Carjacking results in deadly officer-involved shooting

Rockford – A wild turn of events connected with a Rockford carjacking ended when a SWAT officer shot and killed the suspect Sunday on the city’s west side.

The incident unfolded at around 1:30 p.m., when a 37-year-old woman was approached by the suspect whiles she was next to her van near Stanley Street. The man pushed her out of the way and drove off. The woman’s 8-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son were inside the vehicle when it was stolen.

The victim’s 15-year-old son followed the van on foot as it drove onto Chestnut Street, to Avon and proceeded to Green Street.

“When he got to Chestnut and Avon, he saw the 2-year-old and the 8-year-old standing in the street,” Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea said. “Neither were physically harmed.”

Things didn’t end there. O’Shea said the suspect, identified as 44-year-old Kerry D. Blake Jr., exited the van and ran into a house at 1124 Green St. It was there officers attempted to contact him. Instead of complying, Blake approached police with a metal bar and threw a large sword through the front door.

As police attempted to negotiate with Blake, charges of unlawful restraint and possession of a stolen vehicle were authorized by the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office. At around 8:15 p.m., tactical officers forced their way into the resident to make the arrest.

“During the attempted arrest, the suspect assaulted an officer with a large pole,” O’Shea said. “The officer discharged his firearm, striking the suspect.”

Blake was pronounced dead at the scene.

The injured officer was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The Winnebago/Boone County Integrity Task Force is investigating the incident.

The task force was established in 2011 to investigate incidents of deadly force by area police officers.

“Going forward, the Winnebago/Boone County Integrity Task Force will conduct the investigation,” State’s Attorney Marilyn Hite Ross said. “They were activated last night by Chief O’Shea.”

Commander Sam Thomas will be supervising the investigation while Hite Ross will serve as liaison to the task force.

“Once the investigation is completed, it will be reviewed, and details will be released to the public at that time,” Hite Ross said.

Winnebago/Boone County Integrity Task Force last made headlines when it determined that the deaths of Eddie Patterson and Rockford Officer Jaimie Cox were homicides. Patterson was shot by Cox during a traffic stop in November 2017. Cox died from injuries sustained from being dragged by Patterson’s vehicle.

The formation of the task force followed the death of Mark Anthony Barmore, the 23-year-old black man shot dead by police in the basement of Kingdom Authority International Ministries, 518 N. Court St. on Aug. 24, 2009.

Barmore’s death sparked tension between the African-American community and the Rockford Police Department.

Barmore had outstanding arrest warrant and was being sought for questioning after a woman alleged, he’d threatened to cut her throat with a knife the night before.

Once spotted by white Officers Oda Poole and Stan North, who were advised the suspect may be armed, Barmore fled inside Kingdom Authority, which also operated a daycare in the lower level. Barmore was cornered in a basement boiler room, where daycare staff and children were present nearby. He allegedly tried to wrestle Poole’s gun away, resulting in the use of deadly force. R.

Pursley faces Jan. 10 retrial in 1993 homicide

Rockford – Patrick Pursley will stand trial again in the 1993 death of Andy Ascher.

Pursley was hoping to have the current murder charges against him dismissed after a former Winnebago County prosecutor failed to disclose a piece of evidence in a timely fashion, something his attorneys argued violated his right to a fair trial.

Judge Joe McGraw, however, ruled that the former prosecutor did initially withhold a report regarding a statement by the victim’s mother, who claimed the gun used to kill her son was planted, it was not violation of Pursely’s right to due process under the United States Constitution.

“The court cannot find that the evidence supports that the State’s Attorney’s Office, or the Rockford City Police Department acted in bad faith,” McGraw wrote in his decision.

A bench trial is scheduled for Jan. 10 in front of McGraw.

Pursley was scheduled to stand trial in November, but it was delayed after his lawyers received a bystander report chronicling a conversation between Lois Ascher and former Assistant State’s Attorney Steve Biagi. Ascher told Biagi in April 2017 that a

police officer told that the gun entered into evidence was planted. That report was not immediately turned over defense for several months because the state’s attorney’s office could not locate it. The delay, defense lawyers argued, constituted in violation of Brady v. Maryland, the 1963 Supreme Court decision that requires prosecutors to disclose exculpatory evidence to the defense. As such, defense lawyer Andrew Vail said, charges against Pursley should be dismissed.

Instead of commencing with trial, McGraw granted the defense a chance to argue a motion to dismiss the case.

Lois Ascher took the stand during those hearings and said the remark about the planted gun was made to her late husband and that she did not actually hear anyone make it. Five Rockford officers who worked the Andy Ascher case took the stand and testified that they never told anyone the gun was planted and never spoke to Lois Ascher.

