At Roedean, we believe these years are about much more than preparing for GCSEs. They are a time for discovering passions, developing strengths and gaining the confidence to make informed choices. Choosing GCSE subjects is an important milestone, and we encourage every student to strike a balance between the subjects she excels in, those she enjoys most, and the opportunities that will keep future pathways open.

Joining in the GCSE Years

For many girls, Year 9 provides an important bridge between the breadth of the Lower School, the prep school she has come from or an overseas school, and the academic depth of GCSE. Through a carefully designed curriculum, students strengthen their knowledge, develop independent study skills and discover the subjects that inspire them most. Those joining Roedean in Year 9 benefit from either our Standard Entry or the Early Entry Programme (EEP), both of which provide a strong foundation for future success while recognising the individuality of every learner.

Students joining for their GCSEs quickly become part of the Roedean community through carefully planned academic and pastoral support. Individual guidance helps every student settle quickly into school life while preparing for the exciting opportunities and challenges of GCSE study.

Although journeys begin at different points, every Upper School student shares the same destination: developing the knowledge, character and confidence to thrive in the Sixth Form and beyond.

Choosing GCSE subjects is one of the first significant academic decisions students make. Across the Upper School, learning extends beyond the classroom through academic lectures, subject societies, competitions, educational visits and independent research. Students are encouraged not simply to acquire knowledge, but to question, analyse and connect ideas across disciplines, preparing them for Sixth Form, university and the wider world. Learning Support Every girl learns differently, and we are committed to ensuring that every student is able to flourish. Our Learning Support team works closely with students, families and teachers to provide personalised guidance and tailored strategies that build independence, develop independence and enable every girl to achieve her full potential. English as an Additional Language (EAL) For students whose first language is not English, our EAL provision helps them develop the language skills and assurance needed to participate fully in every aspect of school life. Leadership

Roedean Diploma

Leadership is an important part of life at Roedean, and opportunities to develop initiative, responsibility and initiative exist throughout the Upper School. Students can take on a variety of leadership roles, including Charity Representatives, Form Representatives, Sports Captains, and House Captains, learning that leadership is about service, collaboration and making a positive contribution to the school community.

The Upper School Roedean Diploma programme enables students to document their achievements across academic enrichment, leadership, sport, the Arts, community service and personal development project. Those who pursue the Roedean Diploma can be awarded a Distinction for their prowess. It’s a gateway to recognising exceptional dedication, skill growth, and contributions across activities, building new skills and preparing girls to excel in multifaceted areas of life. This approach is a testament to the School’s commitment to a ‘girls first’ education.

Head, Heart, Hand Head, Heart and Hand is Roedean’s distinctive programme for personal development, recognising that education extends far beyond academic study. Through a carefully designed programme of experiences, students explore topics and develop skills that complement their academic learning. They might learn the fundamentals of coding, discover the value of British Sign Language, develop creativity through textiles, build skills through cookery, or begin exploring future career pathways. Music, Drama, and Dance Creativity is at the heart of life at Roedean, and every girl is encouraged to discover her own creative voice. Whether through music, drama or dance, students develop confidence and the ability to express themselves while also experiencing the joy of performing.

Girls can learn individually or as part of a group, with opportunities to take instrumental and singing lessons, participate in choirs, orchestras, dance classes and drama productions, or develop their communication and performance skills through LAMDA. Throughout the year, concerts, performances, showcases and productions provide opportunities for every student to perform, whatever her experience or ability.

House music, drama and dance competitions also bring students together in a spirit of creativity, teamwork and friendly competition. Working across year groups, girls build friendships, celebrate one another’s talents and contribute to the vibrant spirit of their House. Whether discovering a new passion or developing an existing talent, every girl is encouraged to express herself creatively.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards Sport (Years 9 and 10) Sport plays an important role in developing healthy, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a rewarding opportunity for girls to discover new strengths, build lasting friendships, and develop the character and determination that will support them throughout their education and beyond. All Year 9 students participate in the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, an internationally recognised programme that develops resourcefulness, resilience and independence. In Year 10, all girls progress on to the Silver Award. Through volunteering, learning a new skill, improving physical fitness and completing an expedition, students challenge themselves beyond the classroom while developing teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills.

Combined Cadet Force (CCF) (Year 10) Students in Year 10 have the opportunity to join the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) in partnership with Lancing College. Taking place off site, the CCF offers a unique co-educational experience where students work alongside their peers to develop leadership, teamwork and resilience through a varied programme of adventurous training, fieldcraft and practical challenges. It encourages self-discipline and responsibility, while fostering communication, problem-solving and a spirit of service that prepares students for future leadership both in school and beyond.

