Welcome to the first Porsche Club Queensland magazine for 2015 – our 41st year. After a big 2014 we have taken it upon ourselves to make a few rolling changes – for the better we hope for the year ahead. A few tweaks in our club magazine where we are now including a Porsche ‘centrefold’ of our members sweet rides. I’m sure many of our members have more recent photos of their Porsche than perhaps of their parents so pick a favourite and send them in.

In keeping with 2015 being a year of democratic change – a special shout out to all of our Ashgrove club members – we have since last year decided to implement a review of our Motorsport competition rules and class’s. A top to bottom review in the interests of fairness.

Ian Gall and his subcommittee has drafted for discussion a 2015 motorsport competition targeted at attracting more PCQ competitors and importantly more track day enthusiasts not necessarily interested in winning any championship. You can run in the championship or you can run as per normal and just get timed. A competition embraced by hard core track day fanatics chasing times supported in the next pit bay by first timers and regulars with no other interest in the competition. Of interest I’m sure will be the prize of $2000 being offered by the club for the 2015 competition. This is to increase track day numbers. New car classes for 2015 will be in effect. These have been deemed to be fairer to all members competing.

I would like to welcome to the PCQ Committee Romy Humphries who has taken on the responsibilities of Club Merchandise. Apologies for the delay if you have been waiting but that’s another story.

We have just placed further orders for shirts (long and short sleeve) Porsche Club Queensland merchandise along with 150 Porsche caps. We are keen to have some additional cool Porsche merchandise for our ‘winter range’. Please keep an eye out on our Porsche Club Queensland face book page and PCQ club website for further updates on how to purchase. Otherwise if our Merchandise release is not selling well we will have to get Greg McWhinney modelling at club nights again. So please don’t delay. (Just joking Greg xx)

We have been putting an added effort into our monthly club nights with more special guests this year and we look forward to seeing attendance numbers increase. We have just passed 500 PCQ members which I believe is a club record for a February with many more months yet to go. We may see 600+ members which would be fantastic.

planning our popular Noosa weekend get away again this year including supporting the Noosa Hill climb (yes!). While I’m on the subject of Hill Climbs - Mt Cootha is holding the 2015 sprint event on Saturday the 5th of September 2015 after a break of a few years. Refer our face book page.

Greg is working hard planning a weekend road trip to Stradbroke Island on the vehicle ferry which will a special day. I expect we will end up at Point Lookout having a quite one. More details will follow. This drive day is a chance for our Macan and Cayenne owners to shine and lead the way. The PCQ Committee is in early planning of our 2015 xmas party and current thinking is holding another themed Saturday night in late November at Manly Harbour. Just reviewing options on dates and importantly what the theme is for 2015? Any ideas?? Email away. Rest assured it will be a fantastic night.

We will telegraph the theme when its locked down so you have time to think through what you are going to ‘wear’ and blow us all away.

As I am sitting writing my editor’s letter, I can hear Derek in the garage working away on this ‘69 911 T. The car has gone from a working car to a project for almost a year now and his dedication towards the car is astonishing.

Derek did his research before he bought the T. This entailed weeks and months of searching for the best buy all over Australia. I’m sure if the car was in Tassie we would have made the trip; all in the name of research. Not that I would have minded at all! He was originally looking for a 1969 S, but they were few and far between and he settled for the T. The test drive didn’t start off well; the car stalled and would not restart. We knew that the car needed serious work when it arrived on a trailer. The T was within spec and budget and that was the main objections.

Derek got the car going after serious work to the brakes, suspension and engine and for the first couple of years enjoyed a few nice trips with it. The trip that stands out most is when my brother visited from the UK and we went to Stanthorpe for a weekend, he and Derek in the Porsche, and me and Rowen in the Toyota Hilux as the back-up car.

If ever I have an old Porsche that need to be refurbished, Derek will be my man. All the parts are removed, cleaned and restored and the stored in either marked zip lock bags or in crates. He very methodical and can see that he is looking forward to put everything back together. I love seeing him in “the zone” when he is concentrating on getting everything done in the right way; it’s either the right way or no way.

He doesn’t take any short cuts.

The search for parts takes a lot of time and he wants to keep the car as original as possible, although I think we might end with an S and not a T, but why not? We did a family trip to Europe in June last year and while myself and the kids went to an Italian cooking class, Derek took a day’s drive to the North of Italy to the small town of Turin to meet with someone he identified to supply replacement seats. It sounded like the conversation was interesting to follow with Derek’s Italian not to good and the manufacturer with his broken English. When you talk about cars the language is universal and they

Well it’s looking to be a great social year for PCQ member’s, I’ve planned different type of social events across 2015, including a few with motorsport.

Starting with Sunday 22nd Feb a mystery breakfast run – for those new to the club the idea is you’ll have to be at Mt. Coo-tha Lookout car-park between 7.00 & 7.20am. to receive your instructions to where we’ll be having breakfast – The only clue I’ll give is that at this stage is at the end of a 45-50 min drive you’ll be overlooking a part of Morton Bay enjoying a great breakfast.

