October - The year is really ending now. It also means that we need to look to 2022. What it has in store for us is a good guess. One thing is for sure: applications! This time we look at the mysterious world of applications. The new normal dictates that it will be a lot of online stuff. But how? Also something simple: who can prepare us for all this? This is where we get industry views district, Savuka, TVET and so on. And the cinemas are back - I think! Look at what is screening. And look at the fun stuff as well. Good Read!

Year-end is nigh – and that means applications. True that a lot of university deadlines are over, but that is after all only a part of it. There is a world beyond university and that requires applications, be it for a job or for further education. It is this world we will be looking at. And that world has changed. Online and zoom interviews are all a part of it now, but how do we go about that? How can we benefit from all of this? We have ‘harvested’ views from industry experts and this is probably the closest we can get to real-life advise. What is a district doing in will an employer look companies? All of these things are is what we will unpack in

terms of helping? What at? What about overseas big mysteries and that this issue.

This is not only grade 12 stuff. Grade 10 and 11 can start the process now. At least get familiar with the terminology. Maybe even try to put in an application (when I finish next year I would like to come work for you…). Stand out!

Getting a job is never easy, but it has gone harder the last two years. That said, there is indeed hope. Companies are still hiring and there are signs that we will be getting out of the Covid-valley. If UK is now having a critical demand for truck-drivers this trend could just apply to SA (not only trucks, but the entire job situation). We should be familiar with the usual paper application. Cover letter, CV and a motivational document perhaps. There will be more of that in the next articles. But what about online applications? I found an interesting article here We will need to look at a job very differently from now on. Insofar as working remotely (not coming to an office) will be a part of the new normal, we may apply for jobs with organisations not being represented n SA. What stops us from being employed in a call centre that is managed from, say, India? We may now also see that an application is a form on the employer website. A future employer may ask all the relevant questions and now it is time to fill it in. There will typically be space for additional information (your own words!). However, that could be limited to a limited amount of words. Look out, it might also ask you to upload documents.

The key thing here is to have all this info at hand. Save it all in folders so you can get to it fast. There are job bords where you can register. Employers do use job boards to scan for potential employees. It saves them a lot of time and they get to see what is out there. Register on as many as possible. ASAP. The other important part is the job agencies. There are a lot of these and they do advertise jobs. Get their emails and apply. There is a list here There are dangers out there – of course – but the new normal will be applications and the first steps done via Zoom meetings. Prepare for a zoom meeting is like preparing for a normal face-to-face interview (which might happen later in the process). Clean up the background and look neat!

What you need to know about applying for Jobs and landing the interview By Ashalia Maharajh, Founder and Director of Sivuka Consulting Applying for jobs can be a daunting experience, however knowing the right way in which to prepare your CV can give you the best chance to getting noticed and land the interview! How to ensure your application gets noticed? We have researched this topic extensively and worked with the top industry experts to give you the low down. With approximately 250 graduates applying for a single job, one of the toughest things to do is stand out from the crowd. But for a young person with little to no experience, how can you do it? Think about your favourite brand, think about every advert you have seen - what do you love about the adverts? Do you love the fact that they engage you? Do they provide you with just enough information to get you to click on their website? Do they provide you with all the information you need? Probably all the above. The same should apply to your CV.

Your CV is your advert for yourself. It should engage the reader enough to want to invite you for an interview. It should provide so much information that a recruiter engages its contents and does not lose interest. Current research indicates that a recruiter will scan a CV for 5 seconds before deciding if your application goes into the “yes” pile. If you had to scan your own CV for 5 seconds, would you be able to gather that you are an amazing person ready to add value to this role? Important questions to answer in your CV/Application are: what are the most important abilities, skills, and knowledge areas that a company would need to know about you to get them interested in meeting you? Top tips: • Keep your email address simple, don’t use an email address that has a nickname in it. If you need to get a new one for free use Gmail or Yahoo. • Provide an updated cell phone number - ensure your phone is always on and you are available • Ensure your CV is simple and has good formatting (1 - 1.5 line spacing for headings and separation of sections) • Use simple and easy to read fonts These critical skills can be difficult to master. Sivuka coaches help young job seekers in these trying times through online coaching. If you are still struggling to land the job or even just the interview, we specialise in exactly this! Just keep in mind that it won’t always be easy, however there will always be opportunities to help you get closer to your dreams. Drop us an email: info@sivuka.com

