EDITOR’S NOTE

RØMP

It’s amusing how the word ‘old’, despite its somewhat nugatory connotation, still holds sway in our neoteric world. It’s as if it doesn’t want to be old, but au courant, fresh and timeless. The evolution of the cell phone is a classic example. 20 years ago, people were clutching gigantic blocks against their faces, and minimising the phone’s size was of paramount importance. Much later, the shrinking process went on overdrive. I remember seeing phones that come in the shape of a lipstick, and those that look emaciated because they’re so thin. The image of bulky phones belonging to yesteryears had finally been banished, but for how long? True enough, hitherto is the era for colossal phones again, but sleeker, and with more swag. When tablets could start making a phone call, you know it’s going to be big (pun intended) in due time. And we don’t call these gizmos smart for nothing. Essentially, ‘old’ reinvented itself, and our team at RØMP loves reinvention. Whether you’re stuck in a rut, or caught in an emotional abyss full of past, painful memories, reinvention allows you to move up and onwards. Reinvention can be found in fashion, food, music, love, arts, and basically, life. It’s not just the sidekick of hope, but also the wingman of joy.

“A coffee house gathers intelligent people, human beings that wish to come together to meet and socialize - all for the love of coffee,” enthuses Pavan. After living in Melbourne for almost 11 years, Pavan Khialini, the Singaporeborn, self-professed Melbournian, decided to embark on a journey back to our shores. He wanted to test the local café scene by introducing an Aussie-style abode, humbly sharing his coffee expertise after hearing of the deprivation of decent coffee in town. With that in mind, Sarnies was soon established.

“My mate Ben and I started the place. At that time we couldn’t find any decent sandwiches or coffee in the Central Business District and boy, were we right,” recalls Pavan. Melbournians have always been passionate coffee lovers, with quality cuppa sold in almost any nook and corner, sometimes sandwiched by vibrant art murals and, for a reasonable price too. The pride that goes into making coffee has become a trademark, and even nondescript, indie cafes have become highly frequented.

“Australians are a great bunch and I guess I have spent quite a length of time in Melbourne - to really appreciate their laidback way of life,” says Pavan. The easygoing and down-to-earth barista of six years, eagerly grabbed the opportunity when it came to open Sarnies. He had no inclination that it would take off so well and integrate seamlessly within the community. Both Pavan and Ben are also keen to ensure that the café grows not just in terms of being a joint with Aussie vibes, but to also develop its own unique identity and selling point. Although stowed quietly along Telok Ayer street, Sarnies has gradually evolved into a sociocultural melting pot - due to the constant streams of customers from different backgrounds and cultures.

“What started as a good food and beverage place has now escalated into an oasis of interesting people congregating here, all looking for Sarnies’ little taste of fun,” appreciates Pavan.

My lunch interview with Shu An played out like a fluid symphony at Olivia Cassivelaun Fancourt, a French restaurant spotting glorious colonial façade and ritzy interior. It was a frank exchange of questions and answers, lightly peppered by the occasional clanking of cutlery and glass. If you’d want to know, Shu An’s every part the gregarious girl you see on ClickNetwork’s Tried and Tested – the show that propelled her to make-up stardom. And you start to understand why, as the interview progresses, that she’s also a theatre patriot. Acting weaves through her like invisible veins and she is grateful for the opportunities afforded her thus far. Somehow, Shu An’s thoughtful answers pertaining to the stage – both theatre and life - trickles within me and had me reflect on mine. The FLY Entertainment artiste lives by her own set of rules, law-abiding of course, and they’re rules that speak purpose and give her the drive. And that purpose? To find a prancing inner unicorn that resides within each of us.

SOCIAL MEDIA gives the audience a voice – a sort of eloquence that hits you at the core of your soul.

SLOUCH

SLOUCH What have you been up to recently? I’m currently hosting an Okto show together with the Flying Dutchman called Young At Art, and I’m also involved with a local play called Machine, which is part of the Esplanade’s The Studios programme. Of course, there’s Tried and Tested on ClickNetwork which I hope would last forever, while I’m also considering uploading videos on my YouTube channel discussing issues about sex and love. It’s going to be informative and educational, and I think it’s important for people out there to know how to take care and protect themselves. It’s always better to start young and all the more so with the power of social media when it’s put to good use. Perhaps, it’s probably better if my channel’s range of topics is switched to a broader one, something that can allow me to share my journey on finding that elusive inner unicorn. Why unicorn? You think it’s there, but it’s not, and you continue to search for it that will impact your life. Tell us two to three things about yourself that nobody really knows. (thinks hard) I’m a hoarder and I find it hard to throw things away. Things give us memories, and I’d hate to let them go. I also have a secret ambition to become a… Kpop star! (laughs) Their styling, their look, it’s all so cohesive and extremely cool. Look at G-Dragon, he’s got so much swag. As for the last point, I’m a klutz. I tend to drop things all the time and I’m quite clumsy. Once, I walked into a light stand even though I knew it was there, so, there you go. When you’re away from the cameras, are you still the same ball of fun, joy and overflowing bubbliness? Pretty much! I’m always like that. Besides, acting is acting, and being me is me. share with us what are some of the challenges you’ve had to overcome in order to be where you are right now In the beginning, I actually didn’t want to host. It’s just not me and I was battling with insecurity and low self-confidence. It took some time for me to get used to hosting, to develop the confidence that’s required and to subsequently enjoy it. There’s also the case with being superficial. We’re all guilty of how we

Ø SLOUCH 18/72

look nowadays, but we cannot forget that you’re who you are. Learn to draw the line with superficiality, especially with larger market forces sometimes working against this mentality. Also, this industry is as unstable as it is challenging. You don’t know when your next job will arrive, or when the next script will be, and you’ll have to learn to accept something that you cannot do anything about. What have you learnt so far from being in the industry? I’ve learnt to dress better as compared to the past, when I didn’t put in effort to look good. Especially with Tried and Tested, it’s amazing how the idea to transform yourself with makeup and appropriate dressing can alter your appearance so drastically. There’s a realisation that the clothes you wear, coupled with the transformative power of your adornments, can instil that bit more confidence. Talking about Tried and Tested, what’s one thing you love about the show? I love that it’s being broadcast on a social media platform, where anyone can be anything. There are people who fear that social media will kill quality, but on the contrary, I think it gives the audience a voice – a sort of eloquence that hits you at the core of your soul. That is the power of social media, which encompasses truth and honesty. There’s a developing connection between what’s being shown and the audience, which basically, is like art. You’ve tried countless products on Tried & Tested. What’s the best thing so far and why? There’re too many to just pick one! If I must, I love the different brands of BB Cream, Dolly Wink’s faux eyelashes, and the countless D.I.Y nail tutorials. (beams) Are there any particular acting roles that you feel will take you to a higher acting level? I’d want to take on a strong female character, both emotionally and mentally. I wouldn’t mind playing a man, or even in an action flick (flings a punch). It’ll suit me since I have a martial arts background that includes taekwondo, kalaripayattu, and muay thai. How did your interest for performing and acting arise? I grew up watching Channel 8 dramas and got pretty hooked. For me, the interest grew even deeper after signing up for speech and drama classes, and I quite

