The Humane Society of Broward County is a nonprofit organization funded by friends like you who care about animals.

Gerry Weber with his dogs Cody and Lacey

From your Board Chair,

hope all of you had a wonderful holiday season with family, friends, and your furry pets! The New Year is typically a time for future resolutions but also reflection and 2015 is no different. We were all saddened by the passing of our beloved Tweety. This issue is dedicated to her. She always brightened everyone's day. The Humane Society of Broward County enters its 71st year of serving pets and their owners throughout south Florida, and this longevity speaks volumes. We continue to be grateful to all past and present donors who have supported the organization over these many years and who give voice to those who do not have one - the animals. This year the HSBC will also celebrate the 25th anniversary of its largest fundraising event, Walk for the Animals. We've come a long way from when the Walk consisted of just a table or two set up for a couple of hundred supporters who came to walk for the animals. Last year's event had an estimated 5,000 participants and 2,500 dogs who came out to support our mission! This year's Walk will take place on Saturday, February 28th; you can find details about this fun event in this issue of Paw Prints. I hope to see you there for a record-setting 25th anniversary Walk! In addition to our longer-running events, we had some "firsts," as well, over the past few months: the PAWS auxiliary's Fast and Furriest Casino

On the Cover: Tweety was the HSBC’s beloved resident mascot for nearly two decades before she passed away at the end of 2014. This newsletter is dedicated to her memory.

Night hosted by Ferrari-Maserati of Fort Lauderdale, and a visit from Animal Planet as part of its first-ever Road To The Puppy Bowl which will air prior to the Super Bowl in February. Our thanks to the Hayim family for generously opening their showroom for the PAWS fundraising event and to Animal Planet for choosing the HSBC as one of only six shelters in the country to be featured during the Puppy Bowl, and for underwriting $2,500 in adoption fees! We are also grateful to the foundations that have helped to fund some of our programs and services over the past year, including the ASPCA. They generously underwrote the adoption fees, collars, leashes and ID tags for the pets adopted at the October 2014 ASPCA Mega Match-athon (another first!), Presented by Subaru. Broward County Animal Care and Adoption joined with the HSBC at this day-long event and together we placed 25 cats and 54 dogs into loving new homes. Good job, everyone. As we begin 2015, I wish each of you a healthy, happy, and safe New Year, and thank you for your continued support! Warm regards, Gerry Weber

Get with the Program If you brought a new canine family member in at holiday time, or if you’d just like to brush up on your dog’s manners, the HSBC has a program tailored for everyone’s needs. We offer low-cost dog obedience and puppy classes at the shelter -- and we can modify a specific training plan for you and your family, depending on your needs. Visit our web page at www.humanebroward.com for all the information you need to register, or call Stephanie in the Behavior and Training department at 954.266.6819.

Funky Halloween

The HSBC Pet Boutique located in the shelter lobby offers several beautiful t-shirt designs by artist Dean Russo. The shirts retail for $22; some are also available in children’s sizes. Stop by the shelter to choose your favorite or visit our website to order your t-shirt work of art on line. Our Animal Care Associates were busy in the fall building, planting and tending a garden area to grow fresh greens for the rabbits in our care. For those of you who may be thinking of adding a bunny to your household, remember to adopt your new family member from the HSBC.

Santa Delivers!

Adoptions

We're happy to report the following new homes found during September, October and November 2014:

Cats: Kittens: Dogs: Puppies: Other: Total:

# In October we hosted a “Howl-O-Ween Yappy Hour and Pet Costume Contest” at Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland Park. Owners dressed up their pooches in their Halloween best for a chance to win fabulous prizes from BarkBox. 150 people attended and more than $1300 was raised to support the shelter. A funkygood time was had by all! The first place winner was a three-legged peg leg pirate pooch.

Birthday Party Benefits the Animals Many thanks to Dr. Lloyd Maliner for thinking of the animals on his birthday in November. Dr. Maliner celebrated his 50th with friends and family at a Morrocan-themed extravaganza hosted by his wife Annette. He asked his guests to make donations to the HSBC rather than lavish him with gifts. Because of his generosity of spirit, close to $4,000 was donated to the shelter. A belated “Happy Birthday” to Dr. Maliner!

