ANNOUNCEMENTS Coffee and donuts will be available near the entrance to the Exhibit Hall, Building L, on the northeast side of the high school campus and the cafeteria located in Building A. A first aid center will be located in Building H, Room 126. The Jefferson County Health Dept. will have flu shots available on both days at an additional cost. Answers to general questions about the conference or the local community can be obtained at the information table located at the registration area in Building H. New this year in celebration of the 30th year!! Session Trivia Contest! Find the 8 (4 per day) trivia questions in this book. Place your answer on the ballet and place in the session box appropriate for each session at the Trivia Table located in H-building lobby. Thursday’s winners will be announced at the opening session on Friday. Friday’s winners will be announced Friday 3:00p.m. Prizes Awarded!! Organizations will set up stands for food and drink for participants between Building A and F from 10 a.m. to 2:00 both days. The cafeteria in Building A will be available for seating. Enclosed see maps for available parking lots; the closer parking lots will fill early. Parking space on campus is limited. Shuttle service is available from the Park Plaza (located on S. 10th St. behind IGA) to the high school campus on Thursday, Oct. 29 & Friday, Oct. 30. Shuttle pick up from the conference will be in front of Building H; please look for signs. CPDU or CEU labels will be provided at the conclusion of the session. For placement of these labels, see page 78 of the conference program. CPDU labels will also be available at the Exhibit Hall. These are for the use of the individual school districts. Franklin, Tennessee “If I Had A Hammer, Inc.” Opening Program Break-out Sessions: 1 and 2 Break-out Session: 5—Room: 212-H Room: Auditorium D-Bldg. Perry Wilson, founder of If I Had A Hammer, Inc does not believe in learning disabilities; he believes in learning differences. He believes that every child learns in his/her own way and many learn in ways that are not taught in traditional classrooms. As a child, Perry was diagnosed with learning disabilities. Perry became a carpenter and could instantly accomplish complex math problems on the job that he could never solve in the classroom. He founded If I Had A Hammer in 1987, based on the principle that all children can learn with developed programs and products that serve children who are in the greatest need. At present, more than 500,000 students in more than 100 cities across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico have experienced If I Had A Hammer. Perry has personally worked with thousands of children as they learn math and life skills through If I Had A Hammer Houses. This fall, Hammer Green Science will introduce building Green Sustainable Hammer Houses. Hammer also opened with the New York Department of Education last April and he will be partnering with Columbia University to deliver Hammer in NYC. The Center for Environmental Research and Conservation at Columbia will be helping with Hammer Green Science. Perry has been a featured speaker at universities and national education conventions. He has built the Hammer House with four state governors and hundreds of middle school classes. Perry has also worked with Fortune 500 companies, universities, and museums to create community outreach programs for their organizations. If I Had A Hammer was featured as one of the top new educational programs in the country by The New York Times, and has had extensive media coverage from The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and CNN.

Denver, Colorado “Positively Humor..” Opening Program “Learning and Laughter: Making the Connection” Break Out Double Session: 5—6 “Diversity: More ALike Than Different” Room: Gymnasium—E Bldg Craig Zablocki is a nationally known speaker and consultant. He has spoken internationally and in all 50 states. Craig has shared the platform with President George Bush, Al Gore, Tom Peters and others. Craig was the first outside speaker to address the student body at Columbine High School after their tragedy. Craig presents to Fortune 500 companies, legislators, public service and healthcare professionals. He has spoken at college campuses, non-profit service organizations, and victim rights groups. Craig has authored many articles and his upcoming book, Improv 101, gives practical tools to loosen up, become more creative, and live in the moment. Craig has a background in business, teaching in an inner-city school, and performing in a professional improvisational comedy troupe. Using his experiences allows him to speak from a unique perspective. Craig lives in Denver, Colorado, with his son Charles.