enjoy the freedom afforded to performing, to be silly, and to have the license to express all these varied emotions. Besides, scripts gave me words that I never would be able to utter if left on my own. When I act out characters in extreme situations, I’m also questioning myself: what would I do if I were in a similar scenario? It jolts you into thinking what you really stand for, which is important as a human being. Who/what inspires and motivates you to do what you’ve been doing? Claire Wong and Huzir Sulaiman! They are married to each other and are also Joint Artistic Directors of Checkpoint Theatre. They are, put simply, very intelligent people, very talented, and have dedicated their lives to theatre work. Not only that, they continue to impart knowledge to the younger generation of theatre practitioners. A rest day entails… BBC Knowledge and documentaries, plus some ‘how to get out of a rut’ programmes involving Alex Polizzi or Gordon Ramsay! These shows are really empowering, the way they help people to move forward and improve, I get inspired by all these. What is one thing in your bag that you cannot leave HOME without. That would be my eyeliner. What would you do to help bring in fresh blood to the local theatre scene? I’d aim to have a successful career, which will in turn inspire youths to see a point in pursuing arts, to show them that arts isn’t only just a hobby, but something you can be dedicated to. When arts grow within a society, the people grow as well. ANY WORDS FOR aspiring youths who want to venture into theatre or performing in general? Have a good work ethic, be really thickskinned and be sure to never ever take criticisms or setbacks personally.

SLOUCH

This Banking and Finance undergraduate is progressively gaining recognition for his mellifluous vocals and dashing good looks. You may have seen him working at Abercrombie and Fitch, or even remember him for his sashaying catwalks as one of the finalists of CLEO’s 50 Most Eligible Bachelors back in 2011. In truth, Teo Seng Loong is putting his talents to effective use, and is now managed by Fly Entertainment. Modelling, singing and acting are all part of the 1.78m tall, diving enthusiast’s repertoire. Brains and brawn aside, watch out for his charm offensive once he gets into the swing of things.

What have you been up to lately? Exams have just finished for me, so I’m at the stage of exploring new things before I step into the next stage of life, such as computer programming. What is it about singing, acting and modelling that you love? I love to express my thoughts and emotions through music because music is universally understood. Acting and modelling also allow me to do something similar through storytelling and body language. Certain messages are rejected when they are presented in plain sight; the power of these medium is that they appeal directly to the subconscious of an individual - this is the ‘connection’ that is made. I think I enjoy making that connection. Any preference among the three? It would be singing and song-writing. What sparked your interest in being a performer? I remember having thoughts of becoming a singer since I was in primary school. I used to perform for school skits and musicals and I was in the choir then as well. Even up till today, I still cannot really decipher and illustrate the reasons that drove me to perform. All I know is that it gets me excited and that a good performance leaves me happy. Why did you choose the media industry over the banking and finance sector which you have an academic background in? Initially, I took a course in finance because I was solely driven by money. However, I came to realize that there was more to life through interactions with seniors and friends. I have always had this feeling that I was meant to do something great ever since I was young, I did not want to be ‘ordinary’. Besides, I was already doing something that I enjoyed. Were there any other career ambitions if you were not on the media or business tracks? I have had thoughts of being a professional trader, a computer programmer or a dive master. What causes you to really excel? One of the major beliefs that I have is in the ‘law of attraction’. It is basically a theory that says that one will be able to fulfil his dreams if he truly believes in it. This theory motivates and inspires me to do everything I can for anything I seek to do. To me, inspiration stems from one’s state of awareness. This means that anyone or anything can be an inspiration if we are able to observe without any reservations, we will definitely be able to see and learn much more. If there is something that you want people to remember you for, what would it be? I want to be remembered as someone who people could relate to and support them through their problems; someone who inspires them to be better people. Have you had any unwanted attention from over-zealous fans? If yes, what happened? When I was working at Abercrombie and Fitch, I was asked if I was offered muscle worship sessions. It was quite freaky.

INIMITABLE Luciano

One error we make in life is going through it like a hot knife through a slab of butter, without stopping to see the fine detail and beauty within the colours and shades of the ordinary and mundane. JOEY MURRAY guides us into Luciano Ventrone’s latest cache of extraordinary stilllives that are sure to leave an indelible impression. While taking a walk through Gillman Barrack’s large open spaces (surreal in our Singapore), you might spot some beautiful flowers, pomegranates and nude women in a gallery. Some stop to smell them, pressing their noses against the canvas (please don’t), and there - the smell of oil-paint and canvas. Yes, 76-year-old Mr. Ventrone’s Sui generi/s, flown in straight after a show in Casino dei Principo of Villa Torlonia in his hometown, Rome, features seascapes, flowerpots and baskets of fruits, nuts and flowers. Female nudes, back and profile portraits on neutral, black or grey backgrounds enliven the space. And his works’ claim to fame is their startling realness, despite being feverishly worked over in ‘18-hour work days in the studio’ and requiring the rarely used single-bristle 0.001 paintbrush for touch-ups and attributed to the paintings’ larger-than-lifeness. His devotion to intricate details were motivated by his fascination with making things more real than reality itself’. “The study of the painting is not the mere representation of the object but its colour and light: the true relationship between the two things that shape in space. The subject should not be seen as such, but abstractly,” advised the talented and sagacious painter to his students.

Born in Rome in 1942, Luciano’s colourful earlier life and childhood were what painted the portrait of this artist’s self. He was hosted by ‘the wealthy and especially loving’ Lady Metha Petersen in Denmark, at the tender age of six, who gave him a box of colours. Returning to Italy to do his primary studies, he moved on to the prestigious Art School of Rome, and graduated from the faculty of Architecture. But it wasn’t until his participation in the student riots of 1968 that he made the important decision to immerse himself in his art and painting. Says Luciano, “The brush is something I have never abandoned.”

Ø SLOUCH 22/72

SLOUCH

A personal favourite is his Meteorites 1, 2011, which features three Amalfi lemons stacked precariously in a layered agate bowl. Not only are we staring at lemons that aren’t your typical garden variety (literally, these are almost wild lemons), the twist and turns and crevises in the lemons resemble horns and how land is torn after an earthquake – and the juxtaposition of unconventional (in the form of the odd lemons) and the beautiful proves to be eyecatching and awe-inspiring. Fuga Dal Centro, a pomegranate that has been split open from the centre (and served with a sprig of its mother branch), tells tales of inner beauty in the form of the ‘death’ of the fruit being smattered, revealing ruby-red seeds, which survive the husk and the branch that delivered nutrition and life that developed fruit itself. Luciano broke from his professional facade, joking, “If you look at the seeds here, you will see something like a brain cell. If you ask me how long it took me to complete this, I will tell you, 50 years.”