Other events listed in clubs social diary will include – social drive’s north, south & west to picnic spots, restaurants – wineries – and a combine social/restaurant drive with the 356 club to celebrate Dr. Porsche’s birthday.

that the engine needs to be rebuilt, but when he started taking the engine out he wanted to repaint the engine bay and some of the body panels, he realized there is only one way to do it and that is to go all the way and refurbish the car.

had a good chat about the seats Derek wants.

Not only did he meet one of the best in the world to supply his seats, he enjoyed the dive through the mountains of Northern Italy.

Most of the parts have now been sourced, but it is a process to get everything together. At this stage he is still preparing the body before he can assemble everything. His timeline is to start assembling by the end February and have the car back on the road by November.

Anyone who has taken on a project like this will know it takes a lot of time and money, but if it is your passion, it’s worth it. Life is too short not to have passions. Live your life now and never regret your decision to start a Porsche project. If you have a new or an older Porsche we are all part of the family who is passionate about our cars and it is amazing to share that with the club.

I hope we can build the Club Magazine this year and it will be enjoyed by everyone and become a publication we can be proud of.

Island in April – where if you want bring your other “Porsche” – some will 4 x4, some will surf & others will relax with fellow PCQ members; & the second weekend away at Noosa in July for a combined 2 day social drive / motorsport weekend (Noosa -Hillclimb) – details to follow.

May - a progressive dinner with 1 or 2 meeting points to be met by a luxury charter bus to save driving & parking from place to place.

September - As something different I’ve planned an afternoon drive starting with a coffee and we’ll go for dinner in the Redlands bay area.

And as last year’s Club concourse was such a success at Noosa and as a social event as well, there has been a strong request from members that we go back again this year on the Sunday of the October long weekend – so let either me or Ian Preston know your thoughts.

Also we’ll ‘be-back’ at the Oktober fest 2015 In November a family fun night at Tony Quinn’s complex The Game Centre at Helensvale – for some in-door Go-Karting – rock climbing & family fun.

Christmas party this year looks to be another themed event – please let me know by the end of March your thoughts on a theme as we’ll need to book a venue straight away to ensure a date.

Porsche Targa High Country Tour – 2014 Article by Merry Sparks

Ever dreamed of driving your magnificent Porsche in safe conditions on superb country roads for longer than just a Sunday drive?

If you want to participate in a unique Porsche experience event which is inclusive of both your partner and your alpha-male self; and which brings you even closer together than before you did the event (believe it or not) then one of these would be it – a Porsche Targa Tour.

Indeed, you will probably adore the fact that having participated, your partner has become even more interested in cars - the smell of them; their power, style and grit; and the brand Porsche. What more could a bloke ask for?

So guys (and chicks), I know this mag is usually read by the man of the house rather than the woman of the house, do yourselves a favour… before you scrap this mag for the “read” pile next to the loo, prop it open to this page and put in on the vanity near her perfumes in the ensuite and invite her to read this article to entice her to join you spending a little dosh on a memorable car experience that you both won’t forget. It’s akin to dangling the bait in front of a fish – I know she’ll bite and you can reel her in to your web of passion for Porsche and motorsport if she’s not already entangled.

I’m already trapped and loving it.

I’m not going to lie, I’m a little deficient when it comes to knowledge of the finer details of motorsport and all the components of pretty Porsches but having said that, the last 10 years have seen a significant interest from me in cars, racing and rallying and I’m proud to say I can hold my own in a general conversation about the subject, at least more than the average woman.

I was raised in a close family of 4 in Adelaide which had a passion for cars and we owned a very stunning American gangster car – a concourse-condition 1929 Graham Paige; and now I’m married to a guy who was raised in a family with a significant motorsport history and experience (also from Adelaide). So there’s

really no escape for me from 4 wheeledpassion and as I’ve always said – “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em”. Having said that, I can’t really JOIN Sparksy when he’s racing around a track as there’s only one seat available, and it can get pretty tiring swallowing flies and kicking the dirt in between his races, as exciting as they are. That’s where this Porsche Tour thing is pretty exciting for both of you. It’s kinda like doing a “Clayton’s Rally” together with other like-minded souls, all the bells and whistles of 5-star comfort, less stress and much more fun over a much longer period than the time it takes to do donuts around a race track.

I may come across a little bit vague when asked a direct question about the finer details of the model of a participating Targa Tour car like its: engine model, torque, nut and bolt sizes, chassis shapes, etc, or it’s race category; or which Targa “stage” was the most grueling, so I’ll keep this overview basic about my experience of the Porsche Targa High Country Tour of 2014. I am: the passenger, the nav, the girl with “blonde tendencies” and the eccentric artist who sees things from a unique perspective to the mainstream person.

Oh, one other thing, to quote our president of the Club, Dave Beard, I’ve had the “Porsche Injection”. There is no other car I’d rather drive or be involved with and my enthusiasm for the brand is relentless. I’m a scaredy cat when it comes to driving on a racetrack (so I don’t race), but not when it comes to being a passenger or driving on the side of a mountain in a car which has more power than most Targa rally cars. I trust my ability as a nav, and Sparksy’s ability as a driver and together we make a great team, once he takes me seriously. We really have a blast together doing this stuff.