Learned Lessons after receiving my degree(s)? Smooth Sailing or not? It is more like a steep hill. Getting the degree is an achievement but what happens after the degree really remains of outmost importance and I have learnt that after having achieved two degrees and now in pursuit of a third one. So, what have been the insights I have learnt so far post acquiring a degree? Firstly, it is important to network. I’ve been hearing this term a lot, but I have realized its importance by simply leaning into the concept of ‘Search Engine Optimisation’. In other words, Google cannot offer everything you want, only because it uses Search Engine Optimisation. There’s even a saying that describes this notion in a more understandable way: “Trust Google to give you many sources but trust the librarian to give you the right source”. I wish I could have learnt to understand this concept earlier in an attempt to learn and initiate net-

works that will help me to achieve the career goals I have set. Luckily enough, I have been able to form friendships that have ended up being people who guide me. In addition, I have also found mentors that have been the ‘librarian’ to assist me. Therefore, I recommend that people must build relationships and networks so that they can be able to grow and find the right opportunities after acquiring a degree. Secondly, it is better to ask for forgiveness than for permission. This might sound a bit arrogant, but I think it is important. If you want to do something and you can see that the team is not seeing the vision you are seeing; try and do it anyway. If it does not work, you can always ask for forgiveness. I learnt that as much as we have a lot to learn from others, we can also offer others a lot to learn. Lastly, I learnt to take up ‘space’ and to be patient enough in the ‘waiting room’. After obtaining a degree, it is not an automatic ‘response’ that you’ve reached your destination. It is more like you are placed in a waiting room, waiting for the doors to all your career goals to open and its okay. While in the waiting room, make tea, write notes, smile and work. All our waiting rooms will be different. For someone, it might be taking assistantships, occupying an entry level position in the company etc. Take up space there and work towards when your time arrives.

Masiziba Hadebe

how does a district help the students writing an application? Are there any guidelines for the schools? How do they do it? Difficult questions; hence we have asked the experts. Role of the District: The District reminds all Schools, teachers, parents and learners about the deadlines for applications and funding options. Constant communication is key between the Schools and Districts. Various Social Media platforms have become the normal communication channels. Higher Education Institution (HEI’s) Open days, Careers EXPO’s, Funding Options, Skills Shortages are all offered to every school in the District via the LO Subject Advisor. All deadlines and requirements are mediated with grade 12 learners on a quarterly basis. The District Office support is vital because bursaries that are offered are advertised and promoted by the District Office and followed up by the Social Workers and Subject Advisor for Life Orientation as well as other Advisors and Officials.

The Life Orientation Curriculum: In the Life Orientation Curriculum, Careers and Career Choices are the platforms through which the entire Application Process is officially mediated with learners in the Further Education and Training band. Regular updates on any changes are communicated via the District Office with Teachers and all schools in the district. The LO teacher plays a key role in all of this and that is why LO teachers become a key role-player. The Life Orientation teacher communicates all the relevant information with the Grade 12 classes and assists, supports, guides and follows up on applications of learners.

South Africa.

The link between the District and the DHET: The Department of Higher Education and Training is very involved with the District and links up with the LO Advisor in order to bring services and information closer to the classroom and to put learners and teachers In direct contact with the skills shortages in

Learner’s responsibility: For the Grade 12 learners it is important to follow up on any and all links that are shared on the whatsapp groups. All grade 12 teachers are expected to have a group for their Subject Groups where Subject related information is shared with learners. It becomes the duty of the learners to ask relevant questions and ask for support from their teachers and their District Office via their teacher. Parents could also play a vital role in getting learners the support that they might so desperately need.

