Ron Brown Scholar Program Brochure

The Ron Brown Scholar Program was established in 1996 by Anthony M. Pilaro to honor the late Secretary of Commerce Ronald H. Brown’s legacy of service through a selective scholarship and leadership program for college-bound African Americans.

The Program has grown to include three interconnected initiatives: • The signature Ron Brown scholarship, • The Ron Brown Leaders Network, a career development program, and • The Guided Pathway Support Program (GPS), our college access initiative.

All three initiatives advance the Ron Brown Scholar Program’s vision to cultivate the next generation of transformational leaders who positively impact their communities and blaze new paths in their chosen careers and professions.

OU R SI GNA T UR E N A T I O N A L S C HO L A R S HI P » E S T . 1 9 9 6 A national scholarship for low-income African American high school seniors of outstanding promise who excel academically, show exceptional leadership skills and make an impact on their communities through service to others.

Ron Brown Scholars are awarded a $40,000 academic scholarship and are provided mentoring and guidance, leadership experiences and service opportunities.

Since 1997, 440 students have been named Ron Brown Scholars.

In 2018–19, you’ll find 100 Scholar undergraduates at colleges and universities across the country and 340 Scholar alumni impacting their communities throughout the world.

Ron Brown Scholars have a college graduation rate of 99% All Americans: 54%, African Americans: 42%

Our partners provide a trusted source of job and internship opportunities for Scholars and Captains, facilitated through networking and recruiting activities, including an annual conference.

Ron Brown Captains Each year around 5,000 African American high school students compete for the prestigious Ron Brown scholarship. Twenty or more are named Ron Brown Scholars.

The remaining top five percent of applicants are named Ron Brown Captains and have full access to the professional development services offered through the Leaders Network.

With its high-tech and high-touch mentorship approach, the Guided Pathway Support Program (GPS) connects students to the information and inspiration they need to make college accessible through the GPS Workplace by Facebook platform.

GPS Mentors: Ron Brown Scholars + Captains GPS students connect to Ron Brown Scholars and Captains through the GPS Workplace by Facebook online college access community. Ron Brown Scholars and Captains are similar in racial identity, age, income and life experiences with the cultural competence to meaningfully engage GPS students. They have already successfully navigated journeys from hardship into America’s top colleges and universities, graduate schools, corporations and beyond.

OU R LIFELO N G NE T WO R K F O R S U P P O R T A N D S E R V I C E » E S T . 2001 The first class of Ron Brown Scholars established the Ron Brown Scholar Alumni Association (RBSAA) upon their graduation from college. Alumni participate in the RBSAA by staying connected with fellow alumni through national and regional events, mentoring other Scholars, supporting philanthropic and social causes and donating back to the Program.

Ronald H. Brown American Journey Awards Since 2010, Ronald H. Brown American Journey Awards have been granted to individuals who have developed opportunities for others to achieve success.

The ceremony is attended by philanthropists, business leaders, civic leaders, and professionals, and serves as the Program’s annual fundraising event.