On Monday 3 November last year, we headed out from Brisy in our pretty, blue, 997 GT3 on a leisurely note without any real agenda other than to reach Lindenwarrah Boutique Hotel at Milawa, country Victoria, opposite the Brown Brothers Cellar and vineyards by Thursday

afternoon, 6 November.

We could have freighted the car and flown ourselves down to cut-to-the-chase, but I liked the idea of making a real holiday around the Targa Tour which lasted 3 full days, each with a minimum of 25 action-packed hours in the day – well that’s what it felt like. The whole trip totaled a week.

The 4 day drive down to base camp was fantastic. It was picturesque (there is no unattractive countryside in Australia as far as I’m concerned), and Sparksy had no escape from me, so I could catch up with him and chitchat about a whole lotta stuff along the way without him disappearing into his “shed” or flicking the telly on. Hey I don’t talk THAT much but it’s been difficult to harness my busy guy over the last year and really tune in together.

By Wednesday afternoon near The Dog That Sat On The Tucker Box and after a long lull in conversation he remarked to me “I can’t believe it – you’ve run out of something to say”…

Since we had already experienced in 2011, the Porsche Targa Tasmania Tour and the Porsche Classic Adelaide Tour, I pretty much knew what to expect. In a nutshell and in order of importance: an amazing social experience; Porsche 5-star service all the way (food, grog, accommodation and feature people such as Jim Richards, Barry Oliver and Walter Rohrl plus other cool Porsche racing car drivers); an Aussie tourism experience like no other, utilising your own Porsche, which included upbeat travel through magnificent countryside and superb “ooh-aah” visual scapes ripe for picture-postcard snaps; and delights that you might not ordinarily see, eat, smell or do; fresh handshakes and new long-term friendships; early crisp starts (buy hey we had early nights) and a daily convoy of gorgeous, sparkling Porsches ranging in models, ages and values.

Having reflected on all these highlights, perhaps these are all as important as each other after all.

Porsche Australia equips you supremely well before you start the Rally with booklets of

information, the formal Rally Guide book which the REAL navs refer to which helps to make the Tour nav feel really important, lanyards, Porsche jackets, and most importantly - the introductory speel and scrutineering brief

by John Murray of Porsche Australia, which focusses on safety first, then leisure and fun.

Your car also gets decked out in big, flash Targa stickers and Porsche windscreen banners and your car number which coincides with the Rally Safe Unit.

2014 was indeed the first year that ALL rally cars were equipped with Rally Safe Units which, due to technology and the-man-on-themoon, enabled the Rally Gods above to know exactly where you were, what speed you were doing at any point in time and whether you needed assistance of any sort. Yup – accidents DO occur for those who are: a) unfamiliar with the capabilities of their car; b) don’t drive to the conditions; c) take unnecessary risks or d) dunces. And so police, firies, tow-trucks and ambos are on standby and ready to go for all stages of the event. Having said this, I don’t want to dwell on the subject of accidents, because I don’t want to frighten you off and I want you all to join us with the Porsche Targa Tasmania event at the end of April 2015, but accidents across the entire Rally fleet do occur from time to time and it’s reassuring that the Rally event organisers have everything sorted.

You don’t need experience as a rally car driver or navigator to be part of the Tour section as this “rally” is for those of us who enjoy a more leisurely pace in our Porsches and don’t want the pressure of winning. Although I would recommend the driver do the Level 1 and possibly Level 2 driver training rather than learning about your car at the event. Don’t get me wrong though, you can push your car to a limit of 130km and that is ample on curly roads.

Your car doesn’t need to be fitted with anything special to participate either, but ours is fitted with an easily-accessible fire extinguisher (lucky me – not! - the massive bloody thing sits

between my legs – I think you can get smaller ones though), and your Porsche service center should probably take a squiz over your tyres and engine, nuts and bolts, before you depart from Queensland. Our car has a clear plastic skin covering the front, sides and bonnet and other Porsche owners taped theirs instead to protect the cars from stones chips. Oh, and stating the obvious - your car must be a Porsche. Silly question I know, but some Hyundai owners have asked. Porsches come from all over Australia to do the event.

Depending on the number of cars participating in the Tour (the High Country Tour in 2014 attracted about 20 cars, but Targa Tassie in 2011 attracted about 40 cars), and depending on your ability as a driver, you get sorted into your group – “packet” comprising 6 to 8 cars. There is no BEST packet to be in, but rather, the packet in which you think you sit comfortably without holding any one up and without screaming ahead leaving the rest behind. Each packet is led by an experienced Porsche instructor or racing car driver, and his/ her nav. Our packet leader was Alex Davison who is a current V8 Supercar co-driver with Erebus and he is also a former Porsche factory driver, and Dearne Riddell from Porsche Australia was his nav. The leading car in your packet sets the pace and you fall in behind, one car after another. A Porsche engineer, the lovely Warwick McKenzie, accompanies us with links to spare bits and pieces should we need them and he’ll do anything to help you even cleaning the bugs off your windscreen if he thinks it looks like Vaseline glass.

For those who don’t know, there are “tour” sections and “stage” sections and the general motto for rallying is “hurry up and wait”.

