the court of public opinion, lost their jobs and prestige, etc as a result of Anas’ journalistic adventures seem to shy away from the task of taking on the challenge of providing anything of tangible material substance in support of their claims of entrapment, s e d u c t i o n , b r i b e r y, blackmail, encroachment on privacy, blah blah blah.

You would think they would do so to, if anything at all, at least clear their names. I think I have your attention now so I will proceed. I will proceed steadily and with care and caution.

It is a natural and fundamental obligation of any citizen who has a “reasonable suspicion” or any sort of evidence at all that suggests that a crime has been committed, is being committed, or is about to be committed to inform the appropriate law enforcement agencies, The Police in most cases. This is not dependent on whether or not you trust or like the Police. It doesn’t and never should. You know The Police and trust issues is another discussion for another day. Let us stick with this subject matter for now.

Of course, another avenue for anyone who wants to make a lawful challenge against another person’s actions, inactions, character, and any default of any kind against the constitution is the option of going to court, right? I am no legal wizard so permit me to go at a snail’s pace when I use legal jargon or refer issues of some legal magnitude. That is not to say that my fundamental human right of freedom of speech can be infringed upon. My understanding is that in matter like these, you can go to the Police and you can go to court. Especially in matters of suspected crimes, one would expect expediency in the discharge of this fundamental function by the citizenry.

Although we seem to be swamped by a ‘congregation’ of allegations against Anas, it is amazing that that those “allegators” (please note spelling of allegators and

the fact that it in inverted commas and has the “power of attorney” to represent his loyal friend “accusers” in this matter) seem to feel comfortable making these allegations in the media yet they refuse to take the case to Anas. They refuse to go to the Police and refuse to file a court case against Anas.

Is there something we don’t know? Or better still is there something we should know?

Anyone who supports the rule of law and the principle of naming and shaming would expect the accusers of Anas to use the same enthusiasm to take reasonable steps to take Anas to court to settle the matter with the due process of the law. I lie? Remember Kwame A Plus says any “Ghanaian” can go to court so I am sure you see another question mark here even though I am about to use a full stop. By the way, I know Kwame A Plus will cont’d on pg. 14

Africa’s pollution killing thousands of infants, study says KAMPALA, Uganda Modest reductions in air pollution can prevent the deaths of tens of thousands of infants in sub-Saharan Africa each year, according to a new scientific study that investigated the link between breathable air pollutants and premature deaths in 30 countries across the continent.

Although few pollution monitoring systems exist in Africa, the researchers combined satellitebased data estimating the concentration of air pollutant particles with household health survey data on the location and timing of almost 1 million infant births - and any subsequent deaths between 2001 and 2015.

There is a “robust relationship” between breathable particulate matter and infant mortality in some of the world’s poorest countries, according researchers from Stanford University and the University of California, San Diego published Wednesday in the journal Nature.

Particulate matter, one of many air pollutants, is believed by many experts to be the most harmful to human health.

The term refers to small particles suspended in the air, including dust and black carbon originating from such sources as fossil fuel and biomass burning. Air pollution contributes to the global burden of heart disease, lung cancer, as well as respiratory diseases such as asthma and pneumonia, according to the World Health Organization.

Many people in Africa, where the process of rural electrification has been slow, still burn wood to cook or heat their homes. Other sources of pollutants may be natural, including large amounts of dust from the Sahara Desert.

Every 10-microgramper-cubic-meter increase in the concentration of breathable particulate matter is associated with an increase of about 9 per cent in infant mortality, an effect consistent over the 15-year study period, the study’s authors say.

They also estimate that a decrease in air pollution of 5 micrograms per cubic meter across Africa might have averted around 40,000 infant deaths in 2015.

“The principal sources of particulate matter differ across sub-Saharan Africa. As such, policies and approaches to reducing pollution may be most appropriately undertaken at the local and regional scale,” Sam Heft-Neal, one of the study’s authors, told The Associated Press. “In booming urban areas, many of the relevant technologies and policies are the same ones that have been applied in more developed economies: moving away from coal to cleaner feedstocks for electric power production, putting particulate filters on buses and trucks, and reducing traffic congestion.”

Addressing biomass burning both in the farming fields and for cooking may require more comprehensive policies to rapidly move households up the energy ladder, he said, citing solar energy as “an excellent way to remove kerosene emissions” from homes.

The study also found that wealthier households were not immune from the negative effects of air pollution.

Although many African governments recognize the threat to lives from air pollutants, efforts to stem pollution have often lagged behind the more practical concerns

of growing economies and attracting investors to develop local industry.

Some countries are starting to act. In the East African nation of Uganda, where cars emitting black exhaust fumes are a common sight on the roads, a draft law proposes to ban imports of vehicles older than eight years. The bill, already approved by Uganda’s cabinet, aims to curb imports of used Japanese cars that are seen as a major source of pollution in the urban areas.

According to the World Health Organization, 97 per cent of cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants in developing countries don’t meet WHO air quality guidelines. That number decreases to 49 per cent in high-income countries.

A 2015 study published in Nature found that air pollution, mostly by breathable particulate matter, leads to 3.3 million premature deaths a year worldwide, predominantly in Asia.

That study projected that by 2050 the death total would double, to about 6.6 million a year, if trends didn’t change.

“The realities of our society are so difficult,” said Denis Akankunda Bwesigye, a fellow at U g a n d a ’s M a k e r e r e University School of Public Health, citing the widespread use in rural areas of burning wood in the process of cooking.

Air pollution, he said, contributes significantly to the cases of pneumonia, which kills more than 24,000 Ugandan children under the age of 5 each y e a r, a c c o r d i n g t o government figures.

Most countries have one or two official national languages, while a few including the United States and Mexico have none.

Zimbabwe with a population of 16.15 million, however, has 16 – a number that beat all countries in the world.

And it is recognized by the Guinness World Records as the only country in the world to accomplish that feat.

Official languages have special legal status, and are the languages used within government. For multilingual nations particularly, it can be important to designate official languages at national level.

Chewa, Chibarwe, English, Kalanga, Koisan, Nambya, Ndau, Ndebele, Shangani, Shona, sign language, Sotho, Tonga, Tswana, Venda, and Xhosa are all listed in the Zimbabwean constitution as recognized dialects. Nonetheless, Shona, Ndebele and English are mostly

spoken throughout the country.

Over the period, there have been concerns raised by citizens as a result of the neglect of some of the marginal languages.