TVET applications

We have asked Thozamile Thomas Mvumvu from Northlink TVET to explain how a typical TVET application is handled: Northlink TVET college is currently open for student’s Online applications for National Accredited Technical Education Diploma (NATED), National Certificate Vocational (NCV) and Competence Modular Base Training (CMBT) courses. Northlink College is part of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges in South Africa falling within the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) sphere. The college’s application requirements vary, depending on the student’s desired study focus area (please refer to the college website). Students who intend to study a skills-based Competency Based Modular Training (CMBT) course, such as Boilermaking, Welding, Spray-painting, Panel beating and Plumbing are required to have passed a minimum of grade 9 at school level or equivalent. National Accredited Technical Education Diploma (NATED) or Report 191 programmes are accredited by DHET and quality assured by Umalusi (please visit the college website for entry requirements). How do you apply to be a member of a band? Finding the right group of people to make music with is not easy but it’s also not impossible. Once you have found a team you gel with the process of making good music becomes very easy. In my experience as an artist who’s been in a group, I know that very well and some of the best songs I have ever made came from the group/band setting. The saying “two heads are better than one” is very significant in a sense that we were all creative and coming up with a good song became very easy. Most of the time I would be the one coming up with the melody and lyrics and the other group members would come up with verses. It was amazing as we had someone who played an instrument and a producer as well, which meant that we came up with a concept of a song and recorded it instantly. One would ask how did it all start? We are from the

same township and we attended quite a lot of shows together and it was a mutual thing of liking how one performed and wanting to actually collaborate. Besides music we just started hanging out with each other which made sense when we came up with the idea of starting a band. I will just share a few tips on how you can join a band and start your music career just like me. You can start by attending local talent shows to see who you can meet up with. These days social media is very big so you can opt for a Facebook post or search for any local talent that wish to start a band. If you have access to your local newspaper, you can publish an add or even go to art centers around you to meet people with mutual ideas. Another option is collecting a group of your close friends who have the same interest in music as you and then try to get everyone to start a band. This is not going to be easy as you need to be dedicated and interested.

Beatles in Hamburg, 1960

You will have to practice a lot and also show-case the band to see how people respond to your music and most importantly, enjoy it and have fun. Who knows, you might be the next Freshly Ground or Beatles.

The Interview This is the horrible thing: We will in all likelihood have to go for an interview, one day. To get that first job. What to look out for? Plenty, but here are a few. Don’t be late. Will I give you an extra chance? Yes, I will. But you start from minus something. Accidents can happen, so I will always try to look at it from a positive perspective, and so will other employers. Trust me on that. Say sorry for being late. Briefly explain it so it is possible to see it is not your fault. Because it would not be your fault, would it? You would start out in proper time. That is what I would assume. And any other potential employer as well. So, get over it. And compose yourself. Dress code. It is difficult to over-dress. Remember you are going into a company where they might be serious. You could say, hey, but this is a fancy clothing store selling gothic clothing. Yes, but that does not mean they are not serious, does it? So, whichever way, dress properly. If you

do not know how to dress properly, well, somebody gave you a brain to think with, so use it. And you do know. Disasters. You get offered a cup of tea and you spill it all over the person’s desk. Papers, calculator, keyboard, mouse and anything else. It can happen. Get on with it. Have I ever spilled my tea in the office. Yes. So I will not let it detract. I choke because I am so nervous. As a prospective employer I will try to help you get over being nervous. Why not? I called you to the interview because I think you could do the job. Do you really think that a few seconds can ruin it all? It can’t. The most important thing: I have selected YOU to come to an interview out of maybe 200. That means that what you wrote resonates with what we want as an employee. That means you are one out of five called in. That means YOU are sought after. Realising that should calm you down. Because YOU have the right to ask questions (don’t interrogate me though). YOU are in demand and now YOU need to find out if this is something for you. You have just as much upper-hand as the future employer you are sitting across.

Doesn’t that make you feel better already?

