The A Level Foundation is a bespoke, one-year pathway to A Level, for overseas students aged 15 or 16. The curriculum is carefully designed to empower students and prepare them for Sixth Form through intensive English tuition, while fostering and recognising their individual talents and skills.
This programme builds a firm foundation of GCSE qualifications in English, Mathematics and up to four other subjects. In addition, it provides an introduction to teaching and learning in the UK as well as an insight into British culture and history, through enriching studies and visits.
This programme is for students whose academic English is not quite at the required level for mainstream entry to the School, but who wish to gain a strong profile of GCSEs in their areas of specialism, before embarking on their A Levels istudies.
Girls enrolled on the programme will receive 10 lessons a week of English Language tuition, with a focus on speaking, comprehension and understanding, writing, and grammar which will lead to a GCSE in English
These lessons will be delivered by specialists in teaching English as an Additional Language, through the School’s experienced and expert ‘EAL’ team.
Each school week contains 31 lessons of 50 minutes’ duration The remaining 21 lessons will be mainstream classes, taught by our subject specialists
These will lead to GCSE qualifications in Mathematics and your choice of Sciences or the Creative and Performing Arts.
Depending on the interests and skills of the student, they may choose the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Pathway, the Arts Pathway, or a combination of the two
Upon completion of the course, the student will have raised her written and spoken English to a level that will allow her to transfer seamlessly to A Level courses in her chosen area of specialism, ensuring that language is no longer a barrier to her learning
The A Level Foundation programme will not only lead to GCSEs that allow a student to access A Level programmes in her areas of interest, it will also give her the foundation she needs to apply to UK Universities.
Over the course of one academic year, a student will gain the required GCSEs in English and Mathematics, along with GCSE qualifications in the other subjects she chooses to study.
During the year, a student will also receive expert, personalised guidance on her pathway through A Levels and on to University, from our dedicated ‘Futures’ department
The A Level Foundation year is also the ideal opportunity to strengthen a student’s English proficiency through the intensive English Language pathway.
On completion of the year, a student will celebrate her success in her chosen GCSEs, and will feel confident and fully prepared for Sixth Form study
If a student’s English is already near-native fluency (at CERF level C1 or above) the Language pathway will be tailored to her proficiency, and broadened to include both English Literature and English Language GCSEs.
In addition to GCSEs in English and Mathematics, students will study three additional subjects, through one of three pathways If students have a real talent for Maths, they can also complete a Level 2 Certificate (equivalent to a GCSE qualification) in Further Mathematics Each of the pathways below will lead to a GCSE and has a wealth of opportunities for enrichment through visits, events, activities and clubs related to these disciplines Whichever pathway is chosen, students will be able to broaden and deepen their experience through Roedean’s co-curricular programme.

The course is further enhanced by a range of expert speakers; from healthcare professionals to subject specialists, who bring fresh perspectives and real-world relevance to the topics explored.

We believe leadership is about taking initiative, inspiring others, and making a positive contribution to the community
During the A Level Foundation year, students are encouraged to step into leadership through a range of opportunities both within their Houses and across the school
They might support younger students, help to organise events, or take on responsibilities that strengthen the sense of community and teamwork These experiences allow students to develop confidence, communication, and collaboration skills, while learning to lead with empathy and integrity.
By fostering leadership at this stage, we prepare our students to embrace greater responsibility in the Sixth Form and beyond
Pastoral care is at the heart of everything we do at Roedean, underpinning every aspect of school life and ensuring that each student is seen, known and heard, and feels that she truly matter.
We believe that when students feel valued and supported, they are empowered to flourish both academically and personally Our strong and highly experienced pastoral team works seamlessly across the academic and boarding spheres, with Tutors, House staff, Heads of Year and dedicated Pastoral Managers providing a consistent network of care.
This holistic approach means that every girl is known and encouraged as an individual, with her wellbeing and personal development given as much priority as her academic success. By fostering a culture of kindness, respect, and open communication, we equip students with the resilience, confidence, and emotional intelligence to navigate challenges and thrive at school and beyond
At Roedean, wellbeing is not an addition, it is essential, and it lies at the core of the transformative education we provide
Tutors and tutor groups are a central component of pastoral care. Each girl is placed in a small tutor group led by a dedicated Tutor who acts as the first point of contact for both the student and her parents.
Tutors meet regularly with their tutees, offering guidance on academic progress, personal development, and wellbeing They work closely with House staff and teaching colleagues to monitor each girl’s journey through the school, celebrating successes and providing timely support where needed
This personalised approach fosters strong relationships, builds confidence, and ensures that every student feels a sense of belonging and sisterhood within the Roedean community.
During the A Level Foundation year, Tutors and the Head of Year, will play key roles in monitoring and supporting students to ensure they make strong academic progress, while also guiding them through the transition to Sixth Form. Each year, intensive study skills sessions are delivered by a specialist provider, offering valuable strategies to build confidence and prepare effectively for the summer exams.
Maintaining self-belief and motivation during this important year is essential, and regular assemblies and tutor sessions provide opportunities for students to reflect on their successes, recognise the progress they are making, and set themselves ambitious and meaningful targets
With a wide range of clubs, societies, and activities on offer, there is something to spark every passion and empower students to step beyond their comfort zones.
From Music, Drama, and Dance productions to STEM clubs, Debating, Creative Writing, and Art, Roedean students enjoy countless opportunities to explore their talents and discover new passions Sport is equally dynamic, with options ranging from traditional team games to sailing, fencing, yoga, and equestrian pursuits
Many girls choose to take on the Duke of Edinburgh Award, developing resilience, teamwork, and independence through volunteering, physical challenges, focussed skill practice and expeditions.
Others embrace the unique opportunity to join the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) at Lancing, where they cultivate leadership, discipline, and a strong sense of service.
During the A Level Foundation year, students benefit from a rich programme of weekly lectures featuring inspiring guest speakers Alongside these, a myriad of seminars and student-led societies encourage exploration of academic interests beyond the curriculum
Roedean’s commitment to partnerships and community engagement further enhances the co-curricular landscape. Students are encouraged to support local charities, mentor younger pupils in partner schools, and contribute to initiatives with a global impact.
Central to this ethos is the Roedean Diploma, which incorporates activities linked to empowerment, engagement and encouragement
It recognises students’ engagement across co-curricular activities, encouraging them to reflect on their experiences, set ambitious goals, and develop a portfolio of achievements Exceptional commitment and growth are honoured with Distinction, acknowledging their dedication and contribution
This holistic approach reflects Roedean’s “girls first” philosophy, empowering students to build confidence, embrace leadership, and prepare for success in every facet of life beyond school.
The future is full of possibility.
Expert advice to help make the best choices is complemented by mentoring from Roedean alumnae in your chosen field, and a bespoke careers programme that includes a work experience weekend At Roedean, careers and university guidance starts early, so that the students can make informed choices concerning their future direction long before they need to do so.
The students have weekly careers and university guidance as part of Futures Fridays, as well as more detailed sessions as part of their Personal Development Programme.
The Friday ‘working lunches’ provide regular opportunities for students to meet professionals from a range of industries. Students and parents are also able to arrange one-to-one meetings with a member of the Futures team or our independent careers advisor.
