Churches Outreach Network presents the

“We Care Program�

The We Care program is a program at the Greenville Community Shelter sponsored by Churches Outreach Network.

It is a program geared to helping people who temporarily live inside the shelter, live in the community, and come out of the detention center, obtain the skills they need to better their lives.

It is a four-week program for each group of participants focused on continuing education, Housing services, Legal assistance to help expunge your record, Job placement assistance, Rental Assistance, VA Assistance, Disability assistance, training, and more.

Agencies in the community have partnered with us to offer assistance. They are: Greenville Community Shelter, Pitt Community College, Greenville Housing Authority, Pats, Pitt Department of Social Services, Martin County Community Action, The Joy Soup Kitchen, and Strive.

Regular classes are taught Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30am-12:00pm.

Each person in the program will receive a certificate each week for attending classes. We will also be working with agencies to assist you in finding employment. Lunch is served daily at each class session.

Churches Outreach Network Who We Are Churches Outreach Network (CON) is an organization which was founded in 2007 by Pastor Rodney Coles Sr., when he had a vision to reach out into the community with other faith based leaders and organizations. The vision of Churches Outreach Network is focused on helping the community by collaborating with other organizations. We outreach to places such as soup kitchens, shelters, senior living centers, and the like to provide ministry resources and assistance through CON referral services.

One of our signature programs is The We Care Program, which is run by Churches Outreach Network at the Greenville Community Shelter. We provide a free, four week program, which focuses on helping those who temporarily reside in the shelter or live in the community to get job training, job placement assistance, and housing assistance. Our Children's Ministry program offers our Action Digital Photography and Video club, and What about the Children ministry.

Available throughout the year, the Action Digital club is free to children ages 10 and up. The photography program teaches the basic skills of how to point and shoot a camera as well as how to upload pictures. The video program teaches how to create and edit video broadcasts. Our What about the Children ministry is focused on sharing the gospel towards with basic biblical child’s programs involving DVD’s and workbooks followed by art and crafts. We also do health awareness where we offer training and workshops to the community on nutrition, food literacy, diabetes, healthy weight, prenatal care and other health topics. Our newest ministries are Elderly Touch of Heart ministry, Business Minds and Faith Media Video on Demand. Elderly Touch of Heart is a ministry to help assist elderly/disabled persons, who do not have the day to day assistance of family members, with simple needs. Business Minds coaches businesses in the community by hosting business seminars and trainings. We also offer inclusion in a web-based directory, the Business Minds television broadcast, the Business Minds magazine, and Business Minds e-blast marketing. Faith Media Video on demand services are designed to be a complete solution to your web-related ministry needs. We offer media exposure through traditional broadcast television as well as Christian print publications, Internet radio, Video on Demand and much more.

Churches Outreach Network is known throughout many counties as a result of its many outreach efforts and program services. Message from the Editor-in-Chief It’s a new year, a new day. It is another opportunity for the body of Christ to seek God while He may be found and fulfill the purpose that God has ordained for His children. John 15:16 states that “[y]e have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.” Through this Word, God has given us the prescription for abundant living – a life that not only blesses the individual but others as well – a life that leads to true satisfaction, peace, and joy. Destiny magazine is Churches Outreach Network’s opportunity to inspire, to engage, and to invite you to hold fast the abundant life God has ordained for you and bear the fruit that is so desperately needed today. If not you, who? If not, now when?

Message from the President One of my favorite scriptures in the Bible is Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

As I have written numerous articles for publication in Destiny Magazine, I have meditated on these words. Each of us, as children of God, has a special purpose on this earth. Though simply one out of billions that God chose to create, we are all endowed with the power of an awesome God to do wondrous things in the kingdom. The churches, ministries, and anointed people of God featured in this magazine are all living out their purpose for the glory of God. Featured in this issue, Prophetess Renee Arrington of The Little Willie Center and Minister of Music, Ernest Silver, are just a couple in a long list of chosen vessels.

As the Lord inspired the Prophet Jeremiah to write, God has plans for you too. Do you remember your favorite elementary school teacher who said you were a gifted writer and inspired you to write your first novel a year later? Or the devout pastor who you wanted to be just like and was sure to come to your college graduation— the first one in your generation? Your actions and even your lifestyle can have a tremendous affect beyond your own recognition. The phenomenon commonly known as the Butterfly Effect describes how an entire weather pattern can start with a single butterfly flapping its wings. Just one person can make all the difference.