Pursley was convicted and spent 23 years in prison for first-degree murder after jurors relied heavily on an expert’s assurance that the scratches and dents on bullets and shell casings from the crime scene proved they could only have come

from Pursley’s gun. He was granted a new trial in 2017, after a study conducted by the Integrated Ballistic Identification System (IBIS) concluded that the bullets did not come from the weapon the state claimed was used in the crime.

Maintaining his innocence, Pursley represented himself for more than a decade and even helped Illinois legislators to update laws that allowed him retest evidence using the more advanced IBIS system, a tool that was not available at the time of his first trial. Pursley is now represented by Chicago firm Jenner & Block.

“It’s just emotional,” Pursley said. “(I) want it over with but somehow it just keeps going on and on. That’s the best way to put it, I just want it over.”

Prosecutors say they want the case over, too. The end to their means, however, would have Pursley back in prison. The state maintains its position that it was Pursley who approached Andy Ascher while he sat in a car with his girlfriend outside her brother’s Rockford apartment. It was an armed robbery, the state alleges. Ascher repaired trucks for the City of Rockford when he was killed.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The fatal mauling of a zoo intern by a lion that escaped from a locked pen illustrates the need for North Carolina regulators to crack down on unaccredited exhibitors of dangerous animals, animal welfare advocates said Monday.

Alexandra Black, 22, was attacked Sunday while cleaning an animal enclosure with other sta� members. It was at least the 10th instance of an escape or attack by an animal at a privately run North Carolina wildlife facility since 1997, according to the Humane Society.

O�cials said the lion somehow escaped from a nearby pen and killed the recent college graduate just two weeks after she started working at the Conservators Center near Burlington, about 60 miles northwest of Raleigh. Sheri�’s deputies shot and killed the animal before retrieving Black’s body.

Black’s “passion was the zoological industry. ... This person wanted to spend a lifetime around these animals, and I believe that the family was very supportive of that,” said Mindy Stinner, executive director of the facility.

Before deputies fired on the lion, o�cials made several attempts to tranquilize it or hold it at bay with fire hoses, the Caswell County Sheri�’s O�ce said.

Visitors at the center were hustled out of the park, Stinner said.

It was not immediately clear how the lion escaped or whether it got out of the enclosure that was being cleaned.

Sta� said the lion never made it beyond the park’s perimeter fence. The park was closed indefinitely as part of an investigation.

Black, who was from New Palestine, Ind i a n a, g r adu ate d f r om Ind i a n a University in May with a degree in animal behavior. She had also recently worked at Wolf Park in Battleground, Indiana, her family said.

“She was a beautiful young woman who had just started her career, there was a terrible accident, and we are mourning,” relatives said in a statement, adding that “she died following her passion.”

Cara Wellman, director of IU’s Center for the Integrative Study of Animal Behavior, recalled that Black had internships at two wildlife rehabilitation centers and was an undergraduate teaching assistant for

introductory biology.

“She was very energetic and committed to animal behavior and pursuing a career in animal husbandry,” Wellman said.

“This is silly, but what comes to my mind is that she was quiet and sweet. That was my impression of her.”

In a statement Monday, the center said the lion named Matthai was a 14-yearold male born at the center shortly after his mother was placed there following a 2004 confiscation assisted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

No problems were found at t he nonprofit nature center during inspections by the USDA in January 2017 or April 2018, according to government reports. A government inspector counted 16 lions, three tigers and two leopards among 85 total animals during the 2018 site visit.

A 2016 federal tax filing shows the center earned about $711,000 from gifts, grants and contributions while spending about $600,000 operating the center that year. An online public records search indicates the center faced state tax liens totaling thousands of dollars in 2017.

While the center is USDA-licensed, animal welfare advocates note that it’s not accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which requires facilities to meet strict animal safety and security standards.

The Humane Society of the United States has urged North Carolina to go

beyond the USDA licensing standards, arguing that it’s among four states with particularly lax laws on private ownership of dangerous wild animals.

The organization pushed for a 2015 bill to make it illegal to own lions, tigers and other wild carnivores unless a facility was accredited by AZA or met other strict standards. The bill passed the state House but not the Senate.

“The longer North Carolina does nothing as other states continue to pass stricter and stricter laws, North Carolina is going to see people coming into the state with their collections of dangerous wild animals, and the problem is simply going to grow,” Lisa Wathne, the Humane Society’s director of captive wildlife protection, said in an interview.

