your haven

In my early 20s, years before I worked anywhere near the interior design industry, I made a New Year’s resolution that I still think about today: I vowed to make my home my sanctuary. I was living alone for the first time and, with un-hung art and belongings arranged only haphazardly since move-in, I realized my apartment was a place I’d rather avoid than come home to. After the resolution, I hung art, Photograph by Rett Peek painted my dresser pink, and arranged my books by spine color. Even while low on budget and square footage, a few intentional decisions allowed me to finally relax in the space instead of finding every excuse to get out of it. Since the first case of COVID-19 in Arkansas was announced in early March, this idea of “loving your space” is something our team has talked about a lot (via Zoom, of course). For those who have been able to stay home while social distancing, your house might be filling a new role as a classroom or home office, and it can be hard to feel at peace in a place that’s working so much harder than usual. For those who haven’t, whose work is essential to the community, I hope your home feels like a refuge after a long day—after all, you’re keeping the nation running, and we are so grateful for your service. In publishing we’re always working ahead. I’m writing this letter about a month before the issue will land on newsstands, and it’s hard to know what our reality will be by the time it’s in your hands. All I can hope is that our magazine offers a bit of happiness and levity for our readers and that your home offers you sanctuary, especially now.

Around the At Home office, it’s no secret we love a good design book— both for the inspiration and ideas packed inside and for use in styling spaces in our own homes. Here are a few recent releases on our wish list: New England Modern showcases how New England designers are incorporating clean, cosmopolitan sensibilities into their designs. In Soul of the Home: Designing with Antiques, designer Tara Shaw gives tips on selecting antiques to suit your style. And to broaden your worldview a bit, look to Beyond the West: New Global Architecture, which turns its focus toward design in Asia, Africa, and the Americas (available June 9). Visit our blog (athomearkansas.com/blog) for more design book picks.

DESIGNING WOMEN FAYETTEVILLE

The television series Designing Women was a hit when it aired on CBS from 1986 to 1993—even garnering such accolades as Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe nominations— and it holds a special place in fans’ hearts even now. The show featured the antics of four women working for fictional interior design firm Sugarbaker & Associates in Atlanta, though many Arkansans recognize the exterior of the house shown in the series as the historic Villa Marre in downtown Little Rock. Now the show has another connection to the Natural State: Designing Women’s creator, Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, has written a stage adaptation, which will premier August 12 at TheatreSquared in Fayetteville. theatre2.org

Colorful Containers Chris H. Olsen shares tips to fill your planters with seasonal color you can enjoy until fall

Concrete boxes give the illusion of flower beds bordering the edge of the home.

“Containers are like living floral arrangements,” says landscape designer Chris H. Olsen. “They can bring color, texture, and scent to any space.” However, you don’t want to keep planting and replanting different combinations throughout the season; it’s much more attractive to find a format that works and will thrive with a little upkeep. Chris notes that in the South the foliage will hold its color until the first frost, meaning you can get a lot of mileage—and eye candy— out of one planting if you play your cards right. One of the biggest challenges comes in knowing when

26 At Home in Arkansas | May 2020

to water, especially in the heat of the summer. Chris advises checking pots daily and watering when soil feels dry. However, if you can only water every other day, then at least be consistent. “Put yourself on a schedule and stick to it,” he says. Chris also notes the importance of fertilizing. “Miracle-Gro is my secret. I use it every four to five weeks; there’s a 500 percent difference in the lushness of these plantings,” he says, adding that a lot of plants burn out in mid-summer because they have leeched all the nutrients from their soil. Read on for four more tips to container garden success.

MASTER THE MIX

Don’t be afraid to mix different textures, shapes, and colors when it comes to your plantings. “We mix evergreens with tropicals; perennials with annuals,” Chris says. Just be sure they have similar light and water requirements so they will thrive together. Here, ‘Big Series’ begonias, ‘SunPatiens,’ variegated boxwood, and angelonia blend harmoniously for a cottage vibe.

GO BIG

“The fuller a pot is planted, the better. It not only looks beautiful but also shades the container from the sun, meaning it can retain water,” Chris says. Here, a ‘Phoenix Roebeleinii’ palm is nestled among trailing plants that spill over the sides. “I love this palm because it looks like a big fern,” he says. The cascading plants are all pre-potted baskets from Chris’s Jhemajang line, which he removed from their hanging baskets and repurposed here. These include ‘Supertunias’, sweet potato vine, lantana, and coleus.