I know…the plans… I have ...for you…

“Where did that come from?”

I thought as I turned over in bed, trying to persuade my body to obey my head which knew that if I turned over one more time, I was going to be seriously late for work. It was Friday and those are the absolute hardest days to muster up the motivation to drag my feet out of bed and get ready for the day.

I know… just what you’re going through…

My eyes were still closed but my mind was just waking up to a familiar tune rattling around in my still fogging head--a tune that was so sweet and so reassuring…

I opened my eyes and glanced over at the TV which I, as usual, had left on the night before. I then focused on the radio/alarm clock, ignoring the way too excited talking head shouting from the speakers, and looked at the time.

“Ok, no more time to procrastinate. Time to get up.”

As I swept my feet to the floor and walked over to the sink to brush my teeth, the refrain of the popular Martha Munizzi song, “I Know the Plans,” was on repeat in my head. It is not unusual for me to wake up with a song in my heart, but this time, it was different….this time it wasn’t meant for me.

“All Things…”

When I walked into The Little Willie Center, one of the first things I noticed was the scripture posted on the door…and on the wall…. and on the other wall…

“It is our memory verse,” explained Ms. Renee Arrington, founder of the after-school tutoring and mentoring program. “Each morning the children come together for a morning devotional and review the memory verse.”

The memory verses are apt décor for the beautiful new facility located at 1118 West 5th Street (part of the Lucille W. Gorham Intergenerational Center Complex). A much needed expansion from the old center and current office space located across the street in Attorney Powell’s former home, the two-building facility was acquired through a partnership with the City of Greenville, East Carolina University and Pitt Community College.

The words of the current memory verse, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Phil 4:13),” echoed in the back of my head as I listened to Ms. Arrington re-count how The Little Willie Center was birthed approximately 18 years ago.

“It all started with the restaurant my family owned called ‘The Raven,’ located in the heart of West Greenville,” recounted Ms. Arrington.

“A neighborhood child nicknamed ‘Little Willie’ would come many afternoons and hang out with my children who were around the same age. His parents were not available to give supervision after school. They would play video games, eat, and just have a good time.

Soon all his other friends were coming as well. We became their extended family.”

Soon ‘The Raven’ became the hangout for latchkey children who were hungry for the love (and the good food!) that was always in ready supply. The desire to create a safe haven dedicated to West Greenville children without after school supervision took root in Ms. Arrington’s heart and would not let go. Remembering that she could do “all things” through Christ, Ms. Arrington set out on her mission. Upon the advice of community advocate and friend, Barbara Fenner, she completed an application to the United Way and received a one-time venture grant to start The Little Willie Center.

Fast forward a couple of decades and the Center still feel like “home” to countless “Little Willie’s.” Serving a large helping of academic tutoring with a side of life skills development seasoned with plenty of home cooked meals and strong Christian values, the 40 plus kids ages 3-17 that come through the Center each year are blessed with the best. Help of long-time advocates such as East Carolina University, Pitt Community College, and Pitt County Schools along with a host of friends and mentors keep the Center thriving. And who could forget her son, Marvin Arrington, Jr., who has stood by his mother’s side, sacrificing so much to truly nurture and grow the organization. www.destinymag.org

“How do you do it?” I asked after listening to the phenomenal programming the Center provides ranging from entrepreneurship training to health and nutrition.

“I cry a lot!” explained Ms. Arrington emphatically when describing the shoe string budget the Center operates on, consisting of donations and contributions that seem to come straight from heaven.

“There are times when individuals will just walk in and give a donation,” explained Ms. Arrington. “When we pray, God answers our prayers.” These individuals may come to lend a helping hand or deposit a seed into the Center’s fertile ground, but they often leave receiving a blessing of their own.

“The transformative power of God’s love is evident all the time,” declared ordained Prophetess Ms. Arrington. “I am still amazed how people will come and sense the difference.

I have witnessed many give their lives to Christ.”

When talking about God, the CEO of The Little Willie Center, Ms. Arrington affirms that “anything [God] orders, [He] takes care of. This is [His], and [He’s] doing it!”