In 2016, Vice President Nelson Chamisa made a general call to all citizens to appreciate their languages, “Zimbabweans must be proud of their languages and, as such, parliament must ensure there was translation.”

On his part as speaker of parliament Jacob Mudenda said, “we want to put electronic systems that will have automatic translation so that if someone speaks in Venda, the minister can switch on to English and understand the question and when he replies, the person who has asked the question will switch on to Venda to get the reply.”

Currently, initiatives are in process of being formulated – including ensuring that local radio and television stations were inclusive of the country’s official languages.

Back to the issue now. If Anas has duped anyone, what prevents the person from following due process and taking the right steps to bring his/her case against Anas to the attention of law enforcement? Simple question but I am sure it would take years to get the simple answer it deserves.

Please take Anas to court or report him to Police if he has duped you. Simple! Or they don’t have common goat to use as ‘evidence’ in a court case? Common goat.

Aaba! My ear self is about to break. If you turn left, this person says Anas has done this this. Turn right and there is another “Allegator” saying Anas has done this and that. Everywhere in Ghana and anywhere you see a group of Ghanaians, they are ‘talking about’ Anas. He is also someone’s son ooo. You praise Anas as the revered investigative journalist and he investigated you undercover and found what you do not want the world to see then you call him a crooked and controversial journalist? Anas, come for your stone.

The long and short of my long talk is that there are a lot of allegations against Anas yet they remain mere allegations. They have so far turned out to be allegations, I must stress.

Let me ask you a quick question, if I may.

If you hear a lot of unsubstantiated claims and allegations in the media against you (your person) which seem to be bothering on sabotage, libel, slander and defamation etc etc without any concrete evidence, what would you do? You would go to court, right? You would seek remedy, right?

You would fight for a rejoinder, right?

Exactly! That is what Anas is doing. That is the very reason why he has sued. Anas has sued. Period! He’s ready with his team of lawyers to go to court and boy are we going to have a showdown of a lifetime. Some people say Ghana will turn upside down but I beg to differ. Ghana will be hot and sweet like hot banku with ground Kpakpo shito and fried fish. It will be sweet papa.

By the way, did I forget to say, Anas is also a qualified lawyer? Please, pardon my haste. Let me say it before I forget. Anas is a lawyer oo so court will jam rough.

Of course, Anas will not speak in court.

He doesn’t need to, does he? And why does seeing his face matter to you at all?

He has sued by lawful attorney so he doesn’t even need to be in the court room.

The legal professors will keep me right on this. He doesn’t even need to be in the court room, right? In any case, I strongly urge you to hold tight to your seats, Anas might be the one sitting right next to you in court. Oh yes, I am 99.9% sure that he will be in court but you will not see him.

No gimmicks, no hidden cameras. He will be watching from start to finish with eagle eyes. You can be sure of the spectacle and the media attention. Ebaafee gbeyei k?k?.

I “arrest” my case for now. How I wish Lawyer Nti would be representing Anas in court.

I am not a judge, besides I do not chop goat meat so no one should come and see me in ‘chambers’. I repeat, no one should attempt to come and see me in chambers.

Trump Kim summit: US and North Korean leaders hold historic talks Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un have become the first sitting US president and North Korean leader to meet, an unprecedented development after a year of exchanging threats.

The pair shook hands at a luxury hotel on Singapore’s Sentosa island before proceeding to talks.

After the summit the leaders signed a “comprehensive” document, promising a new relationship between the nations.

They had been discussing defusing tensions and nuclear disarmament.

The document commits North Korea to work towards “the complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula” and promises “new relations” between Washington and Pyongyang.

The US had demanded “complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation”.

Analysis: Laura Bicker, BBC News, Singapore The agreement the two sides have signed is vague and lacking in detail. It only commits the US and North Korea to the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

There is no mention that the process should be verifiable or irreversible which is what the US has been pushing for. There is no timetable to disarm North Korea nor is there any invitation for weapons inspectors to be allowed in.

The US has said it will provide security guarantees without specifying what that might mean - or if that could involve the removal of some American troops based in South Korea. The two sides have promised to hold follow up talks and work on efforts to build a lasting peace regime.

This could eventually result in a treaty to end the near 70-year war. It is at least a start. Something to build on.

There was also a commitment to build “a stable and lasting peace” on the Korean peninsula.

How the historic moment unfolded “I think both sides will be very impressed with the result,” Mr. Trump said at a signing ceremony with Mr. Kim. The US president said more details would be provided at a press conference due shortly. said his meeting with Mr. Kim went “better than anybody could have expected” The pair signed a document pledging they would work towards new relations Mr. Trump spoke of a “special bond” with the North Korean leader and said he was “absolutely” willing to invite him to the White House.

“We’ve decided to leave the past behind,” Mr. Kim said. “The world will see major changes.”

Still, analysts remain divided on what the summit will ultimately achieve.

Some see it as a propaganda win for Mr. Kim, others a potential path to peace.

Details are thin - but it’s a start

The summit began with a striking image, unimaginable just months ago.

The two men, accompanied only by interpreters, spoke for a little under 40 minutes. They were then joined by small delegations of advisors for a working lunch.

From Washington the group included US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and security adviser John Bolton, and on Pyongyang’s side, Mr. Kim’s “righthand man” and former spy chief Kim Yong-chol, and foreign minister Ri Yong-ho.

The two men walked towards each other and firmly gripped each other’s hands in front of US and North Korean flags.

A Glance at the Basic Requirements for Successful In-Canada Spousal Sponsorship Applications Before submitting an In-Canada spousal or common-law sponsorship application, one has to consider the basic eligibility criteria for the sponsor and the sponsored relative and other basic requirements of the Immigration.

Immigration Regulation 124(b) states that a person must have a valid temporary resident status in order to be sponsored from inside Canada in the spouse or common-law category.

However, for policy reasons, Immigration is almost always willing to overlook the fact that a person is out of status notwithstanding the fact that R124 (b) says the opposite.

The Manual considers as acceptable a situation where persons have overstayed a visa, visitor record, work permit or student permit. Persons who have worked or studied without being authorized to do so under the Act could also be permitted to apply for permanent residence from within the country under spousal or common-law category.

Certain criminal acts of the sponsor could also render the sponsor ineligible to sponsor. Additionally, the sponsor is required to demonstrate that he or she can support the person(s) being sponsored. This

The new venues mark a new chapter for JAMBANA One World Festival and its coordinators.