Luke Allen Skokie, Illinois

Luke is a retired teacher who has spent over 33 years in the classroom. He is a member of ICE, Illinois Computing Educators, and has served on the planning committee for the ICE Conference (formally known as The Illinois Technology Conference for Educators). For the past eight years, Luke has helped in recruiting tech staff volunteers, and working with Web 2.0 resources for the conference. Luke has been a conference presenter at ICE, MECC in Minneapolis, IETC in Springfield, TETC in Nashville, METC in St. Louis, eTech Ohio, The Southern Illinois Technology Showcase in Carterville and returns to the Mt. Vernon Conference. Since retirement, Luke keeps himself busy with substitute teaching and managing websites. He enjoys golf, the outdoors, reading, digital photography and, of course," fiddling around with stuff on the computer.” Category: Technology

Dr. Pete Andersen Wayne City, Illinois

Sessions: 1, 2, 5, 6 “How to Micromanage Less and Inspire More Learning in Your Classroom”

Dr. Pete Andersen received his PHD in Perceptual-Motor Learning and Sport Psychology from the University of Toledo, and tested the 1972 U.S. Men’s Olympic swimming team for his dissertation research in personality, task familiarly, and goal setting. He has taught and coached at collegiate and high school levels producing numerous All-Americans, and was a five-time AllAmerican at Indiana University where he earned B.S. and M.S. degrees. From 1980-2000, he left education for business but returned to earn Type 75 certification as an administrator. He retired in 2008 for a new career as an author/speaker/consultant in performance improvement. Dr. Pete has been a speaker at national and international research conference, medical trade shows, and education conferences. He is owner of Trius Publishing, Inc. which will publish his new book, Purposeful Intent: Motivating Your Mind from Within listed on www.Amazon.com and Sports Advisor Features newspaper syndicate. This May, the ISBE approved his administrator academy course: Motivating Student Learning and Achievement Using the Purposeful Intent Method that focuses on The Triad, three skills to learn-teach-lead faculties and in how to inspire greater performance improvement in our students. Susie Bishop is an educational consultant and author of the Eenie Meanie Me children’s book series. She presents workshops with enthusiasm, humor, passion, and “down-to-earth, been-there done that” style. Susie taught school for 32 years with experience at every level. She loves teaching students and values teaching as the number one profession in America. She has received national and state awards for her work in education. Susie lives in Olney with her husband, Paul. They have three children and four grandchildren. Susie returns to the Mt. Vernon Conference as a co-presenter with Butch Lockley for the Thursday Administrator’s Academy. She also brings back to the conference the popular “Love Languages” workshop and a new one. Gary Cates, PhD Mackinaw, Illinois

Session: Friday All Day 5-8 “Response to Intervention: A Framework for Behavior”

Dr. Gary Cates earned his Ph.D. from Mississippi State University and is currently associate professor of psychology at Illinois State University. He also coordinates the Academic Intervention and Consultation Service at the Psychological Services Center at ISU. Dr. Cates is certified as a school psychologist in Illinois and also hold national certification in school psychology. His work in Illinois (Eastern Illinois University and Illinois State University), Georgia (Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Marcus and Kennedy Krieger Institutes), and Mississippi (school psychologist) spans a spectrum of children from low incidence to gifted. His current consultation work primarily focuses on the implementation and evaluation of Response to Intervention models with strong emphasis on data based decision making. He is currently working with numerous schools in Missouri and Illinois in training staff to implement and sustain response to intervention models and intervention programs. Ruth Cormier Arlington Hts., Illinois

Ruth Cormier is an experienced primary teacher and consultant. She presents through the Midwest to numerous early childhood organizations, colleges and school districts and has been a consultant to World Book Publications. Mrs. Cormier has for many years been a presenter and featured speaker at the Illinois State Kindergarten Conference. She is active in the educational environment, working closely with teachers and students in today’s classrooms. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature from Edgecliff College and a Bachelor of Science and Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Cincinnati. Sabra Culp, a native of central Illinois, has retired as a sixth grade teacher at Mattoon Middle School. She has been an educator for 30 years and has taught grades 2-8. She has also worked in technology at Lake Land College and has been a cooperating teacher of student teachers and block students from Eastern Illinois University. Sabra is a certified Nature Quest Instructor and has worked with all ages of young people in after school science programs and has taught in the Lake Land College Summer College for Kids. Recently, Sabra was awarded the regional “Education is the Key Award.” Sabra has been a featured speaker for the Mt. Vernon Conference since 1996. Category: Math