New Exhibitions

We added two new exhibitions to our collection on the floor. The 4IR and Mirror Maze exhibitions

4IR Exhibition The 4IR exhibition currently hosts the Humanoids (two small ones and the big one called Pepper), Virtual reality Station, Augmented Reality and the interactive displays integrated with of a number of TV screens. This concept is through the touch screen located at the entrance to the center. Interactive display section has been created where visitors are encouraged to use traditional touch screens to immerse themselves in games and content around Science Technology Engineering and Arts and Mathematics (STEAM).

Children are provided with the opportunity to play games to train their analytical ability, improve their ability to solve puzzles and chal-

lenges. They are also challenged to explore more traditional content style, such as exploration of subjects including how Artificial Intelligence works, Machine Learning, how data transfers over networks etc. Science Exploration While traditional science teaching has complex challenges around logistics, safety and costs. VR has none of these limitations. Experiments are done as often as needed with no physical costs of materials or safety concerns. Students can learn about physics and chemistry, life science etc. in a safe environment. Within VR learning occurs without any distract but with full immersion. Learning and understanding mathematics becomes easier and more fun inside of VR due to the nature of games and how they are designed. This is designed to make learning and exploration real fun especially for little ones. Wide learning opportunities exist through this exhibition, children have many prospects to learn on, e.g. google earth exploration experience. With Google Earth VR, children can travel to almost any place in the world. They can fly all over the world and explore any city, any monument and landmark anywhere in the world. The exhibition has two different types of humanoids the small one (called Sanbot Max and the Bigger one called Pepper). The Sanbot Max robot was designed to be implemented into numerous kinds of business scenarios, providing customers and staff members with intelligent and efficient services. Pepper is a semi-humanoid robot, which means that a human has to control it. It is designed with the ability to read emotions. Pepper recognizes faces and basic human emotion.

Drones and Mirror Maze Drones Pilots at the Clubhouse Did you know that the Clubhouse has three certified drone pilots? They also have 10 DJI Tell drones that they will used for their drone course. They are currently putting together content for the said course. In addition, the Clubhouse offers programmes such as Teach Fundamentals of drones, real-life applications of drones: namely surveillance using object identification and tracking to videography for commercials and other media use. This includes python programming that covers drone automation.

Mirror Maze Exhibit A mirror is an object that reflects an image. Light that bounces off a mirror will show an image of whatever is in front of it, when focused through the lens of the eye or a camera. Mirrors reverse the direction of the image in an equal yet opposite angle from which the light shines upon it. This allows the viewer to see themselves or objects behind them, or even objects that are at an angle from them but out of their field of view, such as around a corner. Natural mirrors prehistoric times, water, but people turing mirrors out rials for thousands metals, and glass. metals like silver often used due to applied as a thin cause of its natuhard surface.

A maze is a path or collection of paths, typically from an entrance to a goal. The word is used to refer both to branching tour puzzles through which the solver must find a route, and to simpler non-branching patterns that lead unambiguously through a convoluted layout to a goal. The pathways and walls in a maze are typically fixed, but puzzles in which the walls and paths can change during the game are also categorised as mazes or tour puzzles Mirror Maze The mirror maze itself is a pattern, combining several characteristics of geometric patterns: repetition, symmetry and tessellation using repeated equilateral triangles. These triangles fit together without any gaps or overlaps, creating a tessellation. Mirrored surfaces all around reflect the pattern so that it repeats and appears infinite.

Is Agriculture Dangerous? The first thing that comes to mind is: Is it even possible for Agriculture to be dangerous? Or are we talking about on-site dangers, for instance someone inhaling a pesticide or forgetting to read the instruction on prescribed medicine for the cows? But what if I told you that Agriculture as a practice itself has dangers that are possibly as farfetched as the occurrence of a pandemic pre-covid-19? Let us explore Firstly, heavy metals and organic chemicals found in the soil can cause negative health effects. In an agricultural setting, the use of fertilisers, manures and pesticides has contributed to the accumulation of heavy metals in the soils. This evidence has been there for long. However, as much as we talk about sustainable farming and ensuring that the future generations have food, their health might also be affected negatively. On the other hand, a large amount of organic chemicals come from the agricultural application of herbicides, insecticides and nemacticides. Interestingly, the exact dangers of these metals and organic chemicals have not been quantified or well-studied, and that on its own is a danger. Secondly: the Zoonotic infections that occur as a result

