We are very pleased to introduce the Rolleston 2024 Summer Catalogue.
This year’s edition focuses on a select range of pieces for under £20,000. Containing pieces such as the drop-leaf table (XVIII.) and the walnut kneehole (XIII.) the catalogue features some of the best examples of English furniture that are to be found in this price bracket.
The catalogue also includes some pieces for the more academically inclined with a very well-documented giltwood mirror (X.), a mahogany tall-boy (XV.) and a window seat (XIV.) which exhibit the synthesis of the exotic styles of the English Rococo – the Chinese, Gothic and French – in the mid eighteenth century, pioneered most famously by Thomas Chippendale with his GentlemanandCabinet-Maker’sDirector.
Similarly we are also pleased to offer pieces with interesting provenances. The pair of bronzed and parcel-gilt torchères (XXX.) were commissioned by Robert Berkeley (1764-1845) for Spetchley Park, Worcestershire, his magnificent Greek revival villa, one of the most important of the period, completed in 1811. Recently de-accessioned from the Indianapolis Museum of Art is the pair of Neoclassical mahogany pedestals (VII.), which we were happy to acquire. The gilt-gesso mirror (XVI.) and Chippendale period armchair (XI.) have a personal connection for me, being for a number of years in the private collection of my father, Brian.
Other pieces of significant note are the envelope table (IX.), a rare collector's item, the oil cruet (XII.), a fine example of wonderful form, and a William & Mary oyster chest of great colour and patina (XXI.), in addition to others.
The pieces in the catalogue would make fine stand-alone purchases, additions to established collections or foundations for new ones and we are always delighted to advise and offer our expertise in helping clients build their collections. We take great pride in forming these and it is a journey we love sharing with our clients.
We hope you enjoy looking through the pieces in the following pages. If you have any inquiries about a particular item or are interested in creating a collection, we would be very pleased to hear from you at james@rollestonantiques.com and +44 (0) 207 229 5892.

Made for by Robert Berkeley (1764-1845) for Spetchley Park, Worcestershire, probably commissioned by him after his return from his Grand Tour in 1818 when he looked to furnish his Greek revival mansion, recently completed in 1811, in the latest style
REFERENCE
Listed in 1893 Spetchley Inventory: ‘A pair [...] carved black and gilt stands’ on the Grand Staircase
The torchères are a romantic derivative of antique Roman forms and closely relate to a number of designs by the most successful Regency designers.
The bronzed surface and gilt detail are typical of work by George Smith as illustrated by hand-coloured plates in his 1808 ACollectionofDesignsforHouseholdFurnitureandInteriorDecorationand in Edward Joy, PictorialDictionaryofBritish19thCenturyDesign(Woodbridge: 1977), p. 553
A pair of boldly-carved, ebonised and parcel-gilt ‘stands’, after a design by Thomas Hope, the great Regency designer and patron, that relate closely to the present pair is illustrated in David Watkin and Philip HewatJaboor’s Thomas Hope: Regency Designer (London: 2008), p. 414.
The present torchères also bear close stylistic resemblance to works by Robert Oakley, namely a tripod table made by him for Sir William Forbes Bt. (1773-1828) at Fettercairn House. Like the torchères it is conceived in a highly stylised neoclassical form with rising leaf decoration and features a similarly ‘bronzed’ and parcelgilt surface, reflecting the fashion at this time when designers and patrons alike delighted in unusual paint techniques and textures.