Jane Dickerson Sanders Mt. Vernon, Illinois

Double Session: 5-6 “Get Gender Smart! Improving Workplace Communication Between Men and Women”

With Fortune 500 clients nationwide, Jane Dickerson Sanders is one of the country's most renowned experts on gender communication and the recruiting, retention and advancement of women. She is a consultant, speaker, facilitator, and a coach who helps companies create inclusive GenderSmart cultures for both men and women of all ages. Jane has 17 years of corporate experience in sales and marketing and over 16 years as president of her own successful company. Her academic background is in business, communication, and psychology, including an MBA from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Jane is author of GenderSmart: Solving The Communication Puzzle Between Men and Women, which is available at www.janesanders.com . She is currently writing a book on recruiting and retention. Honorable Melissa Drew Benton, Illinois

Session: 5 “JUVENILE COURT—Procedures, New Directions and Hot Topics”

A graduate of Southern Illinois University and Southern Illinois University School of Law, Judge Melissa Drew began her legal career as an attorney with Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. During her tenure with Land of Lincoln, Melissa represented hundreds of clients throughout southern Illinois who would not have otherwise had legal representation, focusing extensively on families, children, and victims of domestic violence. Melissa has also worked in the private sector as an attorney and partner in the law firm of Drew & Drew, P.C., in Benton, alongside her husband, Bryan Drew, and father-in-law, John Drew. In 2006, Judge Drew was elected by the voters of the Second Judicial Circuit which is comprised of twelve counties in southern Illinois to the position of Circuit Judge. She is the first female to have ever been elected to that circuitwide position. In addition to her other caseloads, Judge Drew presides over a juvenile court docket that consist of juvenile delinquency cases, as well as juvenile abuse, neglect, and dependency cases. Judge Drew believes in working closely with educators in our juvenile court system as they are so integrally involved in the lives of our children. Judge Drew resides in Franklin County with her husband and two daughters. Category: Juvenile Court

Foster, Honorable Tom Ridgeway, Illinois

Session: 5 “JUVENILE COURT—Procedures, New Directions and Hot Topics”

Judge Tom Foster graduated magna cum laude from the University of Illinois College of Law in May, 1988. In November, 1988, at age 26, Judge Foster was elected State’s Attorney in Gallatin County, and served until 1992, when he entered private practice in Harrisburg, Illinois. While in private practice, Judge Foster engaged primarily in civil trial work representing individuals, business entities and governmental entities in tort and contract litigation cases. As a practicing attorney, Judge Foster tried numerous jury cases throughout southern Illinois and handled dozens of appeals to the state and federal appellate courts. In 2004, Judge Foster was again elected state’s attorney in Gallatin County where he served until 2008 when he was elected from Gallatin County to a six year term as Circuit Judge for the Second Judicial Circuit of Illinois. He currently presides over juvenile court cases involving neglected and abused children. He believes that in order to better serve children who are in the court system, there must be greater communication between educators and the courts. Category: Juvenile Court

Ann Garrett Mt. Vernon, Illinois

Ann Garrett has presented at the Mt. Vernon Conference for several years. Born in southern Illinois, she has taught in the public school system for forty years as a special education teacher, gifted teacher, elementary teacher, middle school language arts teacher, public and high school librarian, high school and community college English teacher, high school department chair, and, currently, a language arts methods teacher at Southern Illinois University – Carbondale and part-time librarian at Mt. Vernon Township High School. Garrett is a National Board Certified Teacher in English/language arts. Besides her elementary, secondary, special education, library, and administrative endorsements, Garrett is also a certified school counselor and has English language learner endorsement. This past summer she was a fellow in the National Writing Project at Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville. This year’s sessions include a school librarians’ round table and information about National Board Certification. Category: National Board Certification/Librarians Round Table

Don Garrett Carmi, Illinois

Double Session: 5-6 “Are You Already Doing RTI and Academic Interventions?”

