A Message from Your Lieutenant Governor

Official May Key Club Division 20 Newsletter Hello Division 20, I hope you have been enjoying your summer so far! I know I have been! I am really looking forward to the next few months. I will be having more Officer Training Conferences, President Council Meetings, and attending other Key Club related events. I will let all of you know the details of these plans once they have been determined. My trip to International Convention is rapidly approaching and I can’t even begin to explain how excited I am. If you follow the New Jersey District of Key Club International on FaceBook and Twitter, you will get updates on different things that take place during the trip as they are actually happening.

International Convention The 69th annual International Convention is quickly approaching. Key Club members from all around the New Jersey District will be leaving on July 1st to fly down to Florida for ICON, where we will be meeting Key Clubbers from all over the world. This will be my first time attending and I am incredibly excited. During the trip, I will be keeping everyone updated via Facebook and Twitter. Afterwards, I will write about the trip in a future newsletter.

Regional Training Conference Recap By Christina Xiao LTG Div 16 On May 20th, Montville High School hosted Spring Regional Training Conferences. At RTCs, officers and general members learned about their positions, the district, and International, as well as many other facets of Key Club.

Couldn’t make it to Montville? Not to worry, there will be another Regional Training Conference in the fall! Remember, attendance at one RTC is mandatory for each officer. General members are encouraged to attend if they are looking to learn more about Key Club or interested in running for a position next year. Advocacy Advocacy by Eric Smuda LTG Div 21 Advocacy is speaking on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves. This year’s advocacy focus will focus on the areas of self-image, anti-bullying and suicide prevention in order to make a difference in these areas.

Why? 30% of teenagers have an eating disorder and 58% have tried to change their body. 90% of kids have been bullied and in 85% of these cases no one intervened. Bullying includes physical, cyber and verbal attacks and social alienation. Over one million teens die of suicide a year; that’s one person every 40 seconds. 20% of teens have considered suicide while 14% have planned a suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death.

The Two Advocacy Seasons Season one started in May will end at Fall Rally. Focus on self/body image. Season two starts at Fall Rally ends at DCON. Focus on anti-bullying and suicide prevention.

How are we going to change this?

SAIL Support. Awareness. Inspire. Lead. Together, through two advocacy seasons we are going to help end these problems. The first step is to support those who you see suffering and be there for them. Secondly, raise awareness by educating your school and community about these problems and statistics through assemblies and days of silence. Inspire others through your actions and the stories of those who have been bullied, suffered from eating disorders or almost lost their life to suicide. Lead the way and take the initiative to help save lives and make a difference.