“The fuller a pot is planted, the better.” —Chris. H. Olsen

G R O W

BE TOLERANT

Chris says to look for heat-tolerant varieties that will fare well in an Arkansas summer. He notes weeping cypress does well in this climate, and it adds height and texture to largescale containers. The coordinating blue pots are filled with coleus, asparagus fern, and blue scaevola (also seen below)—another very heat-tolerant option.

Chris encourages groupings of containers to create a big visual impact.

PRUNE FREQUENTLY

“When something doesn’t look good anymore, get rid of it,” Chris says. Having abundantly full containers and a large variety of plantings allows you to do this without creating a bald spot in your foliage. This grouping includes an anchoring Chinese fan palm, hibiscus, orange Gerbera daisies, yellow lantana, coleus, and ‘Everillo’ carex grass—all of which could be removed if they lost their luster during the season.

Little Rock locals who have frequented Hillcrest in the past year may have noticed the transformation of a small, nondescript residence near

Markham Street into a

bustling neighborhood bakery.

That’s thanks to Scott Loye and his daughter, Zara Schmidt, who celebrated the opening of Hillcrest Little Bakery earlier this year. “It was cool to see how excited the community was about it. The first few weekends there was a line out the door of people waiting,” Zara says, noting their limited seating only adds to the cozy atmosphere. The menu has all the makings of a sweet-meets-savory Southern breakfast—eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy, and pancakes— but with influences from all around the country. From hot chicken in Nashville to donuts in Chicago, Scott can usually point to the exact meal that made him think, We should do this in Little Rock. “I fell in love with this one place in

RECIPE

Bananas Foster Sauce

SHOP Seattle—not only did they have great biscuits, but they had a small kitchen that could put a lot of food out,” he says. One such menu item is the bananas Foster pancakes, which were inspired by Scott’s childhood trips to New Orleans, the birthplace of bananas Foster. Here, he and Zara share their recipe for the sauce that transforms a typical short stack into a dessert-forbreakfast treat.

¼ cup butter 1 cup brown sugar ½ teaspoon cinnamon ½ ounce banana liqueur 1 banana, quartered handful of walnuts, chopped 1 ounce dark rum

PREPARE

Combine butter, sugar, and cinnamon in a flambé pan or skillet over low heat. Cook, stirring until sugar dissolves. Stir in banana liqueur, then add bananas and walnuts to the pan. When bananas begin to soften and brown, carefully add rum. Continue to cook until rum is hot, then use a long match or grill lighter to ignite the sauce. When flames subside, lift bananas out of the pan and place over pancakes. Spoon sauce generously over the stack and serve immediately.

White first met the owners Little Rock home, she knew that with several coats of fresh paint, a few updated furnishings, and some current accessories she could help them infuse their fun-loving style into their home. “This was a great house, but it wasn’t truly reflective of their personality,” she says. The couple had worked with Jimmy Lasley to build the home in 2007 but, as time had passed, hadn’t put the same attention to detail into the furnishings. “Even though it’s a newer home, they wanted someone to help them truly finish it out,” the designer says. Jill updated the design without making any major structural changes and made an effort to use as many of the owners’ existing pieces as possible. For example, a high-contrast black-andwhite rug stayed in the dining room, while artwork was shifted from room to room in order to work well with new furniture layouts. Above all, the palette unites the updated look. “Every room has black, white, gold, and wood. It’s such a cohesive color story throughout the house,” Jill says. of this

HOME WORK

“We went back and forth on how to best use this room,” Jill says of the office (above), which is located just off the front entry. “Before it was a random mix of stuff,” she adds. She pulled an underused table from the screened porch and paired it with a new desk chair to create the setup. Leather chairs from Cantrell Furniture Design Center are a shapely and comfortable spot for guests, while a potted olive tree from Antique Brick Outdoor brings a bit of green to the space.

TABLE FOR FOUR

Drum shade pendants were swapped for gold cone-style versions to add a current polish.

One of the biggest updates came in the kitchen where dark countertops were traded for a white quartz that fits perfectly with the new palette. Previously, one side of the island had an overhang with limited room for barstools; when updating the surface, they opted to extend the countertop and create a second overhang, providing space to comfortably accommodate the entire family, which includes the couple’s teenage twins.

TWEAKED TO PERFECTION

In the dining room, Jill worked with the existing sheers, artwork, and rug. “This rug was really the starting point for the whole house,” she says, pointing out the strong black-and-white palette that runs through each room. A custom walnut table by local artisan Tommy Farrell is the focal point and can seat up to eight. Light walls were traded for a dark black, while a gold fixture was exchanged for a contemporary matte black option.

