welcome where the rivers meet

Imagine a hot summer day, the sun beating down on your back as you paddle through the cool waters of America’s most diverse ecosystem on a kayak. Or imagine the smiles of your children as they run through the gardens of Oak Hill & the Martha Berry Museum, discovering new flowers, plants and bugs at each turn. Or imagine rediscovering your past and finding lost family connections across the six terraces of Rome’s historic Myrtle Hill Cemetery. Few southern cities can boast the beauty and charm of Georgia’s Rome. Tucked in the foothills of the ancient Appalachian Mountains, Rome is a city that has passionately preserved its past and delights in sharing it with her visitors. Abundant natural experiences await on the rivers, creeks, trails and three gentle rivers winding through the city to meet in downtown. History remains alive for everyone to experience in the many historical buildings, sites and cemeteries pristinely preserved throughout the city and county. Through the decades, our classic town has grown in sophistication and seasoned in character to become a unique portrait of southern heritage and hospitality. Georgia’s Rome, where the rivers meet and the mountains begin!

ome’s three flowing rivers that meet in the heart of downtown have drawn travelers and settlers to the area for centuries. Although Hernando DeSoto visited here in the 1500’s, it was the gentle Cherokee Indians who claimed Rome and Floyd County as their aptly described “Enchanted Land.” The Cherokee influence is still heard in the sweet sounding names of Rome’s rivers: Coosa, Etowah and Oostanaula. In the 1830’s, early settlers braved the wilderness to build new lives in Georgia’s rugged up-country. Discovering the lush mountains and abundant waters, pioneers settled the town and named it Rome because of the

seven prominent hills that rise above the city. Cotton became king and brought prosperity. Mule drawn wagons loaded with cotton bales and other necessities crowded the streets and lined the docks as dozens of steamers and paddle wheelers transported goods over the rivers, our highways of yesterday.

Civil War history was also made in Rome. The city sought sanctuary with three prominent forts, Attaway, Norton and Stovall, located as sentinels around the high points of the city’s center. In May of 1863, John Wisdom, the “Paul Revere of the South,” rode 64 miles on horseback from the west to alert Rome that the Yankees were coming. The town was saved, but in May of 1864, Rome fell to the Union Forces under the command of General William T. Sherman. Soldiers of the Union Army occupied Rome until November of that year. When General Sherman and his men departed, they set fire to many of the structures on their March to the Sea.

A lady pioneer, Miss Martha Berry, made one of the largest contributions to the area. Late in the 18th Century, Martha, a wealthy planter’s daughter, began to teach mountain children in her little playhouse cabin near her home. Her mission of “education of the head, heart and hands” led to the development of the worldrenowned Berry College. With two rivers merging to form a third, Rome has occasionally been subjected to serious flooding. The first severe flood after Rome became a city was the flood of 1886, which inundated the city and allowed a steamboat to travel down Broad Street. In the late 1890’s, the city passed a resolution

Between the Rivers Historic District Downtown This area, which lies between the Etowah, Oostanaula and Coosa Rivers, is the site of Rome’s founding in 1834 and where early business and industry served the new town. As this district continued to grow, the area was ravaged by the Civil War and much of Rome was burned. From the ashes, the spirit of Rome emerged and rebuilt the community into a thriving town. An available brochure and accompanying digital tour highlight the founders and leaders of Rome through the years and shows how a small cotton port became the modern community it is today. Visit the Rome - Floyd Visitor Center for a brochure tour. Capitoline Wolf 601 Broad Street Located on the steps of City Hall on Broad Street, this statue of the Capitoline Wolf with Romulus & Remus was sent from ancient Rome to new Rome by order of the Italian Dictator, Benito Mussolini in 1929. Civil War Sites During the Civil War, Rome was the site of important war industries, thus making it a center for action. Several sites, including the location of three forts remain. Rome is also credited as the beginning point to Sherman’s historic “March to the Sea.” Visit the Rome - Floyd Visitor Center for a brochure or CD tour.

ivers, mountains, architecture, history, and a thriving downtown come together to create the Between the Rivers Historic District. This city center is the largest intact Victorian district in the state. Broad Street, the second widest main street in Georgia, is filled with magnificent landmarks. Surrounded by the Etowah, Oostanaula and Coosa Rivers, Rome was founded in 1834. Just two years later, the first trade was born with steamboats traveling the rivers carrying cargo, mail and passengers. Rome quickly became a busy hub of trade.

exceeded $125 million. The business district consists of 24 blocks, approximately 300 businesses and 2,800 employees. At the heart of it all, Historic Downtown Rome reflects the traditions, values and heritage of a richly blessed community. Rome’s exciting and colorful past compliments the vitality and progress of today. An active Downtown Development Authority, a Business Improvement District (BID) and supportive City and County governments have contributed to the many successes.

If You Receive a Ticket...

Parking Smart is a matter of turnover of on-street spaces for customers and visitors seeking downtown goods and services. In order to insure adequate parking turnover for customers, clients, and visitors, it’s imperative that downtown workers park off-street. The goal of the parking program is to provide long-term parking in off-street facilities and short-term parking onstreet in timelimit zones. This goal is accomplished by creating off-street parking opportunities (lots and decks) and generating on-street parking space turnover through timelimits and enforcement. Off-street rental spaces are available through the parking office and by private individuals. Contact the parking office for more information on leasing.

You must pay the appropriate fine within five (5) business days. After five business days, the fine doubles. A ticket not paid within 30 calendar days of the date of issue will subject you to a court summons. Fines may be paid online at romefloyd.com/parking or at the Clerk’s Office, 601 Broad Street, City Hall, or mailed to P.O. Box 1433. Officer cannot collect fines.

Violations & Fines Over Two Hour Limit - 1st Offense - Warning - 2nd Offense - $10 - 3rd Offense - $20 - 4th Offense - $40 - 5th Offense - $80 - Subsequent Citations - $80 Wrong Side - $15 Double Parking - $15 Prohibited Zones - $15 Parked at a Fire Hydrant - $50 Handicapped Zone - $100 Parking in a Restricted Area - 1st Offense - Warning - 2nd Offense - $15

Chapter 12, Section 12-244,(b) of The Code of the City of Rome, Georgia states: No vehicle or motorcycle shall be parked more than two hours, whether consecutive or otherwise, in the downtown parking zone between the hours of 8am and 6pm Monday through Saturday.
