Anita was born and raised in Tomkins Cove, Rockland County. She is a former beautician and was a food service coordinator for the North Rockland Central School District. She has 3 children and 3 grandchildren. She has been volunteering with different organizations for over 45 years, teaching Sunday School and Bible School; volunteering for the Stony Point Ambulance Corps and The Girl Scouts of America. She became involved with the Stony Point Senior Citizens Club II ten years ago, and served as president of the club for two terms. She organizes, collects and delivers gifts to the veterans at Castle Point VA Hospital. Anita started Buzy Bees, a group who knits lap robes and walker caddies for the veterans and for people in the hospital.

Trudy Album, a Holocaust survivor, came to New York in 1946 and has resided in Rockland County since 1973. She has 3 children and 7 grandchildren. She is a real estate broker since 1978 and currently works with Weichert Realty. In 1974, she began volunteering in Rockland and helped Shelley Berger establish and Meals on Wheels in Rockland and helped deliver meals. She volunteers with many organizations, including The National Council for Jewish Women, Rockland Holocaust Center and Museum, Rockland Jewish Family Services, Rhoda Bloom Kosher Food Pantry and makes friendly visits to homebound residents. Trudy wrote a book about her life Trudy Album, My Life Story. Her newest project, The Daffodil Project, she hopes to involve local organizations to plant daffodils in memory of all the children who were killed during the Holocaust, including her 2 sisters.

Exercise Myths about the aging senior and baby boomer

Many people assume that they're too out-of-shape, or sick, or tired, or just plain old to exercise. THEY'RE WRONG. Here are some common myths that stop older people from exercising.

EXERCISE MYTHS:

u Trying to exercise and get healthy is pointless - decline in old

age is inevitable. A lot of the symptoms that we associate with old age - such as weakness and loss of balance - are symptoms of inactivity, not age. Exercise improves more than your physical health. It can also boost memory and help prevent dementia. And it can help you maintain your independence and your way of life. If you stay strong and agile as you age, you'll be more able to keep doing the things you enjoy and less likely to need help.

Exercise isn't safe for someone my age - I don't want to fall and break a hip. Studies show that exercise can reduce your chances of a fall. Exercise builds strength, balance, and agility. Worried about osteoporosis and weak bones? One of the best ways to strengthen them is with regular exercise.

u I'm sick, so I shouldn't exercise. If you have a chronic health problem - such as arthritis, diabetes, or heart disease - exercise is almost certainly a good idea. Check with a doctor first, but exercise will probably help. For many people, exercise can do as much if not more good than the 5 to 10 medications they take every day."

u I never really exercised before - it's too late to make a difference in my health. Studies have found that even in people in their nineties living in research shows that starting exercise late in life can still cut the risk of health problems - such as diabetes - and improve symptoms.

u Exercise will hurt my joints. Studies show that exercising helps with arthritis pain. One study of people over age 60 with knee arthritis found that those who exercised more had less pain and better joint function.

u I'm too weak to start exercising. Maybe you just recovered from

an illness or surgery and are feeling too weak even to walk around the block. Maybe you only get out of the chair each day to go to the bathroom. If so, start there. Decide today to get in and out of your chair 10 times. As you do it more, your strength will improve.

Rockland Pharmacies Must Take Back Unused Prescription Medication Rockland County Executive Ed Day recently signed into law a bill that requires pharmacies to take back unused prescription medication. "We want to make it as easy as possible for Rockland residents to get rid of unused prescription medication in a safe and responsible way," the County Executive said. "This law will help them do that." He signed the bill at the Lexington Recovery Center, a mental health treatment organization that helps people with drug and alcohol addictions – including addiction to opioids. "There is an epidemic of opioid abuse in this county, in this state, in this nation," the County Executive said. "We don't think it will happen in our family. We never think that those pills that the doctor prescribed for a mom or dad following surgery a couple years ago are could be misused." Many mental health professionals spoke in favor of the legislation.

"This law will save lives," said Adrienne Marcus, executive director of Lexington, who appeared with the County Executive as he signed the legislation.

Annual County Health Rankings report released March 29

Rockland County Executive Ed Day and County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert are proud to announce that Rockland County is ranked second in New York State for overall health in 2017 in the annual County Health Rankings, up from third place last year.

Overall health of a county is measured by two types of health outcomes: how long people live (length of life) and how healthy people feel while alive (quality of life).

“I’m proud of the hard work done by our staff, working together with our communities, to improve the quality of health of our residents," said County Executive Day. "The County Health Rankings is an important source

of information our Health Department shares with local partners. We use this data to develop strategies that continue a culture of health and wellness that benefits all residents. I extend my congratulations on another year of extremely positive outcomes!"

Rockland ranked sixth in New York State this year for health factors, up from eighth last year.

Health factors in the County Health Rankings represent what influences the health of a county. Four types of health factors are measured: health behaviors, clinical care, social and economic factors, and physical environment.

The report looks at more than 30 factors that affect health such as education, employment, housing, tobacco use, and access to health care, and compares counties in each state.

"Rockland County has ranked one of the top five counties in New York State for overall

health since 2011, a tribute to all the wonderful work done by our Health Department staff, as well as to our successful partnerships with community and faith organizations, health care providers, schools, worksites, and municipalities. We still have much work to do, however this report shows that we are taking important steps towards achieving our goal of keeping all Rockland County residents healthy and safe," said Dr. Ruppert.

The rankings are issued by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.

Black Bean Brownies

Ingredients: One 20 ounce Box of Brownie Mix - Ghirardelli is the brand I use One 15 ounce Can of Black Beans Directions

1. Preheat oven to the temperature stated on the brownie mix.

2. Drain and rinse beans.

3. Place the rinsed beans back in the can and fill up with water or cold coffee adds a nice mocha flavor.

4. Empty the beans and water into a food processor and puree.

5. Mix together the beans and the brownie mix.

6. Prepare the pan as stated per directions on the brownie mix.

7. Pour mixed batter into the prepared pan - this batter can be thick.

Be sure to spread the batter evenly in the pan.

8. Bake as the instructions on the brownie box recommend. Depending on your oven, the brownies may need a few extra minutes to bake.

9. Allow to cool before you cut them.

This healthier version of brownies provides rich color and flavor that complements the chocolate perfectly! Let's not forget to mention that beans add fiber, potassium and protein to this favorite American dessert!