Thanks to our Friends The HSBC extends a heartfelt thank you to Gary Fuchs, President of G&F Equipment Rental, Inc. and his staff. Gary and his dedicated employees are an enormous help each year with our Walk for the Animals, working closely with HSBC staff during the setup and breakdown of the event. In addition, they provided much-needed support during our shelter renovation project.

This year the HSBC started a new Christmas Eve tradition, with Santa himself and one of his elves delivering adopted pets! Seven-month-old Baloo was the first to be brought to his new home in this very special way, and he didn’t mind his “Merry Christmas” t-shirt at all. He seemed more interested in playing with the holiday ornaments on the tree.

Dog Enrichment Items Needed

Our Dog Enrichment Program finds ways to stimulate and enrich the lives of the dogs in our care, and we’re always in need of basic “tools” to help us accomplish this. If you’re able to provide any of the following items, we’d appreciate your help: dog treats, cat treats, peanut butter, Natural Balance Food Rolls, baby food, Cheerios, Kongs, Dixie cups, plastic Easter eggs, pipe cleaners. Donations may be dropped off at the shelter during regular opening hours.

Middle School Kids are Helping Hounds

ur Helping Hounds program gives kids ages 11 through 13 a hands-on opportunity to help homeless animals at the HSBC. Middle schoolers roll up their sleeves at the shelter once a week for the eight-week session. They feed animals, clean cages, bathe

dogs, make enrichment items for the animals, raise money for the shelter, and spend quality time socializing with the animals. Students who must earn service hours for their school will gain 24 service hours by completing a Helping Hounds session.

The next session of Helping Hounds begins in March. Each group is limited to ten members, so act quickly by calling Carrie Neff at 954.266.6822 today.

The Helping Hounds held a bake sale to raise money for the animals.

NSU Dateline Health Show

ateline Health is Nova Southeastern University's public service show hosted by Fred Lippman, R.Ph., Ed.D, Chancellor of NSU Health Professions Division. The 30-minute service program promotes the community's overall health and wellbeing. The HSBC was invited to participate and talk about our Animal Assisted Therapy Program, something we’ve done several times in the past. It’s always a privilege to bring our certified therapy dogs to the show and disseminate important information about the shelter's programs and services. In Touch with Animal Reiki

R

eiki is a Japanese form of stress reduction through light touch. The belief is that animals are our spiritual teachers and partners on this earth; when we invite our pets to join in on our meditations and healing, we share the energy with them. This, in turn, gives them a sense of aiding their beloved owners to the road of healing. Scientific research shows that when you and your animal are in a state of relaxation, this is when deep healing occurs with the body on an emotional, Animal Reiki Circle Linda, mental, physical and spiritual level.

Debbi and Lexi.

We held this event to bring awareness of the benefits of Reiki to our AAT teams and their therapy dogs, and the experience was very well received. We plan on holding Animal Reiki Circles for our AAT teams a few times a year. If you’d like more information on Animal Reiki, please contact Marni at mbellavia@hsbroward.com. 6

The Story of Bear

n April of 2014 we had a call from our friends at Broward County Animal Care and Adoption to ask if we could help with Bear, a young dog whose legs had been injured. We agreed...and so began our journey with Bear.

Bear was having trouble walking on his left rear leg, and once we ordered X-rays we could see that he’d suffered fairly serious injuries to both legs: There was a mid-shaft fracture of the right femur and a distal spiral fracture of the left tibia. After his initial surgery, Bear went into an Adoption Ambassador foster home for the quiet and stress-free recovery time he needed. The wonderful Adoption Ambassador family cared for Bear for three months, bringing him back and forth to the shelter for his many follow up visits and surgeries. In addition to managing his medical care, his foster family worked on basic training with Bear, bringing him to the shelter for sessions with volunteer trainer Susan Claire, CPDT-KA.

