Dear IFMSA Friends,

“I was active in IFMSA back in the eighties. Holding the VicePresident for External Affairs position of my NMO, in 1981 I had the chance to attend the GA in Katoomba, Australia.

Meeting people from all over the world together and with such a young spirit for a change was remarkable to my life”.

During the journey around the world I performed at the first half of 2017, I had the chance to meet people that boosted my motivation towards our International Federation for Medical Students. It is with a great pleasure that I invite you to read my official candidature for VicePresident for Capacity Building for the term 2017-2018.

this said, it is important to mention that CB is much more than the workshops itself. CB is about the impact we make on our members’ life. It is about what we do. It is about the work that IFMSA does daily through the actions of our Local/National Officers. People will say I am bias after being SCOPE Director, but believe me: even IFMSA Professional and Research Exchanges are also CB opportunities. When we think about the impact we make on our students, that is the CB we are talking about.

After 4 years of volunteering for IFMSA at National and International level, I was trusted with the position of IFMSA Director on Professional Exchanges for the term 2016-2017. This has been one of the greatest challenges for me and I can assure that I have learned so much from it. From team management, problem solving and a lot more acknowledgement from the functioning of our own Federation, I’ve gained much more than I expected at the first place - especially since I’ve thought I already knew too much.

I attended my Training New Trainers (TNT) workshop at the PreGA in Macedonia 2015. It was a life-changing experience for me, where I met people from all over the world and improved my soft skills. Since then Capacity Building (CB) has been one of the topics that caught the most my attention. While working as SCOPE Regional Assistant for the Americas, I was responsible for the development of the NEO’s Capacity Building Resource Center, being one of the greatest achievements in terms of Capacity Building in SCOPE. This experience lead me to apply to facilitate the Training New Exchange Trainers (TNET) at the PreGA 2016, where I had the opportunity to train the 2nd Generation of Exchange Trainers.

“The greatest memory from that GA in Katoomba, Australia, was to see how young health professionals were engaged with the international politics and how the world is shaped.

At that moment, South Africa was being suspended due to the apartheid regimen”. Said the University of Abuja’s dean.

After hearing what he had to say, I kindly asked for a moment. I took my (broken) cellphone out of my pocket and showed a picture I’ve had received a couple of days before: an Invitation letter to my IFMSA Family to attend the General Assembly that happened in Cape Town, South Africa, back in 1997. Signed by Nelson Mandela. Surprised, the Dean said:: “how great are the Medical Students worldwide”. And yes, we are.

Thank you for taking the time to read my Motivation Letter. After a successful and full of experiences term as SCOPE Director, I believe that I can continue to contribute to our Federation’s Strategic goals with the same passion and devotion. It is important to highlight that I am aware that becoming an EB member requires a lot of dedication and hard work. I am committed to observe the whole picture of all situations with a large-neck and to express my feelings with the largest heart on Earth. Just like a Giraffe does.

Dear IFMSA Friends, It’s with an enormous sense of commitment that I am proud to introduce you to my Plan of Action as Vice-President for Capacity Building for the term 2017-2018. Below, I will present to you the main priorities of my work if elected, and how we are going to achieve them. All in all, I believe that having an well-prepared plan I will be able to manage the main tasks of the position.

1. Our NMOs It is well-known that the VPCB Is responsible for the capacity building of IFMSA, the NMOs, and to provide support to NMOs’ capacity building efforts. Having this said, I would like to stress the main areas that I will work in this topic: •

To support NMOs with the training resources needed for their capacity building activities and to maintain it and up to date. It is very important to ensure that our members are equipped with the necessary resources to deliver their training sessions about IFMSA worldwide, by providing Capacity Building database with high standard materials for Training.I would like to assess the possibility with the Standing Committee Directors to have this openly shared with the NMO Presidents. To be as much approachable as possible to our Members.

Provide Assistance to ensure successful IFMSA Meetings such as Regional/General Assemblies and Sub-Regional Training: After having attended different workshops during my journey as SCOPE Director, I understand that this is one of the most tiring topics for our Officials. To tackle this and to provide as much support, I believe that is important the coordination with the CB IT members. With our efforts we can ensure more quality sessions for all. Also, I will be available to coordinate the evaluation together with Vice-President for Activities.

Ensure high-quality of the NMO Management Sessions. As VPCB, I must be able to provide participants with the necessary skills in order so they can have the best practices on managing our members for their NMOs.

