Items for promoting healthy oral health! Hill’s makes two dental diets. One is Science Diet Oral Care, marketed through pet stores. The other, Prescription Diet TD, is sold by veterinarians. The large biscuit-like chunks of Oral Care and TD have a fibrous matrix that holds the food together while it’s being chewed, which mimics the cleaning action of a natural diet. Although the products are similar, TD chunks are larger, making them a little more effective. All Iam’s and Eukanuba adult dog and cat foods contain an additive that increases the friction of chewing, which results in about forty percent less tartar formation.

Hextra chews (best chew treat for most dogs) Hextra chews are a newer product from the company that makes CET chews. Instead of blocking tartar formation with enzymes, which is very helpful, Hextra controls mouth bacteria (and bad breath) with chlorhexidine, an antibacterial. Drinking water additives (highly recommended) Aquadent is a drinking water additive that controls plaque and tartar formation by reducing the bacterial population in your pet’s mouth. Plaque, that soft gooey stuff that forms on teeth, is mostly bacteria. It’s bacterial action that turns plaque into tartar and tartar that wedges itself up under your pet’s gums and makes the teeth fall out. Aquadent also helps prevent tooth decay, an important concern in many cats. In a recent feline study Aquadent reduced plaque and tartar formation by more than 50%. That’s huge, especially for a product so easy to use. Another study, this one in dogs, showed equally remarkable results. “In studies involving a total of 28 mixed breed dogs, all cases showed marked reduction in the bleeding index, gingival health showed remarkable improvement, and

New annual awards effective calendar year 2010 – • “Unsung Hero Award”: Current members of ABC and members of member clubs submit names of people or Boxers who have contributed in an extraordinary way such as those who volunteer and work tirelessly in Boxer rescue, or countless other ways. An example of a Boxer who would be eligible for the Unsung Hero Award would be a Search and Rescue Boxer, such as the one who worked at Ground Zero after 9/11, or a certified Therapy Dog who adds so much joy to peoples’ lives. Submissions would have to be in the hands of the Annual Awards Chair no later than January 1st each year starting in 2011 for the first award for 2010. The Annual Awards Chair would then share the submissions with the current Restructuring Committee members and determine the winner/winners. • “Top Producing Dog & Top Producing Bitch”: This award would be given to a Sire or Dam of Merit who has also produced titled performance get in any AKC recognized venue (Agility, Obedience, Rally, Tracking, etc.). Again, as with the Unsung Hero Award, the ABC Awards Chair and the current members of this committee would determine the recipients each year. Breeder Recognition on Annual Awards effective calendar year 2010 All Annual Awards will be inscribed with not just the current owners, but the breeders. Further, it was approved that all ABC members or members of member clubs owners and breeders listed on the award be given copies of the award paid for by ABC. The current practice is for the first owner to get the “paid for by ABC” award and any other owners have to pay for an additional copy. No award is offered to the breeders. Effective with the 2010 awards, all listed owners and breeders will be given copies of the award at no extra charge.

The Breeder Bookshelf

Review of: The X Factor, What It Is and How to Get It by Marianne Haun Liz Sullivan

The sub-title of this book reads “The relationship between inherited heart size and racing performance.” It was copyrighted in 1997 and published by the Russell Meerdink Company, Ltd., 1555 South Park Ave, Neenah, WI 54956, (414) 725-0955. This book basically relates the experience of the author’s (a well known writer on Thoroughbred horses) pedigree research in looking for a possible genetic factor that caused some of the greatest race horses to be so successful. “About the Author: A member of the National Turf Writers Association, Marianna Haun has covered the racing industry for [sic] a number of years, first as a staff writer for the Thoroughbred Times for two years, and [sic] later as a free-lance writer for the Associated Press for [sic] two years, while working on The X Factor project and book. Haun has a long association with Secretariat. Like many people, she cried as she watched him win the Belmont on television in 1973. She later photographed him in 1987 and was on the farm the day he died in 1989. Her first story, ‘Great Heart,’ which appeared in the Thoroughbred Times in April 1993, led to the quest to understand the meaning of Secretariat’s enormous heart. Nearly a year later, after months of intense pedigree research, she discovered a genetic link from Secretariat’s mighty heart to Eclipse’s great heart through the mare Pocahontas on the X chromosome trail. This link is called the X Factor. This was the discovery that led to the ongoing research to prove the sexlinkage of the characteristic and to find a genetic marker.” At this point, you may be wondering why I would recommend such a book to Boxer breeders. There are a couple of reasons why I think it can help serious breeders better understand genetics and breed better dogs. First of all, understanding as much as we are able about genetics does help us make better decisions in our quest to do a better job as breeders—and concurrent with that, I have found that reading on breeding theories espoused by successful breeders of other species can help our overall understanding. That is one reason I also recommended a book written about the attempt to save heritage livestock breeds in a recent Breeder’s Bookshelf column. Just as very successful dog show judges have often recommended studying many different breeds in order to develop your “eye for a dog,” which will help you evaluate specimens in your own breed, studying successful breeders of other species can also help us better understand what is actually happening when we choose to mate a particular bitch to a particular stud dog. Secondly, even though this book is about Thoroughbred horses, it shows

