Typology of project Community Housing
Thesis Project, 2019; Kharghar Guide - Prof Arunabha B andyopadhyay
Typology : Housing Community
After spending a considerable amount of time brainstroming a topic for my Thesis, I felt compelled to explore Community Housing. With the onset of the Covid situation and increased topics taken up for thesis in the past, I had a realization that the topics that gravitate us as architects revolve predominantly around form development and scale, where users spend a fraction of their time and have an element of superficiality to them. On the contrary, we spend most of our time inside our apartments, from the start of our day, to the time we choose to retire But unfortunately, most designers prioritize verticality to augment profit margins while designing residential projects. I feel,

residential areas. As a student in her last year, I decided to design something that deals with placemaking on the grassroots level to have a much rounded understanding of the users and varied interventions that can be used as an architect to make lives better The locality of the project, Kharghar, Raigad is essentially an area inhabited by families with working parents commuting all the way to Mumbai. The reason for residents to choose this as their locality instead of Mumbai despite the cut in commuting time is the search for a more spaced out and relaxed living under NMMC. The initially quiet neighborhood has been witnessing buildings come up rapidly and is losing its character to metamorphose into a concrete jungle like Mumbai. As a response, this thesis aims to foster a healthy and inclusive community for people of all ages and socio-economic groups living in an urban context.

Kharghar district has a strong urban fabric. The Standard Apt. Bldg. is used to create a visual buffer for the central compound and living units. The shared community space acts as a buffer for the private units and a destination placed seperately to be attended during events and functions. The inward facing ambience (for buildings) with a strong ground perecption (limited to 8 floors) is aimed at eliciting dialogue.
Symbiosis
The buildings face inwards and share a common space sheltered by the buildings. The spaces within the buildings have a strong essence of horizontality, which is essentially where life thrives. The life is what Biome revolved around. From microneighborhoods, common interaction zone, a pedestrianised setting, strong visual permeability and potent ground perception, the life is strongly connected to the space and buildings. This paves room for ample vicarious and active interaction which makes the users feel more connection and safety in their surroundings.

The selected plot of land for the Farmhouse is located in the town of Manipal next to the serene Manipal Lake. Placed at a su cient bu er from the main road this plot sees ample privacy and calm. The site comes with a pre-existing tree and o ers good potential views. This project explores utilitarian design. It juxtaposes two volumes - private and interactive. The private zone faces the mellow north sun, overlooks the lake and is connected with decks and balconies to o er the user a relaxed space to contemplate or unwind. The interactive zone inludes a terrace and a large volume on the ground floor that sees the absence of walls to encourage interaction, overlooking the lake. The tree becomes an important part of the farmhouse and adds a rich charachter to the narrative. Sliding Windows and Bay Windows are made use of to create strong visual permeability and facilitate cross ventilation whereas Skylights are utilised to tap daylight. The plane facing the lake acts as an interface for the user to appreciate the calm away from the the chaos and hustle of their daily lives.

Typology of project : Campus Planning
A Forest Research Institution located in Mangalore, this project explores low cost campus planning and houses the Forest Trainers along with their families and Forest Research Institute students. The site is located in the middle of dense vegetation with scarce surrounding buildings. The project echoes the core philosophy of the institution of preserving vegetation, a gift of prime importance by encapsulating it in the project in a way that is conducive to the wellbeing of users and also helps in passive cooling. The four major points of consideration to design the abode with pecuilar singularities are -

1) The design preserves all the trees on the site and envelopes the ones falling inside the individual blocks which leads to a solid void arrangement. The microclimate dictates the cutouts and fenestrations and helps in creating ample visual transparency that ties the entire site together

2) Traditional housing references in similar cultural and climatic environments. The materials used are exposed bricks for walls and Mangalore tiles for roofing. Jali patterns, inspired from Mughal Architecture used for the walls to flush daylighting in while also allowing cooling and cross ventilation.
3) The zoning is aimed at creating micro-environments. The student hostel

Quarters. A cutout in the middle of student block is shaped accoring to the wind pattern, so that the heart of the campus, zoned for student activities gets ample windflow, while the cutout gets used as a central student plaza.
4) The parking is located at the entrance of the building and service road towards the periphery to give rise to a pedestrianised campus borrowed by the students.

Slope analysis and site study are juxtaposed with the requirements of di erent spaces, user groups, time of the day they utilized etc to create micro-environments that brings out of the best of site. The heart of the student community acts an important puncture that directs wind to the campus site from the valley and o ers users respite from the Mangalore humidity. The Jali, choice of materials and central courtyards aid passive cooling. The site utilizes cut and fill and leaves areas with steep slope untouched. Semester 2, M.Arch, 2023
Guide: Prof. Thomas Hartman
The site is located in New Orleans. The site has a park down south with residential area on the other three sides, dictating the entrance of the project. The programmes are divided into two volumes to induce movement and invoke curiosity in children. The core concept revolves around leveraging the New Orleans’ rain and simulating the experience of sitting under an umbrella with your friends. Existing site features include trees scattered on the site along with a few concentrated on the bottom right. As a part of the proposal, the existing site feature is pushed to the extreme, with the addition of more trees, to create an experience, namely, The Forest.

The Main Entrance channels the user into the roomy Entry Vestibule, concealed from the other spaces and connected to the upper floors by a staircase. The part at the back accommodates Administrative Rooms, Storage, Multipurpose Hall, Collaborative Space, Restaurant and Kitchen. The School is designed such that there are no restricted zones and the students feel a sense of ownership on the building. I thought of leveraging New Orleans’ heavy rains and whimsical weather by creating a puncture for the central glass tube with a canopy flanking from it to simulate the feeling of sitting under an Umbrella with your friends and inducing play of light and shadow in the heart of the building. The other volume sees a double storey Basketball Court with a mezzanine floor with seating for the spectators/students.
The second and third floor are identical in nature for easy way-finding and coherence. The second floor has 6 classrooms, a library and a media room. The transitional space in the heart of the floor, around the central tube doubles up as collaborative space . To prevent the students from being confined to the 4 walls of the class, the Art Class is planned in the heart, with a different ambience. There’s a puncture at the bottom of the level overlooking the busy Entrance Lobby, open to sky, channeling natural light in.