“Brampton is the ‘home’ for JAMBANA,” says Denise Jones, Executive Producer of JAMBANA One World Festival and President of Jones & Jones Productions Ltd. “It’s where the conception of the ideas for the project come from, it’s the home of NFP Kuumba Cultural Association, and it’s the home of Jones & Jones Productions Ltd. – producers of the festival.

“The move to the Rose Theatre and the CAA Centre (formerly Powerade Centre) has allowed us to provide seated venues, as well as concepts that are better suited indoors, and some ‘rain or shine’ assurance for our programming,” continues Jones. “In all, there are more than 13 hours of tropical summer family fun, with the ambiance of ‘let’s get together and feel alright.”

Ghana has 15k sickle cell babies born every year The founder of Sickle Life Dr Enam Bankas said that over one thousand children are born with the ailment on monthly basis despite the public education.

The founder of Sickle Life Dr. Enam Bankas has revealed that over 15, 000 babies are born with sickle cell disease yearly in Ghana.

In an interview with Accra-based Starr FM, Dr Bankas said that over one thousand children are born with the ailment on monthly basis despite the public education.

Dr. Bankas said the number of babies born with

sickle cell disease in Ghana yearly is worrying.

“The truth is that on yearly basis we have about 15,000 babies born with the disease and it’s worrying that all these young ones are going to grow up and go through all that difficulty. Sickle Cell patients have a particular mutation in the Red Blood Cell. Instead of their red blood cells hav-

ing the shape of a ‘doughnut’, they tend to be like that of a ‘sickle’. People associate sickle cell disease to pain around parts of the body.”

She said giving birth to children with sickle cell can be avoided if wouldbe couples know their status before tying the knot.

She advised: “Sickle Cell disease can be avoided.

You need to get tested to know your sickling

status. When you know your sickling status, make sure you know the status of whoever you end up marrying as well. I don’t understand why people stigmatize people who have sickle cell. People assume that if you have sickle cell disease, it means the patients or their parents have offended a

god or something. It is a myth.”

Dr Bankas who is living with sickle cell said the perception that people living with the disease are bound for death is inaccurate.

Dr. Bankas called on Ghanaians get checked and know their status in the various hospitals because testing is free of

charge Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of blood disorders typically inherited from a person’s parents.

The most common type is known as sickle cell anaemia (SCA). It results in an abnormality in the oxygen-carrying protein haemoglobin found in red blood cells.

Ghana bans tilapia fish imports Ghana will ban the importation of all tilapia fish to prevent the outbreak of a virus which posed a huge risk to the global tilapia industry, the Ministry of Fisheries has said.

The Tilapia Lake Virus (TilV) had no cure, and had been found in tilapia

farms across Africa, Asia and South America, it added.

The ministry said the sixmonth ban - which comes into effect on Sunday would affect both live and dead tilapia fish.

Ghana’s fish stock has been depleting because of illegal over-fishing.

There are a few tilapia farms in Ghana, but the farming is done on a small scale.

Ghana’s capital city has a shortage of hospital beds and this is already having deadly consequences Patients are at ‘real threat’ of contracting deadly infections because hospitals are too overcrowded, a thinktank has warned.

Hospitals in Ghana are struggling to cope as the number of inpatient beds continues to be slashed across the health service Local media in the country report that the health service is facing increasing pressure as the urban population keeps increasing.

There are 3,400 hospital beds in Accra, serving health needs of the over 5 million population.

These beds are found in 7 major hospitals located in the capital.

K o r l e - B u Te a c h i n g Hospital has 2,000 beds, Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge) has 420 beds, Trust Hospital has 86 beds.

These hospitals have the equipment and specialists for highly specialised medical care.

Questions about the number of beds in major hospitals in the country has come to the fore following that the

‘avoidable’ death of a 70-year-old man who spent almost 2 hours in a car driven by his family in an attempt to find a hospital to attend to his health emergency.

All the hospitals they visited refused to attend to him because no beds were available.

He died in the car at LEKMA Hospital after they visited other major hospitals including the K o r l e - B u Te a c h i n g Hospital and Police Hospital.

Anthony Bourdain opened up about his ‘unhappy soul’ in an interview a year before he died Celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain was found dead in his hotel room on Friday.

The cause of death is believed to be suicide.

Has a history of drug addiction.

Last year, he told The Guardian he had been an “unhappy soul.”

“I hurt, disappointed and offended many, many, many people and I regret a lot. It’s a shame I have to live with,” he said.

Anthony Bourdain, the celebrity chef who was found dead on Friday at the age of 61, opened up about his regrets, shame, and what he called his “unhappy soul” in an interview with The Guardian a year before he died.

Bourdain, who was found in his hotel room in France on Friday morning, is believed to have killed himself.

He was the host of CNN’s “Parts Unknown,” had written a best-seller about his time as a chef, and received countless awards and nominations for his work throughout the late 2000s and 2010s.

Kate Spade, fashion designer, found dead in apparent suicide

You are enough. We are enough. Being enough

By Sara Obeng, Toronto As people, and especially as women, we have all had our fair share of times and moments of inadequacies; times when and where we have consciously or unconsciously felt not-enough, inadequate, or simply not matching up to ‘that standard’.

I believe strongly that we must in the same vein or a better vein for that matter come to the time and moment where we think, say, and live our lives as ‘I am enough’. I am particularly on us as women because I truly agree with the adage that: “If you educate a man you educate an individual, but if you educate a woman you educate a family (nation)” Dr. James Emmanuel Kwegyir-Aggrey (1875-1927).

This is due to the fact that I have come to realize that everyone comes from a home, and as women (especially mothers) we are the pivot of the home, and generally, literally everything revolves around women. Thus, when we come to this realization, this point in life, and embrace this fact of life, we will be able to educate the rest of the home about this, and for thus, the world will in ripple effect learn to embrace this beautiful aspect of life.

Some have called it a fastpaced world; a ‘need to fit in’ society, must be accepted by all; need to get likes or be liked’, need to be followed by the numbers on all platforms, just to name a few. Who gets to define the terms of our lives and gave them the audacity to do so? We hate being judged

daily basis and that is when we know we are living and not just existing. If we’re simply going through life and not growing through our experiences in life, we need to have an overhaul of our entire life and begin to accept the fact that we are enough at every point in time.

Anxiety, freight, stress, and above all fear, easily overtakes us when eyes are on us. We hanker acceptance or approval be comfortable and are willing to literally do anything for it.

