CENTRAL SQUARE:

AN UNDERGROUND URBANISM INTERVENTION

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT

CHENNAI CENTRAL is a bustling area in the heart of the city, better to call it as the heartbeat of the city. Chennai central railway station being one of the major and busiest railway stations in India.

Hosting one of the oldest and active railway network in South India it laid to the expansion of suburban railway and city railway network with it as the centre promoting transit for the influx of population that commutes through

l whilst still being the major transit hub, which it is, this led to an uncontrolled and poorly managed public space.

With the development of Chennai metro railway network the need to improvise this urban space had resurfaced. The current development has changed a certain portion of the site into a plaza with a facility of subway connecting the suburban railway side and park town side, along with the 3 tier

this locality on a regular basis, this further led to its development as a hub for commercial activities with marketsbeing set up as early as the 1900’s. Further it also became a spot for entertainment such that a zoo was set up here. It acted as a important location for several movements during Indian Independence.

In the event of time these facilities started to be shifted away and the hub started to ack its character as a potential urban hub,

underground stations and a basement parking, there are few eateries near the ticket counters and many opotential open spaces for stalls.

“To promote more open space in a highly dense locality and boost activity by tapping the potential hidden underground”

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT

RAPID URBANISATION IN INDIAN CITIES

BENGALURU

With the boom of industrilisation, and globalisation of commerce in India during the late 90’s the nations urban centers such as New Delhi, Mumbai,Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad saw rapid growth and development which resulted in more number of population shifting towards these cities for better oppourtunities.

This led to an accelerated boom in infrastructure and beyond-the-control expansion of the city imits which further led to concerning scenarios of the overall land use. Further these cities started to break down and form satellite cities and towns such as shown in the illustration.

This scenario calls for the nedd to re visualise the ways these cities will function to maintain sustainble growth for the future generations.

In the exploration, having taken the cases of superblocks and vertical cities concept from the examples of major cities around the world the aim is to create a solution that goes well with the Indian urban profile and also promotes a better way to develop as a community.

“ A concept to develop neighbourhoods that are sustainable and adaptable to the future needs”

EASTERN MANGROVES

MIXED USE WATERFRONT COMMUNTIY IN ABU DHABI

TEAM PROJECT

Located at the verge of civilization just opposite to the Eastern Mangroves national park, our vision was to create a seamless edge between the waterfront and the land mimicking the desert and water interface.

Through our intervention we were able to provide more shaded and semi shaded zones across the street and waterfront for the comfort of the pedestrians.

My role in this project was particularly focused on the development of the front promenade and also the main internal lobbies.