The center was founded in 1999 as an “educational nonprofit dedicated to providing a specialized home for select carnivore species,” according to its website. The site says it houses 21 species and gets more than 16,000 visitors annually after starting public tours in 2007.

A center spokeswoman, Taylor Sharp, said the facility’s leadership was not available to discuss safety and security Monday. The center acknowledges its lack of AZA accreditation on the site, noting that “facilities with more limited income must carefully choose how to allocate their resources.”

Mattis’ final words from Pentagon: ‘Hold fast’ with allies

WASHINGTON (AP) — Jim Mattis ended one of history’s more turbulent tenures as defense secretary on Monday by re-emphasizing a key difference with President Donald Trump and encouraging Pentagon employees, civilian and military, to “hold fast” in safeguarding the nation.

Mattis, who submitted his resignation on Dec. 20 and was, in effect, fired by Trump three days later, spent the day in his third-floor Pentagon office preparing to hand off his duties at midnight to Deputy Secretary Patrick Shanahan.

Shanahan, a former Boeing executive, will be acting defense secretary until someone is nominated for the post.

In a written farewell message, Mattis urged all employees to “keep the faith in our country and hold fast, alongside our allies, aligned against our foes.” Mattis sees allies, including NATO, Japan and South Korea, as central to U.S. foreign and security policy, a point on which he differed from Trump, who denigrated allies as unworthy freeloaders.

In 711 days as defense secretary, Mattis wrestled with a series of surprise, sometimes sudden and often confusing, decisions by Trump, including a July 2017 presidential tweet saying he would ban transgender people from serving in the military. Mattis also disagreed with Trump’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal. He counted as a victory his persuading Trump to abandon, at least temporarily, his stated instinct to withdraw from Afghanistan. Earlier this month, Trump reversed himself and ordered a partial withdrawal, overriding Mattis’ objections.

Mattis also was set back by Trump’s

tweet Dec. 8 announcing he had picked the Army chief of staff, Gen. Mark Milley, to be the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This not only left the current chairman, Gen. Joseph Dunford, in a lame duck status until his scheduled retirement next fall, but it also marked an unusual rejection of advice from his own secretary of defense. Mattis had recommended Air Force Gen. David Goldfein for the job.

The disagreements accumulated, and when Trump decided to pull U.S. troops out of Syria, Mattis submitted a resignation letter he had written some days earlier. His decision to quit stunned many in the Pentagon and around the world.

Trump himself seemed taken aback, and three days later, he tweeted that Shanahan would replace Mattis on Jan. 1, cutting short Mattis’ announced plan to stay until Feb. 28 to ensure a smooth transition.

When he announced Mattis as his choice to lead the Pentagon shortly after his November 2016 election victory, Trump referred to him by his nickname, “Mad Dog,” suggesting he valued an unpredictable, intimidating approach to defense policy. This turned out not to match the Mattis style, which emphasized respectful collaboration with allies and partners.

In his farewell note, Mattis quoted a one-sentence telegram that President Abraham Lincoln sent to the commander of Union forces, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, on Feb. 1, 1865, in the final weeks of the Civil War. It said: “Let nothing which is transpiring, change, hinder, or delay your military movements, or plans.” On that date, Lincoln signed a joint congressional resolution proposing a constitutional amendment to abolish slavery.

Mattis said he’s confident Pentagon employees will remain “undistracted from our sworn mission to support and defend the Constitution while protecting our way of life.”

Mattis has not said publicly what he intends to do next. He has mused about returning to his roots in Washington state. He was born in Pullman and raised in Richland. He graduated from Central Washington University in 1971 and then entered the Marine Corps, where he began as a second lieutenant and rose to the rank of four-star general.

Mattis is the first retired general to serve as defense secretary since George Marshall in 1950-51. His confirmation by the Senate required passage of legislation overriding a prohibition against former U.S. service members who have been out of uniform fewer than seven years from holding the Defense Department’s top job.

Mattis retired from the Marines in 2013.

David Maxwell, a retired Army colonel who served 30 years in uniform, said the farewell and resignation letters together will “be studied and examined ... for years to come” for lessons in leadership. Maxwell is a senior fellow at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies.

Mattis, 68, has not publicly commented on his reasons for resigning, beyond what he wrote in his resignation letter, in which he expressed pride at having served with the men and women of the Defense Department but did not directly thank

Trump. He wrote that the president has “the right to have a secretary of defense whose views are better aligned with” his.

“My views on treating allies with respect and also being clear-eyed about both malign actors and strategic competitors are strongly held and informed by over four decades of immersion in these issues,” Mattis wrote.