What Happens…When You Die? There’s a question that none of us really wants to think about. We never do but it will happen to each of us. Stop and think how much of a difference your Boxers have made in your life. Think of the goofy looks, the laughter, the unconditional love and pride we have had in each of them. Most of us have had them in our lives for many years and wouldn’t give any of those years up. But, how many of us have remembered our beloved Boxers in our Wills? These wonderful dogs that are a part of our lives and our families…what happens when we die? Is someone else going to care as much about the future of this breed as you do? Will they support the Foundation the way that you do? What will happen when you are no longer here to provide support for the wellbeing of the breed that has given you so much during your lifetime? What will happen to the items you MEANT to leave to the Foundation but just haven’t gotten around to? This is a case where “size doesn’t matter!” You don’t have to be rich to leave something to the Endowment. You may simply want to leave your memorabilia. It’s always so sad to hear that someone who has always loved their Boxers has died and their family put all of their Boxer treasures on eBay or gave it to Goodwill. Let’s face it--in many cases, our families are not as enamored with our collections as we are. Let’s be sure that they count for our Boxers. By mentioning the ABCF Boxer Legacy Fund in your Will, you will be assured that when you die, something will go to the Fund to provide health research funding for our Boxers in perpetuity. Any amount left to the Fund will be placed in the Endowment and the corpus will never be spent. Only a portion of the income will ever be spent, thereby ensuring perpetuity of the support for our beloved breed. And remember, when the Foundation funds research grants, the AKC Canine Health Foundation matches that money. What a wonderful legacy to leave for our Boxers. Some may want to leave cash, a percentage of their estate, a retirement fund, life insurance or stock to the Fund. Any of these are wonderful ways to keep giving to the breed that has given us their all. It’s very simple to make provisions in your Will for the Foundation. You just need to be sure that your attorney has the following information. Some who have already made provisions in their Wills for the Boxer Legacy Fund are: Joyce Baker Brown, Susan Bell, John Connolly, Sharon Fosseen, Wendy Morawski, Audrey Schnell, Dr. and Mrs. William Truesdale, Estate of Dr.Wendy Wallner If you have mentioned the American Boxer Charitable Foundation Endowment in your Will, please let me know so I can add your name to this list. how to do effective pedigree research—which every breeder, regardless of what species they are working with, needs to know. But more importantly, this book is very readable and clearly shows the genetic trail followed to find this exciting discovery inThoroughbred horses. It includes numerous photographs of great race horses that were found to have carried the “great-heart” gene. But how can that help us as Boxer breeders--aside from increasing our overall knowledge of genetics? It can do so because it appears that not only was there a true genetic component to this enlarged and more powerful heart which allowed many of the most famous race horses to succeed, but that there was also a strong similarity of conformation connected to this factor. Now obviously, race horses have *quantifiable performances* which is not true of Boxers in the breed ring, because breed judging-by its very nature-is the subjective opinion of the judge. However, since there appeared to be a “connected” specific type of conformation— which actually helped researchers identify and genetic test for the gene marker for this “super heart” in Thoroughbreds—I feel we can look at the conformation of our most successful dogs and theorize that we may also find there is a connection, passed down in the bitch lines, which indicates there is also what I call a “Super X” gene in the Boxer breed. Allow me to quote a passage from The X Factor which mentions this intriguing aspect of the research done for this book. “One of the most important things we have learned is the importance of the dam in producing an outstanding racehorse. While following the large heart along the heart lines in the pedigrees of the horses measured, going from sire to dam to daughter and son, it appeared there might be something else happening along the X chromosome. In many cases there seemed to be a body type that passed from sire to daughter to son. The outstanding broodmare sire, Princequillo, gave certain physical characteristics, besides a large heart, to his daughters. In comparing conformation pictures of Princequillo with daughters of Somethingroyal and Key Bridge, there is an amazing similarity. Besides the overall conformation likeness, there are certain physical characteristics that show up as well, including unusually small ears and a flat broad face at the top of the skull, that is eerily reflected in daughters of Moscow Ballet and in himself, a maternal grandson of a Princequillo daughter, Milan Mill.