Why are all these – because we find ourselves not-enough, and feel the need to have these to be enough. In effect, we have let society label as not-enough for whatever reasons. This wanes our joy and steals our happiness from enjoying the moments of our lives (which we’ll never have again, by the way). This is the way I personally look at it. No one gets to choose their circumstance into which we are born. We are born into such unequal circumstances, and we have to accept the fact that whatever our circumstance, at any moment, we are enough!

It is not to say that we should not strive for better living conditions of those things we can improve upon – that would be unwise. As a matter of fact, we should be getter better on

Maybe we are at a point in our life where things look gloomy and blurry; have pursued a career and have still not found our bearing; much like struggling, climbing hurdles, searching for something that we couldn’t even see—and just reaching for it. We are figuring things out in life and we feel not qualified for it – we don’t deserve it. We are tempted to continually assume that we are not enough because of what we have or are, or because of what we don’t have or what we aren’t. Is it society or ourselves who get to define us as smart or not smart enough; pretty or not pretty enough; ethnic or not ethnic enough; thin or not thin enough. Is it society that gets to define that then, obviously, even if the definition goes in our favor for a time, it will be out of our favor another time, because society is not stable, society is made of imperfect people, judgmental personalities, as well as people who are dealing with their own issues anyway!

On the other hand, when we make the definition based on positive mindset it will definitely be in our favor and that is empowering! Hey, we are enough, every moment of our lives.

It begins in the mind; a paradigm shift of the mind to the point of believing that we are enough, regardless. With this honest beginning will come courageous and bold actions and steps on our part, and the heavens will line up the opportunities to get things manifesting for us. Until then, we will continue to belittle ourselves, mask up and cover up to fit in, to be accepted even by those we don’t like anyway, to survive in areas we can quite easily thrive. Enough of the makeup, enough of the pretense, enough of surviving to fit in by all means. We are enough just as we are! You need to know that you are enough!

Maybe no one has ever seen you, but the Maker has seen you

and you need to see yourself and know that you are enough!

Let this be a wakeup call for us all.

Quit the self-doubt. Quit the selfpity. Quit the pity-party. Quit the insecurity. Take the mask off! Less pretense and makeup and more YOU! Contentment or discontentment. Choose contentment.

Whatever project we may be working on, hope for the best with a positive mindset, great attitude; don’t go through it but grow through it. On that journey of striving to get to see your dreams come alive, we will learn who we are and truly ascertain that we are enough.

However, he also said he was “in much better shape than I’ve probably ever been,” adding: “I travel 250 days a year. I’m lean, my alcohol bloat has gone and I do Brazilian jiu-jitsu every day.”

He said he had “learnt to take food less seriously and try whenever possible to experience it emotionally rather than as a professional or critic.”

“When you’ve seen what I’ve seen on a regular basis it changes your world view,” he said.

Bourdain had been in France working on new episodes

“Parts Unknown,” in which he travels the world and reports on local cuisine and culture, when he was found on Friday.

“I’ve spent such a lot of time in the developing world, I was caught in a war in Beirut, been in Liberia, the Congo, Iraq and Libya and realised how fast things can get bad, how arbitrary good fortune and cruelty and death,” he said in the interview. “I suppose I’ve learnt humility. Or something.”

On being close to death at points in his career, he added: “The great Warren Zevon was asked, close to death, whether he had any important words of wisdom to pass on and he said, ‘Enjoy every sandwich.’ I definitely enjoy my sandwiches, given how low I fell and how likely it was that there was going to be a different and tragic outcome.

“I’m a pretty lucky man. I enjoy

my food and presenting ‘Parts Unknown.’ I have the best job in the world.”

Bourdain leaves behind a daughter and a girlfriend, Italian actress Asia Argento. Argento had accused Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault and become a vocal critic of his.

Janet Brakohiapa

a Cancer Survivor who is making an impact in our Community By: Emmanuel Ayiku, Toronto

Born in Germany and raised in Ghana, Janet Brakohiapa is a mother of two lovely boys and a lawyer who has been called to the Bar both in Ghana, West Africa and in Ontario, Canada. She was called to the Bar in Ghana in 1996 and immigrated to Canada in 1998. She attended Queen’s University in Kingston Ontario for the 2000-2001 academic years where she successfully completed her accreditation requirements to qualify her to write the Ontario Bar examinations. She successfully completed the Bar admission course and was called to the Ontario Bar in September 2003.

After her call to the Ontario Bar, she engaged in private practice of law for a few months. She practiced in the areas of family law, immigration and criminal law until she gained employment in the Legal Clinic system in 2004. Legal Clinics are funded by Legal Aid Ontario to provide legal services to low income people in Ontario. She has worked diligently in the legal clinic system since 2004 to represent and advocate for people who are disadvantaged economically, socially and financially.

She is proud to be part of the legal clinic community which provides pro bono legal services and representationto people who would otherwise have no access to justice. Clinic lawyers also empower their clients by providing them legal information and education about issues involving them. As well, they are involved in activism and advocacy of systemic issues in our society and have fought to bring about changes to laws and policies which are damaging and have a negative impact on Ontarians and Canadians in general.

Janet is a born again Christian and a member of the praise and worship team at Impact Lives Church in Toronto. She is also a proud member of the Ghanaian Canadian Community and the Ghanaian Association of Durham.

A few years ago, tragedy struck in Janet’s life with the loss of her husband to cancer. In spite of this tragedy compounded by the need to care for their children, she persevered and remained focused and dedicated to her family. ​ However, within two years, she was also diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. But with aggressive treatment and the support of her family, friends, former classmates from her high school and church members with their prayers and love, today, she is cancer free. Realizing that it is because of early detection that she is still alive.

Janet’s story is endearing and an inspiration to all women who face numerous challenges in their daily lives. Exhibition on Ananse the Spider opens at Ontario Royal Museum with narration by Mr. Eyiah

By Staff Reporter, Toronto-Canada An exhibition has opened at one of the largest museums in the world, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), Toronto-Canada on the one of the world’s most misunderstood creatures-the Spider known in Ghana as Ananse.

The exhibition titled: Spiders-Fear and Fascination runs from June 16, 2018 to January 6, 2019 at ROM before it is moved to other museums in other parts of the world.

There are cultural videos narrations running along side of the Spiders Exhibition in Toronto. Among such narrations is the one based on the Ananse of Ghana by Joe Kingsley Eyiah, a professional teacher and an assistant editor of the Ghanaian News based in Toronto. In his narration, Mr. Eyiah captures the wisdom of the phenomenal Kwaku Ananse as portrayed in many Ananse stories of Ghana and relates its to the support of Ananse’s wife (Aso) and his son (Ntikuma). The moral lessons encapsulated in these Ananse stories are numerous and fantastic.