44 At Home in Arkansas | May 2020

FUN & FUNCTIONAL

The living room needed to be equally practical and chic. For starters, Jill specified a performance fabric on the roomy sofa, making it easy to clean. Swivel chairs with a low-profile back pivot to look into the kitchen, allowing conversation to flow from the island’s work surface to the living area. A painting by Little Rock artist Emily Cobb was relocated from the dining room to a prominent wall in the living room.

IN A NEW LIGHT

The master bedroom’s window placement prohibited the bed from being centered on a wall. Jill remedied the problem with an extended Roman shade that covers one of the windows. A platform bed, burled wood chests, and abstract art complete the look while adhering to the home’s palette.

COOL & COLLECTED

A library off the master suite plays host to a collection of 40plus pieces of jade McCarty pottery as well as several of the couple’s antique maps, all of which depict locations meaningful to them. While the chair rail, millwork, and grasscloth wallcovering were existing, Jonathan had everything painted in Benjamin Moore’s “Hale Navy” to add a masculine air that carries throughout the home.

An oversized ottoman covered in Shumacher’s “Zanzibar” serves as both a coffee table and a focal point in one of the living rooms.

Designer Jonathan Parkey of J. Parkey blends patterns, styles, and collections to imbue a Jonesboro home with life and history Like his path from Arkansas to New York and back, Jonathan Parkey’s design is anything but ordinary. A Jonesboro native, he moved to the Big Apple to pursue a career in theater after college in Michigan. Following a stint off Broadway, he found himself working in the fashion industry in luxury womenswear. “I opened up both retail spaces for the fashion startup I worked for, and that’s where I caught the bug of working in design professionally,” he says. Four years ago, Jonathan moved back to

Arkansas—“one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” he says—where he works with design clients in both his hometown and Little Rock. When the owners of this home called him on board, Jonathan had a vision for the house that would help them feel like they’d lived there for years. “The previous homeowners built the house with so much care and purpose, so the bones were spectacular. This project was about taking the bones and stripping it down to fit the new homeowners’ style.”

May 2020 | athomearkansas.com 49

The main challenge in achieving this came in working within the home’s open floor plan, where the kitchen, dining room, and two living spaces all adjoin one another. “It makes a big ‘L’ shape, which is great flow for a party and when all the family is over,” Jonathan says. “With no formal dining and living rooms, we wanted to make sure it all worked together while giving each space its own distinct personality.” Uniform draperies and accents in a palette of primary colors help tie the living spaces together, while eclectic accessories and boldly patterned pillows and upholstery add character to each room. Jonathan was also mindful of incorporating some of the homeowners’ favorite antiques, rugs, and pieces of art, such as a limited edition Blue Dog print, into the design. “It was fun to pull out pieces that were hidden in their last home and really capture who they are right now in their life,” Jonathan says, noting the homeowners have several grandchildren, so the spaces also needed to work well for little ones. “I wanted it to feel lived in, like there’s history here even though it’s a fairly new house,” he says. “This has a look that could have been here a decade or two ago and will still be relevant in 30 years.”

BEFORE An airy sunroom is where the couple spends most of their time, often with their three dogs nearby. The pattern seen on the chair and pillow is Schumacher’s “Citrus Garden.”

50 At Home in Arkansas | May 2020

DAZZLING DISPLAY

In the more casual of the living spaces, a pair of navy couches and a mix of leather and midcenturyinspired armchairs provide seating for a crowd. “Even though it’s a traditional home, I wanted to create some surprising moments within the design,” Jonathan says of the mix of styles. While pops of pattern and refined fabrics add interest, the real showstopper is an antique Navajo Eye Dazzler rug Jonathan found at an antique show and had framed by M2 Gallery in Little Rock.

DINING DECISIONS

In the dining area, Jonathan made use of the table the homeowners brought from their previous house and added all of the leaves so it would make a statement. “I also wanted the biggest linear light I could find to help make this feel like its own space.” Upholstered seating encourages diners to linger, while a collection of ginger jars carries the home’s blue hue into the space.

BEFORE

KITCHEN UPGRADE

Jonathan worked with Tommy Westbrook of Westbrook Premier Kitchen & Bath to reconfigure the layout of the kitchen as well as replace cabinetry and countertops. One of the most significant changes came in creating two separate islands and installing cabinetry that reaches the ceiling. “This was all about making the kitchen function for the family, especially when all the grandkids come over,” Jonathan says. The combination of black fixtures, brass accents, woven barstools, and ogee edging on the quartzite countertops achieve a style that’s both refined and comfortable.

“The homeowner has always had a solid white kitchen, but she does love color and pattern,” Jonathan says, noting that all the red runners throughout the house came from her personal collection.

