ROLLINS!

This resource guide, in addition to our Anchor Guide, ensures you are an integral part of your student’s college experience.

Our goal is to share helpful and relevant information to Rollins Parents and Families, to connect you with important campus and community resources, and to provide frequent updates regarding what is happening on campus.

In the upcoming year, you will receive periodic newsletters from me, video updates from our campus community, and invitations to events so you can stay involved with the Rollins community.

Readying Campus for Your Student’s Return We are hard at work readying campus for the first day of classes on September 14, 2020 with community health and safety top of mind, as well as remaining flexible and ready to change plans should the need arise.

Current details for the opening of campus can be found at our Fall 2020 Plan website. We have launched a Wellness campaign that emphasizes individual and social responsibility of all campus community members. The new campus requirements include the use of mask and facial coverings, physical separation through CDC-recommended physical distancing, and enhanced cleaning and sanitation measures throughout campus.

The Wellness Center is coordinating a health screening checkin for all students prior to move in and is providing all students with a Wellness Kit. Students will be encouraged to self-monitor for temperature and symptoms of COVID-19. We are closely monitoring further recommendations and guidance from the state of Florida and CDC regarding testing and are developing plans

to be able to address potential student quarantine and isolation needs, contact tracing, and care of positive cases.

We are creating spaces to allow appropriate physical distancing on campus. With Rollins’ extensive outdoor spacing, we are reimagining the use of outdoor classrooms and maximizing opportunities to use Mills Lawn and other outdoor spaces together as a community, as well as reducing classroom capacities in certain areas. We are installing hand sanitizer stations throughout campus in high access areas.

We are allowing students the option to attend the fall semester fully virtually through virtual, synchronous learning. In addition, we are waiving the requirement of living in the residence halls for those who wish to live off campus. If you plan to attend classes in person this fall, no action is required.

As plans continue to evolve, our Keeping Tars Safe website is updated and here to help inform you and your student as fall approaches. Thank you for your continued patience and partnership.

Welcome Week 2020 Move-In

This year, students & families will begin at the Alfond Sports Center (during the assigned check-in time) to undergo a Wellness Check, receive their room key and wellness kit, their Rollins R-Card (student ID) and other check-in materials.

Living Your Rollins Life We are so excited to be on this journey of learning and discovery with you and your student. Encourage your student to make the most of their experiences by reflecting on what they want to accomplish during their college career. Here are great ways your student can make the most of their Rollins experience:

Academic Life

• Take advantage of first year courses (RCC). Part of your student’s first semester experience at Rollins is taking a Rollins College Conference, or RCC class. In their RCC, students are connected to peer mentors who will guide them through their transition to Rollins. Learn more about the RCC program and offerings here.

• Explore Rollins’ innovative Foundations general education curriculumwhere students gain transferrable skills and engage in the kind of practical, real-world experiences that employers and graduate schools demand. Click here to learn more about major, minors, and academic programs.

• Meet with their faculty advisor. The faculty-student advising relationship is essential to a students’ ability to reach their goals and to make the most their liberal arts education.

• Utilize the Olin Library and Tutoring and Writing Center for assistance with research, bolstering information literacy skills, or with content tutoring and writing consultation needs.

• Get acquainted with the Registrar’s website for a range of services such as: the academic calendar, class scheduling, registration, degree/ enrollment verifications, academic records, and monitoring degree requirements.

Student Life

• Become involved in leadership and community engagement opportunities, student media, student organizations, fraternity and sorority life, athletics/rec. sports, international programs, residential life, or our off-campus student association.

• Engage in spaces to explore and celebrate diversity (including ethnic, cultural, religious, gender and sexual identities).

• Meet early and often with our Center for Career and Life Planning for internships, campus jobs, career development and more.

• Maintain healthy physical and mental health through the Wellness Center.

• Get connected to helpful resources from Accessibility Services, Student & Family Care or International Student & Scholar Services.

When your student begins college they are immediately surrounded by new academic expectations, new independence, new living environment and new social circles. Learning to balance all that comes with the college experience takes time. Center of It All: Rollins Gateway & Kathleen W. Rollins Hall Rollins Gateway is our signature approach to 21st century education, working in tandem with our core academic curriculum to empower students to chart their own path of global citizenship and responsible leadership by engaging in opportunities that allow your student to put their learning to work in the world. Rollins Gateway consists of programs including the Center for Career and Life Planning, Business Advising, External & Competitive Scholarship Advisement, Student Media, Center for Leadership & Community Engagement, International Programs, International Student & Scholar Services, Department of Social Entrepreneurship, Social Impact Hub and Student Sustainability Program. Faculty, staff and student leaders provide mentorship and support as students explore hands-on learning experiences that align with their interests and passion.

Located at the center of campus and at the heart of the student experience, Kathleen W. Rollins Hall is the epicenter of Rollins Gateway and brings together these 10 curricular and co-curricular programs in an environment that encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and synergy. Inside Kathleen W. Rollins Hall your student will also be able to experience academic courses in innovative classrooms that encourage teamwork and hands-on problem solving and a human-centered design laboratory!

Getting to Know Athletics We know that this isn’t the way that many of our student athletes planned to start their academic year, but with the health, safety, and well-being of our student-athletes and all those in our campus community, the Sunshine State Conference announced the postponement of all scheduled competitions in the fall sports season.

During the postponement of competition, studentathletes will have the opportunity for conditioning, strength training, and other practice opportunities in all sports during the fall 2020 semester, provided health and safety conditions allow these activities.

On Diversity & Inclusion The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, visible and invisible abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. Inclusion is the presence and the acknowledgement of these identities and voices, both present and not, that cultivates an enriching experience to explore these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. It is about understanding each other and moving beyond tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each one of us.

Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives We work closely with varying offices and organizations (internal and external) to develop relevant training programs. In addition we also offer collaborative partnerships in the planning of programs that advance issues of diversity in campus and community; consultation on diversity strategic plans and initiatives for community members who wish to engage in embracing diversity best practices; diversity education workshops for student organizations, courses, campus offices, and community partners that increase diversity awareness, incorporate practice and create dialogue. From the Parents Council Welcome to the Rollins Family! As Co-Chairs of The Parents Council for the upcoming academic year, we look forward to getting to know you and your student, and to sharing our Rollins experience. Ours is a love story with Rollins. We met on Move-In Day and graduated from Rollins in 1992, so when our son, Nate ’23 decided to follow in our footsteps, we were thrilled.

Now, as Rollins parents, our perspective has broadened, and our resolve has deepened. Parents appreciate a bird’s-eye view of the effects major policy decisions have on a student’s education. The Parents Council is a leadership group that supports the College in building a strong, involved and informed parent community, while sharing a collective parent ‘voice’ to senior administration. Council members keep others informed about campus events and current topics in their respective communities and, when able, provide crucially important internship and job opportunities with students. Our involvement with The Parents Council has provided us with fun-filled opportunities to connect with Rollins students and families from all over the country.

We invite you to become a member of The Parents Council by contributing an annual gift of $5,000 or more and participating with us in Council activities for Rollins families.