And last of all, what makes Luciano’s work stand out and what gives it depth and the ‘photographic’ quality is the white paint he adds as a finishing touch to give ‘extra light’, which is not a ‘mere technique to add a tridimensional effect, but an attempt to reach that imperfection between light and shadows’. These elements take Ventrone’s paintings beyond the basic technicalities of art-making and only surpassed by the philosophy Plato. Is it any wonder that more than two-thirds of his Sui generi/s collection has been snapped up by admirers already? Luciano has now returned to a less hectic dayto-day schedule, putting an end to his 16 to 18-hour work days in his Rome studio, saying, “I am getting old. Now, I need to sleep like a baby in the afternoon”. Do catch his works before they are gone! Partners & Mucciaccia Gallery in Gillman Barracks will show from 1st March to 2nd July 2013.

“You can take a picture when painting, and paint when taking a picture,” is something he mentions when he describes his technique. He describes photography as the ‘starting point’, when the ‘subject becomes abstract’, coming to life through life. Then a subsequent pencil sketch guides ‘dark and light shadows, defines space between objects and gives proportions’. As the painter commences, ‘slow and careful chromatic research’ is the key, ‘adding colour and layers of paint that become more consistent with every brushstroke’, creating a type of penetration within a painting, leaving its physical reality to get into a metaphysical one.

SLOUCH Vanessa Emily is one of the chief wordsmiths at Wardrobe Trends Fashion (WTF), Singapore’s leading online fashion magazine. Besides her flair for writing, she’s also a psychology major at Raffles College of Higher education, and is already a prominent fashion stylist/blogger at various events. Mcken Wong chats with her about the overriding popularity of WTF (as of now, more than 100,000 Facebook fans), as well as her fashion sensibility.

You’re one of the chief wordsmiths at Wardrobe Trends Fashion (WTF), how does it feel to see it grow into what it is now?

Describe the essential traits of WTF.

How did you overcome initial difficulties when starting out?

With a strong focus on the relationship between fashion & lifestyle, WTF also known as WTFSG, is a luxury, lifestyle & fashion online magazine, featuring interviews with top models, celebrities and DJs. Not only do we showcase street photography and the latest fashion lookbooks, there’s also entertainment news and celebrity gossip. The website is the brain-child of Herbert Rafael, the founder and director of WTF, and a suite of other lifestyle publications under HS Media.

Ø SLOUCH 24/72

It’s a luxury to be able to do work that I enjoy and being part of all its peaks and pit falls makes the taste of success that much sweeter. Continuing to bring it to the next level involves physical hard work, lots of unexplainable favours and a daily dose of blind optimism that comes from loving what you do. However WTF is not a one man show but the combined efforts of a great group of industry people and friends. This is where I would like to give due credit to: the collectives, our photographers that have worked with us and Zurina Bryant - for their creative efforts and contributions.

Besides WTF, what other stuff do you dabble in?

Currently in my last year of psychology, loving every minute of it and the two are actually highly integrated.

Learning to trust our instincts, especially with so many different opinions thrown at you from all directions. We also have to take that leap of faith and launch creative ideas that may seem slightly off centre.

What constitutes to a chill-out, relaxing moment for you? Horse-back riding and being in the house of God.

SLOUCH

What’s your fashion sense like?

I always look for meaning in everything I do, from styling to personal collaborations. Fashion sense is one of the first things you notice when you meet someone and it has a defining impact on our identity. Fashion sense, much like my personality, is always fun, free-spirited, experimental, ladylike, lavish and sometimes eccentric.

If you were to be transported back to the 1950s, what colours and outfits would you choose, and why?

Oh, how I love this era of ultra-femininity, of hip housewives and their pompadour – spotting rolled bangs and radical hairdos, while feather dusting their houses in flawless style. The 1950s exemplified class and grace, so I’d create a look of softly curled hair, coiled up with darker, more defined eyebrows, a rosy shade of blush, and a deep matte red shade of lipstick. My outfit choice would work the elements of humor, sensuality and proportion into a perfectly tailored yellow beaded playsuit with a matching hat and white satin and lace gloves.

In your own words, what does it mean to have ‘good fashion sense’? Being able to jazz up or reinvent a run-of-the-mill outfit that has a winning look, and knowing the right elements to play around with as there is a fine line between tasteful and tacky.

FASHION

STATEMENT Have you encountered any random strangers who come up to you in public and commented on your dressing?

On a normal day, I prefer to play it down and opt for a more understated, girl-next-door look. But the most number of compliments I have ever gotten within one night, was when I chose to wear a beautifully embellished satin number from our homegrown label, ZARDOZE.

Vanessa Emily Quek is….

Truly blessed to have a safety net of people I love, who support and believe in me, even putting up with my quirks. Apart from being grateful, I would like to think of myself as being dependable, chirpy, resilient, ambitious, able to love unconditionally and philosophical.

Any future plans?

I would prefer to think of them as stepping stones, on this journey that is filled with unlimited opportunities. Most importantly, I would like to continue to learn as much as I can from my encounters and collaborations with all the fabulous and talented people, and to always remain humble, teachable and curious - it is easy to lose grasp of reality in this self-consuming industry.

RONAN KEATING ‘FIRES’ TOUR Phantom Of The Opera

Ronan Keating ‘Fires’ Tour

BASE Entertainment Asia will revive Broadway’s longest running musical, The Phantom Of The Opera, this July. Last seen entertaining audiences in 2007, The Phantom Of The Opera can be considered a worldwide masterpiece, the brainchild of the massively talented Andrew Lloyd Webber. To jog memories, the musical tells of a masked music genius known as “The Phantom”, who resides in the depths of the Paris Opera House and falls in love with a champion vocalist that is Christine. But of course, there’s another man that Christine loves so get those tickets if you’d like to see what happens. This is probably the only love triangle story that has left more than 130 million people spellbound.

Being the ex-frontman of the popular 90’s Irish boyband called Boyzone, Ronan Keating is certainly no stranger to Singapore after the band’s multiple visits here. This time, he’s going solo with his ‘Fires’ tour. Having released nine critically acclaimed albums, selling over 20 million records, and recently becoming a Guinness Book of World Records holder for the longest complete run of top 10 singles in the UK, the crooner has indeed made a name for himself as both a singer and songwriter. Be sure not to miss this one night only performance of the, we dare say, king of soulful serenades.

Where: MasterCard Theatres, Marina Bay Sands When: 16 July to 25 August 2013 Price: $55, $95, $125, $145, $165

TEXT MCKEN WONG

Ø AUDIOPHILE 28/72

I come from a very musically-inclined family, and I grew up singing and dancing to music that was played in our home everyday. I was also a very young “VHS” machine expert. As a little four year-old girl, I already knew how to put in my favorite Disney princess movies. Filipino families are very festive in parties as well, and I was encouraged to sing and perform a lot during family gatherings.