of soil pathogens. There is limited information on how these infections are related to Agriculture. Bacillus anthracis is a bacteria that causes the zoonotic disease called anthrax in humans, wildlife and livestock. However, since it is found in the soil in dormant structures that last for decades, the infections are likely to be escalated by soil degradation that occurs due to agriculture and the extreme weather changes attributed to climate change. Then the elephant in the room: animal agriculture’s global methane contribution. Is it a ticking carbon bomb? According to scientists, the methane from factory farming had increased more rapidly than methane produced from extracting fossil fuels through processes such as fracking. It then also becomes important to note that even though methane does not stay long enough in the atmosphere compared to carbon dioxide, it is more dangerous to the climate because of how it effectively absorbs heat. From this but limited exploration, we can see that the agricultural sector has some dangers that can only be solved by the people within the industry (myself included). The agricultural sector needs to look into all these areas and consider sustainability and the knock-on health effects of the current practices while ensuring that people are fed. If this is not done, agriculture will be more and more dangerous.

What are we talking about? Wiki says: A nematicide is a type of chemical pesticide used to kill plant-parasitic nematodes. Nematicides have tended to be broad-spectrum toxicants possessing high volatility or other properties promoting migration through the soil. Anthrax is an infection caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis. It can occur in four forms: skin, lungs, intestinal and injection. Symptom onset occurs between one day to over two months after the infection is contracted. The skin form presents with a small blister with surrounding swelling that often turns into a painless ulcer with a black center. The inhalation form presents with fever, chest pain, and shortness of breath. A zoonosis is an infectious disease caused by a pathogen (an infectious agent, such as a bacterium, virus, parasite or prion) that has jumped from an animal (usually a vertebrate) to a human.

In this edition of ‘The One’ I have the privilege of covering one of my good friends, a very talented young man with an amazing work ethic and drive. Ceezow Spicolli, as he is popularly known, is an artist, singer, rapper and producer from Bushbickridge. He began his artistry as a dancer at 10 and was inspired to do music by his cousin and brother who recorded a mixtape dedicated to his late mother and that really moved him and inspired him to start making music. “I felt the need to move people with sound and not only dance. That is how I began writing my own songs” he says. When asked about the significance of education in the industry he is adamant: “education is very important because it helps you think outside of the box and also helps in reaching out to the world”. Says Spicolli: “I studied sound engineering at CJC though I was unable to finish because of financial issues but the little knowledge I acquired has helped me a lot thus far”.

His music making process is very unorthodox and most of the time songs come naturally. “I can just go to the mic and record a few bars or melodies and if it sounds nice, I run with it and that literally drives me to finish the song”. Being independent is not easy because everything we as artists do come out of our own pockets. However, working with a team that understands the vision and have the same goal in mind makes it a lot easier, according to Spicolli. Spicolli is currently working with MozSouth. Their relationship goes beyond music, it has become a family. “I love my team, they are my inspiration, we have the same drive and goals, we have become a family, we all come from similar backgrounds, we understand each other and most importantly, we love making music together” he says. Spicolli has worked with names in the likes of Touchline Truth, Jimmy Landros and others His advice to an upcoming talent like him is that as an artist you need to work hard, be creative, move fashionably with the times and build a brand that people and even other brands would want to associate with. Don’t stop polishing your craft and stay relevant. He recently released an EP Titled P.O.T.S (Product Of The Struggle) and it is available on all digital Platforms.

