Roedean Co-Curricular Brochure 25-26

Page 1

R 2 52 6 C O C R R C A L I U R UO E D E A N

A Roedean education is the perfect preparation for 21st century life – the Co-Curriculum is one of the three pillars of life at School, alongside Academic and Pastoral, and together they provide an exciting and invigorating experience. In the 140th year, this genuinely holistic education is a fitting tribute to the ideals of the founding Lawrence sisters:

‘We wish in the first place to give to physical education and outdoor exercise their due place in every girl’s life. Secondly, to train each girl to independence and self-reliance, and with that view to give as much liberty as can be granted with safety. And thirdly, to supply a sound and careful intellectual education to each girl.’

There are over 120 activities available each week: the programme is designed to allow you to develop your existing talents as well as discovering new ones. In Years 7-9, you are required to do at least 5 activities per week, including one each afternoon from Monday to Thursday. In Year 10, you are expected to choose at least 4 per week and at least 3 activities if you are in Years 11-13.

To build a portfolio of experiences, you are strongly encouraged to take part in a range of activities from the 9 different categories:

EXERTION

physical and sporting activities, providing focused performance development, as well as fun exercise and fitness

EXPRESSION

activities which encourage your creativity and self-expression, in a collaborative forum

OUTDOORS

activities which provide opportunities to enjoy the fresh air and our wonderful location

SERVICE

opportunities to undertake activities to help and support others, both in the local area and further afield

PERFORMANCE activities in which you can prepare to perform in Dance, Drama, and Music

SKILLS

these activities allow you to develop specific skills, which will be useful both now and in later life

SOCIETY

activities which provide opportunities to broaden your understanding of our society and the impact of various issues

THINKING

intellectual activities, which allow you to consider wider academic matters beyond those studied in the classroom

STEM academic enrichment in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics

The Co-Curricular programme is complemented by Wild Fridays in Year 7 and 8, as well as HHH (Head, Hands, Heart) throughout Key Stage 3, which help to ensure a varied programme. Students can also have private lessons in a range of sporting activities, musical instruments, dance styles, and LAMDA.

There is a focus, wherever possible, on building a portfolio of skills – although participation in some activities is just for the joy of it, others target the attainment of a certain standard, such as British Sign Language Level 1, and Olympiads and Challenges in a variety of subjects. In addition, there is an expectation that all students in Year 9 take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award, since this qualification is highly-regarded throughout the world. In Year 10, students undertake the Duke of Edinburgh’s Silver Award, and one sixth of the year-group joins the Lancing College Combined Cadet Force contingent.

Roedean students will also be able to record their commitment to a wide range of activities in order to achieve one of the Roedean Diplomas:

• completion of 14 out of the 21 elements will see the award of the Junior Roedean Diploma for students in Years 7-8

• for the Senior Roedean Diploma, those in Years 9-11 must fulfil 12 out of 18 elements

• for the Sixth Form Roedean Diploma, students are required to complete 10 of the 15 elements

These diplomas, all of which can be awarded with Distinction, are designed to recognise and celebrate the impressive range of activities many students take part in during their time at School.

We hope that you enjoy the Co-Curriculum, and that you find it both rewarding and exciting!

Deputy Head: Co-Curriculum and Partnerships
