REVITALIZING THE IDEA OF HAAT AS A MARKET PLACE IN CENTRAL MYANGLUNG

The project is an exploration of idea of market place with a creation of space for people to connect, interact, and transact, These marketplaces often serve as the heart of the community, providing a gathering place where people can exchange news, ideas, and cultural traditions.

Myanglung is a headquarter of terhathum district which lies in the eastern Nepal. Myanglung haat has been serving as the only market place for near by villages . Haat occurs twice a week and has been occurring since decades. The essence of public space , lack of storage and importance of flow of day to day produce gives the idea of creation of market place in this place.

Terhathum being the capital of Dhaka almost 1700 people are involved in handloom weaving. Even being the capital there lacks a collaboration space where they can teach and learn new designs of handloom. I intend to design a production area where people can work collaboratively to promote the culture, craft and goods. The idea is to cherish market place as a good public space and amalgate market with other public functions, values, culture and practices of my hometown Terhathum.

PASSAGEWAYS

Passages are the pathways created by ramps and walkways giving different market experiences:

1. Cultural passage

2. Green Passage

3. Vegetable and fruit axis

4. Leisure passage

5. Civil Passage

With the intention of creating an experiencial and vibrant space i wanted to develop a path which would help to explore different kinds of spaces and dimensions inside the market.

The ramp runs uphill creating a pathway where people can experience the marketplace as well acts as a shortcut for people to travel from lower tudikhel to upper govermental road. My idea of designing this way would create a short journey of marketplace and cultural experience and attract people to move through the axis.

THE VEGETABLE MARKET

“Market place represents the heart and soul of community - A place where people come together to trade goods, share stories, and build connections. It’s a reminder that market place is not just about transactions, but also about relationships, community, and culture.”

CONSERVATION OF CHHAYA BAHA MATH

The Chhaya Baha Math is an historic math located on the south of Pimbahal- one of the happening place of Patan and west of Chalkhu matha having the main deity of Visvesvara Mahadeva in the sanctum. It was built by Bharati’s for residence of Hindu priests. The building is beautifully designed with traditional materials, windows and details and has 3 storey with courtyard and attic. The building currently is in dilapidated state with the building rented to residents and unwanted modifications like plaster walls, partitions, brought to the building.

Patan has a diverse cultural heritage. The historic city is vibrant with the beautiful sounds of instruments like as the dhime, basuri, nakhin, which may be heard in the town’s gullies and alleys. Various festivals and cultural performances are held in the town at various times and occasions throughout the year.

Music and dance are the most universal performing arts that may be found in any community, and they are an important aspect of intangible cultural heritages such as ceremonies, festivals, and other customs. It reflects the local culture, and dance and music are frequently combined.

Our design proposal aims to promote the cultural music and dance with the proposal for learning and experiencing different musical and dance performance in this traditional and historical space. Minimum interventions, conservations and few innovations are done in the Math to make space for cultural music and dance as well as conservation and revival of the monument. The building is designed with necessary changes and adaptations in response to the design program. The ground floor is an open space for experiencing the activities with open music play and dance practice in the falchas and courtyard, the cafe with traditional setting, dance performing and practice spaces in the landscape, creating stage-dabali and seating spaces. The gallery displays the traditional Nepali instruments with the interplay of spaces and creating flow within different wings of the Math. The different zones of building is used as classrooms and studios for teaching, learning and experimenting music.

Previ housing James Sterling is a housing design with the idea of building a part of building by the constructor in form of courtyards and its expansion by the inhabitants themselves according to the requirement. The first built house form is L shaped and expansions can be done horizontally/ vertically according to the owners wish and requirements letting organic growth. The growth of housing spaces is achieved to meet area for according to no. of peoples 4P, 6P and 8P

The reason for building this type of housing is the growing need of housing with a minimum material quality and minimal resources also designing as a module so that it will be possible to apply on larger and significant scale

KEY IDEA

The key idea of our design is taken from the Pervi housing Sterling precident in which the development of frame guides the expansion of the building with development and flexibility of walls within the frame and creating of spaces for rooms and circulations, open spaces for balcony respective to the frame. The frame acts as a guiding structure which helps in flexible partitions of walls according to the users convience and requirement as well as helps in growth of the building.

The design of house is done with staircase in the front open facade of the site creating an open balcony space for the floor alog The design is a prototype for single family house and has spaces and rooms meeting the requirement of the users.