Don Garrett graduated from Murray University in 1969 with a B.S. in chemistry and in 1971 with an M.A. in teaching science. He also acquired over 60 hours in PLS classes, counseling, administration, and teacher education courses. In the past 20 years, Don has trained over 4,000 teachers in PLS master’s level courses. The majority of those courses were/are held in Illinois and Indiana, but are also taught in Florida, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania. He retired from Carmi White County High School in May of 2005. While at the high school teaching chemistry, he worked with another teacher to co-develop and instruct a community-oriented, technology based, live event high school class. Don was recognized as a Master Teacher in 1984 by the Governor of Illinois. In 1996, the local Kiwanis Club honored him as “Teacher of the Year.” Category: RTI/Student Interventions

Lillian Polus Gerstner Skokie, Illinois

Sessions: 1, 3, 5, 7 “From Generation to Generation: My Parents and the Holocaust” Sessions: 2, 6 “Teaching the Holocaust & Genocide: Classroom Resources”

Lillian Polus Gerstner is the daughter of Holocaust survivors. From 1991 through 2008, she oversaw operations and programming for the Holocaust Memorial Foundation of Illinois in its Main Street facility in Skokie. With the opening of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in April 2009, she had undertaken a new role as Director of Special Projects, which embraces carrying out a wide spectrum of educational, remembrance and public programs. Ms. Gerstner received her undergraduate degree in theatre and speech education from Northwestern University. She has more than 25 years of teaching experience and has been acknowledged in such international publications as Holocaust and Genocide Studies for her grade appropriate bibliography and videography of Holocaust materials for students. In addition, Ms. Gerstner has served as advisor and director of Holocaust Expression Theatre, an activity of the Great Midwest Region B’nai B’rith Youth Organization, through which she has helped high school students develop and perform dramatic Holocaust related material. Recent participation in international programs conducted by the March of the Living and Action Reconciliation/Service for Peace included traveling to Poland, Israel and Germany. These journeys have contributed to Ms. Gerstner’s work on a biography of her mother’s wartime experiences in Berlin, and have added greater depth to the knowledge she shares with students of all ages. Ron Glodoski Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Sessions: 1, 5 “The Real Deal on Crime, Drugs & Easy Money” Sessions: 3, 7 “Motivating Unmotivated Students” Ron Glodoski speaks from the heart of real life experiences. A featured expert on The Sally Jesse Raphael Show, he offers a fresh new perspective on how to effectively connect with kids. His personal triumph over abuse issues, a traumatic brain injury and learning disabilities provides practical solutions to the challenges confronting our youth today. The authenticity of Ron’s message is embodied in his own life on the streets. The choice to change his life led Ron on a path of personal growth and transformation. Ron expanded his home-based company to a multi-million dollar business that provided meaningful employment for 33 people. His life is undeniable proof that even the kids society labels at-risk can become healthy, productive members of their communities. C.W. “Chuck” Hamilton Carterville, Illinois

Sessions: 2, 3, 6, 7 “Understanding Transition Services Under IDEA: Do What?”

C.W. is the Director of Tri-County Special Education Joint Agreement based out of Murphysboro, Illinois. He has over 33 years of practical hands-on experience working in poverty programs, vocational education, and special education. Dr. Hamilton has taught at the high school, community college, and university level. He worked as an Asst. Director for Transition Services as Wabash and Ohio Valley Special Education for over 17 years. During that time frame, Dr. Hamilton worked as a Pre-Vocational Coordinator, Vocational Evaluator, teacher, and supervised a residential facility designed to address vocational and independent living skills of special education students within a nine county area. He also supervised the pre-vocational coordinator staff that developed transition plans for nearly 900 students annually. Dr. Hamilton is considered an expert in special education issues with a specialty area and interest in transition services. Category: Transition Services in Special Education Grade Level: All.

Double Sessions: 1-2; 3-4; 5-6; 7-8 “What Can Horses Teach Teachers?”