Touring just means the nav has to be on the ball getting the driver from A to B to the next stage, whilst chewing on another snake and taking a snap where you can. The stages are the more serious bits and that’s when the nav has to concentrate a little more and read out

the turns from your notes well in advance for the driver. For this, it’s best to set the Rally Safe Unit to “0” at the start of each stage, then watch the numbers roll over and reflect on this in conjunction with holding your notes at horizon level so you don’t get car sick reading out the next bit of information. But you don’t read out the information so far in advance that the driver is completely confused when he/she approaches a left turn when you, the nav, really meant to call a right turn just as you approach it. Yeah – it was a little tricky for me to get use to again after a couple of years, and there is sooo much to look at all at once outside my passenger window. My saving grace is that I hold my notes up the right way; plus I’m a great multitasker so I can visually feast on the beautiful scenery as well as nav Sparksy; bark that he’s going too fast occasionally; brake on my passenger side of the car; and chew on a snake. Lipstick application and general chitchatting is reserved for the “tour” sections.

Some Targa Tour enthusiasts even set up a satellite dish in their car and have all the newmillennium mod cons to boot, but we think that’s a bit OTT. We toured to each stage (of which there were about 16 over the 3 days) up and down the stunning skiing territory of Mt Buller and the surrounding rolling mountains, hills, flat country and towns. We experienced all the neighbouring roads and their straights, twists and turns just before the official Rally cars kick off. There is no oncoming traffic as all roads are blocked off so it’s just you, your babe and your baby. And it’s good to be on your toes watching out for a loose skippy or koala too.

It’s also nice to thank all the volunteer staff at all the stages along the way as some of them come up from Tassie and they volunteer around Australia for all the Targa events.

That’s awesome commitment in my opinion, so they are deserved of souvenir trinkets like cool bumper stickers and posters and flags of the occasion, and snakes. Telly crews are also

loitering so footage of the day can be shown on local news channels as there is no doubt that a string of Porsches, followed by the rest of the official Rally cars attracts a lot of attention to local towns.

Each day is broken up with breaks for legstretching, sight-seeing and socializing with a well catered and well organized morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. At the end of each day, you: tour back to the hotel which was exclusively booked for as – in this instance it was the Breathtaker Alpine Spa Resort in Mt Buller; reflect on the performance of you as a team, and your baby; wipe her nose and pump her tyres if she needs it; then head up to the bar in the hotel to sink a few coldies. After calming down a bit, dinner is usually an hour afterwards in a lovely restaurant within the hotel, or elsewhere with beautiful food and wine, and we are accompanied by a Porsche guest of honour who gives a fantastic, interesting speech. Yep – take with you, your big fat black texta for autographs, plus your phone-cam for selfies.

You sit where you like and Sparksy and I adore mixing it up a little. Alcohol sets a party pace every night but remember, you both need to blow zero the next morning or you sit out and wear the dunce cap.

The last night is always more brilliant than those beforehand as new friendships have been formed and cemented and a number of silly awards which put a smile on your dial are presented to participants. Too much wine is drunk but that’s ok on the last night, and lots of driving stories are stretched to the max. A fab Porsche Targa Experience coffee-table book including photos of your very own car insitu on the stage roads is available to buy for your mother-in-law so she doesn’t forget who her favourite son-in-law is.

You leave the next day feeling that the money you’ve parted with is so worth the excitement and the pleasure and you look forward to the next Tour together which is at the end of April, early May 2015.

Here’s Pamela Ward’s input to this article which is a little more succinct than mine: Our Tour started with lunch at Lindenwarrah Boutique Hotel in Milawa and following this, our first closed road stage was up the Mt Buller Road.

We checked into the Breathtaker Alpine Spa Resort and dinner that night was at Breathtaker’s Signature Restaurant with special guests, Jim Richards and Barry Oliver.

On Saturday, we did 8 closed-road stages heading out via Tolmie to Whitfield, a visit to Pizzini winery and then we returned via Mansfield with a closed-road town stage in the heart of Mansfield. Drinks and finger food was served as the tour group watched the competitors complete the town stage. Then we headed back up the mountain for a cocktail party in the Delatite Suite of the Mt Buller Chalet.

On Sunday we did another 8 closed-road stages. This time we headed out towards Jamieson and Eildon. We returned to the Lodge in time for a relaxing afternoon tea, followed by the opportunity to see the competitors finish the event and Jim Richards win the Showroom Class in his Cayman S. The Farewell Dinner that night was held at Apres Restaurant.

On Monday, participants departed at leisure.

It will be bigger and better than ever, and it includes tickets to Hobart’s state-of-the-art MONA which is on par with New York’s MOMA. Come Drive With Me Article & Photos by Kent Kieseker It started out as both a personal challenge and a desire to drive some roads from my youth; and it turned out to be one of the best drives I’ve had in the nine years I’ve owned my car. My promise is to do it again with the Club and allow everybody to enjoy the same experience.