The Center also works diligently to obtain grant dollars, but still relies heavily on the community to sustain operations. More than anything, it is a blessing to see those she’s helped and those who look like the black and brown children who benefit from the Center lend a helping hand.

Ordained and Destined

The woman who has dedicated almost 20 years to giving back to her community never imagined that this is how her life would have ended up. Born in Norfolk, VA, Ms. Arrington was adopted and raised by a relative who lived in Rocky Mount, NC. God became the center of her joy at a very early age when she was introduced to Him by a neighbor, Ms. Susie Dasher. Ms. Dasher took her to church and started a conversation that would forever change her life.

“You come to a point in your life when you realize that you need supernatural help. When I was a girl about 6 or 7 years old, I remember asking God, “[I]f there is a God, I need you to hear me and let me know that there is a God,” recalled Ms. Arrington. “At that moment, God began to speak in such a supernatural way. I felt His tangible presence. He showed me the angels in heaven, ascending and descending. He even began to show me images of my future which I did not understand then but act as confirmation now. God let me know then that I was a chosen vessel.”

Ms. Arrington went on to graduate from NC A&T State University with a degree in business administration. She had big dreams back then, including going to Paris.

“I still want to go!” she exclaimed with joy at the thought of visiting the famed city.

Nevertheless, she knows and understands that she was ordained to do what she does. She has tried to let it go but to no avail. In all of those instances when she tried to reclaim a past dream or pursue a new quest, she was pulled back into her calling. During her personal trials and triumphs, she even credits the children for keeping her alive.

“I had to cast my cares on God to learn to enjoy this journey,” explained Ms. Arrington. “I didn’t always enjoy it, but I am enjoying it now.”

So when you can’t see what tomorrow holds and yesterday is through, Remember I know, the plans I have for you…

The Man Behind the Music: Reggie Price BY: D. GAYLE HARRIS

Talented entertainer. Accomplished entrepreneur.

Dedicated disciple. A few words cannot describe the life and journey of Mr. Reginald Price, known to his listeners as Reggie Price. He is the evening, drive time personality for WOOW radio station in Greenville, NC. From his days as “Mr. Magic” to his transformation into a manager, promoter, and born again believer, Price was destined to impact the world through his love of music.

It all began as a small child when he would listen to WRAP radio station while his mother worked about the house. He would adjust the large and small radio dials, mesmerized by the voices that floated across the airways. He imitated their tone and cadence with mastery not knowing that he was walking in the shoes of his namesake, a radio DJ his mother had named him after. Born in Norfolk, VA and raised in Elizabeth City, NC, the son of Arlee Griffin and the late Earline Griffin sang in his local church choir and a community choir. He continued to refine his talent as a teenager, listening to the radio while riding in the car, playing in the band all through school.

Price was drawn to music, cutting his teeth with his first professional mentor, O.D. Thompson, known as Papa Sage in Portsmouth, VA. He then moved on to work at the Underground Supper Club in downtown Norfolk, VA where he entertained as a disc jockey for Happy Hour, opening up the night with the sound of Grover Washington’s song, “Mr. Magic.” Fond of the name, “Mr. Magic” eventually became his DJ name. As he toured different clubs, his reputation grew. Dressed in a gold cape with boots and long hair, Price incorporated curtains, colorful lights, and explosions of fire and smoke. He even sang along with the music and became quite a hit for his smooth style and deep voice.

For years he toured, playing in different clubs and venues, building a strong following. He performed with greats like Frankie Stewart (“Soul Ranger”), Milton Bowie (“Cosmic Funk Father”), Chester Benton (“Chester B”), “Mr. Cool,” Bob Fields, Ray Jones, “Winkie the Hit Man,” “Shortie Cool,” “OJ US Funkmaster,” Ervin Sutton (“Mellow Madness”), Jerry White (“Jamming Jammer”), “Tweetie Bird,” “Space Mouse,” “Scooby Doo,” Jack Holmes (“Daddy Jack”), Jimmy Sutton (“Outer Phase”), Leola Dyson, and the infamous Wolfman Jack. Some of his most famous venues were “The Big Apple” (Norfolk, Va), “The Cotton Club” (Norfolk, Va), “The Stallion Club” (Elizabeth City, NC), “Paradise” (Elizabeth City, NC), the American Legion (Elizabeth, NC), “The Hut” (Elizabeth City, NC), “The Bamboo Lounge” (Elizabeth City, NC), “Lee’s Place” ( Jarvisburg, NC), “Nickey’s Place” (Chatonoak, NC), www.destinymag.org

