My Two Homes/ Mis Dos Hogares
The My Two Homes project is an arts education curriculum developed by Root Division and taught by the Latinx Teaching Artist Fellows (LTAFs) to students in the ExCel Program at Mission Education Center. The goal of this class aims to build students’ understanding of their cultural backgrounds and ethnicities as well as their transition from their countries of origin to the United States. The course encourages students to use art exploration as a vehicle for storytelling and preserving tradition during their transition to a new home. My Two Homes aims to provide students with a safe, healing space to build creative and interpersonal skills.
Fellow artists Itzel Rios-Ellis and Wally A. Corona led students through a series of projects reflective of their own creative practices, including drawing, painting, sculpting, and collage. Students learned new techniques while exploring materials through an emergent process. Projects centered on personal identity while building on themes of memory, family, culture, and place. Their creations recall intimate memories of a world they once knew, but also express hopeful outlooks for their futures in their new home.

El proyecto “Mis Dos Hogares”, es un currículo de educación artística desarrollado por Root Division. El curso es dirigido por artistas y educadores Latinos que obtuvieron una beca para impartir clases a estudiantes del programa Excel en el Mission Education Center. El objetivo de la clase es ofrecer un espacio para que lo/as estudiantes puedan explorar su cultura y su proceso de transición a Los Estados Unidos. La clase motiva a lo/as estudiantes a explorar el arte como una herramienta de narración de historias que ayuden a preservar tradiciones durante la transición a su nuevo hogar. La misión principal de la clase Mis Dos Hogares es ofrecer a lo/as estudiantes un espacio sano y seguro en donde puedan desarrollar habilidades creativas y habilidades interpersonales.
Los maestros artísticos Itzél Rios-Ellis y Wally Corona guiaron a los estudiantes a través de una serie de proyectos que reflejan sus propias prácticas creativas, que incluyen dibujo, pintura, escultura y collage. Los estudiantes aprendieron nuevas técnicas mientras exploraban materiales a través de un proceso emergente. Los proyectos se centraron en la identidad personal mientras se basaban en temas de memoria, familia, cultura y lugar. ABOUT THE LATINX TEACHING-ARTIST FELLOW
As an effort to more accurately reflect neighborhood diversity in the Studio Artist community and teaching core, Root Division launched our Latinx Teaching Artist Fellowship (LTAF) in Fall of 2010. With additional funding and support for the program, we have been able to support two Latinx Teaching Artist Fellows every year since 2012. We recruit Latinx artists who speak both English and Spanish fluently, have experience teaching youth, and have a strong studio practice. LTAFs receive free studio space at Root Division’s facility for a year in exchange for teaching at Mission Education Center. As part of a year-long artist-teacher in residency, LTAFs teach a dedicated curriculum called My Two Homes to each grade level at the school. My Two Homes is a 10-month project that investigates and navigates the immigration process, in particular the move from one home to another. The fellowship is a mutually beneficial response to the needs of this school population, while simultaneously creating professional opportunities for Latinx artists.

ACERCA DE LA BECA DE ARTISTA PROFESOR LATINX
Por el esfuerzo de reflejar con mayor precisión la diversidad de nuestra comunidad de artistas y la comunidad de nuestro núcleo de enseñanza, Root Division puso en marcha la Beca Artista-Educador Latinx (BAEL) en el otoño del 2010. Con el financiamiento adicional y el apoyo del programa, hemos podido apoyar a dos artistas becarios desde el año 2012. Reclutamos a artistas latinos que hablan Inglés y Español, que cuentan con experiencia educando a jóvenes y que también cuentan con una práctica artística de taller sólida. El BAEL recibe un estudio de arte gratis por un año en Root Division a cambio de dar clases de arte en Mission Education Center--una escuela pública de Kinder a Quinto grado, que da servicios a estudiantes que emigraron recientemente de América Latina. Durante la residencia de Artista-Educador de un año, el BAEL enseña un currículo llamado “Mis Dos Hogares” a cada uno de los grados de la escuela. Mis Dos Hogares es un proyecto de 10 meses que explora y navega el proceso de inmigración, en particular la mudanza de un hogar a otro. La beca otorgada por Root División representa una respuesta a las necesidades de esta población escolar. Esta beca no solo beneficia a los estudiantes, sino también crea oportunidades profesionales para artistas latinos.

