OUR MISSION The Rock School develops the whole dancer, enabling students to reach the highest standards of technique and artistry in a nurturing, supportive environment that elevates the art form, the dancer, and the audience.

ABOUT THE ROCK SCHOOL The Rock School for Dance Education is one of the world’s finest pre-professional training institutions. Dancers from around the globe have looked to The School for its world-class pre-professional program, featuring exceptional faculty, individual attention, and a nurturing environment. These are exemplified by the success of The School’s alums for over 60 years.

Graduates have ascended the ranks of premier dance companies worldwide and on Broadway and London’s West End. Rock students continue to receive top honors in the Prix de Lausanne, Youth America Grand Prix, USA International Ballet Competition, Moscow International Ballet Competition, and Berlin Tanzolymp. The faculty includes distinguished dancers, instructors, and choreographers.Today,The Rock School is proud to award annual scholarships of more than $1.2 million.

American and international boarding students find an inviting, comfortable, and safe home living at The Marine Club dormitory across from The Rock’s South Philadelphia location.These resident and commuter students receive both dance training and college preparatory academic education as part of their Rock School experience. The Rock School-West location serves the region’s suburban Mainline communities from West Chester, PA. The two locations collaborate, sharing a unified curriculum, faculty, and joint competition and stage performances. The Rock School operates on a $5.9 million annual budget.

OUR COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY RockReach has engaged K-12 participants from underfunded communities, including Title 1, public, private, and charter schools with few or no art education offerings in Philadelphia and Delaware counties for 22 years. RockReach participants include special needs students and Individualized Education Programs, including students who are non-verbal, have Autism Spectrum Disorder, have mobility impairments, and are blind or low-sight. RockReach enriches these students’ education experience through professional teaching artists who work closely with classroom teachers to understand students’ unique needs and encourage them to explore movement and music in new ways. Structured programs are generally offered for 32 or more weeks each year to every student in a single grade in 11 partner schools. The City Dance scholarship program transitions RockReach students to the school’s professional programming allowing them to find their voice in dance. Additionally, upwards of 3,800 students experience The Rock School’s Classic Nutcracker for free each year through live and virtual presentations.

Dear Friends, It is so lovely to spend an evening with you in support of The Rock School! The past few years have seen us battle a pandemic, navigate economic hard times, and smoothly transition through a leadership change. Thanks to you, we can celebrate the resilience of this incredible and storied institution.

The professional division and dormitory are currently at full capacity, including students from 24 states and nine countries. Fifteen students passed through to the finals of the world’s largest and most prestigious ballet competition,Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP). The 2023 Summer Intensive will be the largest in our history, with students coming from across the U.S. and worldwide.

This year’s Rock graduates dazzled us on the stage and in the classroom. We are proud of their offers to dance with professional companies, including Ballet San Juan, Ballet West, Colorado Ballet, Los Angeles Ballet, Nashville Ballet, and Orlando Ballet. They received acceptance to universities, including Butler University, Indiana University, New York University, and more.

New faculty and staff have enhanced our programs in innovative and successful ways. Our ballet division, under Chief Artistic Officer Melissa Stafford, has a unique curriculum training students with care through an age-appropriate progression.

Etienne Diaz, Rock West Director, has done remarkable work restructuring the school, bringing a renewed ballet program and fiscally-responsible business model. RockReach, under the direction of Anne White, has expanded the area’s most comprehensive dance outreach program to serve the entire second grade in 11 Philadelphia schools, including live drumming lessons and accompaniment. Additionally, Anne and Melissa developed CityDance, a new program to move students in South Philly from RockReach toward our Ballet Division Program with special classes, preparing them for a formal ballet environment.

This year we awarded $1.2 million in student scholarships for financial need and talent.

Through a partnership with YAGP, The Rock School responded to an emergency need for housing and dance training for seven young Ukrainian dancers. We proudly provide them shelter, food, schooling, and world-class dance instruction in a safe environment.

The Rock family’s vision to create a community ballet school training dancers for the world’s stages is a living legacy. Our graduates are professional dancers with American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet, New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, and more.

Hello friends of the Rock School, as the Chairman of School’s Board of Trustees, I am incredibly honored to welcome you to the 2023 Rock School Scholarship Gala on the River.

Since 1963, The Rock School has been recognized for its pre-professional dance training. Currently, The Rock trains over 1,200 students on two campuses in Center City Philadelphia, and in West Chester, PA. The Rock School has a worldwide reputation as a prominent institution for preprofessional dance training. The strength of our faculty & staff, the breadth of our community and public programming, the success of our students in major international competitions, as well as our dancers’ placement in prestigious companies worldwide, will be demonstrated by the amazing talent you are about to see this evening.

I’d like to take a moment to thank the 2023 Gala Committee and the staff of the school for their dedication and support of this outstanding event.

Over the past year our new President & Director, Peter Stark, the staff of the school, and the Board of Trustees have restored this iconic school to a world-class institution operating at its highest level.

We anticipate a truly wonderful world-premiere performance by the school’s highly talented young artists and performers from the Curtis Institute of Music. The original work was created by renowned choreographer Matthew Neenan and Curtis Institute composer Leigha Amick.

2 0 2 3 C O L L A B O R AT I O N This year marks the 15th anniversary of The Rock School/Curtis Institute of Music Artistic Collaboration. This collaboration joins the superior talents of two worldrenowned artists, right here in Philadelphia. The Rock School world premiere ballet is choreographed by award winning choreographer, Matthew Neenan and composed by Curtis Institute of Music Composer, Leigha Amick. The Rock School/ Curtis Institute of Music partnership was the vision of Rock School Founder, the late Dr. Milton Rock under the direction of Bojan Spassoff.

