4 Different Types of Controllers That Are Used in Industries A controller is generally a unit present in a control system that usually generates control signals for reducing the deviation of the actual value from the desired value to almost zero or the lowest possible value. 1. Two-Position Controllers It is also known as on/off controllers. The output of this controller generally fluctuates between two specific values, generally the maximum and minimum value. The maximum value of the controller is generally considered 100% while the minimum is 0%.

This is one of the easiest and most common types of control action of a controller. In this controller, the output shows variation between maximum and minimum values according to the actuating error signal. But when the actuating signal value increases a critical value, the output is changed from minimum value to maximum value.

Similarly, it gets reduced to its minimum value from the maximum value when the error signal value falls below the critical value.

2. Proportional Controller In this controller, a proportional linear relationship is maintained between the controlled variable and the actuating error signal. It permits both direct as well as reverse action.

3. Integral Controller This is a type of control action that shows the rate of change of the output proportionally with the actuating error signal that is known as an integral controller.

In this integrating controller, the rate of change of the output generally depends on the integrating time constant until the time error signal becomes zero.

4. Derivative Controller In this type, the controller depends on the rate with which the error signal varies. The derivative controller serves as a beneficial factor for the system because every time the output varies when any change occurs in the error signal, providing the accurate output before the output approaches a large value. Generally, these modes are not used individually; they are always used in combination.