Co-Curricular Opportunities With more than 100 co-curricular activities to choose from, every student is encouraged to discover new interests while developing existing talents. Whether through sport, music, dance, drama, debating, coding, creative arts or academic societies, to name a few, girls have the opportunity to broaden their horizons, pursue their passions with purpose and build selfbelief through experiences that extend far beyond the classroom.

For example, Geography students undertake fieldwork to investigate physical and human environments, collecting and analysing data that supports their examination coursework and develops practical investigative skills. Across the curriculum, visits to museums, galleries, theatres, universities, laboratories and places of historical, scientific and cultural significance provide valuable opportunities to deepen understanding and inspire future learning. The Coastal Advantage Roedean’s unique location is an integral part of the Upper School experience. Being so close to Brighton gives us even more opportunities to discover new things, while the space around school makes it a really inspiring place to spend your day.

What Her Day Will Look Like Every day in the Lower School is carefully balanced to combine academic learning with creativity, physical activity, friendship and time to explore new interests. The rhythm of the day provides structure while ensuring every girl has opportunities to learn, recharge and develop both inside and beyond the classroom.

The day begins together through tutor time, Assembly or Chapel, creating a shared sense of community before lessons begin. Throughout the day, academic study sits alongside sport, co-curricular activities and moments for reflection, supporting the girls’ wellbeing while helping them develop independence, resilience and a strong sense of belonging. This balanced approach encourages every girl to thrive academically, socially and personally.

There’s always something happening, but the day never feels overwhelming. I might start with tutor time, have lessons in the morning, then spend the afternoon doing a co-curricular activity or catching up with prep. I really like having that mix — you get to focus on your work, but there’s also time to be active, spend time with your friends and enjoy being at school.

Boarding by the Sea Boarding is an integral part of the Roedean experience, where girls are known as individuals, cared for by dedicated house staff and encouraged to grow in self-assurance and independence at a pace that feels right for them.

Each of our four main boarding houses is home to no more than fifty girls, creating a close-knit community where every student feels a genuine sense of belonging. Our vertical boarding structure brings together girls from different year groups, allowing younger boarders to learn from older students while developing friendships that span the whole school.

Every new boarder is welcomed by a dedicated boarding buddy, who helps her settle into house life, introduces her to new friends and supports her through those important first days and weeks, ensuring she quickly feels part of the community.

House staff work closely with parents, tutors, Heads of Year and the wider pastoral team to ensure that every girl is known, supported and encouraged throughout her journey. Together, they nurture each student’s individuality while helping her develop the maturity, resilience and independence to flourish both within the boarding community and beyond.

Boarding Options

Accommodation and Leadership

Roedean offers a range of boarding options to suit every family’s needs and circumstances. Whether choosing full, weekly or flexi boarding, every girl becomes a valued member of her boarding house, with her own bed, dedicated pastoral support and access to the full boarding experience.

Full boarding provides a vibrant seven-day community for girls from across the UK and around the world.

Weekly boarding offers the best of both worlds, allowing girls to enjoy the full school experience during the week while spending weekends at home. For families travelling to and from London, a supervised chaperoned travel service operates on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, providing a convenient and reassuring option. Flexi boarding offers additional flexibility for busy families and is also an excellent introduction to boarding life, allowing girls to experience the friendships, independence and sense of belonging that boarding brings.

Day students can also experience boarding through ad hoc overnight stays, perhaps before an early sports fixture, rehearsals, examinations or simply to spend time with friends. It’s a wonderful opportunity to enjoy House life, develop greater independence and become even more connected to the Roedean community.

By the Upper School, many students enjoy the independence of their own bedroom, providing a comfortable space for study, reflection and relaxation alongside the demands of school life. Occasionally, Year 9s may still share. Welcoming communal areas, including the ODR, comfortable lounges and house kitchens, remain at the heart of each boarding house, where girls come together to socialise, watch films, bake, celebrate birthdays and enjoy time with friends.

As students progress through the Upper School, they are encouraged to take increasing responsibility within their boarding communities. In Year 11, boarders have the opportunity to apply for House Captain roles, supporting younger students, helping to build house spirit and developing valuable leadership skills that prepare them for Sixth Form and beyond.

Boarding has given me the confidence to be more independent. I’ve learnt how to manage my time, balance my studies and still make time for the people and activities I love.