My challenge was to drive from Brisbane to Toowoomba without using the Warrego Highway. And it can done on bitumen, or as the photos show, it can be done on dirt as well. The route from Ipswich went along the Brisbane Valley Highway and turned left to head towards Atkinson Dam, then Gatton, Ma Ma Creek, Mount Whitestone, East Greenmount, Hodgson Vale, Middle Ridge (Coffee), Flagstone Creek, Ma Ma Creek, Laidley (Lunch) and back home.

On the journey came along Steve Foss, Phil and Gail Hart, Bob Gray (and son), Sheldon Arkinstall and myself (and son). We discovered some amazing roads existed in the hills that the Warrego Highway just seems to avoid. There was one section from Brisbane Valley to Atkinson Dam that had a view that was just awesome and some great curves. The section from Gatton to Hodgson Vale provided some great driving roads to engage the driver in all of us. Sweeping high speed curves followed by tight corners and then more sweepers, it was like 30km of Bathurst.

The trip home had the lead car leading us astray (that would be me) and we ended up on a dirt road that the farmer assured us was driveable and ended up at Laidley. He was right, and he was aware that we were driving different machinery than what he was used to seeing going past his house – which would have been cows normally on the way to the milking shed. As you can see by the photos, we all survived and the cars

did too. While having lunch at Laidley, the heavens opened up with a heavy storm and all our cars got a free car wash.

It was a memorable day and I will arrange with Greg McWhinnery to the take the Club on a social run for all to enjoy.

The benchmark in its class: the Porsche Cayman GT4

Australia. Porsche has added a new member to its GT family – the new Cayman GT4. This is the first time Porsche has introduced a GT sports car based on the Cayman which shares many of its components with the 911 GT3.

A lap time of 7 minutes and 40 seconds on the North Loop of the Nürburgring positions the Cayman GT4 as the new benchmark at the top of its market segment. It also makes a clear statement that Porsche will continue producing exciting two-door sports cars in the future – sports cars that are developed at the Motorsport department in Weissach.

The engine, chassis, brakes and aerodynamic design of the Cayman GT4 are configured for maximum driving dynamics; yet the top model still retains the versatility and everyday utility that is typical of the two-seat Porsche coupe.

The Cayman GT4 is powered by a 3.8-litre flatsix engine with 283 kW (385 hp), derived from the 911 Carrera S. Power is transmitted by a six-speed manual gearbox only incorporating dynamic gearbox mounts. Porsche’s new twodoor super star accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds and has a top speed of 295 km/h. The car’s NEDC fuel consumption is

10.3 L/100 km.

The chassis – which features a 30 mm lower ride height and a generously sized brake system – consists nearly entirely of components from the 911 GT3.

Fit for the race track: first Porsche Cayman with downforce at both axles The Cayman GT4 looks different to its siblings.

Three distinctive inlet openings at the front and a large fixed rear wing are part of an aerodynamic package which is systematically designed for downforce. For those wanting even more performance, the Cayman GT4

can be optioned with PCCB ceramic brakes, full shell seats made of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), a custom Sport Chrono Package with the unique Track Precision app and a Club Sport Package.

The interior of the Cayman GT4 is designed so that the driver and front passenger experience unfiltered driving enjoyment. It starts with the body-hugging sports seats, upholstered in a combination of leather and Alcantara; while the new GT4 sport steering wheel guarantees maximum control and direct steering feedback with its compact dimensions.

My 911 sc as a Wedding Car Photos & Article by Greg McWhinney I joined PCQ back in 1998 and as a dad of four children – (2 boys – 2 girls) it was always my pleasure to take one or two of them for a drive in the 911-SC, when they visited me during school holidays then later on when eventually came to live with me as young adults.

You remember with fond memories, the fun times you have taking the ‘kids’ for drives or taking friends or family members kids to school formals, then life moves on and you have the chance to make new memories as you enjoy your Porsche experiences.

In the last 5 years both my ‘boys’ have spoilt me by asking me if I they could have the 911-SC as their wedding car – I was over the moon for being asked. My eldest ‘boy’ asked if I would drive my 911-SC down to Tamworth for his wedding & as my second son was also doubling as a groomsmen he flew in from FNQ into Brisbane & shared some of the driving on the way down, it was a great time.

It was funny at the time, I had family & friends before & well after the wedding ask the same question? “How do you fit a Bride & her dad inside a classic 911 – my reply ‘very easy you just hand the keys to your 911over to the ’Father-of-the-bride & he drives his daughter ‘The Bride’ to the chapel – you know they don’t have to sit in the back seat of a car’.

So my first daughter-in-law was driven by her dad from the family home to the Garden Wedding chapel in the Tamworth Botanic Gardens & a great time was had by all. And the 911 took her place on the day and had plenty of admirers as well, and was featured in several wedding photos.

Then two ½ years ago my second son asked if I would drive the 911 down to Coffs Harbour as he & his ‘bride’ were to marry on the beach at Annuka Resort & they wanted the 911 as back-drop. As my ‘boys’ had swapped roles for this wedding with my eldest son being a Groomsman for his young brother I did remind him that this time his brother gets to say ‘I-Do’ not him like last time. This time a bit different as all family & friends were staying at the resort where the wedding took place no ‘wedding cars’ were required.