What do you think are the qualities that a good musical actress should have? The challenging thing about musicals is that you not only have to act, dance and learn choreography, but you also have to sing and keep your voice in tip-top shape all the time. You also have to be very disciplined and you need to take care of your body, so that you can be at your best.

Any musicals that you wish to perform in but haven’t?

My dream roles are Kim in Miss Saigon, Eponine- Les Miserable, Mimi- Rent, Morales- Chorus Line and many many more!

Tell us more about your character in Next to Normal.

My character, Natalie, is quite emotionally neglected and is therefore a very troubled and insecure teenager. She lives in the shadow of her brother and she doesn’t feel her mom loves her the same way she loves her brother. She is very intelligent however and hides behind her textbooks, but has a lot of angst.

After performing in so many shows, what’s a habit that you’ve picked up before going on stage?

I have what I like to call being “in the zone” where I completely isolate myself and focus on what I have to do when I get on stage. It’s just my way of staying focused and getting into character. I also say my prayers before every show.

What’s it like to be travelling so much and being exposed to so many cultures since young?

I love it! That is probably one of the biggest bonuses of doing what I do. I love visiting other countries and meeting new people and performers.

You’ve been raved about by Oprah before. How did you react to that?

AUDIOPHILE

How did your childhood years influence your knack for performing?

Julia Abueva was once labeled by Oprah Winfrey as one of the “World’s Smartest and Most Talented Kids”. The 17 year-old has already notched up 10 musicals, including Pangdemonium’s 2012 hit, Spring Awakening, and is set to star in their upcoming adaptation of Brian Yorkey’s fabulous work, Next to Normal. What do you do to cope with pressure and stress?

I love being active and I like to unravel by doing yoga (which I relish), as well as running. I also enjoy surrounding myself with people I adore – friends and family – and doing fun and crazy things with them!

What MENTALITY SHOULD YOUNG PERFORMERS HAVE?

Don’t ever be intimidated or scared to fully express yourself when you’re performing. If you are passionate about what you’re doing and you show people, you will definitely be more enjoyable to watch, and you’ll also more likely to enjoy yourself.

You’ve performed in Singapore before. What do you think about the arts and musical scene here? I definitely see a growth in performing arts in Singapore (huge difference from when I first started). I love it, and I hope it continues to flourish.

What do u think can be done to increase THE YOUNGER GENERATION’S INTEREST?

Honestly, I think staging more shows that appeal to the teenage demographic would draw younger crowds to musical theatre. Just like Spring Awakening did! I also think that if schools promoted musicals more, many teens would follow and support.

Favourite food in Singapore?

CHICKEN RICE! And laksa. I love my Singaporean food. There’s nothing like it.

The first time I found out was via a phone call during school. I literally ran out of the cafeteria and started tearing up because I was so overwhelmed. When my friends asked me what had happened, I didn’t even know what to answer. They found out only when they saw me in the papers the following week. (laughs)

AUDIOPHILE She has collaborated with industry big wigs, cemented her place in New York Times’ Albums of the Year, and had the New Yorker gushing as well. Emmy the Great (aka Emma-Lee Moss), is stirring waves again, with a third album in the pipeline produced by award-winning producer Ludwig Goransson. In town recently to perform at the House of Häagen-Dazs launch party – a platform to cement the brand’s luxury positioning and craftsmanship – Emmy’s vocals were at her trademark euphonious best. MCKEN WONG finds out more about this indie sensation with a refreshing sense of humour. You’ve been described as the ‘female counterpart to Bon Iver’, as well as being the answer to folk music’s prayer. How do you feel about all these praises coming your way?

It makes me feel really happy, of course. It’s like a little validation. But I try not to hold on to that feeling for too long or I get comfortable. In the same vein, I try not to hold on to the misery of being criticised for long, because it will mess with my head.

Ø AUDIOPHILE 30/72

Your music revolves around indie-folk, occasionally with a hint of pop. How did you get attracted to such music genres in the first place?

I think there’s something about pop music and puberty. Sometimes it’s the only thing that gets you through, and then when you get older you can’t let it go. Music was my first love pop music mainly, because I was a kid and that’s what kids like. But then when I wrote my songs there was a lot of folk influences coming from the US, and I think that, along with the fact that I didn’t have a lot of musical ability at hand, meant that my first demos were acoustic and I grew from there.

HOW DO YOU HANDLE CULTURES WHILE GROWING UP? Self-doubt!!! Sometimes it’s so loud I can’t write at all.

] AND HOME IS...Hong Kong or London? London right now. How have you grown as a person after experiencing different cultures while growing up?

I don’t get fazed by much, I wonder if that’s the reason. I’m used to a lot of people coming and going from my immediate world, and so I also tend towards that in my own life.

What/who inspires you?

Literally everything seems to inspire me, but a lot of the time it makes me so excited that I can’t actually do anything about it.

The poison and the medicine.

GO INDIE

What emotions do you want listeners to feel when they hear your music?

What do you intend to do that can reach out to fans in far-flung countries like Singapore?

FACED ANY TROUBLES WHILE STARTING OUT?

A lot of inner turmoil. A sense of not wanting to be influenced by producers, A&R men etc, before I’d worked out my own voice. I think in a way I emerged from the Internet too early, and hadn’t had a chance to develop when I was getting a lot of the early industry attention.

How did you overcome them?

Thankfully, I muddled through. I think the trick is to be adaptable and be aware.

A good song is.....

Any emotion they need! But I love it when I hear that someone used my album to get through a breakup. That makes me proud.

How do you stamp your trademark on a song? Approach the UK Patent Office.

The emotions you input into a song, are they personal?

Yes, the emotions are mine, but they don’t always come from the same place in the song as in real life.

Be myself, hope someone gets it.

something about you that nobody knows about?

My nose is bleeding right now and I have no idea what to do about it.

Some advice for our local budding indie artists out there

Album Reviews Mcken Wong smokes out a choice few for your playlist.

The Blessed Unrest Sara Bareilles

Epic Records The American singer-songwriter has admitted that 2012 was a year of ‘deconstruction’ and ‘growling back at those monsters’, something which we can only nod our heads and understand. After 2010’s Kaleidoscope Heart, she is set to release The Blessed Unrest on 16 July, headlined by the addictive new single – Brave. Featuring catchy percussive backbeats, feel-good lyrics and a tempo that stirs a hint of King of Anything, there’s no knifetwisting in this song’s alter ego. Upbeat and cheerful it may be, but the rest of the album does not take precedence. Cautious and quiet ballads permeate the list, although a suspected style change doesn’t affect Bareilles’ exquisite music-making talent.