We received an update from Eligio in October that Bear passed his training to become an Emotional Support Animal for Eligio. Bear is now equipped with the skills necessary to help Eligio with his Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Eligio also informed us that Bear’s legs are 100% healed and he has resumed normal activities. Bear accompanies Eligio everywhere and the two are best friends. We recently received even more good news about Bear – he’s become a cover model! Bear is featured in two books -- a children’s activity book and a book for adults, created and illustrated by HSBC Teen Adoption Ambassador Jennifer Carter, a 15year-old student at North Broward Preparatory School. Bear and his dad Eligo

Bear recovers from his first surgery. Bear had his initial surgery at the shelter on April 17, 2014, with pins being inserted in both legs to repair the damage. We estimate his legs were fractured for at least two weeks before receiving this necessary surgery that saved his life. Bear has received five surgeries, with the last being performed in July 2014 to remove the pins. The surgeries and the medications that Bear received saved his life, but his road to recovery was not over. After his final surgery Bear needed to rebuild muscle strength in his back legs and learn how to be an active dog again.

15-year-old Jennifer Carter featured Bear on the cover of her Adoption Ambassador Pets' Activity Book. The children’s book is 11 pages of fun activities including a crossword puzzle, word search, word scramble, and Sudoku game. Each page has a unique activity highlighting an Adoption Ambassador pet that found a home through the program, which is how Bear found his forever home.

Bear's happier now that his casts are removed. On August 1, 2014 Bear’s hero arrived in the form of Eligio B., a United States Veteran, who adopted Bear and welcomed him into his Boynton Beach home. So, we’re thrilled to say that Bear’s sad story has a very happy ending.

Tweety

Remembering

T

weety, our dear shelter mascot of 19 years and longtime “writer” of the Dear Tweety articles in this newsletter, crossed over the Rainbow Bridge on a Sunday in October. We had been monitoring her health closely for some time; she had been getting fluids every other day and, recently, an X-ray revealed a large mass in her chest/abdomen area which was causing her discomfort and breathing difficulties. We made the most loving decision that we could, helping her to cross over the Bridge in peace.

Tweety came to us nearly two decades ago through our Women in Distress program, in which we assist women through the Broward agency with temporary housing for their pets. We agreed to keep Tweety for a month so that her owner could be housed safely and restart her life, but her owner was never able to come back and claim her cat. Meanwhile, we’d fallen in love with the sassy girl and had even given her the prime living quarters of our entire upstairs office area.

Tweety had a wonderful life with us all. She attended more meetings, birthday parties and camps than any other pet, and only wished that shrimp was served at all events! We hope that her path across the Bridge was lined with coffee creamer and turkey lunch meat.

Tweety is missed by all the staff and volunteers at the shelter who knew and loved her well.

Never one to miss a snack, Tweety knew which staff members kept treats for her and she would visit them daily.

Tweety inspects the sweets at a bake sale fundraiser.

During the shelter renovations, Tweety enjoyed exploring all the storage boxes in the Education Center.

Tweety spent many hours with Cherie in the Marketing Department and could be often be found on her desk or curled up in her lap. 9

Chairpersons Christy Gumberg and Julie Strauch were delighted with the success of the ever-popular event, which raised over $31,000. Guests arrived to enjoy a cocktail hour during which they could try their luck at a Chinese Auction. Mobile adoptions were held on site and, happily, several shelter animals found new homes that day. Attendees also had an opportunity to purchase prize drawing tickets for the chance to win a $1,000 shopping spree at Neiman Marcus Fort Lauderdale. The lucky winner, Betsy Marolf, was thrilled with her prize! A delicious gourmet sit-down luncheon was followed by the muchanticipated fashion presentation, which showcased some of the latest fall trends courtesy of Neiman Marcus Fort Lauderdale. PAWS on the Green Turns “Sweet Sixteen”