Price loved the crowds and enjoyed entertaining. It was what Reggie was born to do. Nevertheless, God had a greater work for him to do but first he had to get his attention. In 1987, while Price was watching the movie, The Color Purple, the poignant song sequence, “God is Trying to Tell You Something” spoke to a place deep down inside of himself. It was a seed planted that continued to blossom until he stopped playing in the clubs and finally accepted the Lord in 1992. Shortly thereafter, he joined Ebenezer AME Church in Ft. Washington, MD under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Granger Browner, Jr. Price credits Ebenezer for grounding him in spiritual principles. He even drove 4.5 hours for Wednesday night bible study and Sunday service every other week to hear and to study the Word.

He was also strongly influenced by national recording artist and Musical Director Dr. Donald Vails who served in music leadership at Ebenezer.

Some years later, Price moved to Greenville, NC to be closer to his mother, Earline. He credits his mother for inspiring him to do everything he has ever done, including developing a closer relationship with the Lord. He found his spiritual covering at Philippi Church of Christ under the leadership of Bishop Randy B. Royal. It was here in Greenville that he began putting together gospel showcases and turned his love for music into an opportunity to witness to the lost. Using the same method he had become famous for but conveying a different message, Reggie transformed his love for entertaining into a viable means to do the will of God. He also began to promote and to manage gospel artists and, despite original protests to do radio, became the music director and drive time radio announcer for WOOW radio station. He has served in this role for over 20 years. He has also hosted a popular gospel television show entitled, “Video Inspiration,” that was featured on Fox Television Networks.

One with many gifts and talents, the man once known as “Mr. Magic” is fulfilling his purpose in Christ. He has worked with contemporary, traditional, and urban contemporary artists and is most noted for promoting major gospel concerts and plays throughout the world. His talents and pursuit of excellence have won him acclaim by his peers. In 2009, he was nominated as “Male Gospel Radio Announcer of the Year” by President Avetra Jones of the NC Gospel Announcer’s Guild. In 2013, this same organization bestowed upon him the “Award of Excellence” for his work in the industry. On June 17, 2006, Reggie won the Passion for Kingdom Productions (PKP) Award for his gospel promotion talents. Price has shared the stage and promoted people in the gospel such as Dr. Rance Allen, Candace Staton, Lee Williams, The Canton Spirituals, The Mississippi Mass Choir, Bobby Jones, Jeff Majors, the Williams Brothers, Fred Hammond, David Payton (A Good Man is Hard to Find) and the list goes on.

And…God is not through with him yet! He continues to perform at various occasions, including weddings, youth explosions, and other special events. He manages and promotes various artists all to the glory of God. He is proud to have passed on his love for music to his son, D’Angelo Burrus who is recording, producing, and arranging music in the Raleigh, NC area.

Ministry Through the Music Minister Ernest Silver

P O Box 342 l Winterville, NC 28590 l 252-717-1686 Ernest Silver is an anointed voice of inspiration. He serves as Worship Pastor for University Church of God in Greenville, NC, where Rev. Wayne Flora serves as Pastor. He has served as a worship leader for more than 20 years at multicultural ministries here in Greenville and in Raleigh, NC. Silver is well-known throughout the music industry for his wonderful blend of gospel and contemporary music, which has afforded him the opportunity to travel nationally and internationally. A former member of the North Carolina Central University Touring Choir, Silver has travelled to minister the gospel through song in TrinidadTobago and the Dominican Republic. He most recently appeared on WRAL Spiritual Awakening, a gospel program, which airs throughout the state of NC every Sunday morning.

Silver began singing at the age of five in his mother’s senior choir at Plumbline Holy Church in Enfield, NC. His father played the guitar and was the church musician for over 40 years. Growing up in a family of Christian musicians, Silver’s desire to become a minister of music naturally expanded. Silver has heard God’s call echoing in his heart and soul for many years and has answered with his first CD recording of “My Calling.” The CD is a wonderful blend of contemporary and spiritual classics. Silver has recently completed the production of a second CD project, which will be available for distribution later this fall. The project is a great blend of music that reflects Silver’s multicultural experiences of the past few years. The project features several of Silver’s original writings, including the title song, “Faithful Lord,” which is a song Silver wrote after seeing his mother battle with cancer for two years. Silver said his mother taught him what it is like to live with cancer, not die of cancer. His mother’s faithfulness to the Lord and positive attitude inspired the song. His mother died a few years ago and yet Silver said he can still hear the voice of his mother speaking of the faithfulness of God, even as Deuteronomy 3 tells us that God’s mercy is renewed every day, great is His faithfulness.