It is nearly time to start looking at holiday and so on. And that could be staying at a hotel again. This triggered us to look at the term ‘hotel’. Where does it come from? Are hotels old? Let us see what Wiki says. The definition seems to be: “A hotel is an establishment that provides paid lodging on a short-term basis”. Of course we add in the extra things: restaurant perhaps, fridge in the room, maybe it is not even a room, but a suite. And all of it from a modest price to a hectic price. But where does it come from? Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan is a hotel in Japan, founded in 705 In 2011, the hotel was recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest hotel in the world. It is still operational as a hotel and is still serviced by the same family, 52 generations later! I believe it has been modernized a few times, though. The term hotel is closely linked to traveling; hence the earliest forms of short-term lodging goes back to Roman times. The word is also linked

to hospitality (meaning offering lodgings to vary travelers) and to hospital, meaning rest. Hospitality and caring are sort of the same in this context. We see ‘the Inn’ in English as the proto-hotel really. And now we are into the 1300s. This is more than a room. This is a bed, and fodder for the horses and food for the guests. All of these things are paid-for services. Hotel industry is really one of the oldest industries in the world. As the leisure industry started to take hold and people went on vacation, the hotel industry boomed. It is true that the early hotels were the playground for the wealthy elite. That is where we see the famous names creeping up: Waldorf-Astoria (1836) in New York (yes, the Waldorf salad got invented there), Ritz in Paris (1898), Savoy in London (1889). The boom really got underway after WWII. That is where we see hotels for the ‘masses’: Holiday Inn, Budget Suites, Ibis, Formula 1 and so on. The key thing is that it is possible to find any accommodation that will suit either expensive taste or limited budget or facilities in any major city all over the world. And that is the strength of the industry.

What type of hotels do we see? Let us start with the most expensive one of them all: Palms Casino Resort, Las Vegas: Price per night (the Empathy suite): $100,000 = R1,800,000 per night. Yes, nearly 2 million per night. What do you get: In this 8500 square foot, Damien Hirst-designed penthouse you’ll find an outdoor, cantilevered pool ‘hanging’ hundreds of feet in the air, pillars covered in his signature dots, six specially commissioned art works, including two sharks suspended in formaldehyde, a 13-seater bar and spectacular views over The Strip, 24hour butlers, a chauffeured car and $10k credit to use in the resort. The smallest: Capsule hotel in Japan. The guest room is a chamber roughly the length and width of a single bed, with sufficient height for a hotel guest to crawl in and sit up on the bed. Amenities within the room generally include a small television, air conditioning, an electronic console, and power sockets.

There are also some unusual hotels out there: Underwater hotel: Jules’ Undersea Lodge is an American hotel located in Key Largo, Florida. It is 9 m deep on the ocean floor and guests have to scuba dive to get to their rooms. The hotel is located at the bottom of the Emerald Lagoon and was opened in 1986. Ice hotels

The Icehotel in Sweden is a hotel rebuilt each year with snow and ice in the village of Jukkasjärvi, in northern Sweden. The hotel is being rebuilt each year from December to April. The hotel, including the chairs and beds, is constructed from snow and ice blocks. Artists are invited to create different rooms and decorations made of ice. The structure remains below freezing, around −5 °C. ... and there is nearly a hotel for everyone out there! However, this just might be the cheapest hotel in the world.

Here we go! Something rather crazy and nearly to be believed not I found some rather funny ones here These are so hilarious that nobody (yes?) could believe them. They are all from London as that seems to be the place to start. Big Ben and the lions of Trafalgar Square One of London’s most famous myths is that if Big Ben was ever to strike 13 the four lion statues in Trafalgar Square would come to life whether to protect the city or hunt for victims remains a puzzle. We’re not worried though, this one is definitely a myth. The phrase ‘barking mad’ comes from a mental asylum in Barking, London. From the Middle Ages, nogal. Unfortunately, the dates don’t quite corroborate as barking mad is a 20th Century invention. ... But Barking was first mentioned in 735 - so maybe?

An American accidentally bought London Bridge The Americans do often seem to think that Tower Bridge is called London Bridge, but our favourite little tale that a US Tycoons bought it by accident totally untrue. Robert Paxton McCulloch was an entrepreneur and property developer. He invented the first modern-day chainsaw (among other things) and that earned him millions. He developed and founded several new cities (Fountain Hills, Arizona, Pueblo West, Colorado, Spring Creek, Nevada), and one of them was Lake Havasu City in Arizona. … but he needed an attraction. Something to attract buyers to buy property and settle in his new city (where his factories employed hundreds of people). And now London Bridge was on auction. This was the one! He bought it, shipped across to Arizona, built the city and now look at it. He knew perfectly well what he was doing. And he did it!

