BENOY PRESENTS IDEAS FOR HONG KONG NEW CENTRAL HARBOUR FRONT SITE 3

The Benoy urban design team has come up with some ideas for New Central Harbourfront Site 3 in Hong Kong, with a view to sparking conversation and promoting innovative thinking. Site 3 lies between Jardine House and the Central Ferry Piers. At an event arranged by the Urban Land Institute, Benoy unveiled illustrations of three concepts of how the site might look when developed. Benoy joined forces with BuroHappold Engineering to conjure up the concepts, which envisage balancing commercial development of the site with the creation of an accessible public place that will draw people to the waterfront.

Benoy global design director Simon Bee said: “Each solution has different characteristics, but all respond to the need for connectivity, activity and a rich mix of uses within the plot offering an early representation of how Site 3 might be transformed to become a new waterfront destination that is an attractive public place, but also commercially viable. We hope to encourage the design and development community in Hong Kong to push the planning brief to its full potential.”

HASSELL GIVES SINGAPORE A TASTE OF ITS RECIPE FOR PRODUCTIVITY

DESIGN OF LONDON MUSEUM GALLERY MORE THAN JUST A FLIGHT OF FANCY

The builders have turned over to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation its new headquarters in Brussels, designed by SOM+ Assar Architects. The design is based on interlocked fingers, a symbol of unity among NATO members. The design called for the practical yet decorative Renson Linius wall and façade cladding system. Extruded aluminium blades are mounted invisibly on vertical supports, giving a sober appearance. Vertical and horizontal sun protection blocks with new Icarus shield-shaped blades were specially developed by Renson for the staff centre of the new NATO HQ. The design is in keeping with the sober look of the building. And Renson Icarus Plano blades mounted on loggia frames provide dynamic protection from the sun to make the climate inside the southern guardhouse comfortable.

Mathematics: The Winton Gallery, in the Science Museum in London, is a finalist in the Architects’ Journal Architecture Awards for the best built projects in Britain. The gallery, which opened last December, has already won a RIBA London Award. Mathematics: The Winton Gallery contains artefacts illustrating the role mathematics plays in our lives and tells the stories behind them. In the middle is the Handley Page Gugnunc aeroplane, which was built in 1929 and borne aloft by wings mathematically designed for such aerodynamic efficiency that the aircraft helped persuade the public that air travel was safe. This aeroplane, like the rest of the exhibits, shows how mathematics has a history of solving practical problems. The design of the gallery is inspired by the design of the Handley Page Gugnunc, the layout and lines of the gallery representing the air that would have flowed around the aircraft in flight.

AEDAS ACCENTUATES PAST AND PRESENT IN NEW SHANGHAI LANDMARK CENTRE

DECIBEL TO DESIGN GREEN BREWERY FOR GREENFIELD SITE IN AUSTRALIA

Construction of the Shanghai Landmark Centre, designed by Aedas, is now complete. The development sits on the north bank of Suzhou Creek in Shanghai, looking out over the northern stretch of the Bund and the Huangpu River. It is surrounded by lowrise housing and a number of historical buildings, which gives the area a distinct urban fabric. The need to reflect the qualities of historical Shanghai in a new development and the need to ensure the development is adaptable for as many present and future purposes as possible were the biggest challenges for the designers. In response, the clean lines and rectangular form go well with the surrounding cityscape. The design of the façade is inspired by the traditional Chinese windows in the old buildings nearby. The twin towers of the complex make it seem like a gateway to the Hongkou district. The Shanghai Landmark Centre has a gross floor area of 161,000m2. The complex retreats from south to north, the two towers sitting on the southern side of the site and shops occupying the northern side. An open plaza in the middle has places to eat and drink, and space for outdoor activities. The effect of the whole is to accentuate the history and identity of Shanghai in a new landmark on the skyline along Suzhou Creek.

Australian brewer Broo has chosen Decibel Architecture to design a world-class, stateof-the-art, environmentally sustainable brewery, to be built on a 15ha greenfield site in Ballarat in Victoria. The Decibel plans call for the use of the most advanced building technologies in the construction of the brewery, and the use of environmentally sustainable processes in its operation. Central to the design is the circle motif, found throughout the site: circles like the ripples on the surface of lakes and ponds, bringing to mind the circular dimension of bottles and glasses. Bodies of water will occupy 6ha of the brewery complex and solar panels will take up another 4.8ha, still leaving room for an outdoor space for concerts, expos, markets and other events – a space that can hold 10,000 people. An eyrie 45m above the ground will give all-round views of the brewery complex and Ballarat.

HO CHI MINH’S LANDMARK 81 HALFWAY TO BECOMING ASEAN’S TALLEST TOWER

WING TAI, CSI PROPERTIES WIN JOB OF REDEVELOPING SITE IN CENTRAL

The Urban Renewal Authority in Hong Kong has awarded Wing Tai Properties Ltd and CSI Properties Ltd the task of redeveloping the 2,685m2 Site C of the Peel Street/Graham Street project in Central. On the site will rise a commercial complex comprising offices, a hotel, shops and a public open area, and containing up to 40,275m2 of floor space. The chief executive of Wing Tai Properties, Edward Cheng, said: “Historical buildings such as Tai Kwun and Wing Woo Grocery Shop are part of the rich heritage that permeates Central, a place where memories of all Hong Kong people are rooted. Yet Central is also one of the most modern areas in the city. We are pleased to have won the project, which forms an integral part of a mega-redevelopment initiative in Central that supports the preservation of the heritage and revitalisation of the neighbourhood.”

