1 DE SMET CANVAS - SENIOR YEAR Team: Rohit Raman & Stela Szaboova ,

Team Role: Leader - designing, rendering, site analysis/background research, contacting a company for system cost estimates and time frames, some details & part of the physical model.

Location - De Smet, SD, USA ‘THE LEGENDARY HIGHWAY 14 TOWER’ - BUILDNER COMPETITION OUTLINE (Honorable Mention - 1st of the only 2 student teams awarded Honorable Mention amongst prize winning industry professionals) Designing an Observational Tower for the wetlands right outside of De Smet, South Dakota. Goals: attract tourism, highlight wetlands, tower viewing platform must reach a minimum of 12 meters, and ADA accessibility. Measurements have to be in metric units.

DESIGN CONCEPT Inspired by the natural elements and their effects on the surrounding landscape, like wind and the reflections of the lake’s surface, ‘De Smet’s Canvas’ is a memorable and interactive observational tower for its visitors. The structure consists of six dynamic walls that are customizable by the visitors or the city for different purposes, seasons, or events. The ramps are ADA-compliant and add to the experience of the tower. A vending machine with floppers of the kinetic facade system and souvenir markers greet the visitors on the path to the tower. Writing a note on these floppers and dropping them into any of the slots on the dynamic walls not only allows the visitors to have a personal and memorable experience but also helps construct the tower completely over time, making it a landmark of the community. As time goes by, the tower grows with the community.

The shape and design of the structure is well balanced and simple, highlighting the surrounding landscape’s elements. The small openings between the floppers on the journey encourage the visitors to travel to the top for the grand reveal of the views of the Big Slough, Silver Lake, and the Legendary Highway 14. The material selection is aiming for re-usability and adaptability. Like the Kinetic walls, the ramps and landings are made up of modular units that can be disassembled, customized and moved/replaced.

Overall, this project seeks to be a memorable landmark that enhances the landscape while also enhancing the visitor’s experience by being quite customizable, modular, and adaptive to the wants and needs of the region.

The vending machine provides an opportunity for the tower to fund itself in the future and allow people to take home a souvenir (marker).

The entire structure is ADA accessible with the hope to create a space that is welcoming to all.

Since the ramps are pre-fabricated 2.4 m x 2.4 m [8’ x 8’] units, the maintenance and construction is made simpler.

The surrounding deck is designed to create spaces for visitors to have small memorable moments.

We started off by laser cutting the 6 wall panels to replicate the kinetic facade and the ramp structure.

After the pieces were ready, we glued the mesh onto the ramp structure pieces and spray painted them, along with the laser cut walls, with the metal paint.

After gluing the walls and ramps together, we laser cut the deck and some people to represent the scale of the structure. The plexiglass under the deck was chosen to represent the wetlands and the reflections that are formed. The pickle board was painted black and used as a base.

ENVISION - Enriching The Community - JUNIOR YEAR Team: Rohit Raman, Pablo Fugaro & Stela Szaboova Role: Leader - designing, rendering, analysis/background research, coordinating, and part of the physical model.

Location - Capitol Hill, Seattle, WA, USA ‘MASS TIMBER, IDAHO FOREST PRODUCTS’ - COMPETITION OUTLINE (Honorable Mention) Designing multi-family housing in Capitol Hill, Seattle, WA with Cross Laminated Timber.

CONCEPT STATEMENT We envision a new way for how multi-family residential housing can be achieved. The project invites different ways of living - those who are looking for a permanent housing solution, either single or family. The project also understands that housing may be temporary, therefore the project is split into two buildings - one that accommodates for long-term residence and the other part accommodates for those who are seeking temporary and/or affordable housing. The project also invites the community by having an entire 2 levels dedicated floors for commercial use. The restaurant and ground floor lounge are not only for the residents, but for the community as well.

With these concepts in mind, we decided to utilize CLT and shape our design based on this specific material. We embraced the concept of nature into our project by providing outdoor mix use spaces - a green rooftop with space for the residents to cultivate and use the garden, and a variety of vegetation throughout the building. The building’s open courtyard design allows for daylight. By utilizing a plethora of vegetation, still-water, rocks, and CLT. We envision enriching the community.

3 GETAWAY HOME - JUNIOR YEAR Location - Fallen Leaf Lake, CA, USA PROJECT OUTLINE Designing a building for a specific client using a single frame from an animation that had multiple shapes changing constantly. No more than 4 shapes can be combined to form a single space.

OCCUPANT This getaway home is designed for a mid-twenties American independent recording artist.