The celebration of the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) 150th anniversary showcase took place on Friday June 22nd, 2018 at the Toronto City Hall Member’s Lounge.

Each year, the Commonwealth adopts a theme and the 2018 theme was “Towards a Common Future.”

The society was formed in 1868 providing the perfect opportunity or awareness-

raising, branding, building relationships and exploring opportunities across the 53 countries of the commonwealth.

The ball was set rolling with the chair of the Toronto branch of the Royal Commonwealth society, Dr. Rosemary Sadlier welcoming members, dignitaries and guests to the event. She gave a brief history and accomplishments of the society since its

formation to the present.

She remarked that since its founding, the RCS has addressed issues of gender discrimination, domestic violence and child marriage.

She added that the RCS is a network of individuals and organizations committed to improving the lives and prospects of Commonwealth citizens across the world. Also the Royal Commonwealth Society champions human rights, equality,

by Ghanaians in December 2016, members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), now the Opposition Party, and since being confined to that dustbin of history in January, 2017, have been predicting the collapse of our dear country at the least opportunity. From their so-called grassroot members, so-called communicators (many of whom are serial callers to radio stations) to senior members of the Party as well as their members in Parliament, they have been predicting the demise of the nation called Ghana at the least opportunity and at the least “provocation”.

What makes the behavior of the NDC strange and mostly annoying is the fact that the current government is doing, and has done, much much better in the past sixteen months since taking power than the eight years that the NDC spent in office.

The signs are all there to see.

The much dreaded permanent and devastating power outage unpopularly known as “dumsor”, that bedeviled that nation for more than six years, has disappeared since Nana Akufo Addo’s government took over in January 2017. Businesses that relied on stable power supply are functioning again. Many

Sensing these portents and danger signals, the strategy of the NDC now is to scream danger and doomsday at every move of the government even if the move is in the supreme interest of the nation. Readers may recall how the NDC screamed and screamed that the Akufo Addo government had signed an agreement to allow the United States to establish military bases in Ghana and how this move was going to completely mortgage the nation’s sovereignty to the Americans. In their attempts to frighten the hell out of uninformed Ghanaians, they bandied all kinds of wild stories around this agreement, one of them being that the Americans already have constructed a tunnel from the American Embassy at Cantonments in Accra to the Kotoka International Airport to funnel their troops. Hei, the Americans were now poised to take over Ghana in twenty-four hours if they decided to. On and on their stories went.

It turned out that what the Akufo Addo’s government was doing was rather to make public, and even seek Parliamentary approval, for a renewal of the very same agreements the NDC had being signing with the Americans, in secret, for four times since 1998, including one sinister one under which they accepted to bring and settle in Ghana two hardened terrorists from the infamous American detention center at Guantanamo Bay off the Cuban coast. When their hypocrisy was exposed, the NDC then shut up over this agreement with the Americans.

Their next target has been the National Identification exercise to register and issue credible Identification Cards to all bona

fide Ghanaians. Hell has again broken loose in the NDC camp and they are predicting the demise of the nation called Ghana if the government does not allow their Togolese and Burkinabe cousins to come register with the dishonest and stolen Voter ID cards that the NDC shamelessly, with no regard for the security of the nation and the integrity of our electoral system, issued to those non-Ghanaians to enable them vote for the NDC in elections.

They have thus vowed to boycott the national Identification Registration exercise, and are urging their supporters to do same.

Going by the record and hypocrisy and unpredictable nature of the stance of the NDC, I will swear by the cocoyam apostolic priest of my holy village that the leaders of the NDC who are now screaming against the Ghana Card from rooftops, will quietly register for the cards leaving their unsuspecting followers behind and left to their own fate. They did the same thing when they were criticizing the Free SHS. They quietly went and registered their children to enjoy the scheme.

Readers may also recall that when crisis broke out at the Electoral Body of Ghana, the Electoral Commission about high-level corruption, shady deals and incompetence that were leveled against the top three officials at the Electoral Commission, the Chair person, Mrs. Charlotte Osei and her two Deputies, Amadu Sulley and Madam Opoku Amankwaa, the Akufo Addo government, decided to follow the tenets of the rule of law. It responded to the crisis and took actions as the law and Constitution of Ghana require and demand.

The government referred the matter to the Chief Justice to conduct proper investigations into the allegations. Hei. Presto!

The NDC once again sprang into the actions they know best: predict doomsday for the nation called Ghana if the government “dares to touch” the Electoral

Why were the NDC folks so hysterical and scared about the potential removal of Madam Charlotte Osei, the Electoral Commissioner and the two top corrupt officials? Because they knew that she was there to serve their interests. And like the dwindling credibility of the Voter’s ID Card, the NDC sees another electoral plan slipping away not through violence, but on the rails and highway of the rule of law.

Their threats of doomsday and mayhem over the non-acceptance of the Voter’s ID Card for the new Ghana Card became so vociferous that President Akufo Addo was compelled to speak publicly against their behavior describing them as “storm manufacturers”, creating storms where there is no wind. What an apt description?

I strongly believe that it is time for the NDC to stop these constant screaming of “hyena is coming for the sheep”; stop “manufacturing storms” where there are no clouds; stop predicting the destruction and collapse of our dear nation when there is absolutely no reason and cause to do so. The Ghana Train with Akufo Addo at the controls is moving very smoothly and steadily. I call on the NDC to offer constructive criticisms and suggestions for nation-building and stop these constant cries and predictions of doomsday for our nation.

All the allegations of corruption, shady behavior and incompetence of Electoral Commissioner and her two corrupt top Deputies have been proved and they have been sacked by the government in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana. We are waiting to see if the country will collapse with the removal of three very corrupt officials. Come on, “storm manufacturers”. We are waiting!!

Zoning amendments to permit laneway suites approved by Council Bylaw amendments that will permit the construction of laneway suites in residential neighbourhoods in Toronto and East York have been approved by city council..

The amendments to the city’s official plan and zoning bylaw were enacted with a 30-5 vote on Thursday morning.

The vote was the culmination of

years of advocacy by Deputy Mayor Ana Bailão and several other city councillors, who contended that laneway suites would help address a shortage in rental units while

making home ownership more affordable due to their income-generating potential.

“Laneway suites are a part of complete communities.

They can provide more

opportunities for people to live in ground floor housing, for residents to live close to where they work, shop, and play and, can help make the city’s urban lanes more green, liveable, and safe,” a staff

report detailing the bylaw amendments states.