Matthew Neenan Matthew Neenan began his dance training at the Boston Ballet School. He later attended the LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts and the School of American Ballet in New York. From 1994-2007, Neenan danced with the Pennsylvania Ballet and in October 2007, Neenan was named Choreographer in Residence.

Neenan’s choreography has been performed by The New York City Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, The Washington Ballet, Ballet West, Ballet Met, Colorado Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, Juilliard Dance, USC Kaufman, among many others. Awards include National Endowment of the Arts,The Choo San Goh Foundation,The Jerome Robbins NEW Foundation, among others.

In 2005, Neenan co-founded BalletX with fellow dancer Christine Cox. BalletX has toured and performed Neenan’s choreography at The Joyce Theater, NY City Center, Central Park Summerstage, Vail International Dance Festival, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Laguna Dance Festival, Spring to Dance Festival in St. Louis, and internationally in Cali, Colombia and Seoul, Korea.

Leigha Amick Composer Leigha Amick draws inspiration from nature, mathematics, and stories. Her compositions have been performed by ensembles including the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, the Boulder Philharmonic, the Orlando Philharmonic, the Indiana University New Music Ensemble, the Playground Ensemble, NOTUS Contemporary Vocal Ensemble, and the Ars Nova Singers. She has studied at summer programs including the European American Musical Alliance (EAMA) and the IRCAM Contemporary Music Creation and Critique program through CIEE. EAMA awarded her the highest recognition in Counterpoint, Harmony, and Solfège.

In 2022, New Voices Opera premiered Rhiannon’s Condemnation: a one-act chamber opera based on a medieval Welsh legend from The Mabinogion for which Leigha wrote both the libretto and the music.

Amick is an active performer of new music as a violinist and soprano. At Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, she performed with NOTUS under the direction of Dominick DiOrio, and in 2018, she sang in IU Opera and Ballet Theater’s production of The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs. While in Indiana, she studied voice with Judith Malafronte and Julia Bentley.

Amick is currently a graduate student at the Curtis Institute of Music, studying with Amy Beth Kirsten, Jonathan Bailey Holland, Nick DiBerardino, Richard Danielpour, and Steve Mackey. She received her Bachelor of Music in composition with highest distinction from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, completing minors in mathematics and electronic music. At IU, she studied composition with David Dzubay,Aaron Travers, Claude Baker, Sven-David Sandström, and Don Freund. Before college, she studied with Daniel Kellogg and John Drumheller of the University of Colorado Boulder.

ROCKREACH 2022/2023 Hello, my name is Anne White, and it is my honor to serve as the Director of RockReach, The Rock’s in-school and after-school dance and music program working with K-12 students in Philadelphia and the surrounding region. For 23 years, RockReach has continued to celebrate and amplify student’s potential, identity, history, expression, and community through dance and music.

As we wrap up the 22/23 school year, I am thrilled to acknowledge the dedicated, compassionate, knowledgeable, and tireless RockReachTeaching Artists and Musicians. These expert educators are why RockReach continues to be a truly unique and impactful program. We launched this school year with an updated curriculum embracing “UNITY!” to include live percussion accompaniment. Every student now joyfully learns the fundamentals of dance and music-making with bucket drumming!

The effects of the pandemic are still profoundly felt physically, intellectually, and emotionally in our school students, families, and communities. Research proves that the very things essential to dance-music, movement, and social interaction, are crucial to strengthening the body, mind, and soul. The “happiness” hormones dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins are released when humans dance and play music. We are fortunate to witness this natural phenomenon with our RockReach Residency program serving 550 K-12 students in 28 classrooms in 11 partner schools for 32 weeks! Our classroom teachers report how much their students look forward to their weekly RockReach sessions. We are proud to provide inclusive learning to students in regular education and special needs students with Individualized Education Programs, including students who are non-verbal, have Autism Spectrum Disorder, have mobility impairments, and are blind or low-sight.

This school year, RockReach welcomed 900 students and classroom teachers to our sensory-friendly and brand new Classic Nutcracker performance at PennLive Arts in December.

We delivered a virtual viewing experience of this performance to 2,500 students in 100 classrooms in Philadelphia and its surrounding area schools. We also hosted 165 K-1 students for an in-studio performance at The Rock School for our Delaware County school partner, Hilltop Elementary.

The program year will culminate with our Dynamics of Dance event at The Rock School, where all RockReach students will perform a lecture demonstration and final performance for friends and family. Students will also enjoy a performance by Rock School Professional Division dancers and be awarded a personalized Certificate Diploma acknowledging their individual hard work, talent, and persistence.

Finally, we are excited to share a new initiative in a partnership with Universal Institute Charter School offering an 8-week Ballet Fundamentals course taught by Rock School Ballet Division faculty. This initiative is designed to prepare, inform, and support RockReach students and their families who strongly desire to study ballet in our school through RockReach’s City Dance Scholarships. Students are invited to register for classes, are equipped with a dance uniform and ballet shoes at no cost. The Rock Schools’ goal is to welcome and support the immense untapped talent and creativity of our communities’ youth who are systemically left out of high-quality sustainable ballet training.

We cannot wait to see these students move through The Rock’s nurturing curriculum!