he 16th Annual (“Sweet Sixteen”) Ladies Invitational PAWS on the Green Golf Tournament, presented by AutoNation, was held at Grande Oaks Golf Club on November 3 and 4. Chairs Pamela Baynes, Barbara Castell and Lisa Kitei, along with Honorary Chairs Marti Huizenga and Ursula Scott, are delighted to announce that over $160,000 was raised for the shelter’s programs and services. Players started the festivities with a pre-tournament cocktail party generously hosted by Marti and Wayne Huizenga. Those guests staying at the Riverside Hotel enjoyed a nautical ride on the Water Taxi to the Huizenga’s waterfront Fort Lauderdale home, where they joined up with other tournament participants for a fun-filled evening of delicious food, drinks and music. Guests also brought “birthday gifts” for the animals at the shelter, to celebrate the tournament’s memorable year. The two-day event included golf, live and silent auctions, fabulous player gifts and hole-in-one contests with the chance to win a two-year lease of a luxury vehicle provided by AutoNation. Participants also enjoyed a Monday night cocktail party and an awards luncheon that wrapped up the tournament on Tuesday. Mobile adoptions were a popular attraction both days, and several puppies and kittens found their forever homes! During the cocktail party Dr. Harry Moon donated his time as auctioneer for the live auction, which featured exclusive trips, private dinner parties, golf packages and many more fabulous items. The Thunderhead Band provided entertainment that evening. Shopping from the Heart

T

he PAWS’ annual Holiday Shopping Bazaar, held in November at the Coral Ridge Country Club, featured a wide selection of local vendors showcasing their wares. Shoppers who attended not only left with wonderful items for their holiday gift-giving, but also with the knowledge that their purchases helped the animals at the shelter. Each participating vendor generously donated a portion of their sales that day to the HSBC. Chaired by Stacy Sager, the Holiday Shopping Bazaar was a big success as attendees shopped, socialized, enjoyed delicious bites and sipped wine and champagne provided by Premier Beverage Company. There were also plenty of cuddles to go around, as several dogs and cats were available for adoption. Shoppers also had the opportunity to win hourly door prizes and to participate in a Chinese Auction

that included items from each of the vendors. PAWS thanks these generous vendors and underwriters for their support: Abington Auction Gallery, Acacia, ACURE Organics, Collections by Maureen, Deborah James, Elektrik Boutique, Fresh & Fabulous Creations, HSBC Pet Boutique, Interior Digs, Lilac And Lilies, Millers Way Orchids & Nursery, Only Good Stuff, Origami Owl, Park Lane Jewelry, Petra Soy Candles, QBS Designs, Ruby Petals, Salon Bark Spa & Boutique, Smartte, Susan's Jewelry, The Rolling Rack, The Spice Quarter, THRIVE by Le-vel, Mercedes-Benz of Fort Lauderdale, Daniel Provenzano, Edward Williams, Richard Delio, Angel Dublan, Susan Greaton, Perry and Debbie Keese, Coral Ridge Country Club and Premier Beverage Company.

Jody, from Hollywood, fell in love with Poppins and brought her home. She reports that her new family member is doing great.

at TY Park, potential adopters were invited to “Fall in Love” and find their next family member. Adoption fees were waived for pets six months of age and older, and both shelters had a variety of dogs and cats available for adoption at the park that day. Between the two organizations, 79 animals met their new families – and fell in love. Special thanks to Subaru of Pembroke Pines for helping us to promote this event.

Giving Thanks for Happy New Homes

B

lack Friday 2014 was greeted with fanfare at our shelter and at Broward County Animal Care and Adoption. In a joint adoption extravaganza, both animal shelters held a “Name Your Price Pet Adoption Event” on November 28. We brought several adoptable pets to WPLG Local 10 at 5:30 and 6:30 a.m. to promote the event. Then in typical Black Friday tradition, doors opened early and “door buster” specials were offered. Adoption fees

were waived for select pets during the door buster hour. After that time, adopters were able to pay the adoption fee they thought was fair for any pet over the age of six months. As it turned out, nearly all the adopters paid close to, or equal to, the normal adoption fee. A grand total of ninety-five animals found new homes during Black Friday!

Jake got to go home to Delray Beach with Katie.

Snickers the hamster found a home too with the Taveras family. 14

We opened the doors early on Black Friday and the shelter was soon bustling with potential adopters!

