Make sure that students are clear about the meaning of suggest and suggestion. Practise the pronunciation: /sə d est/, /sə d estʃn/. Students read the sentences and look back at the text to decide if they’re true or false.

Ask students to say what they can see in the main photo. Make sure they recognise that the city is London. Use the photo to revise or introduce key words in the conversation (for example, London Eye, Thames, boat trip). In the second photo ask students to identify Jay and Ana. Introduce the two new characters, Martin and Lizzie.
●
●
Read out the introduction to the conversation and ask the question. Play the recording. Students listen and read. Ask them which places in the conversation appear in the photos, and to identify them.
Play the recording again, pausing to help with new vocabulary (for example, somewhere, look round the shops, exhibition, suggestions). Students look at the conversation and find the answers to the questions. Point out that there are several different ways of making suggestions. Drill some sentences containing the target language, for example: – Shall we go out? – What shall we do? – Why don’t we go on the London Eye? – How about taking a boat trip? – Let’s take a boat trip.
True. False. She agrees with his suggestion. False. She wants to go shopping in Oxford Street. True. False. He doesn’t want to go on the London Eye. False. Martin suggests a trip on the Thames. True. True. False. She suggests going to the Tate Modern.

Students match the sentence parts and say/write the sentences. For questions 2, 4, 5, 7 and 8, you could ask students to express the same suggestion in a different way, for example, Let’s go to the Tate Modern. Why don’t we buy a map? How about asking a policeman?

Shall we go on the bus or on the tube? How about going to the Tate Modern? What time shall we meet? Is 7.30 all right? Let’s buy a map. Why don’t we ask a policeman? Where shall we have our lunch? Let’s buy some postcards. Shall we sit down?
Try this!
You can ask students to practise the conversation in groups of four. Invite one or two groups to perform their conversation for the class.

Selfridges is a large department store in Oxford Street, the busiest shopping street in central London. It has been open since the early 20th century. Read out the words in the box and then set the time limit for the matching task. Ensure students realise that the numbers of the descriptions relate to the numbers of the photos. Some of the words should be familiar. For new words, ask students to guess the meaning and to use a dictionary to check if they have time. Play the recording. Students listen and check their answers. Point out to students that the places have a capital initial if they are part of a proper name, for example, a castle, but Windsor Castle. Ask them to name the country for each of the places in the photos.

Students focus on the sound at the end of each word. Play the first part of the recording while students listen and read the words. Point out that all three sounds are unvoiced – that is, there is no movement of the vocal cords. Ask students to place their fingers on each side of their throat and to say the sounds. There should be no vibration in their throat. Contrast this with the voiced sounds / /, /b/ and /d/ where the vocal cords vibrate. Play the recording again and ask students to repeat.