Shanahan, who has been the Pentagon’s No. 2 official since July 19, 2017, had worked for Boeing Co. since 1986. His views on strategic issues such as U.S. alliances and the wars in Afghanistan and Syria are largely unknown to the public. During his Senate confirmation hearing in June 2017, he drew the ire of Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona for equivocating on whether he favored providing defensive weaponry to Ukraine in response to Russian military intervention.

Although he will have the title of acting secretary, Shanahan will hold all the executive and command authorities of a Senate-confirmed secretary, according to his spokesman, Army Lt. Col. Joe Buccino.

It is rare for the Pentagon to be run by an acting secretary; the last was William H. Taft, who served in that capacity for about 60 days in 1989 after President George H.W. Bush’s initial choice to be defense secretary, John Tower, became mired in controversy and ultimately failed to be confirmed by the Senate. Dick Cheney then was nominated and confirmed.

Wall Street closed out a dismal, turbulent year for stocks on a bright note Monday, but still finished 2018 with the worst showing in a decade.

After setting a series of records through the late summer and early fall, major U.S. indexes fell sharply after early October, leaving them all in the red for the year.

The S&P 500 index, the market’s main benchmark, finished the year with a loss of 6.2 percent. The last time the index fell for the year was in 2008 during the financial crisis. The S&P 500 also posted tiny losses in 2011 and 2015, but eked out small gains in both years once dividends were included.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 5.6 percent. The Nasdaq composite sank 12.2 percent.

Major indexes in Europe also ended 2018 in the red. The CAC 40 of France finished the year down 11 percent.

Britain’s FTSE 100 lost 12.5 percent.

Germany’s DAX ended the year in a bear market, down 22 percent from a high in January and 18 percent from the start of the year.

“This has really been a challenging year for investors,” said Jeff Kravetz, regional investment strategist at U.S. Bank Wealth Management. “This was really the year that market volatility returned with a vengeance.”

Wall Street started 2018 strong, buoyed by a growing economy and corporate profits. Stocks climbed to new highs early, shook off a sudden, steep drop by spring and rode a wave of tax cut-juiced corporate earnings growth to another all-time high by September. Then the jitters set in.

Investors grew worried that the testy U.S.-China trade dispute and higher interest rates would slow the economy, hurting corporate profits. A slowing U.S. housing market and forecasts of weaker global growth in 2019 stoked traders’ unease.

In October the market’s gyrations grew more volatile.

The autumn sell-off knocked the benchmark S&P 500 index into a correction, or a drop of 10 percent from its all-time high, for the second time in nine months. A Christmas Eve plunge brought it briefly into bear market territory, or a drop of 20 percent from its peak, before closing just short of the threshold that would have meant the end of the market’s nearly 10-year bull market run.

“For markets to move higher next year, we’re going to have to resolve those

issues,” Kravetz said.

On Monday, the S&P 500 index rose 21.11 points, or 0.9 percent, to 2,506.85.

The Dow gained 265.06 points, or 1.2 percent, to 23,327.46. The Nasdaq added 50.76 points, or 0.8 percent, to 6,635.28.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks picked up 10.64 points, or 0.8 percent, to 1,348.56.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.68 percent from 2.73 percent late Friday. The yield started off the year at 2.41 percent.

Health care stocks paved the way for Monday’s modest gains. The sector ended the year with a 4.7 percent increase, to lead all other sectors in the S&P 500.

Utilities were the only other sector to eke out an annual gain, adding 0.5 percent.

Technology companies, a big driver of the market’s gains before things deteriorated in October, ended the year with a 1.6 percent loss. Three of the five so-called “FAANG” stocks — Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google parent Alphabet — ended 2018 lower. Amazon rose 28.4 percent, while Netflix jumped 39.4 percent.

Energy companies fared the worst, plunging 20.5 percent for the year, as the price of U.S. crude oil tumbled around 40 percent from a four-year peak of $76 a barrel in October.

On Monday, benchmark U.S. crude oil inched up 0.2 percent to settle at $45.41 a barrel in New York. Brent crude, the benchmark for international prices, gained 1.1 percent to $53.80 a barrel in

London.

Trading will be closed Tuesday for New Year’s Day. Investors drew encouragement from a tweet from President Donald Trump on Sunday, in which the president said he had a “long and very good call” with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump added: “Deal is moving along very well. If made, it will be very comprehensive, covering all subjects, areas and points of dispute. Big progress being made.”

Meanwhile, the official Xinhua News Agency cited a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman as saying that “China stands ready to work with the United States to move forward the China-U.S. ties which are underpinned by coordination, cooperation and stability.”

Stocks also got a boost in early December when the U.S. and China agreed to a truce on trade, but then plunged when it was unclear what exactly both sides had agreed upon.