Skitszo Colette Carr

Interscope Records It’s not every day that you can come across an album that’s inspired by a schizophrenic uncle. American electropop and synthpop sensation, Colette Carr, is doing just that. Her preference for sing-speak rapping, good old pop and colourful refrains take centre-stage within Skitszo – to be released 9 July. Fans can look forward to chromatic singles like (We Do It) Primo and Like I Got a Gun. If your eyebrows are still furrowed at bubble gum stereotypes, Carr’s not. She slices away the over cutesy shenanigans and tops them with edgy collaborative cherries - with Far East Movement’s Kev Nish and Porcelain Black to name a couple. In our own words, it’s conclusive pop.

The Love Language Merge Records

An indie band from Raleigh, North Carolina, The Love Language was pretty much birthed from the emotional turmoil and heartbreak of leader Stuart McLamb after breaking up with his girlfriend. Not surprisingly, his songs have sometimes been written under the influence of alcohol and sorrow, comprising a mix of bleedingheart pop and lo-fi energy. July 23rd will see the release of Ruby Red, an ambitious congregation of 10 tracks that siphoned talents from over 20 musicians. Opening anthem Calm Down is anything but calm, with a fast-pace rhythmic show that interlaces constant drum beats, tambourine sniffs and peachy vocals that remind us of Spector. It’s an album with a distinct chereography, and we’re pleased because we can feel the sweat and toil that go into the recording.

To the Happy Few Medicine

Wall of Sound American alternative rock gurus, Medicine, is slated to unveil their latest album 5 August, titled To the Happy Few. The noise pop specialists actually broke up in 1995, after releasing Her Highness, but reformed briefly eight years later. If we are to recap memory, Shannon Lee (aka Bruce Lee’s daughter) is part of the band, together with original founder and ex-Savage Republic drummer Brad Laner. In this album, have a go at hit single Long as the Sun – a tease/toil of your ear drums with artful fuzz (depending on your taste), and a gradual smashing crescendo after two minutes and twenty three seconds. For keepsake, the album’s available in vinyl format for those with turntables at home.

Vicissitude Maps

Mute Records

Maps, the recording name of James Chapman, is swiftly re-establishing himself in the modern music industry. Since stepping onto the scene in 2007, Chapman’s non-confrontational and introspective style endeared him to, as he understands, the niche group of fans – appreciative, non-light sticks wielding, and subtle head-boppin. Combining the lost genre of shoegazing, indie rock and electronica can be a fine line between genius and crap, but Chapman’s soon to be released Vicissitude is of the former. Get ready for the 8 July release, as you involve yourself with an album choked full of Chapman’s creative aptitude, and being one that ‘deals with struggles’. Also, do check out the craftily arranged single, I Heard Them Say.

WHEN OLDIS GOLD

Perhaps the word timeless is used far too often in our modern lingo and conversations. But reminiscence is healthy, and the faithful ones who’ve kept what was left long ago, must have deposited memories that nobody can unearth. In this current society, vintage is a term wrapped up with layers of seals and authority stamps. Vintage however, can be current. And when it does so, you’re entering a promised land that balances ancient obscurity and future ingenuity. You’ve got a gem in your hands (or on your body if you’re wearing it), and that’s precisely why wordsmiths like us will dish out the word ‘timeless’.

Bliss House restaurant’s Chef Dennis Ong and Mixologist Yishu taps on it to deliver, quite impressively, an exquisite menu. We like the Somersby Pasta Fantastica - cooked Bolognese style, cider-infused - and took us by surprise with a burst of sweet versus savoury. Washing it down with the flavourful Refreshing Bliss drink, where sourness from the grapefruit neutralises any aftertastes, we’ve got ourselves a winning combination. OLDEN is GOLDEN

In this day and age when old is almost always paved for the new, we’ve learnt to embrace antiquity and see the beauty in the cracks within the walls. Restaurants and eateries come and go, but some step up their game and revamp, while some take refuge in the familiar and historic. Joey Murray takes a few steps back in time and steals a glance at the new in the old. I’ve always admired how the Japanese valued the old and worn, especially in their art of kintsugi, when they mend broken china with a lacquer resin sprinkled with powdered gold. Broken bowls and cups, once shattered and utterly purposeless, are now useful again, and turn out even more eye-catching than before. It might be a reach to see this being practised in Singapore, but a metaphorical kintsugi is apparent in these amazing places, who bring glitter and life to aged, emblematic buildings, or a much needed refreshing dash of old in today’s stifling never-ending pedestrian evolution.

Dishing up exciting concepts of fusion that many imitate, but never duplicate, the Pan-seared Chilean Seabas with Mushroom and Smoked Bacon Ragout, Truffle Yuzu Butter Sauce is something unexpected - citrusy yuzu lends its acidic, refreshing taste to ‘cut through’ the thickness of truffle oil, and the seabass is pan-seared, which retains its lusciousness without being hardly oily nor dry. Chef Sebastian enjoys experimentation with his dishes, and judging by the extensive foie gras menu – you have something exquisite and foie for everyday of the week! Whether it’s lying on top of syrup-soaked fruits, or mixed with a broken poached egg cooked at 65 degrees and slurped with a freeze-dried chip, expect to be taken on an exciting journey with Chef Sebastian’s extraordinary creations. PERSPECTIVE

Many leisure photographers dream of becoming professional someday. For Daniel Ho, finding a niche in taking portrait shots (and with a little boost from Facebook and other social media sites), became his one-way ticket to something far beyond his wildest imagination. JOYCE NAOMI speaks to the proud owner and professional photographer of One Click Wonders.

Ă˜ 57/72

PERSPECTIVE Every photographer has a ‘starting out’ story, so what’s yours?

I used to perform in a band and was assigned the role of tour photographer in 2005. Armed with just a simple compact camera, I did the usual tour coverage. I found myself getting some pretty cool, if not fluke, shots that took in the right lighting and atmosphere. Once I started to explore the basics of composition, lighting and colours however, I never looked back.

How did your interest in taking portrait shots of people arise?

I went on to do a personal black and white project called Daniel’s headshot project. It started when I wanted to do headshots of my close friends and family members. When I put those shots online, people started asking if I would do theirs. And it turned into my personal collection of photos of people in my life. It was cool when I went to Facebook and people like Ryan Higa, David Choi and so many of my friends had it on their pages. It has truly been one of my proudest moments in photography.

What do you think makes your portrait shots different from others?

Authenticity. I try to always capture shots that are true to someone else’s personality and mood. It’s not always easy since a genuine facial expression could change in a split second. That exact moment, in a particular situation and a matching emotion, is like stopping time. I love this feeling of ‘freezing’ someone’s life, especially more so when no two persons are alike – one of the reasons why my favourite shooting subject is people. I try to make the person feel comfortable, which starts from the very first handshake and leads to a portrait that they themselves will be able to identify with.