Weekends

Exeats and Half Terms

Weekends provide a welcome balance between organised activities and time to relax. Saturday begins with breakfast in each boarding house, giving girls the opportunity to enjoy a slower start to the day together before sport, private lessons and a varied programme of House activities, including arts and crafts, baking, Just Dance, karaoke, bingo and games evenings. A Friday evening trip to ASDA has become a much-loved tradition, allowing boarders to stock up on favourite treats for the weekend, while a Saturday evening takeaway, enjoyed with the permission of House staff, is another highlight of boarding life.

Roedean remains open during exeat weekends, offering families greater flexibility and reducing the need for additional travel. While some girls choose to spend these weekends with family, guardians or friends, many enjoy staying at school, where boarding life continues as usual with the support of House staff and a programme of activities. At half term, all boarders are required to leave the campus before coming back refreshed for the remainder of the term.

Sunday begins with brunch before girls enjoy organised excursions, visits to Brighton or other activities beyond the campus. Younger boarders take part in regular supervised trips, while older girls enjoy increasing independence appropriate to their age.

Equally important is the opportunity to spend time with friends in the House, watching films, playing games, baking together or simply relaxing in the ODR and communal spaces.

Equally important is the freedom to spend time with friends, relax within the boarding houses or focus on personal interests. As students mature, they are encouraged to develop increasing independence appropriate to their age, learning to balance commitments, manage their own time and make responsible decisions within the supportive structure of boarding life.

Life in the boarding house naturally brings girls from different year groups together, strengthening friendships and reinforcing the strong sense of community that defines boarding at Roedean. By Sunday evening, the Houses come together for their weekly House meetings and time with friends, ensuring every girl feels settled and ready for the week ahead.

Living with girls from different year groups means there’s always someone to encourage you, celebrate your successes or offer advice when you need it. It really does feel like a home from home.

Futures Pathways The Upper School is a time when students begin to look beyond the classroom and consider the many opportunities that lie ahead. Roedean’s Futures Pathways Programme empowers every girl to explore her interests, recognise her strengths and make informed choices about her future with clarity and purpose.

Whether aspiring to study medicine, engineering, the Arts, business or any of the many pathways available beyond school, students are encouraged to think ambitiously while remaining open to new possibilities.

Through a carefully designed programme of careers education, leadership opportunities, volunteering, work experience and weekly Futures sessions, girls develop the knowledge, skills and experiences needed to make thoughtful decisions about their next steps.

Year 9: Exploring Possibilities In Year 9, the focus is on exploration and informed choice. As students prepare to select their GCSE subjects, they are encouraged to consider the subjects they enjoy, where their strengths lie and how these choices may support future aspirations.

Individual guidance from an independent careers adviser, together with the annual Futures Fair and Futures Festival, introduces students to a wide range of professions, higher education opportunities and workplace experiences, helping them understand the many pathways available.

Years 10 and 11: Preparing for What’s Next As students progress through their GCSE studies, the programme becomes increasingly personalised.

Work experience, mentoring and partnerships with professionals all provide valuable insight into different careers and industries, while the Working Lunches programme enables students to meet inspiring professionals, ask questions and learn from their experiences in an informal setting.

By Year 11, students receive tailored support from both Roedean’s Futures team and independent careers advisers as they prepare for Sixth Form. Together, they develop an individual pathway that reflects each student’s strengths, ambitions and aspirations, ensuring they approach the next stage of their education with assurance, perspective and a clear sense of purpose.

For some families, Year 10 is the right time to join Roedean. Places are available subject to availability, and our Admissions team will be delighted to discuss your daughter’s individual circumstances and advise on the opportunities available. Entrance assessments can be arranged throughout the year, allowing families the flexibility to apply when the timing is right for them.

Scholarships and Bursaries Roedean recognises and celebrates exceptional talent, commitment and potential through a range of scholarships. Students joining Year 9 may apply for scholarships across a variety of disciplines, including Academics, Art, Dance, Drama, Music and Sport, providing opportunities to develop their strengths within a supportive and ambitious environment.

As students progress into the Sixth Form, existing scholars continue to hold their scholarships. In addition, all Year 11 students have the opportunity to apply for Sixth Form Scholarships, whether building on their current award or applying for a new scholarship that reflects talents and achievements developed during their time in the Upper School. This enables students to be recognised as they grow, ensuring that emerging strengths and aspirations continue to be celebrated throughout their Roedean journey.

We are equally committed to making a Roedean education accessible to talented girls from a wide range of backgrounds. Means-tested bursaries are available for families whose daughters are joining Year 9 or progressing into the Sixth Form and who would benefit from financial assistance. Students applying for Sixth Form Scholarships in Year 11 may also apply for means-tested bursarial support. Applications for bursaries may be made alongside, or independently of, a scholarship application.