In other trading Monday, the dollar fell to 109.61 yen from 110.41 yen on Friday.

The euro strengthened to $1.1445 from $1.1442.

Gold slipped 0.1 percent to $1,281.30 an ounce and silver gained 0.7 percent to $15.54 an ounce. Copper lost 1.9 percent to $2.63 a pound.

In other energy futures trading, wholesale gasoline slipped 0.2 percent to $1.32 a gallon. Heating oil rose 1 percent to $1.68 a gallon. Natural gas plunged 11 percent to $2.94 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Starting to prune the apple trees

Once you have determined your leader branch and sca�olds combined with your awareness of whether this is a dwarf, semi-dwarf, or regular size apple tree, you’ll now be able to start the pruning process. In most situations, loppers and hand pruners will work fine for the cuts you need to make. Bigger cuts may require a chainsaw. Depending on how many cuts your tree needs, try to clean your tools between cuts using rubbing alcohol. For instance, if the tree needs 10 cuts, you should clean the tools between each of those cuts.

The reason to clean your tools is that disease can spread from higher parts of the tree to lower parts. In addition, you might spread disease from tree to tree. Fireblight is a disease that can be reduced or eliminated by cleaning your tools.

As you are pruning the tree, clean up any debris left over from the growing season. Leaves and fruit should be removed from underneath the tree as Apple Scab, another disease, can overwinter on this debris and cause disease issues during the growing season.

term pruning goals that may include determining replacement branches, thinning, and training. These cuts include dead wood, vertical limbs, water sprouts, crosses, and limbs growing inward/downward. These cuts should be between 30-40 percent of the overall tree. Too much and it may be hard for the tree to recover. Dead wood will be dark black and have exposed bark in most cases. Water sprouts are skinny shoots that grow all over the tree including the base. Crosses are when limbs are crossing each other on the tree, keeping sunlight from getting to these limbs. Limbs that grow inward to the tree are not allowing for sunlight to get to your more productive branches.

Start with these cuts first and go from there. It is recommended to have an apple tree pruning guide too. Pruning needs will vary from tree-to-tree. It will also depend on the type of tree you have as a dwarf and semi-dwarf will allow you to do some limb-training if need be.

Many routes to environmental protection

As our minds are focused on the e�ort to transition to an economy based on energy e�ciency, renewable energy and electrified transportation, other environmental concerns and approaches to protecting our health and that of the planet receive far less attention.

A November article in resilience. org highlighted a new study led by scientists at the Nature Conservancy suggesting natural climate solutions could serve to meet the carbon reduction pledge made by the U.S. under the Paris Agreement. By restoring woodlands and seagrass beds, improving fire management and agricultural practices the actions could serve to meet the remaining carbon reductions needed by 2025.

According to the study, natural forest management and fire management hold the largest potential for meeting our climate mitigation goals. One reforestation e�ort in this area is provided

by The Rock River Trail Initiative. RRTI has been distribution trees for planting along the Rock River Corridor for several years and expects to continue the e�ort this spring.

Another worthwhile initiative covered in the Nature Conservancy study involves agricultural practices such as planting cover crops to sequester carbon in the soil between major crop plantings. Adding biochar to the soil can boost the carbon content of soil as well. Land dedicated to the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) performs valuable ecological benefits.

A third cluster of e�orts involves wetlands with restoring tidal wetlands holding the largest mitigation potential.

Nearly 30 percent of US tidal wetlands are cut o� from the ocean subjecting them to inundation with fresh water.

The fresh water carries oxygen which stimulates microbes active within the soil to increase the amount of methane released to the atmosphere.

Methane releases would be reduced if the wetlands were reconnected to the ocean.

Public support and funding would be necessary for such e�orts to be undertaken. Protecting forests will help to

stabilize the climate while producing oxygen, filtering water and enhancing biodiversity.

Another environmental concern is that of protecting biodiversity.

Across the globe, bird populations are dropping. As reported in studies from Germany, a dramatic loss of 76 percent of flying insects in protected areas within less than 30 years has been accompanied by a similar reduction in bird populations. As reported in a May, 2015, RRT column, bee mortality and “colony collapse” has been occurring with frightening frequency with the disorder a�ecting 40 percent of American hives within the past few years. Neonicotinoid pesticides seem to be the major cause.

Organizations protecting natural areas here have sponsored butterfly studies on their properties to document their presence. A recent study at Sand Ridge Prairie in Ogle County conducted by Dr. Wayne Schenuum documented the presence of a large monarch butterfly population although their total numbers have declined by 97 percent over the past two decades. A wide variety of other butterfly species were also found there.