So I was asked to drive the ‘happy couple’ to the photo shoot, an told my son that as his ‘newbride” has the big dress she gets the front seat & my son happily jumped into the back seat as he wasn’t going to miss out on a ride in the 911 just like when he was a teenager.

Porsches were built by the Porsche family over many years by (Father – son – son-in-law) to be very versatile vehicles – Sports cars – passenger vehicles– race cars.

All are good for the soul no matter what the occasion, so next-time you look at your Porsche don’t see it as a vehicle why not think of it as a part of your family.

Icy thrills for Porsche pilots ahead of 2015 season

Australia. Ever wondered what it’s like to drive a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup on snow and ice? Just ask some of Australia’s top Porsche drivers.

The 2014 Porsche Carrera Cup runner-up Warren Luff, Elite Class runner-up Shane Smollen and GT3 Cup Challenge champion Fraser Ross were last week awarded a trip to Levi, Finland, by Porsche Cars Australia to participate in the top-level Porsche Driving Experience programme, Ice Force S. The prize was offered to the top three place-getters in the Professional Class and the Elite Class for 2014, though several drivers were unable to attend.

The four-day experience saw the Porsche racers and a host of Australian and international Porsche enthusiasts drift a range of Porsche, including the 911 GT3 and Turbo models, on Finnish frozen lakes. The drivers then graduated to the 911 GT3 Cup car, more commonly found on the Carrera Cup grid, for several laps of the ice circuit.

For Elite Class driver Shane Smollen, drifting Porsche’s most desirable sports cars on ice was an unforgettable experience.

“The combination of the amazing location, the organisation of the event and the driving skills required made this a very memorable week,” said Smollen.

“It was bitterly cold in the arctic circuit and right in the middle of extraordinary ice plains with some of the most exotic cars on the planet, including the GT3 Cup and the Porsche 918 – both of which we sampled, not to mention the snow mobiles and ice go-karting. It was truly an amazing experience.”

Warren Luff also returned with a new appreciation of the Porsche brand and the diverse abilities of the Carrera Cup race car.

“I absolutely loved it; it’s one of those once-in-alifetime things to do and something I would recommend to anyone. Just to drive such amazing cars in an environment like that was just amazing,” said Luff.

“Knowing the 991 GT3 Cup car so well, to experience it on snow and ice was so much fun and, with the studded tyres, it had so much more grip than I ever could have imagined. It hooked up and drove out of the corners really well. It was a real eye-opener to drive that car in that environment.

“For me, the whole experience rates up there as one of the best things I’ve ever been able to do in terms of driving experiences. To be able to get that as a prize was incredible. It certainly beats a trophy and a pat on the back.”

The focus now shifts to the 2015 Porsche Carrera Cup Australia season, which begins at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide on February 26-March 01, 2015.

Changes to Motorsport rules for 2015 For a number of years there have been ongoing issues with the classing of vehicles for our motorsport championship and subsequent allocation of points. The current system has become somewhat outdated due to changes in technology and advancements in measuring equipment and as with all rules that have been around a while changes for various reason have been made that are probably now no longer relevant. The aim of any motorsport competition should be to have the best driver from any class able to win not necessarily the fastest and newest car.

Also we want to provide an opportunity for those in the club who just want to come and enjoy their car on a race track without the pressure that a competition brings to be able to do so as after all we are first and foremost a car club.

To this end the Motorsport Committee has developed changes to the rules based on the NSW system of Benchmark times and mandatory dynamometer testing of entrant’s vehicles and provide an incentive to enter the competition by way of a substantial prize.

The package of changes are as follows, full details of the changes are on the club website under motorsport rules.

1. A prize of a set of tyres of the overall champion’s choice will be provided to the value of $2000.00

2. Entry to the competition is optional on line entry form, you can enter the competition any time up to round 5 however after that insufficient points would be generated to achieve a win.

Opting out of the competition means that your times will be recorded and published but no points will be awarded. All vehicle requirements remain the same.

3. As the primary method of classing remains power to weight all entrants vehicles must be tested on a Hub Dynamometer by the third round of the championship. Initially the present honesty system will be used on entry forms, and changes will be made to classing following the dyno test if necessary.

There are two machines available in Brisbane and cost is around $140.00 per car for two wheel drives and $180.00 per car for four wheel drives. The club is currently discussing providing some assistance for this and you will receive a report that will show if your vehicle is not performing as it should.

We will be arranging a couple of «Dyno» days in the near future for up to eight cars at a time and further advice will be issued on this.

The parameters for the Dyno will be provided by the club and the horsepower measurement to be used will be «uncorrected horsepower».

The flywheel conversion figures used will be those used previously by the club in 2009 / 10 as our advice is that these are more accurate than those used later.

We have found that there can be large variations in the results between different types of dynos up to 30% in some cases depending on the data input and the ability to control the car on the dyno and other variables so a consistent needs to be applied. It was also evident from the recent 2014 points review that there are variations in the output of unmodified cars, and that age and wear must be taken into account.