Sharon and her family, including their 12-year-young Lab, were excited to welcome Blaire and Penelope to the family. All the girls got along wonderfully!

The Essick family from Hollywood couldn't wait to take six-year-young Moca home and spoil her with lots of love!

The Rivera family added Teo, to their happy family.

Dino met his new mom at the event.

Black Friday Adoption Special Continued....

Kahlua became a member of the Leone family.

Two-year-old dachshund Midnight was adopted by the Stewart family.

Camera-shy tiger kitty Bella, nine years young, went home with Peter in Fort Lauderdale.

Donna and Andrew of Hollywood with Whiskers – their newest family member.

The Knapiks

adopted two felines who didn’t come in to the shelter together, but shared one of our community cat rooms. Two-year- old Sammi had been with us since early August; she and five-year-old Nala (not pictured) became the newest members of their family.

The Koroff family

had been window shopping on our website for weeks, looking for just the right dog to add to their family. They planned on visiting the Humane Society during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. On Black Friday the Koroffs met two dogs, fell in love with both (as did their 11-year-old Lab), and the family grew by two! 15

e recently adopted "Tulip" now "Tux" in May of this year on her paper it said "Sweet Kitten" and let me tell you that is a complete understatement. She is beyond sweet!!! She purrs non-stop, loves a good belly rub and adores our other HSBC alumni dogs Jessie (Cowgirl) and Cody( Optimus Prime) and alumni cat Izzy (Kai). Thanks so much!!!

ust thought I would send a picture of "Ireland" formerly called "Dimitri, a white standard poodle.

He is a WONDERFUL, HAPPY CAMPER, and so am I. He walks every day with me on the beach for two miles (was very frightened by the sound of the waves before) and is loved by everyone he meets. Sometimes I do get jealous. He always wants to be petted and is now on a diet because he loves to eat. I am so very, very, happy he is mine and can't thank you enough. He can never replace the dog I lost named Mufasa that I also got through you years ago; but, he is his own soul and for that I am grateful.

A Lasting Impression Do you want to leave a lasting legacy for the animals? You can do just that, and give the gift that will keep on giving -- providing food, shelter and a second chance to a great many needy animals. Those of us who love animals our whole lives often want to be able to make a difference for as many animals as we can. The best way to carry out that wish is to support all of the animals at the Humane Society of Broward County through a bequest. By making a bequest to the Humane Society of Broward County in your will, you can ensure that your love for animals will continue on…and that we’ll be able to keep providing food, shelter, medical attention and compassion to the tens of thousands of animals who depend on us. You will also be recognized as a member of our Legacy Club. Road to the Puppy Bowl

he television channel Animal Planet generously underwrote the adoption fees for our Road to the Puppy Bowl adoption event in December. That meant fee-free adoptions for any animal at the shelter, including puppies, rabbits, cats, guinea pigs, you name it! Miami Dolphins mascot TD was on hand for the fun, as were the Dolphins’ Offensive Tackle Billy Turner and Stephanie Hickey, wife of Dolphins General Manager Dennis Hickey. There were plenty of photo ops, giveaways and adoptions – which equaled many smiling faces and 31 happy new homes.

Adopters were interviewed by Animal Planet.

Miami Doliphins mascot TD greeted everyone, big and small.

As posted on Facebook: would like to share our adoption story for the winter newsletter. About a month ago I saw the "Road to Puppy Bowl" event shared on Facebook and I started looking at the dogs that were available for adoption on the Humane Society website. There were quite a few that caught my eye (and my heartstrings too). I decided to surprise my kids by bringing them to the event. I hadn't mentioned anything about it to them so they were so excited when we arrived and they saw all that was happening. Still, they had no idea that we might actually be adopting that day. I took them in to see the dogs and there were a few that we chose to meet. As a room opened up, out came a lady with this adorable furball snuggled into her arms. I, of course, immediately fell in love. When I asked if she was available the woman said "YES, the couple who had just met her didn't think a puppy was right for their lifestyle.” My 6-year-old daughter was thrilled so we followed her back into the room with "Pebbles.”