Studies of insect and bird populations done by experts have been enhanced by volunteer observers. We have had the privilege of being involved in two such surveys this winter. One, known as the Christmas Bird Count, sponsored by the Audubon Society, has been held during the Christmas season for over a century.

Over 70,000 individual observers currently participate. Another survey, conducted by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, covers the five winter months. Both provide valuable historic data.

Not only do these surveys provide public data to support the e�orts of scientists, they can help individual observers become more familiar with local species and more likely to advocate worldwide species protection.

Many routes to environmental protection exist. If we wish, we can all be involved at a level comfortable for us. R.

New year, new episodes

Now that the calendar has rolled over to 2019, you can say goodbye to a December filled with repeats, cheesy holiday specials, and primetime gameshows. Along with a few old favorites returning with new episodes, you’ll soon see an onslaught of brand-new mid-season premieres.

A long-running series I’m always happy to see return is PBS’ Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. This genealogy series traces the ancestry of celebrities, authors, and other luminaries, and Gates shows his storytelling skills by focusing on sharing those ancestors’ stories through the lens of history.

Some of this season’s participants include actors Andy Samberg, S. Epatha Merkerson, Felicity Huffman, Chloe Sevigny, and Kal Penn; author George

R.R. Martin; journalists Ann Curry, Christiane Amanpour, and Lisa Ling; comedians Sarah Silverman, Seth Meyers, and Tig Notaro; there’s even an episode tracing the family histories of three politicians.

One thing I love about Finding Your Roots is the subjects it focuses on aren’t always the most famous or recognizable people, but they’re all accomplished in their fields and their family histories include fascinating characters who lived, and often died, in interesting times. Each episode has a theme or through-line that ties disparate stories together in a thoughtful way. It’s always inspiring and well worth watching.

Later the same night, History launches a new scripted drama, Project Blue Book. The series, set in the 1950s, stars Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) as a professor recruited by the United States Air Force to run a secret operation,

Project Blue Book, that investigates reports of UFOs and other supernatural or extraterrestrial phenomena.

Why would something that sounds like a 1950s version of The X-Files air on History of all networks? Because Project Blue Book actually existed, and all 10 episodes are based on actual investigations that took place in the ‘50s and ‘60s. (TV enthusiasts may also recognize the name from a 1978s series that was one of the inspirations behind The X-Files.)

If genealogy and extraterrestrial shows aren’t your thing, perhaps you’d prefer the adrenaline rush of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s new reality competition series, The Titan Games. As creator, producer, and host, Johnson’s mission with the show is to inspire people to reach their potential by putting them through a series of extreme “tests” of physical and mental

strength and endurance.

Competitors range in age from 20 to 51, and if you need someone to root for, two of the athletes happen to be from Illinois. Jack Kwan, age 20, grew up in River Forest and is currently a college student in Chicago, and Nigeriaborn Covenant Falana, age 21, is also a currently a college student in Chicago.

Why not start the new year off by giving one – or all – of these shows a try? There are worse ways to spend a chilly winter day. R.

Recently a friend was asking me for recommendations on buying a hybrid SUV. I recommended a Lexus if cost were no object. But then I punted and told him that he could start by going to the federal government Environmental Protection Agency’s excellent website: www.fueleconomy.gov to do research on what models have the best fuel economy and pollute the least.

Armed with comparisons among a few models, one can then go online to research reviews of the models of vehicle under consideration. It is as easy as entering the make and model in a Google search then adding the word

“review.” There are a ton of reviews for any given model. Some of the more basic reviews are from Edmunds. The more extensive test drives are found on the car magazine websites such as Car and Driver, Road & Track or Motor Trend.

While a bit more effort is involved, and may take a trip to the library to find it, Consumer Reports always has unbiased reviews that I find useful.

Eventually you will go to a car dealer and drive and compare what you think you may want – new or used.

Having done some research you will be prepared before you go – sales people are often not well informed on vehicle pros/cons and performance. Pricing research ahead of going out to buy can

save you money as well.

I wrote a column about FuelEconomy. gov long ago. So I thought it was time to pay the site a visit again. It is under constant updating and is one of the best things your tax dollars have ever accomplished. After being somewhat overwhelmed by what all is available to read and research on the home page – I clicked on this link for the “Fuel Economy Guide”: https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/pdfs/guides/FEG2018. pdf This pulls up a 58 page PDF document that explains everything about the website. How the testing is done.