4. A «Benchmarking» system of points allocation will be applied as a trial, this is based on the Porsche Club of NSW experience which has proved successful, Benchmarks are set for each class and track based on club lap records and computer generated data that has proved to be very accurate, full details of this system are on the club website The Porsche Club in NSW have offered their assistance if needed with the implementation of the new system.

5. We wish to encourage new entrants to our motorsport events and to facilitate this we are adding a «New entrants run Group» which will be for those who want to come out have a look and drive at their own pace on the track, all requirements for vehicles such as fire extinguishers and clothing as per the current requirements will remain the same, again these can be viewed on the club website.

To facilitate the opportunity for those requiring training to be able to do so on a track day we have organized three joint track days this year with Paul Stokel and «driving events» at Queensland Raceway on Saturdays, these events are on the events calendar. Paul will run his usual track experience and training days in the morning so that those wanting to get training can do so, the club sprints will the take place in the afternoon.

6. Also to encourage those who just want to experience their car on a track all new members will receive a complimentary «Track experience» if they wish to which will enable them to come to a track day and take their car onto the track at the end of the days competition or in the new entrants run group. The only requirement will be a fire extinguisher and clothing as per the standard club requirements.

We will also be working closely with the Social committee to provide «happy laps at some events this year.

Last year we were able to provide a safe environment with plenty of track time for members at a reasonable cost, this year we will be building on this with a return to weekend events with training and two visits to Morgan Park which is popular with members.

The Motorsport committee encourages feedback on the new rules so that fine tuning if needed can be undertaken.

Tell us about your family:

I have two beautiful children, both car mad! My eldest Alexandra is 15 and she has just begun Grade 11. She cannot wait to get her L’s later this year and has already read “How to Drive”

I also have two crazy whippets, who make me laugh and smile every day.

What was the first car you owned?:

The first car I ever owned was a bronze Holden Camira. I was 17 and my boyfriend drove one too. That’s my excuse and I am sticking to it! It only lasted a few months and I upgraded to red Renault Fuego.

What do you drive now?:

I alternate between a current model BMW 328i M sport in Estoril Blue and the 981 Cayman, depending on who has to ferry kids that day.

I have a business/marketing background and I am currently working in two vastly different roles. I consult to an IT company in a project coordination role. The rest of the time I work for Hofstays a manufacturing jeweller in the Brisbane Arcade. It is a small family business and I absolutely love it. Although I must admit I feel my talent lies in buying diamonds rather than selling them.

Favourite food:

Most things I do revolve around my next meal. I have been Gluten Free for more than 20 years, so as boring as it sounds a home made GF meat pie is heaven after my pastry deprived years.

Favourite restaurant in Brisbane: Stokehouse at Southbank. The view, food and service are excellent.

Bathurst Motor Festival 2015 The Bathurst Motor Festival is on again in 2015 and Porsche Club NSW have been invited to run a category once again. The event will be held over 3 days during the Easter weekend in 2015, the dates being Friday April 3rd through to Sunday April 5th.

And we would love to welcome some more of our interstate friends to join us again this year for an opportunity to experience one of the world’s great circuits.

Please feel free to forward this email onto your members. Places are limited as we have offered slots to the 2014 participants first and the take-up was high.

Other states have received this information simultaneously, so time is of the essence.

Our Category Our Category will be run as an exclusively Porsche Marque Regularity event just like in 2014, and will be run under a CAMS licence and in accordance with the CAMS Regulations for Modern Regularity.

We will also be imposing some of our own additional regulations for the safe running of the category. For example, we will require that competitors have reasonable experience on a race track in order to compete – a minimum of 3 CAMS Sanctioned Supersprint days in the past 2 years.

Under specific CAMS regulations for the Mt Panorama Circuit, there is currently a minimum lap time (fastest accepted) of no faster than 2:40. This time limit is outside our control and is enforced by the organisers, so take it into consideration when making your decision to enter. From experience, a well driven road going GT3 on slicks is likely to go under this time, and a GT3 Cup car is almost certain to go under the time. The CAMS guidelines also stipulate that the slowest car should be no more than 130% of the fastest nominated time - which means 3:28 is the slowest any car can run. It's pretty clear that in the interests of safety, we do not want gross variations in the potential speeds and lap times. Use the 2014 event times published on www.natsoft.com.au as a guideline for your car type.

Our Category will be open to members of all Porsche Clubs in Australia - we will however be monitoring entries to ensure that they are fairly distributed across the clubs. We are intending to have each state compete for an interclub trophy at the event.

There is a track limit of 55 cars for the grid. Once the Category is fully subscribed, we will me maintaining a Reserves list on a first come basis.

Participants from the 2014 event have already received an advance opportunity to register - however we have now opened up the remaining slots to anyone in an Australian Porsche Club.

Following from the success of last years format, we have negotiated to maintain the length of the runs and you will get 5 x 20 minute runs over the weekend, consisting of 1 x practice (Friday), 4 Regularity runs (2 x Saturday & 2 x Sunday).

Bookings – Holding Deposit Bookings to reserve your place are on a first come basis. Initial offers are to those who participated in 2014.

The total cost will be approximately $1,250 per entry with a deposit of $650 required to hold your spot. Final costs will be known closer to the event. This is a small increase over 2014, BUT does include a $50 fuel voucher from Racefuels for use at the event.