Save my soul Can’t sleep at night and you wonder why Maybe God is trying to tell you something Crying all night long, something’s gone wrong Maybe God is trying to tell you something Oh, you can’t sleep at night and you sure wonder why Maybe God is trying to tell you something Maybe God is trying to tell you something Maybe God is trying to tell you something The songwriter lets us know that sometimes when things are going wrong it may be possible that God is trying to tell us something. There are many reasons why we may not know that God is speaking to us through our situations. Our mind set may lead us to believe something other than God is speaking to us when things don’t go exactly as we plan them. So many times we find ourselves so busy that we don’t even realize just how busy we are. Have you ever found yourself doing something and shut out everything around you? Have you ever tried talking to someone while they were watching television, and they didn’t answer nor did they respond? We tend to be consumed with so much and we give it our undivided attention, which is what our relationship with the Lord should be like. When it comes to spending time with God we should give Him our undivided attention.

Nothing should interfere or hinder our relationship or our time with God. We should not put anything before God. So as I write to you, I write that you may know that when God speaks we have to be able to hear Him. Yes, He speaks in yet a still small voice. He speaks to us in many ways.

We can learn a lot about God by reading about Him. 2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is God breathed, and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.

Through the word we can find what He expects us to do and the very things that He does not want us to do.

God speaks to us through other people. I am reminded of 2 Samuel 3, when Samuel heard someone calling him and he thought it was Eli, but it was God. In verse 9, Eli told Samuel the next time he hears the voice answer “speak Lord for your servant heareth.” God spoke to Samuel and revealed what He was about to do to Eli and His sons. In the 3rd chapter of Exodus, God spoke to Moses from within a burning bush to let him know that He was going to deliver His people. God uses people to help us get to where He desires us to be. things that we go through lets us know that God is with us. 1 Peter 4:12-13 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

We go through stuff that only God could get us out of. (Amen) Psalm 34:19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but God delivers him out of them all. There is so much I wish to share with you about wanting God to speak to us and us hearing Him. When God speaks to us we need to know just what we should do, when to do it and how we should do it. We may want God to speak to us, but we have got to be in a position to hear from Him. We have to be mindful of what are we doing when God is speaking. If we are busy doing anything and everything, we may not hear God. If we are socializing we definitely may have our ear gates blocked by the words of others. This is one that I was guilty of: busyness. Yes, at one time in my life I was so busy here, busy there. I was busy everywhere. Not a busy body but busy doing everything I thought I needed to do for others (people pleasing). I know now that it is truly about pleasing God. I had to stop saying “there are not enough hours in a day,” because there are more than enough hours to accomplish everything that God wants us to do (when God made everything, He made it good). Sometimes it seems like God even stretches the day for me.

I was not pacing my day correctly. I was trying to do so much that I was neglecting some things that were essential for my walk and growth spiritually. In my busyness (I think I may have made up a word, but I hope you know what I mean) I found out that I was not as close to God as I was in the beginning of my walk. God was speaking to me and I couldn’t hear because my focus was off, my spirit man was exhausted and my physical body was drained. I am so thankful that God gave me a mentor Min. B. Huggins, a woman so full of wisdom and Word and LOVE. See God really does speak through people to get our attention. I was able to get my spirit man charged up and really get busy about my Father’s business and not what others thought I should do. Today I write because God is yet speaking to me so that I can speak to you.

If you want to hear from God, you must first be prepared to listen.

Aretha Franklin

was born March 25, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee, the fourth of five children of a Baptist preacher and a gospel singer. A gifted singer and pianist, Franklin went on tour with her father’s traveling revival show and later went to New York and signed with Columbia records. Over time she released singles that would become classics. She has won 18 Grammys, making her the female artists who has won the second most Grammys of all time and one of the most honored artists in Grammy history. She still continues to perform for various events today.