MISSION EDUCATION CENTER
Mission Education Center is a Pre-K-5 elementary school for newly arrived Spanishspeaking immigrant students. This transitional program helps newcomer students achieve the necessary skills and confidence to succeed in the schools to which they will transfer at the end of one year. The teachers are Spanish bilingual and credentialed to work with a newcomer population. The instruction at MEC is completely in Spanish for the first year and occurs before students integrate into other schools within the school district. Mission Education Center’s main focus areas include oral English proficiency, academic success in Spanish and English, and orientation to life in a new community. Root Division helps to fill Mission Education Center’s need for Spanish-speaking teaching artists with relevant life experience.
Mission Education Center (MEC) es uno de los programas creados para estudiantes de grados Pre-K hasta quinto que son “recién inmigrantes” a los Estados Unidos. Este programa transicional ayuda a los “recién inmigrantes” a lograr las habilidades académicas y las competencias para tener éxito en las escuelas que se van a transferir al fin del primer año. Las maestras de MEC son bilingües y tienen su credencial para trabajar con niños recién emigrados. Las áreas de focus de MEC son proficiencia en Inglés oral, éxito académico en Inglés y Español, y la orientación de la vida en una comunidad nueva. La enseñanza en MEC es completamente en español durante el primer año y ocurre antes de que los estudiantes se integren a otras escuelas del distrito escolar. El MEC tiene clases de artes visuales, pero Root Division satisface la necesidad de tener artistas-educadores hispanohablantes que cuentan con una experiencia de vida similar a la de los estudiantes.

ABOUT EXCEL AT MEC
The after-school program was started in the spring of 2007 and is dedicated to serving a diverse population of Latin newcomer students. During the week students participate in a variety of academic enrichment and recreation activities. The program offers various enrichment classes throughout the school year; cooking, art, gardening, dance, academic games, and STEM. Our newcomer students need support to help them adjust and transition to their new country. The goals are to create a learning environment that is welcoming and engaging to students and families and to support newcomer students through their transition. Students engage with and are exposed to a variety of academic, enrichment, and recreation activities that will allow them to build skills that will help them in the future. The students are very eager and excited to learn, and they have a strong willingness to succeed.
El programa de después de escuela se inició en la primavera del 2007 y está dedicado a servir estudiantes Latinos recién llegados. Durante la semana los alumnos participan en actividades de enriquecimiento académico y recreación. El programa ofrece clases durante el año escolar tales como cocina, arte, jardinería, poesía, danza, juegos académicos, teatro y ciencia. Estos estudiantes necesitan mucho apoyo, consejo y asistencia para adaptarse y hacer una transición a su nuevo país. Los objetivos de este programa son crear un ambiente de aprendizaje que también dé la bienvenida a los estudiantes y a sus familias, y que apoye a los estudiantes durante su proceso de transición. Los estudiantes participan y están expuestos a una variedad de enriquecimiento académico que apoyan construir herramientas para ayudarlos en el futuro. Los estudiantes están emocionados y ansiosos por aprender y tienen una gran voluntad de aprender.

Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Wally A Corona is a visual artist based in San Francisco, Ca. After four years of military service Corona earned his BFA in Painting and Drawing from California College of the Arts, where he currently works in residential education. His work is influenced by graffiti and comic book aesthetics and is often centered around drawing and found objects. ENGLISH/ INGLES
Originalmente de San Antonio, Tejas, Wally, A. Corona es un artista visual basado en San Francisco, California. Itzél Rios-Ellis is a Mexican-American artist based in San Francisco, California with a BFA in Illustration from California College of the Arts. Engaging with a diverse array of mediums—including painting, digital and traditional illustration, fiber arts, printmaking, sculpture, and design — Rios-Ellis navigates multiple artistic avenues to convey distinct and evocative messages. Her work particularly delves into the themes of the body and the notion of home. Through her art, she explores these complex aspects of her life, creating a visual narrative that speaks to personal growth and the impact of these experiences on her artistic expression.

Itzél Rios-Ellis es una Artista Mexicana-Americana basada en San Francisco, California con una licenciatura en Ilustración de California College of the Arts.