“Laneway suites can contribute to increasing the supply of rental housing and providing additional housing options for households at different ages and life stages.”

Laneway suites must meet numerous conditions Now that the amendments have been approved by council, property owners will be able to apply for permits for the construction of new laneway suites provided that they adhere to a number of conditions.

by Toronto Fire Services emergency vehicles.

That rule, in theory, will prevent laneway suites from being built on some properties that are located on dead-end laneways.

“My permit to travel from Tel Aviv-Israel to Canada was issued after I walked in the footsteps of Jesus and prayed at the Western Wall in Jerusalem” says Jersey.

“I lost custody of my daughter for several years. But I won full custody of her after I walked in the footsteps of Jesus and prayed at the Western Wall in Jerusalem.” Felicia shared her testimony with me.

Paulina, very excited shared her testimony with me of how she got a new job full of good benefits, good people to work with, flexible schedules, good working conditions and many more after she walked in the footsteps of Jesus and prayed at the Western Wall in Jerusalem.

Tears of joy streamed down the face of Ernestina as she also shared her testimony of how she got a wonderful baby after she walked in the footsteps of Jesus and prayed at the Western Wall in Jerusalem.

“I needed a baby so I wrote my prayer request and inserted it in the cracks of the Western Wall. I had a baby within a year after I prayed and posted my request to God which was a great miracle ever to have happened in

my life” Ernestina was full of praise to God. These and many other testimonies shared by Jerusalem Pilgrims who will like to use their first names are to encourage those who want to experience miracles of breakthrough and smile afterwards.

Some members of the clergy have argued that going on pilgrimage to the Holy Land Israel and Bethlehem is unbiblical.

However those who are against pilgrimage to Israel have never been to the Holy City Jerusalem so how can they establish that visiting the Holy Place is unbiblical?

Anyway, without swelling the argument let me share my own testimony which I believe will let you make an inform decision of going to pray at the Holiest Arena in the world, “the Western Wall” in Jerusalem which to me is biblical.

Seven years ago I went on pilgrimage to Israel the Holy land and Bethlehem which is under the Palestinian Authority.

Part of the pilgrimage was a sacred exercise where I wrote my prayer request and inserted it into the cracks of the Western Wall, the Holiest Place in Jerusalem and God granted those requests.

So elated after setting foot at the Holiest place on earth Mount Zion, I scribble my prayer request where I prayed to God and inserted it into the cracks of the wall.

Why going to Jerusalem to pray? Remember, nothing King David did without first of all asking God for it so I followed this biblical principle.

Several miracles followed

after my prayer walk in the footsteps of Jesus and at the Western Wall.

Thank God for those miracles to my prayers, I went on another pilgrimage on September 2017 and more miracles are following that feat.

Five months after my second pilgrimage, the status of my auntie in America has changed for the better. A family feud which scuttled one side of my family for decades has been resolved and the family is now united. I now have a peaceful and wonderful job with very good people working with as I prayed for in Jerusalem.

6. Use caution when serving food Harmful bacteria can grow rapidly when prepared food sits without proper heating or cooling — especially during buffets or outdoor parties. Here are tips for

serving foods safely: - Throw out any leftovers that have been at room temperature for more than two hours or in hot weather for more than an hour.

- If cold food needs to sit out for longer than two hours, use a tray of ice (ice bath) under the food to keep it cold.

Replace the ice as it melts.

When using an ice bath, try to keep the cold food in a shallow container, as this makes it easier to keep all of the food — including the center — properly chilled.

If hot food must sit out for longer than two hours, use warming trays, slow cookers or chafing dishes to keep the food hot.

Canopy Walks are another way to see the province from high in the sky. They provide pedestrian access to the forest canopy, often on boardwalks. Ontario has one that is half a kilometer long - the longest of its kind in the world - 10-20m above the forest floor (Haliburton). You can even have a snack on a platform suspended from the treetops above during your walk!

Put your pedal to the metal. Car Racing is an excellent way to add some excitement to your day. You can race go-karts at one of Ontario’s many go kart tracks at speeds up to almost 50KPH. Agri-Cattle Lakeside Estate wins land case against La Mantse The Court of Appeal has declared AgriCattle Lakeside Estate Ltd the legal owner of the land measuring 2911.53 acres and situate at Katamanso in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.

The plaintiffs further, as part of their reliefs, asked the High Court to make an order directed at the Land Title Registry to cancel the transaction between Nungua and AgriCattle Lakeside Estate Limited.

In a unanimous decision, the court presided over by Justice I. O. Tanko Amadu, held that the property covered by Land Title Certificate No.0513 formed part of Nungua Stool Lands.

The plaintiffs sued the defendants at the High Court, Accra seeking, among other reliefs, a declaration of title in favour of the plaintiffs of all that piece or parcel of land covering an area 49,420 acres which included the land belonging to Lakeside Estate.

The appeal was to contest a judgement of the High Court (Human Rights Division) Accra dated July 7, 2016.

The court awarded a cost of GH¢25,000 against the plaintiffs, Nii Dr Tetteh Kpobi Tsuru III of La Stool (La Mantse), SFA Limited and Fodas Estate Limited.

Defendants’ land The plaintiffs sued Agri-Cattle Lakeside Estate and others at the High Court and wanted a declaration for the land covering about 49,420 acres, including the defendants’ land.

Expunged transaction The plaintiffs further, as part of their reliefs, asked the High Court to make an order directed at the Land Title Registry to expunge the transaction between the Nungua Stool and Agri-Cattle Lakeside Estate Ltd. La Mantse, the first plaintiff, claimed that his stool was the allodial owner of a large tract of land stretching from its present location at La on the South sharing boundary with the Gulf of Guinea and Teshie Land on the South East, Gbatsuna Land, Adjiringano land, Otano, Auman land up to what was

The second and third plaintiffs, SFA Ltd and Fodas Estates Ltd, were grantees of Nii Dr

Tetteh Kpobi Tsuru III. The defendants contested the plaintiffs’ claims and in their statements of defence, disagreed with the position of the plaintiffs and argued that Nii Dr Tetteh Kpobi Tsuru III and others were stopped by limitation, laches and acquiescence.

Access granted Agri-Cattle Lakeside Estate Ltd counterclaimed against the plaintiffs for declaration of title to the 2911.53 acres of land covered by Land Title Certificate No. TD 0513 and situated at Katamanso in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.

