N the March 2011 issue of The Almondburian we carried a story about the major humanitarian efforts of Old Almondburian John Broadbent and his wife Jean in Ethiopia.Their successful project to bring water and electricity to the remote village of Adi Eblal – for which nearly 80 Old Almondburians raised over £3,000 – has now been recognised by Huddersfield Rotary Club who have awarded them the Paul Harris Fellowship.

“We are very honoured to have received this award,” said John, “but as you would expect our real pleasure has been the fact that these villagers now, for the first time, have the water and electricity that we are able to take for granted.” He added, “ The project would not have been possible without the generosity of Old Almondburians and other Huddersfield organisations and individuals who contributed funds.” Rotary Club president Ian Fillan, said: “We were delighted to present the Paul Harris Fellowship award to Jean and John.“They are thoroughly deserving of the award.”