Ø perspective 58/72

You have certainly come a long way, from being an amateur photographer to running your own business with One Click Wonders. What would you tell somebody who aspires to become a professional photographer? I never had the chance to take photography lessons or sign up for courses. But with so much related stuff available on YouTube and Google, learning is made that much easier. So get your skills up before you try to start anything, and put yourself out there into the public sphere. Social media is a powerful tool, so use it. Let your works speak for themselves, find a specialization – portraits, landscapes, weddings, etc – and build on a direction. There will always be competition, so try to stand out from the rest.

Seems like everyone is an amateur photographer nowadays. What’s your opinion on all the rage? With professional equipment getting so affordable, I do believe that anyone can become an amateur photographer. It does take a certain eye to be a good one – something that may not come naturally for everyone. No matter how talented, it’ll still take hours of practice and diligence in order to produce good images. Some people tend to think that by using a big camera, it makes them a professional photographer. This is a common and terrible misconception - unless you are willing to work hard, learn and step out of your comfort zone.

More than just

Portugal’s Portal to Port Wine!

Long overshadowed (but never outclassed) by bustling metropolises Paris and Madrid, Porto, as its 300,000 inhabitants lovingly call it, bares its underrated soulful quays, beautifully faded houses, lively, friendly people, and hearty foodfare, as discovered by Joey Murray. Porto’s trademark rouge-red, deliciously sweet dessert wine’s reputation had long preceded this artful city-town’s fantastic aged collection of prominent Baroque basilica and attractive townhouses. But with the burgeoning contemporary arts and night-life scenes, and the great value you get for food, sightseeing, and hotels, World Heritage Site-recognised Porto no longer has to ride on the coattails of her renowned digestif. Porto is a great destination at any time of the year. Having a semi-Mediterranean climate, temperatures during the day are usually constant (and range from high-10s to mid 20s), although some nights could get cold and drop below 0c, it is safe and comfortable to assume that a t-shirt will suffice during the day, while burning shoe leather on Porto’s beautiful pavements. When the fog in the morning starts to clear, and the city rubs the sand out of her eyes, start checking off your sightseeing list with the old town, with architecture originating from the middle ages. Porto’s signature zulejos (white and blue tiles) adorn the many buildings here. A must-do to get the rush of blood to your head is to mount the 225-step bell tower Torre dos Clérigos, and let the gorgeous sea breeze run its fingers through your hair – and you can almost see

Ø globe trotter 60/72

gothic apse and rose window of Igreja de São Francisco (Church of St Francis) in the distance (definitely worth the trudge up!). And when your stomach starts to rumble from the passing scents of cafes and restaurants firing up their stoves for the breakfast crowds, head down to Mercado do Bolhão to immerse yourself in the heart of Porto, where you can expect to rub noses with the hoi polloi, even though some of them don’t speak English. Their warm welcoming spirit is most apparent here – so feel free to try and purchase some of their fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and meat to return their hospitality (and get some good deals and revel in the scent and taste of their fragrant juicy oranges). Though cordial and easy-to-approach, be prepared for direct or blunt replies from Porto natives (though not necessarily a bad thing – they just prefer not to beat around the bush) when asked questions. Some bars do not serve food, and though we are accustomed to menus (and attempt to ask for one), we will more than likely be flatly declined with a short ‘no’. Now that we’re done with the musts, its time to go off the beaten track and do some shopping! MUUDA (Rua do Rosário, info@ muuda.com), a concept store is a great store to buy everything and anything by Portuguese designers – dazzling fashion, knick-knacks, books, jewelry, shoes, foodstuffs, arts and more. For the ladies, shopping mall Centro Comercial Bombarda (Rua de Miguel Bombarda) is definitely a

smaller mall than what we’re used to in Singapore, but do expect to be ‘bombarded’ by more intimate and niche stores with high quality art and fashion goods like organic cosmetics & snazzy contemporary jewelry. Being a down-to-earth foodie myself, Porto has all my culinary and gastronomic needs fit-to-a-T. The people here live to eat, as do I, and the Francesinha (little French lady, in Portuguese) was a main highlight for me. Considered one of the 10 best sandwiches in the world by ShortList Magazine (an online newswire known for their comprehensive and accurate lists [m.shortlist.com]), this little French lady means business – two thick layers of toast are filled with layers of beef, pork, meat, and ham, then doused in yummy cheese and a tangy-spicy sauce, before being covered with a generous toss of French fries. Not for the faint-hearted (and even lil ol’ me, who was an ex-vegetarian, and could only handle half of the monstrosity), this sandwich is best washed down with an ice-cold beer. Fans of the Portuguese egg tart (pastel de nata in Portuguese – most locals won’t get what you mean if you refer to it as an ‘egg tart’), will rejoice as Porto is dotted with thousands of bakeries. They serve their own delicious, yet inexpensive versions of tarts and sweet things that usually include a terrace, allowing you to sip coffee with your pastry of choice. If you want a view to boot, aim for the riverside cafes, but do note you’ll be paying up to €6 (S$9.60) for a cup (compared to the usual €0.95 (S$1.50) at a humble cafe further up the street into the city.

Porto is home to the best quality restaurants and value in Portugal, and most of them gather in the Matonsinhos, near the beach. Papagaio (Restaurante e Churrasqueira) on Travessa do Carmo, Nr. 30 A 4050-165, won my heart with their basic but effective interior, and fantastic food. The beef steak for two (€20 or €32) is a simple dish of a great, generous cut of beef that’s just been cooked in its own juices – choice cuts don’t need much besides salt and pepper to be delicious! And the best part is that a bottle of wine only sets you back €5. In July, Porto celebrates the fish festival in Matonsinhos, and barbecues will line the streets, rousing up the charcoal for delicious whole fishes. Go for the dourada, a delicious fish (prices range from €3 to €7, great prices for the quality you get) – and the best part is that you’re sharing merriment with the locals, making the occasion a joyous one!

Marvels within the Mundane

TEXT ASHA GIZELLE

C

all it rustic, an old world charm, or old town attraction. There I was, greeted by the signage in hues of blue and green, and the peeling stucco that narrates history of itself. I ambled up the concrete steps to this 76-year old bakery that bakes goodness in a coaland-wood-fuelled oven till to date. Albeit having painted the walls on a regular, the smoldered walls had a tale to tell. Many of whom seemed to be locals who paced in and picked their pastries while some sat down to watch their breads being baked. It felt as if I was starring in a period film or time-warped to the 1930s. This was exactly what had brought me to Salahuddin Bakery at 26 Jalan Dhoby, Johor Bahru, Malaysia on the eve of a public holiday. Escaping my mishmash of routine life in the random red dot was definitely on my agenda. I developed this itchy feet syndrome to seek some off-the-beaten-track places to visit. Being a little less ambitious, I decided on the closest destination to embark on. Little did I know that it would be a time-travel to an epoch so far back. Mr Salahuddin, the grandson of Mr Shariff Mohamed Mahku, who set foot in Johor Bahru in 1937, took reign of this legacy. His decision to retain the ways of baking has preserved the soul of this place, where work starts way before the break of dawn. It takes a whole of four hours to prepare for the first bake of the day.