Internationally renowned horseman and best selling author Chris Irwin has gained invaluable insights into learning how to learn in his work with therapeutic and personal coaching. He continues to consult with universities on equine assisted learning programs curricula. In his live horse demonstrations, Chris will explain how horse sense and behaviour relate directly to student behaviour. Honest, positive relationships between horse handlers and horses result in positive learning. The opposite is also true. Dr. Jim Rosborg currently serves as Director of Graduate Education at McKendree University and instructor of graduate classes in curriculum and school law. Since his arrival at McKendree, Rosbord has been part of a team that has increased graduate enrollment to over 1,000 students. In June of 2005, Rosborg retired after eleven years as superintendent of the 3,750 Belleville Public School Dist. #118, Belleville, Illinois. He has consistently focused his energy on building a climate of collaboration to benefit all students. Under Rosborg’s leadership, Belleville #118 has some of the highest district scores in the State of Illinois. In addition, those schools received Golden Spike Awards, and the Northern Illinois University’s Spotlight Awards for their academic achievement. Rosborg himself is a past recipient of the Illinois Master Teacher Award, “Those Who Excel” Award, and “Break the Mold” Award from ISBE, and the 2004 Illinois Superintendent of the Year Award. He also collaborated in writing a textbook with Dr. Max McGee and Mr. Jim Burgett entitle “What Every Superintendent and Principal Needs to Know.” In addition, Rosborg has published articles on dealing with children with AIDS in the classroom and the need to adjust the 2002 No Child Left Behind Act for successful implementation. His basic instruction is focused on literature, reading, and language arts. He is the team leader for his group and coordinates all extra curriculum material for the team. In the evening, Clyde also teaches at Eastern Illinois University in the Middle Level Education Department. As a professor there, he teaches Middle Level Reading Techniques and also a course over basic reading. Mr. Self has been an educator for over twenty-nine years, teaching at various grade levels. He also has experience as an administrator, Mattoon United Way, chair for the district Children's Assistance Program, an adjunct professor and a consultant to the state on various aspects in the field of education. Clyde has been a consultant for businesses and school districts and has given over 1,000 presentations. His speaking engagements have taken him all over the U.S. and he has been recognized as a national speaker. Clyde has received several honors and awards in the field of education and community. Most recently he was a finalist for the Golden Apple Foundation. This year, Clyde was inducted into the Who's Who's of American Teachers for the tenth consecutive time. She counsels and represents public school districts at IEP meetings, due process hearings, medication and student expulsion and residency hearings. She has successfully removed dangerous students from the regular education environment and also prevailed in hearings to defend against parents’ unilateral private placements. “The Implications of Safford v. Redding on Intrusive Student Search Scenarios” On June 25, 2009, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down an 8-1 decision in Safford v. Redding. This decision in part held that the intrusive search of a 13 year old female student for Ibuprofen was inconsistent with the protection afforded under the 4th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and the landmark student search case of New Jersey v. “Superhero Training Camp 2: Utilizing the 40 Developmental Assets for Increased Success” The Search Institute has identified 40 positive experiences and qualities that all of us have the power to bring into the lives of children and youth, which are called developmental assets. Surveys of more than 3 million students reveal that these assets are powerful, predictive influences on behavior and character, especially on issues of drug and alcohol use, violence and teen sexuality. Regardless of gender, ethnic heritage, economic situation or geographic location, developmental assets both promote positive behaviors and attitudes and protect young people from problem behaviors. This workshop builds on the concept of the Superhero Training Camp: Culture Shift and helps teachers and other youth professionals “operationalize” their work through a relationship model of prevention for outstanding outcomes.

“One on One with Steve Morris” To say Steve Morris, the McLeansboro graduate, is a man of many hats is an understatement. Tom will go “One on One” with this multi-talented gentleman. This session will cover his career as an educator, coach, administrator, official, father, and athlete. How did the ex-Fox point guard become one of the top coaches in the area, as a freshman coach for Bobby Brown at Eldorado, as a highly successful girls basketball coach at Woodlawn High School and is currently a top South Seven softball coach at Mt. Vernon Twp. High School? Where was his first high school varsity officiating job, (Wheeler was there), what was it like to officiate at state, when did he move to the NCAA and what stories does he have from the “big time?” Steve’s two sons Matt and Jeff were also outstanding Foxes; Steve will fill us in on where and what his successful sons are doing. Coach Morris is expected to “tell it like it is” to every question that Coach Wheeler throws at him. This may be one of the most interesting sessions of the year!