I

We knew instantly that she was the one for us. She was young, energetic, hypoallergenic (I have allergies), and she warmed up to all 3 of us right away. I knew I couldn't possibly leave without her. And we didn't. Pebbles came home with her new family not more than an hour later. Fast forward and here we are, Pebbles (now Pixie) is settled in just wonderfully. She has made us all so very happy and I can only hope that we have brought her the same. I tend to think so since she's always so happy. Her personality is one in a million. She loves to play with my kids who are 3 and 6, she also loves to play with her cousins (especially Dexter, my niece's 2-year-old Beagle). She loves giving kisses and cuddling. She's great when it comes to crate time and behaves really well in general. She loves car 24

rides and as of recent she's having a blast at the dog park. We are truly blessed to have had this opportunity, not only to give an amazing dog a forever home and family but to have given us a forever family member. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to the Humane Society of Broward County, the Miami Dolphins and Animal Planet for organizing the event that brought us together. # HSBROWARD # MIAMIDOLPHINS # ANIMALPLANET # R2PB # PIXIE Sadia & Family

Honoring Our Legacy Club Members

T

he Planned Giving Committee held its annual Legacy Club Luncheon in November at the Coral Ridge Country Club to honor members, while welcoming their guests as well. Legacy Club members are truly a dedicated group of supporters; they demonstrate their belief in the HSBC’s mission, and the programs and services offered, by choosing to leave a lasting legacy to the animals in the future. HSBC Chairman of the Board Gerry Weber shared with the guests many of the accomplishments achieved by shelter staff and volunteers this year, including the completion of the shelter renovation; spaying and neutering nearly 12,000 owned pets and free roaming cats (this includes 2,262 cats in a targeted area in Hollywood that were sterilized thanks to a grant from PetSmart Charities®); educating more than 150,000 children in our community and placing over 8,200 dogs, cats, kittens, puppies, rabbits and Guinea pigs in fiscal year 2014. Guests enjoyed a wonderful lunch, and learned more about the shelter by playing an entertaining game of “Jeopawdy” hosted by committee member Charles Sparano of McGladrey. Attendees also enjoyed meeting two dogs available for adoption, Peaches and Jen, who were surrendered because their owner had too many pets.

Chaired by Jennifer Robinson of The Northern Trust Bank Company, the HSBC Planned Giving Committee is a group of professionals willing and able to help you make a difference. “Planned Giving” refers to charitable gifts that are planned in advance to benefit the charity and the donor, using the principles of good financial planning. It can be leaving a legacy through your will, making the charity a beneficiary of your IRA, 401K or even through insurance. According to Jennifer “a gift of any size is always welcomed by a charity, and the HSBC has been the beneficiary of gifts ranging from $500 to over one million -- and some have even elected to leave the shelter property. The important thing is to plan ahead and recognize the charity by its proper name. Many people think that the Humane Society of Broward County is part of, or a branch of national organizations with a similar name… and that is simply not the case. It is always wise to seek the guidance of a good attorney or financial planner; however, many simple gifting strategies do not require extensive meetings and fees. For more information about planned giving please contact Kathy Tricomi, HSBC Senior Vice President/Chief Development Officer, at 954.266.6845 or ktricomi@hsbroward.com.

Trap, Neuter & Return

adly, on a daily basis we receive complaints and concerns regarding cats. There are people who wish to report missing pets, or neglect and abuse situations; and there are people who want the cats residing near them caught and removed, with no concern as to the outcome. Many citizens call to report large numbers of cats at various locations throughout the county that need to be trapped and removed. These populations, under animal sheltering guidelines, are considered “colonies.” Pretty much everyone reading this article has at one point or another observed a colony of cats, even if they didn’t realize what it was. These colonies may be located behind shopping centers, near abandoned buildings, in public parks, even on college campuses. They might have started out with someone abandoning their pet, followed by someone else also thinking that was a good idea... and if the cats are not sterilized, a colony is born. While it is a known fact that cats for the most part are treated like second-class citizens and are abused, abandoned and neglected throughout the world, a push to reduce the number of cats that are euthanized due to being feral (un-socialized) or unsterilized has grown with programs such as “TrapNeuter-Return.” Trap-Neuter-Return is successfully practiced in hundreds of communities and in every landscape and setting. Cats are humanely trapped and taken to a veterinarian to be neutered and vaccinated. After recovery, the cats are returned to their home their colony outdoors. Kittens and cats that are friendly and socialized to people may be adopted into homes.