They are the same physical characteristics found in Secretariat. When Penny Chenery, owner of Secretariat saw the picture of The Last Red, a twin daughter of Moscow Ballet, which is being used in a breeding experiment for the project because of her large heart, she said, ‘Why those are Secretariat’s ears!’ Following her recognition of certain physical characteristics in the twin filly, a photographic comparison was made and those small ears and wide flat forehead, along with sloping shoulders and chest and neck similarities were found to go back to Princequillo and Weekend Surprise, the similarity, especially in the front half of the two horses is very striking. Genetic studies at Cornell University have now found that in the forming of the horse, theY chromosome is responsible for the uterine environment and the X chromosome is responsible for the forming of the body of the individual.” Ms. Haun goes on with numerous examples from other species (including human beings) which show similar traits are manifested in other species. This leads me to believe that the same thing happens in dogs—and this may give us an important tool in our attempts to breed better dogs. I truly feel many breeders will find this interesting and very readable book helpful in their quest to become better breeders.

Chattanooga TN (AP) A pit bull mix in Tennessee has been sentenced to obedience training after his dogged attack on a local police car. Winston didn’t bite anybody, but he mauled a Chattanooga police car in what might have been a confused attempt to take a bite out of crime. The persistent pooch managed to tear off a section of the front bumper and damage the tires. The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports that a judge ruled that Winston had been a very bad dog. He was sentenced to obedience and canine good citizen classes, and he’ll have to wear a tag that says he is “potentially dangerous.” Northolt, UK (SKY) — A week-old cocker spaniel was the subject of an emergency rescue after being accidentally flushed down his owner’s toilet. The tiny pooch was trapped in a waste pipe for almost four hours after four-year-old Daniel Blair decided he “needed a wash” in the loo and pulled the chain. Frantic attempts to find the flushed puppy began, but all efforts by the fire brigade and the RSPCA at the house in Northolt, Middlesex, failed. The ‘plumb’ job landed to drain experts Dyno-Rod, who used specialist camera gear to locate the crying pet in a pipe 20 yards away from the Blairs’ home.

Neighbours were warned not to flush their toilets to prevent him from being pushed into the main sewer and an engineer from the firm was called. Will Craig, 22, from Harrow in Middlesex, said he was initially reluctant to nudge the pup towards a manhole cover, “because I was scared of hurting (him)”. “But the RSPCA said I was his only hope,” he told the Daily Mirror. “Eventually I pushed him far enough for the firemen to grab.” Cheering broke out as the pet was plucked out of the manhole to complete the rescue. The young dog is recovering well after his draining experience and has been named Dyno in tribute to his rescuers. Distraught Daniel said he was “so, so sorry” about flushing Dyno down the toilet, vowing: “ I won’t do it again”. NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A Poquoson man who said he fell after stepping in dog feces at a PetSmart store has filed a $1 million negligence lawsuit against the company. Robert Holloway alleges in his lawsuit in U.S. District Court that he badly injured his back, struck his head and knocked out four teeth when he slipped in January 2009 at a Newport News PetSmart. He alleges that PetSmart and its manager should have protected him from a hazardous condition created when they allowed animals to defecate on

the floor. In court documents, Phoenixbased PetSmart denied the negligence allegations. COLUMBIA, S.C. -- If you’re a dog lover, you’ll understand why Elizabeth Todd cradles her chihuahua “Poppy” like a baby. “Poppy’s just my heart,” said Todd. “They become part of your family, part of your life.” “It tore my heart out to think something had happened to him.” Her 9-year-old son Tim remembers hearing something awful on Monday. “It was a terrible yelp,” said Tim. “Real loud and we heard wings flapping and we looked back and Poppy was flying right up there.” Some kind of large bird had picked up the 3-pound chihuahua. “It kind of looked like he was in both of his talons and the bird was flying up and he was looking down and whining,” said Tim. The family spent hours searching the nearby streets and neighborhoods for Poppy, but they couldn’t find him. That made it hard to get to sleep. “When I went to sleep, I lost a little hope,” said Tim. After a night of tossing and turning, relief showed up right at the front door as Todd’s dad was leaving for work. It was Poppy, running to Todd’s arms. THE BOXER RING