Early Talent Born Aretha Louise Franklin on March 25, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Baptist preacher Reverend Clarence La Vaughan “C.L.” Franklin, and mother Barbara Siggers Franklin, a gospel singer. The fourth of five children, Franklin’s parents separated by the time she was six; four years later, her mother succumbed to a heart attack. Guided by C.L.’s preaching assignments, the family relocated to Detroit, Michigan. C.L. eventually landed at Detroit’s New Bethel Baptist Church, where he gained national renown as a preacher.

Franklin’s musical gifts became apparent at an early age. Largely self-taught, she was regarded as a child prodigy. A gifted pianist with a powerful voice, Franklin sang in front of her father’s Detroit congregation. By the age of 14, she recorded some of her earliest tracks at the church. She also performed with C.L.’s traveling revival show and, while on tour, she befriended gospel greats such as Mahalia Jackson, Sam Cooke and Clara Ward.

Soul Star Life on the road exposed Franklin to adult behaviors and at the age of 15, she became a mother. Her second child followed two years later. After a brief hiatus she returned to performing, and followed heroes like Cooke and Dinah Washington into pop and blues territory. With her father’s blessing, Franklin traveled to New York in 1960. After being courted by several labels, including Motown and RCA, Aretha signed to Columbia Records.

She released The Great Aretha Franklin for the label that same year.

In 1961, the single “Rock-A-Bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody” hit No. 37 on the pop charts. Franklin had a few top 10 singles on the R&B charts, but they failed to showcase the talent evident in her gospel music. She and new husband-cum-manager Ted White decided a move was in order, and Franklin moved to Atlantic in 1967. Atlantic producer Jerry Wexler immediately shuttled Franklin to the studios at the Florence Alabama Musical Emporium.

Paired with sidemen trained in soul, blues, rock and gospel—including session guitarists Eric Clapton and Duane Allman—Aretha recorded the single “I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You).” In the midst of recording sessions, White quarreled with a member of the backing band, and White and Franklin left abruptly. As the single became a massive top 10 hit, Franklin re-emerged in New York, and was able to complete the partially recorded track, “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man.” Franklin cemented her reign in 1967 and 1968 with a string of hit singles that would become enduring classics. In 1967, the album “I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)” was released. The first song on the album, “Respect,” an empowered cover

of an Otis Redding track, reached No. 1 on both the R&B and pop charts, and won Aretha her first two Grammy awards. She also had top 10 hits with “Baby I Love You,’’ “Think,” “Chain of Fools,’’ “I Say A Little Prayer,” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.”

In 1968, Franklin was enlisted to perform at the funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She paid tribute to her father’s fallen friend with a heartfelt rendition of “Precious Lord.” She also sang at the 1968 Democratic Convention. The following year, she and White divorced. Franklin performed again at the 1972 funeral of Mahalia Jackson. Spurred by Jackson’s passing and a subsequent resurgence of interest in gospel music, Franklin’s 1972 album Amazing Grace sold over two million units, becoming the best-selling gospel album at the time. In 1993, she was invited to sing at the inauguration of Bill Clinton, and in 1994, Franklin was given a lifetime achievement award at the Grammys. Over the next few years, she became the subject of multiple documentaries and tributes.

In 1998, Franklin reprised her former role in Blues Brothers 2000, released the gold-selling “A Rose Is Still A Rose,” and stood in for Luciano Pavarotti, who was too ill to accept his Lifetime Achievement Award. Her rendition of “Nessun Dorma” commanded stellar reviews.

In 2003, Franklin released her final studio album on Arista, So Damn Happy, and left the label to found Aretha Records. Two years later, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and became the second woman ever to be inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame. In 2008, she received her 18th Grammy Award for “Never Gonna Break My Faith”—a collaboration with Mary J. Blige—and was tapped to sing at the 2009 inauguration of President Barack Obama. With her 18th Grammy, she has won the second most Grammys of any female artist, following Alison Krauss. Most recently, Franklin’s released her first album on her own label, A Woman Falling Out of Love, in 2011.

To support her album, Franklin gave several concerts, including a two-night stint at the famed Radio City Music Hall in New York. Both fans and critics were impressed with her performances, in which she showed that the Queen of Soul still reigns supreme.