decades – is never-ending and futile. Since feral cats are not adoptable, in our society they are usually euthanized. But with a successful program like Trap-Neuter-Return, many more cats are able to live out their lives with the assistance of “caregivers” who feed and maintain the colony, always on the lookout for a new addition that has been abandoned, and watching for illness or injury. Many national animal groups support the Trap-NeuterReturn concept, and when done properly it has proven to be a successful answer to an overwhelming problem. In my experience, the process of TNR offers the greatest chance of success for the cats. It can also be rewarding to the caregivers whose time, money and kindness ensure that no matter what time of the night the cats need to be fed or how horrible the weather, they are always loyal to their colony. TNR is not about rescuing cats, it's about population control and permanently reducing the number of feral cats in an area. It's not about getting a wonderful cat a great home, it's about lowering stray intake and euthanasia rates, reducing costs for animal shelters, and creating a healthier, less hostile environment for the cats. In addition, spay/neuter of the cats eliminates common nuisance behaviors such as yowling and foul odor, and vaccinating them for rabies also provides a public health benefit. Please consider researching TNR if you are interested in assisting with the many colonies in our area, and be more sensitive to the many feral cats that you may see. If a colony is visible, there are caregivers; however, they can always use more hands to assist.

TNR stops the breeding cycle and therefore improves their lives while preventing reproduction. It is a fact that the removal and euthanasia of outdoor cats – something municipal animal control agencies have been pursuing for

Facebook Finds Walter a Home

hen Walter arrived at the shelter in late October, the little fellow was just a few weeks old and had suffered severe trauma to his back left leg. His foot was missing entirely, and granulation tissue had formed over the end of the exposed bone, which was embedded with dirt and litter. We sedated the kitten, cleaned the damaged area and sutured him up. Walter was then put on medication with the hope that the injury would heal. Unfortunately, after a few weeks it was clear that progress wasn’t being made, so we decided to amputate the limb.

page. It didn’t take long for Pat to see the clip of the nine-week-old playful kitty chasing toys and romping. She even showed the video to her cat, who watched with interest. Fast forward: Walter and Pat, and the cat, are a happy new family. Be sure to like us on Facebook and share our posts. As you can see, animals find their forever homes as a result!

After surgery and more TLC in foster care, Walter returned to the shelter to find his forever home. One of our staff took a short video of him playing, and posted it on her Facebook

Walter with his new mom Pat.

N Adison and Pierre are a perfect match.

A

Adison’s BFF

ine-year-old Adison longed for a kitten. Then she helped her aunt to foster a litter of kittens – and Adison decided they were a lot of work and getting into everything! So she made a mature decision, realizing that an adult cat would be just the ticket. She spent some time at the shelter,

carefully selecting 13-year-old Pierre, and is sooooo happy she did! Her mom reports that Pierre has settled in beautifully and sleeps with Adison every night. He also gets along great with their four dogs – three of which are HSBC alumni.

A Friend in Need

man named Richard found himself without a home to stay in with his beloved dog Miss Bali and two of her puppies, and he came to the HSBC to ask for help. Richard had recently been ill in the hospital; when he was released, he had to find new living arrangements that would welcome him and his canine companions. After speaking with him at length and learning the details of his situation, we worked out a plan: Richard would allow us to find homes for the puppies, and we would spay

and vaccinate Miss Bali and then place her in temporary foster care. This would give Richard the time he needed to find a home for the two of them. After about a month, Richard succeeded in his efforts and came to claim his girl. He was thrilled to be reunited with Miss Bali, and it was obvious that she was overjoyed to see him. We are only able to provide this kind of help because of the generosity of supporters like you. Richard and Miss Bali, reunited. 27