How the numbers are derived. What all the little letters and notes mean. There are all the data on each model tested or reported on – you can see them all here. Sorted by category – such as EVs, then broken down into vehicle size/ type sub-categories. Here you can see what all is available in one category/ sub-category and find the most efficient too. For example: under Electric Vehicles (EV) the Kia Soul EV and Chevy Bolt EV are listed as “small station wagons.”

It is a good place to start, but you, like I, will not likely read all 58 pages in one sitting. Other website tools, such as “Find a Car,” allow direct access to models and comparisons, so you don’t really need all of this info to sort through. It is interesting to look at though.

This is an example of the sort of information that is good to know – “Each vehicle listing includes a greenhouse gas (GHG) rating on a scale of 1 (worst) to 10 (best). This rating is a comparison of the tailpipe GHG emissions of the vehicle to those of other vehicles of the same model year.

Highway vehicles account for about 23 percent (1.7 billion tons) of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions each year. The average recent model vehicle causes the release of 6 to 9 tons of GHGs each year.

Switching from a vehicle that gets 20 miles per gallon (MPG) to one that gets 25 MPG can reduce GHG emissions by 1.7 tons per year.”

After a short perusal, I can tell you that the knowledge available on this government website can make you a Mr. Green Car too. Quite literally, everything I know and some things I don’t are here. Every aspect of burning fuel or using electricity in transportation is explained. It is your one-stop spot to become educated on any aspect of conserving fuel, saving money and protecting the environment as it relates to vehicles.

Monday, January 14 Montage of a Dream Deferred - “Montage of a Dream Deferred” by Langston Hughes will be performed by Rockford’s Reader’s Theatre at JustGoods Fair Trade Store, 201 7th St., at 6:30 p.m. Langston Hughes, the distinguished poet and playwright, moved into his first home in his beloved harlem in 1948. This appeared to set off in him a cloudburst of inspiration. The result was a major book of verse, Montage of

a Dream Deferred, a full book-length poem on contemporary Harlem. It is marked by “conflicting changes, sudden nuances, sharp and impudent interjections, broken rhythms, and passages sometimes in the manner of the jazz jam session, sometimes the popular song, punctuated by the riffs, runs, breaks, and disc-tortions of the music of a community in transition.” Other pieces will showcase playwrights Loften Mitchell, Katori Hall, Martin Duberman, Elizabeth Wilder, Alice Childress and Richard Wesley. All reinforce Dr. King’s ideals of freedom and equality for all humanity. Vocal and instrumental music underscore the poetry and monologues. These performances are free and open to the public, and are appropriate for all ages.

Tuesday, January 8 Every Rock Tells a Story - At the Northwest Illinois Audubon monthly meeting, retired Highland Community College professor Steve Simpson will present a program about rocks. Drawing on his 32-year career teaching geology, Steve will tell stories as revealed by rocks. Attendees are encouraged to bring rocks and fossils for “analysis” and discussion. He will also share some of his favorite stories about rocks and their discoveries by careful investigations of geologists. Pearson, author and naturalist, will talk about Rockford native George B. Fell, the founder of Rockford’s Natural Land Institute and a leader in the preservation movement that spawned may groups including The Nature Conservancy, The Illinois Nature Preserves Commission, the Natural Areas Association and the Wild Ones.

Arthur spent 15 years researching George Fell’s life and work for his award-winning biography, Force of Nature: George Fell, Founder of the Natural Areas Movement. This book won an Outstanding Achievement Award for Scholarly Publications from the Illinois State Historical Society. He will guide us through Fell’s journey and his many accomplishments to protect the natural lands we love. Arthur Pearson is the former director of the Chicago Program for the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation where he oversaw the Foundation’s investments in land conservation. He has written about conservation issues for numerous publications. His book will be for sale the night of the presentation at a special price.

The Bears and Eagles are a test of every meaningful and meaningless football cliche

This time a year ago, a confident roster full of leaders, dynamic talents, underdogs, and a courageous coach were preparing to go on a Super Bowl run for the ages. They had the NFL’s best defense led by Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham, a host of balanced offensive playmakers in Zach Ertz and Alshon Jeffery, and were dripping with swagger and team chemistry thanks to head coach Doug Pederson. That team was the Philadelphia Eagles, who ran roughshod through the NFC en route to an upset of the dynastic Tom Brady-Bill Belichick New England Patriots on February’s big stage.

If that construct sounds familiar and hits close to home, it should. A year later, the Bears, who capped off their first season of at least 12 wins since 2006 Sunday, are sitting in the same boat. They have the NFL’s best defense led by Khalil Mack and Akiem Hicks, a host of balanced offensive playmakers in Mitchell Trubisky and Tarik Cohen, and are dripping with swagger and team chemistry thanks to head coach Matt Nagy.