The Boxer Event 2010 Tim Hutchings

The Boxer Event is the most significant occasion on the UK Boxer calendar, taking place on the weekend before Crufts. Three of the premier breed clubs work together to stage the day which consists of the Mancunian Boxer Club’s National Puppy of the Year (in its ninth year); the Cotswold Boxer Club’s National Dog of the Year (in its 25th year) and the British Boxer Club’s “Boscars” awards dinner which has been going since the 1980s. Originally all these events were held separately but 10 years ago the three Clubs decided to work together on one special annual event. The formula works and each year we get rave reviews. The competitions kick off proceedings at 1.30pm and with the gala dinner in the evening everything runs through until the early hours of the following morning when the last revellers leave. Around 200 Boxer enthusiasts attend each year and we always welcome a good number of foreign visitors as well as guests from other breeds. Keeping us on track, the Master of Ceremonies is always the well known international all-rounder Andrew Brace, a very good friend to the Boxer breed.

At the Boscars awards dinner it was a clean sweep for three kennels. Winuwuk won Champion of Champions, Top Boxer and Sire of Merit; Walkon were Dam of Merit and Top Puppy and Berwynfa were Top Kennel and Top Breeders. Every other year there are voting awards at the dinner as well, but this was our year off so it was quickly onto the disco so the assembled

Ginny Shames was the last American to judge in the same year that she went on to win the American version of the contest with Sedona. This year the Pup of the Year was judged by Clare Coxall, a well known English all-rounder who is a legend in the Poodle world. She is the only person to have had the distinction of winning Best in Show at Crufts with a Miniature Poodle (in the 1950s), breeding a Standard who went BIS (in the 1980s) and then judging the top award herself in 2008. We all love Clare! Her winner was Yvonne Miller’s Walkon Atomic Rooster.

The reputation of the Boxer Event grows by the year and 2011 promises to be particularly special as its 10th anniversary. 6 March 2011 is the date, so if you fancy a trip taking in both the Boxer Event and Crufts a few days later then it’s time to start planning.

PUREBRED DOGS -The Master Race? Chandra Johnson The Boxer Ring Reporter

I

n 2006, breeder Carole Wilson’s mahogany St. Bernard, Ace, was voted the best example of his breed in the United States. It was a great victory — one that took Wilson 42 years of breeding to achieve. “It takes generations to do that and identify problems and overcome them,” Wilson said. “Breeding and showing has been great. We did it as a family and my daughter still shows dogs.” It used to be that the standards of her breed were all Wilson worried about when showing her dogs, but for the past seven or eight years, Wilson says her attention at dog shows has been divided because she worries more than ever about her dog’s safety. “It makes me angry. It amazes me how these people just don’t think,” Wilson said. “Why should they be the ones to decide what dogs we have? What they don’t realize is, if we don’t breed dogs, there won’t be any. Some of these people are nuts.”

That’s because more and more, animal rights groups like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have taken to protesting at dog shows on the grounds that purebred dogs amount to the equivalent of “master race” philosophies among purebred owners and breeders. Worse than that — many activists are going to violent extremes to get their points across. Wilson — who is the president of the Belleville, Illinois Kennel Club — was present at a show March 7th when a pink substance believed to be antifreeze was found in a show dog’s dish. Owners were instructed to be on watch. “These people are absolutely terrorists,” Wilson said of the potential poisoning. “We knew to be on watch from the beginning, though, when someone said they saw a truck with PETA bumper stickers outside. They’re sick and we have to fight them by continuing what we’re doing.”

the pure bloodlines. Labrador Retrievers, one of the most popular breeds, suffer from hip dysplasia and cataracts,” Fort said. “Discriminating against a dog that isn’t of ‘pure’ blood is related to what the KKK stands for. There are millions of mixed-breed dogs that die in shelters every year because they couldn’t find suitable homes.” While Fort extolled the virtues of keeping shelter dogs alive, records released March 8th by the Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) indicated that PETA killed more animals than it saved in 2007 — exterminating 97 percent of the animals in its care. David Frei, director of communications at Westminster, says activists like those who work for PETA are completely misguided.