In her personal life, however, Franklin seemed to be going through some challenging times. She announced that she was getting married to her “forever friend” William “Willie” Wilkerson in January 2012 and they planned to tie the knot in that summer.

Only a short time later, Franklin told the press that the wedding was off. The couple had “decided we were moving a little too fast, and there were a number of things that had not been thought through thoroughly.”

More than a week after breaking off her engagement, Franklin suffered another great personal loss. The death of her goddaughter, Whitney Houston, on February 11, 2012, deeply saddened her. “It’s so stunning and unbelievable,” Franklin wrote on her Facebook page. “My heart goes out to Cissy, her daughter Bobbi Kris, her family and Bobby.”

A HEALTHY SECOND WITH DR. RONNIE: HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE RONNIE LANEY, MD, MPH High blood pressure. It’s what the medical people call “hypertension.”

But what does it really mean? Well, let’s break down the word.

“Tension” describes the amount of strain, or “pressure”, applied to something. “Hyper” means “too much” or “too high.” So, hypertension is too much pressure in your blood vessels. How high is “too high?” A normal blood pressure should be less than 120/80. So what? Over time, this increased force causes damage to the insides of the vessel walls leading to blockages and blood clots. These blockages ultimately reduce blood flow to organs leading to damage or failure (heart attacks, kidney failure, blindness, for example).

According to the American Heart Association, approximately 76 million US adults have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, or 1 in 3 Americans. Many more may have it and not yet know it. High blood pressure is often referred to as the “silent killer” because often there are no symptoms, even though damage is already being done. But if you do have symptoms, and your pressure is elevated above a certain level (>180/110), you may be headed for trouble. These symptoms may start out as headache, shortness of breath, nosebleeds, or feeling anxious (hypertensive urgency). If this situation progresses, untreated, significant organ damage occurs leading to stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, loss of consciousness, or kidney failure (hypertensive emergency).

So what can I do? First, learn about the disease, symptoms, and complications, whether you have the disease or not. Second, get regular check-ups. Current recommendations are regular screenings every 2 years, starting at age 20. The most important thing you can do is to promote healthy lifestyle choices, for you and your loved ones. This is includes eating proper amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables (like the DASH and Mediterranean diets), lower portions of meats and starches, regular physical activity, and cutting out bad habits such as smoking. But, what if I don’t have high blood pressure? You should still follow these practices, as evidence has proven that healthy lifestyle choices can prevent disease as well.

I’d also like to address some common myths and misconceptions about high blood pressure.

Myth 1: High blood pressure runs in my family, so I’m going to get it, and there’s nothing I can do. Not necessarily. Following the healthy lifestyle choices addressed above and the current recommendations can sometimes prevent high blood pressure (and other diseases), despite having a strong family history. Some of this involves genetics (things you can’t control), but a lot of it is lifestyle choices.

Myth 2: I don’t add salt to my food, so I’m okay, right? Nope. Up to 75% of the salt (sodium) in our diets is hidden in foods, mostly processed and preserved foods like tomato products, soups, canned foods, preprepared and frozen foods, and restaurants. Learn to read nutrition labels, looking for words “soda”, “sodium”, or the symbol “Na.” Also, check serving sizes and servings per package.

Myth 3: Kosher salt and sea salt are healthier alternatives to “table salt.” Wrong. Salt is salt. Chemically, kosher, sea salt, and table salt are the same, and contain as much as 40% sodium.

Myth 4: My blood pressure has been good lately, so I can stop taking my medication. Wrong again. Your blood pressure is “good” because you are taking your medication. Sometimes people can discontinue medications if, and only if, lifestyle changes have made a significant difference. Only your healthcare professional can make the decision to discontinue a medication. So, unless you are directed to do so, keep on keeping on.

RELIEF FUND Help The Victims of Hurricane Sandy & Fire Victims Burnt Out of Their Homes Many people have asked what they can do to help the United States & Jamaican Victims of Hurricane Sandy. We have also been asked about how we can assist those individuals who are Fire Victims and have been burnt out of their homes. We have found that the most pressing need is for financial help now.

The Churches Outreach Network has established a Relief Fund due to these absolutely critical needs.

Relief Fund Contributions will be directed to reputable organizations & to individuals who qualify for financial assistance. All Donations are tax deductible.