2. Strategy 2017-2020

I would like to stress that my work will be guided by the recently adopted IFMSA Strategy 2017-2020. Following the IFMSA Strategy will give me a clearer direction of the VPCB work.

Including, the CB Strategy (guidelines) will be in line with our IFMSA Strategy aiming to provide as much support to the NMOs’ capacity building.

• Start/continue conversations with Professional and Student Organizations in order to increase the Capacity Building Opportunities in the IFMSA and learning from their perspectives.

• To create more room (either virtually or in presential sessions opportunities) for sharing best practices of NMOs to NMOs. I want to create a safe area where NMOs can share their experiences and successes to learn from others and take example of what they organize in other countries in order to do the same back home.

• I want to continue the work that IFMSA have already done with the Competency Model for TO and ITs. I believe that such initiative can guarantee a powerful impact to the management of our Federation.

• Assess the potential on Delivering Essential skills Online with the future.

• Define a clear framework on how to collaborate with the Alumni and to develop our Institutional Memory. Learn from the past is also very important. Therefore I will make sure to develop strategies so we can improve the memory of our Federation.

3. Team-Work

Together we go further. After reading the reports of my predecessors, it is quite important to notice how fundamental is to have a clear and smooth communication with Officials, Program Coordinators and International Team Members. This will be one of my priorities for my term.

As a member of Executive Board: the work as Executive Board is one of the hardest challenges for the VPCB position. I am committed to attend weekly EB Online Meetings, engage in discussions, and take part in the decision making processes. If needed, I will work on attending face-to-face meetings. Attend and be very involved in TOMs, from its planning to participating.

Support to Standing Committees: as VPCB, I am fully aware about my responsibility to coordinate the work of Standing Committee Directors, as mentioned in the job description for the application for the position (although not included in the bylaws). I will make sure to have an overview of their activities, follow up on their SRT approvals, as well as workshop IOGs and Regulations. Coordination of their Annual Working Plans ensuring the alignment of work is a priority for the start of the term.

I see this as one of the most important topics for my term and a way on how IFMSA can benefit from my work and experience. After being on the perspective of the Standing Committee Director (SCD) position, I understand that I have the skills and knowledge to contribute in this position.

Even so, it is important to know that this will not be a work mainly done by me. Our work as a team will be horizontal and will count with the collaboration from different areas of the IFMSA. From VPE to Regional Directors, from organizing General Assemblies to Sub-Regional Trainings, I am committed to provide support to the all discussions with the SCDs. Program Coordinators: I want to ensure that the Capacity Building also reaches the PCs. Even though I did not work with them directly, I am more than willing to get in touch with the respective PCs and develop strategies on how we can cooperate in the future.

CB International Team: it will be one of my priorities of term. I aim to engage and empower the members of the Capacity Building International Team. The 16/17 CB IT was composed by five Regional, one Strategy and one Training Assistants. By looking and reviewing the work done by its members, I would rather simplify it to a model that I am more used to work on. My plan is to divide our CB Assistants in the five regions of the IFMSA. Afterwards, I plan to count with a General Assistant that will take over the tasks as described below.

As for the initial approach of our Regional Assistants, knowledge about Capacity Building and a very supportive personality is needed. This will be the main task description for Regional Assistants: • Analyzing Capacity Building systems of NMOs; • Assisting NMOs with developing national strategies; • Assisting the NMOs with improving Capacity Building systems or implementing new ones; • Assisting Officials with creating strategic plans for regions, Standing Committees etc.

• Support the Regional Directors with creating regional strategies. The RAs will mostly provide input on content of these strategies; • Support Organizing Committees of international events (SRT and RMs) with providing support and input for realization of training sessions and workshops.

As for the tasks of the Capacity Building General Assistant, this will be mainly merged tasks from both Training and Strategy Assistant. For this position a wide experience on Training is needed (preferably TOT Trainer): • • • • • •

Assisting Officials with follow up on their current strategic and annual working plan; Assisting in creating supporting documents for creating strategic plans (Strategy toolkit, manual) Developing standardized training sessions and workshops (Both soft skill and Standing Committee related); Leading the team for creation of trainer resources (Both soft skill and Standing Committee related); Assisting with the trainers database; Revising the Internal Operating Guidelines or other regulations of Capacity Building workshops (Both soft skill and Standing Committee related).

Important to highlight that this a hard draft, based on my experience at the international level.

Please bear in mind that I am still open to listen from predecessors and to collect the inputs from the NMOs to ensure the good performance of the CB team.