“I can’t imagine why anyone would feel that way. It’s not an elite definition, it’s about finding the right dog for your lifestyle,” Frei said. “With our dog show, we educate people about responsible pet ownership of any dog.” Until groups like PETA stop their war against the breeding and show industries, Wilson says, the best thing pet enthusiasts can do is keep breeding responsibly and never stop showing. “You have to be more careful now, but it’s worth it,” Wilson said. “I’ll never stop showing and breeding because of it.”

Chandra Johnson is a full-time newspaper reporter based in New Mexico. She has covered animal issues for various publications over the years.

“more studies are showing that mixed breed dogs and purebred dogs have similar problems,” At another recent show in Franklin, Tennessee, protestors were believed to have planted broken glass in the center ring where dogs were shown, though the Nashville Kennel Club’s website says it was never confirmed that protesters were responsible. Nevertheless, law enforcement intervened to ensure the safety of the animals. While PETA spokeswoman, Virginia Fort, said that PETA “absolutely does not” condone the sort of attempted violence at the Franklin and Belleville shows, she would not comment on the PETA disruption of the Westminster Dog Show in February — though PETA’s website claims responsibility. At Westminster, PETA demonstrators stood outside the Madison Square Garden distributing their literature — dressed as KKK members. Some PETA demonstrators also worked their way onto the show floor carrying signs that read, “Breeders Kill Shelter Dogs’ Chances.” Fort, who says she attended the Westminster protest, said that PETA objects to professional pure breeding on the grounds that it is not in the best interests of dogs. “It’s proven that pure bred dogs have health problems bred into them along with

“These people are completely uneducated about breeding and showing. Pure breeding isn’t elitist. And more studies are showing that mixed breed dogs and purebred dogs have similar problems,” Frei said. “The thing about purebred dogs is their predictability. If you get a certain dog, you can expect certain things because of pedigree. It’s not to say mixed breeds are bad, they’re just less predictable.” Both Frei, who bred Afghan Hounds for more than 30 years, and Wilson agree that a purebred preference does not mean a mixed breed prejudice. “Westminster runs a mutt show and we’ve supported the ASPCA for years. Our first show ever in 1877 went to build the animal hospital here in New York City, so we’ve always supported all dogs,” Frei said. “Again, it’s predictability. If a dog grows up and you’re surprised, that’s a dog that’s more likely to wind up in a shelter. You’re more likely to know what you’ll get with a purebred.” In the wake of the Westminster disruption, the New York Times posted on its blog — Room For Debate— (http://roomfordebate. blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/17/feelingguilty-about-your-purebred-dog/) that many dog owners were feeling “guilty” for owning purebred dogs. Frei says that mindset is silly. THE BOXER RING

What is DPI and why we can’t use the photos from your web page? DPI stands for dots per inch, which indicates the resolution of images. A dot is a single point, the smallest identifiable part of an image. Printers and monitors for example, create characters and images by printing patterns of dots. The more dots per inch, the higher the resolution. The industry standard for photos in print advertising is 300 dots per inch. At this resolution the dots in the photos are just small enough that they are barely detectable with the naked eye. Industry Standard for the web is from 72 to 90 dots per inch. In print

at this resolution, the dots are clearly visible. In this case the image is said to be pixelated. Pixelated, describes an image in which individual pixels are apparent to the naked eye. When you “do the math” it becomes clear that in images with 300 dots per square inch, the dots will be smaller and more condensed than imagines with 72 dots per inch. These smaller more compact dots give us an image with more “information” per inch. We then come to the answer of why we cannot pull photos from your web site.

Boxer photo at 300 dpi

Boxer photo at 72 dpi

Compare the photos. The high resolution, 300 dpi. photo gives us more detail and clarity. Whereas the 72 dpi photo lacks quality and is pixelated. The quality of your advertisements and the articles we bring to you is very important to us. We want you to be happy with the product we deliver to your mailbox. At times, it may seem that we are “difficult” when it comes to image quality, but the reality is that we are very picky for a reason – YOU!