SMALL SPACES, BIG STYLE

BEFORE

Off the kitchen, a butler’s pantry (left) received an upgrade as well. Open shelving and café curtains were replaced with custom cabinetry, and a few select glass-front cabinets create a stylish display for the homeowner’s china and crystal. A basketweave backsplash and transitional light fixture turn the polish up a notch. In the powder bath (right), design decisions were based on the homeowner’s “gut instinct” about things she loved—for example, the wallpaper. While they left the vanity untouched, Jonathan designed a custom mirror to hang over it.

May 2020 | athomearkansas.com 53

SOFTER SETTING

The master bedroom takes on softer, more neutral tones of the palette used throughout the rest of the house. “I wanted to make this room feel as cozy as possible,” Jonathan says. He chose side tables, bedding, and custom pillows to complement the homeowners’ four-poster bed as well as the colors and fabrics used in the nearby library.

BEFORE

NEUTRAL DESIGN

The former iteration of the master bath was completely open with glass-block walls separating the built-in tub from the shower, and a single vanity situated between the doors to his-and-hers closets. To make this space more functional for two people, Jonathan had the closet doors moved out to accommodate a double vanity. A largescale checkerboard pattern underfoot plays off patterns found throughout the rest of the house, and a sleek freestanding tub completes the space.

Modern Farmhouse Makeover

LIVING LIGHTER

In the living room, one of the biggest changes came in extending the brick surfacing all the way across a focal wall. White paint (Sherwin-Williams’ “Dover White”), which is repeated on the ceiling in between the beams, unified the structural elements and achieved the fresh look the owners desired. The offset hearth was updated with patterned tile while a custom iron firewood holder is as beautiful as it is functional.

East of Little Rock sits a picturesque country retreat with an abundance of outdoor amenities and no shortage of peace and quiet.

“We really fell in love with this property and wanted to be here all the time,” says one of the owners of the land and an existing home, which was originally meant to be a getaway. They sold their main residence in 2009, made a few practical updates to the cabinlike house, and moved there full time. However, after nearly a decade they were ready to give the space new life.

“It started with me coming out to tweak the kitchen and paint. Over time it turned into much more,” says designer Katie Rees of Katie Grace Designs. “They wanted it to be right.” After several conversations and with proper respect to the setting and the home, they settled on a style one of the owners refers to as a “modern farmhouse with industrial flair.” “We were going in a million different directions with ideas when Katie came along. She really helped us to pull it all together.”

The owners knew they wanted to keep the form of the staircase but update its look. The final design, an industrial style, needed to be echoed in other areas to make the home feel cohesive. Numerous pieces, including the light fixtures, side tables, and accessories, carry this vibe throughout the open floor plan downstairs.

A waterfall quartz countertop neatly rounds off the end of the bar while bringing a slightly more modern look to the kitchen.

BEFORE

While new furnishings and functional makeovers—like converting an underused mudroom into a butler’s pantry—were made throughout, one of the biggest transformations came in the palette. Heavy wood stain and dark accent colors were traded for white paint and light accessories throughout the home. “Everything she pinned was all white and had lots of texture,” Katie says of the inspiration. “We are project people, and in this house and other homes we would get 50 to 75 percent of the way through but never really complete everything,” one of the homeowners says. “We wanted this house to be finished out completely.” To that point, Katie updated every room down to the tiniest of details, leaving no wall blank and even stocking linens and organizing the pantry. “We really love our home, and—especially at a time like this—it’s so nice to have a place where you enjoy being.”

60 At Home in Arkansas | May 2020

COOKING UP A PLAN

When Katie initially came to the job, new countertops and paint colors for the kitchen walls and cabinetry were the top priorities. However, as the scope expanded, new cabinetry, appliances, lighting, plumbing fixtures, and tile were added to the list. “There is a ton of base cabinetry in this room, so we went with open wooden shelving along the top of one wall, which also feels less heavy visually,” Katie says. In an effort to keep some original parts of the space intact, the brick behind the range remained but was updated with a coat of paint.

A beverage fridge and designated storage for appliances and entertaining essentials as well as food make the new butler’s pantry supremely functional. Shiplap on the back wall and the ceiling were kept in place to retain some of the home’s character.

BEFORE

GOOD CLEAN FUN

“I knew we were in trouble when I saw this dog wash station on Pinterest,” laughs one of the owners. The couple has four dogs, and living on rural property where the pups can roam and play means frequent baths. The standing-height tub with a pull-down faucet makes for easy work, and the tile surround can be quickly cleaned. Loads from the dryer can be taken to the opposite wall, which has space for sorting, folding, and hanging as well as concealed storage.