FOUR EAST ASIAN CITIES COUNTED AMONG THE MOST COMPETITIVE The construction of the Atkins-designed Landmark 81 Tower in Ho Chi Minh City has reached a new milestone by passing 260m in height. It is now the tallest building in the city and will continue to grow for a further 200m until it tops out at 461m, surpassing the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur and becoming the tallest building in Southeast Asia. “As an architect it is very satisfying to see our ideas materialise from our imaginations and the digital realm into actual concrete and glass. It is an even greater privilege when it is a building of such architectural magnitude,” says Ian Milne, Senior Design Director of Atkins Southeast Asia. The tower will dominate the cityscape and helps represent Ho Chi Minh as a city of regional importance. Landmark 81 is one of several towers being built in Vietnam that proclaim the country’s growing global status.

Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Seoul are among the seven most competitive cities in the world, according to a report by real estate consultant JLL and The Business of Cities, an urban development research house. Hong Kong is the sixth-most competitive city, the report says, but political uncertainty and the high cost of property there make the sustainability of its competitiveness questionable. The report says Singapore, which is fourth-most competitive, continues to build its position as a global gateway, with an emphasis on being a smart city. The report lists 10 cities that the compilers consider contenders for places among the seven most competitive. Among the contenders are Beijing, Shanghai and Sydney. But poor air quality and income inequality may hamper government efforts to make cities in Asia more competitive. And military tension in Asia may detract from the competitiveness of its cities, the report says.

LINDEN COMANSA ON SITE IN MONTREAL FOR WORK ON NEW CHAMPLAIN BRIDGE

A Linden Comansa 21LC550 tower crane is working on the construction of the main pylon of the New Champlain Bridge in Montreal. The Signature on the Saint Lawrence Group, formed by SNC-Lavalin, ACS and Hochtief, has been working on the New Champlain Bridge since 2015. The main pylon will be 170m tall, and erecting it called for a Linden Comansa 21LC550. The crane arrived in September and was erected on the deck of the bridge with a height under hook of 67.8m. By the time its work is done, the crane will be 180m tall, measured from the base of the pylon, and 123m tall, measured from the bridge deck. The 21LC550 on site in Montreal has a maximum load capacity of 25 tonnes. Another version is available with maximum load capacity of 20 tonnes. The New Champlain Bridge is expected to be completed next year.

VAN BERKEL’S RAFFLES CITY HANGZHOU HAS EVERY ASPECT OF LIFE COVERED Raffles City in the picturesque eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou is place where people can live, work and enjoy their leisure in a sustainable urban environment. Raffles City Hangzhou is in Qianjiang New Town, near the Qiantang River. Two streamlined towers looking out over the river and the West Lake sit atop a podium and landscaped plaza. It is a mixeduse development, containing facilities available around the clock. The idea was to make it a lively vertical neighbourhood and transport hub. The 60-storey towers contain homes, offices and a Conrad Hotel, and are capped with a helipad. The six-storey podium has 116,000m2 of floor space for shops, restaurants and leisure facilities. It has parking for motor vehicles and is connected by an underground passageway to the subway. The development is laid out on two intersecting figures-of-eight. Positioned on opposite corners, each tower has an urban façade, which frames the urban corner of the site, and a landscape façade, which descends into the inner courtyards at podium level. The architect is Ben van Berkel, the founder and principal architect of the UNStudio practice. “Raffles City Hangzhou will be a point of confluence, a hub for business conduct and a new destination for visitors and residents alike – an all-in-one destination for working, living and leisure in a highly sustainable environment,” he says.

SCHMIDT HAMMER LASSEN REVEALS VISION OF SHANGHAI EAST LIBRARY

Images unveiled by Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects show how the Shanghai East Library will look. The 115,000m2-library will be in the Pudong district, next to the 140ha Century Park, the biggest park in Shanghai. The new library will contain 4.8 million books. It will serve 4 million readers and put on more than 1,200 lectures and other events each year. The reading material will be available on the printed page and on screen. The building will serve as a resource centre, a knowledge exchange centre, a technology experience centre, a think-tank and a forum for international communication. The images of the building show a singular monolithic object floating above the tree canopy of the park. The main library volume will float above two pavilions, which will house a 1,000-seat theatre, space for exhibitions and other events, and a library meant especially for children. It will open out onto a series of landscaped courtyards and gardens. One of the partners in Schmidt Hammer Lassen, Chris Hardie, said: “Throughout the design process we have followed the same goals and beliefs in what we felt the library should be, that we wanted to create a building that focussed on people and create spaces that are interconnected and inclusive.” The library is due to open in 2020.

SWISS PROPERTY, 10 DESIGN AWARDED FOR DUBAI RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT

La Reserve Residences in Dubai has earned a Cityscape Global Award for Swiss Property and 10 DESIGN. The development is part of Dubai Healthcare City Phase 2. It has a gross floor area of about 40,000m2 and contains amenities such as open terraces, outdoor activity areas, walking trails, running tracks, swimming pools, gyms and expansive greenery. A design partner in 10 DESIGN, Ted Givens, said: “Set within a bucolic oasis, a large pool defines the centre of the lush garden, with a jogging loop weaving its way through the landscape. The garden textures are pulled up over the buildings. The terracing is amplified by a series of duplexes that sweep though the centre of the twin towers, forming a glass arc across the facades, symbolising water flowing through the landscape.” Construction is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2019.