This booking is for the holding deposit payment. You will be contacted via the email address you provide at a later date for the balance of the entry fee – most likely in late January/early February when we will have a better idea of final entry fee.

As some background, PCNSW does not seek to make any profit from this event. We simply take the organisers charges, add a small overhead for an admin tent and ancillary costs and divide this by the size of the field. Individual members can book garages should they require, but these are also handled as pass through costs. We are required by the BMF organisers to commit to the final numbers and pay all entry fees to the organisers well in advance of the event. We are seeking to have some Sponsorship to cover the costs of a Shirt and standardised signage/numbering for the cars (to give a more consistent and professional appearance), so if anyone is able to assist in this matter it would be a great help.

Therefore, there are some simple rules regarding bookings:



Bookings are not transferable - they must be made by the person who intends to participate at the event. If you are unable to attend, let us know and your place will be offered to the next person on the reserve list. This is the fairest way of handing a reserves list.

We will do our best to refund money should you not be able to attend. We do understand that circumstances change – so if you book and then discover you cannot attend, contact us ASAP. Once final payments have been made (Jan/Feb) we will only refund the entry fees if a replacement is found. This is because we will have already paid the organisers.

Since this is a Porsche Marque event, only enter cars of Porsche make and model.

Initial bookings are only being accepted from 2014 Participants for the first few days – so don’t send this email to all your club mates. Note that it says Participants – if they booked last year and withdrew, then they will have to wait for the general offer.

Only one driver per car - it's a regularity, so all 55 cars go out on the circuit at the same time.

The Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring is being held in Dunedin, New Zealand from the 15th – 24th January 2016.

Dunedin is a beautiful historic city with many attractions, and Otago has many scenic roads which are well suited to historic motoring, and if you have always wanted to visit New Zealand then what better time than now!

This event will be the 10th International Rally held by the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand Inc. The festival has evolved over the years and there are now significant numbers of vintage motorcycles involved. My name is Justin Clarke I live 15 min north of Toowoomba, my wife, Sonja and I have 5 children the oldest Patrick has just finished year 12, Ben 15 years, Hugh12, James 9 and Emily 7 years.

I have always had a strong interest in cars, boats and have restored quite a few over the last 30 years including more recently a 1955 chev wagon, 1950 chev ute, 1970 2800 BMW, 1962 Caribbean speed, Noelex sailing boat, currently restoring an Torana hatchback A9X (copy).

I have always liked Porsche cars, after years of research I purchase a 2007 White Porsche Cayman, it is in excellent condition, everything I have ever read and heard about Porsche cars is true, it does everything very well and is pure enjoyment to drive, The Cayman really just gets used for trips on windy roads and track days so far I have done one day at Willowbank and Lakeside, later this month I am going to Wakefield Park near Goulbourn NSW. For work I have owned and run my own business JPC Engineering for the past 26 years, we do mechanical design and drafting for a wide range of industries, having carried out projects for Boeing on the F111, Aluminium smelters in Australia and Oman, Mining and power generation projects throughout Australia and Africa, Truck and Motor home design and various Agricultural design project. It is always very interesting and rewarding work.

I am looking forward to getting involved in the various track days and social events.

In fact you will most likely find me driving the road to Mount Glorious on a regular basis. Not long after taking ownership my partner Tanya and I did a road trip to Bellingen in NSW but instead of taking the major highways we mapped out a course following all the interesting twisty back roads - the crackle of the sports exhaust coupled with the throttle blip from the sports chrono sounds fantastic and is very addictive. I have owned many sports cars and with my job as a car buyer and valuer for over 25years and with that I’ve had the opportunity to drive and own hundreds of unique and classic cars. My passion for cars started early as my father was a mechanical engineer and working on cars from a early age it was a natural progression for me to want to extend my passion to work.

Two years ago I was lucky to have found a matching numbers 911SC Manual Coupe which I have been looking for for over 5 years. It’s a crazy Casablanca Beige (like a caramel gold) with contrasting beige Pascha (checkerboard) trim.

It’s a factory RHD with factory fitted 16” Fuchs, front and rear spoilers, driving lights and bilstein shocks/dampers. Over the past 2 years I’ve been working on restoring the car a little at a time so it’s not off the road for great lengths of time.

I’m originally from Melbourne and have been in Brisbane for the last 5 years.

I really love the friendly people and great weather, and great roads and great places you can get to within a hour of the city, so I’m looking forward to drive my car with other porsche enthusiasts

Hi, I am Trent Humphries. I am a farther of two (Alexandra and Christian) and husband to Romy (don’t forget to buy your T shirts).

We are a family of car lunatics (22 in 18 yrs of marriage and I consider depreciation to be a swear word!).

I work for Jacobs which is a very large Engineering firm. I am an Aeronautical engineer by degree so I love the movement of shapes through the air. My family and I live in Bridgeman Downs which gives us easy access to the fantastic roads to the Nth West of Brisbane and all the fun that they offer. We are the very happy owners of a 2014, Carrera White, 981 Cayman which is my daily driver and never fails to put a smile on my face regardless of the days activities.
