From the Desk of A. Beyel

Dear Members & Guests,
As we welcome March, don’t forget to set your clocks forward on March 9 for daylight saving time. Longer days mean more sunshine, more golf, and more time to enjoy everything Rockledge Country Club has to offer.
This winter brought some of the coldest temperatures we’ve seen in years, and the course has felt the impact. We are actively addressing five fairways that need extra attention, ensuring they are in the best possible condition for the season ahead. For a detailed update on our cultural practices and course improvements, please refer to Jerry’s letter.
Mark your calendars for the Men’s Club Championship on March 8 and 9. Don’t miss the opportunity to compete and represent your club in one of the most exciting tournaments of the year. Whether you’re playing for the title or just looking to enjoy a great weekend of golf, we encourage all eligible players to sign up and join the competition.
Exciting news for our pickleball players, the court renovations are complete! Thank you for your patience as we enhanced our facilities to create an even better playing experience.
March 2025

Spring is in the air and so is love. We’re thrilled to see a growing interest in weddings at Rockledge Country Club. If you or someone you know is looking for the perfect venue for a wedding, corporate lunch, or special event, please spread the word. We would love to help make it unforgettable.
On a personal note, I’m not sure if I’ve had the chance to introduce my daughter, Kaylee. She will be leading our marketing efforts at Rockledge Country Club. Kaylee brings over 10 years of marketing experience to the team and is already making an impact. Even more exciting, she is expecting her first child, my ninth grandchild, it’s a girl! We couldn’t be happier for her and our growing family.
Looking forward to a fantastic month ahead. See you on the course.
All my best,

Andrea Beyel, GM

COURSE MAINTENCE UPDATE
As we embark on a new month, let’s all look back and reflect on the winter golf season. The holiday months of November and December were relatively nice with mostly seasonal weather. January was brutal with more cold days in a row than we normally get. February came along and the weather became more seasonal once again.
With all those cold days in January, we experienced some negative effects. As I have mentioned in many previous newsletters, Bermudagrass is a warm season variety that is not fond of cool conditions. When it gets cold the Bermuda goes into dormancy or semi-dormancy. Either way, it stops growing. This is a protective measure of the grass. Many of you have noticed the thinning of many of our fairways recently. Cold weather, turf variety, weed eradication and traffic are the primary causes of this.
Weed eradication refers to our aggressive weed removal program we initiated this past spring. It will take some time for Bermudagrass to fill the voids where the weeds once existed. I mention turf variety because we have various varieties of bermudagrass in our fairways. Some areas in a fairway look completely unaffected while areas right next to it will be thin and worn out.
This is due to the different varieties ability to handle the stresses of the cold weather and the excess traffic. I think most would agree that the variety of Tiftuf Bermuda we installed last summer on holes 5,7,10 and 12 has held up quite nicely through the winter months.

The reason those fairways were chosen to be renovated is because they were the worst ones we had at the time. We have a few more that have risen to the top now, and here is what we intend to do to fix the issues. We will be spike aerifying all fairways in early March before our pre-emergent weed application. Weak fairway areas will be fertilized with ammonium sulphate. The entire course will be fertilized in late March with a complete fertilizer. In late April to early May, we will be core aerifying all fairways. Then we will core aerify again in late summer.
Our goal is to try to create a healthy and vibrant turf that will better withstand the stresses of the cooler season. I expect a very quick response by our fairways once we return to longer days (sunlight) and warmer days and nights. These are the conditions the Bermuda thrives in.
The greens have held up quite nicely and have performed very well. We are showing quite a few scalp areas on some of the old hole plugs. This occurred last year around this same time, and we were able to grow out of it quite easily. I expect the same this year.
Yours in Turf,
Jerry Yeomans

GOLF PRO UPDATE
We would like to Congratulate our 2025 Ladies Club Champion Lynn Dufour for capturing her 3rd straight Club Championship Title on Sunday February 22nd. We would also like to congratulate Sue Byther for winning the net division. The ladies enjoyed a beautiful weekend for golf and gathered in the Vue 18 following play for drinks and appetizers while we celebrated our Champions.
The Men’s Club Championship is quickly approaching and will be played Saturday and Sunday March 8th and 9th, registration is open until March 5th and round 1 tee times will be released on March 6th. All Members are welcome to participate, including Associate Members.
On the lesson tee our Operation 36 Ladies Program is entering the final weeks of the season, the ladies are doing great, and many have advanced each week to the following level. The program consists of Wednesday night practices and Saturday play days where the ladies start from 25 yards from the hole and move back yardages once they shoot 36 for 9 holes from that yardage. This year’s group is a combination of brand-new beginners, along with more advanced players, great playing ladies!