At the end of the trial at the High Court, the court found it was not true that the subjects of La were in possession of the disputed land and that they granted access to Agri-Cattle Lakeside Estate to occupy same.

The High Court also found from the evidence that it was Nungua Stool which leased the disputed land to Black Watch Cattle Breeding Farms and its successors, being Agri-Cattle Lakeside Estate.

Based on these and other findings by the court, the High Court stated in its judgement dated July 7, 2016 that the first plaintiff, Nii Dr Tetteh Kpobi Tsuru III, had woefully failed to prove his case against any of the defendants.

Counterclaim In passing judgement, the High Court observed that subjects of La were not the owners of the land in dispute.

Again, the court noted that Lakeside Estate had succeeded in making a case against the plaintiffs but ruled that about one-quarter of Fodas Estate land fell within the property of Lakeside Estate.

It was this concluding part of the High Court judgement which sought to give part of the Agri-Cattle Lakeside Estate land to Fodas Estates Ltd that Agri-Cattle Lakeside Estate and Nungua Stool appealed against.

Subject of dispute The Lakeside Estate appealed the judgement at the Court of Appeal, which said it was wrong for the trial judge to carve out a portion of the land on the basis that that portion was a subject of dispute.

Finally, the Court of Appeal, in its 110-page unanimous judgement upheld the appeals of Agri-Cattle Lakeside Estate Ltd and Nungua Stool.

How to prepare Meat Pie Ingredients: 2 peppers (Poblano) well seeded and chopped.Desired number of frozen unbaked Rhodes rolls.

Eggs for the egg wash.

1 tablespoon of vegetable oil.

1 onion 1.5 kg of finely minced beef(depends though on the quantity of pies preferred) 4-5 tablespoons of ground tomatoes (paste) ½ cup of fresh parsley 1 cup of grated cheese 1 tablespoon of ground cumin and chili powder.

All-purpose flour, well knead (you can mix with eggs if you want) for rolling.

Method For the crust, keep the kneaded rolls under a baking sheet and let it thaw for 4 hours.

To fill, add the oil to a skillet and medium heat it. Cook the pepper and onion to soften then add garlic (again, if preferred) to the mixture and cook for about another minute.

Remove and let it cool aside in another bowl.

Put the previously used large skillet and cook the beef over medium heat to break any large lumps Add the chili powder and cumin to the beef. 3/4 teaspoon of salt is added too and cook till the meat turns brown.

Add ¼ cup of water to the meat and the tomato paste. Stir and cook to obtain a well-combined mixture.

Let the meat cool aside and add the parsley. Add it to the previously cooked vegetables.

Pre-heat the meat in an oven to about 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30 minutes.

Roll each of the above dinner rolls to you desired size and shape on a lightly floured surface (the thinner about ¼ an inch the better. For shape, circular is the best).

Put 2 tablespoons of the meat mixture at the center of each roll.

Apply egg wash at the edges of each roll and fold to obtain your desired shape of the meat pie (friendly advise; be creative with the shape) Fold and press the edges and add another touch of egg wash on top of the fold.

Bake the rolls for up to 12 minutes till they turn golden brown.

How to prepare OKRO SOUP INGREDIENTS •

2 cups grated/finely chopped okro

2 medium bundles of ademe

•

3 large gloves of garlic

•

Piece of ginger root ( about 2cm in length)

1 cup kpakposhito

•

2 large onions

•

1 tsp. of bicarbonate soda

•

I large smoked tuna fish

•

5 large blue crabs (cooked)

•

I cup cooked wele

•

1 stocked cube

•

½ cup palm oil* optional

•

Fish stock * optional

Method •

Separate the ademe leaves from the stem. Wash the leaves carefully to remove all sand. Either cut them up into bite sizes if you are sensitive to size.

•

That a medium size pot and fill it with 2/3 of water. Pour your okro and ademe inside. Add your bicarbonate soda (I opt for bicarbonate because it helps maintain the bright green colour of the okro). Cook for 5-8mins or until it boils over. Do not overcook this okro and cover the pot. Remove from fire and set aside.

Take another saucepan, pour your oil inside and place on medium heat. If you are not using oil, pour your fish stock rather. Slice half of an onion, add it to the pot when hot.

•

Blend together ginger, garlic, the remaining onion and 2/3 of kpakposhito. Pour into the saucepan. Cover and cook for 5mins.

Wash and chop your tomato add to the pot and cook for 2mins.

•

Add your tuna, wele and crabs to the pot. Allow to simmer for 10mins.

•

Gently pour your cooked okro into the sauce. Gently fold the okro into the sauce, and allow to simmer for 8-10mins. Add salt and seasoning for taste. Also drop in some kpakposhito for an extra kick. Do not cover the pot. Remove from fire and serve warm.

Jenas Nyarko, 31 year old Ghanaian killed in Toronto cont’d from pg. 1 to Police. Jenas Nyarko sitting at the back of the car was struck. She was rushed to a trauma centre with a police escort in life- threatening condition by paramedics but died shortly after.

Jenas Nyarko was returning home after a funeral at the Church of Pentecost, 2256 Sheppard Avenue Toronto.

According to police there is nothing to indicate that she or any of the passengers in the car were targeted.Her sadden death sent shock waves across the Ghanaian-Canadian communities across Canada and Toronto in general.

Community members who were with her at the funeral cannot believe what has happened. Her death, according to Police, marks Toronto’s 47th homicide of the year and one of four in the GTA in under 24 hours.

If you want to liberate your body, liberate your mind - Sam Kutese By: Masimba Tafirenyika From Africa Renewal: Recently the United Nations declared 20152024 as the International Decade for the People of African Descent. Africa Re n e wal‘ s M as imba Tafirenyika sat down with the president of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly, Sam Kutesa, who is also Uganda’s f o r e i g n m i n i s t e r, t o discuss why the global body is so concerned about discrimination against people of African descent. The following are the excerpts: Africa Renewal: When we talk of people of African descent, who are we including in this definition?

Sam Kutesa: People of African descent are people who are scattered all over the world, who originally came from Africa or from the same African culture. They were dispersed largely by the slave trade or colonialism. These are people who are Africans but live mainly in the diaspora.

Why did the UN declare a whole decade in their honour?

The reason is that these people, being dispersed worldwide and having come as slaves, remain marginalized and racially discriminated against.

The UN felt that in order to fight racism and

We believe that this decade should draw attention to these dangers. The UN views all of us as born equal.

The slave trade ended more than a century ago. Why we are still being reminded of such a painful past?