ISS is getting old! There is really no way out of it. ISS is getting on in years and getting rather ‘clunky’. It was really only expected to have a lifespan of some 15 years. It is now ‘celebrating’ 20 years in space (actually a bit more if we count from the first module launched in 1998). However, there are developments trying to extend the life of ISS until 2030. If it is possible. And that is where the problems arise. It is now old technology. The mechanical parts are also starting to fail. The Russian modules are the oldest and there are now persistent leaks. There was a fire alarm a weeks time back. False alarm as it turned out, but it goes to show that systems are having malfunctions on a continuous basis. The Russian agency is claiming that the older modules are ‘exhausted’ now. No wonder really. It all started with three modules. Now there are 16. All modules must have lights (power!), air, sensors and things. It is like starting 20 years

back in time with a Toyota Cressida and now having ‘extended’ it to being a Dodge Ram! And here is my private observation: has it ever been planned? Looking at the ISS, it looks as though a new module was just added where there was a bit of space, like a protruding point. There are modules ‘glued’ to the outside and there are new modules being added. … but was it ever planned to start with? I found an article here which explains a lot. The on-board computers are getting older and although there have been several upgrades, it is still very much Intel 80x86 based. Wiki: The ISS is equipped with about 100 IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad and HP ZBook 15 laptop computers. The laptops have run Windows 95, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 10 and Linux operating systems. The operating system used for key station functions is the Debian Linux distribution. The migration from Microsoft Windows to Linux was made in May 2013 for reasons of reliability, stability and flexibility. In 2017, an SG100 Cloud Computer was launched to the ISS.

ISS is clunky The root problem is that the ISS is a complex structure. There are many different life-support systems that simply must work. That is coupled with flying the thing as well. It has to be a stable platform (and ISS had a tumble as well) and that requires even more computer power. Oh yes – the cost of ISS is now at $150 bn. That is a hectic price tag. I do understand that they would like to extend the life with another 10 years. A new supercomputer is being installed. It is from Hewlett-Packard. Technically it is “The HPE supercomputer on the ISS uses two-socket “pizza-box” servers from the HPE Apollo 40 family with Broadwell-class processors and a high-speed 56 gigabit per second interconnect.” (from here) I have not been able to find what programming languages used, but I have a ‘suspicion’ it might be FORTRAN or ADA. Some of it at least.

It could be compared to what is used on the newest Chinese space station “Various devices including a Huawei P30 mobile phone, Lenovo ThinkPad laptop and Xiaomi electronic screwdriver. Mobile phones, tablets are connected to Wi-Fi with a downlink rate of 1.2 gigabits per second, which is equivalent to 5G speeds on the ground.” (from here). I guess that it is coded in C++, Python or something like that. So, if ISS should be kept around for another 10 years, maybe it would simply not be possible without a total overhaul of all computer systems.

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is the most colourdul and amazing thing I have ever ‘found’. Who does not like those balloons in all kind of shapes and hues? All from Wiki The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a yearly hot air balloon festival that takes place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, during early October. The Balloon Fiesta is a nine-day event occurring in the first full week of October, and has over 500 hot air balloons each year far from its humble beginnings of merely 13 balloons in 1972. The event is the largest balloon festival in the world.

These things will always start in mysteries ways: “The Balloon Fiesta began in 1972 as the highlight of a 50th birthday celebration for 770 KOB Radio. Radio station manager Dick McKee asked Sid Cutter, the first person to own a hot air balloon in New Mexico, if KOB could use his new hotair balloon as part of the festivities”. And then it rolled on from there! There are now special events. Mass Ascensions is one of them: where all participating balloons launch in two waves, filling the sky with hundreds of balloons at once. The convention has also become a major showcase of New Mexican culture and history and features numerous cultural exhibitions. The fiesta is one of Albuquerque’s largest tourist attractions and constitutes a major source of income for the city and local businesses. This one is on my bucket list!