The home is located at Fallen Leaf Lake, in California. The occupant is a bachelor who requires a private space for creativity and reflection that is not too far away from home (Los Angeles, CA).

He enjoys nature, privacy, and silence when creating music.

DESIGN CONCEPT The Getaway home is a space for privacy, reflection and connection to nature. The use of cedar, stone, and other natural materials in the structure is to emphasize the feeling of being one with nature, like almost disguised by it. The shape of the building is organic, in the sense that there are smooth curves and sharp edges, like the surrounding trees and mountains. The design is meant to motivate the artist to draw inspiration from natural feelings and all emotions.

SHOU SUGI BAN The site is rich in Cedar and Pine trees. The main exterior material is Cedar, which is charred to have a beautiful natural black color.

This is done by the traditional Japanese method ‘Shou Sugi Ban’.

This is so that the building does not stand out completely and allows nature to almost disguise it.

LOCATION & AMENITIES Fallen Leaf Lake, CA, enjoys a cooler climate for the most part of the year, with snowy and foggy weather. This is a contrast to where the client lives. The house has an outdoor heated infinity pool and deck looking over the lake for the occupant to experience the lake without having to risk the cold. Glass is used extensively to allow the occupant to experience the mountain views from all parts of the home. The design has various elevations on the interiors, suggesting the natural unevenness of the site and allowing each room to be experienced differently.

The Getaway home is a space that the artist runs to after a long time in the busy world to regain his love for music.

4 THE CURVE - JUNIOR YEAR Location - Beaverton, OR, USA PROJECT OUTLINE (Featured in WSU’s SDC Eunoia magazine - 2023) Designing a Transit Station that serves as a work space and multi-use building. Required spaces - Work spaces, Dog shelter, Daycare, Meditation Space, Conference Rooms, Art Gallery, Bus stop waiting spaces, and Gender Neutral Bathrooms. Design must be within the given site length and width and must try to incorporate already present trees.

DESIGN CONCEPT ‘The Curve’ is a transit station surrounded by a busy bus route, where people are moving quickly. The design of the structure focuses on allowing people to be able to transition freely between indoors and outdoors and even across the site without entering the structure. The building is designed with concrete as the main material and Cedar slats on the exterior, which serve as a sun shading device. The semi-courtyards with the curved bridge above serve as outdoor lounge/waiting spaces for the buses. It is also a transition space across the site for easy accessibility. These courtyards also have a pond/water storage, where all the rainwater is collected.

Since this is a transit space, I designed a Post office, where packages can be dropped off or collected, like Amazon.

ENVELOPE The design of the vertical wooden slats that envelope the structure is abstracted to form the shape of the path of the lake to the nearby Beaverton Creek.

The slats are also meant for shading and providing privacy to the occupants.

DESCRIPTION ’Corporate Greed’ depicts the Emotional Perspective of the malicious idea of tearing down old monuments/buildings and constructing new Modern Corporate buildings. As an aspiring architect, I feel it is important to take into the account the beautiful Architecture that has already been made. For the monument, I got inspired by French architecture. The corporate building inside represents the greed for land, disregarding the beauty of monuments with great cultural and historical reference.

This painting portrays the perspective of a stray dog living amongst a human dominated world.

The busy street, tall buildings and cars, that are reflected off the dog’s eye, represent the lack of space and closure for stray animals on the streets. I added a teardrop to emphasize the plight of these animals. The reason for the dog’s eye being wide open is because of the fear that it faces on a day-to-day basis. I wanted to incorporate both an emotional and angular perspective through this piece.

DESCRIPTION This one-point perspective painting is inspired by the ‘Palace of Illusions’ in the book, ‘The Palace Of Illusions’ by Chitra Banerjee. In this book, Draupadi describes it to be her dream palace and also mentions that it should look different than anything she has seen before.

With this in mind I imagined the hallway of the palace to look like how I have portrayed it in this painting. These pillars and arches were inspired by both the Mughal and Rajput styles Architecture.

LOCATION: Darasuram, Kumbakonam, TN, India MEDIUM: Photograph - DSLR - Canon 5D Mark IV DESCRIPTION During my time living in India, my family and I took a trip to Kumbakonam (city) for dance programs that my mother, sister, and their dance crew performed. During the trip, we decided to take a trip to the famous Darasuram temple to shoot a couple of photos for them. The beautiful temple architecture, along with the dancers dressed like the sculptures carved on the temple walls made for beautiful moments to capture.

Since we visited the temple after the floods, the temple was flooded. We took this as an opportunity to photograph the new beauty of the temple and how it transforms with the seasonal changes.

The sun set and the light show started. During this time, I captured the lights forming this beautiful pattern from the inside.