The only thing missing is a Super Bowl at the end of a perilous January.

It’s so incredibly fitting that these two teams, built in the most of similar of fashions from top to bottom, meet this Sunday in the NFC Wild Card Game. While the Eagles have taken dramatic steps back from the formidable 13-win team of yesteryear, they are still a force to be reckoned with and should be respected as such. They were, and have pieces of, what the Bears are now, after all.

The Eagles and Bears, through every relevant facet, are models of what aggressive team building and a friendly organizational culture should exemplify in the modern NFL. They match up well in the trenches and arguably have the best atmospheres established in pro football.

So why on Earth would non-existent cliches of momentum and experience mean anything in the context of Chicago’s first postseason game in almost a decade?

In the lead up to Sunday’s Wild Card Game at Soldier Field, narratives of the Eagles being vested postseason veterans and being the hottest team in football are going to be endlessly espoused as their primary advantages over the Bears. None of it makes much of any sense.

Instead of focusing on the quality of players like Michael Bennett, Fletcher Cox, and Brandon Graham that can make life a living hell for the Chicago offense, it’s the late season three-game winning

streak of the Eagles that curiously matters most. Instead of centering on Jason Kelce, the NFL’s arguable best center leading a solid Philadelphia offensive line against the Bears’ monstrous defensive front, it’s laden experience that apparently leads the way for Philadelphia. Where Nagy and Pederson, two long-time coaching friends that both studied under Kansas City’s Andy Reid, present a quality coaching matchup, it’s instead the entirely fictitious idea of momentum that drives the way.

Which begs the question as to what these narratives supposedly in favor of the Eagles actually mean.

If the Eagles are the hottest team in pro football after closing the 2018 regular season with three straight wins, then what are the Bears, who have lost one game since October? That game, against the Giants in early December, was without Mitchell Trubisky at the helm: who is personally undefeated as a starter since October.

If the Eagles are that much more experienced than the Bears, what were they last year in early January as a roster comprised mostly of guys with zero postseason victories? In last year’s Divisional Round, Philadelphia dispatched the Atlanta Falcons, who had played in the Super Bowl the previous season. Atlanta was certainly far more experienced the Eagles. It didn’t matter. The Eagles were the better team.

If the Eagles have the momentum in their favor, which can’t be tangibly measured by the way, then what is it the Bears possess after stomping out the division rival Vikings when they didn’t have to? Or any host of three, four, and five-game winning streaks they’ve enjoyed over the course of the 2018 season.

If momentum is a relevant concept in the NFL, and again, it isn’t, then what exact advantage do the Eagles have over a Bears team that’s allowed two touchdowns in it’s last four games?

The storylines, all week, leading up to Sunday will be that the Bears should be afraid of the Eagles not because of how solidly their roster is built. Not because of how well-coached they are, just like the Bears are. But because of their past accomplishments and intangibles no one can put a proper price tag on. That’s such a flawed ideal and way of thinking in regards to evaluating football. If the Eagles win on Sunday, they will have outplayed the Bears with their best players playing better than Chicago’s best players, plain and simple. Nothing else.

The playoffs aren’t about momentum

or experience or who goes in riding a wave into January. It’s quite literally, as it is in the regular season, who coaches, plays, and executes better: with the added incentive of sudden death for both participating teams in a defeat. Nothing more, nothing less. To rely on other cliches and underlying storylines that don’t exist muddles the framework of the journey of both teams. To not see that the bigger picture that absolutely nothing has changed in regards to the football being played except for the fact that it is a must-win in every game, is misguided.

If coaches and players themselves prescribed to this mentality, especially the playoff-fresh Bears, no one would ever accomplish anything meaningful in the postseason. The postseason presents the same challenge as any other game, except for the added pressure of elimination.

Treat it as such.

“We’re not going to change things just because we’re in the playoffs now,” Nagy said on Monday The Bears have a potentially special postseason run ahead of them given what they possess on their roster, and how they

fit within the confines of the NFC. They look like a team to be feared, and could be hoisting Nagy on their shoulders in Atlanta in a little over a month.

The Bears also could be one-and-done and or have a short ride because hey, the playoffs are difficult by their very nature.

You’re playing the best the league has to offer every week, and that’s a recipe for disaster based on pure competition. It’s the playoffs, nothing is guaranteed.

Don’t try and sell any other narrative or ideals of football that don’t exist to drum up more meaning for games that don’t need them and already are high intensity. Neither the Eagles or Bears, or anyone associated with them, need extra incentive. The Bears and Nagy in particular understand the moment plenty well enough.