BRIGHT & FRESH

In the master bedroom, dark wood floors were stripped and re-stained with a whitewash treatment. Overhead, the beams kept the wood stain while the tongue and groove ceiling was refreshed with a coat of white paint. Similarly, rustic-style furnishings were traded for more transitional pieces with a lighter palette. The artwork over the bed was commissioned from Little Rock artist Amanda Kella. “I had a vision of a print in acrylic and shared my thoughts and a couple of fabric swatches with her, and she nailed it, Katie says.

TIMELESS ESCAPE

In the master bath, the footprint remained the same. Mitered white quartz surrounds the tub, while an over-scale custom light fixture draws the eye upward. On the opposite wall an alder wood vanity with a custom whitewash stain speaks back to the whitewashed floors in the adjoining bedroom. “I knew they wanted white and crisp, but with so much detail already in the shiplap, we went really simple,” Katie says. “They will never tire of this.”

Freshen Up Not all home projects last weeks or months—there are plenty of ways to improve your décor with simple, thoughtful changes. Look to these suggestions for five easy updates you can achieve in a single weekend

Color Confidence

Sometimes all a room needs for new life is a fresh coat of paint. Don’t be afraid to go bold with color—think navy blue, sage green, or even black—in a room that craves more character. Look to accents throughout the rest of your house for guidance on picking the perfect shade.

Lighting Upgrade

Decorative lighting is another example of where a small project can make a big difference. If you’ve never loved the chandelier in your dining room or the pendants over your kitchen island, those can be easily replaced for more meaningful options that represent your style.

All images from At Home in Arkansas archives. Photos by Rett Peek.

Heightened Hardware

Do you feel as though your cabinetry could use a boost, but you’re not ready to invest in an all-out kitchen or bathroom renovation? Consider changing out the hardware. Swapping outdated pulls for knobs in a different shape or finish can go a long way in giving cabinets new life.

Wall to Wall

If you’re feeling even more adventurous, consider wallpapering one of your spaces to add panache. Powder rooms and laundry rooms are great small spaces for going big with pattern. You might also consider a bedroom or kids’ space as an area where you can turn up the style with an accent wall.

Styling Savvy

Shop your home for vases, books, houseplants, and accessories, and spend some time moving things from one room to the other for new configurations that might help you see things you already own and love in a whole new light.

Ready to Renovate Invest in one or more of these long-term remodeling ideas and you’re sure to fall in love with your home all over again

Rethink Your Boundaries

Have you always dreamed of an open floor plan where conversation flows freely and everyone feels like they are together? Or, on the opposite end of the spectrum, do you need more defined spaces to keep your home organized in zones? Consider removing or adding a wall to create the space of your dreams. Consult a contractor to discuss which walls are vital to your structure and which ones can be more easily manipulated.

Make Hardworking Look Good It’s no secret the kitchen, bath, and laundry room are the most functional rooms in our homes—and, often, where we spend the most time. Shouldn’t they be as pretty as they are practical? Upgrade your surfaces and cabinetry, consider a new backsplash tile, or install plumbing fixtures with a finish that will make you actually want to do the dishes.

Hardwood, tile, or carpet—our floors take daily abuse from our everyday lives and they shouldn’t be overlooked. While new flooring throughout the home can be a big investment, it’s one you’re sure to appreciate every day.

Re-energize Your Space

While it may not be the most glamorous category, energy updates can pay off big in both savings and return on investment. Install energy efficient windows and doors, or upgrade your insulation for the biggest impact.

If your outdoor living area doesn’t make you want to be living outdoors then it might be time for an upgrade. Consider a fire pit or fireplace, update your deck, add a pool, or install a play area for kids. These investments could bring joy and peace for years to come.

COLLECTIONS

green with beauty While glassware is often a beloved collectible, it’s rare the pieces are as functional as they are fashionable. Jadeite fits the bill for both. Mass-produced during the 1930s and ’40s in America, the green, milk glass-style pieces became known for the spark of color they brought during some of the country’s toughest times; moreover, Jadeite was affordable to make. Diners and restaurants liked the thick material that could stand up to forks and sinks alike, and it began to catch on with consumers. While some department stores carried Jadeite, many people grew their collections piece by piece as oatmeal, flour, and other pantry staple manufacturers placed a cup or saucer inside a bag, enticing buyers to continue purchasing their goods to acquire a full set. Jadeite has experienced a resurgence in popularity over the past 15 years, meaning you can find newly produced goods at home stores. However, if you’re on the hunt for a more authentic piece—perhaps one with the coveted “Fire King” or “McK” (for McKee Glass Company) marking— you’ll need to be among the first to arrive at your neighborhood estate sale.