Salahuddin Bakery has a smorgasbord of dough goodness namely plain breads, cupcakes, buns with palatable fillings such as curry, coconut, sugar-dusted buns, Bengali curry puffs (the ones that are fashioned in the triangular shape) with innards like mutton, chicken or potato and baguettes like those that taste scrumptious when dipped into a meat stew or curry. It sure was my lucky day as I witnessed how a masonry oven, that is widely used in Persian Gulf to bake flat breads, worked.

HIAP JOO BAKERY I traipsed across the chunky cobblestones that lead to a car park, looking a little lost with a slip of note in my hands. So where was this No.13, Jalan Tan Hiok Nee? I approached a passer-by who was more than pleased to direct me. And I was successful in discovering my next destination even in the sweltering heat. Thanks to the waft of aromas of mornings’ first offerings from the Hiap Joo Bakery!

GLOBE TROTTER TROTTER

A smug-looking pie that had brazed the heat of the coal fire was waiting to be scooped away by an elongated, shovel-like tool. Grinning at the fact that I was spoilt for choice indeed, I cherrypicked my pastries, clicked a few snaps, chirped a “shukriya” (thank you in Urdu) and silently ached for this bakery to be around still in the winter of my life so that I could recount my maiden visit to my grandchildren.

Witnessing a family of three generations operating like busy bees in this narrow spaced outlet, warmed my heart. Just like its neighbor, Salahuddin Bakery, Hiap Joo too uses a red bricked kiln that has been around since the day it was instituted. “A family business that has thrived for almost a century in the old downtown of Johor Bahru.” I smiled to myself in astonishment. Even then, they had this unpretentious, modest and jolly spirit about them which is quite a sporadic sight when compared to where I have lived all my life. The coveted banana cakes were clearly the star of the menu. The buns may look a little charred but it’s all part of the visual game that has won fierce loyalty of customers over the decades. In fact, every confection by them is a signature piece with a personalised tang that exclusively belongs to Hiap Joo Bakery.

Jusco Tebrau Shopping Mall The urge for some shopping therapy after relishing the ambience of historical tourism got me to Jusco Tebrau Shopping Mall. Never misapprehend the lack-lustered airs about the building. Basically it’s a bustling shopping arena where you can find high-end brands to high street fashion outlets. You name it, they have it; from sundresses to Oxford heels. The 20-minute cab ride which costs around RM25 is worth it, lest you wish to protect yourself from the consumerism guilt. I was blessed with the kindest cabbie ever, and I couldn’t help but tip him for his tenacity in bringing me safely to my final destination.

Hit by pellets of rain and just as it was about to morph into a deluge, I hailed a taxi to dodge the dramatic weather. I mused over the day to my overly concerned mother, who was curious to know if I had bought her a slab of the fluffiest banana cake in town. While having my eyes fixated on the ‘No Kissing’ signage behind the cabbie’s seat, I was somewhat warmed to the glories of staying a little longer for dinner. As if on irony, the meteorological conditions and indignities of snake-like queues at the checkpoint got me sauntering back to the customs. The speed of check-in, especially, is paramount on the eve of a public holiday or weekends, for that matter. With the abrupt ending to my itinerary-on-wheels, I made a vow to return for the terribly missed outdoor dining experience. Sincerely yearning to return to the other side of Causeway for a food trail that is not too far off in my marvelswithin-the-mundane list.

Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple It felt like a feat to visit the first ever Hindu glass temple in the world situated at 22 Lorong 1, Jalan Tebrau, Johor Bahru. Tucked away from the Tebrau Highway and enveloped by dense greenery, Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple’s antiquity dates back to 1922. It is rather incredible that the temple with a Dravidic architecture has evolved into the state’s tourist attraction. I deposited my heels (a bad idea when exploring) at the shoe storage corner and washed my calloused feet. Upon entering the temple, my eyes had to adjust to the sudden shimmer emitted by the brilliantly coloured glass mosaics that sequined the walls and ceilings. As soon as there was a drift of incense and the temple’s bells started resonating through the glass interiors, I realised I had to unleash my alter ego via my Canon 550D. I was almost done.

SELF

Aloysius Chow answers a couple of burning questions that may be familiar to some. I suspect that I have obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). I would change my pillow cases and bedsheets once every three days, wash my spoons and forks at least twice before using them, and at restaurants, I’d bring wet wipes to clean my cutlery. At times, I feel that I’m being followed, even though I’m a guy, and I feel very uneasy in enclosed spaces - such as in a lift. I’ll never sit on public buses or trains, and in taxis, I’d wipe the seat with a wet wipe prior to sitting on it. Are these symptoms of OCD?

Due to the many reports in the media about diseases caused by viruses (e.g. MERS, H7N9), it is understandable that some of us are more careful especially in public places when we have to share (e.g. utensils, seats). But sometimes, these concerns are slightly exaggerated because of what we are exposed to in the media. To illustrate this point, a microbiologist in the UK conducted a study and reported that the amount of harmful bacteria on a computer keyboard is five times more than that on a toilet seat. Until that report, most of us would eat a sandwich while typing a report. Can you imagine tapping your fingers on a toilet seat and eat a sandwich at the same time? It is supposedly cleaner than a keyboard! Hence the point here is what is the reason for the routines you had described? Did something happen to you before (e.g. food poisoning after eating out)? This is because what you have described does not reflect the typical behaviours of someone with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The reason why you ought to find out why you entertain your routine is because for individuals with OCD, their thoughts and fears (i.e. obsessions) drive them to engage in routines (compulsions). If you realise that your reasons for engaging in these routines do not make sense, try asking yourself why you started in the first place.

But if this makes you feel uncomfortable, speak with a professional counsellor or psychologist. If you really are suffering from OCD, trying to ignore or stop your obsessions and compulsions can be extremely stressful and may cause more distress to you. With regards to you feeling that you are being followed, do you feel this often? And when you are in an enclosed space, note your experiences (e.g. heart palpitations, sweating). It will be useful to keep a record (e.g. diary) of these experiences. This is because when you do speak with a professional counsellor or psychologist, an accurate record like this will be helpful for giving the counsellor or psychologist a better picture of what you are going through. If you want to try managing yourself first, try some relaxation techniques. These techniques include listening to relaxing music, deep breathing exercises and yoga. You can also try exercising (e.g. jogging, swimming) or talk to friends you trust. These aim to calm you down and provide you with the support you will need.