We are reminded of this painful past because its consequences are still with us. The consequences of discrimination and marginalization that resulted from slavery are still rampant in the world. It is important that we work to eliminate them. We already have conventions that talk against them – the 2001 World Conference on Racism, for example, acknowledged these

consequences. That is why we are now dedicating a whole decade to remember. And let me tell you that it is important to remember so as to make sure it is not repeated. For example, we remember the Holocaust – it is not because it was not painful, it was very painful, and so was slavery. We must remember slavery to ensure that it doesn’t happen again. Of course, it is also important to know that slavery goes on in some parts of the world. If you don’t condemn what took place a hundred years ago, you won’t prepare yourself to tackle what is happening now. There is still trafficking of people; there is still slavery of black people in countries like Sudan.

There are arguments that the victims of slavery should be compensated just as we have seen compensation for Holocaust victims, which you just spoke about.

What is the UN position?

There is no UN position; but there are national positions. Some countries’ jurisdictions admit that people should be paid reparations. But the UN has so far not considered a resolution on reparations.

However, Article 4 of the UN Declaration on Human Rights talks about the right to an effective remedy by competent national tribunals for acts violating fundamental rights of people. You have to go to national jurisdictions to be able to claim reparations.

Even that too depends; I know that there are some jurisdictions that have made the decision to claim compensation very difficult because the claims could be phenomenal. Our best bet may not be reparations but to ensure we end discrimination and marginalization so that it doesn’t happen again.

That’s the best bet we can look for as a remedy.

Reparations will depend on the jurisdictions and legislation within countries.

Even in this day and age - you gave the example of Sudan - there are countries including Niger and Mauritania still practising slavery. What is the UN’s role in ending modern-day slavery?

We need to condemn them. We need to isolate them. We need to sanction them because these are against fundamental h u m a n r i g h t s . We

should do that both at the level of the UN and regional organizations to make sure we end slavery because where there is slavery there is marginalization, there is trafficking and there is under-paying of people.

Do you see happening?

Studies have shown people of African descent have limited access to services like education and health. What is the best way to address these inequalities?

• Proverbs 15:22 – “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”

• Proverbs 16:3 – “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.”

• Proverbs 16:9 – “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.”

• Proverbs 20:18 – “Make plans by seeking advice; if you wage war, obtain guidance.”

What are you currently doing that is strategic for you? Are you a strategic thinker?If so,does your calendar include specific blocks of time for strategic thinking? The people of Jerusalem needed only 52 days to rebuild a city wall that had been in ru­ins for more than 120 years. Do you agree that strategic thinking was a key reason for this remarkable achievement?

In our thinking journey based on the Bible and John Maxwell’s two books “How Successful People Think” and “Thinking For Change” we have looked at what thinking is all about

and what right and good thinking can do for us. We have so far looked at four different thinking skills that successfully godly people live with to make a difference in their faith, families, firms and foes.

This month we will engage with strategic thinking— the significance of being strategic in our thinking as Christians or Ghanaians.

There is power in strategic thinking. How do we release that power for our benefit? Better still, how do we release that power for the benefit of God’s kingdom?

From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible reveals the execution of God’s strategic plan for the redemp­tion of fallen humankind. The promised Messiah, the virgin birth, the sacrificial Lamb on the cross, the victorious resurrection, the ascension back to Heaven, the birth of the Church at Pentecost,

the gospel preached to the Gentiles and the Second Coming of our Lord are key parts of God’s strategic thinking.

Strategic thinking can be observed in the ministries of Moses, Joshua, Nehemiah, David, Jesus, Paul and other biblical leaders. Sadly, today, many Christians spend more time planning their next holiday than plan­ning their lives. It is often said: “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”

Strategic thinking is crucial to good planning. Strategic thinking enables a leader to maximize his strengths, become more efficient and find the most direct path to achieving his goals.

What are some of the Benefits of Strategic Thinking According to John Maxwell, the following twelve standout among many others: 1. Strategic thinking is planning at the highest level. Are you planning?

2. Strategic thinking requires you to ask the right questions. Are you asking the right questions?

How then, do you release the power of Strategic Thinking?Do these seven things well: 1. Break down the issue into manageableparts,2. Ask

“Why” before “How”,3.

Ask probing questions to identify the real issues. 4.

Inventory your resources (money, people, supplies, abilities, etc.), 5. Develop your plan, 6.

Put the right people in the right place, 7. Become a continuous strategic thinker.

Nehemiah an example of a Strategic Thinker: (Nehemiah 1:4-2:8) Nehemiah was a strategic t h i n k e r. T h e w a l l o f Jerusalem was in shambles and urgently needed to be re­s tored. It seems remarkable, but Nehemiah could see both the problem and the solution, even though he had never visited Jerusalem. Nehemiah knew his purpose, made his plan and led the people through the process. His story is truly one of the most remarkable accounts of leadership and strategic thinking ever recorded.

Look at his strategic thinking: 1. He saw the problem 2. He prayed for divine favor.

3. The problem became his problem 4. He developed his action plan.

5. He understood the resources that would be necessary for success.

6. He explained his strategy to other leaders.

7. He asked them for help

8. He established priorities 9. He was persistent God expects us to be strategic in our thinking.

Anytime we do that we are representing Him well. Like Nehemiah always ask God for help to be strategic in your thinking.

T he priest then stared at the boy before using his left hand to slap him. The boy’s parents and family reacted immediately, with the child’s father wrestling him away from the priest.

While some have described the cleric’s action as unintentional, the furor has since forced the priest to resign.

I told him to ‘calm down, calm down,’ but he was not calming down,” Lacroix said. “I tried to hold him close. I just wanted him to calm down.”

Ghana Diaspora Youth Forum at Toronto Plaza Hotel

The Diaspora Affairs Office of the President of the Republic of Ghana in collaboration with the Ghanaian-Canadian Association of Ontario’s (GCAO) Youth Wing organized a Ghana Diaspora Youth Forum (Toronto Edition) under the theme “Diaspora Youth: Creative Energy and Innovation for Ghana’s Development” was held on Saturday June 16, 2018.

The venue was Toronto Plaza hotel.

After the rendition of both national anthems of Ghana and Canada, the MC for the event Douglas explained the purpose of the gathering after which he called on Nana Kay Nti who is the leader of the Youth Wing to give his welcome address. It was followed immediately by a short speech by Nadia Adongo Musah, Deputy Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Office of the President of Ghana.

She touched on how she was tapped as a diasporan in Toronto here to be in the Diaspora Affairs office in Accra.