What is defined as an abusive relationship? Besides physical abuse, I feel that emotion -al abuse is just as serious, and I would like to know how I can cope with emotional abuse. My boyfriend doesn’t lay a hand on me, but he yells at me and calls me names with such regularity that I’m always half-expecting him to launch another outburst. What can I do to help him, or myself? I feel trapped in a vicious cycle, so much so that I fear I may grow numb to his criticisms and accept them doubting my self worth. Please advise. An abusive relationship is characterised by an individual controlling a partner through the use of abusive and intimidating behaviours. These behaviours can be emotional, financial, physical, psychological, social or a combination of the listed. Although a common sign of abusive relationships include physical abuse like slaps and punches thrown, an abusive relationship rarely starts like this. Instead the power and control starts with threats (e.g. I will kill myself if you do not skip work and spend more time with me) or intimidating outbursts like what you have described. You have to be aware that these may escalate into other forms like isolation and even physical attacks. The reason why you feel trapped is because of the fear about you doubting your self-worth. This is a result of the control which your partner is exerting over you. This fear can also be a fear about what your partner may do to you if you were to end your relationship. This ought to be taken into consideration if you want to end the cycle you feel you are in. Other than fear, some other things which victims in an abusive relationship face are fatigue and forgiveness. Fatigue refers to the many times a victim tries to end the abusive cycle but fails. This may contribute to the victim feeling hopeless and powerless, which adds on to the power the abuser has over the victim. Forgiveness refers to the times the victim forgives the abuser because the abuser had promised to change before, yet time and again the abuse continues.

If you want to better understand what is happening, an option is to reflect on the experiences your boyfriend had when he was growing up. Did he experience abuse for a long period of time when he was young? And consider your own experience with this same question. The reason for this introspection is that when someone is abused for a long enough period of time, this person will become socialised to be abused. And this has been cited by some victims of abusive relationships to be why they still continue to be part of an abusive relationship. Speak with someone you trust (e.g. a close friend or a parent) or to a professional counsellor. You can share your experience and ask for their support. You are not alone and you should not be, especially in such a situation. No one deserves to be in an abusive romantic relationship, especially when the ingredients of one are the antitheses of abuse. Advisor AL REAL IDENTITY: ALOYSIUS CHOW, PERPETUAL LEARNER OF PSYCHOLOGY. ADVOCATE OF SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE AND LOGICAL EXPLORATION FOR THE GOOD OF MANKIND.

Remember, abusive relationships are fuelled by the insecurity of the abuser. Usually the abuser feels that his place in society is not as high as he would like. This makes the abuser feel “weak” and “unloved” by the people in his social circle. So the irony here is the abuser tries to achieve a sense of control by abusing the vulnerable people in his social circle, which may be you. Every time you succumb to your boyfriend’s verbal abuse, his sense of control is strengthened, which to him justifies his actions.

WORK IT

The truth is simple; we want to be rocking that tight body regardless of age. To achieve that, we’d need a balanced diet and consistent exercise – lots of discipline and self-motivation. And most of us have fallen by the wayside, in one way or another. Instead of following the conventional and healthy route, we often find ourselves being ambushed with diet myths, enticing us to opt for the easy way out. Choo HuiQuan finds out more.

WORK IT

Diet Myth One

Low-fat or No-fat foods help you lose weight.

Myth ONE Debunked!

Low-fat or Fat-free products often contain more sugar and other unhealthy ingredients. It is hard to understand that low-fat or fat-free foods are, taste free too. To make up for the lack of taste, manufacturers try to mimic the taste of the original, fullfat product by adding extra sugar, flour, thickeners and salt into this “healthier” version, and the calorie content goes up as you’d expect. When it comes to health, the type of fat you consume is actually more important than the amount of fat you eat. Saturated fats, otherwise known as bad fats are the main culprit of high cholesterol levels and heart disease. They are commonly found in animal products like beef, lamb, chicken, pork and dairy products. Processed foods, fried foods and margarine contain high amounts of trans fats, which is also another culprit of heart failure.

Diet Myth Three

Choose the good fats like monosaturated and polyunsaturated fats, mainly found in liquid oils such as canola, safflower, olives, nuts, oats and fish. These fats do not raise cholesterol levels and may even reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.

Tip: Keep everything in moderation. No one ever said chocolate was bad, or hands off that burger! It is not what we put into our mouths, but rather how much that makes them so unhealthy. As long as you learn how Myth Three Debunked! It is not when you eat, but rather what you eat to moderate, you can even pamper yourself with treats every once in a while to curb those within a 24-hour period. cravings. Generally, a moderately active woman requires approximately 2,200 calories a day, Myth Number Five while a man requires about 2,600 calories. Strength training will bulk me up The required amount of calories increases

Diet Myth Two

as we are more active, and decreases as we age. You get the drift.

Myth Two Debunked!

“A person who skip meals during the course of the day then overload during dinner, are the ones who are more likely to be overweight than those who eat regularly throughout the day,” says Patrick.

Crash dieting or fasting will help you shed kilos.

This method may work in the short term, but will ultimately cause more harm than good.

Eating after 8pm will result in weight gain.

Regular meals help regulate appetites and hunger, improving metabolism and prevent the chances overeating.

Losing weight on a long-term basis burns off fats. Crash diets or fasting on the other hand, not only remove fats but also lean muscle and tissue. The loss of lean muscles results in a decline of your basal metabolic rate - the total amount of calories your body requires on a daily basis. Meaning to say, your body will require fewer calories than it did previously, making the weight gain more extreme once you stop dieting.

Diet Myth Four

“You’re better off exercising and building up your muscles, which helps to burn more calories overall,” says fitness enthusiast, Patrick Chan. “This is exactly also why exercise is always recommended in any weight-loss plan to help build muscle and maintain metabolic rate.”

Ever tried skipping a meal? Told yourself you’ll skip breakfast today to make up for yesterday’s dessert? Or that lunch would be healthier and lighter later on?

A pound of fat-free tissue burns about 14 calories a day, while a pound of fat burns just two to three calories. Doesn’t sound like much? That’s almost 400 calories in a month!

Forgoing a meal the next day to compensate for today’s sins.

Myth Four Debunked!

You tend to gain weight once you have exceeded your calorie intake for that day.

Myth FIVE Debunked!

Bulking is already very difficult for a man, and even more difficult for a woman. Women typically do not have an adequate amount of testosterone necessary to build large muscles, and this, definitely does not happen overnight. Bulking requires months, or even years of focused, dedicated training and calorie-rich diets to produce the type of muscle volume you consider as bulky. Fret not. You will never turn into Hulk Hogan after a mere day of weight lifting. In addition, the reduced-calorie diet that you’re restricting yourself to will make bulking next to impossible. For women, strength training will give your body the shape, definition and that lean and toned appearance that most of you crave for. So why hesitate?

If you’ve done this, you’d probably end up feeling famished. Your stomach feels like it’s been squeezed, sucked and dried. Then you start to picture that burger shop sitting around the corner, baiting you with its beef patties, tempting you with its fries. Skipping meals are trigger buttons for binge eating. You’re not that hungry, but your mouth itches for something. Soon, it turns into a full fledge binge-a-thon. When you wake up the next morning, your guilt conscience hits you, and you vow to skip a meal to make up for it. The cycle goes on.
